    JJ Whitefield & Igor Zhukovsky

Two Tales For The Mind Vol. 2

After a first volume featuring Janko Nilovic & The Soul Surfers, Broc Recordz is back with a new banger. This time, we've got none other than the legendary JJ Whitefield (known for The Poets of Rhythm, Karl Hector, Embryo, W.I.T.C.H...) and the incomparable Igor Zhukovsky from The Soul Surfers.

Side A's "One Hand Clap" is pure funkadelic ecstasy! Smothered in wah-wah, fuzz and powered by a loud vintage drum kit; the production is thick and creamy, like those classic library breaks records - with just the right amount of tape saturation gluing the whole thing together.

Side B's "Munich Bells" is a similiarly crafted, library-psych-breaks beast. Guided by picked bassline, untreated drums bash away in the foreground while psychedelic guitar noodles drizzled in reverb slowly drift in and out of focus.

Mojuba sublabel Frekoba welcomes JJ, whose unique approach to a truly playful and colorful selection of club tracks has got us all modestly excited about this so-far unknown star.

Imagine a night at a club like Panorama Bar where Soundstream, Lil Silva & Errorsmith are having a blast. Now you are in the right zone to have fun with JJ's debut 12". House, disco, UK funky and off-kilter cut-up grooves for your enjoyment, with sumptuous textures, wonky sound design and warm drums - perfect material to get absorbed in. A really nice and understated EP which shows off the producer's skills wonderfully. Recommended.

‘Unplugged Vol. 1’ is the first release in a new CD series by Ssaliva. This inaugural release contains 11 synthetic vignettes, a very stripped back affair, much more then we are used of this ever so elegant master of layering and kingpin of the lighter kind of electronic lasagna, digesting the latest flavors long before they get stale. Not on this one though. These are more skeletons of pop songs, bare and glassy, played on a fake nylon-stringed koto for an imaginary court of internet angels.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Ssaliva leads us through skeletal synth compositions here, capturing the bedroom misanthropy of C86 but in an entirely different style. Flavours range from the beautiful and pastoral "Ever Since" and "Fall W Me" to the queasy "Backfire".

This single (single no. 4) features two new songs from the Gothenburg duo.

“Even when smoked out or slowed down, [the band] still teems with energy and both Kastlander and Benon, chameleons that they are, blend into snippets of song just as well as they shift gears between genres” - Pitchfork

    JJ No 2

In Summer of 2009, Gothenburg, Sweden’s jj quietly released one of the year's most critically acclaimed albums. This album, "JJ Nº 2", was the group’s debut full-length ("JJ Nº 1" was their first single).

jj create pop, R&B and Balearic dub from the ghosts of lost lovers. Their music is both carefree without carelessness, and self-aware without being self-conscious. With it, they build an ice bridge arching from Gothenburg into the heart of the UK music world, and everywhere in between.

'A gorgeous ode to chemically-assisted euphoria, or an effective, shimmering simulation for those who keep their intoxications on the legal side' - Pitchfork.
