The Stone Roses

Sally Cinnamon

This single was first released in 1987 and captures The Roses in their second phase - youthful pure pop influenced by early Creation and in particular Primal Scream and the Jesus And Mary Chain (but without the feedback!) It's one of their prettiest ever tunes and features a lyric untypical of any other song they did in that it tells a cute little story with a twist at the end. It's three minutes of perfection, basically! For years, the so-called single mix of Sally has been the only available version. This is infact what sounds to me like a demo. On this release we have the correct original single (erroneously titled12 inch version0 which has a far lusher sound and the beautiful heavilly percussive outro. You need this proper version. Of the b-sides: "Here It Comes" is a 60s beauty power-pop gem that stayed in their live set well into 1989, whilst Ian Brown once described "All Across The Sands" as his favourite ever Roses song. Now that's saying something!

For this special release we have previously unreleased live versions of the 3 original songs, with Here It Comes featuring twice. All in all, a welcome release of a single which should basically never be allowed to go out of print. It's a classic.

Surely this album needs no introduction or explanation?! But just in case you don’t know, this is arguably one of the best debut albums of all time, from one of the most influential bands of their generation! And if that’s not enough to tempt you, then I don’t know what is.

Andy says: The Stone Roses' debut album from 1989 is that rare thing: a perfect record. The quality of these songs is actually hard to comprehend; absolute classics, every single one! Uprooting the established guitar pop format in favour of a loose-limbed groove the baggy icons somehow incorporated Byrdsian jangle, hippie-inclusivity, funk swagger and searing solos into a new type of rock music, single-handedly soundtracking the second Summer of Love and defining a moment in time. It ignited and united a whole generation and will be passed on forever. Beautiful.

When released in 1992, Turns Into Stone functioned as a sop to Stone Roses fans expecting another smash album like their eponymous debut album from 1989. Silvertone Records released Turns Into Stone as a comprehensive collection of early Stone Roses material, hits and B-sides of exceptional quality. Includes their biggest hit "Fools Gold"!

The Second Coming - Back To Black Vinyl Edition

The title is a joking reference to the messianic anticipation that built up in the years between the Manchester, England rock band's 1989 debut - which Britain's New Musical Express magazine ranked as the greatest album of the 80s - and this 1995 follow-up. It's also a description of the Stone Roses' sound, a sort of second coming of 60s and 70s blues-rock, re-born with a funk beat. Back in '89 it sounded like a revolution, and it was: crossing Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan with club music, it helped set the template for all British alternative rock to follow, from Blur to the revamped U2.

"Second Coming" consolidates that sound with a see-sawing mix of hard-rock driving songs, with chunky electric guitar riffs and big beats, and acoustic anthems that immediately sound like they've been on the radio for a dozen years or more. The latter group includes "Ten Storey Love Song", a devotional ballad with a Dylan-esque melody, and "Your Star Will Shine", a psychedelic folk ditty that would have fit on an early Bee Gees album. "Good Times" is one of the big-beat numbers, and although it starts out sounding like a very blue Eric Burdon, it builds into a classic shouted-out blues-rock chorus, the kind on which FM radio thrived in the 1970s. "Tears" follows a Zeppelin-esque arc from acoustic to electric folk. Which, no doubt, is the exact route a lot of hard-rock devotees think any second coming should follow.

The Stone Roses - 20th Anniversary Special Edition

Originally released in May 1989, "The Stone Roses" is often cited as THE greatest album of all time. Twenty years on and original producer John Leckie has returned to the studio for the first time (it's never been remastered before) with Ian Brown, to produce this anniversary version of the record. The result is a warmer, brighter sound, and it's finally loud enough too! It seems unnecessary to add what a brilliant album this so obviously is: every tune's a winner!

              The Complete Stone Roses

"The Complete Stone Roses concentrates on the band's first album, compiling the A- and B-sides of the group's hits from "Elephant Stone" to "One Love." In addition to the familiar material, the disc includes rare, early singles like "So Young" and "Sally Cinnamon" for the first time on compact disc, giving their classic material some context. There's a fair amount of classic pop here, and the rarities are necessary for dedicated fans." - Allmusic.
