Are Taylor Swift’s lyrics works of literature? Clio Doyle has spent her career exploring that question. An award-winning academic and creator of the UK’s first university module on Taylor Swift and English Literature, she is also – unashamedly – a lifelong Swiftie. In From the Vault, she makes the passionate case that examining Swift’s lyrics through the lens of high art illuminates the complexity, ingenuity, and sheer pleasure of her songs.

This book is an attempt to get to the beating heart of Swift’s writing: what it means to study her work, and what it means to love it. Can you separate Swift from her writing?Does it have a place in the canon alongside The Great Gatsby and The Waste Land? Why does it mean so much to people? What if it sometimes makes you feel bad?And ultimately: is it art? From the Vault is a joyful, nuanced and sharply intelligent exploration of obsessive fandom, the creative work of songwriting, and the value we give to different kinds of art.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Taylor's back! Loads of pop hooks, masterfully written melodies and Tay's unmistakable vocals make for an album we could all accurately describe as Taylor Swift's most recent album.

So, the original 'Tortured Poets Department' was a brand new full-length album, that was released the day before Record Store Day this year. It's good, lots of those trademark Swift choruses and huge, cathartic synth lines that back up her powerful anthemic vocals. Everyone was very happy, BUT then two hours later there was ANOTHER part of the album released digitally! It too is really good, if anything for my money it's even better than the original (sorry Taylor). All 31 songs of it are presented here, alongside four lovely acoustic numbers. The acoustic version of 'Fortnight' feat Post Malone. is particularly brilliant. All pressed on clear vinyl. Lovely.

The Tortured Poets Department is the eleventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, released on 19th April 2024. Swift announced the album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024, after winning Best Pop Vocal Album for her tenth studio album, 'Midnights' (2022).

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: There's no doubt there's been a big reassessment of Taylor's sound since the superb duo of Folklore and Evermore (and the brilliant Long Pond sessions LP from RSD last year), and mass appreciation for Midnights so it's with some excitement that her new LP 'The Tortured Poet's Department' lands. I for one am excited to hear it.

‘When I think back on the fearless album and all that you turned it into, a completely involuntary smile creeps across my face. This was the musical era in which so many inside jokes were created between us, so many hugs exchanged and hands touched, so many unbreakable bonds formed, so before I say anything else, let me just say that is was a real honor to get to be a teenager alongside you. And for those of you I’ve come to know more recently than 2008, I am ecstatic that I’ll get to experience a bit of that feeling with you in the very near future. Now that I can fully appreciate it in its whimsical, effervescent, chaotic entirety.

Recorded and released as Taylor Swift assumes control of her own discography, in the artists own words: ‘only I know which songs I wrote that almost made the fearless album. Songs I absolutely adore, but were held back for different reasons (don’t want too many breakup songs, don’t want too many down tempo songs, can’t fit that many songs on a physical cd).‘

So expect an almost purer distillation of the multi-award winning, platinum selling album. With lots, LOTS more to get stuck into, (‘the entire vivid picture, the entire dreamscape’), there’s six never before released song on her version of this album.

Apparently Taylor’s going to re-record all of her music that’s previously been published. Opening it up as more intimate, person, and heartfelt.
