    Super Furry Animals

    Phantom Power - 2023 Reissue

Super Furry Animals were one of the first post-alternative bands, fusing together a number of disparate musical genres - including power pop, punk rock, techno, and progressive rock - creating a shimmering, melodic, irreverent, and wilfully artsy rock & roll.

Produced by the band, ‘Phantom Power’, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2023, keeps a much lower profile than the band’s previous work. The album, for the most part, is awash with pedal steel, acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies. But if you think the creative juices have ceased, you could barely be more wrong.

Gruff Rhys' songwriting moves a step forward on ‘Phantom Power’, with playful story-based lyrics about turtles, mingers, ninjas and cabbages contrasting with lines about death, radiation and war.

This 2LP heavyweight black vinyl deluxe reissue, with original artwork and die-cut sleeve, has been carefully remastered from the mixdown tapes and includes liner notes from the album’s executive producer Kurt Stern.

If you need more Super Furries, the remastered album is also available as a 3CD format, with two CDs packed with loads of bonus material, including out-takes, demos, and live versions, much of it previously unreleased.

      Super Furry Animals

Rings Around The World, B-Sides (RSD22 EDITION)

THIS IS A RECORD STORE DAY 2022 EXCLUSIVE, LIMITED TO ONE PER PERSON.

New, limited edition, yellow vinyl 1LP. Cut from master audio files. Original single 'B-Sides' from the 3CD version of the recently remastered / re-issued classic hit album, 'Rings Around The World', Super Furries' most successful, celebrating its 20th anniversary

        Super Furry Animals

Rings Around The World (20th Anniversary Edition)

The fifth studio album from Welsh quintet Super Furry Animals was their most commercially successful to date. A musically eclectic record, incorporating pop, prog, punk, jungle, electronica, techno and death metal, the album was shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize in 2001 and named as Mojo’s best album in the same year.

The Super Furries had a knack of taking bits of 60s classics, modern electronics, and everything inbetween and melding them into flawless, if slightly off kilter, pop gems and here they did it to perfection.

Super Furry Animals release a compilation of their radio sessions for the BBC available as an 180g vinyl box set and double cd (featuring Mark James Yeti artwork throughout plus 2 new illustrations by Pete Fowler) via Strangetown. This includes the eight sessions recorded for the BBC including those for John Peel and Mark Radcliffe.

This follows the vinyl, cd and digital remastered re-issues of their top twenty albums, Mwng (2015 Domino Recordings), Fuzzy Logic (2016, BMG) and Radiator (2017, BMG).

In a press release the band had this to say about Super Furry Animals at the BBC: "The five, excitable kids of the Super Furry Animals saw many wonders of the modern world through our innocent eyes, but finding ourselves playing songs in John Peel's home, or in the carpeted muffle of Maida Vale, elevated the experience to new levels. Our thanks go to those rescuing the recordings from our dusty lofts, Kliph Scurlock and Donal Whelan, and the surgical attention to detail by the great artistic minds of Mark James and Pete Fowler. Also, long live public broadcasting."

              STAFF COMMENTS

Laura says: "Fuzzy Logic" was originally released in 1996, and introduced us to the warped, synth-psych-pop world of the Super Furries. You're plunged straight in from the opening riffs of "God! Show Me Magic", which sets things off at a manic pace, before swooping down into "Fuzzy Birds", then back up again for the hook-filled "Something 4 The Weekend". And so it goes on, vying between manic knob twiddling wig-outs to more pastoral, psych-pop all with an innate sense of melody and fun. They managed to take elements of 60s psych, 70s glam and a punk rock attitude and meld them into something unlike anything else around at the time. It was a real breath of fresh air when it came out in '96 and still sounds great 20 years on!

The Welsh psychedelic pop legends return with "Dark Days/Light Years", their ninth studio album, a glorious technicolour journey into the mind of Super Furry Animals, jam packed into 59 minutes of acidic pop genius. Where previous albums have seen the band experiment with extra instrumentation, this release is full of songs based on grooves rather than ensemble composition. The band's impish sense of humour remains, though, with track titles such as "The Very Best Of Neil Diamond" and "Moped Eyes" standing out. Also notable is Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy's guest appearance on the Kraftwerk-inspired "Inaugural Trams", performing a German-language rap. In keeping with more recent albums, the band also share lead vocal duties between several members.

              Super Furry Animals

              Hey Venus

Not as overtly ambitious as their recent work, SFA's unabashed return to simple power pop sees the group create their most coherent record since "Radiator". Eleven effortlessly crafted songs that hold together as an addictive pop album, "Hey Venus!" is by turns typically frenzied and blissfully relaxed. Combining the lush spacey arrangements and sun-kissed vocal harmonies characteristic of Spector, Wilson and Bacharach with more than a little glam rocker 'tude, Gruff and the boys have both rewarded long-term fans and delightfully converted those who had long since dismissed their wizardry (even in this very shop!) Despite its greater discipline, "Hey Venus!" sees them both continuing to progress whilst joyfully confounding expectations. Indeed, by embracing such disparate influences as soft-psych, lackadaisical soul and bubblegum pop, the Furries have once again proved their vitality and necessity to the pop music sphere.
