Coming Up - 30th Anniversary Edition

Originally released in September 1996, ‘Coming Up’ represented the creative and commercial peak for a rejuvenated Suede… some debut indeed for new band members guitarist Richard Oakes and keyboardist Neil Codling. A UK No. 1 album which spent just shy of an entire year in the album chart, the vivid, electrifying ‘Coming Up’ spawned five UK Top 10 singles – ‘Trash’, ‘Beautiful Ones’, ‘Saturday Night’, ‘Lazy’ and ‘Filmstar’. Elsewhere, grimy glam stompers meet elegiac ballads and stadium anthems. 30 years on, ‘Coming Up’ still packs all of its original punch.

Rodge Glass

As One: Remaking Suede

The official, intimate and candid biography charting the second act of Suede during their remarkable second act. This year will mark thirty-three years since Suede released their debut eponymous album and sixteen since their glorious and unexpected comeback in 2010. Their two most recent albums - Autofiction in 2022 and Antidepressants in 2025 - both reached number two in the UK charts.

Based on exclusive and extensive interviews with the band, their family and friends, As One is an intimate and candid biography of one of the UK’s biggest band’s during the unlikely second act of a career that spans four decades. It is a book that studies the band from close up and afar, written by award-winning author Rodge Glass, who has been granted unprecedented access to the members at home, on stage, backstage, in the studio, rehearsing and promoting over the past three years. It is an honest, long-term interrogation of what it is really like to be in Suede.

The book asks difficult questions about how great bands survive and thrive over time, many years after their first flush of success. How do you build back up from nothing? How do you reconnect with your audience, while avoiding simply rehashing old ideas? How do relationships in a band change with time? How do you remake Suede?

Suede

Trash - 30th Anniversary Edition

Originally released in August 1996, ‘Trash’ was the first missive from a reenergised Suede, the first, in fact, of five Top Ten hits that would come from the new album. With new members Richard Oakes on guitar and Neil Codling on keyboards, ‘Trash’ was an instant hit, roaring onto radio A-lists and rising to No. 3 in the UK singles chart. 30 years on, still fizzing with excitement and swagger, it’s rightly remembered as one of the defining anthems of the 90s.

As was customary for Suede fans, there were treats in store too on the single’s incredible extra tracks – ‘Europe Is Our Playground’, ‘Another No One’, ‘Every Monday Morning Comes’… among the band’s fiercely loyal fans all of ‘Trash’’s “other sides” came to be seen as important as the ’A’!

Where all of Suede’s previous singles had been issued as 12” singles, ‘Trash’ was the first to pass over the format in favour of two separate CD singles, both featuring unique B-sides. For the single’s 30th anniversary this release pulls together both of those original CD1 / CD2 packages into one strictly limited 45 r.p.m. 12” E.P. on lilac vinyl.

For this unique release, ‘Coming Up’ graphic designer Howard Wakefield has come on board 30 years on to restore Nick Knight and Peter Saville’s iconic photography and artwork and reconfigure the visuals for full 12” glory.

Demon Records are thrilled to present a black-vinyl repress of ‘Sci-Fi Lullabies: Volume 2’, a sequel to the classic 1997 B-Sides compilation by Suede.

The landmark 1996 album reconstructed from BBC sessions and live recordings! Suede’s commercial high watermark came in 1996 with ‘Coming Up’. The 1995 addition to the line-up of lead guitarist Richard Oakes and keyboard player Neil Codling had given the band a new impetus and focus. At the very pinnacle of ‘Britpop’ – a scene they’d helped inspire but fiercely operated outside of – roared back with an adrenalin rush of new Suede classics.

The first missive from ‘Coming Up’ was the trailblazing ‘Trash’, which reached No. 3 in the UK chart – a joint career-best for the band. That was followed into the Top 10 over the next twelve months by four more hit singles from the album - ‘Beautiful Ones’, ‘Lazy’, ‘Saturday Night’, and ‘Filmstar’.

During ‘Coming Up’s' album and singles lifespan of more than a year the band toured almost constantly – taking in the USA, Japan, Europe and right across the UK. The culmination of a year’s precision-tooling of the material in the live arena came 22nd August 1997 and a triumphant headlining slot at Reading Festival.

Collected here are selected recordings from the Reading gig, broadcast on BBC Radio 1, plus some previously unreleased studio takes of the album’s tracks recorded for the station’s Evening Session and Mark Radcliffe shows. Cherrypicked by the band as the best possible ‘Coming Up’ BBC recordings, they’ve been sequenced for ‘Coming Up At The BBC’ in the same order as the original studio album.

Note: Because no contemporary or BBC versions of the album’s penultimate song, ‘The Chemistry Between Us’ exists, Suede have kindly donated a previously unreleased 1999 live version recorded by the same line up at that year’s Roskilde Festival.

Suede

Antidepressants

Suede have announced details of their 10th studio album ‘Antidepressants’. Due for release on 5th September via BMG, the album is a milestone achievement that sees the band at the top of their game. It follows the success of their critically-acclaimed ninth top 10 album ‘Autofiction’ released in September 2022, which charted at No.2 on the UK Albums Chart and was their highest-charting release in over 20 years.

Suede will celebrate the release of ‘Antidepressants’ with a takeover of London’s Southbank Centre, through a series of exciting live performances kicking off in September, Suede’s four-night residency will commence with two consecutive nights at the Royal Festival Hall on September 13th and 14th, followed on September 17th by an intimate stripped-back performance at the Purcell Room, culminating in a collaboration with the Paraorchestra on September 19th at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Suede were there before Oasis, hammering away at the Britpop bell, but they've not stayed there, they've chameleonically and expertly shifted through various states of indie-adjacent heaviness and landed on 'Antidepressants', a roaring garagey slab of snarling post-britpop heft. Lovely.

Suede

Dog Man Star - 30th Anniversary Edition

“Suede's second album is still truly extraordinary – who would dare make it today?” Alexis Petridis (The Guardian).

Suede’s era-defining second album from 1994 celebrates its 30th anniversary this year with this brand-new, very limited UK Dinked retail exclusive on 2LP yellow gatefold packaging with an exclusive 7” single. The package is limited to 1200 copies and the 2-sided bonus 7” includes ’The Living Dead (Piano Version)’ and ‘La Puissance (The Power)’ on vinyl for the first time.

‘Dog Man Star’ is seen by many as Suede’s most musically adventurous album – sweeping strings sit next to orchestral ballads, epic widescreen pieces, indie anthems and trashy glam rock. It was the last album to feature the band’s guitarist and co-songwriter Bernard Butler. It includes the classic hit singles ‘We Are The Pigs’, ‘The Wild Ones’, and ‘New Generation’. Art and design for this new format has been undertaken for Suede by official designer and photographer Paul Khera and includes new sleeve notes by Cure / Manic Street Preachers biographer Simon Price.

Also available for the 30th anniversary are 2LP black vinyl halfspeed master, and a 3CD in Deluxe 7” packaging containing the original album, B-sides, bonus tracks from the ‘Dog Man Star’ era and booklet.

Suede

Suede - 30th Anniversary Edition

Released in March 1993, Suede’s self-titled debut was a critical and commercial triumph, winning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize and hitting the #1 spot on the UK Album Chart. Featuring the classic singles ‘The Drowners’, ‘Animal Nitrate’, ‘So Young’, and ‘Metal Mickey’, ‘Suede’ sold 100,000 copies in its first week, making it the fastest-selling debut album ever in the UK at the time.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this landmark album, Edsel is proud to present this newly-mastered edition of the album. “It was a genuinely magical time in my life and one for which I’ll always be grateful It felt incredible being in what I thought was quite probably the most exciting band in the world at the time, making a record which felt like more than just another band making another album.” – Brett Anderson

“30 years ago, this is where it all began A mixture of the live songs that had won us a following and our first experiments in the studio Listening back now it still has that sense of wildness, and drama, and possibility of those early days So young and so gone, indeed!” – Mat Osman The album has been newly mastered by Phil Kinrade at AIR from the original ½” tapes and production masters, overseen and approved by producer Ed Buller. The nine B-sides are now included on a second CD, along with a cover of ‘Brass in Pocket’, recorded for an NME covermount cassette. Suede

Beautiful Ones - Music Box

'Beautiful Ones' is the second single from Suede's seminal 1996 album ‘Coming Up’. Released through Nude Records, the song was a top-ten hit in the UK & quickly became a staple of the band’s live set - capturing the atmosphere of the era. “I wanted the song to be a celebration of the madness of mine and my friends lives” frontman Brett Anderson told the NME, “it’s probably the song that we’ve had sung back to us the most… one of those songs that’s really taken on a life of its own, because it just connects with people - they feel it’s about them, and it is.” Our version of this anthemic classic is guaranteed to make Your Bits Shake to the Hits, so why not…

Suede

Autofiction

Suede return with their ninth studio album Autofiction, set for release via BMG.

As Suede began work on the songs that would become Autofiction, they decided to go back to basics. In a move that recalled their most formative days, Brett Anderson, Mat Osman, Simon Gilbert, Richard Oakes and Neil Codling schlepped to a rehearsal studio in deserted Kings Cross to collect a key, hump their own gear, set up and start playing.

Speaking about Autofiction, Brett Anderson said: "Autofiction is our punk record. No whistles and bells. Just the five of us in a room with all the glitches and fuck-ups revealed; the band themselves exposed in all their primal mess."

First single ‘She Still Leads Me On’ is the track that reconfigured what the album could be. A beautiful song written from Brett to his late mother. As its title suggests, Autofiction is one of Anderson’s most personal records yet. Reflecting on the process of writing acclaimed works of memoir Coal Black Mornings and Afternoons With The Blinds Drawn helped Brett get a newfound perspective on himself as a performer and singer in the public eye, much of which has bled into the lyricism of Autofiction.

Jane Savidge

Here They Come With Their Make-Up On : Suede, Coming Up . . . And More Adventures Beyond The Wild Frontiers

There were only a handful of people in the world who still really believed in Suede at the time, and five of them were in the band. Brett Anderson, Suede. Suede were Marmite at the time, and I was expecting the press to trash them.

Every meeting I had with the record company, I was told they were done for. Ed Buller, Coming Up producer. How did they do that? Comeback of the century.

Select magazine cover, November 1996. Here They Come with Their Make-Up On examines in exquisite detail how Suede emerged from the chaotic, ruined remnants of their career and somehow managed to conjure up their most joyously evocative and celebrated album to date. Coming Up the extraordinary record in question stumped the band s most ardent critics and hit the jackpot, with sales that eclipsed those of their first two releases combined.

As the band s publicist throughout that period, Jane is uniquely placed to reveal exactly how they did it. This book is also a personal journey into the heart of an album that Jane loves if not unconditionally then as a piece of work that has ultimately survived the ravages of time and the brutish, nasty, and not-so-short nature of the media scrutiny that had threatened to confine the band to the dustbin of history. In addition, it features yet more outlandish tales from Jane s time with Suede and those around them back then, as well as new interviews with band members Brett Anderson, Richard Oakes, and Neil Codling, and Coming Up s producer, Ed Buller.
