PALMS

New Robohands LP 'Palms' is the fifth album from the London based instrumentalist and producer Andy Baxter. Moving towards different genres and arrangements from his previous albums, 'Palms' features duelling harp parts, tape echo, double bass and draws inspiration from artists such as Dorothy Ashby, Azimuth, Alice Coltrane and Toquinho.

In parts tropical and synth drenched, and in others stripped back and acoustic, 'Palms' is a journey back to saturated analog recordings of the late 60s and 70s, with a subtle modern layer of glitch FX and pitch control experimentation in places. The album makes also reference to classic releases from jazz fusion that feature the legendary Arp Odyssey synthesiser, used by artists such as Herbie Hancock and George Duke.

The seventeen track album features performances from multiple session musicians including Jim Piela on saxophone and Marco Cremaschini on Rhodes, with Baxter taking on drums, guitar, bass, keys and also mixing duties. 'Palms' is a new direction for his project and a record that thematically journeys into modern reinterpretations of jazz, downtempo, acoustic and ambient music.

A Vision Of Parorama

Piano Sunset / Lost In Palms

A new 7" double header from Balearic-boogie mainstay, A Vision Of Panorama. A truly diverse artist, whose work graces a number of different labels; his work for Star Creature has always been the perfect marriage of mellow, summery synth work and rugged boogie beats.

"Piano Sunset" epitomizes this ethos beautifully, with vintage drum boxes firing off some familiar rhythms whilst an array of wooden electric bass, sparkly keys and meandering piano notes create a dazzling vista of late afternoon enjoyment. A clean, digital signal path with nods to FM synthesis give this track high definition contours and a bright shine.

"Lost In Palms" sees the producer deliver a nicely swung, late night house jam. Build around a splendid house beat comprised of galloping congas, twatting hi-hats and classic 909 snares with plenty of shuffle; organ stabs and sparkling keyboard licks accompany a wobbly synthline and deep bass notes. Imagine if Kerri Chandler had grown up on the Italian Riviera and you're halfway there...

Top stuff as always from Star Creature and AVOP.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Star Creature heat from AVOP. "Piano Sunset" rocks that Zanzibar proto-house vibe brilliantly and is a must for fans of Mark Seven's Parkway series. On the flip, a swung late night house jam that has Kerri Chandler's DNA coursing through its veins.

Jazz N Palms is a jazz-funk project from Italian DJ and producer Riccio. Last summer, he released his first double album "Ses Rodes", inspired by his life in this country location, to the north of Ibiza.

The soft and warm grooves which usually distinguish Jazz N Palms releases, are augmented by a more upbeat, scattering groove with psychedelic guitar on this 7 inch vinyl release on Terrasolare.

'Tormenta Tropical' (Tropical Storm) reflects Riccio's deep connection with the natural elements of his location - those moments when the cold winds and dark clouds, combine with the hot water from the sea, creating the tropical storm.

    Gooch Palms

    Novo's

NOVO: A word used to describe the actions, attitudes, beliefs, and dispositions (among other things) of a lazy, apathetic, and above all, worthless individual from Newcastle, Australia. Move over Savage Garden, Australia’s got a new favourite duo, The Gooch Palms! And they’ve just released their debut album, NOVO’S. Aptly set against news footage of The Star Hotel riots, in Newcastle in 1979, from which Leroy MacQueen & Kat Friend emerged.

Novo’s rare capture of Friends’ sweet nasally vocal, sidles with The Gooch Palms’ scuzzy garage sound and lucid surf-style guitar tones effortlessly. NOVO’S was recorded over a short day at the "Gooch Farm", before sending it across the Pacific, to be mixed and mastered by NOBUNNY guitarist, Jason Testasecca (AKA Elvis Christ) in Oakland, CA. It's charming, it's slacker-punk, and we've got a feeling you'll fucken love it.

Hell Yeah is proud to present the return of Jazz N Palms with a superb new project following the success of his Ses Rodes album. 'Milano' as a 7" with radio and instrumental versions alongside an original video and expressive artwork by Parisian studio Nokko.

Jazz N Palms is a jazz-inspired project from Italian DJ and producer Riccio. He started this project after moving to Ibiza and falling under the spell of its ancestral side, its sweet and slow pace of life and the natural rhythms of the beauty in the north of the island. In summer, he served up his fantastic Ses Rodes double album which was dedicated to the original way of life that had remained almost unchanged till the early 80s party explosion.

This new track came about after Riccio heard Piera Martell's 1978 soul-jazz track 'Exotica' in a mix by Phil Mison. The idea was reimagine the song with new lyrics and set in Milan, in the early days when the town was invaded by unusual and exotic palm trees in Piazza Duomo. The song tells the story of a country teenager who is unsure about heading to a big new city after receiving an invitation. The story will retrieve familiar emotions for many of us who have faced similarly important decisions in our life, but this time married to an escapist groove.

For this release, the original 'Exotica' has been fully replayed by contemporary musicians from the multi-genre Italian ensemble 291out, with whom Riccio has worked in the past. It has new lyrics sung in Italian by fellow 291out collaborator Giovanna Lubjan after permission was given by original composer Salvo Ingrassia.

'Milano' is a luxurious soul-jazz fusion. It has exotic guitar lines and gently persuasive rhythms topped by the soaring vocal from Lubjan. A steamy sax helps the temperature rise as the track unfolds and traps you under its gorgeous spell.

This is a timeless package of blissed-out brilliance from Jazz N Palms.

      Wild Palms

      Live Together, Eat Each Other

Recorded by Wild Palms in the same self-built Manor House studio where they made their 2011 debut ‘Until Spring’, new album ‘Live Together, Eat Each Other’ is a lusciously layered offering of hazy experimentalism and off-kilter alt pop, that follows in the auspicious lineage of Beach House, Cocteau Twins and TV On The Radio.

Half a decade in the works, ‘Live Together, Eat Each Other’ packs a lifetime’s worth of experience into 13 tracks, alongside a painstaking approach to recording that beams out of its shimmering glitches and collaged soundscapes. “Because we redid the songs so many times, and sat with them so long and went through so many transformations in terms of layering, it was kind of like the songs had eaten themselves and been regurgitated as something else,” explains Lou of the album’s title. “It seemed like the whole thing was this weird process of consumption and reconstitution. The time it took seemed to allow for a kind of gestation, or fermentation, period. It gave time for influences to bond and stick to each other. Things were made, smashed up into fragments and reformed repeatedly until we couldn’t really remember what it’d been before and it was just what it was. Darrell [the band’s guitarist and Saatchi approved artist]’s artwork followed the same trail as well, collage, re-working, painting, and blotting.”

‘Live Together, Eat Each Other’ is released through One Little Indian Records. The album was produced by the band’s bassist Gareth Jones and Liam Howe (Lana Del Rey, FKA Twigs) who was drafted in to coproduce and fine tune the record.

      Surfer Blood

      1000 Palms

You may recall that Surfer Blood were quite the breakout band of 2009: in the midst of their own 10 gig marathon at New York’s CMJ Pitchfork took one look at their ‘Astro Coast’ debut on Kanine and praised its “lo-fl clangor, glo-fi harmonies, punchy retro-garage concision and never-out-of-style classic rock songcraft…the band appears to have arrived at its enormously likeable sound organically.” Touring with Pixies and playing every cool festival on the known planet only seemed to solidify Surfer Blood’s place in the hipster heartland.

With the band self-recording it was in the glamourous setting of an attic studio above a doctor’s office where drums were committed to tape. Of the work, frontman John Paul Pitts states “fortunately none of us are strangers to DIY recording, so this seemed like the kind of challenge well-suited to our band”.

Hairy Hands is a DIY beats/vocals project from singer/songwriter Mr James Bright. His cut-and-paste productions are playful and naive, drawing from influences such as Madlib, Arthur Russell and Benny Sings.

Sometimes, a musician has to suppress some of his or her particular tastes for the benefit of a project. In developing the sound of Mr James Bright, production is often taken care of by James' close friends at studios all across the globe. Over the years, however, James' urge to unleash his own monster sound had grown, and after a year in the making, his own sound is ready to be let out of the cage.

This is HAIRY HANDS. Fluid rhythms and lavish keys are strewn together to create a blend of beats and wonky folk that is particularly difficult to label. Tracks bounce between chorus and verse, dropping and twisting every few bars; this music is undeniably vibrant. A childlike approach to production, with everything and anything sprinkled from start to finish, causes the finished product to sound beautifully naive. There are no limits here, each track will get you in a headlock and re-arrange your perception of groove. Goodbye Mr.Music Snob, Hairy Hands has just turned your world upside down…

‘Wild Palms’ b/w ‘Symphony In White, No. 2’ is the first taste of new material from Sun Airway since the release of their acclaimed debut album, ‘Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier’.

Following tours with Bear in Heaven, Cults, Small Black, Lower Dens and more, the band went back into the studio and emerged with this stunning new single.

On this 7" the band's modern sounds glance backwards, with faint 80s pop melodies sneaking into the band's repertoire.

Although the sounds are lush, subtle and carefully crafted, Sun Airway once again proves the songwriting comes first, writing instantly classic pop tunes on their new single.

        Wild Palms
        Symphony In White, No. 2

Wild Palms release new single ‘Delight In Temptation’, hot on the heels of their long awaited debut album ‘Until Spring’.

Both single and album are produced by Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear / Depeche Mode / These New Puritans), and ‘Delight In Temptation’ is Wild Palm’s most anthemic, euphoric glo-fi moment yet.

According to singer Lou Hill, the song works from the hypothesis that “carnality is an inescapable part of our nature and (we should) embrace it as a pleasurable facet of our lives - celebrate it rather than view it as something of a sin”.
