HighSchool

Accelerator

Buzz-worthy post-punk outfit HighSchool continue their ascendant 2024 with the release of their highly-awaited second studio EP, Accelerator.

Collating singles ‘August 19’, ‘Doesn’t Matter’ and ‘She Took You to Narnia’, HighSchool’s second EP builds seamlessly on the sounds of their 2021 cult-classic debut Forever At Last.

Having spent the intervening years polishing their craft across Melbourne and their adopted home of London, Accelerator was produced by rising producer Finn Billingham, mixed by GRAMMY-winning engineer Philippe Weiss (Earl Sweatshirt, Nas, Drake) and mastered by Blur and Depeche Mode producer Ben Hillier.

The resulting five-track collection is suffused with emotionally charged and elliptical songwriting, conjuring the tangible aura of the band’s post-punk forebears as filtered through a lens of contemporary lo-fi bedroom pop.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Australia eh? They're bloody smashing it at the minute, and HighSchool's 'Accelerator' is the latest in the long line of post-punk adjacent indie-pop releases and it is a doozie. Jangling, deep and well balanced, happy to wade in the murky post-punk waters but with instrumental harmonies adding much needed levity.

    Portland

    Departures

Portland is a project born of instant connection, yet it’s also one that has survived some of the darkest life can throw at them. Dreamy songwriting bathed in beauty, the Belgian two-piece thrive on pure expression, infusing their beatific, ethereal work with incredible honesty. New album, ‘Departures’, pushes them to the brink, forcing them to open up as never before, and in the process discover themselves all over again.

The story starts almost a decade ago. Sarah Pepels was new in town, a music student attempting to make some roots. Hearing music coming from down the corridor in her student home, she knocked, and met Jente Pironet for the first time. One conversation led to the next, and within hours they were writing together, playing each other their ideas and sharing some profound secrets. “We shared the same passions,” she reflects. “We became best friends, soul mates… and the band emerged from that.”

The two won the prestigious De Nieuwe Lichting prize - one of Belgium’s top honours for young songwriters - before releasing their precocious debut album ‘Your Colours Will Stain’ in 2019. Word quickly spread on their hazy dream pop - reminiscent of Beach House or School Of Seven Bells - but the pandemic pulled the shutters down on their burgeoning careers. As Jente puts it: “We went through some difficult times, I guess. The pandemic was very isolating for us both, and as a result the music took on board those emotions.”

‘Departures’ was born of this. Put simply, it’s magnificent - all the promise of their earlier work realized, it drifts between the grace of Slowdive and a sense of classic songwriting that recalls everyone from Fleetwood Mac, say, to Angus and Julia Stone. Sonically beautifully and emotionally gripping, it’s a profound song cycle, the work of musicians digging deeper than ever before.

For fans of Beach House, Angus & Julia Stone, Mazzy Star, Ben Howard.

Bohren & Der Club Of Gore

      Bohren For Beginners

Since their formation just over 30 years ago, hardly any German band has managed to create such a unique musical cosmos as Bohren & der Club O fGore, from Mühlheim.

With their dark instrumental tracks, Bohren have been able to create a firm fanbase, and renowned musicians such as Mike Patton (Faith No More), Ry-X, John Grant, Soap&Skin and Thor Harris (Swans) have long since fallen for Bohren’s timeless songs.

The wonderfully titled ‘Bohren For Beginners’ now collects all the highlights of the Bohren catalogue in partly remixed versions, as well as a new song, for the first time as a 3LP album; a gateway drug for newcomers as well as for diehard fans.

Since a large part of the Bohren back catalogue has already been deleted for years, musical treasures are unearthed here that have lost none of their quality, and they will still be giving you goosebumps in 20 years.

        Brodka

        Brut

Polish alt-pop superstar Brodka announces new album BRUT; a powerful examination of gender, self-image and society. Hot on the heels of her Speedy Wunderground 7” 'Wrong Party', BRUT was recorded with Boxed In’s Oli Bayston (Kelly Lee Owens, Loyle Carner) and finds Brodka blurring the boundaries between natural and synthetic sounds. Post-punk riffs, icy synths and the serrated, heavily-processed guitar sounds that slice through glittering electro-pop to bring an industrial edge to the brutalism-inspired vision.

Similarly, prior to lockdown, their infamously ferocious live shows had also seen them begin to firmly cement themselves as a must-see live band playing alongside the likes of The Murder Capital, Patti Smith, The Soft Moon and Croatian Amor, as well as touring across the UK and Europe with the likes of Editors.

Third album from Public Service Broadcasting, the brainchild of London-based J. Willgoose, Esq. who, along with his drumming companion, Wrigglesworth, and their bass player, keys and horns man extraordinaire, JFAbraham, is on a quest to inform, educate and entertain audiences around the globe.

Released 7th July, on Every Valley Willgoose takes us on a journey down the mineshafts of South Wales valleys. Yet the record is a metaphor for a much larger, global and social malaise, using the history of coal mining to shine a light on the disenfranchised.
