The Jesus Lizard

Rack

The Jesus Lizard have returned with 'Rack', their first record since 1998. The album features 11 tracks of brisk guitar rock you haven’t heard since… the last time the Jesus Lizard took over a stage in your town. The Jesus Lizard - vocalist David Yow, guitarist Duane Denison, bassist David Wm. Sims, and drummer Mac McNeilly - have returned with a record teeming with the kind of madness needed to beat down today’s AOR mediocrity and piss-perfect pop drivel alike.

Since their inception in Chicago in 1987, The Jesus Lizard has thrilled audiences all over the planet. The impeccable rocket-thrust rhythm section of Sims and McNeilly was the perfect launchpad for Denison’s jagged yet clean-toned riffing and Yow’s mercurial vocalizations manifesting as everything from panicked citizen, reality escapee or wounded sea mammal. the Jesus Lizard’s fury carried on through six studio albums, two live recordings and a brace of singles and EPs.

On 'Rack', The Jesus Lizard have returned reconstituted, refreshed and positively revving. No tepid, bland tracks to show how they’ve “matured” as songwriters. No inane detours into unnecessary genre exercises.

The Jesus Lizard. They might not be young, but they will never, ever get fucking old.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: It's been TWENTY SIX years, and The Jesus Lizard can still rock like there's no tomorrow. Garage flavoured chugging guitar riffs and rolling bass with snapping snare drums and snarling HC vocals. It's as energetic and uncompromising as they ever were. Albini's legacy has left a big impact on the music world, and The Jesus Lizard are but one of them. A great return.

    Dälek

Negro Necro Nekros - 2024 Reissue

Reissue of the album from 1998 that started it all for dälek, this time wth six bonus tracks. The physical includes a 12pg booklet with liner notes by John Morrison and new art from Mikel Elam & Paul Romano.

When Dälek’s debut, Negro Necro Nekros arrived in the Fall of 1998, hip-hop’s aesthetic and commercial conventions were in a state of upheaval. While mainstream rap had more or less completed the process of full integration into mainstream pop culture, underground hip-hop had mounted an aggressive opposition movement in response.

Forged in the fires of the East Coast underground music scene in the 90s, Experimental Hip Hop pioneers Dälek has spent decades carving out a unique niche fusing hardcore Hip Hop, noise and a radical approach to sound. From the very beginning, Dälek came out the gate, following in the footsteps of their predecessors Public Enemy while drawing from influences as varied as My Bloody Valentine and German experimentalists Faust, Dälek have succeeded in adding completely new textural and structural dimensions to rap music. Since 1998, they’ve released seven studio albums and countless EPs, singles and collaborations.

      Melvins

      Tarantula Heart

The Melvins new album Tarantula Heart is like nothing the band has ever done before. Probably the best record they’ve ever recorded. Certainly one of their weirdest. The five song album centers around the mammoth 19-minute opening track “Pain Equals Funny” and the noise laden heavy hitter “Working the Ditch.”

In addition to the core three members, also appearing on the album are second drummer Roy Mayorga (Ministry, Soulfly, Stone Sour and Nausea) and We Are The Asteroid guitar player Gary Chester, who the Melvins recently toured with.

“The way we approached Tarantula Heart was different than any other Melvins’ album,” explains Buzz Osborne. “I had Dale and Roy Mayorga come in and play along with Steven and I to some riffs, then I took those sessions and figured out what parts would work and wrote new music to fit. This isn’t a studio approach we’ve ever taken. Usually we have the songs written BEFORE we start recording!”

Buzz often surprises fans and friends with the diverse influences that factor into his process; you’re just as likely to find him enjoying Judy Garland classics one moment and diving into the raw energy of The Birthday Party the next. Drawing inspiration from the legendary Miles Davis, a master of the improvisation studio approach which showcased the talent and creativity of his collaborators certainly influenced Osborne’s approach to Tarantula Heart.

Without question Tarantula Heart is a huge milestone for the Melvins. it’s rock solid sound wise and looks great with brilliantly executed cover art by Mackie Osborne.

        CNTS

        Thoughts & Prayers

After a whirlwind of tragedies, both global and personal, guitarist Mike Crain (Dead Cross, Retox, Festival Of Dead Deer), drummer Kevin Avery (Retox, Planet B) and vocalist Matt Cronk (Qui) are back with new guitarist Koko Arabian and bassist Rico Adair and their sophomore release.

Following the release of their 2019 debut, Cunts, CNTS were able to squeeze in one short tour before the world went on hold. The lockdown was spent recording and plotting, in preparation for future CNTS endeavors. However, all plans would be shelved when Matt Cronk was injured in a car wreck, resulting in a surgical mishap leaving him with a paralyzed vocal cord, unable to speak, let alone sing. CNTS heavy-heartedly announced their demise. During this period the members of CNTS pursued other projects until winter 2023 when, against the predictions of his doctors, Cronk’s injured vocal cord began to heal and within two months his voice returned. By March CNTS felt confident that they could give it another go.

Reinvigorated by Cronk’s recovery and their new lineup, CNTS spent the rest of the year hard at work on their new record, Thoughts & Prayers, the title inspired by the banality of our collective reaction to crises. With a great deal of inspiration from their recent challenges, CNTS have channelled several years of frustration and hardship into a well articulated and aggressive statement. Songs such as “Smart Mouth,” and “Thoughts And Prayers,” chronicle Cronk’s pain and anger throughout his various injuries and subsequent recovery. “I Don’t Work For You,” and “Eating You Alive,” deal with the inequity inherent in modern life. “For A Good Time (Don’t Call Her)” is a screed about the age-old theme of fighting with one’s romantic partner.

          General Patton Vs. The X-Ecutioners

General Patton Vs. The X-Ecutioners - Ipecac 25th Anniversary

Next year is Ipecac’s 25th Anniversary, and they couldn’t have made it this long without the support of independent record shops. To start the celebrations, they’re releasing the 2005 album from General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners on vinyl for the first time ever… and it’s only available to independent retailers, pressed on Silver Streak coloured vinyl.

The release teams up Mike Patton, the legendary frontman for Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk and countless others, with one of the most respected DJ crews in all of hip-hop, The XEcutioners.

The collaboration came about after both factions performed a few improvisational live shows together. With the sweet scent of chemistry soon wafting through the air, it was decided to take it a step further - collaborate on a full-on recording. What you get are 23 tracks that approximate a head-on collision between hip-hop and the wild and whacky world of Ipecac.

              Oxbow

              Love's Holiday

“I’ve always been chagrined that no one understood that our songs were love songs,” says Oxbow vocalist and lyricist Eugene Robinson, while reflecting on the band’s output from the last 35 years. Love may not have been the most obvious muse in their earlier work, but the subject has never been more apparent than on their eighth studio album, and first new music in six years, ‘Love’s Holiday’. “But now listening to a record of exclusively love songs I can see how no one saw that,” Robinson admits. “My problem is how I think about love as this affects how I feel about it, instead of the other way around.”

The band again worked with Grammy-winning engineer and co-producer Joe Chiccarelli (White Stripes, My Morning Jacket). ‘Love’s Holiday’ is the third Oxbow album recorded with Chiccarelli, and the band members uniformly state that their trust in him allowed the album to venture into even more inviting directions, featuring guest appearances from Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Jellyfish), Lingua Ignota, a choir and a string quartet.

Artwork by Aaron Turner (Isis, Sumac).

For fans of Mark Lanegan, Soundgarden, Nick Cave, The Jesus Lizard.

                              King Garbage

                              Heavy Metal Greasy Love

King Garbage, with their contemporary take on American Soul, return with a new album, ‘Heavy Metal Greasy Love’, released via Ipecac Recordings.

Long-time friends and GRAMMY Award-nominated producers Zach Cooper and Vic Dimotsis have quietly impacted pop, R&B and hiphop with production credits for everyone from The Weeknd and SZA to Ellie Goulding, Gallant and Billy Porter.

In 2021, Vic and Zach co-wrote ‘Sing’ for Jon Batiste’s ‘We Are’. It gathered eight GRAMMY Award nominations, including Album Of The Year. They also penned ‘Sweeter’ (featuring Terrace Martin) on Leon Bridges’ ‘Gold-Diggers Sound’, which notched a GRAMMY nod in the category of Best R&B Album.

It’s a taste of retro without being a reproduction. The music is crispy, searing, spacious, sandy and welded with perfect dimes at the seams.

Breaking from the ‘rough and ruddy’ vibe of their first record, ‘Make It Sweat’, King Garbage incorporated a rock ‘n’ roll spirit within this soul sphere. They teased the album with ‘Piper’ and ‘Peanut Butter Kisses’ before revealing the single ‘Busy On A Saturday Night’. On the track, vocals hum barely above a whisper as clean guitar wraps around horns before the high register hook takes hold. It ends on a crescendo straight out of a Sixties cop show.

Bass-y piano revs up ‘Monster Truck’, which Zach calls “somewhere between musical theater and classic rock.”

Meanwhile, ‘Checkmate’ moves ice cold vocals and boisterous horns across the board. Saxophone, flute, and clarinet soundtrack a ‘Fargolike tale’ on ‘Snow’, unfolding “like what a big band should play in a strip club.” In the end, ‘Heavy Metal Greasy Love’ is as smooth as King Garbage are.

For fans of The Black Pumas, Alabama Shakes, Daptone Records.

‘Hostile Ambient Takeover’ is the band’s 2002 album available on LP for the first time, pressed onto baby pink coloured vinyl.

                                  Working With God

‘Working With God’ is the new studio album from Melvins, featuring the 1983 line-up of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and Mike Dillard. This is the first time the trio have recorded together since ‘Tres Cabrones’.

‘Working With God’ is Melvins’ 28th (yes, 28th) full-length studio release and their first since 2018’s ‘Pinkus Abortion Technician’.

The band have been one of the most lauded hard rock bands to have helped develop the Grunge and Sludge scenes.

The new album is one of their most melodic and playful records - not just another ‘metal’ record, this will translate easily to hard rock and even mainstream rock fans as well.

The songs on the album are originals except for their take on Harry Nilsson’s classic ‘Fuck You’ and the well-known ‘Good Night Sweetheart’ that finishes off the album.

                                    Oscillospira

Brooklyn based composer/producer/performer JG Thirlwell (Foetus, Manorexia, Xordox) - who has collaborated with the likes of Zola Jesus, Melvins, Swans, Kronos Quartet and is the composer for the highly acclaimed animated TV series ‘Archer’ and ‘Venture Bros’ - and Swedish multiinstrumentalist and theatre music composer Simon Steensland collaborate on a new album, ‘Oscillospira’.

Different yet complementary, both creators make idiosyncratic music that can be characterised by dramatic intensity, shadowy suspense, darkness and light, sometimes breath-taking and always evocative cinematics. ‘Oscillospira’ is an odyssey of dark chamber prog with a cinematic bent, a largely instrumental album with eerie choral parts.

Melvins released their album ‘Pinkus Abortion Technician’ in Spring 2018. It featured both ongoing Melvins bassplayer Steven McDonald (Redd Kross, OFF!) and Butthole Surfers and occasional Melvins bottom ender Jeff Pinkus on bass. ‘Stop Moving To Florida’ is a medley of the James Gang’s ‘Stop’ and Butthole Surfers’ ‘Moving To Florida’. The band also cover The Beatles’ ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ and Butthole Surfers’ ‘Graveyard’ on the eight-song release.

                                            Dead Cross

Dead Cross, the SoCal hardcore outfit featuring Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Misfits), Mike Patton (Faith No More, Tomahawk), Justin Pearson (The Locust, Retox) and Michael Crain (Retox, Festival of Dead Deer), release a self-titled, four-track EP via Ipecac Recordings.

Dead Cross emerged out of a series of impractical schemes, fallen-through plans and last-minute musical experimentation. Shows were scheduled before a single song was written, fans were formed before even one show was played. The chaos of its creation seems apt; after all, the band is comprised entirely of artists who have thrived playing tightly-coiled turmoil - intelligent dissonance disguised as disorder.

Consisting of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomas, Mr. Bungle), Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer, Misfits, Suicidal Tendencies), Justin Pearson (The Locust, Retox, Head Wound City) and Michael Crain (Retox), the impressive, expansive and eclectic list of prior bands collectively played in would be enough to ensure the unyielding ferocity of the music... but a resume isn’t necessary, here. Dead Cross stands on their own, speaking volumes with their multilayered evil-genius vocals, manic guitar riffs and brutal rhythms.

A Walk With Love & Death

The dual albums find the trio of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and Steve McDonald showcasing two distinct sides to the band’s music: Death, a proper Melvins’ release and Love, the score to the Jesse Nieminen directed, self-produced short also titled A Walk With Love and Death

“This was a huge undertaking,” explained band ringleader Buzz Osborne. “All three things: the album, the soundtrack and the film are benchmarks for us.”

Drummer Dale Crover added, “A Walk With Love and Death is one giant, dark, moody, psychotic head trip! Not for the faint of heart. You'll sleep with the lights on after listening.”

The albums, which include guests Joey Santiago (The Pixies), Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes/Crystal Fairy) and Anna Waronker (That Dog), were co-produced with engineer Toshi Kosai.

                                                Crystal Fairy

Crystal Fairy are a new band featuring Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes), Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (Mars Volta, At The Drive In), King Buzzo (The Melvins, Fantomas) and Dale Crover (The Melvins, Altamont). It might seem like an unlikely musical match until you hear the primal pounding energy that’s psychedelic, psychotic, off kilter, unsafe and uncommon.

The whole idea for Crystal Fairy began when The Melvins and Le Butcherettes toured together and The Melvins started doing the song ‘Rebel Girl’ with Teri at the end of their set.

Teri sings, plays guitar and keyboards, Omar plays bass, Buzzo plays guitar and Dale’s on drums. It’s simple, sturdy and perfect. Between the four members they have like 150 years of musical experience and something like 40,000 records. Crystal Fairy are different, a stunning combination of punk, metal, psycho rock, blood rock and rabid rhythmic excitement.

                                                  Melvins

                                                  Basses Loaded

It’s 2016 and the Melvins have an album called ‘Basses Loaded’ that features six different bass players. The new Melvins bass players for this go around are Steve McDonald from the legendary Los Angeles glam punk band Redd Kross and their old friend Krist Novoselic from Nirvana.

Making return appearances are former and probably future bass players Jeff Pinkus (Butthole Surfers), Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle / Fantomas), Jared Warren (Big Business) and Dale Crover.

According to King Buzzo, “More is more! As hard as it might be to believe, all of these bass players contribute something of their own to ‘Basses Loaded’ which gives the whole album a good kick right in its big fat ass.”

Recording with Krist Novoselic is something that should have happened a long time ago but rumour has it that he’s been busy doing things like playing bass with Paul McCartney and getting his ass inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Butthole Surfer and Honky member Jeff Pinkus played on the Melvins’ album ‘Hold It In’ and has toured with the band in the last few years.

Trevor Dunn recorded the ‘Freak Puke’ album with the band as well as played bass on the Melvins’ record-setting US tour where they played all 50 states plus DC in 51 days. This was also released as a tour DVD last year entitled ‘Across The USA In 51 Days, The Movie!’

Jared Warren is a Melvins veteran, having recorded ‘The Senile Animal’, ‘Nude With Boots’ and ‘The Bride Screamed Murder ‘albums, as well as the ‘The Bulls And The Bees’ EP.

Dale Crover is usually the Melvins’ drummer but slid over to bass when they brought back original drummer Mike Dillard for the ‘Tres Cabrones’ album (this line up was called Melvins 1983).

Steve McDonald has been in Redd Kross since he was 11 and he’s also a founding member of Los Angeles hardcore band OFF!.

                                                    Le Butcherettes

                                                    Shave The Pride

‘Shave The Pride’ comes from Mexican trio Le Butcherettes’ third album ‘A Raw Youth’.

The track, which according to the band’s Teri Gender Bender was originally titled ‘Pogonophobia’ (the fear of beards), is a commentary on societal apathy: “The outrage and frustration are this time directed in particular to society’s ‘beard’,” explains Gender Bender. “The beard symbolizes our unwillingness to view all perceptions of the story, empathy, angles, life… hiding behind the mass… mass media, laziness, etc.”

Side B is an unreleased track featuring King Buzzo from the Melvins on guitar and vocals.

What they’re saying about Teri Gender Bender:

‘Sol Invictus’, Faith No More’s highly anticipated follow-up to ‘Album Of The Year’, arrives via Reclamation Recordings / Ipecac Recordings.

‘Sol Invictus’ is the band’s first new album in 18 years.

‘Sol Invictus’ was produced by Bill Gould and recorded in the band’s Oakland, California studio.

Faith No More have influenced bands of all genres, including System Of A Down, Incubus, Muse and more.

The single ‘Motherf*cker’ heralded the arrival of the album and was followed by ‘Superhero’. Both songs feature on the album along with eight other brand new tracks.

The album features some very special guests including keyboard player Joey Karam (The Locust), Italian guitar maverick Stefano Pilia (who plays regularly with the likes of Mike Watt, David Grubbs and Rokia Traore) and, perhaps most unexpectedly, a field recording of an indigenous Shipibo medicine man recorded by Zu bass player Massimo during his travels around the Amazon.

The band have previously toured with Mike Patton as Zu / Patton Quartet.

“... combining the abstractions of Sonic Youth with the out-there explorations of the best free jazz” - The Times

The Unsemble is a collaboration of three very notable musical personalities....

You may know of Duane Denison (guitar, keyboards) from his work with Tomahawk and The Jesus Lizard, among others. He's in fine form here. You might know of Alexander Hacke (bass, electronics) from his work with Einsturzende Neubauten, Crime and the City Solution, and his film and production work. He's at the top of his game these days. You probably don't know of Brian Kotzur (drums, keyboards) but you should. He has worked with Silver Jews and Harmony Korine, both quite popular with indie hipsters, slackers, etc. He's got moves, just you wait.

Recorded in the summer of 2012, these 15 instrumental tracks are the result of an intense 2 week period of sonic exploration. Some are carefully composed and arranged, others are freely improvised. The moods range from calm and dreamy to agitated and chaotic.

This supergroup is transcending far beyond their past projects and cultivating a brand new sound. When asked about the project, Denison stated in a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone: “We wanted to work on something that was typically not what we do.” He continued, “something that’s not so rock and riff-based and overdriven in that way.”

The Unsemble, a 15-song collection recorded in Denison’s adopted hometown of Nashville, meets the legendary Jesus Lizard guitar player’s hopes of a more organic feel with the band effortlessly volleying between careful compositions and improvisation. The result is an album that is experimental, clever and inclusive of numerous subgenres and cultures.

"If ever there was a soundtrack in search of its correspondent in the world of film, this album Guano Padano would definitely be in good company with the works of Fellini, Leone, Jarmusch and Sofia Coppola."

It would not do much more than the words of Joey Burns of Calexico, referring to the band's first album, to best describe the world around which the band of Danilo Gallo (bass), Alessandro "Asso" Stefana (guitar) and Zeno De Rossi (drums), the latter also forces the band to Vinicio Capossela.

The imagery is rich in nuances, just as the sunset of one of those western movies so much love that the three and now has provided inspiration for the main round which bind: there are morriconiane the atmosphere of the films of Sergio Leone, but also of dozens of smaller films that marked an unrepeatable Italian cinema season. And then the desert rock, country, folk, jazz cross, of course, the blues and even surf influences.

The first eponymous album, released first for the U.S. Important Records (October 2009) and later in Italy for Tremoloa (April 2010), is a splendid example of the class of Guano Padano, accompanied for the occasion by a number of guests from Dizziness: Alessandro Alessandroni (whistling the unforgettable soundtracks morriconiane), Gary Lucas (guitarist Jeff Buckley and Captain Beefheart), Chris Speed (clarinet, collaborator of John Zorn etc.) and Bobby Solo, called upon to interpret an old song Hank Williams, Ramblin 'Man, with a master's touch.

After a long series of accolades from the international press and also a valuable 45 rpm - Tremoloa in collaboration with Bronson - where have reread Our two classic westerns such as "Hey, man ... there Sabata, you closed! " and "The day of wrath", the Guano Padano are going to do their real comeback record with "2", easy way behind which lies another great job.

Among American, echoes of the Middle and Far East, the night freight trains passing through Nashville and Cajun cuisine and flavors of Abruzzo, "2" is an album incredibly rich, almost to leaf through a photo album with passion until new and never predictable epiphanies. Around the trio were again gathered names of the highest level as those, among others, Marc Ribot (John Zorn, Tom Waits, etc..), Even Chris Speed, the versatile Mike Patton (who has included in its own project Stefana Mondo Cane), Paolo Botti (viola), Vincenzo Vasi (theremin to) and Paul Niehaus of Lambchop.

Possibly the soundtrack to a very dark fever induced nightmare, the momentary ambience is followed by chaos and confusion. Needless to say this won't be a daytime radio hit!!!
