Andrei Nikolsky

Synthi Shuffle / Synthi Sunrise

Taking inspiration from late 70’s / early 80’s French library music and electronically inclined composers like J.P Decerf, Sauveur Mallia and Yan Tregger, Andrei Nikolsky conjures up cosmic vibrations of some long-lost Tele Music library, filled with squeaky synths, shimmering solinas and funky clavs, with help from Kanpai Quartet members Charlie Searle on bass and Euan McGinty on guitar.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: One cosmic boogie jam plus one cinematic schmoozy love affair equals two reasons to be cheerful on this dreamy Andrei Nikolsky 7".

Pleasurewood

Off The Wall / Boogie Nights

Dive head first into a parallel universe where the facts of music history have been turned into pliable putty and an alternative world where Rod Temperton never met Quincy Jones, never joined Heatwave and never wrote songs for the greatest pop soul artists of the 70’s and 80’s BUT instead, hung out at a West Berlin commune with a cast of trans-continental musicians playing a hybrid of post-psychedelic rock with overtones of Ghanaian funk and early 80s synth experimentation all the while exploring the mystic tundras of the mind and the celestial palisades of the soul.

This is the parallel universe that the Suffolk based studio dwellers, Pleasurewood inhabit. Let them take you on a journey through some of Temperton’s biggest hits in only a way that Pleasurewood’s genre defying style and studio prowess will allow.

Forthcoming album 'Heatwaves' kicks off on vinyl, with a tasty 7” double A side that is dancefloor ready...

It’s an off-kilter affair from side one with ‘Off The Wall’ swirling in a dense fog of phased bass guitar and emerging onto the shore with jutting hips to a groove underpinned by a sweating percussion section and early forms of synthesiser soaring above like crazed Pteranodons.

On the flip side is ‘Boogie Nights’ striding slowly and purposefully into frame with an apocalyptic Bass guitar line riding a solitary cowbell before a synthesiser clarion ushers in the break and the familiar hook with Moog thunder-strikes glowering in the distance.

The 7" includes digital download of the 7-tracks album 'Heatwaves'.
Limited to 200 copies.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Second 7" from these burgeoning Surrey-based library funk songsmiths. What makes this really special is you can truly hear the raw, in the red, analogue production pressed faithfully onto the record. One of those sevens for the Klipschorns!

Don Harper

Thoughtful Popper / Chamber Pop

2 classic tracks from the JW Theme Music vault collection that have been sampled by Danger Mouse for his collaborative project with MF DOOM “The Mouse & The Mask”.

"Thoughtful Popper" is a smooth, cool, retro, orchestral, Latin-jazz funk (phew!) instrumental with laid back grooves, catchy riffs and sultry bluesy flute and violin melodies.

"Chamber Pop" is a retro, groovy and mysterious orchestral jazz-funk film score instrumental with beguiling violin and flute melodies and mellow moments.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Real heads library funk here. Sampled by Danger Mouse and MF DOOM. These two originals are an absolute decadence of orchestral grooves with lush instrumentation and skilled drumming their driver. Nice presentation too. What's not to love?!

Psycho 2000 / White Spiritual

"Psycho 2000" - a dark but funky theme that begins with an occulting Italian echo-oscillator drone that is soon followed by pulsating bass and breakbeat drums, leads to tremolo guitars, an ostinato on electric mandolas, strings climbing eloquent ladders, otherworldly electronics, and a cinematic finale.

An evocation of a parade of wooden nutcracker soldiers elaborately dressed in gold-trimmed black uniforms down a wide avenue decorated with mardi gras beads and animal skulls upon golden cobblestones toward a tornado spiraling out purple-hued glissandos and curlicues of elephant smoke.

"White Spiritual" - head nod action, the twinkling of a late 60’s Vox Continental II with sickly transistors, the noodling matrix of an intergalactic telephone exchange carried on a bed of bouncy bass with a firm backbeat.

The Johnny Guitar Watson-esque bite and sting of a ‘67 Teisco guitar preludes slabs of unison dark brown moog and organ giving way to the dance of fingers over the black naturals and white sharps of the Continental II.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Hefty library breaks double header that's bound to tickle the fancy of potential beatsmiths, rappers, funk DJs and, of course, 45 collectors. The drums crack, the guitars fuzz and the organs chime in a glorious cacophany!
