This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours - National Album Day 2025 Edition

This Is My Truth is one of the Manics’ most successful albums, commercially and critically. This 2LP release comes on Sky and Sand coloured vinyl in the original 1998 artwork. 168 Songs Of Hatred And Failure: A History Of Manic Street Preachers

The story of Manic Street Preachers is unique in pop. Raging out of the stricken mining communities of south Wales in the late 80s, they were bonded by friendships, family ties and a self-styled 'geometry of contempt', whereby James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore would orchestrate the daring intellectual broadsides written by Richey Edwards and Nicky Wire. Seemingly condemned to mere cult status by a cruel juncture of artistic triumph, commercial failure and personal despair, the story took an agonising twist when the tragedy of Edwards' 1995 disappearance was followed by a remarkable rebirth built upon 'A Design For Life's hymn to the band's working-class roots, and then the award-winning, multi-million-selling album Everything Must Go, a majestic soundtrack to history and loss.

Less than five years later, Manic Street Preachers played to 60,000 at the national stadium of Wales and had their second UK Number 1 single. Subsequent output has confirmed the band as both a wellspring of restless creativity and a barometer of the cultural conversation. Because it was music that saved them, it's through the prism of their music that Keith Cameron tells the definitive story of Manic Street Preachers, drawing on many hours of new interviews to dive deep into 168 songs, from 1988's debut single 'Suicide Alley' to the late day peaks of 2025's album Critical Thinking.

Writing with the band's full co-operation, his book charts the dynamic evolution of a universe in which Karl Marx and Kylie Minogue happily co-exist, that accords Rush and The Clash equal favour, and where Morrissey & Marr meet Torvill & Dean via Nietzsche and New Order in a single four-minute pop song - all in the name of what Nicky Wire himself calls 'the fabulous disaster' of Manic Street Preachers.

      Critical Thinking

The Manic Street Preachers return with their most urgent album in years. This is a record of opposites colliding - of dialectics trying to find a path of resolution. While the music has an effervescence and an elegiac uplift, most of the words deal with the cold analysis of the self, the exception being the three lyrics by James (Dean Bradfield) which look for and hopefully find answers in people, their memories, language and beliefs.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Their fifteenth studio album sees the Manic Street Preachers in fine melodic spirits, with soaring hooks and that classic guitar sound from JDB perfectly winding around Wire's athletic bass guitar and crunchy vocal hooks. Yet another classic piece of songwriting skill from one of the most storied bands in the game.

Manic Street Preachers’ The Holy Bible - 33 1/3

In August 1994, Manic Street Preachers released The Holy Bible, a dark, fiercely intelligent album that explored such themes as mental illness, murder and war. Richey Edwards, the band’s lyricist and motive force, vanished five months later; he was never found. In his absence The Holy Bible entered the rock canon alongside Joy Division’s Closer and Nirvana’s In Utero, the valedictory works of troubled young men.

This book tells the dramatic story of Manic Street Preachers' masterpiece. Tracing the album's origins in the Valleys, an industrialised region of South Wales where the band spent their formative years, the author argues that The Holy Bible can be seen as a meditation on the uses and abuses of history.

            Know Your Enemy

Manic Street Preachers release a radically reimagined version of their 6th album ‘Know Your Enemy’. The new version of the album has been entirely remixed and reconstructed to form two separate albums as originally planned.

This deluxe release includes two previously unheard ‘forgotten’ tracks: ‘Studies in Paralysis’ and ‘Rosebud’.

Following the success of 1998’s’ This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours’, Manic Street Preachers planned an ambitious follow-up to be released as two distinct albums: an aggressive, rapid fire return to their roots called ‘Solidarity’ and ‘Door To The River’, a more conciliatory, reflective collection. During the recording sessions, the trio got cold feet and settled on a single album that forced often conflicting ideas to sit side by side on the same record. ‘Know Your Enemy’ was launched in February 2001 with a show at Teatro Karl Marx in Havana in front of the Cuban leader and charted at No.2 in the UK the following week, going on to see over half a million copies worldwide. The singles taken from the album: ‘So Why So Sad’, ‘Found That Soul’, ‘Ocean Spray’ and ‘Let Robeson Sing’ all reached the Top 20.

Whilst going through the band’s archive to put together an anniversary version of ‘Know Your Enemy’, Nicky Wire found the original tapes of ‘Solidarity’ and ‘Door To The River’ that he’d made up in the studio during recording. When he put forward the idea of recreating those records, James Dean Bradfield agreed on the condition that he could remix the entire record with the band’s longtime studio partner Dave Eringa. The new mixes would bring a clarity to each record, losing extraneous studio effects and digital noise from the ‘Solidarity’ songs and stripping away unnecessary orchestration and embellishment from the tracks that made up ‘Door To The River’.

Author and long-term band collaborator Robin Turner explains in his expansive sleeve notes that this release is “the Director’s Cut of ‘Know Your Enemy’. The picture has been painstakingly restored, cleaned up, brightened. Although it doesn’t aim to replace the original, it most certainly enhances it.”

The vinyl edition ‘Know Your Enemy’ presents ‘Solidarity’ and ‘Door To The River’ in the same order as originally planned in 2000. Each of the CD packages features those records in full plus outtakes, unused mixes by Tom Lord-Alge and tracks featured on the original ‘Know Your Enemy’ that aren’t on the two restructured albums. All formats feature previously unseen photos from the recording sessions taken by regular collaborator Mitch Ikeda.

              Manic Street Preachers

              The Ultra Vivid Lament

‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ is the 14th studio album from Manic Street Preachers. It is both reflection and reaction; a record that gazes in isolation across a cluttered room, fogged by often painful memories, to focus on an open window framing a gleaming vista of land melting into sea and endless sky.

Musically, ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ is inspired by a formative years record box (ABBA, post-Eno Roxy, the Bunnymen, Fables-era REM, Lodger) though the end result could only be the unique union of James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire and Sean Moore, collectively one of the UK’s most consistently brilliant rock’n’roll bands for over three decades.

Gold Against The Soul (2020 Remastered Edition)

Manic Street Preachers announce the reissue of their 1993 album, ‘Gold Against The Soul’ on Columbia/Sony Music. A firm fan favourite, their second studio album will now be available as part of a beautiful, limited edition, 120-page hardbound A4 book, featuring incredible unseen images from the band’s long-time photographic collaborator Mitch Ikeda, annotated by Nicky Wire plus handwritten lyric sheets. The book also includes x2 CDs comprising the original album plus x11 previously unheard tracks across demos, b sides, remixes and a live recording of the Clash track ‘What’s My Name’, remastered by James Dean Bradfield. There will also be a 180g vinyl version of the remastered album with download codes to the extra tracks on CD1 and a digital version featuring all the tracks.

'Gold Against The Soul' entered the Top 10 on release just over a year after their debut album 'Generation Terrorists' and saw the band shift musically to a classic rock sound.  Lead single 'From Despair To Where' was followed by 'La Tristesse Durera (Scream To A Sigh)', 'Roses In The Hospital' and 'Life Becoming A Landslide'.  Produced by Dave Eringa who had been working in various guises with the band and continues to do so to this day, the album was recorded over six weeks at Outside/Hookend Studios.

                    The Holy Bible

The third album from The Manics isn’t the easiest of listens. It’s a tense and at times harrowing collection of songs, recorded shortly before Richey James hospitalisation for depression, and subsequent disappearance. The lyrics, whether personal or political, are graphic and unflinchingly bleak. And even their usually buoyant glam hooks are tighter and more intense. It’s a powerful statement and still remains one of The Manics’ finest moments.

Produced by Steve Albini and recorded live at Rockfield Studios in Wales during the Winter of 2008, "Journal for Plague Lovers" features lyrics left behind by former guitarist Richey Edwards across all 13 new tracks.
Nicky Wire said of the decision to use Richey's words after all this time, 'The brilliance and intelligence of the lyrics dictated that we had to finally use them. The use of language is stunning and topics include The Grande Odalisque by Ingres, Marlon Brando, Giant Haystacks, celebrity, consumerism and dysmorphia, all reiterating the genius and intellect of Richard James Edwards'.

Musically the band draw on their classic "Holy Bible" sound with elements of Nirvana's "In Utero", as well as a delicate, beautiful acoustic side. The cover features an original piece of Jenny Saville, whose painting also graced the cover of 1994's "The Holy Bible".
