Lightning Bolt

Hypermagic Mountain - Reissue

“‘Hypermagic Mountain’ is Lightning Bolt’s fourth, most well-oiled album: song-by-song it chugs into rockier Van Halen, Fucking Champs, or Orthrelm territory.” - Pitchfork.

‘Hypermagic Mountain’, Lightning Bolt’s fourth album has been unavailable for nearly a decade since its 2005 release.

Back as a double LP including a full drawing by Brian Chippendale as the D side etching.

Recorded at Machines with Magnets and Lightning Bolt’s home by Dave Auchenbach.

Lightning Bolt play with abandon that is unmatched and remarkably undiluted and this album is just one more example of that raw power and sound.

    Ride The Skies

‘Ride The Skies’ is the second album by Lightning Bolt and this re-release makes it available to fans for the first time since its original release. Compared to their first album it’s cleaner and tighter, recorded in studio rather than live. Lightning Bolt never fail to make magic, filling a space with loud, raw sound. Sounds of synth or guitar turn out to be bass and riffs become patterns, become a beat in the background, become a wall of noise, become a clear sound above it all. Lightning Bolt are known for the sound that truly comes into its own in this album. Recent Lightning Bolt re-releases seem to move as quickly as the Brians playing live, as old and new fans jump at the rare opportunity to finally get an old favourite in a shiny new jacket.

      Lightning Bolt

“Certain loud guitar rock records serve as brain erasers, a form of shock therapy zapping through aural inputs and (to mix metaphors) cleaning the proverbial clock. Lightning Bolt is one such thing.” - LA Times

Since their first moment it seems like they’ve been as electric as their name suggests. ‘Lightning Bolt’, their first album, captures that energy in a raw form. Famously lo-fi, this is the album that’s been described as most feeling like being at one of their shows. It’s difficult to listen and not want to jump with the crowd it feels like must be huddled around the amp producing an incredible wave of noise, astonishingly coming from just two musicians. You can hear the threads of their later work; use of repetition, a sense of grinding and building, noise melting to guitar solos. This album is loud and the riffs repeated become mesmerizing as they warp slowly thru the songs.

‘Lightning Bolt’ has not been available on vinyl since its original pressing of 740 in 1999.

First time ever released as a double LP. LP1 is the original release, LP2 was recorded at the same time and has never been issued on vinyl.

Packaged in a two-sided silkscreen wrap using original designs by Brian Chippendale and printed by Crosshair.

        Lightning Bolt

        Sonic Citadel

For their seventh full length, ‘Sonic Citadel’, Brians Gibson and Chippendale have done the daring, stripping away some of the distortion mask to reveal the naked pop forms as never before.

Throughout their 25-year history Lightning Bolt have toured the world, performing at Coachella, ATP, Festivals, Pitchfork Music Festival, Austin Psych Fest and FYF Fest, to name a few.

Brian Chippendale has collaborated with Björk, Boredoms, Andrew W.K. and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. Brian’s comics are published with Drawn & Quarterly and Picturebox. Brian is also in Black Pus.

Brian Gibson’s game Thumper, produced by his own company Drool, was awarded the 2019 Apple Design Award, was on Gamespot, Hardcore Gamer and IDN’s Best Of 2016 lists and won countless other awards.

          STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: With the grinding guitars and machinated percussive blasts, Lightning Bolt have always proved an intimating presence. 'Sonic Citadel' sees them embracing more of the rapid-fire punk aesthetic than their more dirgy stoner sludge, and is all the better for the glimmers of melody and old-school thrash-punk fire within.

          Wonderful Rainbow

For the 25th Anniversary of Lightning Bolt, Thrill Jockey reissue Lightning Bolt’s pivotal album ‘Wonderful Rainbow’, originally released in 2003 on Load Records. Lightning Bolt will be releasing a new album later this year.

Legendary band Lightning Bolt’s ‘Wonderful Rainbow’ is one of the most quintessential albums to come from the underground in the last 20 years. Included in lists like Pitchfork’s 200 Top Albums Of The 2000s and the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Lightning Bolt’s seminal record solidified their place as pillars of the underground community.

‘Wonderful Rainbow’ saw the duo of Brian Chippendale (drums/vocals) and Brian Gibson (bass) being compared to the likes of Slayer, Ornette Coleman and early Boredoms and captured the bristling, immeasurable energy of their mythical live shows, which continue to astonish audiences today.

Throughout their 25 year history Lightning Bolt have toured the world, performing at Coachella, ATP Festivals, Pitchfork Music Festival, Austin Psych Fest and FYF Fest to name a few.

Brian Chippendale releases music on Thrill Jockey with his solo project Black Pus, has collaborated with Björk, Boredoms, Andrew W.K. and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and has published several books of his art through Drawn & Quarterly and Picturebox.

In 2017, Brian Gibson developed the video game ‘Thumper’ with his own company, Drool.

‘Wonderful Rainbow’ is released for the first time ever with the full artwork as initially conceived by Lightning Bolt in 2003. Front and back artwork familiar to fans is still there but now in a full wrap, only previously available in the very early screenprinted version. This wrap has full-colour artwork on the inside, originally only available as a small insert. The LP jacket itself is never before released artwork created at the time of the album. All artwork has been created by Brian Chippendale.
