I was probably playing Mario on the SNES and Bomberman on the Amiga when this masterpiece first landed on Black Market in '94. Sadly I missed out on arguably the finest LP from unquestionably THE greatest house producer ever! While not a complete departure from the thumping dance floor sound fans were used to, the combination of ambient compositions, tropical melodies, jazzy refrains and breezy percussion took critics by surprise on its original release, leading to some mixed reviews. Well, twenty years later and it’s undoubtedly a masterpiece, looming large over the current crop of house producers and their future primitive explorations. If you’re struggling to catch my drift, lend an ear to ‘Caribbean Coast’ and drift away with the likes of Ruf Dug, András and Young Marco.

says: Out of press since the nineties, this masterpiece was slept on when it first came out, but has matured like fine wine, pointing the direction for subsequent generations of house producers. Tropical, jazzy and effortlessly musical, this is my favourite record from the legend.

Jack Cutter / Paqua

Serpent Strut / Ruby Running Faker - Larry Heard / Emperor Machine Remixes

Bonus cuts from the Claremont 56 Box Set featuring tracks and mixes not featured on the original release. Chicago legend Larry Heard is joined by UK mainstay Andy Meecham in his EMperor Machine alias as they remix the amazing Paqua and Jack Cutter. First up, "Serpent Strutt" by Jack Cutter gets a spacious and soulful rerub by Mr. Fingers who emphasizes the relaxed nature of the track through a beachy, waves lapping at your ankles kinda vibe that really resonates with the OG whilst simultaneiously shining a light on Larry's unique, effortless style. On the flip, EM takes Paqua's "Ruby Running Faker" into squelchy new disco territory complete with boogie bass, dubbed out delays and echo laden hand claps. Rock solid but with a bit of give around the hips, this'll make ideal warm up tackle... Super limited and really quite good - you know what to do!

says: Nice Brucey bonus for fans of the ultimate Balearic collection. Larry Heard and Emperor Machine's remix never made the boxset, but they're more than worthy additions to this most pretigious collection. Super limited too so don't dilly dally.

Larry Heard

25 Years From Alpha EP

Woah, Blackmarket follow their splendid Todd Osborne twelve with another classic in the making by Larry Heard. This EP features three tracks that prove again the man's genius and unparalleled talent in squeezing true emotions and funk out of his machines that lift you into a state of euphoria. The A-side holds a long, midtempo 80s electro-funk groove with beautiful richly textures synth melodies. Flip over for a slightly rawer fingers style workout with highly emotive strings and a perfect end of the night tune with a gorgeous piano solo showing Heard's strong roots in jazz. Music from a different stratosphere - a record to treasure!

says: What a great surprise when I found that this was coming to the shop. One of my favourite tracks ever '25 Years From Alpha' is a perfect mix of beauty and sadness. A delicate melody and a contagious bassline are the driving elements in this hypnotic deep house tune. It oozes passion and melody. It sounds Detroit but is also looking forward. The TR-909 is ominous through the 15 minutes. It is just so well done that you will not notice that quarter of an hour gone. This is an absolute diamond and will leave the shop rather fast.
