JAZZ SAMBA

Cannonball Adderley & Sergio Mendes

And The Bossa Rio Sextet

Although Cannonball Adderley experimented with assorted styles and formats during his career, Cannonball's Bossa Nova [aka Cannonball Adderley and the Bossa Rio Sextet] continues to be an unusual work in his discography. This was not only true because of the Brazilian style to which the LP is devoted, but also because he isn't featured in the company of his usual collaborators, nor any other American jazz musicians. Instead, he's backed by a combo of Brazilian musicians led by the great pianist Sergio Mendes and drummer Dom Um Romao, who later became a member of Weather Report.

"Cannonball Adderley, who had to do some agile dodging to avoid being contaminated by the 'soul jazz' flood, has moved into bossa nova with equally perceptive discrimination. His set with the Bossa Rio Sextet is one of the most distinguished collections he has turned out and he produces some of the most commanding and gorgeously stated solos he has ever recorded."- John S. Wilson, ****1/2 DownBeat

Joao Gilberto

Desafinado - 2024 Reissue

Born in Bahia, Brazil, singer/ song writer Joao Gilberto (1931-2019) was a true legend of bossa nova. While Antonio Carlos Jobim set the standard for the creation of bossa nova in the mid-'50s, with songs like "The Girl From Ipanema" and "Desafinado", it was Gilberto who brilliantly reimagined and, arguably, defined the genre. This edition includes the complete contents of the album Brazil's Brilliant Joao Gilberto, which received a five- star rating from AllMusic, plus several of his greatest hits from his early years. "This vitally important record introduced Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and thus, bossa nova to the United States in 1961, a year before Stan Getz scored a hit with 'Desafinado'."- AllMusic (Richard S. Ginell)

Vinicius De Moraes

Berimbau

Brazilian poet, lyricist, essayist and playwright, Vinicius de Moraes (1913-1980) became a seminal figure in modern Brazilian music and literature. Along with his longtime collaborator, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist/ guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994), known in Brazil as Tom Jobim, he composed hundreds of songs which have become true classics and have transcended the bossa nova, as they continue to be played and recorded by countless singers and instrumentalists within Brazil and throughout the world. This LP edition compiles some of Vinicius' earliest recordings.
