Nina Hagen

HiGHWAY TO HEAVEN

Fifteen years after 'Personal Jesus', Nina Hagen returns to her great passion for gospel music with 'HiGHWAY TO HEAVEN'. Together with producer Warner Poland, her band, and friends such as Nana Mouskouri and Gitte Hænning, she reinterprets classics—from Mahalia Jackson to Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Kitty Wells.

The album combines Southern gospel, Americana, reggae, and punk: from the powerful reworking of 'Somebody Prayed for Me' to the Americana version of 'Never Grow Old' and a German version of 'Everybody Wanna Go to Heaven'.  'HiGHWAY TO HEAVEN' is a lively, genre-defying gospel-rock-pop album, full of joy, spirituality, and Nina Hagen's unmistakable personality.

Personal Jesus - 15th Anniversary Edition

When Nina Hagen does something, she does it with full conviction. And when she released 'Personal Jesus' in 2010, she surprised us with an album that dives uncompromisingly into the world of gospel. Since her return to the Christian faith, she has expressed her religious devotion in 'Personal Jesus' by combining gospel with a mixture of blues, rock, soul and funk - powerful, passionate and without irony.

Her version of 'Personal Jesus' (originally by Depeche Mode) in particular attracted attention: where the original remains cool and minimalist, Hagen turned it into a moving gospel anthem full of spiritual ecstasy.

Now, 15 years later, 'Personal Jesus' is being released on vinyl for the first time - as an anniversary edition on colored vinyl. As a special highlight, this edition contains the previously unreleased bonus track 'I Was Born to Preach the  Gospel', which is the first track on the b side of the vinyl and fits seamlessly into the album as if it had always been part of it.

      We Are Scientists

      Qualifying Miles

In an industry where bands routinely burst onto the scene with meteoric intensity only to fade just as quickly, We Are Scientists have quietly crafted one of alternative rock's most remarkable sustained careers. For over two decades, the New York-based outfit — comprising founding members Keith Murray and Chris Cain — has consistently delivered sharp, infectious indie rock, maintaining the rare ability to evolve without losing their essential DNA. Now, with their ninth studio album, 'Qualifying Miles', the band continues to defy expectations, this time by looking back even as they push forward.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Throbbing, neon synthpop chords and huge vocal melodies come together into an endlessly dynamic mix of 80's indebted songwriting and a good measure of playful silliness. A hugely on-brand and riotously fun mix of talent and personality.

        NEU!

NEU! 75 - Picture Disc Edition

Rother and Dinger with their third (and for many years) their last studio work together. The insistent rhythms and the phased guitar and drums are as timeless as ever and in this new, official remastered edition the music seems as vital as it did when it came out all those years ago. This is probably their finest album, essential stuff!!

Groenland Records are proud to announce that, in May 2024, they will be releasing a document of a unique – if until now little-known – performance given by BRIAN ENO, HOLGER CZUKAY & J.PETER SCHWALM, in which they were accompanied by Raoul Walton and Jern Atai, members of Schwalm’s group, Slop Shop. Billed as a “High-Altitude-Food-Performance with Incidental Music by Slop Shop and Brian Eno”, with Can co-founder Czukay’s appearance kept under wraps in advance, it was recorded on August 27, 1998 outside the Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland – the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany – in Bonn, Germany, at the opening party for an exhibition of Eno’s Future Light-Lounge Proposal multimedia installation.

A Tribute To NEU! (RSD24 EDITION)

THIS IS A RECORD STORE DAY 2024 EXCLUSIVE.

Their influence is widespread, international, continued. NEU! paved the road ahead, created a model of forward propulsion away from hidebound rock cliches. Which is why the NEU! Tribute volume is so especially appropriate. They show how much there is for subsequent generations to unpack in NEU!, how much is buried, implied in their sound.

And so, The National pull back and reveal the latent colours, rhythmic potentials and mental freeways of ‘Im Gluck’. Fink honours the beautiful, lapping waterscape of ‘Weissensee’. Mogwai and Man Man acknowledge the road much travelled laid by ‘Super’. Alexis Taylor’s ‘4+1 = 5’, enhances Rother´s melancholia on ‘Wave Mother’ while Stephen Morris and Gabe Gurnsey’s remix of ‘Hallogallo’ is acid-tipped, machinic, dripping with robot sweat. Yann Tiersen’s remix of ‘Lieber Honig’ plunges deep down into the waters atop which it originally floated, Idles tear up ‘Negativland’ inside out, exposes and rearranges its tangled wires and workings. Finally Guerilla Toss’s ‘Zum Herz’ and They Hate Change’s version of ‘After Eight’ are salutes from a band whose members were unborn in NEU!’s heyday. NEU!, für immer. NEU! forever.
