STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Some of the more propulsive pieces on Grimes' latest outing could easily have been on Art Angels or Visions, being wrapped in the same optimistic bounce that we've become used to, but the majority of the LP is a much more measured and sombre affair, rich with dark, trappy beats and (understandably), politically charged vitriol. A brilliant development for Grimes, and a great listen.

Rachel Grimes

The Way Forth

The expansive new album Rachel Grimes, the renowned modern composer and cofounder of iconic chamber-rock group, Rachel’s. A rich, sprawling folk opera that explores the controversial history of Kentucky’s overlooked figures. The Way Forth, a new folk opera from Rachel Grimes, encompasses lush layers of voices and orchestrations in an experiential, non-linear investigation highlighting perspectives of Kentucky women from 1775 to today. Inspired by a treasure-trove of family documents, photos, and letters spanning several generations, Grimes began in 2016 to research some of the more vexing questions that came to the surface about these people, places, and events.

The songs that make up The Way Forth weave back in time through a postcard, a personal account of a long life on a farm, traces of folk tunes, names, places, and rivers, all woven into an emotional fabric of yearning, nostalgia, grief, and the rich intimacies of everyday life. Initially solo voices are heard above vivid orchestrations, expanding with the choral voices of the community through fragments of traditional church music and popular tunes. The scope widens to include a modern male narrator's reflections on a place battered by greed, civil war, bigotry, and the exploitation of natural resources. Through music, voice, and film, The Way Forth honors the emotional legacy of the silenced, the holistic, the beauty in quotidian life, and explores the eternal grace and redemption of time, as symbolized by the great Dix and Kentucky Rivers

    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: An honest and tender look at rural history and locality as well as the place of arts and creativity within society, all presented through Grimes' singular musical vision. Any fans of Rachel's tender chamber classical (myself included) will find a lot to enjoy here, while being comfortingly different from anything that's come before.

    Halfaxa - Arbutus Edition

Claire Boucher speaks a different language. And Halfaxa, her second album, feels like the dictionary from which we might discern just where this being comes from. Halfaxa is simultaneously more human than Geidi Primes, and yet falls deeper into a hole of mystical obscurity. The lyrics, as throughout this album, are designed to be an additional instrument, and not necessarily a device that gives obvious meaning to the proceedings. There is a strong focus on primeval and simplistic percussion to Boucher’s music, though I am apprehensive to compare it directly to club music. Even with all the fog and barriers she presents us with, at the core of her music is the human heart. There is a heartbeat in every note. Her breath is often used as a percussive element. Somehow, Grimes says more about life through her methodology than through what she literally chooses to say. Like all great world music, her sound transcends language.

    Grimes

    Art Angels

As Marylin Manson once said, "This Is The New Shit"! Grimes is back in the house, beating up your speaker stack at her batshit best. Faced with the tricky decision of how to follow up her trend setting, hot cake-like selling breakout smash "Visions", the now LA-based musician took the obvious route of synth-baroque chamber music. Well at least on oddball opener "Laughing And Not Being Normal". From there we accelerate through the whole host of iPod-friendly pop, from country EDM, through baile funk and nu disco to chill out. But before you lose faith that the mighty Grimes has fallen in with the wrong crowd since her move to LA, all those mainstream tropes are perfectly subverted with a well judged post modern subtlety, while retaining all the hooks, riffs and melodies which makes pop, well, popular. Spanning over 14 tracks "Art Angels" features collaborations with Janelle Monáe and newcomer, Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes, but like all of her previous albums was written and recorded entirely as a solo endeavour. The new album features more live instrumentation than ever before with Grimes playing piano, guitar and violin and continuing her evolution as a musician and a producer for her most ambitious album to date.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Millie says: The pop sensation Grimes’new album was an instant hit, her electro style remains but comes back with even more pop-power (which I didn’t think was even possible!) It has a feisty cartoon anime vibe, extravagant reverb and dreamlike lyrics for her angelic vocals.

4AD release ‘Visions’, the defining new album from Grimes.

For those unaware, Grimes is the inventive work of Claire Boucher, a project that has gained notoriety since its inception back in early 2010. Moving to Montreal from Vancouver in 2006, she developed Grimes among the city’s burgeoning DIY scene; a scene where both punk ethos and pop music collide, resulting in a distinct sense of community, religiosity and psychedelic revelry.

‘Visions’ will be her fourth release in less than two years. With her creative bent being both musical and visual, her second self embodies the arts of 2D, performance, dance, video and sound, weaving them all together to strong rhythmic effect. Subsequent records have sharpened her production skills and each one has tackled different influences and styles. This new set incorporates influences as wide as Enya, TLC and Aphex Twin, whilst drawing from genres like new jack swing, IDM, new age, K-pop, industrial and glitch, resulting in a record that is both otherworldly and futuristic.

Claire describes her work as “the only means through which I can be fully expressive. It is both an ethereal escape from, and a violent embrace of, my experience. The creative process is a quest for the ultimate sensual, mystical and cathartic experience and the vehicle for my psychic purging. ‘Visions’ was conceived in a period of self-imposed cloistering during which time I did not see daylight.”
