Colorama

Chaos Wonderland

Listening to ‘Chaos Wonderland’ means above all the verification of Colorama being a safe bet. But also, it means that Carwyn is open to what he listens to, and the influence of those who surround him. It is impossible not to figure out details that recall Muscle Shoalsbased white soul, Miami’s Criteria Studios (‘Shawn Lee helped me make more soul material without being aware of it’, Carwyn says), even sweet soft-rock from the seventies. Classic pop, without any doubt, to which the Colorama trademark – with its expansive production, its open-mindness and its fake feeling of simplicity and fragility – ends up depriving of any trace of expiry date to turn it into timelessness.

    Kelley Stoltz

    My Regime

Kelley Stoltz enters his 20th year in the record business with the release of his 10th full length album, “My Regime”. This will be his second release for the Spanish label Banana & Louie after prior albums on Castleface, Third Man Records and Sub Pop. A longtime DIY home recording multi instrumentalist, Stoltz again engineers, mixes and plays all the instruments on the album and his unique brand of “60’s/80’s” pop, garage-rock and folk sounds seem to have gotten better with age.

“My Regime” was recorded during an emotional year that saw him get engaged to marry, his father pass away and his tenure as rhythm guitarist with longtime heroes Echo & the Bunnymen come to and end. Jovial and reflective moods ensued and were put to tape by Stoltz in his Electric Duck Studios at home in San Francisco. The first single “Turning Into You” ponders the delight and soul connections of love, while “2020” asks “have you got what you need to ride it out… I wish I could see peace in 2020”, in reference to the chaotic politics at home. “Fire on Fire” written with his Dad on his mind, and is a big beat slow burner reminiscent of the Church’s “Starfish” years.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Slowly wandering missives, phased guitar and Stoltz' reverbed vocal beautifully riding atop the swooning backdrop, 'My Regime' once again steps things up from last years' 'Natural Causes'. Lovely.

      Cookie Zoo

For the last decade, and almost secretly, Carwyn Ellis records have meant the greatest news for people who love pop with no labels, nor affiliations. People who, after a record-hunting afternoon, enthusiasticly arrives back home with findings like Françoise Hardy LPs from the Vogue era, Arthur Verocai, Broadcast reissues, an Alessandro Alessandroni soundtrack, Meic Stevens' "Outlander" and an original, mint condition, O'Jays' "Back Stabbers" LP.

Ellis has proved to be plenty of tools and talent to sum up, in forty minutes, all the magic of the best pop music recorded in the last fifty years, very well absorved and excitingly mixed, and steeped by a magic and pastoral halo from his native Wales.

Before Edwyn Collins decided that Carwyn had received much less attenction than what he deserved, and supported in his label AED two wonderful records like "Good Music" (2012) and "Temari" (2014), Ellis had already recorded the "Magic Lantern Show" EP (2009), the acclaimed by Shindig magazine, "Box" (2010); and this first album, "Cookie Zoo" (2008).
A debut, after his thirties, where we can find all his personal universe. "Cookie Zoo" is linked to "Dere Mewn", one of the most beautiful songs recorded in the United Kingdom in the last decade. An unique flower living in a botanical garden, filled with brilliant songs of all possible colours.

Laura says: I can't believe it's 10 years since this album came out. I remember trying to track down a vinyl copy, after buying "Sound" on 7" (still one of my favourite singles of all time). At the time it was only available in Japan and out of my price range, so I'm delighted to finally get my hands on it. It's a gem of a record: gentle, intricate, melodic pop. Perfect!
