Alan Vega

Jukebox Babe B/w Speedway (RSD22 EDITION)

THIS IS A RECORD STORE DAY 2022 EXCLUSIVE, LIMITED TO ONE PER PERSON.

The visual artist, musician, and poet Alan Vega was born in Brooklyn in 1938. He co-founded the massively influential avant-garde band Suicide with Martin Rev in 1970, with whom he performed off and on throughout his life. Suicideís debut album was included among Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and it was a formative work in the invention of synth-punk, post-punk, art rock, industrial music, and more. Vega would go on to have a prolific career as a solo artist.

His hit song "Jukebox Babe" led to a contract with Elektra Records, who released two albums including the cult classic Saturn Strip, produced by Ric Ocasek. He began working with Liz Lamere, whom he later married and became the most crucial collaborator of his solo career. Lamere, along with fellow Vega collaborator Jared Artaud (The Vacant Lots) teamed up with creative director Michael Handis and Brooklyn label Sacred Bones to start opening up the Vega Vault of unreleased material and also to start bringing iconic releases such as Jukebox Babe back into print.

Jukebox Babe b/w Speedway (First Mix) is the first re-issue of Vega's greatest hit since it's initial pressing in 1981. Lamere recalls "Jukebox Babe" was one of Alan's most beloved songs. He had been thinking about experimenting with developing a blues-infused rockabilly sound outside of Suicide. The song went on to become a hit in France and sparked the flame that eventually resulted in launching Vega's solo career.

This new 7" is backed with the very first version Vega recorded of his fan favorite track "Speedway" off his Self Titled album. This version has never been released and is another crucial discovery from the vault. Artaud remarks Liz & I discovered this version of "Speedway" while doing some digging in the Vega Vault. We thought it would be a killer combo to have it juxtaposed with "Jukebox". Gasoline and cocaine.

    Invasion / Murder One

One of Alan Vega’s greatest talents was his ability to bring the past and the future together into a suspended place of timelessness. His groundbreaking duo Suicide was often seen as future primitivism and most of his musical output has exemplified this blending of the primordial human condition and visionary thinking. With Invasion b/w Murder One, the next release from the now infamous Vega Vault following 2021’s Mutator, we see this innate power in full effect.

The two tracks “Invasion” and “Murder One” were recorded two decades apart from one another in New York City. “Invasion” was recorded toward the end of the 2012-2015 studio sessions for the posthumous album IT and was one of his last recordings, while “Murder One” was recorded in 1997-1998, (after the Mutator sessions) and is part of a cluster of material that was recorded but never mixed prior to the sessions for his album 2007, released in 1999. Pairing these two songs together as a release illustrates the timelessness of the 30 plus years of unreleased material that he deemed the Vega Vault.

This release continues the collaboration of Mutator’s mixing and producing team, Liz Lamere and Jared Artaud. Liz provides a bridge to the past, having performed throughout the recording process of “Murder One” and “Invasion” while Jared opens a bridge to the future having been chosen by Alan himself to carry the torch and ensure the vision stays intact. Alan trusted no one more than Liz and Jared, and gave his blessing and encouragement to continue releasing material from the Vault. As Alan stated in the song “Vision” from IT, “If you destroy the vision, you will suffer the whirlwind.”

Listening to the various tracks during these mixing sessions brought up vivid recollections of how the sounds (such as the haunting voices in “Murder One”) were created and the constant experimentation that was involved, memories that informed Liz’s approach in the mixing process. Together with Jared’s technical skills, intuition, and deep understanding of the feeling these sounds were intended to evoke, the two were able to preserve the authenticity of the recordings while enhancing the quality of sound so the listener can fully experience the nuances of these unique auditory creations.

      After Dark

2021 is shaping up to be the year of Alan Vega. Every year should be but, this year is definitely it. The announcement of the opening of the Alan Vega archives which will be unleashing an untold amount of unreleased material dating back to 1971 via Sacred Bones, the release of Mutator (a lost album from the mid ’90s), which has gained rave reviews, a massive feature in the NY Times…Vega has been celebrated everywhere of late.

In The Red is over the moon to participate in this celebration with the release of After Dark—an album that captures a late night rock ’n’ roll session with Vega backed by Ben Vaughn, Palmyra Delran and Barb Dwyer (all members of the incredible Pink Slip Daddy as well as countless other cool projects). This album serves as a reminder that Alan Vega was an incredible rock ’n’ roll / blue / rockabilly vocalist. He was one of the best.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: 'After Dark' sees the Suicide frontman's unreleased session with members of Pink Slip Daddy, and veers between droning guitars and driving percussion and the near-legendary vocal vitriol of Vega. It's a wonderful release filled with exactly what we'd expect from this much beloved and sorely missed musical icon.
