The Set Up

The Delines were finishing the 'Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom' sessions when Willy brought in a tune called 'Walking With His Sleeves Down'. Amy learned it on piano and recorded it live. Her take was stunning but the song didn’t quite fit the record so they set it aside along with 'The Reckless Life', 'Dilaudid Diane' (featured in their recent encores) and 'Jumping off in Madras'. The song worked sonically but again didn’t feel quite right lyrically and when they finished the record Willy couldn’t stop writing songs for it. The US opioid epidemic with thousands of young people rattled with addiction and living in tents and on the streets and in old cars and RVs, influenced Luck and Doom but even more so with 'The Set Up'.

Their stalwart producer, John Morgan Askew, was at the helm again and he’s the king of building atmospheric worlds. You can really feel it on this one. By the time they finished, they realized 'The Set Up' was the wayward, misguided, and lonely sister to 'Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom'. More ragged and undone but all CinemaScope Delines.

Scenic Sessions - 10th Anniversary Reissue

      Willy Vlautin says:
“In the early summer of 2015, The Delines were still a young band with only one record, Coflax. Amy Boone, who lived in Austin, Texas at the time, flew up to Portland for some Summer shows and to cut a single for the Fall tour. We were thinking three songs at the most. The problem was I kept bringing in new tunes and our producer, John Morgan Askew, suddenly had time open up at his Scenic Burrows Studio. We decided to try something I’d never done before, record the songs as we were trying to figure them out. I brought in the best of the batch I was working on: Cool Your Jets, Gold Dreaming, Sirens at Night, and I’m Just a Ghost. We recorded them fast. We cut Gold Dreaming in two takes and I remember Amy singing I’m a Ghost in one and it just floored us all. Quickly our single turned into an EP. Then Amy brought in an acoustic demo of her tune, I Wasn’t Looking, and we recorded that.

I’ve a lways been a big fan of Sparklehorse so we tried Sunshine and then Cory brought in two instrumentals, Saloon Six and The Piano Player Always Drinks For Free. Suddenly we had a record. The band always thinks of this one as The Delines at summer camp. We recorded it during a minor heat wave, it’s loose and a bit rawer than most of our other records, and there’s a no pressure easy going feel to the session that really comes across. It’s a band favorite, too, because while recording it I think we all knew we were becoming a real band.

      Sea Drift - 2025 Repress

The third album proper for 'Country-got-Soul's finest, The Delines, on Decor Records sees them exploring the US Gulf Coast, not far from where Amy Boone grew up. The songs in this cinematic opus all focus around this area and are inspired by when Amy asked Willy Vlautin to write her a song like Tony Joe White's 'Rainy Night In Georgia' after her tragic accident being hit by a car in 2016 and her 3 year recovery. This follows on from 2019's The Imperial which was number one in the UK official AMA charts for two weeks. Written and partially recorded before lock down the rest of the album was finished last Summer, produced by John Morgan Askew at his Bocce studios just outside of Portland, Oregon.

The album features the classic line-up of the band with Amy Boone (vocals), Willy Vlautin (guitars, vocals, songwriting), Freddy Trujillo (bass), Sean Oldham (drums, vocals) and Cory Gray (keyboards, trumpet and arrangements) doing some of their finest work yet.

        The Imperial - 2025 Repress

Where debut album 'Colfax' was an experiment, 'The Imperial' is the result of a year of touring, the solidification of the line up, and months of rehearsals. Recorded in Portland, Oregon and produced by John Morgan Askew, The Imperial shows us again why songwriter, Willy Vlautin became so enamored with Amy Boone's voice. The combination of Vlautin's songs and Boone's voice creates a late night country soul world full of hopefulness and heartbreak.

          The Delines

          Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom

The Delines fourth record, came from a night in Dublin, Ireland, when singer Amy Boone asked Willy Vlautin to write a romantic tune. It’s the story of two ragged misfits: a failed criminal and a depressive house cleaner who somehow hit the lottery in meeting each other. With that song the soul of the record was found: ragged couples on the run. Recording began at Bocce Studios with longtime collaborator John Morgan Askew. The record features Amy Boone’s lush, world worn voice, the cinematic production skills of Askew, and the horn and string arrangement of Delines keyboardist and trumpeter, Cory Gray. This is wide screen, CinemaScope, Delines at their best.

'Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom' is the Delines most realized and strongest album to date, a record of romantic misfits and grifters who live out of suitcases and cars, who can’t seem to settle down, who hope that in the next town or city will be the score that saves them. 'Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom' features the stalwart Delines line up: Amy Boone on vocals, Cory Gray on horns and keyboards, Sean Oldham on drums, Freddy Trujillo on bass, and Willy Vlautin on guitar.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A swooning collection of drifting, soulful country rock and perfectly performed loungey jazz business. Brilliantly uplifting at points, but heartfelt and mournful in others, a beautiful modern interpretation of classic soul.

            The Delines

            Colfax - 2022 Reissue

The Delines debut album, repressed on black vinyl.

The debut album from The Delines, Colfax is a stunning & timeless collection of songs with the intimacy of a midnight confessional. Like a beat-up Dusty Springfield after too many long nights working a dreary after-hours bar, Colfax has the skid row heart of Tom Waits, the street-tough weariness of early Rickie Lee Jones, and the cool, laid back sound of Mazzy Star.

                The Delines

                The Imperial

Led by vocalist Amy Boone (The Damnations, TX), Cory Gray on keyboards, & horns, Tucker Jackson (The Minus 5) on pedal steel, as well as former Richmond Fontaine members: Sean Oldham, Freddie Trujillo, and Willy Vlautin. Vlautin, the acclaimed novelist and songwriter for Richmond Fontaine, has penned all ten tracks. Richmond Fontaine broke up in 2016 after touring Europe over 25 times and selling over 45,000 records. Décor will be putting out two singles before the album in January.

The Delines debut album, Colfax, surprised fans and critics alike. The band had only been together a week when they went into the studio and cut the record. Uncut gave it 9/10 stars and praised its "widescreen romanticism", calling it "the richest collection of songs Willy Vlautin has written." Evoking the feel of a beat up Dusty Springfield or a weary Rickie Lee Jones, Colfax made a dozen top ten records of the year lists and the Delines sold out venues in the UK & Ireland. The Guardian declared them the surprise hit of End of The Road Festival and they toured Europe three times off the LP. The Delines were in the midst of working on the follow up to 'Colfax; when singer, Amy Boone, was hit by a car while walking on a sidewalk in Austin, Texas. Both her legs were broken, she was hospitalized for months, and went on to have eight major surgeries. The band stopped completely and waited and hoped for her recovery. Now five years later, Amy is finally on the mend and The Delines are back with their sophomore effort, The Imperial.

Where Colfax was an experiment, The Imperial is the result of a year of touring, the solidification of the line up, and months of rehearsals.
