Live Rope

Originally released in November 2024 as a physical only, limited edition physical boxset, Swans’ 'Live Rope' is now available on CD at retail. A document of the band’s US/EU 2023-24 live tours, this material laid the blueprint for the band’s most recent studio album, Birthing, released May 2025. Spanning almost 3 hours of trance-inducing melodies that morph into dense walls of sound, the album is anchored by Gira’s unmistakable vocals and crafted with longtime collaborators on lap steel, bass, Mellotron and dynamic percussion. Gira proclaims the album was forged” with soul-lacerating commitment and relentless pursuit of our own truth through sound…”

The Wild Swans

Bringing Home The Ashes - Reissue

The debut LP from Liverpool band the Wild Swans finally gets a re-release. Originally released in 1988, it's an absolutely beautiful record full of jangling guitars and pounding drums, topped with Paul Simpson's melancholic vocals.

Despite being signed to Sire Records by Seymour Stein, they never received the same acclaim as some of their Liverpudlian contemporaries, which is a perplexing as this LP has all the hallmarks of Liverpool at that time along with some great songwriting. It's an album full of melancholy and hope and still sounds absolutely wonderful 30 odd years later.

STAFF COMMENTS

Andy says: Absolutely glorious record showcasing Liverpool legend Paul Simpson's brilliant song writing in tandem with that beautifully romantic Liverpool sound so redolent of the early 80's. Maybe the fact this debut wasn't released until 1988 was a reason for its perceived "failure". All irrelevant now; this is a wonderful record.

Swans

Birthing

Swans return with 'Birthing', the latest album, developed over the course of a yearlong 2023–2024 tour.

'Birthing' is released via Mute and Young God Records. The initial pressings of the deluxe vinyl and CD include a bonus DVD featuring Swans Live 2024 '(Rope) The Beggar', a concert film by Marco Porsia documenting the band's most recent US tour. The DVD also includes 'I Wonder If I’m Singing What You’re Thinking Me To Sing', a documentary by Christopher Nicholson following Michael Gira’s 2022 solo tour.

Refined through relentless improvisation and live performance, as well as newly composed studio pieces, 'Birthing' is a testament to Michael Gira’s uncompromising sonic vision. Beginning as skeletal acoustic compositions, the songs were gradually expanded and transformed in the studio with longtime live members and collaborators.

“This album, coupled with the recent live release, 'Live Rope', constitutes my final foray (as producer / impresario) into the all-consuming sound worlds that have been my obsession for years. We’ll do a final tour in this mode towards the end of 2025, then that’s it. After that, Swans will continue, so long as I’m able, but in a significantly pared down form. Hints of that direction can be found in a few moments on the current album. In the meantime, my hope is that the music provides a positive and fertile atmosphere in which to dream.” – Michael Gira / Swans

Produced by Gira, 'Birthing' was recorded at Soundfabrik Berlin, mixed at Candy Bomber Studio by Ingo Krauss, and mastered by Doug Henderson at Micro-Moose.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A perfect continuation of 2023's epic 'The Beggar', 'Birthing' sees Gira and Co drift through a raft of sonically expansive, emotionally weighty pre-post-rock gloomers. A perfect distillation of the modern sound of Swans.

Swansea Sound

Oasis V Blur/Pacio’r Fan

2025 is a special Britpop anniversary year, and Swansea Sound are keen to celebrate this summer’s coming together of every single music-lover in the UK with the release of their new single 'Oasis v Blur'.

The song probably sounds more like The Fall getting into bed with The Sweet, but that’s just the way it turned out.

The B side, 'Pacio’r Fan', is about a journey back to a remembered teenage time, when idealism still burned and the world was full of potential. It is a wistful song, but it’s hopeful too: the idealistic flame is still there if you seek it out.

Odetta Hartman

Swansongs

Self-described as "cowboy soul, future folk", NYC/DC artist Odetta Hartman’s sound is both traditional and modern; that modernity often featuring through the spacey and fragmented production of her partner Jack Inslee.

'Swansongs' is a dynamic and powerful reflection of love andambition, hopeful, energetic and at times chaotic but always captivating.Following her debut mini-LP '222' and 'Old Rockhounds Never Die', which saw her touring herunique performance style, part Jack White rock and roll folk blues, part electronicexperimentations, with the likes of Let's Eat Grandma, Cosmo Sheldrake and Skullcrusher, shereturns with her strongest set of songs to date - another fever dream of a record including theexperimental pop of 'Goldilocks', the dramatic string lead 'Dr. No.'

Paul Simpson

Revolutionary Spirit : A Post-Punk Exorcism: The Teardrop Explodes, Care, The Wild Swans, And Beyond

Part memoir, part social history, Revolutionary Spirit is the poignant, often hilarious story of a cult Liverpool musician s scenic route to fame and artistic validation. If Morrissey was the Oscar Wilde of the 1980s indie scene, Simpson was its William Blake, a self-destructive genius so lost in mystical visions of a new arcadia that he couldn t meet the rent. Simpson s career begins alongside fellow Liverpool luminaries Julian Cope, Ian McCulloch, Bill Drummond, Ian Broudie, Will Sergeant, Pete Wylie, Pete Burns, and Pete de Freitas at the infamous Eric s club, where, in 1976, he finds himself at the birth of the city s second great musical explosion.

Along the way, he co-founds and christens the neo-psychedelic pop group The Teardrop Explodes, shares a flat with a teenage Courtney Love, and forms The Wild Swans, the indie band of choice for literary-minded teens in the early 1980s, who burn bright and brief, in the process recording one of the all-time great cult hit singles, Revolutionary Spirit . Marriage, fatherhood, and tropical illness follow, interspersed with artistic collaborations with Bill Drummond and members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others. Following an onstage reunion with Cope at the Royal Festival Hall, Simpson discovers that seven thousand miles away, in the Philippines, he is considered a musical god.

Presidential suites, armed guards, police escorts . . .

you couldn t make it up, and, incredibly, he doesn t need to. Revolutionary Spirit marks the arrival of an original literary voice. It is the story of a musician driven by an unerring belief that artistic integrity will bring its own rewards, and an elliptical elegy to the ways it does.

Trampolene

Swansea To Hornsey - Anniversary Edition

Due to unprecedented demand TRAMPOLENE (the Welsh group, not the bouncy thing spelled with an ‘i’!) will re-release their classic debut album ‘Swansea To Hornsey’ (Anniversary Edition)  through Strap Originals.

On the same day singer, guitar slinger and lead Tramp, Jack Jones, will publish his first novel, also entitled ‘Swansea To Hornsey’. Says Jack Jones: “The album and the book is ‘Swansea To Hornsey’ as it should have been. We couldn’t find anyone to publish the book the first time round. I always wanted to give fans the ultimate experience of listening to the album & reading my book. I was gob smacked when Peter (Doherty) said he loved the book so much he was gonna start a publishing company and put my book into the world…not something you hear every day. We edited it together as we drove across Europe…getting to know each other even deeper. It was a magical time, and now this all feels like a surreal dream. The album has been going for silly money on eBay & fans are always asking for it to be re-pressed…so we thought f**k it, let’s make it happen.”

Feel Good Now

Swans’ second live album Feel Good Now is available on vinyl for the first time since its original limited edition release in 1988, via Mute / Young God Records.

Feel Good Now is a collection of live recordings from their 1987 European tour, recorded by the band's sound engineer on a Sony Professional Walkman, with many of the tracks being from their album Children of God, which was released the same year.

This follows the re-release of their first live album Public Castration Is a Good Idea and their brand new album The Beggar, released in June 2023. Led by Michael Gira, Swans formed in 1982 and have produced a series of diverse albums both before their disbandment in 1997 and after their reformation in 2010. During this time Swans have made their mark as masters of their craft and are an influential band for countless experimental and post-rock acts.

Swansea Sound

Twentieth Century

Second Album ‘Twentieth Century’ From Indie Agitators Swansea Sound.

On their second album, Swansea Sound present a set of songs as infectious as anything from their previous incarnations. The raw energy of Hue’s old band The Pooh Sticks is still there; the indiepop sugar rush of Amelia’s Heavenly is still as sweet as ever. But these songs are laced with venom and sardonic wit.

Swansea Sound have visited this terrain before: their catchy debut single ‘Corporate Indie Band’ was a sly tribute to a music scene that had lost all its authenticity, with its bands in hock to social media managers: corporate puppets play-acting at independence. In ‘Twentieth Century’, Swansea Sound take it a lot further, having a good look at the heroes of their youth – the fabled eras of rock, punk, post-punk, electro futurism – and considering whether the prophets that emerged from those scenes were of any use whatsoever.

In ‘Paradise’, the electric synth-bleeps conjure up the dated futurism of the 1980s – with all its optimism about a digital nirvana: a nirvana that turned out to consist of Cambridge Analytica, OnlyFans, Spotify and chatrooms populated with incels. The song is as catchy as hell, and might remind you of Magazine. (Swansea Sound don’t think that the Twentieth Century was all bad.) ‘Twentieth Century’, the title track, plays out the egotism of a punk rocker in combat gear, armed with a decent major label deal, singing (with less and less conviction) about revolution: OK, that was grim. But ‘Far Far Away’ is a pretty straightforward love song to Pete Shelley. He was great.

Other tracks turn their attention to the Twenty First Century: ‘Markin’ It Down’ is a duet between Hue, a vinyl obsessive, and Amelia, the owner of a second-hand record shop, with him searching for bargains amidst the over-supply of Yard Act albums, and her trying to suggest something older that might excite him. ‘Click It And Pay’ is a duet between a harassed home-worker doing some online shopping and the woman in the fulfilment warehouse who’s under pressure to pack his requisites. ‘I Don’t Like Men In Uniform’ (inspired by Hue’s ageing Yorkshire Terrier Kenny – once a fierce beast, now just grouchy), is about those blokes who used to be aggressive enough to fight anyone, but can’t quite find the energy for a scrap these days. Punk’s nearly dead.

Final track ‘Pack The Van’ is a surprisingly elegiac pop song, looking right back to early teenage years, wondering if it’s still possible to access the undiluted idealism and excitement of youth. And decides that, yes, that isn’t out of the question...

All these songs are indiepop, if you insist. They are full of earworms and they will make you want to dance. But they are also full of funny, complex, mordant ideas - and maybe that’s why you’ll want to hear them many times over.

Swans

The Beggar

Swans present their sixteenth studio album The Beggar.

The Beggar was written and produced by founding member Michael Gira and features contributions from recent and former Swans members, members of Angels Of Light, as well as guest Swan Ben Frost.

Following 2019’s leaving meaning, the album emerged from the 2020 lockdown with Micheal explaining, “after numerous pandemic-induced cancellations of tours for the previous Swans album leaving meaning, and an apparent bottomless pit of waiting, waiting, waiting, and the strange disorientation that came with this sudden but interminable forced isolation I decided it was time to write songs for a new Swans album and forget about everything else. They came relatively easily, always informed by the suspicion that these could be my last. When I finally was able to travel, songs in hand, to Berlin to work with my friends recording this record, the feeling was akin to the moment in The Wizard of Oz when the film changes from Black and White to Color. Now I’m feeling quite optimistic. My favourite color is pink. I hope you enjoy the album.”

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: There are few bands more incendiary than Swans, and 'The Beggar' has been a hotly anticipated arrival in the shop for me especially. The atmospheric gloom and soaring heft of Gira & Co's previous LP's is as present as ever, but lightened with a (dare I say it?) more song-based structure to a few of the pieces. It's classic swans, but it's also a perfect sidestep for one of the most visceral bands in the game.

Swansea Sound

Live At The Rum Puncheon

Swansea Sound started in the middle of lockdown. They realised that fast, loud, joyous, angry indiepop punk was the answer to being stuck indoors. Who needs introspection?

Hue Williams is reunited with Pooh Sticks partner Amelia Fletcher (ex- Talulah Gosh, Heavenly). Rob Pursey (also ex-Heavenly) and Ian Button (Wreckless Eric’s live collaborator) provide the noise. Swansea Sound are the fast, acerbic and joyous past, present and future of indie.

Four of the tracks were released as singles, all of them now impossible to obtain. ‘Corporate Indie Band’ was a limited edition cassette, ‘I Sold My Soul on eBay’ was a one-off lathe cut that got auctioned on eBay (with a £400 winning bid), ‘Indies of the World’ was a 7” inch single that briefly hit the UK physical charts, but immediately sold out and plummeted back out again. And then there was ‘Swansea Sound’: a requiem for a lost radio station; an anti-corporate lament - another limited edition cassette single.

First track Rock N Roll Void gives a three minute revision session, just in case you’ve forgotten about The Ramones, The Kinks, The Buzzcocks and the brief explosion of indie noise pollution of 1986. Some of the songs are reflexive – ‘Swansea Sound’ and ‘The Pooh Sticks’. (Who else was going to write a tribute to The Pooh Sticks?) Others are searching for hope in the digital desert – ‘Let It Happen’, ‘I’m OK When You’re Around’, ‘Pasadena’, ‘Angry Girl’. ‘Je Ne Sais Quoi’ is pure pop throwaway fun. The others songs are dead catchy too, they just happen to express a sickness and a contempt for the state of things. ‘Corporate Indie Band’ is about a group who have mortgaged their creativity to a major label and sold their identities to an online marketing team of public schoolboys. Freedom of Speech takes a look at three contemporary ‘alternative’ music stars and considers how they’ve responded to BLM, the pandemic and the rise of right-wing populism. ‘Like self-serving arseholes’, is the unfortunate answer. (You won’t struggle to work out who the three ‘alternative’ stars are.)

Swansea Sound took their name from a well-loved local radio station when it was given a corporate makeover in 2020. They even used the radio station’s abandoned logo. Like the indiepunk pop songs, something modern acidic and angry has taken up residence in a familiar, borrowed frame. You can throw yourself around to Swansea Sound like it’s 1986, but if you catch the lyrics you’ll remember you’re in 2021. (Sorry about that.)

Swans

Leaving Meaning.

'Leaving meaning.' is the band’s fifteenth studio album, the follow up to 2016’s 'The Glowing Man'. Written and produced by Michael Gira, the album features contributions from recent and former Swans, members of Angels of Light as well as Anna and Maria von Hausswolff, Ben Frost, The Necks, Baby Dee and Jennifer Gira.

Michael Gira explains, “leaving meaning. is the first Swans album to be released since I dissolved the lineup of musicians that constituted Swans from 2010 – 2017. Swans is now comprised of a revolving cast of musicians, selected for both their musical and personal character, chosen according to what I intuit best suits the atmosphere in which I’d like to see the songs I’ve written presented. In collaboration with me, the musicians, through their personality, skill and taste, contribute greatly to the arrangement of the material. They’re all people whose work I admire and whose company I personally enjoy.”

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Michael Gira is a man who clearly can't quit (nor should he). Having given up on the band a number of times, in the midst smashing out some truly amazing albums, he always returns. This iteration of the band includes all the sounds we'd expect from Gira but bolstered by the perfectly selected cast of collaborators and co-conspirators.

Swans

The Great Annihilator

Swans present a remastered reissue of their ninth studio album, ‘The Great Annihilator’, on Mute.

‘The Great Annihilator’, originally released in 1995 and described at the time as “…a majestic symphony of haunting melodies and shifting moods” (SF Bay Guardian), will be released as a 2CD set, on double vinyl - the album’s first release on vinyl for decades - and as a digital download album. (Michael Gira’s ‘Drainland’ is also available as a standalone digital download album.)

The 2CD and double vinyl (in the form of a download code) formats will also feature ‘Drainland’, Michael Gira’s debut solo album recorded at the same time as ‘The Great Annihilator’.

The album was entirely remastered by Doug Henderson but only after Bill Rieflin (‘Honorary Swan Forever’) recently tracked down DATs and cassettes containing unmastered mixes from the sessions. Michael Gira describes the discovery as “a revelation of great sonic effect.” Talking about the recording, Gira said “I lived in a tent in a mosquito infested studio right next to Cabrini Green in Chicago for what (?) something like 3 months, rarely leaving. Band members and Jarboe and Bill Rieflin etc came and went, and somehow we crafted this thing into what it became.”

‘The Great Annihilator’ line up features Michael Gira, Jarboe, Bill Rieflin, Algis Kizys, Norman Westberg, Clinton Steele and Ted Parsons

The Swans

Love Of Life

Led by Michael Gira, Swans formed in 1982 and, after disbanding in 1997, returned with the critically acclaimed albums ‘My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky’ (2010), ‘The Seer’ (2012) and 2014’s ‘To Be Kind’.

Swans’ classic album ‘Love Of Life’ (1992) is now re-mastered and reissued as a deluxe vinyl edition with an exclusive poster and digital download code.

The digital download code for ‘Love Of Life’ also includes 18 bonus tracks.

Swans

The Seer

"The Seer took 30 years to make. It’s the culmination of every previous Swans album as well as any other music I’ve ever made, been involved in, or imagined. But it’s unfinished, like the songs themselves. It’s one frame in a reel. The frames blur, blend and will eventually fade.

The songs began on an acoustic guitar, then were fleshed out with (invaluable) help from my friends, then were further tortured and seduced in rehearsals, live, and in the studio, and now they await further cannibalism and force-feeding as we prepare to perform some of them live, at which point they’ll mutate further, endlessly, or perhaps be discarded for a while.

Despite what you might have heard or presumed, my quest is to spread light and joy through the world. My friends in Swans are all stellar men. Without them I’m a kitten, an infant. Our goal is the same: ecstasy!" - Michael Gira.

“For the last two years, one of the world’s most bellicose bands has paid respect to its legacy largely by leaving it alone and tried to expand it by testing its old limits … this is exactly the kind of forward-pointing roadmark Swans deserve.” —Pitchfork

“The Swans are currently the greatest rock band on the planet....” —The Quietus

“[Gira] is looking for beauty, pure and simple, unfettered by meaning or standard songwriting notions of emotional resonance.” —The Wire

Swans

My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky

After years of pursuing Angels of Light and recording and producing a diverse roster of artists for his Young God label, Michael Gira has reconvened his legendary group Swans. As he says: 'This is not a reunion. It's not some dumb-ass nostalgia act. It is not repeating the past. After five Angels of Light albums, I need a way to move forward, in a new direction, and it just so happens that revivifying the idea of Swans allows me to do that'.

This highly anticipated album is as powerful and diverse as anything Gira's ever done, in Swans or otherwise. It opens with the epic, soul-crushing "No Words / No Thoughts", but quickly veers to more pastoral terrain, and on to ever-ascending monotonal grooves. A filmic-folk idyll featuring Devendra Banhart on lead vocal abruptly shifts to cataclysm, and is followed by more airplane-taking-off ascensions, art songs and lethal sonic pummelling. In short, this is the new Swans album, a significant advance from where they left off and as challenging and emotionally demanding as ever.

STAFF COMMENTS

Darryl says: An album that encompasses all that is the Swans; from the brutal pummelling of your rib cage to the gentle caressing of your senses, this is the Swans on majestic top form. The swans are back, long live the Swans!

Sufjan Stevens

Seven Swans

THE PICCADILLY RECORDS ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2004

This is wonderful! Sufjan has created another stunning album, by blending pastoral folk songs, with a whole host of unusual instrumentation, including electric piano, xylophone and glockenspiel that at times are reminiscent of Philip Glass, occasional bursts of frantic but melodic banjo, and various brass and woodwind instruments and the whole thing is held together through out by some stunningly simple acoustic guitar and fragile, half whispered vocals.
