Calexico And Iron & Wine

In The Reins

Iron & Wine's Sam Beam and the members of Calexico convened in December 2004 at Calexico's home base of Wavelab Studios in Tucson, Arizona. The idea of working together had been tossed around for over three years, though neither bands' schedule loaned itself into making it a reality until then. The resulting session "In the Reins", is a mini-album that is a truly harmonious affair sure to satisfy fans of both bands. The seven tracks are Sam Beam originals and were fleshed out by the full Calexico band. The record also features newcomer Natalie Wyants on vocals, Salvador Duran, a local fixture of the Tucson Flamenco scene, on vocals and Botas. Of course no Wavelab experience would be complete without the appearance of Nick Luca (NL Trio/John Doe Band) and Craig Schumacher, both of whom contributed to the record in the form of engineering and performance.

Jose Gonzalez

In Our Nature

When José González became a household name across the world with the help of 250,000 coloured bouncing balls and a Sony Bravia television commercial featuring his spare and moving version of The Knife's song, "Heartbeats", it was the second time fame came calling and caused a truly remarkable phenomenon. While studying biochemistry at the university of Gothenburg, José's debut album "Veneer" was released in his Swedish homeland in 2003. It made him a national star. Featuring "Heartbeats" and ten other resonant, acoustic songs, "Veneer" turned José, a Gothenburg (via Argentina) native, into a Top Ten recording artist. This, his second album continues where "Veneer" left off. Another stunning collection of captivating songs.

"Volume One" introduces a boy and girl choir making music the old-fashioned way: by hand and with as few machines as humanly possible. The She & Him story begins when in 2006 when renowned one man band M. Ward, recorded a duet with a girl named Zooey Deschanel. A delightful recording session, the experience led to a dialogue between the two about collaborating further. This, in turn, led to Deschanel admitting to secretly making dozens of home demos and hoarding them like acorns for the winter. Realising that if songs were acorns then this was indeed her wintertime, Deschanel sent the recordings to Ward and the demos became the basis for their first record, entitled "Volume One". Aiming to achieve the warmth and charm of pop and country records from the early and mid twentieth century, Ward, who also produced the record, and Deschanel, who wrote most of the music, called upon the help of a number of extraordinary musicians including: Rachel Blumberg, Adam Selzer, Mike Coykendall, Tom Hagerman, Peter Broderick, Mike Mogis, and Paul Brainerd.

Dracula

The follow up to the well received debut album ‘Apples’ sees Nurses’ unmistakable elastic melodies, heady pop hooks and knack for catchy songwriting get right under your skin.

It’s a bolder, heavier, groovier, record. Mixed with Scott Colburn (whose production credits include Arcade Fire’s ‘Funeral’ and Animal Collective’s ‘Feels’) this is a three dimensional being, solidifying the band’s evolution from a bedroom recording experiment to a fully fleshed dynamic ensemble.

Ethernet

Opus 2

Developing on the trance-induction and brainwave entrainment techniques explored on the first Ethernet album 144 Pulsations Of Light, Opus 2 moves into deeper, more introspective and emotive territory.

A stronger focus on melody and harmonic structure results in pieces that almost approach, but never quite arrive at, traditional song forms, while still leaving much to the imagination of the listener, evading mental categorization and revealing new sonic experiences with each listen.

The bulk of recording took place during the darkest months of winter in the Pacific Northwest, between late-night shifts providing technical support for hospital operating rooms. The pieces on the album each formed gradually and spontaneously during extended improvised sonic meditations as part of the composer's own trancework (or self-hypnosis) practice, this in an effort to remove specific compositional intention from the process, instead just allowing them to "happen".

If 144 Pulsations... was about expansion of awareness and opening to the light that surrounds us, Opus 2 is intended to induce inner contemplation and internalized focus on the light within us. It is also a statement on the gradual darkening and inexorable decay of our modern world, and the need to look within to find true support and sustenance from one's own energetic source. Patience and perseverance.

Sound On Sound

Macho / Depression

After getting used to eclectic sounds but always rooted in disco music, boogie with some proto-house drift, at the stroke of a dozen reissues, Omaggio delights us with a two tracks new-wave masterpiece, released in the mid-'80s on Color Record, seminal Flemish label, first and only recording of the Sound On Sound project. The London Dirthole Company

Modern Ist EP

The giant avalanche that is THE LONDON DIRTHOLE COMPANY is back with another slab of prime-time partisan punk noise. With a Futurist disdain and Dadaist sense of sardonic humour, the MODERN IST EP celebrates the realities of the Family Of Noise as a truly interactive social experiment. The genuinely odd bunch of protagonists that make up the bands personnel stretch the boundaries of conventional group structure and methods. A truly outsider approach that reverberates with its nebulous intensity and spirit of joy. The result is a fractious cacophony created (on this record) by four drummers, 3 guitarists a bass player and 2 different vocalists. Live the band rotate up to a dozen singers if occasion and availability conspire. The music has elements and attitudes in common with The Monks, Velvet Underground, Pussy Galore and The Fall without any direct plagiarism or imitation. These bands are but ships in the night to the Battleship Dirthole and its crew of desperate fellows. PROFESSOR THE CONFESSOR is an intimate memoir of utterances from the dark recesses of The Professor’s mind. CRYING ONIONS is a sleazy ballad of all-consuming pleasure, timeless romance, sensual purgatory, erotic possession, empty tears, disrobing and eating an onion. TOMORROW, TODAY faces up to the bleak realities of a passion consumed and the vagaries of the staring up from the gutter as you watch your former partner dance the same dance you fell for with someone else. The strapping fit and healthy London Dirthole Company pedigree on this recording; The Nuns, Pulkas, Echobelly, Headbutt, Felix Moment Power Trio, Lot Lizards, Project Dark, Headcleaner.

French producer Yse Saint Laur'ant is exactly the sort of artist you want to hear from as the sun begins to shine more often. He's a master of escapist, beauty, classy grooves that marry disco and Balearic into pure magic. 'Space Ride' does that on a bubbly groove with a cosmic edge and 'Saint Tropez' brings loose-limbed funk and boho percussion to a Provencal sound. 'Monaco' is bathed in sunlight and made all the more classy with some gorgeous stings and mellifluous chord work, then 'Esplanade' shuts down with a dubby, flute-led sound with a whimsical charm.

Don Carlos Feat. Robert Owens

Inspired

Two seriously high-grade legends come together to mark the 30th anniversary of the cultured Seasons Limited imprint here: Don Carlos is behind one of Balearic house music's most enduring anthems in 'Alone' and Robert Owens has been voicing the genre since the 80s with his signature smoky tones. Here they cook up 'Inspired' in three different forms - there's a deep and soulful House Mix with an electric delivery from Owens, then a chord-laced and warm Classic Mix with a throwback Chicago bassline and finally a Dub Mix that strips everything back to a more breezy late-night sound that sinks you into the groove perfectly.

Soweto Soul Orchestra is produced and composed by Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, whose importance to South-Africa's music scene can hardly be underestimated. Being a formative member of The Beaters, which was later renamed Harari, he toured Africa extensively and even hit the American charts with their "Party" single. After Harari split in 1982, Sipho went solo and scored another hit with "Burn Out", which could be heard in every township, and produced and recorded for Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba among others.

The Soweto Soul Orchestra project boasts a variety of funky tracks, all marked with that jazzy South-African sound. The stand-out tune on this one, for us, is the epic 8 minute long cosmic disco cover of "Hang em High", the original soundtrack for the eponymous classic Western movie.

This 2020 re-issue sees all tracks cut again from the official studio files, ensuring both audio quality and originality.

Timothy J. Fairplay

Pathfinder Theme / UFOs Over China

Timothy J Fairplay is back on the label with a 7” single containing two tracks cut from a rock of uranium. “Pathfinder Theme” and “UFO’s Over China” might differ in sound and tempo but are connected by a radiant feeling. The two tracks bathes in a greenish/yellow bright toxic aura.

This plutonium charged music carries with it some quality elements known from his earlier repertoire like for example a primitive yet crisp beat working as foundation to a few but very exquisite synth sounds.

Timothy J. Fairplay stands on the shoulders of past Italian masters and the works of John Carpenter but with an accentuated alien feel. Something otherworldly, maybe good, maybe harmful, is hidden in the vibe on both sides of this 7”. The balance between good and evil is very even - yin/yang from outer space!

Wing!

MISSED IT JUST THE ONCE

wing!’s debut EP MISSED IT JUST THE ONCE is a ghostly instrumental hip hop project shaped by instinct, collaboration, and the constraints of a work lunch break - combining sample-based beat-making with live instrumentation.
Emerging from a period of creative exploration and personal transformation, MISSED IT JUST THE ONCE marks a pivotal moment for wing!, the moniker of Bexleyheath born-and-raised producer Adam Swan. “This EP was a breath of fresh air for me,” he shares. “It was the first time I had multiple tracks I was proud of. The idea of having an EP to listen back to and be excited about was completely new to me.”

Each track on the EP tells its own story, both in sound and in the moments of its creation. The first single "Out From Outer" was the first track written for the EP, and its original skeleton was conceived during wing!’s lunch break from working in a coffee shop - a habit that has been the basis of all of the tracks on the EP. “I was listening to a lot of Brazilian funk and thinking about how J Dilla layered samples on Geek Down,” he recalls. “I wanted it to feel like a live DJ endlessly flipping samples over a drum loop.”

The track served as the catalyst for the formation of wing!’s live band: after sending it to drummer Joe Killick, they had their first rehearsal and began transforming the music into a live experience, soon joined by bassist Kai Charlton. They made their debut at The Windmill Brixton in April 2024. As a trio playing live, they bridge the gap between beat-driven electronic & hip hop music and live jazz-inflected improvisation. Their blend of trip-hop textures with post-rock dynamics contributed to the EP’s final completion, with all three performing on the closing track.

Closing track In A Second I Will Need A Second’s post-rock inspired sound blends seamlessly with wing!’s more native hip-hop beatmaking. Drawing influence from the likes of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Butch Kassidy, the track's energy is built around a drum crescendo of epic proportions. Initially hesitant to incorporate live drums over the usual sampling, wing! ultimately embraced the organic energy it brought to their live and recorded sound. The track’s momentum is driven by drummer Joe Killick’s subtle dynamic shifts. Kai Charlton brings deeply melodic bass, resulting in a piece that feels immense while remaining introspective.

The EP came hot off the back of opening Green Man Festival’s iconic Mountain Stage after winning the Green Man Rising competition.

MISSED IT JUST THE ONCE is wing! planting his flag in the ground, and making their first definitive statement. Boom bap grooves melding seamlessly with trippy ambiance and propulsive composition. With ‘In A Second I Will Need a Second’ the trio close out their debut EP in an epic conclusion. wing! continue to move from strength-to-strength, and have cemented themselves as one to watch with this release. With Missed It Just The Once, wing! establishes himself as an artist unafraid to follow his instincts, experiment freely, and find creativity in unexpected places.

Garth

Special Part Of My Life / The Groove

US outfit Garth only left behind a small trail of records, but this obscure 1980 7" still carries the peculiar charm of disco's stranger back rooms. Recorded between New York and Los Angeles across the late 70s, 'Special Part Of My Life' opens in warm, soulful territory through Henrietta Pam Garth's soft vocal glide, before J. Albert Garth gradually enters the frame and pushes the track somewhere more feverish and floor-facing. There's a lovely looseness to it all: the groove is slightly frayed at the edges in that very particular pre-digital way. On the flip, 'The Groove' heads somewhere far murkier, featuring wiggling synth effects and huge hovering atmospherics drifting over the top of the beat that gives the whole thing this faintly eerie quality which, honestly, makes it all the better.

Inspiral Carpets

Burn Like The Sun

Inspiral Carpets' 'Burn Like The Sun' - their first studio album in 12 years. The album marks a major new chapter for Inspiral Carpets following a period shaped by loss, reflection and renewal. An extended hiatus left the future of the band uncertain, and the return to writing and recording became something deeper than simply making another record. What emerged is an album rooted in endurance, connection, and forward motion. At the centre of that story is the return of original frontman Stephen Holt, whose rejoining of the band reconnected Inspiral Carpets with their earliest creative identity while opening the door to an entirely new era. Rather than revisiting the past, the band approached 'Burn Like The Sun' determined to create something fresh, relevant and emotionally honest - a record that acknowledges their history without being defined by it.

Akira Yamaoka

Return To Silent Hill (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Room 318 Productions and Laced Records are stepping into the fog to bring Akira Yamaoka’s score for the 2026 motion picture, Return to Silent Hill, to vinyl.

This 2LP features 29 specially remastered tracks carefully curated by series composer and executive producer, Akira Yamaoka, to capture the key themes of love, loss, guilt and obsession from Return to Silent Hill and the SILENT HILL 2 video game on which the film is based.

Yamaoka’s musical signature has been an integral part of the series since the first note of the original video game. His work for Return to Silent Hill marks his third time writing music for a motion picture set in the SILENT HILL universe, but this time he returns as the sole composer.

The score for the motion picture was guided by three guiding principles he’s developed while working on SILENT HILL scores – to “not decide music through emotions,” an aspiration to “blur the boundary between music and environmental sound, between reality and the inner world,” and finally, to “not reject beauty.”

“The horror of SILENT HILL is not merely unpleasant or violent. There is always something fragile, human, and irretrievably beautiful mixed within it. Refusing to deny that has remained unchanged since the beginning,” Yamaoka explains.

Working closely with director Christophe Gans, Yamaoka built the score piece by piece to extract the underlying sensibility of the world of SILENT HILL 2 and reconstruct it into music that can stand on its own as a film score. Series veterans will recognize iconic cues from the video games that have been reimagined in tracks such as “Chasing Laura” and “Brookhaven Hospital”.

“The goal was never to replay the game’s music as it was,” Yamaoka explains. “Instead, the challenge was to reinterpret it—to alter its meaning, its distance, and its placement—so it could breathe within the film’s sense of time, imagery, and the inner lives of the characters. It was not a quotation, but a reimagining.”

Whether you consider yourself a master of survival horror or this is your first time stepping into the fog of SILENT HILL, the Return to Silent Hill Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is a melting pot of distorted sounds and jagged textures unified by a single sensation: unstable, murky, and yet somehow beautiful.

That one summer that felt like everything… until it wasn’t. The rain-soaked phone booth, the pool, the fireworks, the moments where it almost felt real. kensuke ushio’s summer’s end score lives right in that space between tenderness and collapse, where quiet love turns into chaos in an instant.

Caribou

The Milk Of Human Kindness - 2026 Repress

'The Milk of Human Kindness' is Dan Snaith's third studio album, originally released in 2005. It marked the first record credited to the Caribou name, after Snaith dropped his previous Manitoba moniker following a threatened lawsuit from Handsome Dick Manitoba of The Dictators.

Rather than start from scratch, Snaith folded the two sides of himself together — the icy precision of 'Start Breaking My Heart' and the sun-drenched sprawl of 'Up in Flames' — into something both hypnotic - influenced by French progressive rock and German krautrock of the 1970s - and pastoral.

The record was met with strong critical acclaim, and its singles, 'Yeti' and 'Barnowl', remain fan favorites to this day. Against the backdrop of the legal name change it is simultaneously the end of a chapter while also quietly setting the stage for the run of albums that would follow.

Karen Dalton

In My Own Time - 50th Anniversary Edition

Karen Dalton’s 1971 album, In My Own Time, stands as a true masterpiece by one of music’s most mysterious, enigmatic, and enduringly influential artists. Celebrating the album’s 50th anniversary, Light in the Attic is honored to present a newly remastered (2021) edition of the album on LP, CD, cassette, and 8-Track.

All audio has been newly remastered by Dave Cooley, while lacquers were cut by Phil Rodriguez at Elysian Masters.

A newly expanded booklet—featuring rarely seen photos, liner notes from musician and writer Lenny Kaye, and contributions from Nick Cave and Devendra Banhart—rounds out the CD (32-pgs) and LP (20-pgs) packages.
The Oklahoma-raised Karen Dalton (1937-1993) brought a range of influences to her work. As Lenny Kaye writes in the liner notes, one can hear “the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, the immersion of Nina Simone, the Appalachian keen of Jean Ritchie, [and] the R&B and country that had to seep in as she made her way to New York."

Armed with a long-necked banjo and a 12-stringed guitar, Dalton set herself apart from her peers with her distinctive, world-weary vocals. In the early ‘60s, she became a fixture in the Greenwich Village folk scene, interpreting traditional material, blues standards, and the songs of her contemporaries, including Tim Hardin, Fred Neil, and Richard Tucker, whom she later married. Bob Dylan, meanwhile, was instantly taken with her artistry. “My favorite singer in the place was Karen Dalton,” he recalled in Chronicles: Volume One (Simon & Schuster, 2004). “Karen had a voice like Billie Holiday and played the guitar like Jimmy Reed.”

Those who knew Dalton understood that she was not interested in bowing to the whims of the record industry. On stage, she rarely interacted with audience members. In the studio, she was equally as uncomfortable with the recording process. Her 1969 debut, It’s So Hard to Tell Who’s Going To Love You The Best, reissued by Light in the Attic in 2009, was captured on the sly when Dalton assumed that she was rehearsing songs. When Woodstock co-promoter Michael Lang approached Dalton about recording a follow-up for his new imprint, Just Sunshine, she was dubious, to say the least. The album would have to be made on her own terms, in her own time. That turned out to be a six-month period at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, NY.

Producing the album was bassist Harvey Brooks, who played alongside Dalton on It’s So Hard to Tell Who’s Going To Love You The Best. Brooks, who prided himself on being “simple, solid and supportive,” understood Dalton’s process, but was also willing to offer gentle encouragement, and challenge the artist to push her creative bounds. “I tried to present her with a flexible situation,” he told Kaye. “I left the decisions to her, to determine the tempo, feel. She was very quiet, and I brought all of it to her; if she needed more, I’d present options. Everyone was sensitive to her. She was the leader.”

Dalton, who rarely performed her own compositions, selected a range of material to interpret—from traditionals like “Katie Cruel” and “Same Old Man” to Paul Butterfield’s “In My Own Dream” and Richard Tucker’s “Are You Leaving For The Country.” She also expanded upon her typical repertoire, peppering in such R&B hits as “When a Man Loves a Woman” and “How Sweet It Is.” In a departure from her previous LP, Dalton’s new recording offered fuller, more pop-forward arrangements, featuring a slew of talented studio musicians.

While ‘70s audiences may not have been ready for Dalton’s music, a new generation was about to discover her work. In the decades following her death, a slew of artists would name Karen Dalton as an influence, including Lucinda Williams, Joanna Newsom, Nick Cave, Angel Olsen, Devendra Banhart, Sharon Van Etten, Courtney Barnett, and Adele. In the recent acclaimed film documentary Karen Dalton: In My Own Time, Cave muses on Dalton’s unique appeal: “There’s a sort of demand made upon the listener,” he explains. “Whether you like it or not, you have to enter her world. And it’s a despairing world.” Peter Walker, who also appears in the film, elaborates on this idea: “If she can feel a certain way in her music and play it in such a way that you feel that way, then that’s really the most magical thing [one] can do.” He adds, “She had a deep and profound and loving soul…you can hear it in her music.”

Christian Death

Only Theatre Of Pain - 2026 Reissue

Hailed as a masterpiece of it’s genre, and considered by many as ground zero for Deathrock, 'Only Theatre of Pain' is a seminal work of unholy power and pitch black emotion. Whilst this record may have it’s roots in punk - the origins of this true original version of Christian Death took place in Southern California during the early 80’s hardcore explosion - it cannot be overstated how important this record was in shaping the subsequent landscape. Emerging like an adrenaline shot into the heart of darkness, this unrestrained and mysterious recording still remains unclassifiable.

Featuring the late visionary Rozz Williams (then only in his teens) alongside punk luminary Rikk Agnew (guiding light in the Adolescents), James McGearty and George Belanger, Only Theatre of Pain’s musical exploration is adorned with psychosexual lyricism and an innate struggle with faith. Rozz’s vocals creep and possess, demonic and haunting, against the captivating, unmistakable guitar work of trailblazer Agnew. It’s a performance, but also a truth, perhaps 'Only Theatre of Pain' is an art show, as much as it is an era defining record.

Aside from their spellbinding sound, it may have also been the lore of Christian Death that set them apart from other LA goth bands of the time. A near-nude Rozz Williams nailed to a cross at the Whiskey a Go Go may have played a part, but what it is apparent when you listen to the unhallowed musical stages on 'Only Theatre Of Pain' is a depth of vision and orchestration that goes beyond the simple stance of brooding many of their contemporaries emulated, delving into the realms of pure unadulterated catharsis. The result is an eradefining statement that remains as unsettling, innovative, and resonant today as it was over four decades ago.

'Only Theatre Of Pain' is presented here newly remastered with early demo’s and rare material, further demonstrating why Christian Death stood alone in their sound and approach. This journey of religious depravity, recorded by the legendary producer Thom Wilson in a matter of days, harnesses the huge concepts of band projecting older than their years. Ahead of the curve in sonic artistry and visual aesthetics, this slab of sacrilegious American punk is nothing short of essential listening for the gothic inclined. A must for fans of The Misfits, Bauhaus and The Cramps.

Space

The Art Of Space Disco (1977-1978) - Best Of

A major figure in electronic music and pioneer of cosmic disco, Space was founded in 1977 by Didier Marouani. 'Magic Fly', its first single, embodies its futuristic DNA (a melodious, cosmic and disco-inspired composition).

Following its worldwide success, 3 albums were released in 2 years : 'Magic Fly' (1977), blending melodic richness with synthetic innovation, delivered both dancefloor hits and midtempo tracks. 'Deliverance' (1977) is a typical 70s concept album, ranging from disco to cosmic electronic music. 'Just Blue' (1978) is a more melancholic album featuring broader orchestrations and complex harmonies. These 3 records sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

'The Art Of Space Disco (1977-1978)' presents Space's most iconic tracks and sums up two fruitful intense years of musical innovation.

Hydroplane

Selected Songs 1997-2003 - 2026 Repress

Hydroplane would be familiar to anyone already following these breadcrumb trails – Andrew Withycombe, Bart Cummings and Kerrie Bolton were the group’s core, all members of The Cat’s Miaow. With Cat’s Miaow drummer Cameron Smith itinerant, having moved to London, the trio used this opportunity to expand their music. It’s a subtle, but important shift. If The Cat’s Miaow was about the perfect, minimalist, two-minute pop song, Hydroplane’s music was far more open-ended, embracing the loops and drones, sampled house-y shuffle beats, the burbling of a Roland Jupiter-4 synth, all of which the trio joined, effortlessly, to their endless capacity for moving, elegant melodicism. They may have only planned to release one seven-inch single, but the sound Hydroplane created was so bewitching, so compelling, that the project’s lifespan ran for around half a decade, and they ended up releasing three albums, including a self-titled debut recently reissued by Efficient Space, and seven singles. There are all kinds of compelling things happening in the music compiled here – the hazy repetition of the gentler side of Krautrock is in here, somewhere, which also suggests Stereolab at their most intimate and disarmed; the gently drifting guitars, gauzy and oneiric, set the songs adrift and floating, each one lost in its own imagined, distracted world.

Songs like 'The Love You Bring' set indistinct tonal floats across dance rhythms, in a way not quite heard since My Bloody Valentine’s 'Instrumental' – but with the added gift of Bolton’s gorgeous voice. This loose coalition with dance music, and the quiet experimentalism at the heart of Hydroplane, also gestures towards peers like Hood, Acetate Zero and Other People’s Children, and releases on renegade labels like Wurlitzer Jukebox and Enraptured. Like those groups and labels, The Cat’s Miaow were reconciling independent pop music’s past – sweet melody and melancholy, chiming and droning guitars – with the futures promised by DIY electronics and nascent digitalia, the interface of indie and IDM that led to some of the underground’s most blissful, texturally swoonsome music. All that is here, but also, the poise of the melodies is pure Cat’s Miaow, though, with Bolton’s voice sailing, pacifically, over some of the most pared-down, gorgeous music made during their decade. It was a time, too, when such music could make waves – 'We Crossed The Atlantic', one of their early singles, was picked up by John Peel, who played it repeatedly on his legendary radio show, the song reaching #13 on his 1997 Festive 50. That the song itself was a cover of a tune by 1960s Australian beatnik-pop-poet Pip Proud felt even more perfect – a group of outsiders paying tribute to another outsider, played on the radio one of the few broadcasters brave and human enough to take a chance on this music. But it was a time where everything was up for grabs, and genres were flowing into each other: folk songs went drone; indie re-discovered noise; ambient pop floated, again, out onto the dancefloor. And while they may have been sequestered away in Melbourne, Australia, Hydroplane felt core to that scene, a quietly driving force. Compiling material from across their brief but mercurial career, this double album perfectly captures the magic and mystery of Hydroplane’s dreamlike, perfect pop songs.

Owen Cutts

Have You Ever Heard Old Music? : 52 Essential Records You Need In Your Life

In an era where technology threatens the art of songwriting and production, 'old' music matters more than ever. Those classic songs from decades ago that still carry so much power are each totally unique, but all were shaped by immense skill, hard work, and moments of pure creative inspiration. Now, esteemed producer Owen Cutts - who has brought his infectious passion to the world through his Old Music Friday series - opens up his record collection to share 52 essential, groundbreaking songs that anyone who cares about music should hear.

From Minnie Ripperton to The Delfonics, The Beatles to Aretha Franklin, Al Green to Dusty Springfield, Owen picks apart the craft behind each song, and delves into why these recordings still cut through the noise and connect so deeply with listeners. This is a book for anyone looking to expand their sonic horizons, understand the creative process and lose themselves in great music. It's about songs that refuse to age, and why they still resonate all these years later.

Only Music Matters continues its staunchly no-frills approach to releasing music under the eponymous production moniker and with no fancy track titles, but a high-quality and weighty vinyl pressing designed for serious club business. 'AAA001A' is a beefy minimal cut with voices turned into ghostly trails that shimmer amid dusty percussion in a sleek tech groove that dances just above the floor. 'BBB001B' has a bubbly feel thanks to airy pads that gently circle the zoned-out and dubby groove. 'BBB002B' is a more heads-down flip that revels in great snares and funky double kicks.

Afflecks Palace

Move And Keep Moving

'Move and Keep Moving' is taken from Afflecks Palace’s new album 'Sunshine Death' and features the Yorkshire Imperial Band, one of Britain’s most celebrated colliery brass bands. Written following vocalist J Fender’s near-fatal “widowmaker” heart attack, the song highlights the often-overlooked mental trauma that can follow a major heart event — but approaches it with positivity, defiance and hope.

Mitski

Puberty 2 - 10th Anniversary Edition

Ask Mitski Miyawaki about happiness and she'll warn you: “Happiness fucks you.” It's a lesson that's been writ large into her gritty, outsider songwriting for years, but never so powerfully as on her 2016 album, 'Puberty 2'. “Happiness is up, sadness is down, but one's almost more destructive than the other,” she says. “When you realize you can't have one without the other, it's possible to spend periods of happiness just waiting for that other wave.” On 'Puberty 2', that tension is palpable: a beautiful and brutal romantic hinterland, in which one of modern music’s defining voices came fully into focus.

2026 marks the ten-year anniversary of that landmark album, whose tracklist contains fan favorites 'Your Best American Girl' and 'I Bet on Losing Dogs'. To celebrate the occasion, Mitski and Dead Oceans release a limited-edition reissue of 'Puberty 2' on Forest Shadow vinyl.

God Of War

Molly Picture

God of War is Douglas Dulgarian (They Are Gutting A Body Of Water), Scott Turner (hooky) and Sam Silbert (hooky, circle of fire).

It's 2007. You’re watching your older cousin play SSX tricky. How is he such a monster at this game. Dude for real what the fuck. Such style, such finesse. I know he smokes weed. Should I tell Aunt Vicky? No no no- that would ruin this moment. He is racking up points that were formerly unheard of, and with such grace. There’s no expression on his face. And considering that he just sat open mouthed at the dinner table staring into nothing for forty minutes, this revelation is more than remarkable. It seems as if he has always existed in this moment. As if his very essence was plucked from the ether. And perhaps he has. He was made for this moment.

The Mission

God's Own Medicine - 2026 Reissue

Now featuring corrected album title and artwork and sequenced as originally planned by Wayne Hussey including the full-length version of ‘Love Me To Death’ previously omitted from the album release and never released on vinyl in full before.

The Mission were formed in 1986 by former Sisters of Mercy band members Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams, soon adding guitarist Simon Hinkler - all of whom are in the present day line-up and about to celebrate 40 years since the release of their debut album ‘God’s Own Medicine’.

Following a couple of EP releases the band signed a seven-album recording contract with Phonogram in July 1986 and their debut album, ‘God's Own Medicine’, was recorded in six weeks with producer Tim Palmer, an acquaintance from Hussey's Dead or Alive days.

Gloria De Oliveira

The Lying Swans

Darkness can be revealing. Joy feels different after grief, sharper and clearer. Though allowing the light in again after desolation can be incredibly challenging, especially when the wounds of the past still haunt the present. 'The Lying Swans', Gloria de Oliveira’s third full length, explores this in depth, like a work of Gothic literary fiction set in motion by the image of a woman fleeing a haunted house; this central image also shaped the album's visual world. Produced by Randall Dunn (Anna von Hausswolff, Sunn O))), Marissa Nadler) and recorded between Iceland, New York and Berlin, the result is an oneiric world where enchantment and danger coexist.

“I numb my hurt one last time”, sings de Oliveira in the first single 'Fading Faces', as a farewell to darker times. The ethereal lightness of the shimmering synth layers contrasts with thunderous drums and glam-rock inflected guitars. The resulting tension amplifies the song’s bittersweet beauty, fully embodied her siren voice, yearning and unguarded. The accompanying music video, directed by de Oliveira herself, depicts her stranded like a Pre-Raphaelite water nymph on a mystical Brazilian beach, between black cliffs and pink sand.

On 'Fading Faces', Gloria de Oliveira offered "This is not only the first single, but also the very first piece of music I wrote when I started working on the album. It was also the first song that Randall Dunn and I later recorded together in Iceland. In many ways, it’s the reason the album even exists - ‘Fading Faces’ required me to allow myself this degree of vulnerability that permeates ‘The Lying Swans’. Musically, it still follows the tradition of my previous albums to some extent, while simultaneously drawing on new modes of expression.”

Holly Johnson

Legendary Children (All Of Them Queer) - 2026 Reissue

'Legendary Children (All of Them Queer)' is a celebrated 1994 dance-pop track by former Frankie Goes to Hollywood frontman Holly Johnson. The song acts as an upbeat LGBTQ+ historical roll-call, honoring historical queer icons from Andy Warhol to Leonardo da Vinci, and was notably performed at London's Gay Pride in 1994. The song is based on the iconic Paris Is Burning and features the brilliant vocals of Helen Terry (Culture Club/2wo Third3).

Released on the album 'Soulstream', the song is famous for its spoken-word verses and euphoric chorus celebrating legendary figures like Oscar Wilde, Jean Cocteau, and Joe Orton. The overarching message is captured in its defiant lyric: "The answer is clear, they're all of them queer."

Now 2026 sees brand new versions by Luv Foundation (UK). George from the Sharp Boys, a dear friend of Holly's and Mark Loverush, mentioned to Holly that Luv Foundation (UK) should do the rework. Mark Loverush and Julian Napolitano wanted to capture as much of the original essence as possible, keeping that 90s flavor while giving the remix a big, classic feel reflective of how it would sound today.

This is a limited edition of 700 pink vinyl, including 2 of the original versions alongside 2 remixes by Luv Foundation (UK).  It comes in brand new artwork by Philip Marshall.

The missing key component to all of this middle era Garage Punk junk. Culled from the last 3 shows here are the creme de la creme of the tunes. Some long bloated fliers and some short sweet friers. We had such a good time that this is the version of the band that will be touring this year. 6 piece OSEES - Greasy We will also be adding some newer material and surprise crypt-crackers to keep it up to snuff. Fujiya & Miyagi

New Shiny Object

Brighton kosmiche pop outfit Fujiya & Miyagi announce brand new album 'New Shiny Object’, released 30th October through Impossible Objects Of Desire.

Fujiya & Miyagi know when something is worth waiting for. ‘New Shiny Object’ is an album which has been through multiple iterations over its four-year recording span, only to emerge with the truth. An ode to the transfixing, magical properties art can have, it’s consciously the work of older musicians – or as David puts it, “people who’ve lived a life.” The new record also marks 26 years of Fujiya & Miyagi and 20 years since their breakthrough album 'Transparent Things' became a global hit. This saw the band tour the world for the first time and gain notoriety of a different kind through a Jaguar car advert featuring the slinky rhythms of 'Collarbone'. Follow up third album 'Lightbulbs' (2008) led to a synch in 'Breaking Bad' the hip-shaking funk of 'Uh', securing their place in many new fans’ hearts - and in the Spotify playlist foreverland.

Initially the plan was for 'New Shiny Object' to have been recorded live, with Fujiya & Miyagi stripping back their sound to the bare essentials. Aspects of that stripped back approach remain, with ‘New Shiny Object’ emphasising directness, and the band’s melodic prowess. “I wanted us to write melodies that really touched people,” David explains. “There’s tendencies to pour your guts out on everything, whether that’s musically or verbally. I think music’s better when it’s got a bit of space. We wanted all the parts of each song to connect like the mechanism in a watch.”

It’s a record that can discuss personal loss and fatherhood, often openly emotive while also displaying a wry sense of humour. David Best's lyrics are match fit on this record and full of his vivid, pithy take on the world. A succinct nine tracks, ‘New Shiny Object’ speaks to you in a direct, often moving fashion. “I think, as I get older, I'm more open,” David observes. “I’m trying to let my guard down. When you get to a certain age and you’re trying to express emotions, you need to be a bit braver and say exactly how you feel.”

‘New Shiny Object’ is the work of a band for whom the latest challenge is always the most thrilling. The title song draws from the stubborn energy that has kept Fujiya & Miyagi motoring along for more than two decades, navigating a difficult industry with values and dignity intact. “When you
are writing a song or coming up with ideas; it's always the new ones that are most exciting,” David points out. “At its core though it’s about the thirst for new ideas and the joy in creating something from nothing. Which will never not be a magical thing.”

For fans of LCD Soundsystem, Neu!, CAN, Talking Heads and New Order, 'New Shiny Object' is Fujiya & Miyagi's unique and thoughtful take on everyday life, transformed into art and ready for the dancefloor.

Roky Erickson And The Aliens

The Evil One - 2026 Reissue

The seminal psych-rock classic 'The Evil One' by Roky Erickson And The Aliens is reissued by Fire Records in a deluxe 15-track edition, restoring the original front cover from San Francisco’s 415 Records release for the first time since 1981. Presented across two LPs cut at 45 rpm for maximum sonic depth and clarity, the release brings together the complete recordings from the legendary 1978 and 1979 sessions. The package includes a collector’s booklet with liner notes by acclaimed Austin music journalist Joe Nick Patoski, who attended a recording session for The Evil One in 1979. Alongside rare photographs and archival images from the collection of Roky’s then manager, Craig Luckin.

Following his release from Rusk State Hospital in 1974, Erickson formed The Aliens and channelled his experiences and fascination with horror and science fiction into a singular new sound. Moving beyond the psychedelic garage blues of the 13th Floor Elevators, the band created harder, more ferocious rock built around jagged guitars, strange melodies and a propulsive rhythm section.

Produced by Creedence Clearwater Revival bassist Stu Cook, The Evil One includes some of Erickson’s most celebrated recordings, including ‘Two Headed Dog’, ‘I Walked With A Zombie’ and ‘It’s A Cold Night For Alligators’. Erickson’s unmistakable voice and surreal lyrics, populated by zombies, demons, vampires and atomic monsters, gave the album a character unlike anything else in rock. Both the LP and CD editions feature rare photographs and images from the archive of Erickson’s then manager and the sessions’ executive producer, Craig Luckin.

'The Evil One' has since become a landmark of cult rock, with its songs covered by generations of artists and its influence extending across punk, alternative and psychedelic music. As Craig Luckin recalls, “Roky considers 'The Evil One' to be his favourite album that he ever recorded. He really loves that album.”

Austin music journalist Joe Nick Patoski, who attended one of the album’s 1979 sessions, contributes a new essay to the LP and CD packaging, exploring Erickson’s extraordinary career, enduring influence and place in Texas rock history.

More than a standalone reissue, this deluxe edition of 'The Evil One' opens an exciting new series honouring Roky Erickson’s extraordinary body of work, with 'Gremlins Have Pictures' and 'Don’t Slander Me' to follow in 2027.

Acid Casuals

Omni - 2026 Reissue

Somewhere between the Super Furry Animals’ Love Kraft in 2005 and their first Rough Trade album ‘Hey Venus!’ Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet and Acid Casuals released their one and only album Omni….

Two decades after its release, the sole Acid Casuals album, Omni, is finally being released to completists on vinyl, reissued in remastered form. Returning on not only black audiophile LP, but also CD and digital formats, the celebratory release brings back into circulation a singular record from the same fertile ecosystem that produced Super Furry Animals and has long been established as a vital, if undercelebrated chapter of Welsh music folklore.

Acid Casuals was born in 1994 and remains a loose Cardiff community of musicians, artists and friends, with Furries synths wrangler, Cian Ciarán, former Big Leaves bassist, Kev Tame and musician and actor, Llyr Evans at its original centre. Never conceived as a conventional band, both the collective’s nucleic performers and those with walk-on parts dipped in and out when time allowed. As time passed, ideas accumulated, tours and albums came and went, the Acid Casuals identity remained deliberately fluid.

Released in 2006, Omni arrived in the curious space between the Super Furry Animals albums, Love Kraft and Hey Venus! and came to be emblematic, amongst its informed listeners, of that same adventurous musical outlook. Its ten tracks move freely between electronic abstraction, ambient melody, skewed pop, vocal experimentation and the kind of psychedelic songcraft that had become second nature and further developed. The range of the record’s ideas is there in its strange and memorable titles alone: from the Richard Burton-indebted If I’m A Selt, You’re A Sunt and 132a Column Road through Wa Da Da, Kraken and Luciano, to the woozy doo-wop romance of the closing track, Bowl Me Over.

For listeners taking their curious first steps from the Furries into Acid Casuals, or for vinyl completists, a long missing piece of the jigsaw is about to fall into place.

Queens Of The Stone Age

Perfecth

Queens of the Stone Age have always remained enduringly, singularly magnetic. It isn't just their sound. It's their spirit. They are provocative in the most essential sense: unafraid to explore the dark, the sexual, the surreal, the absurd. It's art that snarls and seduces in equal measure, and never more so than on the band’s ninth album, 'Perfecth'.

Kintsugi — the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by filling its cracks with gold — holds that what has been shattered is made more beautiful, not less, by the act of repair. This is the spirit in which 'Perfecth' was made. An album that could only have been made right now thanks to Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen, Michael Shuman, Dean Fertita, and Jon Theodore taking significant evolutionary steps as a collective and arriving at hard-won clarity, its nine songs map different forms of love: of family, friends, and others both significant and insignificant. The loves that break you beyond survival and the loves that put you back together.

Birthed from sessions tracked everywhere from New Orleans to Los Angeles, the music is fearless and boundless, moody and menacing, gentle and strange. Here, Queens have moved a career's worth of jagged pieces into alignment. "Every song sounds like it's from a different world," says Homme. "And that's on purpose, because it's trying to stitch together all these emotions revolving around love, lust, foolishness, and the sort of wisdom that comes as a gift from all that."

The record is called 'Perfecth' because "perfect," as a word, has never been honest. It doesn't exist. So, Homme broke the word and made it "perfecth," a more appropriate spelling for a term that never felt right to begin with. "Nothing in this world is perfect, but everything seems to be 'perfecth'," he explains. "And that title is funny when you're in a group, but it ain't so funny when you're alone.”

Cornelius

REFRACTIONS

Japanese sonic visionary Cornelius returns with his long-awaited ninth studio album.

When ‘Fantasma’ landed in 1997, it didn’t just earn critical acclaim - it rewired expectations. Hailed in the press as a “modern-day Brian Wilson” and the “Japanese Beck,” Cornelius fused technicolour pop with microscopic production detail, crafting a record that became a cult touchstone for adventurous listeners worldwide. In the years since, he has released eight boundary-pushing albums, each expanding his singular universe of sound.

A true musician’s musician, Cornelius counts admirers including Yoko Ono, Damon Albarn, Beck, Beastie Boys and producer Nigel Godrich. He has collaborated with legends such as Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto of Yellow Magic Orchestra, further cementing his status as a cornerstone of forward-thinking music culture. More recently, global pop icon Rosalía spotlighted Cornelius’s ‘Typewrite Lesson’ in her Met Gala–themed Vogue playlist of all-time favourite songs - proof that his influence continues to ripple across generations and genres.

Album nine sharpens decades of sonic exploration into something intimate yet expansive and surprising - intricate rhythms, shimmering detail and widescreen psychedelia in perfect balance. Featuring guest vocals from Sean Lennon and an unexpected, brilliant cover of The Monochrome Set. The album is a luminous new statement from one of modern music’s most quietly pioneering and revolutionary artists.

Featuring tracks with guest vocals from Sean Ono Lennon, Bid and Arto Lindsay, ‘Refractions’ is one of Pitchfork’s most anticipated Summer releases.

Kali Malone

Burning Song

'Burning Song', composer and organist Kali Malone’s first new album since 2024’s 'All Life Long', represents a transformation in her compositional strategy towards a process that is intuitive and direct. The album was recorded at the historic Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Germany, where J.S. Bach was cantor for the last 27 years of his life; his body rests beneath the sanctuary. Malone is the first musician to perform contemporary works on the church’s Bach Organ, an instrument completed in 2000 but with bespoke tuning and temperament systems based on historical norms of the baroque period. She is joined by Lucy Railton on cello and Stephen O’Malley on bowed acoustic guitar, the same trio that honed a profound connection based on deep listening through the development of Malone’s work 'Does Spring Hide Its Joy'. Chord follows chord, each in slow succession, emerging like stones of various shades and shapes on a winding path. The trio moves as one, stepwise, through passages that are alternately ambiguous and radiant.

PISS

You Made Me / Skin On Linen

PISS is a noisy, genre-bending four-piece band from Vancouver, B.C. Combining punk, poetry, sound collage, performance art, and visual art, the band creates a multidisciplinary body of work that blurs the line between personal and political.

Powered by thoughtful musicianship, energetic live performances, and a crystal-clear artistic mission, PISS writes punk music that aims to transcend the limitations of a well-established genre. Their work draws inspiration from a range of unexpected influences: literary giants, philosophers, filmmakers, painters, psychoanalysts, activists, children, members of a German anarcho-feminist militant group, and conversations with audience members. These voices represent varying ideological beliefs about gender-based violence and enable PISS to create art that depicts challenging and controversial issues such as sexual violence and enculturated gender norms without reduction, romanticization, polemics, or dogmatism.

'you made me / skin on linen' is the band’s debut full-length. It depicts a childhood shaped by structural, systemic, and intimate violence. Throughout the record, art-making motifs serve as metaphors for the myriad ways we carry the effects of this violence: each experience leaves an impression, gradually creating or deforming the self, much like a piece of clay moulded by every mark it receives.

Mogwai

Come On Die Young - 2026 Reissue

Mogwai’s iconic second album ‘Come On Die Young’ reissued on a fresh grey coloured vinyl. Presented in a gatefold sleeve with original artwork, this reissue comes with a digital download code.

Originally released in March 1999, ‘Come On Die Young’s artwork references The Exorcist and a title scalped from a well-known Glasgow gang slogan. Instead of the cover’s suggested apocalypse-harbouring, pre-millennial assault on the senses however, this second offering from the band was a darkly elegiac – and surprisingly restrained – response to the aural fireworks of their ‘Young Team’ debut from two years earlier.

Federale

Love & Other Lies

'Love & Other Lies' teems with a dark sentimentality and a pronounced gloomy sensibility drawing from British new wave, post-punk, goth, and 1960s rock n’ roll. Strains of The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Tears for Fears, and even The Beatles abound. Hegna’s emotive baritone is swathed in period-perfect Prophet-5 synthesizers and glistening counter-melody guitars lines, and supported by intricate but lyrical basslines and cold and mechanical drums. The lyrics are veiled, visceral, and abstract, yet peppered with shard’s of truth from Hegna’s life and his observations. They reflect a modern world where reality itself feels increasingly tenuous, truth is subjective, communities are shattered by irreconcilable division, and a collective malaise hangs in the air. In this dystopia, if love is merely another lie, it suggests a bleak outlook for our future; essentially, the title is a fancy way of saying that “We Are All Fucked.” 'Love & Other Lies' picks up where it’s previous album, 'Reverb & Seduction', left off. That album was a radical departure from Federale’s previous releases which featured mostly instrumentals. “There are a lot more similarities than you think,” he says of the group’s seemingly two distinct aesthetic periods. “When we were referencing the obscure influences, we liked the drama and darkness. Those elements are in new wave, goth, and post-punk. I just grabbed another couple of colors from the Crayon box.”

The Twelve Songs Of Christmas: Britain's Love Affair With The Xmas No. 1

The Twelve Songs Of Christmas tells the whole story by covering a dozen Christmas number ones, stretching from Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1950 - a song that feels like it's been around forever - to Wham's Last Christmas, which finally made it to number one in 2023, thirty-nine years after it was first released.

Each chapter will talk about the background behind each song, the songwriter and the performer. Not all of them will be Christmas songs - the Beatles dominated the Christmas number one slot in the sixties, and the Spice Girls likewise in the late nineties, but none of them were Christmas songs. Pink Floyd's one and only number one single soundtracked a bleak Christmas at the end of the seventies, with the country, a few months into the Thatcher era, in a depressing state of flux.

The book also digs into the Christmas records that didn't make it to number one, including lesser-known gems like Kate Bush's December Will Be Magic Again, denied in 1980 as the world mourned the death of John Lennon, and Mariah Carey's leviathan All I Want For Christmas Is You, which has still never made it to become the Christmas number one, even in the streaming era.

Wednesday (MJ Lenderman)

Rat Saw God

A Wednesday song is a quilt. A short story collection, a half-memory, a patchwork of portraits of the American south, disparate moments that somehow make sense as a whole. Karly Hartzman, the songwriter/ vocalist/guitarist at the helm of the project, is a story collector as much as she is a storyteller: a scholar of people and one-liners. Rat Saw God, the Asheville quintet’s new and best record, is ekphrastic but autobiographical and above all, deeply empathetic. Across the album’s ten tracks Hartzman, guitarist MJ Lenderman, bassist Margo Shultz, drummer Alan Miller, and lap/pedal steel player Xandy Chelmis build a shrine to minutiae. Half-funny, half-tragic dispatches from North Carolina unfurling somewhere between the wailing skuzz of Nineties shoegaze and classic country twang, that distorted lap steel and Hartzman’s voice slicing through the din.

Rat Saw God is an album about riding a bike down a suburban stretch in Greensboro while listening to My Bloody Valentine for the first time on an iPod Nano, past a creek that runs through the neighborhood riddled with broken glass bottles and condoms, a front yard filled with broken and rusted car parts, a lonely and dilapidated house reclaimed by kudzu. Four Lokos and rodeo clowns and a kid who burns down a corn field. Roadside monuments, church marquees, poppers and vodka in a plastic water bottle, the shit you get away with at Jewish summer camp, strange sentimental family heirlooms at the thrift stores. The way the South hums alive all night in the summers and into fall, the sound of high school football games, the halo effect from the lights polluting the darkness. It’s not really bright enough to see in front of you, but in that stretch of inky void – somehow – you see everything.

The songs on Rat Saw God don’t recount epics, just the everyday. They’re true, they’re real life, blurry and chaotic and strange – which is in-line with Hartzman’s own ethos: “Everyone’s story is worthy,” she says, plainly. “Literally every life story is worth writing down, because people are so fascinating.”

But the thing about Rat Saw God - and about any Wednesday song, really - is you don’t necessarily even need all the references to get it, the weirdly specific elation of a song that really hits. Yeah, it’s all in the details – how fucked up you got or get, how you break a heart, how you fall in love, how you make yourself and others feel seen – but it’s mostly the way those tiny moments add up into a song or album or a person.

Orchestra Baobab

Made In Senegal

Strut proudly presents the first release in almost a decade from the legendary Senegalese group Orchestra Baobab with Made In Senegal.

Few groups embody the spirit of African music like Orchestra Baobab. Formed over 50 years ago as the resident band of the Baobab Club in Dakar, their timeless fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms, Wolof griot traditions, mbalax, Congolese rumba and jazz continues to resonate across generations and continents. Now, the celebrated big band marks a new chapter in their illustrious history with Made in Senegal, their first new studio album since Tribute To Ndiouga Dieng in 2017 for World Circuit. Released on respected imprint Strut Records in conjunction with Madoky Music, the new album celebrates home, heritage, love and resilience and was recorded entirely in Dakar.

Undeterred by the passing of several key founding members over the past decade, the orchestra has evolved organically, with sons, nephews and longtime collaborators carrying the legacy forward. Today’s line-up blends veteran musicians with a younger generation determined to preserve Baobab’s enduring sound. Long-time members Thierno Koité (saxophone / bandleader), Taga Koité (drums) master percussionist Moussa Cissokho and Yahya Fall (rhythm guitar) are joined by lead vocalists Zacharia “Papino” Koité and Korka Dieng (the band’s first female frontwoman), bassist Malick Sy, guitarist René “Bolero” Sowatche, and saxophonist/trombonist Wilfrid Zinzou, continuing the orchestra’s tradition with discipline, warmth and unmistakable groove.

On Made In Senegal new songs sit effortlessly beside re-imagined classics. Lead single ‘Togne Bakhoul’ composed by late Baobab vocalist Rudy Gomis is a poignant ode to his wife and ‘Tioro Bye Samba’ reprises a classic Thione Seck song while ‘Casamance’ celebrates the culturally rich Southern Senegalese region, homeland of several Baobab members. ‘Baobab 50 Ans’ marks the 50-year anniversary of this indomitable group.

Made In Senegal is another modern Baobab classic combining a fresh approach with roots fixed firmly in Senegal’s rich traditions. It is the perfect time for a new generation to discover the elegant, hypnotic sound of one of Africa’s greatest ever big bands.

Fingerman is the label owner and he goes first here with 'Phunkee Party', a seductive sound with twanging bass riffs and chunky drums under soaring vocals. The talented I Gemin then drops 'Sambalike', a more nuanced and subtle groove that worms its way under your skin and then the love gets dialled up on the flip side thanks to Chuggin Edits and 'Anita's Mystery', a blissed-out roller bathed in sun. Smokecloud Records boss Osmose shuts down with some bright, retro disco soul in the form of an edgy rework of 'Ur Luv.'

Claud

Me And The Music

Does everything have to feel so heavy all the time? Claud Mintz fights with this question all the time. Not polite little tiffs, either: Big, dragout, existential wars, the kind that might push you to eventually change the tenor of your whole life. The 10 songs on their rich and resplendent third album 'Me and the Music' find the 27-year-old Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter-producer grappling with that question and coming up, triumphantly, with something close to an answer: Things can be heavy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun.

Things can be heavy, but that beer in your hand isn’t—why not hold it aloft for a moment, sing along with the friends surrounding you, forget your troubles for the length of a perfect indie-pop song? 'Me and the Music' is Claud’s first album in three years, since 2023’s acclaimed 'Supermodels'. Both 'Supermodels' and 2021’s 'Super Monster', were largely inspired by “this one situationship” that, they realised sometime during the writing of 'Me and the Music', “really wasn’t ever anything.” "'Supermodels' was such a serious record, and I just sulked in feelings for so long,” says Claud. “There’s a difference between being sincere with life and taking life too seriously.” Coming to that realization changed everything: On 'Me and the Music’s title track, they sing that “this is the last song I let you ruin,” and they meant it. Once Claud wrote that song—at the famed Electric Lady Studios with their friends Hank Heaven and Annie DiRusso—they began to feel totally unburdened. “It released a lot of regret that I was carrying with me, and it allowed me to be like… this is so fun,” they say. “Making music is so fun.” 'Me and the Music’s MO, then, is songs that capture the knottiness of growing up and existing in the world that don’t lose a sense of playfulness or fun. It’s a quintessential slice-of-life record, touching on new romance and inside jokes and Gap commercials and the band America and the place America, and treating all those things with care and consideration.

'Me and the Music' lead single 'She Doesn’t Love Me' is, in many ways, the core of the album—a light-feeling song about what it’s like to be queer and trans in America in the 2020s. (It is a strident, driving anthem that doesn’t shy away from pain—and still makes you want to, as Claud sings on the track, put your “beers in the air.”) When Claud wrote the song with Heaven and DiRusso, they felt firmly that it should be a yacht rock song; the demo ended up “lo-fi and indie” anyway. Me and the Music was produced by Claud and John Congleton (Alvvays, St. Vincent) and represents a full-circle moment for Claud, who finally felt, with this record, that they were a confident enough producer to assume a co-producer role (and have since gone on to produce a string of viral singles by Romy Mars). Collaboration is, of course, an essential part of Claud’s work—who are we without our friends? In addition to Claud, they’re one-quarter of Shelly, a band they founded with Clairo, Noa Getzug and Josh Mehling. Me and the Music sees Claud reuniting with their longtime collaborator Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan) on “The Legend.” It explores the feeling of being deeply in love with someone who doesn’t want to be seen with you, says Claud: “It’s sort of about a shitty relationship, and wanting to flaunt love, but not being able to do that,” they say. But, if 'Me and the Music' has a true love song, it’s 'I Owe You', a dream-pop road song that’s devotional and rich. It captures the spirit of 'Me and the Music' as a whole: Taking things day by day, taking stock of what’s around you, and embracing the beautiful things when they arrive. That doesn’t feel so heavy.

Lane Hartley

No Home

'No Home' is the new album by Lane Hartley on Royal Oakie Records. Produced in collaboration with David Hartley of The War On Drugs & Adam McDaniel (Animal Collective, Angel Olsen, Geologist), the album was recorded at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville and features contributions from North Carolina’s tight knit music community–including Mary Lattimore, Seth Kaufman of Floating Action & Dream Sitch, David Hartley, Jack Victor Johnson, and more.

After recording his debut album 'Naming Horses', Lane left Los Angeles and returned home to the Carolinas, eventually landing in Asheville. It wasn’t too long until the songs started flowing and Lane found himself reaching out to Adam McDaniel at Drop of Sun Studios–a vaunted space that’s been at the heart of indie-rock the past few years, bringing to life recent albums from MJ Lenderman, Wednesday, Fust, and more. McDaniel introduced Lane to David Hartley, and what originally started with discussions to record one song quickly turned into a plan to track a whole album live with a six piece band. Once in the studio, co-producer McDaniel encouraged the group to lean on intuition–“All of the players on this record really brought it to life in such a cosmic way. They instilled so much childlike wonder and fun into the making of the album. It inspired me to keep going” says Lane.

Lyrically the album is a collection of vignettes about people who’ve become alienated from their deepest desires of connection, belonging, intimacy, and autonomy–inspired both by Lane’s own life and the lives of people he’s loved. The unique character of the album emerged when Lane made the decision to pair the dark lyrical content with bright & lush arrangements, inspired by Gene Clark’s 'No Other', Neil Young’s 'After the Gold Rush', and Amen Dunes’ 'Love'. In Lane’s words, “The content of the songs got way darker, and my reaction was to make the songs catchier, and to lean harder into the music that influenced me. I wanted each song to feel like a room in a haunted house, with a beautiful garden growing outside”.

Album opener 'I Am Not Ashamed' was inspired by the anti-memoir of actress Barbara Peyton, a 1950’s Hollywood starlet who met an untimely end; “It’s about knowing that whatever you’ve done to survive, you still deserve love” says Lane. “Mother” pairs lyrics about ancestral trauma with the sunshine-pop influence of Colin Blunstone, featuring backing vocals from Lane’s sister Barrett Hartley. “It's about coming to terms with the fact that the people meant to protect us are dealing with their own trauma…”

Meanwhile, 'All Of This Is Yours' and 'Tone Poem' form the spiritual center of the album, an attempt to transmute anger & pain to bittersweet acceptance in the wake of a breakup. “I feel like on the surface this is essentially a breakup album, a lot of these songs are about mourning the end of a relationship and reflecting on what went down. I was falling in love and getting my heart broken, then waking up and driving across the country and doing it all over again.” 'Love Is Not A Song' was inspired by Margo Guryan’s 'Love Songs', pairing bright piano with playful lyrics about an old man who’s been beaten down by life but still believes his greatest love is yet to come. Last but not least, title track 'No Home' sums up the album’s key theme of alienation, “It all goes back to this feeling of wanting to belong to someone or somewhere, wanting to belong in your own body.”

Sing-Sing

The Joy Of Sing-Sing - 25th Anniversary

Some albums simply get better with time. Others wait patiently for the world to catch up. As it celebrates its 25th anniversary, The Joy of Sing-Sing feels less like an overlooked curiosity and more like one of the great lost British albums of its era.

When Lush came to an abrupt end in 1996 following the tragic death of drummer Chris Acland, guitarist and songwriter Emma Anderson wasn't looking to recreate the past. She was searching for an entirely new musical partnership. A mutual friend suggested she meet singer-songwriter Lisa O'Neill (not the Irish folk singer of the same name), who had recently appeared on Locust's Morning Light and was looking for a full-time collaborator. Unknown to either of them, Emma already owned - and loved - the album. Their first meeting, over a drink, sparked an immediate creative connection. Within weeks they were writing together, united by a love of sophisticated pop, dreamlike atmospheres and leftfield electronica. With producer Mark Van Hoen, who had worked with Lisa on Morning Light, they quickly forged the distinctive sound that would become Sing-Sing.

This 25th Anniversary reissue features newly remastered audio by Kevin Vanbergen (Lush, Pixies, Radiohead and numerous 4AD/Beggars artists) and brand-new artwork by Chris Bigg, celebrated for his long creative partnership with Vaughan Oliver.

Available as a limited pressing of 400, the custom Dinked Archive edition is pressed on translucent 'Delicious' orange vinyl, with a signed 12" x 12" print and a CD of bonus tracks.

Remarkably, Sing-Sing never sounded like a post-Lush band. Rather than revisiting shoegaze, Anderson and O'Neill created something altogether more understated and cinematic: shimmering electronic textures, hypnotic melodies and exquisitely restrained vocals that felt equally indebted to classic pop and forward-thinking electronica.

Released in 2001, The Joy of Sing-Sing quietly occupied a world of its own. At a time when British indie was still dominated by post-Britpop guitar bands, Sing-Sing offered something softer, stranger and effortlessly elegant. The album blended luminous electronics, intricate arrangements and timeless songwriting into a record that refused to follow prevailing trends -and as a result, has barely dated.

From the lilting, lullaby-like opener 'Everything' to the brooding pulse of 'Command', The Joy of Sing-Sing unfolds as a richly textured collection of intimate, cinematic songs. Delicate moments such as 'Tegan' sit alongside the noir-like sweep of 'Far Away from Love', while the surreal, off-kilter pop of 'Panda Eyes' adds a playful twist. Beneath the album's shimmering beauty lies an emotional depth that culminates in 'Underage', a moving tribute to Emma Anderson's former Lush bandmate Chris Acland. Critics recognised its quiet brilliance. Uncut hailed it as "a supernova in indie's imaginary universe of perfect pop," while NME praised its "electronic trip-hoppy vibe," describing Lisa O'Neill's crystalline voice as leading listeners "siren-like into the twilight netherworld where The Carpenters commune with Portishead." Q celebrated its "airy, breathy dreampop" and called it "a plaintive and persuasive debut that promises much."

Time has only strengthened the album's reputation. Long cherished by those who discovered it first time around, The Joy of Sing-Sing has steadily been recognised as one of the hidden gems of early-2000s British independent music. In today's landscape - where dream-pop, shoegaze and beautifully crafted alternative pop have found a new generation of listeners - it sounds remarkably contemporary.

More than twenty-five years after it was first recorded, The Joy of Sing-Sing finally receives the wider recognition it has always deserved: an elegant, emotionally resonant collection of songs that feels every bit as fresh, immersive and quietly captivating today as it did on its original release.

William Basinski

Passing The Cup Of Sorrows

In the realm of past-life regression hypnotherapy, there is a concept known as “Life Between Lives,” wherein a sacred exchange of energy occurs between two souls in the spirt world, helping a spirit fully understand and forgive a being who hurt them in a past life. This exchange – called “passing the cup of sorrows” – became the unexpected inspiration for William Basinski’s first new album in six years.

While sinking deeper into the daily abyss of our collective negativity bias, William Basinski stumbled upon a video describing the spiritual hypnotherapy exercise known as “passing the cup of sorrows.” Fixed on the glow of a screen that projected mounting anxiety and cynicism at a seemingly interminable pace, Basinski found the testimonials of this fascinating therapeutic practice to be profoundly moving. He sat at his piano, translating the transformation of those traumatic memories of past lives into cathartic tears of the present day.

Channeling the quiet curiosity and asymmetrical patterns of pioneering 20th Century composer, Morton Feldman, Passing the Cup of Sorrows is a single 40-minute piece that employs a solitary piano and subtle electronics to truly haunting effect. It recalls fragments of traumatic memories and projects them as fractals in a slow-moving soft focus that’s as eerie as it is enlightened.

GDP

Cross Off Matthew

“Slide in the party like three monkeys wearing a trench,” GDP says in the opening seconds of 'Cross Off Matthew', his first solo album in over a decade. The line is indicative of the New Jersey emcee/ producer’s relationship with music, one that’s ebbed and flowed throughout his career and eclectic discography. Entirely self-produced, 'Cross Off Matthew' feels like a reintroduction as well as an expansion of what makes the cult rapper so beloved. GDP came up in the respective punk, hardcore, and skateboarding scenes of New Jersey, roots that inspired his DIY approach to making hip-hop. He applied a decidedly punk ethos to his brand of neo-boom bap on early releases like 2009’s 'Realistic Expectations' and 2011’s 'Useless Eaters', albums that celebrated his youthful indiscretions but also signaled an old soul lying beneath the surface.

He opted to release them on punk/indie labels (including Run For Cover and Ride The Fury Records) instead of more traditional hip-hop outlets, and along with an ambitious touring schedule, he carved out a dedicated fanbase throughout the early 2010’s. 'Cross Off Matthew' is a slow-cooked labor of love, born out of taking enough time away from something to understand the journey with greater perspective and appreciation.“I’m older, arguably wiser, but that creative fire stayed with me,” he says. “I wanted to make something that felt nuanced, something that I could feel proud of.” Throughout the album, the production toggles between foreboding and facetious just as deftly as his bars. Tracks like 'Island In The Sky' and 'Location Therapy' make rap confetti out of caustic guitars and glaring distortion, while 'Seroquel' and 'Rock For Light', (the latter a nod to NJ rap royalty, The Outsidaz) embrace GDP’s signature blend of East Coast hip-hop and punk sensibilities, with lyrics that highlight the sharp wit and heady philosophizing that he made his name on. GDP examines vices, interpersonal relationships, the collective dread of late-stage capitalism as well as the pitfalls and rewards of trying to lead a creative life throughout it all. The wiseman that peaked out from beneath the shield of debauchery on his early releases has now come to the forefront, as GDP’s trademark humor and commentary feel refined by years of life lived experience.

Car Seat Headrest

Teen Of Denial: Joe’s Story

'Teen of Denial: Joe’s Story' is a freshly reimagined take on Car Seat Headrest’s beloved breakout, 'Teens of Denial', now celebrating its 10th anniversary.

On the original album, Toledo often used the name “Joe” as a pseudonym – a sly homage to Daniel Johnston. Revisiting 'Teens...' in the run-up to its 10th birthday, he felt called to give Joe a unique backstory and began tweaking the album to tell that tale. The group returned to the studio with 'Teens...' producer Steve Fisk to update accordingly – tweaking lyrics, revising arrangements, and recording new songs in the “Denial-style,” including ‘Optimistic Son” and the anthemic ‘Joe Drives Again’. The result retains 'Teens’ dark edge and youthful cynicism, but allows a bit of hard-won compassion into the mix.

Deep South Soul / Mellow Man / Manhattan Project / Reign Of Rhythm

Deep Soul EP

Marc Cotterell shows his A&R class here with another brilliantly assembled various artists EP on his Plastik People label, which is essential for fans of timeless house and garage fusions. The record kicks off with Deep South Soul's 'Harmonica Man' as remixed by Mellow Man and it has a touch of the bluesy Saint Germain to its lithe deep house and spoken words. Mellow Man then drops the 90s-coded 'So Deep', with warm organ chords and bubbly drums that have a New York swagger to them. Manhattan Project turns up the heat with a raw, hardcore garage-house swinger in the form of 'Turn That Up' and Reign Of Rhythm layers up neat stabs and leggy kick drums on the sleazy 'Cum Inside'. Essential and effective house.

Amsterdam-based multidisicplinary arts collective and, in this case, ambient electronica-producing duo Wanderwelle created several of the biggest releases that Silent Season have enjoyed to date, this previously digital-only single being one of the very biggest. The public's been clamouring for a vinyl release of this one for an entire decade now, so the label have finally obliged. Four tracks here catch Alexander Bartels and Phil van Dulm in reflective but lively chilled techno mode and from the gliding depths of 'Leaving Port Logan' to the eerie siren song of 'A Watery Grave' there are shimmering subaquatic atmospherics aplenty but also pulsing, underplayed rhythms too. Liquid gold.

British Birds

Murmurate, Oscillate

Murmuration is the low hum made by vast, beautifully choreographed flocks of starlings as they simultaneously flap their wings and take to the sky. Some people say that the frequency of this unique, rumbling, oscillating sound can cure diseases...

One of the most exciting live bands in the UK, British Birds combine the garage-punk energy of Billy Childish, the wry English sophistication of XTC and the witty pop inventiveness of The Lovely Eggs. Like a murmurating flock of starlings, they create a unique sound, and might even be able to cure diseases.

Based in Chorley, Lancashire, British Birds are a resolutely DIY band. Bobby records and mixes all the music; Emma creates all the artwork. Their first two albums were self-released, selling hundreds of copies at gigs and at a few chosen record stores. British Birds didn’t wait for permission to take flight. They just got on with it. Their songs are sophisticated, hard-hitting, and very skilful. It may be DIY, but it’s big and it’s ambitious.

‘Murmurate, Oscillate’ kicks off with 'Lie Down With Dogs, Stand Up With Fleas', a rousing expression of exasperation at our passivity in the face of lame authority. British Birds are acute observers of the English political scene, shrouding their observations in humour and surrealism. 'Polka Dot Eyes' is another piece of sharp social observation: it portrays Lancashire lads – friends from school – who join the Army and return home physically and mentally damaged. The song is simultaneously disturbing, funny and catchy as hell. From the fog of disinformation and doubt that surrounds us all in 2020s Britian, British Birds embrace the darkness, but with wit and verve – no slogans, no easy answers – and with an energy that helps us escape the mundanity of a declining island. This might all sound a bit bleak, but it’s not: every single one of the songs on this album has a chorus as big as a house.

There are personal songs too: 'Scary Movies' is a poignant description of Bobby and Emma’s grandfather, who delighted in showing them horror films when they were kids – giving them sneak previews of the darkness they’d come to embrace as adults; 'Just Like Them' is a celebration of introversion: it might not be fun, but it’s better than being an idiot. (Paradoxically, any other introverts who hear this song will feel impelled to join in in the chorus.) 'Blame Game' and 'Thunder Claps' examine the darkness inherent in relationships: there is always an impending storm, if you recognise the low hum of the imminent thunder. Once again: the choruses of these songs confound the melancholy sentiment.

You’ll get the same impression if you see British Birds live: Bobby’s ferocious guitar and dark lyrics are counterpointed with Emma’s sometimes haunting, sometimes playful vocal responses and insistent rhythms. You’ll be swept away by the energy of a band who don’t know the meaning of limits. And as the songs get darker and darker the smile on your face gets wider and wider.

The core members of British Birds are siblings Bobby and Emma Townson, working from their HQ-cum-nest in Chorley. Drums are by Dominic Lawson (apart from Michael Aindley on ‘Just Like Them’). Bass is by James Robinson.

Dummy

Do You Love The Color Of The Sky?

On Dummy’s new album, 'do you love the color of the sky?', the Los Angeles-based 5-piece deliver a breathtaking piece of work that introduces new textures and rhythms to their already varied and refined catalog. For the band’s third album, and first for new label home Polyvinyl, the group split time between self-recording at their home studio as well as Studio 22, linking up with frequent collaborator and engineer Joo-Joo Ashworth (Corridor, Automatic, Spiral XP). The band focused on intentionality and experimentation, exploring downtempo dance beats and electronic music while pushing the guitar as far as they could, using new self-sampling and processing techniques. Percussionist Alex Ewell’s overall sound design and production skills can be heard across the album, with layered drum sounds and rhythmic tremolo techniques shining throughout. Tracks like 'Full Spectrum Dominance' and 'Alluvial Fan' showcase the band’s tasteful pop sensibilities, while closing track 'Heaven’s What You Make Of It' features perhaps the strongest vocal delivery yet from vocalist/keyboardist Emma Maatman. Additionally, the dynamic exchange between guitarists Joe Trainor and Nathan O’Dell is absolutely gorgeous, adding a new layer of immersion and directness that is unlike anything the band has done before. The result is Dummy’s most ethereal and sincere record to date, with more feminine and delicate undertones that sit beautifully alongside the gritty and noisy textures the band has become known for.

Gently Tender

This Was Once Fields

'This Was Once Fields' is Gently Tender's first new music since 2023; sonically inspired by the landscapes of the rolling hills and rugged moors of the British countryside, the band’s stirring indie rock sound is built from lush harmonies and pastoral melodies, touching on elements of folk, punk and soul. Seeking escape from the city in the relief of the great outdoors, front man Fryer would head out from the studio to the green belt of North London to simply walk for miles upon miles, often until the last moments of light disappeared into the dusk."The view of London from afar at nighttime was what really ignited a spark in me. I would reflect on my life and myself as I exist inside the city I've lived in for my entire life, that I've loved and fallen out of love with over again. The city does weigh on me heavily but it's not easy to leave a place you’ve loved forever. A collective effort since its very inception, Gently Tender opened its arms to musicians Francesca Brierley (multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who also makes music as heka) and Evie Hilyer-Ziegler (with whom Sam had played alongside in folk group Broadside Hacks and brings flourishes of violin and flute) to join former Palma Violets Sam Fryer, Pete Mayhew and Will Doyle, plus guitarist Adam Brown

Hannah Peel

Underland (Original Film Soundtrack)

Hannah Peel’s 'Underland' draws a glorious and vivid electronic map of the ground below, and what comes buried beneath that ground. Melodies that feel like they’ve been lifted directly from the soil merge with rhythm tracks that could be insects burrowing caves through the undergrowth, and gorgeous ambient echoes intertwined with spectral voices… these elements in Hannah’s hands are the true sound of the underground.

Hannah’s album is the soundtrack to the new Underland film directed by Rob Petit, a cinematic documentary that draws inspiration from Robert Macfarlane’s 2019 book of the same name.

Hannah Peel on 'Underland': “I had read Robert’s book back in 2019, and even included some words from it for my 2022 album ‘The Unfolding’. The chance to actually compose for the book's film in return though, beautiful synchronicity! Scoring for these astronauts of the underworld, those sacred ancient cave systems, the mysteries of the universe’s secrets, exploring what would they actually sound like? Those haunting descents that remind us of our planet’s past and future, asking us to look deep into our ancestors' stories and evaluate where we will go next, made it a profound film to work on. I used ancient Mayan Pod Trumpets and an iron age horn called a Carnyx mixed with baroque choir, string orchestra and synths to bring to life a score that had to combine mythology, technology and possibility.”

Manchester Orchestra

I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child - 20th Anniversary Edition

What's most striking about Manchester Orchestra's debut full-length, 'I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child', isn't how much the Atlanta-based group have evolved in the two decades since its release, but how much of their identity was already there from the very beginning. Recorded without a label, outside expectations or even a surplus of material, the album found the band embracing spontaneity over perfection and, in the process, establishing the emotional and sonic hallmarks that would become their defining quality.

The organ that swells throughout the album-opening 'Wolves at Night' recalls the band's Southern gospel upbringing, but when laid atop a dirty, downtuned guitar riff indebted to '90s fuzz, it creates competing impulses that ripple through every corner of the record. Songs that begin as near-whispers swell into walls of sound, while the droning atmosphere of 'Where Have You Been?' and 'I Can Barely Breathe' hint at the cinematic scale of the group's future even as quieter moments like 'I Can Feel Your Pain' and 'Sleeper 1972' elevate a delicate vulnerability that's long been the heart of Andy Hull's songwriting. Across the album, Hull's words arrive with a startling maturity for a 19-year-old, yet they're cut with the wide-eyed urgency of someone experiencing adulthood in real time. As he grapples with spirituality, romance, identity and mortality — moving effortlessly between existential dread and full-hearted adoration, private reflection and a yearning to understand the world around him — he writes with remarkable honesty, never dulling the rawest edges of his emotions or worrying how they might be received.

It's that transparency and fearlessness that helped Virgin transcend the scene that first embraced it. Word of mouth quickly carried the album far beyond the underground.

Sean Wilentz

Bob Dylan: Through The Open Window, 1956–1963

Bob Dylan’s early work and emergence in the Greenwich Village music scene come to life through exclusive and unseen images and revelatory reporting by a bestselling historian and Dylan aficionado. Bob Dylan: Through the Open Window, 1956–1963 is a revelatory journey through Dylan’s early life and meteoric rise, written and conceived by acclaimed historian and Bob Dylan in America author Sean Wilentz. An illustrated account of Dylan and his early work, from his origins in Minnesota to his time in Greenwich Village to the concert at Carnegie Hall that marked the end of the beginning of his career, the book traces his meteoric rise with expert commentary and an astounding collection of rare photographs and ephemera, many never before published.

The text is a substantial expansion of Wilentz’s liner notes to Dylan’s bootleg album box set of the same name, which offers a unique aural record—rare outtakes, informal tapes, and the full Carnegie Hall concert. Here the narrative is enriched with additional commentary and special sections that illuminate both well-known and hidden facets of Dylan’s early career. Wilentz, who grew up the son of an independent bookseller in the heart of the Greenwich Village bohemia, brings an insider’s perspective to Dylan’s arrival on the New York City music scene in the early sixties, tracing the transformation of traditional folk tunes into enduring classics like “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” He connects past and present, inviting readers—whether lifelong Dylan fanatics or those just discovering his story—to experience the artist’s first important strides and emergence as one of the greatest songwriters America has produced.

Bob Dylan: Through the Open Window, 1956–1963 is an essential addition to any Dylan collection—and the perfect entry point for new fans ready to explore the roots of a cultural icon.

Calibro 35

Ellroy VS L.A. - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Cinematic Visionaries Calibro 35 and Noir Master James Ellroy Pay Homage to L.A. with a Pure Crime-Funk Original Soundtrack.

There are collaborations that feel inevitable like they were waiting to happen in some shadowed corner of culture. The union between Italian cinematic funk visionaries Calibro 35 and internationally acclaimed master of noir fiction and New York Times bestselling author James Ellroy is undoubtedly one of them.

When Calibro 35 were invited to compose the original soundtrack for Francesco Zippel’s documentary 'Ellroy vs L.A.', they didn’t simply write music for film. They stepped directly into Ellroy’s universe the most dangerous corners of American crime fiction and discovered, to no one’s surprise, that its darkness felt strangely familiar.

Twelve brand new tracks of cinematic crime funk, psychedelia, and hypnotic groove that don’t accompany Ellroy’s world so much as inhabit it. The soundtrack’s move through Ellroy’s fictional and real-world mythologies with deliberate precision. Stylistically, the album finds Calibro 35 in their most natural yet most cinematic state: crime funk, psychedelia, and hypnotic groove pushed into darker, more narrative-driven territory by the weight of Ellroy’s world. From the gloomy, suspense-laden groove of the opener Black Dahlia to the evocative closing piece Moonlight Sonative, the album unfolds as a complete cinematic arc, showcasing Calibro 35 at their very best. L.A. Confidential delivers a super-suspenseful, thrilling tension that feels like a chase through neon-lit streets, while Riots erupts into explosive cinematic funk, capturing chaos and urban unrest in full force.

'LSD on Sunset Boulevard' drifts into a hazy, instrumental soul journey psychedelic, warm, and disorienting, like a late-night hallucination of the city itself. #The Big Nowhere (Part I & II)# expands the narrative into a slow-burning, atmospheric descent, unfolding like a two-act crime saga. 'Welcome to the Land of Vacation and Probation' hits with kick-ass, uptempo crime-funk madness, urgent and relentless in its propulsion, while 'White Jazz' is a mood of suspended, noir-infused jazz tension cool, shadowy, and unresolved. Together, the tracks map Los Angeles as a fractured yet hypnotic landscape suspended between glamour and violence, beauty and decay, myth and reality.

Jensen McRae

I Don't Know How But They Found Me...Again!

'I Don't Know How But They Found Me...Again!' is the deluxe version of Jensen McRae’s critically acclaimed 2025 album 'I Don’t Know How But They Found Me!'

Alongside the original album’s tracklist, the deluxe release features twelve new songs widely available for the first time: stripped-back versions of songs written before the recording of 'I Don’t Know How But They Found Me!' had finished, live favourites heard on McRae’s recent headline tours and festivals appearances, a new version of 'Mother Wound' featuring Maisie Peters as well as new tracks elsewhere featuring contributions from Brandi Carlile and Brittany Spencer.

On the new tracks, McRae explains: “There were so many songs I wrote after writing but before we finished recording the second album that still felt like they lived in this world--very much coming to terms with the reality that no one was going to save me from myself, and that healing is something I would ultimately have to do on my own. I think the sparseness aptly reflects the solitude that is required of that kind of healing--although there are of course a couple songs that required a team to put together and feel right.”

From the very beginning, fans have fallen in love with Jensen McRae for the sharp, evocative and clear-eyed songwriting. "The most profound choices of my life often felt like things I did before I was ready to do, and I had to grow into them,” says McRae. Her songs have a way of giving shape to these leaps, cliff jumps and trust falls, and on her 2025 album, 'I Don’t Know How But They Found Me!', Jensen McRae went further than ever, evolving from a promising young artist to a fully grown songwriter and star.

An avid journaler, McRae has been breathlessly documenting her existence since she was 18. Her first album, 'Are You Happy Now?', was a mission statement for the artist who grew up an automatic outsider: a Black Jewish girl from Los Angeles, hellbent on making folk music in spite of the world's attempts to box her into other, more stereotypically Black genres. McRae looked to her songwriting heroes (Alicia Keys, Carole King, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder) to build a sonic world all her own. As her audience grew and with myriad doors began unlocking, it "became the record of my coming-of-age. But it was a quiet coming-of-age, one that mostly took place inside my own head."

Next, 'I Don’t Know How But They Found Me!' took place against the backdrop of romantic turbulence and McRae's rapidly growing audience. "I had never been in love before," McRae said. "Not really. And then I had two life-altering relationships back to back in my early twenties. This album was primarily an exploration about how love and intimacy knock the wind out of you, can take your legs out from under you." She has also had multiple viral moments, including in the run up to writing 'I Don’t Know How But They Found Me!', when McRae posted a solo verse and chorus online, little more than a piece of a demo, and it took off. Covers, duets, and an avalanche of new fans followed (including the likes of Justin Bieber, Stormzy, and Dan Nigro to name a few); the song was the beginning of "Massachusetts", which would become her first Dead Oceans release.

McRae ventured to North Carolina to record 'I Don't Know How But They Found Me!' with Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, Suki Waterhouse, Bon Iver), also enlisting the help of Hippo Campus's Nathan Stocker on guitar, Bon Iver's Matthew McCaughan on drums, and her younger brother, Holden McRae, on keys. "It felt like summer camp. None of us wanted to leave," McRae said. "It was such a joyous ten days of pure creative expression." In the process, I Don't Know How But They Found Me! found its footing--a vibrating, urgent collection of songs moored by razor-sharp lyrical specificity and timeless pop melodies.

The unusual title of her second album? Taken from a line in McRae's favorite film, Back to the Future. A key protagonist survives a hail of bullets, and the image resonated with McRae. “I really connected with the idea that I could've easily collapsed beneath the weight of what happened to me, but I didn't. I didn't even know it,” McRae says, “but I was bulletproof the whole time."

Jess Williamson

A Mile South Of Heaven

Jess Williamson has built one of the most distinctive voices in American music — crystalline, acrobatic, and unmistakably her own. The Texas-born, Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist has spent the better part of a decade carving out her own lane at the intersection of indie folk, alt-country, and a deeply personal confessional tradition. Now, on her seventh studio album, she steps into new creative territory.

Produced by Shooter Jennings, the album finds Williamson's artistry meeting its ideal counterpart. Jennings brings a deep-roots sensibility and studio instinct honed across decades, and together they've crafted twelve songs that honor the grit and sweep of classic country while remaining unmistakably contemporary. Williamson's voice remains the central instrument: front and center, emotionally unguarded, carrying the kind of weight that demands a room go quiet. But with Jennings at the helm, the sonic canvas is richer and more expansive than anything in her catalog to date — full of texture, warmth, and that ineffable Nashville-meets-Laurel-Canyon atmosphere that lives somewhere between Linda Ronstadt and Waylon Jennings.

Gnod

Chronicles Of Gnowt (Vol 2)

Two decades have passed in the land of Gnod, yet the psychic travelogue only becomes more enthralling as it goes on. And whilst this band has flourished via dauntless conviction, hive-mind magic and a fierce and uncompromising spirit, one ingredient has served as a crucial fuel for the fire – the monolithic singularity of the riff.

This second chapter of Gnod’s sort-of-anniversary trilogy also originates in the same six day sessions as the first, at Hellfire Studios near Dublin with producer Spud Murphy (Lankum, Black Midi etc). Yet the focus this time is on the transcendental heaviness and repetition that the band have often used as a primary fulcrum of their approach. This volume captures the sound of strings flayed, throats shredded, skins punished by the organic chemistry of this formidably powerful band in a room.

The results are amongst the most fearsome and kinetic material that Gnod have summoned to date. As has often been the case for a band heavily driven by serendipity and intuition, the best plan is no plan at all. “We find quite regularly that spontaneity and the no thought approach works better than over analysis and detailed planning” clarifies the band's Chris Haslam

Maximal yet minimal, claustrophobic yet expansive, free in approach yet mercilessly disciplined in their intensity – Gnod like every truly great band are a mass of contradictions. On 'Chronicles Of Gnowt (Vol 2)', this thunderous paradox has never sounded fiercer. To paraphrase Nietzsche: “Is man merely a mistake of Gnod's? Or Gnod merely a mistake of man?”

Danielle Ponder

Everything Has Changed

Danielle Ponder is done waiting for a future version of herself to arrive. Now, the Rochester-born, Atlanta-rooted singer-songwriter is unapologetically living in the moment. This realization powers 'Everything Has Changed', Ponder's anticipated sophomore album (and debut on Dead Oceans in partnership with Phoebe Bridgers).

The LP is Ponder’s most self-assured statement to date: it was crafted through a period of immense transformation as the beloved vocalist propelled from being a lawyer to a full-fledged musical powerhouse. That artistic freedom threads the album, as heard on lead single, 'Power', which serves as both a declaration and an affirmation for the Black diaspora. Other highlights include the revelatory 'Sun and Moon', the towering blues ballad 'God of You', and the devastatingly vulnerable 'Open Windows'.

'Everything Has Changed' dismantles the stories Ponder once told herself and finds peace in what remains—all themes that have shaped much of her journey.

Music was always a constant presence throughout her life, but practicality initially took over in adulthood. While performing with her family’s band and later developing her own projects, Ponder pursued a legal career focused on criminal justice reform. It wasn’t until her late 30s that she allowed herself to seriously imagine music as more than a side pursuit. In 2021, at age 39, she finally took the leap, leaving law behind to pursue her artistry full-time.

The gamble paid off: she signed her first record deal in 2022, becoming a trailblazer on her own unusual path to worldwide renown. Her debut album 'Some of Us Are Brave' introduced Ponder as one of soul music’s most compelling new voices, thanks to singles like 'Someone Like You', 'Roll The Credits', and the empowering title track. The LP earned critical acclaim along with dozens of major sync placements, including the latest Apple campaign for the iPhone 16 Pro. She’s since had four major TV appearances, including Jimmy Kimmel Live! Ponder has also sold out shows across North America and Europe, including festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Afropunk, and the Montreux Jazz Festival.

But if that album documented her arrival, 'Everything Has Changed' documents her evolution.

Imperial Teen

All Over You

Beneath the sleek, confident guitar line that powers 'Overdrive', the lead single of 'All Over You', another guitar marks the time more impatiently, as if the groove its locked into is the timebomb- tightness of a pre-hookup heartbeat. Its energy isn’t nervous — after all, it’s hard to be nervous with Will Schwartz cooing come-ons like “I just wanna get you in the bed / Light you up like a cigarette” in your ear — but it is urgent. Excited. Titillated.

That’s the word that best describes the prospect of a new Imperial Teen record: titillating. They come out every five or six years, each new album acting as, to quote Roddy Bottum, “an episodic piece of where we are now, where the world is now, who we have become, and the geography of our collective consciousness.” There is considerable distance between Imperial Teen, its members — Bottum (guitars, keyboards, vocals), Schwartz (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Jone Stebbins (bass, vocals), and Lynn Truell (drums, vocals) — having made lives for themselves in different cities, but the collective consciousness that exists between them makes distance and time seem immaterial to the listener.

Time, especially time together, is not immaterial to Imperial Teen: it is precious. “For the last few records,” Stebbins explains, “the process has been similar. We live great distances away from each other, so initially, we get together to collaborate, write, and create. When we have enough material, we reconvene to record. Both scenarios, creating and recording, take multiple trips, sometimes with big lapses of time in between due to our various schedules.” Bottum concurs: “The biggest challenge in writing and recording is the distance between us, but the longing and desire and the ultimate coming together becomes more potent as a result.”

'All Over You' is a triumph of maximized moments together, four people bringing the force of their personalities to bear on years of built-up ideas. Title track 'All Over You', initially built over the computer, gained its charming sneer in the studio, where Stebbins’ buoyant, fuzzed out bassline added bounce to the song’s punchy, sloganeering lyrics, a perfect set-up for Truell to drive the song home, screaming the last line of the chorus, “We’ve got nothing to do,” like a rallying cry for a generation that’s been given nothing and told to deny themselves everything. “In my head,” Truell says, “I just went back to punk, to that feeling of prowling around looking for anything to do and being so mad about how boring everything is that you just have to yell.” The track had an attitude, it had an unexpected texture thanks to Truell’s playing improvised percussion, but her scream is what took it to the next level, transforming it into a signature Imperial Teen song.

One of Imperial Teen’s less magical concerns on 'All Over You' is the effect capitalism has on the creation of art. This expresses itself in the headspinning rush of music industry success and disappointment that plays out in “Hands All Up,” and also in Imperial Teen’s sound. 'All Over You' features the band’s most expansive, textured palette to date, and much of it’s steeped in — bubblegum music and boy/girl harmonies, electro beats and grungy distortion, power pop mall anthems and kiss-off lyricism — has been dismissed, at one point or another, as a fad. Time, of course, has proven otherwise, and 'All Over You' makes a case for Imperial Teen as four of that time’s architects, inheriting, preserving, and pushing the boundaries of what pop music can be from one song to the next.

“We want to make people dance and think and feel,” says Schwartz. In all of those ambitions, 'All Over You' crushes, brought to life by four musicians who found each other in the clubs of San Francisco over three decades ago and have remained family ever since. It is less a return from hiatus than a broadcast from the sonic utopia Imperial Teen has long ruled over, where the music is bratty and sexy and the parties don’t stop until everyone’s found euphoria. A raveup for mind, body, and soul, best enjoyed in a dark room packed with as many sweaty bodies as possible

William D Drake

Moulded By Industry

'Moulded By Industry' is William D Drake's six album, his first for ten years and a return to the richly layered sonic texture and epic production of his majestic Briny Hooves. He is joined by long time collaborators James Larcombe, Dean Gaisburgh-Watkyn and Steve Jackson, with the addition of a new crew member, singer Treana Morris. Moving on from his nine years of pianistic and compositional duties in Cardiacs, Drake's solo work has been known for its synthesis of Mellotron-driven grandeur with a surreal playfulness.

But the deep heart of Drake's work is in its powerful evocation of the landscape of the countryside and its connection with love, longing and loss. To this end, his own enigmatic lyrics have rubbed shoulders with poetry drawn from across the centuries. From obscure sources such as Samuel Spree to the poetry of Thomas Hardy and Rupert Brooke, his settings make old words shimmer with human emotion. The texture of his music also reflects an inspirational lack of concern for distances of time. The earthy breath of his harmonium is interwoven with tones teased from archaic instruments by James Larcombe – hurdy-gurdy, dulcitone and melodeon. But Drake's sound-world is no museum. Here, ancient words and the timbres of ancient instruments become one with the rush of a moment's emotion.

'Moulded By Industry' brings this approach a new sonic depth, intoxicatingly shaded by Treana's lush vocal harmonies and underpinned by Steve's rhythm. Dean's evocative guitar textures give an oceanic sense, tinged with Americana, recalling his work with Drake in their alt country band Nervous. These many layers of sound are drawn together into vivid soundscapes by the painterly mixing of producer Ott. Renowned for his work in electronica and dub, Ott's two decades of experience working with artists such as Sinéad O'Connor, the Orb and Brian Eno bring an organic touch here, more akin to the elemental forces of land and sky than grid electricity. More than any of Drake's previous albums, 'Moulded By Industry' reignites the emotional urgency of old texts.

The gorgeous single 'The Flickering Shade', haunted by glimmers of lost possibilities, is set from words by Thomas Ashe. Turtledove's heady evocation of the blissful madness of love sets the words of an anonymous 17th century ballad. above all, the album is a testament to Drake's love of John Clare, 'The Northamptonshire Peasant Poet'. Clare wrote as the centuries old process of enclosure, in which wild and common land was appropriated commercially, was accelerating. His works, rather than representing simple sentimentality, are passionate love poems to the landscape and cries from a soul reeling from the creeping unfamiliarity devouring it. This sense of the tension between passion and ill-ease has its most potent expression in Green Shadows. The brooding, slow-tempo energy of Steve's drums drive a horizon-wide lament, alternately lulled by Treana's vocal textures and made restless by James' plaintive hurdy-gurdy and the emotive pull of Dean's slide guitar. The present moment is also a time of enclosure, both metaphorically, as our lives, memories and emotions are drawn into the commercial space of social media, and literally as land and water are swallowed by vast data centre developments.

'Moulded By Industry' celebrates a regained sense of being in the moment in the landscape, in life and in love. The album closes with the utterly delightful single 'Love In The Universe'. The kind of song that could make a cynic use the word 'joyous' without irony, this Harry Nilsson-esque romp reassures us, with a wink, that 'in an infinite universe everything has its place ... even the human race'.

Horse Jumper Of Love

Horse Jumper Of Love - 10th Anniversary Edition

Ten years ago, Horse Jumper of Love released their self-titled debut, one that not only launched their career but also inspired a generation of shoegaze artists to come.

Recorded in a mill space studio by future longtime collaborator Bradford Krieger and first released in 2016 (before a re-issue by Run For Cover in 2017), Horse Jumper of Love introduced listeners to the band’s unique strain of expertly crafted minimalism and haunting lyricism. Tracks like 'Orange Peeler' and 'Ugly Brunette' capture a gritty melancholy and existentialism that is both youthful and timeless, angst-ridden and sincere. Now, a decade later, 'Horse Jumper of Love' remains a beloved cult classic and a touchstone of the band’s continually developing brand of glacial, grungy indie rock.

This 10 Year Anniversary Deluxe Edition LP features new tri-fold packaging with collaged ephemera from singer and songwriter Dimitri Giannopoulos’ years in Boston while writing the record, a 20-page sewn-in booklet featuring never before seen photos and drawings, and handwritten tablature for the record’s original 9 songs. Disc one includes the original album fully re-mastered, and the brand new second disc features 13 bonus tracks recorded between the years of 2013-2015, mostly by Dimitri at home on a Tascam Portastudio, including single 'Heathers (2013)' which was an early version of what would later become 'i love you very much forever' and other never before heard demos, b-sides, and alternate versions of the original songs.

Jamie T

Ghosts (100 Days Of Morning)

'Ghosts (100 Days of Morning)' sees the return of one of Britain’s most beloved artists, Jamie T. A confronting 11-track collection of former ghosts brought to life during a difficult time in his life, 'Ghosts (100 Days of Morning)' nods to growing up and leaving youth behind, love, loss and the brittle nostalgia of halcyon indie-era nights. 'Ghosts...' is as much about letting go as it is reclaiming his identity.

The album, produced in part by Jamie, James Dring (Loyle Carner / Blur) & Hugo White (The Maccabees), includes the single ‘3310’ alongside the introspective album closer ‘Tallahassee’ and Damon Albarn collaboration ‘Cocktail’

Liam Inscoe-Jones

Songs In The Key Of MP3 : The New Icons Of The Internet Age

It's 2013. You're a teenager squinting at your laptop in the dead of night, flicking between iTunes and YouTube and PirateBay.Endless reams of artists unspool at the click of a button. New forms of musical discovery open up before your very eyes.

This evolving digital landscape exists beyond the radio, HMV and even the most extensive record collection. You've entered a whole new world and, suddenly, just about everything feels possible. In Songs in the Key of MP3: The New Icons of the Internet Age, Liam Inscoe-Jones explores five contemporary artists who broke the old rules of sound, style and the music industry at large: Devonté Hynes (of Blood Orange), FKA Twigs, Oneohtrix Point Never, Earl Sweatshirt and SOPHIE.

Each began their careers as obscure outsiders but, over time, they helped to re-shape pop culture in their image. Through these five extraordinary figures and an eclectic supporting cast of dozens more, Inscoe-Jones paints a picture of the sonic landscape of the last ten years, exploring the influence of their dazzling music on pop culture, the internet and ourselves. An unorthodox mix of criticism, biography and music history - and featuring interviews with the likes of Caroline Polachek, Daniel Lopatin and Nicolás Jaar - Songs in the Key of MP3 is a book of endless curiosity and wonder; a salutary attempt to define pop culture in a fast and ephemeral age.

Mark Blake

Pink Floyd Shine On : The Definitive Oral History

The definitive oral history of Pink Floyd as told by friends, associates, family members and the band themselves through exclusive, never before published interviews. Bestselling music author Mark Blake has been an associate and collaborator of Pink Floyd for over thirty years. Shine On takes on the behemoth task of capturing the most comprehensive history of the band ever compiled, drawing on huge amounts of new, archive and unpublished interview material with Gilmour, Waters, Mason and Wright.

No other writer has interviewed the members of Pink Floyd as often nor as thoroughly, which is candidly apparent in this textured, gripping and consistently surprising biography. For the first time, the band's story is told as an oral history with each chapter presented through the words of the band, their friends, contemporaries and supporting musicians. The accessible structure and high level of detail means that the narrative is both approachable to casual readers and magnetic to the committed.

Shine On is comprised of a significant amount of previously unpublished material, including a rare interview with Rosemary Breen lamenting that her younger brother Roger, aka Syd Barrett, should have never become a musician as well as exclusive new interviews with Pink Floyd's Nick Mason and Guy Pratt, reflecting on their enduring legacy and rather more complicated recent twists and turns in the bands story. Shine on is a forensic retelling of one of the most turbulent and enduring groups in rock music history, a complex history that only someone as skilled and insightful as Blake can navigate.
