8, 9,10 And 9,10,11 From Gung Ho 1, 2, 3D

Interesting compilation of percussion, bells, chimes and other assorted resonating mallet instruments featuring four star players of the current underground entheogenic scene. From Scratch is Don McGlashan and Philip Dadson, and their contributions, versions of Gung Ho's "8,9,10" and "9,10,11" are two, resonating, kettle drum-styled pieces that wouldn't sound out of place on Sued either. More ethereal and mood-enhancing than your tradition African percussion tracks, both of these glimmer and shimmer like crystallized moisture caught by the sun's rays as it shines through the rainforest. Swedish nu-psych-tribal warriors Goat offer up an alternative interpretation on the B-side. Switching the drums around for a more wooden aesthetic - sounding more like a burning hot peyote ritual than the more inter-dimensional, ayahuasca journey previous to it. Florian Meyer dons his Don't DJ alias as he also gets to grips with Gung Ho's two numbers - rolling out a very typical, but nonetheless arresting form of his percussive bubblers. Finally, Utena Kobayashi Group are new to me, and discogs too, it seems, and actually offer the most varied and different rendition on the comp. Slowing things down and introducing a slow, mournful violin line, percussion is reduced to a steady pace and sparse contents, relying on a synthesized conga pattern to bolster the warped and ethereal atmospheric backing. It's another heady, intoxicating piece, reminding me most of a Mexican mushroom ceremony, fluid, interconnected energy forms interacting as one. Totally out there and highly recommended!
