I wouldn't necessarily have said that this, the second week of February is where I would find my ambient listening for the next couple months, but I can see the rippling ambient folk of Asger's beautiful 'Julia' and the stunning environmental drift of Aus & The Humble (out of Japan's legendary Flau records) both proving enduring listens.
Now I'm not the biggest Beck fan around, I don't dislike him I just don't know that much (I did like that song with the Microphone and all of Sea Change, the only album I've really heard in it's entirety) BUT I do remember watching Little Miss Sunshine and thinking how perfect his rendition of The Korgi's 'Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime' was. Well, it still is and it's here with a host of other unheard gems, and it's all gold.
The new Charli XCX LP has been produced for the soundtrack to Emerald Fennell's adaptation of the Emily Brontë classic, Wuthering Heights. What we get is a mix of Charli's forward-facing electronic music, triumphant builds and jagged glitched vocal elements. On the other side of the coin, the music here is grandly orchestral and soaringly evocative, adding a further emotional layer to her already expansive sound palette.
Howling bells are back after 10 LONG years and sees the band perfectly toeing the line of melodic jangle (which they do very well indeed) and heft, with grungy sections raising the bar into head-nodding pit tackle. Hopefully they'll find the inspiration hits a little quicker next time, because this definitely feels like a band with a renewed vigour.
Momoko Gill's eponymous new LP is the ideal tonic for a busied mind, with slowly shifting jazzy progressions and languid vocals coming together into a perfectly paced mix of soul and groove. There are moments of more hurried expression, but it never feels unbalanced and absolutely shines with Gill's mastery of conception and execution.
That's not it either, we've got the brand new one from Chris Massey's Thief Of Time project and sees Chris, Mike and Lady Lady (off of that ace Joey T record from a few years ago) perform Ms. Lady's superb opus, 'Cosmic'. It's a treat to hear it on vinyl too after their great performance at Factory in December. Great release, great folk. You should if you get chance pop along to the release party at The Carlton Club in Whalley Range this very weekend. It's going to be a lovely evening, and it's a great spot there too. Extra points if you spot a wild Kickin Pigeon when you're out and about. More details / Tix here.
Later on this month, Wigan-based radio station and Greater Manchester event promoter Alltrax throws its first day party at renowned grassroots music pub The Snug in Atherton. the above-mentioned KP is going to be spinning some tunes with Tom2Trax & Prof, and you should definitely check out their shows for the station too. Get involved here
That's it for this week. See you soon everyone!

Howling Bells - Strange LifeCD - £11.99 Due: 20th Feb Coloured LP - £21.99 Dinked Edition LP - u/avbl
Barry says: A brand new album from Howling Bells after 10 long years is more than welcome, and hits all the notes you'd expect despite the long break. Evocative lyrics ride atop jangling guitars, rolling bass and that super laid-back aussie vocal style, pushing into fuzzy grunge territory on a good number of occasions. Top stuff.
|
 |
Momoko Gill - MomokoLP - £22.99 CD - £10.99 Signed LP - £22.99
Barry says: Super smooth, beautifully languid jazz-tronica that could just as easily be played at a dinner party as a smokey, packed lounge club. There are touchstones all over the musical spectrum, but it's really hard to pin down anything as a definite influence. Wonderfully heartfelt, evocative jazzy songwriting. A startlingly lovely outing.

Barry says: I've been enamoured with Flau since 2008's run of Geskia's 'Silent 77' and The Boats' 'Faulty Toned Radio', both of which I was OBSESSED with, and still am. This is a beautifully languid, environmental ambient beauty that is rich in the airy, tape-glitchy otherworldliness that Flau specialise in. Stunning.

It’s more focused, and maybe more confident. I always kind of work off of rhythms, and I knew I wanted it to be even more beat-oriented than the last one. Justin really gets my voice and my lyrics and he understands how I work—that came forth even more on this record.”

They’re going on an extended tour! There were even extra tracks!

deathcrash’s third album, Somersaults, glimmers with an everyday euphoria. The London-based slowcore/ post-rock quartet has always had an affinity for building worlds only to crush them. Its ten tracks are more vocal heavy than any of the band’s catalogue – think Mark Linkous via The Kinks – but lyrically, Somersaults resists revelation.

Deary - BirdingCD - £11.99 Due: 3rd Apr Coloured LP - £25.99 Due: 3rd Apr

Bonnie Prince Billy - We Are Together AgainLP - £22.99 Due: 6th Mar CD - £11.99 Due: 6th Mar Coloured LP - £23.99 Due: 6th Mar
However dimly we perceive it, we are living through a change of worlds. The one we were born into is slipping away, reshaped and denuded by human action. What remains is the question of what we will carry forward, and how we will refuse to surrender ourselves. Will Oldham’s new album, 'We Are Together Again', feels like an answer. In Oldham’s songs - and in the circle of others gathered beneath the name Bonnie “Prince” Billy - friendship, community, and the stubborn joy of making art with others become a means of persistence.

Andrew Wasylyk - Irreparable ParablesCD - £12.99 Due: 6th Mar Coloured LP - £26.99 Due: 6th Mar Dinked Edition LP - £29.99 Due: 6th Mar
For his new album, Irreparable Parables, Andrew Wasylyk felt a strong desire to write a set of songs featuring an element hitherto rare in his work: the human voice. Equally strong was the conviction that he did not want to sing them himself.
The Scottish multi-instrumentalist and composer set about assembling a group of guest singers, sending out the songs to wherever they were in the world. The vocals were recorded remotely and then, like migrating birds, winged their way back to Scotland. The result is an album of great beauty which, perhaps preeminently in Wasylyk’s work, expresses the vulnerability and resilience of the human spirit.

I’m at a point in my life where spontaneity is a lot more important to me. I don’t have as much to prove as I used to. I’m a lot freer and I love making music more than ever. There are no right or wrong answers. You just pray for your luck and try your best.”
