Greetings! Hope you all had a nice Easter weekend, stuffed yourselves full of chocolate and listened to loads of bangin’ tunes. It’s what the lord would have wanted (RIP The Pope by the way).
Nice to see a return of Sheffield-Manchester troublemakers, Moonlandingz, who’ve perfected their cyber-punk-meets-Iggy-and-the-Stooges hum, buzz and dirg to the zenith degree on “No Rocket Required”. There’s more of them now (including Iggy himself!), and they mean business!
Cloth caused quite the stir (or rather, hushed celebration) when their album aired earlier today. Me and Andy were totally taken in by their intimate vocal delivery and intertwined elements of pop nuance, folk sensibility and endless charm. Defo get “Pink Silence” to the top of your listening pile this weekend!
Also look out for the Cindy Lee repress. I know the vinyl is expensive! There is a CD version too… I mean, they’re out there doing it their own way I guess. Gotta commend the anti-Spotify stance! Can I justify the price? I’d love to say no, but in this instance, YES! – it really is something special. Expansive, free flowing, touching on folk, psyche, blues, American primitive and moments of Lynchian drama.
Some nice dance twelves: Mark Seven on Parkway, Harri Pearson drops some edits that stray off the beaten track, and a Weatherall approved, not before released bomb by Field Of Dreams. Plus Manchester (whoops I said it) label UHT drops its 2nd anonymous volume. Also, that Q Base reissue, complete with new Idjuts version, is a sublime slice of holiday house music that may have passed under your radar (it had mine).
Look out for the new Balaphonic album too. Out on NuNorthern Soul and penned by fellow Whalley Ranger Danny Ward (aka Moodymanc); it’s a lockdown labour of love, composed on a plethora of percussion and acoustic instruments, and is as enchanted slice of outernational paradise music as one could hope to discover at this time of year.
Still busy on the gig front. Two weeks today we have a special evening with The Fall’s Marc, Steve, Craig and Paul in conversation with renowned journalist and author Sian Pattenden. Celebrating the release of Singles Live Vol. 1, the lads will be signing copies of the album, taking questions from the public and chatting general hijinks about their time with one of the most influential groups of all time.
Then at the end of May, we’ve local soul star Ellen Beth Abdi with her album launch show over at Night & Day. And although it seems like ages away, we’re down to the last few tickets for BC Camplight and his “A Sober Conversation” album launch show which is taking place in our very shop!
Belfast’s Space Dimension Controller is one producer who’s synonymous with my tenure here at Picc HQ. His music career coinciding with when I started here as a young buck (!!) in 2007. So it’s a great honour to be supporting him when he plays YES basement tomorrow (Friday) night.
That's it for another week you beautiful dreamers.
Matt

Viagra Boys - Viagr AboysLP - £26.99 CD - £11.99 Indies Exclusive LP - £28.99
Barry says: Scathing, soaring garage riffs and distorted vocal swathes, as is the order of the day for Viagra Boys. This time the psychedelic quotient is amped up to 11, with woozy riffs and weird scuzzy stoner grooves coated with a veneer of heady, lysergic oddity.
|
 |
The Moonlandingz - No Rocket RequiredCD - £11.99 Indies Exclusive LP - £23.99 Coloured LP - £22.99
Barry says: More theatrical, athletic psychedelia from The Moonlandingz here, chanelling the spirit of 50's lounge jazz and woozy electronica into a camp and magnificently evocative whole. Brilliantly weird, but unsurprisingly brilliant.
|
 |
Self Esteem - A Complicated WomanLP - £26.99 CD - £12.99 Coloured LP - £26.99
Barry says: Soaring electronics, smooth synth lines and rattling bass booms underpin RLT's finely crafted album of effortless synth pop, dancefloor grit and uplifting, socially conscious lyrics. Another perfectly manicured outing from one of our favourite musicians.
|
 |
Emma-Jean Thackray - Weirdo2xLP - £31.99 CD - £9.99 2xColoured LP - £34.99
Barry says: A wildly varied, driving monolith of jazzy breaks and grooves, with throbbing distorted bass and Thackray's powerful, wandering vocal. Part jazz, part funk, part soul but *all* great. Another sign that Thackray is one of the most exciting UK musical talents around.
|
 |
Cloth - Pink SilenceCD - £10.99 Coloured LP - £22.99 Dinked Edition LP - £22.99
Barry says: I love Cloth. Their 2023 album, Secret Measure was my personal album of the year in 2023 and remains a favourite to this day. Obviously I was delighted then to hear they had a new one coming for favourite label, Rock Action but also delighted to hear that it's equally brilliant, angular post-rock indie business to that stunning debut. If anything it's even more tuneful and cathartic and inventive. Brilliant.

 |

|
 |
Maria Somerville - LusterCD - £10.99 Deluxe LP - £26.99 Coloured LP - £21.99
Barry says: Hazy, dreamy folk-flavoured rock music that's as reminiscent of the 80's and 90's as it is right up to date. Beautifully produced and wonderfully immersive, a perfectly manicured mix between shimmering shoegaze, classic songwriting and ambient. Lovely stuff.
|
 |
Djrum - Under Tangled Silence2xLtd LP - £25.99
Matt says: Long serving UK vet makes a welcome return. A reinvention of sorts, it sees Felix tread intrepidly into new sonic pastures, all the while maintaining that strong sense of musicality and sound system prowess that's marked much of this prolific producer's back catalogue. A triumph for many reasons (not least for motivating himself back into gear following a disastrous hard drive meltdown!).
|
 |
JakoJako - Tết 41LP - £23.99
Barry says: Shimmering, paddling arps and swirling FM synth blips coming together into a beautifully smooth but undeniably textural selection of blissful modular synth soundscapes.

Natural Information Society & Bitchin Bajas - TotalityLP - £28.99
'Totality'! It can only be good news. The second convergence of Natural Information Society and Bitchin Bajas, years removed from the first, misses no steps and posits low-key revolutions in gravity for everyone instead. LPs divide inevitably into two halves; here, the first side could be typed ‘space’ and the second side ‘time’. With loads of totally principled playing in the communal feel, both sides blur the edges warmly.

Tapping into the shimmering pop sensibilities of HAIM and Jenny Lewis, an openness of spirit defines these 12 tracks, partly inspired by the euphoria Prima Queen experienced on stage over the past year while touring with Olivia Dean, Dream Wife and Swim Deep.

The Pale White - The Big SadCD - £9.99 Due: 2nd May Indies Exclusive LP - £23.99
This is the northeast calling, with songs of stillness, reflection, renewal, defiance, hope, classic melodies and, at certain perfectly judged moments, furniture-shifting riffs. With a powerful album shaped by pandemic-era loss (of momentum, and of a band member), and by the wins brought by what singer / songwriter / guitarist Adam Hope describes as a “weight lifted off my shoulders”.
|
 |
Deerhoof - Noble And Godlike In RuinCD - £11.99 Cassette - £11.99 Coloured LP - £24.99
The music is joyful and foreboding, cybernetic and deeply human, all at once. Strings that evoke avant-garde chamber music and classic horror-film soundtracks bounce off guitar and bass lines that chug on impervious to the creeping dread. The drums are sometimes filtered to sound almost electronic, but no computer could come up with rhythms so funky and dynamic, with each minute variation from one snare hit to the next conveying worlds of possibility.

 |
Billow Observatory - The Glass CurtainCD - £11.99 Coloured LP - £22.99
Embracing chance and randomness, spectral guitars rise, flitter, and crackle into dusty particulates as the concept of time is thrown out the window on each track. An increasingly hostile society no doubt contributes to the album's sense of introspection and the quest for "otherness". Brooding, spooky, and beautiful, listeners are rewarded with a highly detailed collection of songs evoking visions of slowly spinning globes being knocked slightly off axis.

This new edition of “Gather In The Mushrooms” contains the cream of both long-deleted compilations with a few additions – COB, Roy Harper, Fotheringay – that weren’t available to Sanctuary at the time. Though they aren’t traditional, these songs have an authenticity of their own, an autumnal atmosphere and a naivety which proved influential in the 00s neo-folk boom (Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Alasdair Roberts, Tuung et al) but impossible to replicate.

Launched with the striking single ‘Tell me I never knew that’, featuring Caroline Polachek’s unmistakable vocals, caroline 2 showcases a fearless interplay of layered instrumentation, warped vocal processing, and moments of both euphoria and melancholy. Intentional and immersive, this next chapter solidifies caroline as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary music.

The tightest of friendships thrust them together in a void of culture, where in-jokes, a fourth member who plays computer games on stage whiles they thrash out (and maybe writes all the songs!?!?!), these charismatic young upstarts invite you into their gang, where the riffs are melodic, the lyrics emotional yet humorous and the drums are set to eleven.

Jessica Winter - My First AlbumCD - £10.99 Due: 11th Jul Coloured LP - £23.99 Due: 11th Jul Dinked Edition LP - £24.99 Due: 11th Jul
Jessica Winter’s debut ‘My First Album’ is a fully realised bold, questioning album, full of personality sitting somewhere on the spectrum between therapy and the dancefloor. Musically there are shades of Kylie Minogue and the glitter of 80s Madonna, there’s the flamboyance of Prince and Queen, the energy and occasional snarl of punk and the dreamy arched eyebrow of psychedelia. In a world where maximalist pop is back and therapy memes rule supreme, My First Album is the perfect soundtrack.

The Beta Band - The Three EPs - 2025 Repress2xLtd LP - £32.99 Due: 11th Jul
BIOGRAPHY BY IRVINE WELSH
I discovered the Beta Band, like I discovered a lot of great music, basically through eventually surrendering to the enthused urgings of a mate who was cooler than me. He continually evangelized about the EP’s. When I did check them out, I was instantly smitten by their originality and power.
