Piccadilly Records
It's finally time for the new Courtney Barnett album! Since her standout LP from a few years ago (I started in the shop JUST after everyone had played it to death, so was fortunately not a victim of the same fatigue as my colleagues) I've been waiting for some new solo material from our Court', and it's superb, glad to see that the single from the superb RSD 12" has made it onto there as well.

We have some exciting news too regarding one of our new releases, Theresa Wayman of Warpaint fame is coming in to the shop to sign some copies of her stunning new album (under the name 'TT') tomorrow! She will be here from 1pm, but feel free to pop by whenever to pick up your LP/CD for signing later on.

Speaking of instore appearances, there is a new LP from Ryley Walker out as well, the man himself having come and played a few tunes for us last year. It's absolutely something you need in your collection if you enjoyed his previous albums, it is more of the same folky singer-songwriter business, but with the meandering psychedelic elements magnified and refined into an absorbing and satisfying whole.

There's some new ambient business from John Tanner (of Wilson Tanner fame) on the player as I type, meandering and warming the soul with hazy ambience and calming waves of melody. Nicolas Jaar has a new one out under his 'A.A.L' moniker, which is as you'd expect, superbly produced and brilliantly esoteric (like we'd expect anything else from Jaar?)

There really is so much great stuff in this week that I've pretty much run out of room to bombard you with irreverent curios, though they are obviously still sitting there at the back of my mind, ready to pounce for next time.

Carry on.

Courtney Barnett - Tell Me How You Really Feel Courtney Barnett - Tell Me How You Really Feel

CD - £9.99
Deluxe CD - £12.99
Coloured LP - £18.99

Barry says: Another absolute stormer from Courtney, though you might have already heard the superb 'Nameless, Faceless' from the 7" a little while ago, and 'City Looks Pretty' and 'Sunday Roast' from the RSD 12", there are a bunch of gems to uncover on this including the snarling skate-punk melodicism of my personal highlight, 'Charity'. Killer.
Parquet Courts - Wide Awake! Parquet Courts - Wide Awake!

LP - £15.99
CD - £9.99
Deluxe LP - £23.99

Barry says: It's hard to dislike Parquet Courts, with their dedication to oddball time signatures and funked-out chaka-chaka rhythms, turning the idea of guitar bands on their head, with a heady mix of soaring power chords, introspective breakdowns and massive, chugging heft. Classic PC.
Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Sparkle Hard Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Sparkle Hard

LP - £22.99
CD - £9.99
Coloured LP - £26.99

Barry says: Classic slacker vibes, double tracked vocal flourishes and more acoustic balladry make up the backbone of Malkmus' output, but this one takes the elements previously laid and fleshes them out into tender but beautiful statements of melody and rhythm. More full-on heavy moments are tempered with their ability to reduce things when needed ; the bass/guitar scree in 'Shiggy' serving as a perfect example of a wholly accomplished concept, executed with style.

Ryley Walker - Deafman Glance Ryley Walker - Deafman Glance

CD - £9.99
Ltd LP - £18.99

Barry says: Narcotics enthusiast and all-round ledge Ryley takes us on his newest journey into the wilderness with 'Deafman Glance', with the same tender plucking acousticry we've come to know and love, but with the psychedelic element all the more pronounced. Brilliantly progressive and nuanced songwriting with Walker's imitable style.
Eleventeen Eston - At The Water Eleventeen Eston - At The Water

LP - £18.99

Patrick says: Currently causing the calmest stir on the Piccadilly stereo, the long awaited follow up to "Delta Horizons" sees Eleventeen Eston AKA John Tanner (of Wilson Tanner) treats us to warm white funk, hazy ambient and dreamy pop.
A.A.L. (Against All Logic - Nicolas Jaar) - 2012-2017 A.A.L. (Against All Logic - Nicolas Jaar) - 2012-2017

2xLtd LP - £24.99

Patrick says: Harking back to those stunning soul edits he cut his teeth with, Nicolas Jaar delivers a danceable (in a brilliantly unconventional fashion) set of mangled and manipulated club gems. Everywhere you look he expresses the unexpected, be it the blasts of needle bruising distortion on opener "This Old House Is All I Have", the radio friendly pop chorus of "I Never Dream" or dusty textures of "Hopeless". If you dig on Romare's sampledelic club collages, or Herbert's disruptive dance, then you're gonna love this club oriented set from undoubted genius Nicolas Jaar.
Various Artists - DJ Kicks - Forest Swords Various Artists - DJ Kicks - Forest Swords

2xLP - £20.99
CD - £9.99

Patrick says: Forest Swords slashes his way into the DJ Kicks hot seat with a 25 track set which fuses field recordings, tribal techno, atmospheric electronica, bass weight and folk traditions into a rhythmic exploration of the esoteric.
Ray Lamontagne - Part Of The Light Ray Lamontagne - Part Of The Light

CD - £11.99
Coloured LP - £19.99

Barry says: Lamontagne brings us his newest LP, with tender folk stylings subtly woven amongst the stunning acoustic balladry, all accentuated with Lamontagne's heart-melting vocals.
Half Man Half Biscuit - No-One Cares About Your Creative Hub So Get Your Fuckin' Hedge Cut Half Man Half Biscuit - No-One Cares About Your Creative Hub So Get Your Fuckin' Hedge Cut

LP - £16.99
CD - £9.99

Barry says: Another classic title from the HMHB camp, and fortunately the music is as entertaining as the cover is, with their trademark ska-lite jangle and throbbing spoken word oddities in full force, this is yet another superb outing.
Modern Studies - Welcome Strangers Modern Studies - Welcome Strangers

LP - £19.49
CD - £11.99
Ltd LP - £22.49

The second record by feral pop outliers Modern Studies. Elegiac and haunted, life-giving and triumphant, this beguiling return digs deep into landscapes both real and imagined, internal and external, in a work that might perhaps best be described as “kosmiche choral” or, if we’re pushing it “arts-und-crafts-werk”. Or, put simply, glorious pop music.
GAS - Rausch GAS - Rausch

CD - £11.99
2xLtd LP - £22.99

Barry says: Another stunning synth ambient masterpiece from Voigt, with shadows of dub techno and kosmische synthplay being overwhelmed with oppressive hazy ambience and otherworldly simmering drone.
Sex Judas Feat. Ricky - Go Down Judas Sex Judas Feat. Ricky - Go Down Judas

2xLtd LP - £18.99

Patrick says: In true Optimo fashion, this LP spits in the face of categorisation, serving up those low/high Funkadelic vocals, mellow ballads, African-flavoured Balearic grooves, synth pop, acid house and most other forms of music real or imaginary. Tore Gjedrem of Ost & Kjex leads us on a baffling but irresistibly hooky journey through his strange sonic world, introducing a who's who of the Scandi scene on the way.
Blue Hawaii - Blooming Summer Blue Hawaii - Blooming Summer

LP - £16.99

Patrick says: Putting the poetic (but completely uninformative) sales notes to one side, Canadian duo Blue Hawaii trade in the kind of sensual, textural synth pop that makes our Barry play with his knobs. Musing on new love during a few months in Central and South American, the duo deliver an LP which shifts between woozy, Cocteau-tinged chillwave and uptempo pop anthems packed with pep.
How Du - The Landing How Du - The Landing

LP - £14.99

Matt says: Yes boys! BP really come into flower during the Summer months. Their languid but totally engrossing aesthetic is perfect for melting into your surroundings as a powerful speaker stack throbs away in the distance.
Kilchhofer - The Book Room Kilchhofer - The Book Room

2xLtd LP - £14.99

Matt says: One of my favourite artists and labels of 2017 returns with a nothing short of epic double album, detailing Kilchhofer's rich and evocative sonic world. One for mushroom season make no mistake!
Beta Librae - Sanguine Bond Beta Librae - Sanguine Bond

2xLP - £15.99

Matt says: Ambient, house, techno and jungle, all presented here with a poised and sexy demeanor and oozing class throughout. This is ace.
Videotapemusic - Souvenir Videotapemusic - Souvenir

LP - £20.99

Patrick says: I'm totally in love with this. Assembled through studio manipulation, DIY recordings and painstaking collages of VHS samples, Videotapemusic creates a unique sonic world somewhere between downbeat, dub, Balearic and vaporwave with the charm of The Avalanches thrown in for fun.
Various Artists - A Totally New Sound Various Artists - A Totally New Sound

LP - £23.99

Patrick says: Last time out Smiling C were introducing us to the Arabic rap of Shams Dinn, and the imprint continue to expand our musical horizons on their second release, a retrospective of D.C. community initiative Aset. Youthful electro, jazz-funk and street soul with a hint of freestyle thrown in for good measure. It's a killer curio that'll make you move.

Paul De Jong (The Books) - You Fucken Sucker Paul De Jong (The Books) - You Fucken Sucker

LP - £20.99
CD - £11.99

Over the course of its 14 tracks – which range in length from 15 seconds to nearly 10 minutes – we hear complex tapestries of acoustic and electronic instrumentation submit to waves of unhinged screaming; found-sound assemblage seamlessly incorporating subtle R&B rhythms; Freudian funk; lo-fi prog-metal; and vast synth patch orchestration adding unexpected textures and tension to the whole spectacular mess.
Jennifer Castle - Angels Of Death Jennifer Castle - Angels Of Death

LP - £19.99
CD - £11.99

A sublime meditation on mortality and memory, ghosts and grief, 'Angels of Death' casts a series of spells against forgetting and finality, in the form of mystic-minimalist country-soul torch songs about writing, time travel, and spectral visitations.

Whether re-defining experimental fusion sounds with the hugley acclaimed Yussef Kamaal, or his catalogue of 12”s for imprints such as MCDE, Eglo, and Rhythm Section as Henry Wu, South London’s Kamaal Williams has been a key figure in his thriving international scene for the past few years. The Return is a natural evolution from the Yussef Kamaal project, mining the influence of visionary jazz but blended with all kinds of texture, sounds and signals from the over-saturated London streets.

The second act from the British teenage vocalists, multi-instrumentalists and songwriters, is the most startling, infectious, innovative and thrilling record you’ll hear this year. It is alive with furious pop, unapologetic grandeur, intimate ballads; with loops, Logic, and outrageous 80s drum solos. It’s an album that cements Let’s Eat Grandma as one of the most creative and exciting bands in the world right now.

Maud Nadal has been a member of both Moodoïd and Melody’s Echo Chamber’s live bands, and of course at times there are comparisons to be drawn with MEC, with both teetering on a crystalline peak where extreme joy and despair meet. But if anything Nadal’s own melodies are even more indelible, and her voice turns them into vapour trails.

Patrick says: Everyone's favourite tape funk don drops by the Second Circle to deliver a particularly sultry take on his boogie rollers. "Sub Terra" sounds like a long lost Herb Alpert dub (think Red Hot era), "Maca" brings choice streetsoul flavours to the table, "Timbalito" keeps the treefrogs happy and "Nucid" works through a dope underwater groove.

Drawing from an eclectic palette of influence from deep funk to Krautrock, electronica and prog, they’ve created a heady, intoxicating, pin sharp, and tightly wound mellifluous groove, washed over with cyclical motifs, acres of effects laden guitar hooks, and shimmering, textural technicolour soundscapes. It is at once blissful, dizzying and madly infectious.

‘The Future And The Past’ is bursting with a myriad of grooves and Natalie’s vocals float on top, light as a feather and tough as nails. “Short Court Style” dials the tempo into 90s R&B territory – punctuated by handclaps, sampled “woos,” and a Dr. Dre-esque whistling synth line.

Sub Pop found Yuno via Ish Butler of Shabazz Palaces, who A&Rs for the label. He stumbled on Yuno on Soundcloud and kept a keen eye on him. Like Ish, Yuno is encouraged by the genre-bending age we're in, citing Lil Uzi Vert and Young Thug as sources of influence. The EP's title clearly relates to his surname, but it's also channeling the emotional variety of the tracks. Loser edition white vinyl.

Heavy, grinding, yet commercially viable, this release sees the band truly shake off the ‘gimmick’ tag of the past and stride forward into new musical dimensions. Yes, there’s still 4 basses. Moses Taiwa Molelekwa - Genes And Spirits Moses Taiwa Molelekwa - Genes And Spirits

2xLP - £29.99

Patrick says: Currently killing it for the Piccadilly Jazz Club, this is an overlooked masterpiece of modern jazz. Released in 2000, a year before the South African pianists’ untimely death, “Genes And Spirits” marries the African jazz stylings of Dollar Brand or Hugh Masekela with jungle, soul, kwaito and hip hop, sounding like a lost studio session between Brand, Masekela, Hancock, Larry Heard and Goldie. Sublime!
