Piccadilly Records
HELLO MANCHESTER!

It's been lovely vibes in the shop this week, with all sorts of 'slebs popping by to do some record shopping. We had John Grant, obviously, with bandmates (inc. the lovely Peter, and Budgie of Siouxsie / Banshees fame), all buying records and chatting, brightening up our Saturday AND Sunday. We also had Ant McPartlin off of the tele, buying every album under the sun and being kind enough to happily pose for this stunning photo with our Andy. We had a nice chat about music, Andy posed with him and Matt did all of the hard work. That seems fair doesn't it? We've also had a few lovely comments from customers about reading the mailout every week and enjoying it, so to the folks who came up and said thank you to us, I thank you in return!

Now, we've spent the last couple of months hunkered down backstage, working on some major changes to the website. If you order from us online, you should be aware that the big switch is planned for Tuesday 19th. Right now, we're 90% sure we'll make that deadline, but if there are any unexpected hiccups, we'd rather wait an extra week and provide you with the straightforward shopping experience you deserve, than rush us into some no-deal calamity. If you're unsure whether the change-over has happened, you'll be able to tell at the check-out. I've seen the future...and it works!

Anyway, onto the really important stuff! It's why we're all here isn't it so let's have a chat about music! This week there is a brand new LP on the superb Ghost Box from one of my all-time favourites, Pye Corner Audio as well as a repress of 'Stasis' (one of our 2016 albums of the year) hitting the racks at the same time. I'd urge you if you haven't already to get the latter, and the former is an absolute essential. There's a beautiful looking (and sounding) Japanese Ambient compilation called 'Kankyō Ongaku', presented in a stunning 3LP or 2CD / Hardback book box set. It really is pretty, and the music is equally so. We have a new Ladytron album, all massive drums and throbbing synths, topped with Marnie's impeccable vox. There's a new Dinked Edition LP from former DeMarco live alumni, HOMESHAKE with hints of 80's synth, lounge, soul and everything inbetween and a couple killer albums from Memphis weirdo funksters, 'Stats' and 'Piroshka', an indie supergroup composed of ex members of Lush, Elastica, Moose and Modern English! On top of all these killers, we have a lovely piano-folk number from the 'Texas Piano Man' Robert Ellis, channeling Elton and Liberace, with Texan wit and Southern charm all over the place, and a funky, soulful synth number from the superb grammy-nominated Emily King on ATO records.

Whew!

Anyway, it's only been a couple years but i've finally relented and agreed to Mine's request to put Nick Cave in the mailout, with a shared interest of both of ours : a cat. (shame about the colour, we both know black cats are the best but this will have to do). Caveycat.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Barry. xx

Stats - Other People's Lives Stats - Other People's Lives

LP - £16.99
CD - £9.99
Coloured LP - £17.99

Patrick says: Duncan from Dutch Uncles hipped me to Stats a few months back (Memphis Industries fam innit), and I was on board instantly. Following the same absurdist pop route as Fujiya & Miyagi or Yacht, but with a touch of Roxy Music glamour, some Talking Heads vocal nods and a whole lot of DFA-style indie dance grooving, Stats are 2019's answer to Hot Chip, Metronomy and Holy Ghost.
Pye Corner Audio - Hollow Earth Pye Corner Audio - Hollow Earth

LP - £16.99
CD - £11.99

Barry says: Another absolute killer from PCA for the legendary Ghost Box, very much serving as a follow-up to Piccadilly top-5 album of 2016, 'Stasis'. Where the throbbing, machinated pulses of stasis still held elements of light, 'Hollow Earth' is very much a product of the unsure times we live in, dark vocal abstractions (don't worry, it's vocoded), fractured rhythms and saturation as standard. It's completely hypnotic and every bit as superb as you'd expect. Completely brilliant, and ALREADY album of the year material for me.
Various Artists - Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990 Various Artists - Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990

3xLP Box Set - £59.99
2xDeluxe CD - £27.99

Patrick says: Now, while the Japanese ambient revival has been going on for some years (check out essential reissues on Palto Flats, WRWTFWW, 17853) Light In The Attic steal a march on their competitors with this sublime compilation of obscurities from the Land of the Rising Sun. Wonderfully packaged, presented and curated, "Kankyo Ongaku" is a fitting companion to "I Am The Center" and the "Microcosm", exploring the New Age and ambient sounds of 80s Japan. Minimal, relaxing and utterly beautiful, this music is almost heavenly.
Homeshake - Helium Homeshake - Helium

CD - £10.99
Dinked Edition LP - £17.99

Barry says: Low-key funky basses and woozy keys, smoothly rolling along underneath Sagar's perfectly ethereal vocals. Pieces like 'All Night Long' are at once wistful and dynamic, smoothly segueing between longing odes and syncopated, rhythmic lo-fi indie. Just as comfortable playing at home as in a darkened lounge-bar with a whiskey in hand, and a half-composed text message hanging in the balance.
Theon Cross - Fyah Theon Cross - Fyah

LP - £19.99
CD - £9.99

Millie says: Theon Cross has been saving this gem for us, after working on other albums from Sons of Kemet and Makaya McCraven. Reaching out to other collaborators like Moses Boyd and Nubiya Garcia, makes Fyah a seamless Jazz album which is just what's needed right now.
Robert Ellis - Texas Piano Man Robert Ellis - Texas Piano Man

CD - £9.99
Coloured LP - £14.99

Barry says: From the grand, cinematic soundtrackery of Elton John or off-kilter college-rock keyfoolery of Ben Folds, Robert Ellis skilfully weaves heartfelt piano minimalism into grand classic rock opuses (opii?) within the space of a couple minutes. Perfectly constructed and brilliantly conceived rock and/or roll.
Piroshka - Brickbat Piroshka - Brickbat

LP - £18.99
CD - £9.99

Barry says: There was no way this wasn't going to be good, with such legendary musicians on board, but it really is a perfectly balanced meeting of minds. The shoegaze hypnosis of Lush shines through, along with the spacey 90's throb of Justin Welch's drums keeping things going. It's a brilliantly dynamic mix, and one that is more than the sum of it's considerable elements. A hugely enjoyable and brilliantly written collection.
Yann Tiersen - All Yann Tiersen - All

2xLP - £21.99
CD - £9.99

Barry says: Since the Amelié soundtrack, i've been in love with Tiersen's work, and this is most certainly the culmination of all of his previous works. It's a stunningly delicate, but beautifully emotive collection, more classically focused than Arnalds or Frahm but as tender as either (i'm not throwing shade here, i'm mad for a good pianist). Beautiful.
Czarface - Czarface Meets Ghostface Czarface - Czarface Meets Ghostface

LP - £23.99
CD - £11.99

12 brand new tracks produced entirely by The Czar-Keys. Fresh off 2018’s collaborative LP with the enigmatic MF Doom, “Czarface meets Metal Face”, the adventure continues as Czarface now faces off with Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah. "Czarface meets Ghostface” brings strictly mind melting beats and bars as 3 emcees clash like villains & heroes in the Savage Land.
Binker Golding And Elliot Galvin - Ex Nihilo Binker Golding And Elliot Galvin - Ex Nihilo

LP - £13.99

Emily says: Golding (of Binker and Moses) and Galvin push the physical boundaries of their instruments with techniques reminiscent of those used by expressionist composers. Tracks like “Adaequatio Intellectus Et Rei” and “Aliquid Stat Pro Aliquot” present a flurry of neurotic scratching, clattering and unexpected flourishes. Later on, ‘Non Plus Ultra’ offers a moment of melancholic serenity amidst the chaos. Not an easy listen, but a daring exploration of unique musical textures which might represent the darker recesses of the human psyche.
Chaka Khan - Hello Happiness Chaka Khan - Hello Happiness

CD - £12.49
Coloured LP - £18.99

Patrick says: After over a decade out of the limelight, a Chaka Khan comeback seemed unlikely, and the quality of "Like Sugar" took everyone by surprise (best pop single of the teens?). Well, that was no flash in the pan, and this whole LP bangs, covering a variety of styles, showcasing Chaka's sensational voice, and marrying the vintage and cutting edge perfectly.
Ladytron - Ladytron Ladytron - Ladytron

LP - £17.99
CD - £9.99

Distilling twenty years of experimentation into one propulsive album, Ladytron again push the boundaries of electronic pop in invigorating directions with thirteen songs that explore the disquiet of our times. Loaded with their trademark analogue synths propelled by relentless rhythm, Ladytron is a hypercharged album that radiates a visceral urgency.
Nubiyan Twist - Jungle Run Nubiyan Twist - Jungle Run

2xLP - £18.99
CD - £9.99

Now one of the leading lights in the UK’s new generation of soulful, genre-fluid artists, the Leeds-born and now London-based 12-piece collective Nubiyan Twist have created their finest recordings to date, effortlessly weaving together elements of jazz, soul, hip hop, African styles, Latin, dub, hip hop and electronics in a flow of thought-provoking and life-affirming music.
The Janitors - Fuzz Club Session The Janitors - Fuzz Club Session

LP - £19.99

Conjuring heavy drones and sinister garage-psych freak-outs, Stockholm outfit The Janitors have been a formidable presence on the European underground since they formed way back in 2004. Channelling the free-wheeling spirit of Hawkwind with equal smatterings of Sabbath and Spacemen 3, the band are masters of taking hold of a gnarly fuzzed-out groove and beating it within an inch of its life.
Emily King - Scenery Emily King - Scenery

LP - £20.99
CD - £10.99

Barry says: From sashaying, finger-clicking soul, swooning funk and low-key rhythmic R&B to longing acoustic ballads, anthemic indie-pop and snappy guitar-led minimal melodicism, Emily King pulls of every key change with absolute skill and an impeccable ear for a tune.
Bis - Slight Disconnects Bis - Slight Disconnects

CD - £9.99
Coloured LP - £17.99

Glasgow indie favourites fourth studio album is a spectacular study in the art of the pop song, both reflective and forward looking. Jam packed full of hooks and classic bis choruses the album also has more reflective moments as you would expect, some 17 years after their last lp.
Perfect Son - Cast Perfect Son - Cast

CD - £9.99
Coloured LP - £19.99

Perfect Son steps boldly into the light without sloughing off emotional weight or depth. With powerful, sweeping production that recalls the best pop beats of Matthew Dear and arcing melodies that conjure the majesty of Shearwater, Perfect Son animates sensations of lust, belonging, and newfound trust with tumescent electronic arrangements that threaten the safety of any sound system.
Endon - Boy Meets Girl Endon - Boy Meets Girl

CD - £12.49
Coloured LP - £18.99

Endon is a band as mercurial as they are ferocious. Comprised of the quintet of vocalist Taichi Nagura, guitarist Koki Miyabe, drummer Shin Yokota and electronics/noisemakers Taro Aiko and Etsuo Nagura, Endon’s music is contained chaos, bending and colliding genres into one another atop a bed of thunderous distortion, feedback, and unearthly squeals.
Methyl Ethel - Triage Methyl Ethel - Triage

LP - £15.99
CD - £9.99

The musical project of Jake Webb, Methyl Ethel, has always been a surrealist outfit - a dark and obscured expression of life set to the backdrop of dream pop hooks. But Triage is a more reflective album than their previous two – featuring singles ‘Scream Whole’ and ‘Real Tight’, it explores the notion of coming of age, only to reference it for the snapshots and passing memories that it has become.
Various Artists - Modern Jazz Dance Classics Volume 1 Various Artists - Modern Jazz Dance Classics Volume 1

Yin Yin - Dion Ysiusk Yin Yin - Dion Ysiusk

Ltd 7" - £9.99

Patrick says: The best Bongo Joe in aaages for me this! On the A-side Yin Yin cook up a slow rolling syrup groove, then get deep into molam organs and thai guitar, coming on strong like a Khuruangbin - Paradise Bangkok collab. They save the real magic / madness for the B-side though, sending us into the stratosphere with the wild "Dis Ko Dis Ko", a street market "I Feel Love" with lunatic guitar licks and echo drenched vocals.
Fresh Band - Come Back Lover Fresh Band - Come Back Lover

12" - £16.99

Patrick says: Absolutely vital groove music on the boogie / proto house overlap. Mixed by the one and only Tony Humphries, this bad MF throws out dojo moves in the heart of the dancefloor. All four versions should tickle your pickle, but the bass-heavy bump of the "Dub Remix" is on another level of trouser-tenting excellence.
Ishmael Ensemble - Severn Songs 3: The River Feat. Yazz Ahmed Ishmael Ensemble - Severn Songs 3: The River Feat. Yazz Ahmed

7" - £10.49

Emily says: The Ishmael Ensemble craft a hypnotic groove with rich brass motifs, crashing drums and shimmering percussion. While reminiscent of middle eastern tonality and the spiritual jazz tradition, the undulating synth lines bring it firmly into the realms of new UK jazz.
Khalab - Black Noise Remixed Khalab - Black Noise Remixed

Ltd 12" - £12.99

Matt says: On The Corner follow up their impressive debut with another brilliantly oddball curation. Three cutting edge producers drafted in to remix the wonderfully electro-esoterica of Khalab.
Shanti Celeste & Hodge - Soba Dance Shanti Celeste & Hodge - Soba Dance

12" - £9.99

Sil says: Dancefloor realness that it has been much needed through all my prelistenings this week. Hence I get extremely excited and I even start to shake my aging hips. But who would not with this 3 scorchers that see Celeste and Hodge kill it with such elegance? Top draw wax.
Joe Armon-Jones - Starting Today In Dub Joe Armon-Jones - Starting Today In Dub

Ltd 12" - £7.99

Patrick says: Sarf Landaan keyboard fiddler Joe A-J bounds back into Piccadilly, plucking a couple of beauties from his Brownswood debut and serving them in demented dub form. The A-side is an fx laced journey into freaky jazz dance, while the flip is pure dub - the jazzy keyboard and trumpet motif skewed out like Augustus Pablo's melodica.
LCD Soundsystem - Confuse The Marketplace LCD Soundsystem - Confuse The Marketplace

12" - £11.99

Patrick says: Long live LCD. Just days after I had the pleasure of their recent "Electric Lady Sessions", New York's finest repress this classic EP of B-sides and remixes. "Freak Out / Starry Eyes" is as good as anything they've recorded, that Onanistic Dub is a triumph of kraut-laced nu-disco and "Hippie Priest" is full on live-jam Fall tackle. Ace!
Plush - Free And Easy Plush - Free And Easy

12" - £8.99

Patrick says: Strictly high grade boogie here on this welcome Plush reissue - synth sparkle, soul glow vocal, emphasis on the 2! Get it. Reminds me of washing the car on Sunday listening to Legacy. All the gees know...
Schoolly - D - What Does It Mean Schoolly - D - What Does It Mean

7" - £10.99

Patrick says: You might not realise it, but Schoolly-D invented gangsta rap right here. Ripped by Ice T, Easy E and B.I.G. amongst others, "What Does It Mean" is the blueprint for the whole movement. Time to get educated.
Techfunkers - Techfunkers The Album: Techfunk Is Where It's At (Vol 1) Techfunkers - Techfunkers The Album: Techfunk Is Where It's At (Vol 1)

Ltd 12" - £10.99

Matt says: Another one from 1995 that's escaped my radar up until now. Not sure if I'm a) genuinly devo'd at myself for not doing enough homework or b) mega buzzed that I get a chance to play it out now. Oh the quandary!
Lenny Williams - Changes - Joaquin Joe Claussell Edits Lenny Williams - Changes - Joaquin Joe Claussell Edits

Ltd 12" - £18.49

Sil says: So far, Claussell has not failed. There is not an edit that he has not mastered and nailed. This one here is no exception. Let it go at your own peril!
Red Astaire - Follow Me / The Wildstyle Red Astaire - Follow Me / The Wildstyle

7" - £9.99

Sil says: Few edits reach the category of classics. Here you have two on one single 7 incher. Official reissue oozing warmth and energy left and right!
Shahid Wheeler - Just One Dance Before You Go Shahid Wheeler - Just One Dance Before You Go

12" - £12.49

Patrick says: Clarence takes a little soul, jazz, disco and funk, grinds it up and slaps it in the peace pipe, taking us into a higher dance floor realm. A soulful slammer from Floating Pants Melodies International imprint.
Tata - It's A Mess Tata - It's A Mess

12" - £13.99

Patrick says: Was there a more OTT decade than the 80s? I think not. This 1985 mover sees former Kabasa frontman prove dry ice drama made it as far as South Africa with a sizzling synth funker about the cold war. Swtich it up on the flip for an e-e-e-lectro flyer called "Afro Breakdance".
Payfone - I Was In New York / A Prayer For Maya Angelou Payfone - I Was In New York / A Prayer For Maya Angelou

12" - £8.99

Patrick says: Payfone take full advantage of their newly launched Otis imprint, dropping a double header which sways between house, disco, cosmic, Balearic, street soul and boogie, while sounding completely up to date. Would have been a hit on DJ History (r.i.p.)
Mahbunzi Nahgo Pihndi - D Ebando Mahbunzi Nahgo Pihndi - D Ebando

12" - £12.99

Matt says: Perilously dark neo-shamanism here that kicks off a new spellbook of sonics. Quite terrifying in parts - I advise caution when consulting with The Other whilst on entheogens.
Ramone - Soul Reggae Prisonnier Ramone - Soul Reggae Prisonnier

Ltd 7" - £9.99

Patrick says: Bonjo Joe take us to Mauritius with a couple of melancholic sega grooves alive with rhythm and passion. This is how you dance with a broken heart...
Jack Jacobs - I Believe It's Alright Jack Jacobs - I Believe It's Alright

Ltd 7" - £12.49

Patrick says: We get not one, but two releases from the Melodies International camp this week, and this 7" is all about the psychedelic soul folks. Not only does Jack Jacobs possess a voice filled with passion and honesty, he can make a guitar cry like a stranded expat (#FUCKBREXIT). Boss.
Jemmy - Jemmy’s Belters Jemmy - Jemmy’s Belters

12" - £8.49

Run DMC - Sucker MC's Run DMC - Sucker MC's

Due: 22nd Mar

We last heard from Lucy Rose with the release of 2017’s Something’s Changing, a record that heralded a new outlook for the musician who was re-evaluating what she wanted to do and how she wanted to do it. If Something’s Changing was an artist rediscovering their voice, No Words Left is Lucy using that voice to devastatingly frank effect. Lyrically and musically fearless, this record is a beautifully intense, but often unsettling listen. It’s a body of work, a fine modern example of the e

Due: 19th Apr

'Big Wows' is heavier, harder and weirder than Stealing Sheep’s previous work. Bold neon pop songs with rave percussion, steelpans, dreamy segues and breathy experiments. The *fsszzt* sound of lemonade opens the album with a hyper-real sense of optimism that progressively reveals the cracks of dystopian irony amidst sugar–coated pop; held together by Emily Lansley’s bass guitar, Luciana Mercer’s drum kit, Rebecca Hawley’s synths, and the trio’s swooning steely vocal harmonies.

The current frontman of Texan legends Midlake embraces both past and present times for his glorious debut solo album, To Each His Own, under his new enigmatic alias E.B. The Younger. It’s a deeply personal record, rooted in Pulido’s love of warm, glowing rock, folk and country hues that came of age in the 1970s woven with contemporary recalibrations: guitars ripple, sigh and sizzle alongside gliding keyboards over crisp, choppy and becalmed rhythms.

The album showcases an artist totally in command of her voice, able to wield her inviting charm and razor-sharp wit into authentically raw songs. It’s a resounding statement of purpose in recent memory and most importantly, it’s a portrait of Donnelly taking charge. She says, “this album made me feel like I was back in the driver’s seat. It was really liberating and grounding to realize that no one can fuck with this except me.”

The rumours are true: the secret electronic album that Stephen Malkmus has been telling everyone about sees the light of day through Domino. But Groove Denied is not a full-blown plunge into EDM or hiptronica. In fact, there aren’t any purely instrumental tracks on the album. Every song is precisely that: a song, featuring Malkmus staples like an artfully askew melody and an oblique lyric.

Here they hit us with four proto-techno, synth wave jams and two unreleased cuts from Kansas City's Short-Term Memory.
