It's another massive week for records and another big week for mailorder too, but that also means there is a real and present danger that the bucking shelves will fall over and kill Paul if they get any more full, so please could you come and pick up your paid for records, or check out and pay if you're a stasher? That would be lovely, and it would make sure our social media stays in good order. Nice one!
First up on the record stakes is Jalen Ngonda's spellbinding 'Doctrine Of Love', and we'd also like to say with it a huge thank you to everyone who came to the outstore performance at Night & Day last week, and indeed to Jalen for such a superb night, fun was had by all and it was a great way to launch a beautiful LP. As for the record, it's beautiful swooning soul but with the crackling love songs of the 60's under the spotlight, with jazzy breaks and Motown grooves the order of the day. It's a wonder anyway, and has us all aflutter.
Lee Perry manages to keep entertaining us long after his death, this time sees him almost entirely eschewing dub for a collaboration with Mouse On Mars. Recorded in 2019, just before his death, 'Spatial, No Problem' sees perry shifting between dubby timbres and slowly uttered phrases into rapidly spoken vocals and frenetic instrumental madness. It's a mix that shouldn't work on paper, but in reality Perry's gruff vocalisations perfectly offset MOM's quirky, often downbeat instrumentals, resulting in something that certainly ends up dub-adjacent but is really something new altogether.
The new Widowspeak album is a beauty indeed, and I can't imagine there's much there that any of us wouldn't like but I think Laura phrased it best when she said
'Widowspeak return with another collection of gentle, country-tinged pop songs. Molly's understated vocals evoke the dreamy intimacy of Hope Sandoval, while the melodies and guitar work bring to mind artists such as Tom Petty and R.E.M."
As far as compilations go, you should definitely be aware of Curses' series of 'Next Wave Acid Punx' compilations, covering the foundations of outsider electronic music in the 70's and 80's, with particular reference to the New York electronic scene. This week sees the release of 'Next Wave Acid Punx TROIS', wallowing in the gritty industrial waters of EBM and proto-trance. It's another brilliant outing in the series, and deserves your time.
Ooh, also we've not long announced A Beth Orton album launch show with our good friends Night & Day! It's on the 2nd of July and should prove to be a lovely night all round, we're big fans of Beth's music in the shop and this new album is already shaping up to be a corker, check the link for more info / ticket details etc.
On the gig horizon, WU LYF will be performing possibly the gig of the year next Saturday at The Albert Hall – which sees them playing both their debut Go Tell Fire To The Mountain and their latest record A Wave That Will Never Break back to back and in FULL! We’ve also been reliably informed that tickets are flying out but you can still get some here. There’s also a merch bundle up for grabs that has been kindly gifted to us from the band to give away to one lucky ticket holder, all you gotta do is get a ticket and you’ll be automatically entered – WORLD UNITE!
If you're out and about this weekend, then us two (points at Matt) are both playing, he Tomorrow night at The Carlton Club for Red Laser, and I on Saturday night supporting Marconi Union at the Yard. Lovely.
See you soon! Barry x |

Jalen Ngonda - Doctrine Of LoveLP - £22.99 CD - £11.99 Coloured LP - £24.99
Laura says: While Jalen's debut album was steeped in early-'70s soulful grooves, Doctrine of Love reaches even further back, drawing inspiration from the sounds of the 1960s.
With nod's to James Brown, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye, "Doctrine of Love" is a timeless modern soul album that wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Motown release back in the day.
Lee "Scratch" Perry & Mouse On Mars - Spatial, No Problem.LP - £23.99 CD - £10.99 Coloured LP - £25.99
Matt says: Another posthumous Perry number (just HOW many albums did he record?!) with German duo Mouse On Mars. Much like Sherwood's On-U and Ernestus' N'Dagga; the sound drifts far away the roots of reggae but still held together by the cosmic force of dub and bass weight. An engrossing, psychedelic and spiritual listen littered with exotic ear worms, tribal percussion and Scratch's distinctive drawl.
Ryan Adams - The Suicide Handbook2xLP - £29.99 CD - £12.99
Barry says: Finally, the album every Ryan Adams fan has been clamouring for for a couple decades (and the rest). The Suicide Handbook sees Adams eschewing the upbeat country rock and rousing indie of Heartbreaker for a darker and more elusive, late-nite vibe.
Widowspeak - RosesLP - £24.99 CD - £12.99
Laura says: Widowspeak return with another collection of gentle, country-tinged pop songs. Molly's understated vocals evoke the dreamy intimacy of Hope Sandoval, while the melodies and guitar work bring to mind artists such as Tom Petty and R.E.M. There's no grand statement or dramatic flourish, just a set of quietly beautiful songs that reveal their charm with effortless grace.
Death Cab For Cutie - I Built You A TowerLP - £22.99 CD - £11.99 Coloured LP - £23.99 Dinked Edition LP - u/avbl
Barry says: A brand new, vigorously energetic slice of DCFC's trademark poppy indie, wrapped in the freedom of small-label release and unhindered by expectation. The resulting album is gloriously chameleonic and in parts, emotionally taxing. In the end though, if you're a fan of DCFC, you'll love this and if you're not already then this might be time!
SLIFT - FantasiaCD - £11.99 2xColoured LP - £25.99 Dinked Edition LP - u/avbl
Barry says: A roaring wave of pummeling percussion, rolling bass and snappy drums beneath the perfectly pitched roar of vocalist Jean Fossat. Taut, burning leads and psychedelic mathy guitar licks to boot. Ace.
Overpass - Elsewhere, AlwaysLP - £19.99 CD - £10.99 Coloured LP - £20.99 Dinked Edition LP - u/avbl
Barry says: Blazing, emotionally charged punky indie from Birmingham, with hints of pop-punk and alt-rock, and a huge focus on the vocalists particularly powerful performance. A hugely energetic debut that reminds me of the punky blast of Ash's '1977', no bad thing.
Frankie Archer - The Dance Of DeathCD - £11.99 Coloured LP - £21.99 Dinked Edition LP - £24.99
Barry says: A hugely inventive clash of traditional folk and gothic danse macabre flamboyancy, wrapped in beguiling production and off-kilter rhythmic pacing. A brilliantly mad and uncompromisingly hefty electrifying of classic folksong.
Fink - The City Is Coming To Erase It AllLP - £26.99 CD - £13.99 Coloured LP - £28.99
Barry says: Though there is a lot of the traditional in Fink's music, there's also a lot of outside influence pulling at the edges of his skilful acoustic guitar pieces, resulting in an album that effortlessly wanders through ambient into improv-blues and even dub territory. It's a beguiling and hugely charismatic affair, ad one that need sot be heard.
DJ Seinfeld - If This Is ItCD - £10.99 Due: 12th Jun Indies Exclusive LP - £22.99 Coloured LP - £22.99
Matt says: The lo-fi house poster boy returns after a brief hiatus with a much more high fidelity sound! Touching on all corners of the modern dancefloor, with a decidedly quicker pace than the epoch-defining "Time Spent Away From You"; it's a full throttle rocket ride down the rainbow road on this outing, with plenty of crossover radio potential to boot.
Poppy Ackroyd - LiminalLP - £23.99 CD - £10.99
Barry says: I've always been a big fan of Poppy Ackroyd's work, since her spellbinding debut LP for Denovali all the way back in 2012. Though there are obvious echoes of that work here (her distinctive but indescribable rhythm, here pointedly the same as on that debut), 'Liminal' shows an incredible artistic development, and results in one of my favourite modern classical records for a while.
Pollyfromthedirt - The Dirt - Early Doors Dinked EditionDinked Edition LP - £21.99
Pollyfromthedirt creates raw, rough-edged alternative music steeped in grit, emotion, and unfiltered truth. Blending jagged guitar work with lo-fi textures and stark lyricism, their sound is as uncompromising as it is evocative. At the heart of Pollyfromthedirt’s music lies a deep sense of place and memory – songs that dig into the bones of English nostalgia, suburban unease, and the beauty found in broken things.
Big Special - O'Joy!LP - £33.99 CD - £16.99
Barry says: It's new Big Special time! Companion piece to 'National Average', O'JOY sees the focused fire of the album broken down and stretched, with darker pieces and unused segments formed into an EP that's both reminiscent of the album but also an extension of it's influences.
Mekons - Horrorble (Mekons Vs Tony Maimone In Dub Conference)2xCD - £13.99 Coloured LP - £23.99
Barry says: Did you ever wish you could have a former member of Pere Ubu, producer and New York scene mainstay dub out The Mekons' last LP? Me too! Well, now you ruddy well can. Tony Maimone stretches the pieces into simmering dubby heaters, and it works *surprisingly* well.
Tara Clerkin Trio - Somewhere GoodLP - £22.99 CD - £12.99
The hazy, unmappable skyline-mirage of droning harmonium, upright bass, peculiarly accentuated wind instruments, acoustic guitar, hushed yet literally mighty keys combine to hypnotizing effect.
Zoh Amba - Eyes FullLP - £22.99 CD - £10.99 Indies Exclusive LP - £23.99
Having already become one of the most exciting saxophonists to emerge from NYC’s avant-garde scene, Amba is now letting their heart guide them back to their first instrument, the guitar, and to their hometown of Kingsport, Tennessee. The music on ‘Eyes Full’ is distinctly, instinctively tied to that place: muddy, loose blues with sweet burnishes of Appalachian folk.

Haylie Davis - Wandering StarLP - £22.99 CD - £12.99
Haylie Davis channels the spirit of the early ’70s, when Carole King and Joni Mitchell redefined songwriting. That time-travelling sensibility is celebrated on 'Wandering Star', the album’s title track and new single, out today. |
