Record Store Day's aftershocks continue to ripple through our staff this week with both mail order and counter staff's step counters ramping up well above average as we march to and fro to check up on remaining releases and appease (or disappoint) any late comers to the party. The 'left overs' (detailed in this up-to-date feature) are now getting very thin on the ground I have to say - with our stock being snapped up in what must surely be record time.
In terms of records (statistics, not vinyl) it felt like the busiest Record Store Day since before COVID. So THANKYOU! to everyone that made the effort to queue overnight or took advantage of the lovely Saturday morning sunshine to join the queue and keep us busy right up till about 3pm in the afternoon. Thanks to our attentive door monitors Paul and James, who did a great job relying info down the queue and keeping you all under control (!!) and in good spirits. A big thanks too, to our DJs: Beth, Martin, Abs, Nongi, Wardy, Rhod and Stu who all rocked the shop in various styles. You all played brilliantly! And I genuinely mean that! It was a truly spectacular day, enjoyed by us all, despite the obvious physical drain (handily observed by more than one or two of yous....).
So while the dust settles on the day, we look forward to this week's new releases and there's no let up really. Leading the charge is a record close to my heart - the new DJ Absolutely Shit EP. Red Laser's star signing, the EP is the first of a two part release which sees their expert and fresh take on hardcore reach its absolute zenith; with speaker blowing clarity, weight and definition. It's gaining plenty of traction with fellow DJs already and its great to see this local hero enjoying a definitive purple patch.
Keeping things local, Porij's "Teething" has also been highly anticipated. So much so we've booked them for a kinda album launch / showcase at the amazing Low Four Studios on Monday. Stylishly mixing angelic, soaring vocal hooks, electronic beats and glistening production; personally, I think they land somewhere between Air France and Real Lies - if Real Lies were fronted by Sade - but you can make you're own mind's up! They're a gilded addition to our fertile soils and we're really looking forward to seeing them live on Monday night. Get your album bundle and ticket for the gig HERE.

Elsewhere, London rebels Fat White Family return with a new album which has apparently driven them to their physical and mental brink in its creation (considering the notorious hedonistic tendencies of the band this is some claim!); long serving folkies Iron & Wine let their guard down as they proudly career through middle age; allowing wit, fun and frivolities into the attempted beauty of "Light Verse".
Ganava's new album has really intrigued me. Having had Shabaka Hutchings' (who produced it) LP on in the shop quite a lot this week, I've really fallen for the musician / producer's approach to jazz. He (Shabaka) exists in a place where time stands still; an enchanted garden of liminal dreams you never want to leave. This magic is clearly apparent on Ganava's "Like The Sky I've Been Too Quiet" which features fellow jazz geniuses Miguel Atwood Fergusson, Floating Points and Carlos Niño.
St. Vincent has released one of her finest moments to date with "All Born Screaming" which sees decidedly more synthy elements introduced into this unique star's sonic vocabulary. Meanwhile another highly esteemed, long running solo artist, Ben Chasny returns with his Six Organs Of Admittance project, focusing on vocal and guitar interplay and doing a rather splendid job in the process.
Digital music hawks need to turn their talons onto Squelch! - headed by our Ethan (who Saturday customers should be well acquainted with), they've a new EP out on bandcamp which you can check out HERE. Get some bloody vinyl pressed you students! (- Ed)

There's a meet up in the Gay Village this Saturday for queer women in a relaxed setting that's non-binary and trans inclusive. There's drinks, raffles and giveaway from local business and this all takes place at LEVEN on Chorlton St. from 7pm onwards. Check out @thegetgomcr on insta for more updates.
Otherwise, it's a weekend in with the snooker on mute and with all this Shabaka Hutchings / Miguel Atwood Fergusson related jazz on the player.
