    Pat Todd & The Rankoutsiders

    Sons Of The City Ditch

“Pat Todd is a true American Original. Raw real and passionate – that’s what I think of when I hear the name, Pat Todd. The Rankoutsiders project continues his tradition of delivering the goods to the people who need ‘em! And boy do we need Mr Todd and his Rankoutsiders, now more than ever.” ~Eddie Spaghetti, The Supersuckers.

A resurgent Dog Meat Records is thrilled and proud to release a new album by a resurgent rock'n'roller and an old friend, PAT TODD and his band THE RANKOUTSIDERS. The seventh album by LA's finest rock'n'roll band comes some 36 years after the label's first dalliances with Pat, back when he fronted the legendary Lazy Cowgirls. The new album shows that Pat has lost none of his spark, that his voice and songwriting have only gotten stronger, and that he's got another killer band behind him, one that mixes classic '70s punk rock roots with country, blues and rock'n'roll in a manner that sits somewhere between Exile on Main Street and LAMF.

The new album is highlighted as usual by Pat Todd's fantastic songs. A prolific writer with an eye on life in the margins - whether they be in small towns or the big sprawling city he has called home for 40 years - Todd routinely hits the mark where youth and the advancement of age find common ground in alienation and wilfulness. Pat knows that rock’n’roll is not necessarily a young person's game, and nor is it a glamourous one; the name he gave this band accurately points to where he and they are coming from. New originals like 'All We Have To Show', the horn-riffing rocker 'Living In A World of Hurt' and the raucous country-folk punker 'Goodbye to the World' are up there with anything he has ever written, and the Rankoutsiders play them even better than ever. Indeed, a couple of choice covers - a version of 'Hi Ho Silver Lining', sung by guitarist Nick Alexander and cut before Jeff Beck's unfortunate passing, and a version of David Johansen's old heartbreaker 'Donna' cut before word of Martin Scorsese’s Johansen documentary got out - shows by comparison to the original versions just how well these guys can crank it out.

For over 20 years - from the early 80s to the early 00’s- Pat Todd fronted the undisputed Los Angeles roots-punk kings: THE LAZY COWGIRLS. Having landed in LA from the mid-west-meets-the south outpost of Vincennes, Indiana early in the decade, the Cowgirls sparked a new LA punk scene; their live album Radio Cowgirl was the first release on scene prime mover SFTRI -and ultimately inspired a resurgence of classic 1976 Ramones/Saints/ Heartbreakers-style punk that stretched across the US into Europe, Japan and elsewhere, inspiring bands like the New Bomb Turks, Oblivions, Teengenerate, Onyas and countless others.

After reissuing Hedzoleh by Hedzoleh in 2022, a collaborative effort by Meakusma and Soundway, this new 12inch features remixes by Jimi Tenor, Mark Ernestus, Gavsborg and Waltraud Blischke, transporting and transfusing Hedzoleh's tracks into new spheres and circumstances. Hedzoleh Soundz were one of the first and most original ‘Afro’ bands from 1970s Ghana, playing an unusual mix of traditional music and western rock as part of the West African Highlife scene. The music for the Hedzoleh album was used by legendary South-African trumpeter Hugh Masekela as the backbone to his afrojazz classic, “Masekela – Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz”. The Hedzoleh Soundz Remixes 12inch features an eloquent, deep, deeply poppy even, dub by Mark Ernestus, Jimi Tenor taking the original Rekpete track into even more joyous territory, adding some subtly hypnagogic touches at the end, Gavsborg transforming Y Yes Baa Gee Wo into a beat-based drone of sorts, a toolin the right hands, and a majestic experimental twist by Waltraud Blischke, sampling one Hedzoleh track and one unreleased solo track by Sascha Todd, son of Hedzoleh bass player and vocalist Stanley Todd.

This record came about with the support of Ostbelgien.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: I mean, it's got Mark Ernestus on it - I was already sold! But the other three tweaks are worthy of investigation. The Jimi Tenor rework had me with its meandering sax lines and jagged beats, whilst Gavsborg's wigged-out wobble sucked me into its languid downbeat whirlpool. Top stuff.

Fug / Bobby Lee & Mia Doi Todd

Home: 4hero & A Mountain Of One Remixes

RE:WARM 012 is a double AA side 12” with remixes of two of the most talked-about tracks from the compilation, Fug – From Little Seeds We Grow & Bobby Lee & Mia Doi Todd – Walking With Trees. None other than 4hero & A Mountain of One were on remix duties for these two wonderful tracks.

For the A-Side 4hero take the wonderfully laidback style of the original track by Fug – From Little Seeds We Grow and turn in a full-on tearjerker. The strings and orchestration on this remix are reminiscent of some of our favourite 4hero moments from over the years. The Drums shuffle along nicely with Jess Williams voice perfectly complimenting this take on the track. This one is set for summer glory by any standard.

Flip this over to the AA side for the complete analogue journey that is A Mountain of Ones spaced out dubs of Bobby Lee & Mia Doi Todd - Walking with Trees. Mo & Zeben take this track by its scruff and give it a full-on tropical overhaul using crazy old fashioned dub techniques, stringing it out into a low end slow motion house dub ready for sun-drenched moments with sand between your toes and the smell of sun lotion on the breeze.

Barry says: NY legends The Velvet Underground feature on this new documentary from Todd Haynes, and this is the soundtrack to that feature. What we have in essence though, is just a great collection of tunes from VU and associated acts. It's a superb collection on it's own merits, and a superb soundtrack too.

Many credit New Jersey's Todd Edwards and pivotal in forging the early sound of UKG. His shoulder-dropped, shuffled house beats and accentuated and pitched up vocal cuts fast became adopted and exaggerated by London and Birmingham's embryonic 2step producers as the cross pollination of American dance music and UK attitude bloomed in the late 90s and early millennium. Since then the producer has enjoyed plenty of admiration on this side of the pond, with some legendary DJ performances much later on in his career; and has gone onto collaborate with Daft Punk not to mention accumulating countless hordes of young garage and house heads who regard him with an almost mystic degree of reverence.

Here Defected present a collection of Todd's best remixes and productions, housed on separate discs or in boosted 2xCD format. Includes his remixes of Indo, Moloko, St Germain, Robin S and more plus his own releases "Saved My Life", "Shut The Door", "Main Vibe" and the two collaborative productions with Daft Punk: "Face to Face" and "Fragments of Time".

A producer whose style and sound are instantly recognizable; his inspiration across genre camps and club cultures is far reaching and widely acknowledged. A truly unique enigma with a big character to back it up, it's a beauty to have all these amazing Todd Edwards tracks in one complete package. Most recommended.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: A household name for anyone with even a fleeting interest in dance music culture yet a man whose influence is often felt before his face known. One of UKG's biological parents guides us through some of his most iconic moments.

What time is it Mr. Terje? “It’s Album Time”. Indeed it is. In the course of the last decade, Terje Olsen has ascended from trainee astrophysicist, acclaimed balloon artist and occasional cocktail critic to be crowned Prince of Norse Disco, without even having to release an LP. His exceptional “Eurodans” on Full Pupp announced his arrival on the beardo disco scene, and killer remixes of the likes of Lindstrom, Antena and Studio made it clear he wasn’t a one hit wonder. Next came the slew of classy disco edits, which spread across the web like a low bitrate fire, saving many a DJs life in the process, and soundtracking every decent bar in the Western World for about five years. Since then our Todd has risen to the top of the disco world with a string of flawless original productions which have dominated end of year charts in recent years.

And so now we come to his debut full length, which sees Terje taking a step away from the club to offer a refined home listening experience. The producer marries the louche charm of exotica with a synthesizer obsession, pairs Latin rhythms with Fjord melodies and does it all with a great sense of humour. Old classics “Inspector Norse”, “Swingstar” and “Strandbar” all feature, with the latter segueing beautifully into the rampant Carpenter-esque “Delorean Dynamite”, lending their expansive melodies and driving pulse to the record. Elsewhere, “Leisure Suit Preben”, “Preben Goes To Acapulco”, “Svensk Sas” and “Alfonso Muskedunder” take us on jazzy diversions into an alternate reality of 60s hula bars, with scatting vocals and meandering solos. The hotly anticipated Bryan Ferry collaboration, a cover of Robert Palmer’s “Johnny and Mary” is the only vocal cut on the LP and provides a moment of sentimental beauty as the Roxy Music man’s vocals sit perfectly on Terje’s arpeggiating synths. Mr Olsen has given us that rare gift, an electronic music LP which works perfectly as home listening, and comes fully realised as the complete package; “It’s Album Time” more than lives up to expectations.

Stuart Todd is an acoustic singer-songwriter active on the Liverpool music scene. He launched his first EP "Playing The Field" at The View Two Gallery in November 2004. His second EP "Man On A Mission" followed in 2005. Stuart previously worked with Neil Campbell in the group Triad before re-emerging as an acoustic duo Campbell Todd with the release of their long awaited studio album in October 2007.

In June 2009 Stuart went back into the studio to compile a collection of tracks. The album "A Question Of Time" ponders on relationships and the passing of time. The music is very much in the spirit of the singer-songwriter movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s; with influences ranging from The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, James Taylor, Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Rolling Stones.

Mia Doi Todd With Andres Renteria

            Morning Music

"Morning Music" is the first album of instrumental music from Los Angeles - based songstress Mia Doi Todd. It was recorded and mixed by Todd at her Chateau des Chats studio using drum, harmonium, piano, tin whistle, tamboura, acoustic guitar, and bongos. On the tracks "Samai'I" and "Emotion", she is joined by Andres Renteria on cajon, piano, wooden stool, and udu. 'I started recording the tracks that became Morning Music while I was writing songs for my last album, Gea. Lyrics are the most challenging part of songwriting for me, and I enjoyed recording instrumental improvisations as a break from singing and songwriting. I was borrowing a friend's tamboura at the time, an Indian instrument shaped like a sitar but with no frets and only four strings, and I had just found my first harmonium, a small pump organ also from India. Classical Indian music is on many occasions one of my favorite things to listen to, and I started to experiment with these drone instruments and the transcendental experience they can produce while playing or listening to them. I had just finished a tour with the Swedish psychedelic rock band Dungen and was feeling the influence of their captivating melodies and great musicianship. I started playing the Irish tin whistle and using that as a melodic and emotional element instead of my voice, freeing me up from what felt like the confines of words. I began to edit and sculpt the recordings into a series of simple organic tunes. I gave the album to a few friends who enjoyed the calm and meditative attitude which it evokes. They also found the music very conducive to their creative endeavors. I am glad now to share the music with a larger audience.'

            Todd Thibaud

            Hot FM Sessions

Todd Thibaud and his tour band, with Joseph Parsons in session at German radio station HOT FM. Five Thibaud originals and cover versions of Steve Earle, the Replacements, Bruce Springsteen, The Band and Gillian Welch ("Barroom Girls"). The stripped down acoustic sound gives a real immediacy to Thibaud's style.
