Dirty Three

Love Changes Everything

Emerging once again from the unending waves crashing upon our fragile time-craft (adrift on the eternal ocean, and taking on water), Dirty Three are (a) back, (b) tangled in seaweed, rank with saltwater and possessed of three rather ominous thousand-mile stares (at least!), and (c) not wasting another minute – as nothing is guaranteed.

For their first album in over a decade – yep, it’s been since 2012’s ‘Toward the Low Sun’ – they flew in, got together and started playing. End of story. What else is there to say or do but that? Music’s their language, their true love; they never stop listening to that. And like the label says, ‘Love Changes Everything’.

The Dirty Three – Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White – formed up in Melbourne in 1992, to play with guitar drums and violin or viola, and within a couple years, they’d broken out – out of Australia, out of anything else they might have been inside of, to boot – and got worldwide. Over the next ten years, they toured over and over the planet, ceaseless like, and cut seven albums out along the way. After this, their unique style of play, fitted together like puzzle pieces, was decoupled, more often than not, and pieced together in many other, fruitful collaborations with many other esteemed talents. Over the past 20 years, they’ve gotten together a few times, renewed the vow, revved the engines and played some shows, or made an album. Like now –

These are the sounds of Dirty Three getting up to speed again:
    - the original fury of their drums/guitar/violin-or-viola power trio, cutting three unique paths through the wild into sudden convergence –
    - piano-plucked melodies ringing sweetly out over an undulating landscape flowing with guitar, drums, violin or viola, and synths! And broken hills, forests, lakes and deserts. And mountains rising in the distance...
    - mercurial shifts in mood; sudden descent from tumult of flights and heights into deep canyons of heart-struck adagio.

Equally sudden second-winds, feisty activity in their extremities never really ceasing. Opening depths. Wariness and patience allowing them to get caught up in loops, become ambient, transcend, and then fight their way back in again. Their wild and wandering heart not simply a spry derivative of collective sea legs; a telepathy already old as time evidenced way back in the beginning of their thirty-years-and-some run.
    - such mood! Once desolate fields pouring full of emotion, wandered into, come upon as if by happenstance (but actually sourced by the divining rods in their hands).

    - all of it – everything changed by love and bubbling up with the clarity of just-struck spring water; translucence giving way to muddy gushes of distortion – dirty guitar, smears of violin, drums at times pounded upon beyond the microphones’ ability to receive...

And when received, and committed to “tape”, or whatever they used – the master could well be carved in plates of amphibole – this music has been untethered from its streams of consciousness and reconsidered as a recording; brought to bear through edits, overdubs and mixes, re-sequenced and made suite-like. Made into this album. These lot were born to be as weathered as they are today. Time doesn’t matter. They make their gathered wisdom of the ages sing like something new every time. It renews. And Love Changes Everything.

    Scream From New York, NY

Released via Dirty Hit, their debut album embodies the spirit of a city that makes and breaks its inhabitants on a daily basis.

Cliff Solomon / The Jak & Lex Lathan / William Kincaid

Battle Cry / The Call (On The Edge) / Circuit Collapse

Another amazing Dirty Blends edition with three tracks of heavy jak beat and OG Chicago warehouse flavours.

The A side kicks off with Kincaid presenting a dark and menacing composition played and created with blood and sweat behind the vintage music boxes to come with this 12 minute cranium splitter - "Circuit Collapse".

Cliff Solomon honors the timeless work of originators Boyd Jarvis & Timmy Regisford with an '85 flavoured exercise of proto-house entitled "Battle Cry". With drum machines you'd associate more with the boogie genre, plus expert keyboard sections and sound effects, this retrograded house track will definitely devastate today's dancefloor leaving people scratching their heads as to its origin.

The Jak and Lex Lathan collaborate on "The Call (On The Edge)". recorded at Nation HQ and perhaps the most twisted and discordant offering out of the three. Warped vox, detuned synths and deranged licks smothering a straight up jak beat rhythm. Seriously wild stuff for the more adventurous DJ and dancer - TIP!

            STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Dirty Blends can do no wrong in my book at the moment. There's no one out there daring to take on the dark passion of jak beat with such authority. With each release they seem to get closer to the spirit of Ron Hardy... if you don't know - get to know.

            TRACK LISTING

A1. William Kincaid - Circuit Collapse
            B1. Cliff Solomon- Battle Cry
B2. The Jak & Lex Lathan - The Call (On The Edge)

            Grizzly Knuckles / The Jak

Caviar (Ensemble) / From Old Days Past

Dirty Blends hit us with their 10th release. I don't think a label has epitomized the OG spirit of Trax, the Muzic Box, and those early tape experiments by Adonis, Ron Hardy et al so well. Proper primitive, primordial warehouse tackle that gets right inside your body!

The A-side comes from new label member Grizzly Knuckles with "Caviar" - an edit of Jackmaster Dick's Revenge's (real alias) 1986 release, "Sensuous Woman Goes Disco" - but utilizing a much less x-rated vocal snippet, revolving around food rather than explicit sexual material.

The B-side comes from label head The Jak who recreats the drum rhythms of Jesse Saunders with his KPR, taking us back to the mosh pits of The Reactor or Medusa with another stripped back exercise in jak beat.

Dirty Blends - strictly for the most outrageous nightclub weirdos! Recommended.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: The Dirty Blends jak beat enslaught continues in earnest with a double header from label stalwarts Grizzly Knuckles and The Jak. Chicago historians will recognize "From The Old Days Past", a clever tweak of Jackmaster Dick's make-you-blush booty track (also used quite recently by Paranoid London). This stuff is so powerful and carnal; almost has me tearing off my clothes ready to slam dance.

            TRACK LISTING

A1. Grizzly Knuckles - Caviar Ensemble
B1. The Jak - From Old Days Past

The Falcon / Grizzly Knuckles / The Jak

Sounds The Alarm / Mad Bell / Aftermath

More jak beat from the on-fire Dirty Blends crew. This one's mad as a box of frogs, recalling the crazed genius of Steve Poindextor and early Lil Louis madness. All three tracks revolve around slam dance repetition, primordial jack patterns and pure Chicago spirit. Not for the fainthearted - strictly for the freaks! Recommended and limited.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: There's simply nothing like the Dirty Blends cartel out there at the moment. Revisiting the embryonic spirit of Chicago house music, when it was literally just a drum machine and a sampler, they manage to capture a primitive energy that's more intoxicating than half the other shit out there made with tons more equipment! Essential stuff for fans of Ron Hardy, Jamal Moss, Trax Records, Steve Poindextor, Adonis, Lil Louis etc etc.

The critically acclaimed band were crowned ‘Best Group’ at the BRIT Awards in 2017 & 2019, with their third album ‘A Brief Enquiry Into Online Relationships’ winning the ‘Mastercard British Album of the Year’ in 2019.

              STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: It's a document of one of the most legendary live performances from 1975's tour last year, and i've been assured it was a great tour too. Our Liam is a big fan. As for the record, it's ram-packed full of perfectly paced indie-pop drifters, all the 1975 classics. Lovely.

              Benjamin Francis Leftwich

              Some Things Break

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Benjamin Francis Leftwich returns with his 5th studio album ‘Some Things Break’ which sees a subtle reinvention in Benjamin Francis Leftwich’s sound and some of his most daring lyrics to date. The album consists of ten brand new tracks, all written and performed by Leftwich and follows his previous album ‘To Carry A Whale’, released in 2021.

‘Some Things Break’ was written over the course of the past two years at locations across the globe including London, Nashville, Washington and Stockholm. It was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse, Sia, Anohni & The Johnsons) and features collaborations with fellow songwriters including Mikky Ekko, The 1975’s Jamie Squire, Jon Green and more.

                Don't Give Up On Light

New label debut from Detroit's Tink Thomas (FXHE). Obviously being on Omar S' FXHE label, we expect a certain degree of quality on a show. But if this is what's in store from this producer then we're in for a hell of a ride!

"Mistic Flow" opens the record, a bucking house cut powered by an offbeat reggae sample and with deep set bass. "Lesson 120" is a rattling rhythmic house cut - one of those highly functional records when constructing a long form DJ mix that adveterous DJs are gonna get plenty of milage out of.  "Gonna Make U Dance" has the same concentric energy, but injects a funky bassline and darting string samples into the mix. One to get your spiraling into the speaker stacks with zero abandon!

Nice n cheeky "Bam Bam" mix at the end too via the bumpety "Wat A Bam". Big tip on this one folks!

                STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: If you've got the warm-up slot, but need to keep the energy levels and BPMS high, then you could go far worse than this record! Perfect for that midnight-2AM slot at TWH, I'm not sure if 'the house warm-up' set exists anymore as DJs and promotors opt for big name insta-influencers dropping 1 hour of festival-bangers!

                The Natvral

                Summer Of No Light

Today The Natvral (Kip Berman, former frontperson of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) returns with his second solo album, Summer of No Light, due 1st September on Dirty Bingo Records. On his second album as The Natvral - a spirited, beautifully observed collection of rough and ready songcraft - the former Pains of Being Pure at Heart frontperson was eyeing the past while dealing with an inescapable present. In 2020, in the early stages of lockdown, Berman began writing songs that reflected on a world that had seemingly ended – while contending with the needs of his young family seeking solace in the familiar.

“After putting my children to bed, I spent many a late night in the basement with my guitar and let my mind wander to the places where I could no longer go,” he says. “Initially, a lot of the songs were about getting as far away from the reality of my moment as possible.” He drew parallels with another tumultuous summer. “The record’s title, Summer of No Light, is taken from the climate crisis of 1816,” he says. Often referred to as The Year Without a Summer, that year a massive volcanic eruption in Indonesia darkened much of the world’s sky. The resulting ash brought dramatic global cooling and widespread famine, hitting Western Europe especially hard. While he initially sought escape from the isolation in which he found himself, soon the solace of home and family life began to seep its way into the music “The routines of domesticity were often unwelcome, and always exhausting - but probably mentally helpful. I was isolated, but not alone.” Despite the many graveyard romps that populate the record, it’s the moments that celebrate home that gives this album its heart. Summer of No Light is an album that’s born of a precise moment, yet revels in anachronism. Collapsing time to make a little bit of sense of this one, Berman feels artistically rejuvenated, drawing on histories large and small to breathe new life and perspective on his own. “It was a time that is now almost unspeakable – not because the tragedy was too profound or in any way trivial – but because we were all there.”

                  Oscar Lang

                  Look Now

Second album from West London, singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Oscar Lang. A split from his childhood sweetheart sent Lang spiralling, dramatically changing the course of the follow-up to the psychedelic-tinged fuzzy-rock of his 2021 debut Chew The Scenery at the same time as driving Lang into the most creatively fruitful period of his short career. The diversion has resulted in Look Now, an astounding record that makes Lang’s previous output sound like he was just testing the waters. Chew The Scenery and three melodically-breezy EPs that preceded it introduced Lang as a songwriter of rare talents but here is where he really lays down a marker, emerging with an album that takes in playful hooks, poignant lyricism, orchestral swells, ba-roque-pop instrumentation, a record that’s expansive but never overblown, intimate at the same time as being epic. It is his definitive artistic statement.

                    The Japanese House

In The End It Always Does

The Japanese House has announced details of her second studio album In the End It Always Does. Featuring recent single ‘Boyhood’, much of the album lives in the contradictory: beginnings and endings, obsession and mundanity, falling in love and falling apart.

With the announcement comes new track ‘Sad to Breathe’, an upbeat sounding heartbreaker co-produced by TJH’s Amber Bain with The 1975’s George Daniel and Chloe Kraemer accompanied by a beautiful live alternate version of the track directed by Sheila Johansson which sees Amber and her extended live band strip the track back to its bare bones.

“I wrote Sad To Breathe some time ago, it’s one of the oldest songs on the record.” tells Amber. “It was very different back then; it’s gone from being solely electronic to what it is now, mostly live/ acoustic instrumentation. It’s about that desperate feeling when someone leaves you and the disbelief that they could. It’s funny you could have those kind of insane dramatic thoughts, that feel so real at the time, but can by some miracle look back in fondness to your entire life being ruined. It all circles back around.”

Four years after her widely celebrated debut Good at Falling, this album sees Bain lean even further into the pop realm–with help from Matty Healy and George Daniel from The 1975, Katie Gavin from MUNA and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon among others. Bain credits Gavin especially with injecting her with creative energy and inspiration throughout.

The album also sees Bain work alongside producer and engineer Chloe Kraemer (Rex Orange County, Lava La Rue, Glass Animals), an experience she describes as “life changing” due to the unspoken, shared understanding between marginalised genders in a creative space.

“I’d never worked with a woman or queer person [in that way] before,” Bain says. “It’s nice to have someone who completely understands your standpoint and shared experience. Also, I say ‘she’ in every song... so it’s important that someone understands that.”

                        Rina Sawayama

                        Hold The Girl

Following on from her critically acclaimed debut “SAWAYAMA”, Rina Sawayama’s highly anticipated new record “Hold The Girl” sees Rina once again juxtapose intimate storytelling with arena-sized songs, creating another ambitious and original album to excite fans and critics alike.

Written and recorded over the last year and a half, Rina once again teamed up with longterm collaborators Clarence Clarity and Lauren Aquilina as well as enlisting help from the likes of the legendary Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence & the Machine), Stuart Price (Dua Lipa, The Killers, Madonna) and Marcus Andersson (Demi Lovato, Ashnikko) for their magic touch.

The product of Rina and these collective minds coming together is an album which melds influences from across the pop spectrum and is a bold and honest statement of Rina’s personal evolution; coming to terms with her own past and the jubilation of turning to the future.

                          Nick Manasseh / Earl Gateshead

                          Lion's Paw / Dirty City

One of three new 7"s out on Golden Lion Records and it's a UK reggae bonanza featuring two absolute legends from our home soils.

Nick Manasseh owns The Yard, Ladbrook Grove; and has been pivotal in the London scene since the 1980s. Earl Gateshead originally gained momentum in Bradford's West Indian Centre before gaining a residency in Soho which he pilotted for 20 years before working at Plastic People and going on tour with Dr. Alimantado and Big Youth.

Manesseh wields a the 'reggae flute' (or melodica as it's more commonly known) on "Lion's Paw"; a creeping slice of jungle dub somewhere between Pablo, Perry and Tubby with ancient percussion and plenty dub delay.

On the flip, Earl Gateshead showcases some impressive lyrical direction on the track, "Dirty City"; which, as well as containing a supremely infectious chorus, includes some delightfully introspective and insightful lines as it moves through a steady roots groove populated with shimmering psychedelic elements.

Maximum vibes up inna Todmorden areee-ah!

                          Los Peyotes

                          Virgenes

Ten releases in the space of seven years and then…puff, then nothing (in Europe). Los Peyotes seemingly vanished into the smoke that they knew full well did us wrong. But now they’re back, ripping up the rule book once again to shower us with evil-hearted, spitfire garage punk rock'n'roll on an album that takes in and mashes up straight from the grave garage rock with doses of savage psychedelia and hip-shaking yé-yé.

Prepare to be beaten, bastardised, and left twitching on the floor as they hit you with 13 brand new tracks. "They say we’re all the same. Long-haired freaks. Drugs, sex, and into everything filthy. Haters of authority. But Los Peyotes don’t give a damn." As they spit on the opening track, "People are sh+t", but hey, at least their dog ain’t! Screw the haters and critics, everyone thinks they’re one. Take a look around. But who cares when Los Peyotes are biting back with all the force they have? Cranked guitars, a stabbing Farfisa and those ever-present wild-eyed howls.

Theirs is, and has always been, a garage that draws lines straight back to their furious forefathers; Los Saicos, The Sonics, Los Shakers, The Seeds; and on their new album, Virgenes, they keep not only the flame but the whole goddamn sin-fuelled incinerating city burning. They rise up in swirling insanity on tracks like No Puedo Aguantar Mas (I Can’t Take Anymore) before bringing everything crashing down on songs like the riotously spooky Dame Dinamita (Gimme Dynamite). And yeah, of course, everything is sung in Spanish, drawing a line firmly back to their musical ancestors who cranked up that British Invasion sound like nobody else to pave the way for proto-punk. All hail Los Peyotes! Prepare to get dosed once again. - Sir Nathan Whittle de Manchester

                            Pale Waves

                            Unwanted

A fiery, confident kick-back against convention, Pale Waves’ third record Unwanted sees the group building on the promise of last year’s UK Top 3 album Who Am I?, and staking their claim as British rock’s most dynamic young group.

“It’s bold and unapologetic, and that’s what the Pale Waves community is about,” says frontwoman Heather Baron-Gracie herself. “We don’t need to fit a perfect mould, we don’t need to apologise for being ourselves, and we won’t change for anyone. That acceptance is what connects us.”

Led by riotous lead single “Lies”, Unwanted is a record that reaches out to the passionate community of misfits and LGBTQI+ fans around the band, tapping into darker emotions than ever before while also striking a fresh tone of defiance.

                              Beatopia

Critically acclaimed, award winning icon for her generation, beabadoobee returns today to announce her forthcoming second studio album Beatopia (pronounced Bay-A-Toe-Pee-Uh). Due for release on Friday 15th July via Dirty Hit, Beatopia is a fantastical yet deeply personal world that was formed in the imagination of a 7 year old beabadoobee and has been carried with her ever since.

Housing Bea's most impressive work to date, Beatopia marks a huge progression, in 14 songs she traverses fuzzy rock, classic singer-songwriter, psychedelia, midwest emo and outright pop whilst remaining undeniably herself throughout.

Barry says: Undeniably melodic and warmly produced throughout, Beabadooobee crafts beautiful pop songs imbued with a lightness and orchestral sway rarely seen in modern pop. It's gorgeously evocative and a great listen.

                                  It's All Smiles

‘It’s All Smiles' is the highly anticipated debut album from No Rome, produced by Rome alongside BJ Burton BJ Burton (Kanye West, Bon Iver, Charli XCX) and George Daniel (The 1975). Guendoline Rome Viray Gomez hadn’t planned on moving back to Manila, where he’d been born and raised, but the pandemic changed things. A festival appearance evolved into an extended stay with his parents, and then Rome, 24, rented a two-bedroom apartment of his own when it became clear he wouldn’t be returning to London, where he’d been living for the last three years, anytime soon. In the extra room he put his drum machines, synthesisers, monitors, and laptop to create the improvised home studio where he recorded his debut album It’s All Smiles, under his moniker No Rome. It’s an album for quality headphones, where each detail and decision can glisten. It’s the album Rome’s life has been leading to, a crystallized expression of a style that could only have come from his particular set of enthusiasms and influences. It’s major.

                                    Ol' Dirty Bastard

Return To The 36 Chambers - The Dirty Version - 2021 Repress

It's safe to say that hip-hop has never seen an album like Ol’ Dirty Bastard's 1995 solo debut 'Return to the 36 Chambers'. The brief glimpses of ODB's unhinged genius provided by Wu-Tang Clan's landmark Enter the Wu-Tang album two years earlier were begging to be expanded on to a larger canvas, and, with RZA guiding production, the album promised to give Dirty the creative license to make one of the most bizarre, entertaining and original LPs in hip-hop history. With his raspy, drunken flow and dark sense of humor, Dirty fearlessly attacks from all angles, throwing himself fearlessly into punchy rhyme attacks (“Damage,” with GZA), drugged-out party jams (the monster singles “Brooklyn Zoo” and “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”) and bizarre, grimly hilarious fantasies of sex and violence (“Don't U Know” and the R&B-tinged “Sweet Sugar Pie”). Backed by RZA's appropriately gritty, dissonant beats and appearances from the Clan, Return became an instant hit, selling over 1 million copies and earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album in 1996. The album stands as a high water mark in the Wu-Tang Clan's collective creative output and was selected as one of the Best 100 Rap Albums by The Source magazine in 1998.

Barry says: It's wonderful to have a new album from Wolf Alice, and 'Blue Weekend' is indeed a stormer. Brilliantly inventive and full of the sort of rhythmic twists and turns we've come to expect from 2017's standout epic, 'Visions Of A Life'. This one sees a band full of energy and vigour, and should prove to be just as impactful as their previous work. A bold and wonderful beast.

Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers - 2021 Reissue

The National’s second album, Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers (2003) proved a leap forward from 2001’s eponymous debut, showing a band adept at delivering warm embraces and gut punches in equal measure.

With word of mouth now spreading on the band, critics proved equally enthusiastic... Pitchfork in their glowing review called it a “Gorgeous train wreck” that “Lives up to its blunt title (with) Matt Berninger’s self-effacing barbs matched by the band’s equally potent hooks,” while Uncut also became early champions saying the album was “A genuine treasure... Livid as a bruise, this is brave, desperate, beautiful music.”

No longer a secret among those that know, Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers is an important record in The National’s discography with this new remaster showing that it’s more than standing the test of time.

Having been remastered at Abbey Road Studios, the 2021 represses stay faithful to their original artwork while their stunning new masters help make these much-loved records sound as vital as ever, further emphasising the early signs of the sound that would go on to make them one of the fi nest and most beloved alternative bands of their generation.

                                                Greetings From Muckingham Palace

With Brexit upon us, MUCK AND THE MIRES and London’s own Dirty Water Records have raised the garage rock banner high over the palace proclaiming a new chapter in rock and roll. This new full-length, produced by the legendary Jim Diamond (White Stripes, The Fleshtones, The Sonics) features a royal 14 songs, allowing the group to explore deep all of their favorite rock sub genres. There’s the Power Pop punch of “Cupid’s Not A Friend of Mine”, '70s AM gold sounds on “Too Soon To Fall In Love”, a bit of Psychedelia in the form of “Strange Waves”, gritty garage-punk (“I’m Your Man”) and a return to their Merseybeat roots with “Don’t Start Running Away” Boston's International ambassadors of garage rock 'n' roll, Muck and the Mires, have been described as a blend of the Hamburg era Beatles and the CBGBs era Ramones.

Their songs are reminiscent of the 1960's British Invasion, all two minutes long and ALL POTENTIAL HITS! Their live show is a high energy blast of fast-paced, post-punk gritty garage rock and roll. They have built a worldwide following through relentless touring, radio and satellite airplay and a string of recordings, produced by Kim Fowley and Jim Diamond, considered by many to be cult classics. In 2004 the band gained worldwide recognition when they were featured on MTV as the winners of Little Steven Van Zandt's (E-Street Band/Underground Garage) national battle of the garage bands contest. The band has performed coast-to-coast in the USA, UK, EU, South America, Canada & Japan. Sharing bills with many of their heroes including The Sonics, NY Dolls, Ray Davies, Flamin' Groovies, The Stooges, Paul Collins Beat, The Fleshtones, The Remains, and even Beatle Pete Best. The palace gates are open and all our invited in for a smashing time. Long live Rock and Roll and Greetings From Muckingham Palace! MUCK AND THE MIRES and Dirty Water Records raise the garage rock banner high over the palace, proclaiming a new chapter in rock and roll.

                                                  5EPs

Dirty Projectors’ 2020 five four-song EPs, each strikingly different from the next, all come together in a 20-song anthology titled ‘5EPs’.

Each EP features lead vocals by a different band member: Maia Friedman, Felicia Douglass, Kristin Slipp and Dave Longstreth, who all trade verses on the series closer.

Maia’s ‘Windows Open’ is acoustic and folky, Felicia’s ‘Flight Tower’ is both soulful and electronic, Dave’s ‘Super João’ is a four-track bossa nova homage to João Gilberto, Kirstin’s ‘Earth Crisis’ is a cut-up orchestral collage in the mode of through-composed art song, whereas the final EP ‘Ring Road’ weaves together the emotional, stylistic, and lyrical threads explored in the prior four EPs.

Barry says: I was just listening to Dirty Projectors' song with David Byrne for the 'Dark Was The Night' compilation just the other day, which led me to wishing for a collection of some of the more unheard of tracks from their canon. Lo and behold, stone the crows etc. Here it is. You'll have heard some of these tracks before, but it's a brilliant document to have them all together like this.

Formed in 2010 on top of a dirty fried chicken shop on London's Holloway Road, MFC Chicken play raw, sax-fueled rock and roll tunes about fast food and broken hearts. When tenor sax player Spencer Evoy arrived in London fresh from Canada, little did he know that his quest to reignite the spirit of the rock'n'roll sound of the American Pacific Northwest would start outside a chicken shop on the Holloway Road. Since those early days, this poultry-power rock and roll group have released four award winning LPs and a fistful of instantly collectable singles on Dirty Water Records (UK) and FOLC Records (Spain).

The band - Spencer Evoy (Sax/Lead Vox), Ravi Low-Beer (Drums), Zig Criscuolo (Bass/Vox), and Dan Criscuolo (Guitar/Vox) - have set the UK and Europe alight with 100’s of live shows presenting their own red hot take on "the music the Sonics and The Wailers were listening to", cementing this globe-spanning gang into the finest purveyors of Pacific Northwest rhythm and blues in the land. 2020 sees the 10th anniversary of the band and the release of their newest slab of vinyl presenting 14 brand new slabs of rock and roll, frat rock and rhythm and blues. Highlights include “KFC Called The Cops On Me”, “Breakfast ‘Taters” and “Fuck You, Me”. If you love dancing but hate contemporary music… if you are desperate to hear rock'n'roll taken back to its roots… if you are hungry for the greasiest item on the rhythm and blues dance menu, then you are most definitely ready for the indescribable, unstoppable sound of MFC Chicken - the best in the land!

                                                              Voila!

Les BOF! are Scotland’s answer to the perennial question that quite possibly no-one ever asked. 60s French yé-yé garage, served up with panache by venerable Scottish fuzz beat Rock n’ Roll emissaries. Their sound brings with it a certain… ‘je ne sais quoi’ - a fusion if you will, of unique, rarefied and aged elements of the garage beat scene, these chaps have been elegantly blended together from the likes of ‘The Thanes,’ ‘The No-Things,’ ‘The Sensation Seekers’ and ‘Preston Pfanz & the Seaton Sands.’ But who are these fellows I hear you ask…? Well there’s Ross – the drummer who draws together the sophistication of the Highlands, with a gentle, sweet Borders nuttiness.

Angus – a guitarist whose robustly flavoured sound is complemented by a smooth dry finish, matured well beyond the standard edition age. Laurent – the chanter exceptional, both light and fruity with a suggestion of lime and a slight woodiness. And finally, Colin – the bass player whose deep notes, triple distilled, bring waves of complexity, often resulting in heartburn. Following the release of their debut album ‘Nous Sommes les Bof!’ (CopaseDisques) the band have taken their sound both down and back up the British Isles and across the seas to their beloved European continent. Appearing on many an occasion at festivals such as Beatwave, Primitive, Gutterball and Purple Weekend to name but a few. 2018 saw a vintage year for the boys, with a memorable tour of some of Canada and America’s rowdiest east-coast haunts (featuring a live session on WFMU). After doing the rounds with all their other noisy vehicles, Les BOF! returned home to distil the sounds that had lay for some time in the cool, dusky corners of guitarist Angus McPake’s home-built ‘Ravencraig’ studio, a place where frugally almost none of the angel’s share is knowingly lost. Of course, whilst the exact secrets of its production are only known to the Master Distiller himself, the rumble and twang, the boom, the tonk and the ping are clearly expressed here for your delight and delectation. But yes dear reader, quite right you are, to truly open up these flavours, one should add a little Dirty Water. This 2019 release will surely help to further the reputation of any connoisseur’s collection with the finest that France, Scotland & Ireland have to offer. Mais oui, mesamis… Les BOF! are back on the scene and ready to share with you a little something of their latest long player

                                                                12 La Fievre Du R'n'R.
                                                                13 Port St Louis.
                                                                14 Formidable

                                                                The Scaners

                                                                The Scaners II

French gonzo-synth punks and intergalactic scuzzball house band. Miscreants from a future generation. Clad in white from head to toe, bug-eye shades peer out through a dirty water fog. They play a blistering set of songs that will propel, or had already propelled, them through the atmosphere on a fix of adrenalin in 2019. Is it the past or the future, for the present seems far away? Their second album, put simply, ‘II’, is a breakthrough moment, when the crawling Lo Spider once again takes control of this paranoiac, extra-terrestrial-abducted and abducting quartet and bounces the finished 12 doses into the hands of garage master Jim Diamond for mastering.

The result? Another bombastic, swirling garage acid trip through the stratosphere. Insane flights in the spiked punch bowl that is our galaxy. Destination: UNKNOWN. Lifeform: UNIDENTIFIED. Infection: CONFIRMED. Once again, as on their debut album, that which hit many ‘best of 2018’ lists, we are hurtling through space, kidnapped and unaware of where we head. With THE SCANERS as our only guides we’re tripping through on hyperspeed right from opener Please Abduct Me. Gonzo space punk a-go-go. The songs on II fly by full of alien abandon. More new-wave than their debut, but still an intergalactic riot. In 1947 they crash-landed. In 1977 they took off. In 2017 they returned and in 2019 they are preparing for a full invasion.

Finally the British Government are taking the imminent threat seriously. “The take-home message here is that there’s probably something out there, but we don’t know what it is. It’s an extraordinary revelation, not least because it directly contradicts the many specific denials that the US government has issued previously when asked about this subject, and their involvement in it. This isn’t quite the ‘spaceship in a hangar’ smoking gun the UFO lobby was hoping for. This is real!” Europe is on the move, succumbing to the infectious tractor beam-like tunes of The Scaners. All that is left is for the rest of the world to awake from their lucid dream state, shake off their shackles, and take flight.

                                                                  TRACK LISTING

                                                                  Surrealistic Forest

Two LPs and four singles in, WEIRD OMEN still evade direct comparisons to … anyone. Descriptions abound: “Primitive garage, a deluge of trash brass, reverb, and fuzzzzz”, “a crypto-hypnotic garage trance, blending ‘60s tones and psychedelic neo-garage”, and “France’s strangest garage-psych-rock trio - comprised of guitar, sax, and drums. Lost somewhere betweenThe Cramps and The Kinks”. For sound-alikes, you might look to Morphine and James Chance and the Contortions, but all this tells you is that while Weird Omen has influences like everybody else does, their sound is their own. There’s a helluva pedigree here too: King Khan & the Shrines , Bee Dee Kay & the Roller Coaster, Lost Communists, Limiñanas, We Are Not Indians, Escobar, Anomalys… Balancing between a gloomy psychedelic atmosphere and fast-paced punk energy, Weird Omen manage to make some new with the old, imposing their own unique style. Refusing to succumb to one genre only, the band bravely blends garage, exotica, rockabilly, and psych. The lineup is straightforward, if unusual; a storming rhythm section comprised of drummer Remi Pablo and guitarist Sister Ray and what can only be described as a lead baritone saxophonist, Fred Rollercoaster. Weird Omen defies the current trends of garage; or more exactly, builds upon its foundations to make something completely different out of it.

Delivered with force and ferocity from Snakerattlers. The second album from a chaotic two-piece known as Snakerattlers. Snakerattlers is a band comprising of married couple Dan Oliver Gott and Naomi Gott. It's a hellbound voyage of rockabilly, garage, and traditional gum-chewing greaser rock and roll, delivered with venom and intense bursts of raw, erratic power. Intensive, thunderous drumming. Reverb-drenched double-amped guitar. Aggressive and haunting vocals. A screaming, wailing terrifying version of the rockabilly genre. After a few small shows in 2016 to spark the fire, including a live session for BBC Radio, the band set 2017 ablaze. They played a total of 62 shows in England, Scotland, The Netherlands and Switzerland. The recorded their first album, "This Is Rattlerock" and released it though a small independent record label based in the north east of England, called Moon Skull Records.

Snakerattlers had a full-page feature in UK Rock And Roll Magazine in support of it, and their album landed to positive reviews from Louder Than War, The Punk Site and Ringmaster to name but a few. In amongst their 62 shows in 2017 were stand-out performances at "Bedlam Breakout" in September, a support slot with "The Gories" in July and a set at the legendary Swiss venue "Helsinki Club" in November. By the end of the year, the band had developed it's stagecraft, and was regularly executing a precise and intimidating live show. The band gigs relentlessly in the UK and Europe. In their two years together, Snakerattlers have completed over 150 shows, and have developed live stagecraft that has been described as "intimidating" and "an experience rather than a gig". The potent energy of their songs has been captured accurately on this latest album. It has been recorded with passion, determination and true Yorkshire grit.

                                                                      The Japanese House

                                                                      Good At Falling

With a debut album, timing is everything. Too quick, and it can fall on deaf ears, too much unknown in its significant running length. Too long, and any initial buzz has long worn off, an opportunity missed. The Japanese House, however, arrives at ‘Good At Falling’ with steady momentum, carved out over four EPs that saw her graduate from introverted, hushed bedroom pop to fleshed-out, soaring pop. On her debut album, all this progression and promise comes fantastically good.

Amber Bain’s music has always been personal, but meanings have often been shrouded under swathes of production. A world of personal upheaval during the writing and the recording of ‘Good At Falling’ meant her subject matter was unlikely to get more obtuse, but the real power of her long-awaited debut lies in the way these struggles are laid out. Throughout the record, she puts herself in the firing line and lays herself bare.

Despite the album singing of psychological torment (‘You Seemed So Happy’), dissatisfaction with the status quo (‘Follow My Girl’) and moving on from a defining relationship (‘Worms’) across the record, they’re transmitted via the poppiest music Amber has written to date. After reflecting on “Sharing a house, sharing a life, sharing a home” and how there’s “so much pressure not to be alone” in the verse of highlight ‘Worms’, when she preaches to “invest yourself in something worth investing in” in its big, bright chorus, it sounds like a message strong enough to tattoo across your chest in times when being alone feels just a bit too much to bear.   -DIYmag

The album features guest appearances from Syd, Empress Of, Amber Mark, Haim, Rostam, Robin Pecknold and Dear Nora, as well as longtime Dirty Projectors rhythm section Nat Baldwin and Mike Johnson.

‘Lamp Lit Prose’ arrives just over a year after 2017’s self-titled ‘Dirty Projectors’. Here Longstreth’s band returns with a new album that is the yang to the yin of the 2017 effort. The songs signal a page turned for Longstreth: hope instead of heartbreak, a restorative balance. Guitars have returned to the Dirty Projectors’ world, intricate vocal harmony too. ‘Lamp Lit Prose’ is a recommitment to the sounds and ideals of Dirty Projectors, embracing the band’s trademarks while pushing forward the sonic envelope.

The Jack Cades were born in late 2017 when Mike (Lead Guitar, Vocals) and Elsa (Rhythm Guitar, Vocals) decided to record some of their songs at Mole's (Drums) notorious State Records Studios in Folkestone, Kent. They invited John Gibbs (The Masonics, The Wildebeests) to record bass on some of their songs at the time, which resulted in a mini debut LP "Music for Children”. At first, the band wasn't sure if it could work full-time as everybody was pretty busy on the Garage/Soul/Freakbeat/other undefined musical genre scene. Mike, Mole, and Elsa were all in other bands (The Baron Four, The Embrooks, The Galileo 7, The Missing Souls...) But, after recording, it wasn't a difficult decision to make. It sounded too good!

The Jack Cades had to play live! They then had the brilliant idea of asking the lovely Alexandra (Speedball Jr) to join them on bass, who accepted the proposition, thankfully. The Jack Cades is a mix of a shared passion for inspirational sounds such as 1960s Garage bands, Snotty Punk from the 1970s, Sun-kissed sweaty Rhythm n' Blues, and a lot of inspirational people. If this means nothing to you, it doesn't matter. Just listen to The Jack Cades and come see them play live, as music is for the soul and the ears, not for the eyes!

RIYL - Recommended if you like The Sonics, Wau Y Los Aaarghs!!!, The Gories. One of the most dynamic groups you could wish to see, this is surely how The Sonics would sound were they were young Spainsh guys in their twenties today in the early 21st Century. Faster than a fast food order from a chick on roller skates, this is more a gang than a band, and are here to fuck shit up and die young! Spain’s garage rock kings make the craziest and noisiest Latino garage rock’n’roll music ever – a mixture of seventies punk rock and the the most fun sixties garage band sounds.

Their live shows are legendary all over Europe – whether they’re new to you or are your favourite band, they are simply irresistible. The songs are fast, loud, cheap, nasty, snotty, catchy, and sweaty…simple yet tight tunes that will stick to your head like superglue! And they really know how to translate a rock’n’roll party to a recording. As one reviewer said of their last album, “One gets a straight punch of beer-soaked realism that’s the closest thing to a reproduction of a live show... the band connects with the audience by shooting sonic adrenaline straight to the brainstem.” Like putting up a good fight or making out in the back seat of a vintage Chevy this is a band that will get your blood pumping, your heart racing, your legs jumping and leave you begging for more.

Developed through conversations between Maxime Rossi and David Toop and through support from Fondation Fiminco & MRAC, these ideas metamorphosed into the band and recordings known as DIRTY SONGS, existing both as audio recordings and audio-visual elements of Maxime Rossi’s installation Christmas On EarthContinued, exhibited at MRAC in November 2017.

DIRTY SONGS is David Toop (bass, guitar, digital electronics, VCS3 synth), Phil Minton (voices), Evan Parker (soprano and tenor saxophones), Steve Beresford (Farfisa organ, VCS3 synth), Mark Sanders (drums).

                                                                              Digging My Grave

Wild Evel brings his fuzz-guitar-meets-Screaming-Lord-Sutch brilliance out of the garage and into your living room. Being a savage kid lost in an era of uninspiring music the Staggers’ frontman, Wild Evel, teamed up in 2009 with part of former teenbeaters the Roadrunners to form a supergroup, providing serious garage punk at it’s best! Take some of Billy Childish’s trashy guitar solos, some of the Miracle Workers’ and The Stomachmouths’ catching melodies, add the “three-finger organ”, invisible monsters and cavemen and you know what these guys are up to! For sure the Trashbones have their roots in the 1960s U.S. garage punk, when teenagers started playing their own music, delivering their own ideas and ideals through tight and catchy lyrics telling the conservative society, “here we are”!

The sound, that these proto-punks produced is the same sound of the four Austrian freaks – succinct fuzz-guitars, farfisa organ, furious drumming and wild, howling vocals that represent a 100% hi-octane Rock’n’Roll attitude. Besides the sound, Wild Evel & the Trashbones also stand out with their untamed live performance for which each member pushes his plan through! On the drums you might be tempted to have found Keith Moon’s reincarnation, while Wild Evel shoulders his organ to start a solo! Since their formation in February 2009, the Trashbones have been touring from all over Europe to Russia, where they were delighted to present their distinctive sound and furious live performance at numerous club gigs and remarkable festivals. Their new album, "Digging My Grave" is 13 slices of the most fuzztasic garage punk you're ever gonna hear.

Visions Of A Life is the follow up to Wolf Alice’s 2015 Gold-selling debut album My Love Is Cool. It is fundamentally a personal album, and one of great growth for Wolf Alice. The album is incredibly broad in range, refusing to be defined by one idea. From the uncompromising 'Yuk Foo' to the infectious ‘Beautifully Unconventional' and 'Don’t Delete The Kisses’, a dizzyingly romantic track which shows their progression and maturity as songwriters. Visions Of A Life is not an album of cliches. It is packed with surprises for those who think they know Wolf Alice. A darker, bolder, more diverse release from the biggest breakthrough independent band of recent years.

It's rare that an album flows so well yet manages to encompass all of the elements Wolf Alice are so renowned for. An absolute belter.

The new Dirty Projectors song ‘Up In Hudson’ is an elegy — to the Obama years, to a generation of indie rock, and to a relationship. Over the course of nine verses and almost eight minutes, the lyrics situate David Longstreth & his band in the vivid textures of the recent past like a millennial Blood On The Tracks. It is a piece of epic storytelling unlike anything else in Dirty Projectors’ discography.

To arrive where we began and know the place for the first time: ‘Up In Hudson’ is an origin story for a new chapter of Dirty Projectors.

And with it, Dirty Projectors announce their long-awaited 7th LP.

The new album does everything we want and expect from Dirty Projectors — but in a way we never could have imagined or anticipated. In a career of surprising conceptual gambits, unexpected stylistic evolutions, and continually changing lineups — this is, as DJ Khaled says, “ANOTHER ONE”!

                                                                                STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Soulful beats, driven choruses and synthy breakdowns clash headfirst with soaring melodies, rapidly flicking from glitchy meltdowns into beautifully formed jazzy flourishes and silken harmonies. Brilliantly written and constantly evolving, a true gem.

It’s been six years since Spencer Evoy arrived in London and convened a group of frantic, hungry musicians on top of a dirty Holloway Road chicken shack to take part in a sacred mission to bring Pacific Northwest style rock’n’roll to the British public. In that time, MFC Chicken have unleashed two LPs, three singles and whole lot of mayhem on thrilled and unsuspecting audiences across Europe and beyond. The poultry-loving group have made a name for themselves, becoming one of the hottest garage rock’n’roll acts in the UK, and have thrilled sweaty crowds all across Europe with with their own red hot take on what’s been described as ‘the music the Sonics were listening to’. As one reviewer wrote, the band features ‘sax so oily it should be scooped up, whacked on yer barnet and fashioned into a DA’. After spending a good year or more honing their set and finding out which songs make the girls dance (i.e. all of them!), their debut album Music for Chicken cemented the globe-spanning gang as the finest purveyors of this style of rockin’ and rollin’ rhythm’n’blues in the land. Next came the even-better sophomore album Solid Gravy! in 2014 .

(One reviewer said, ‘This is the first record that I’ve heard this year that does strange things to my internal organs!’), and now the chicken loving public can brace themselves for the third, even more thrilling long player, because once again It’s…MFC Chicken Time! This time around the boys have once more made sure to capture the raw live sound that has driven audiences wild time and time again. They’ve chosen tracks that get folks twistin’, stompin’ and shoutin’ and laid them down to tape with plenty of their special seasoning. It’s guaranteed to get any public, private or personal party cookin’. So do you love dancing but hate contemporary music? Are you desperate to hear garage rock’n’roll really taken back to its roots? If so, then you most definitely ready for that indescribable, unstoppable Chicken sound: the latest and greatest item on the rock’n’roll dance menu.

                                                                                  Archie And The Bunkers

ARCHIE AND THE BUNKERS is Emmet on (drums/vocals) and Cullen (organ/vocals). Formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2013, the teenaged brothers began recording music in their basement, self-producing their first two EPs with a raw garage-punk sound that draws heavily from their diverse musical influences, ranging from jazz organ greats like Jimmy Smith, and Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes, to punk icons Dead Boys (they opened for original member Cheetah Chrome earlier this year), The Stooges, The Screamers, The Damned, and more. On stage, these home-schooled siblings attack their songs with a frenetic energy that whips the audience into a frenzy.

The unique growl of sixteen-year-old Cullen’s whirring, overdriven organ and the driving beat of Emmett’s four-piece drum kit leave gig-goers in shock at the sonic assault levied by a group made up of just two boys. As a local reviewer wrote, the boys “sometimes draw initial attention from a crowd because of their tender years. But their ages belie the talent and powerhouse show they put on every time they hit a stage.” The twelve songs on this, their debut album, were recorded at the famed Ghetto Recorders in Detroit, with near legendary producer/engineer Jim Diamond capturing that unique Archie sound that’s been dubbed ‘Hi-Fi Organ Punk.’ Fourteen-year-old Emmett, however, prefers to describe their sound as, ‘rock’n’roll that’s been peeled back to its raw foundation’. Having played a number of high profile gigs in recent months, including support to The Sonics at the Beachland Ballroom in their home town this summer, these kids are scorching hot and ready to break out, not just out of Cleveland, but internationally.

‘The novelty of their ages drops away the minute they begin to play,’ says Matt Fields, manager at the Beachland. ‘These guys are frickin’ stars, man. They are total pros. The first time I saw them my jaw hit the floor. Every time they play, within two songs everybody at the bar has left their seats to go stand in front of the stage to watch and listen to them. I haven't felt this strongly about a new band in a long time. They have no pretention, no inhibition. They are just having so much fun with the music. They are mind-blowing players. And such nice kids.’

While the group's early material was folk-tinged pop, they became more rock-oriented after the rhythm section joined. Clash described the band as "the lovechild of folk and grunge".The "Fluffy" single saw the band compared to Elastica and Hole, while the single's B-side, "White Leather", saw comparisons to The xx. The Observer described their sound as "an engaging strain of off-kilter indie rock".

They now unveil their debut album.

Back in 2012 Shinies broke through in a way they never would have imagined was possible. "A long way from the Fun House: Pat Sharp gets ‘beaten up and burned alive’ for music video" read the headline in the Daily Mail. An attack on nostalgia and childlike innocence, the Manchester based four piece kidnapped and toyed with everyone’s favourite mullet sporting early 90s TV idol in their video for ‘Ennui’, eventually setting him adrift upon a burning raft of fire. Shinies’ don’t do things by halves.

After a series of singles and an EP on up-and-coming label Dirty Bingo, who were the first to bring Novella and Women’s Hour to the fore, the boys return with their long awaited debut album ‘Nothing Like Something Happens Anywhere’, a line borrowed from Philip Larkin’s famous poem ‘I Remember, I Remember’. Nostalgia, memory, confusion and regret are themes that run deep throughout the Shinies catalogue so it’s no surprise that such a title was chosen. The sunrise through squinted eyes drifty narrative of Larkin’s key poem is the perfect backdrop to the swells and swirls of their impressive shoegaze-pop debut long play.

They’ve come a long way since their initial late night jams in a Manchester basement back in 2011. The DIY spirit remains but is crafted, executed and expressed better than ever before. MJ of Hookworms produced, and his stamp is understated but important, threading together narrative, a journey. This is more than just a collection of songs. It’s an etching. The story of our every day struggle for expression, for freedom, set against the monotonous hum of our zero hour contract inner city jobs.

Singer and guitar player Adam Davison’s effortless pop melodies drive the LP forward. Title track ’Nothing Like Something Happens Anywhere’ begins with the characteristic soft swell of Ric Stringer’s guitar work but unfurls surprisingly, reminding us just why we fell in love with Shinies in the first place. With the two sharing vocals throughout the record, Tom Haben on drums and Joe Fisher on bass complete the line-up. Elsewhere on the record, the lo-fi surfy ‘Beached’ screeches and screams along its rickety iron tracks and ‘6s & 7s’ shows the group breaking new ground. With its slower groove and laid bare vocal, it’s reminiscent of Yo La Tengo and Connan Mockasin, suggesting future directions.

In a time of struggle and nostalgia for a time that never was, Shinies remind us to keep our heads down and carry on.

Following the success of his mixtape, Jae is now set to release his ‘Dirty Collections’ 7”s, a series of three 7” singles, each customized with Jae’s own sketches / drawings.

Imagine the crate-digging of Madlib merged with the crash experimentalism of Aphex, the dream-telling feel of a Flying Lotus record, and the quirky and haunting imagery of vintage David Lynch. That, all bound with a sense of universal truth a la Sun Ra and Lil’ Wayne’s stream-of-consciousness abandon” - Resident Advisor

In 2007 Jeremiah Jae was noticed by producer Samiyam, who passed on his ‘Lunch Special Part 1’ to Flying Lotus. Not long after, Jae was flown to LA to work with FLyLo and was signed to Brainfeeder where he released his 1st EP and album.

This year, Jeremiah Jae signed to Warp and released his ‘Bad Jokes’ mixtape, which sent waves over the online music community from tastemakers like Pitchfork to the hip hop savants at SBTV and rapidly climbed the ‘dat piff’ chart in 24 hours.

Mentor Flying Lotus (aka Captain Murphy) has included his track ‘Evil Grin’, which was produced by Jeremiah Jae, on the biggest ever game release, ‘Grand Theft Auto 5’ (on the Fly Lo FM channel).

                                                                                    Outer Onto Other

Comprising a sixteen-strong army of collaborators, Füxa’s tenth full-length album, Dirty D, is at once a sonic celebration of creativity, and a rapturous denunciation of some of the demons of modern society. Following on swiftly from 2012’s Electric Sound of Summer (itself released after a ten year hiatus), Dirty D is a characteristically euphoric record – a largely electronic set which shifts from solarised hysteria (‘Sun is Shining’) to crepuscular elegance (‘Razzamatazz’) over the course of its dozen tracks.

The dirty ‘D’ of the title could refer to a number of disquieting facets of today’s society – the dominance of Disney, the illusion of democracy, dereliction – and, in contrast to Disney’s sickly saccharine supremacy over our children’s imaginations, Randall Nieman and his collaborators offer us an animated aural narrative which, in its playfulness and gracefulness, allows for multiple readings on the anxious social issues of our days. Dirty D’s cast of characters (which includes pedal steel hero BJ Cole, Ann Shenton of Add N to (X), and Judy Dyble of Fairport Convention) have been cherry-picked by Nieman to ensure a diversity that never feels disjointed: a genuine sonic democracy.

While Electric Sound of Summer pivoted around a number of cover versions, Dirty D comprises mostly original tracks. The opener, ‘The Blue Barracuda’, sees Nieman join circuit boards with Suki Ewers of Mazzy Star, Oliver Kersbergen of Sleepyard and Gaute Storsve of Ignore, conjuring a delicate, aquatic backdrop to accommodate Judy Dyble’s vocals. The track acts almost as an aural departure lounge before the soaring lift-off of ‘Reverse’ which, with its sister track ‘Forward’, combines Nieman’s synths and BJ Cole’s lap steel guitar to produce a pair of astonishing Country & Galactic ‘space waltzes’.

Beck, in a Spanish press conference, said: “Los Chicos are my favourite Spanish band.” Los Chicos is a five-man rock’n’roll machine constructed from the best parts of all the best components of 20th century rock’n’roll and rythm’n’blues. They put the ingredients into the mix...and then kick the livin’ shite out of it! It's a sound that, on stage, explodes into a powerful and exhuberant rock'n'roll party. Featuring a line up that makes the Cramps’ audience at Napa State look normal – a fast talking highclimbing frontman, a shaven-headed evil Doctor Pineapple, a bubble-permed bassist, and last but not least the only real twin guitar team treading the boards today, Spain’s best band gather new fans everywhere they go. It's your turn next! For this, their fifth album, recorded in the summer heat of Madrid in four days and mixed in another three by Mike Mariconda, Los Chicos have collaborated with well-respected Spanish artistes such as Josele Santiago from Los Enemigos and Hendrik Röver from Los Deltonos. There cannot be a more direct, more raw, less artificial recording available today. In the Spain of today this is the only way to deal with the problems, primarily economic, affecting Spanish society and the band members in particular: beer, good parties and much laughter. And this comes out in the recording, along with a dash of anger. And, in part thanks to the current climate, this may be the most powerful sound they’ve ever achieved.

Originally hailing from Bulgaria, Iva Moskovich, Chris Moskovich and Ursula Russell formed the band after discovering they all share a form of synaesthesia, which has led to a wildly sensual approach to playing music, their musical education being most deeply felt somewhere between the whisky drenched piano of Thelonious Monk and the crazy hazy kisses of the Flat Duo Jets.

They are best experienced live – the last six months has seen them bring their intense and sometimes chaotic act to several venues across London and the South East, including the Roundhouse, Great Escape and Somerset House. Their shows incorporate the raw energy of New York in the late 70s and the honesty of the sawdust strewn floors of jazz era bars, all channeled through an eastern European ruggedness and mysticism.

Their first single, the double A side ‘Elastic Teen Rent/I Kill Foxes’ released September 24th on Dirty Bingo Records, follows a prolific six months for the band, with their first track 'Love In Vein' capturing many ears online and on radio (Zane Lowe/John Kennedy/Mary Anne-Hobbs), and a self-released cassette packing a medley of over thirty tracks within thirty minutes. Recent support slots with the likes of Charlotte Gainsbourg and Connan Moccasin prove that they are ready to take their unpredictable ‘Junk Jazz’ to much bigger stages and audiences

Where prior Dirty Projectors albums investigated 20th-century orchestration, West-African guitar music and complex contrapuntal techniques in human voices, 'Swing Lo Magellan' is a leap forward again. It's an album of songs, an album of songwriting. 'Swing Lo Magella'n has both the handmade intimacy of a love letter and the widescreen grandeur of a blockbuster, and if that sounds like a paradox -- it's because it was until now.

'Toward The Low Sun' is the product of the most ceaselessly creative period in the band’s career, in which Jim White, Mick Turner and Warren Ellis have relentlessly made music in different permutations and locations around the globe. No other Australian band has ever impacted on international music in such a subversive fashion. This is a band that exists within itself and outside of itself, generating a massive (and massively influential) body of work.

Mick lives in Melbourne where he has built his own studio space, developed a fine reputation as a visual artist and released the Blue Trees album alongside the occasional Tren Brothers release. Jim is based out of Brooklyn but endlessly tours the world, recording and/or performing with the likes of Cat Power, Bonnie Prince Billy, Nina Nastasia and PJ Harvey. Warren resides in Paris, though is regularly to be found touring with the Bad Seeds and Grinderman or working with Nick Cave on soundtracks for such films as The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Proposition and The Road. He recently made his acting debut in the film Médée Miracle, alongside Isabelle Huppert.

Dirty Three’s live appearances over the past few years reflect the band’s standing on the international stage. All Tomorrow’s Parties invited them to curate a three day event in the UK, and the band has also played at ATP festivals in Japan, Australia and the USA.

However, all of this frantic creativity and activity is now merely an exotic backdrop to the release of the new album Toward the Low Sun. A return to the mothership was inevitable. There is a certain magic that can only be invoked when these three elements are brought together. Nothing else sounds like the Dirty Three. They are one-off phenomena. As Warren Ellis says: “There is a dialogue within the group that we are all still keen to explore”.

Toward The Low Sun is not a cosy, nice-to-be-back, return to the comfort zone. There is an energy and a raw excitement evident from the first electrifying opening moments through to the album’s finale. In Warren’s words, “Dirty Three has always been about the way we play together and feed off each other. We wanted this one to be a return to the more improvised and instinctive approach of the earlier recordings”. And indeed Toward The Low Sun sounds like a first ever recording, a punk avant-garde art-jazz record! And for all their incredible music of the past, the Dirty Three have never seemed more relevant.

Toward The Low Sun is produced by Casey Rice and Dirty Three and was recorded in Melbourne at Head Gap studios and mixed at Sing Sing.

The new set casts its net even wider than the first, corralling sonic marauders such as Germany’s Faust, New York’s wilfully shambolic Godz, George Clinton’s barrier-trampling Parliament, original folk activist Woody Guthrie and deathly 60s electronic trailblazers United States Of America. The set stretches back to primitive rock‘n‘roll‘s early salvos, including Bo Diddley and Johnny Thunders’ favourite Eddie Cochran, plus the hot-wired tremors of UK outfits such as Kilburn and the High Roads, Doctors Of Madness, Stack Waddy, Hammersmith Gorillas and the Edgar Broughton Band. New York City is represented by Patti Smith, Blondie, the mighty Jayne County, demented Holy Modal Rounders and Dizzy Gillespie representing the bebop movement which flame-blasted cool jazz’s rigid trouser-seat, leaving a wide open orifice for the raw, spiritual anarchy of Albert Ayler.

Needs also exercises his long-standing fixation with obscure, unhinged 60s US garage-psych with the Misunderstood, Zachary Thaks, Human Expression and high-energy Detroit garage bands Unrelated Segments and Tidal Waves.

                                                                                        Telekinesis

                                                                                        Dirty Thing

After his stunning self titled debut album, Michael Lerner aka Telekinesis brings you "Dirty Thing", which pays homage to the culture of Low Fidelity, Michael Lerner recorded this EP all alone with the microphone of his Macbook and "insane amounts of compression". The record's raw sound fits perfectly to its five songs: candid, straightforward and always emotional: This is exactly the kind of rock n roll-record that's become rare - just a bunch of incredibly catchy two-minute-tunes. While two of them are brand new, you'll already know the other three: "Calling All Doctors" (from the debut album - different version though), "Meaningless" ( Magnetic Fields cover) and "The Drawback" a Warsaw ( Joy Division) cover.

                                                                                          02 Meaningless

                                                                                          04 Non Toxic
                                                                                          05 The Drawback

After starting out in the city of Melbourne, Australia, The Kits relocated to London where their sound has come into its own. Their tales of crime, addiction and short-lived romances have resulted in a rapturous following and earned them support slots with The Dirtbombs, Wolfmother, The Saints and The Nightmarchers, as well as rave reviews in magazines like Kerrang and Artrocker. Taking as their starting point the days when rock’n’roll was still considered a threat to the morals of the world’s youth, The Kits are a garage rock’n’roll band at heart. They’ve taken the stomp and grit of the 50s and 60s and given it the injection of eternal youth through relentless guitar hooks and snarling vocals. Their music is for yesterday, for today, for tomorrow.

The Kits debut album "Primitive Tales" was released through Dirty Water Records late in 2008 and has gone through several pressings. Reviews said: "I Want To Hold Your Hand and Go To Hell" is the coolest song of the year. Period. I had to get that off my chest. Many make it a point to say that powerpop is garage rock with some Kinks influence and better production, but this is not garage rock. The Kits have managed to carve themselves out a nice little space somewhere between the two. The album’s catchy, loud, and has plenty of snarls, wails, and early punk styled melodic riffs; the style of music is very much like Television and The Saints with heavy guitar, but with a little more willingness to at least attempt at having something called a vocal, with melodies that knock on the early post punk of Joy Division, with a little more power, a lot more heart, and a lot less darkness.

Their latest recording session was produced by Chris Bailey (of The Saints), and the first release from these endeavours is available as seven inch vinyl. The vinyl single also features the track "Detroit Feeling" and is a limited edition release of 500 individually numbered copies, on 70gram thick red coloured vinyl.

Little Johnny Jones And The Chicago Hound Dogs

Dirty By The Dozen (Sweet Little Women) / I May Be Wrong

Little Johnny Jones leads the way on these two piano-driven blues rollers featuring Elmore James' backing band The Chicago Hound Dogs.

                                                                                          Los Chicos

We Sound Amazing But We Look Like Shit

From Madrid, Spain, this is a six-man rock’n’roll machine constructed from the best parts of real rhythm’n’blues (as opposed to the pop music that gets called “R&B” these days), raucous garage rock, gritty pub’n’punk rock...and a good measure of gospel. They put all those ingredients into the mix . . .and then kick the livin’ shite out of it. Yes, it’s their pure faith in the powers of amplification and alcohol that saw them on a previous visit to the UK get a room of 200 sinners down on to their knees before taking each and every one of ‘em straight outta the venue, and making a party in the nearby McDonalds before heading to an Indian restaurant (and really bringing rock’n’roll to the people!), leaving mayhem in their wake.

Featuring a line up that makes the Cramps’ audience at Napa State look normal – a fast talking high-climbing frontman, a half nekkid sax blower, a shaven-headed evil Doctor Pineapple, a bubble-permed bassist, and last but not least the only real twin guitar team treading the boards today. This release includes as guests, Mike Chandler of The Raunch Hands (backing vocals), Steve Greenfield of The Fleshtones and Andy G & the Roller Kings (baritone sax) on “We Sound Amazing. . .” with, on “Wreckin’ Rome”, the talented Australian Johnny Casino playing guitar. Plus the whole caboodle is produced by Mike Mariconda. These are sounds that will get any rock’n’roll party jumping!

Very limited edition (300) of a new 7" 3-track EP from Derby noiseniks Terrashima on Sickroom Gramophone Collective. Taking their name from The MC5's studio, Terrashima, their unique blend of trashy blues-based punk'n'roll owes much to the gutter rock of The Stooges and The MC5, with the contemporary dynamics of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Kyuss, the howling proto-grunge of Mudhoney and Sonic Youth, and a front-man equal parts Iggy Pop and Mark E Smith.

                                                                                              Jet

                                                                                              Dirty Sweet EP

Debut UK release from this Australian band who're causing a bit of a stir at the moment. Good old fashioned 70s style rock with a heavy Rolling Stones influence.

                                                                                                Lalo Schifrin

                                                                                                Dirty Harry

Remastered version of Lalo Schifrin's classic scores for the Dirty Harry films (includes Magnum Force and Sudden Impact as well). These are amongst the very best movie soundtracks ever recorded - jazz arrangements, fat dirty basslines, eerie strings and electric piano, plus some of the funkiest beats ever to accompany a film. Really excellent stuff - extensive sleevenotes too. First time on CD, i'd get this if I were you!
