Watchhouse

Blindfaller

Lean in to the Watchhouse (formerly known as Mandolin Orange) album, 'Blindfaller', and it’s bound to happen. You’ll suddenly pick up on the power and devastation lurking in its quietude, the doom hiding beneath its unvarnished beauty. You’ll hear the way it magnifies the intimacy at the heart of the North Carolina duo’s music, as if they created their own musical language as they recorded it. “We talked about the feel of each song and pointed out loosely who was going to be taking solos, but it was mostly a lot of fresh takes, a lot of eye contact, and a lot of nods and weird winks,” says Andrew Marlin, who anchors the band with fellow multi-instrumentalist and singer Emily Frantz. As the duo’s songwriter, Marlin sharpens his lyrical prowess here, touching on broad themes of growing older and feeling helpless in a world torn by injustice. Sure, the album sounds classic, but it is rooted in the here and now of our daily headlines.

      The Autumn Defense

      Here And Nowhere

After a ten-year break from the studio, The Autumn Defense pick up right where they left off on their long-anticipated sixth album, 'Here and Nowhere'. Infusing the band’s breezy, harmony-drenched take on Laurel Canyon with lush orchestration and psychedelic flourishes, the collection is dreamy and impressionistic, full of warm, inviting tunes as beautiful as they are bittersweet.

Like much of the group’s catalog, it’s an album full of mystery and wonder, a rich, open-hearted work that nods to everything from Nick Drake and John Martyn to Carole King and David Crosby as it contemplates the passage of time, reckoning with what we lose, what we gain, and who we become along the way. Founded by core duo John Stirratt and Pat Sansone—and now featuring longtime rhythm section James Haggerty and Greg Wieczorek—The Autumn Defense first took shape in New Orleans, where the band recorded their 2001 debut, 'The Green Hour'. While the group has at times been pigeonholed as a Wilco side project (Stirratt is a founding member, and Sansone joined around the release of 2004’s A Ghost Is Born), The Autumn Defense’s sound has always been decidedly more West Coast than alt-country, drawing comparisons to The Beach Boys, The Byrds, and Love over the course of five critically acclaimed studio albums. NPR hailed the group’s “timeless pop songs,” while Rolling Stone called their music “gorgeous” and “delightful,” and the New York Times praised their delivery as “warm and radiant.”

            Grant-Lee Phillips

            In The Hour Of Dust

Several years ago, Grant-Lee Phillips found himself wandering the elegant halls of the Norton Simon Art Museum in Pasadena, California. Amid a collection of highly detailed Indian paintings, one piece stood out. He jotted a note in his notebook, struck by both the imagery and the ominous title. That entry would eventually inspire the name of his 12th solo album: 'In the Hour of Dust'.

“A common theme throughout Indian poetry and painting,” Phillips explains, “is this concept of ‘the hour of cow dust.’ It’s that moment when cows are led home and kick up dust; a cue to prepare the lamps. Night is about to fall.” While Phillips doesn’t shy away from today’s larger societal issues, 'In the Hour of Dust' is an intimate, self-produced album. Its stripped-down musical presentation and often autobiographical lyrics reflect personal reckonings, all set “against this larger discordant backdrop.” Like many, Phillips grapples with staying afloat in the chaos of modern life. For him, songwriting is a way to push back against the encroaching dark - to light the lamps and find a path forward, for both himself and his listeners. “We can focus on all the various freedoms being threatened,” Phillips says, “things we might’ve taken for granted a year or two ago. But eventually, it comes back to very human, primal things. I don’t see songs of love and songs of protest as that far apart. It’s all about recognizing the value of connection in a disconnected time.”
