8 Years Of Blur Records Vol 1

Now marking eight years in the underground, Blur Records delivers a various artist collection that reflects its sound across always floor-facing cuts across a house and disco spectrum tinged with retro flair. 'Back To The Disco' by Hotmood opens with big loops and a hands in the air grove that is high on funky-disco vibes, while Delfonic keeps things tight on 'Let's Do The Magic' which centres a vocal hook and busy chords. Elsewhere, Crackazat's sultry rework of Scruscru's 'Just House' adds a jazz-leaning touch and 'Touch Me' shifts into a more restrained, late-night mood. Closing with the deep, plump drums of Sven Wegner's sexy, sax-laced 'Chuck The Boom', the collection stays consistently accessible and groovy throughout.

Tony Humphries

Running Back Mastermix: Kiss FM Zanzibar Years

Telling a tale of house music’s early days or roots without mentioning Tony Humphries as a club DJ, remixer and radio disc jockey would make it an incomplete, forged and most of all a bit of a yawn.

Born in Brooklyn in 1957, Humphries’ musical journey is synonymous with New York City’s dance music history and the evolution from uptempo soul music to house: from being a dancer at David Mancuso’s infamous Loft parties to becoming a mobile DJ and getting the call from Shep Pettibone to become his right hand at the then new Kiss FM radio station, followed by countless remix offers and a legendary residency at Newark’s Club Zanzibar.

Next to that one, it was especially his work as a radio disc jockey for said station during most of the 1980s until 1994 that gave him majestic clout. Breaking new records week in, week out, putting New Jersey acts like Adeva and Jomanda or countless up-and-coming producers from there on the musical map, while simultaneously playing the hottest imports from Europe, trax from Chicago, dance classics and all things straight from New York’s music factory that never seemed to stop. Going to his vast and almost complete archive of radio shows from way back when he graced those airwaves, we at Running Back Records have picked original recordings that symbolize his importance as an industry giant and ambassador of this style of music.

„But one thing I would like to point out is that, as a DJ, the music I play is not my music. I want to make it perfectly clear that it is music that is released, and it’s everyone’s music. I do not take any other credit than being the middle person exposing this music.“ (Tony Humphries in: What Kind of House Party Is This?, Jonathan Fleming, 1996)

Gala announce "Ten Years of Gala" - a compilation marking a decade of independent culture featuring: Yu Su, Marcellus Pittman, Dreamcast, Chaos in the cbd Amaliah, Kink, Call Super and more

Ten Years of Gala" is both an archive and a horizon: a reflection on where Gala has come from, and a signal of what lies ahead.

Founded in 2016 as a one-day gathering in South London, Gala has grown into a global point of reference for dancers, artists and collectives drawn together by a shared commitment to independence, collaboration and underground music culture. Rather than charting success through scale alone, the festival has consistently prioritised integrity, community and musical curiosity – values that underpin this release.

Spanning fifteen tracks, "Ten Years of Gala" unfolds as a considered journey. It opens with an intimate spoken contribution from Charlie Dark, grounding the compilation firmly in Gala’s home of Peckham before gradually expanding outward into fuller, club-focused terrain. From there, the record moves between moods and tempos, tracing a path from reflective moments into the physical language of the dancefloor.

The compilation brings together longtime friends of the festival alongside newer voices drawn into its orbit in recent years. Each artist contributes a distinct perspective, but collectively the tracks form a coherent portrait – not of a single sound, but of a shared ethos shaped over ten years of gatherings, collaborations and days spent dancing together.

Rather than a retrospective in the conventional sense, "Ten Years of Gala" functions as a living document. It captures fragments of past editions, scenes and relationships, while remaining firmly oriented toward the future. These are not museum pieces, but records designed to be played, shared and folded back into the spaces from which they came.

Together, the compilation holds a piece of Gala’s first decade – not as a closed chapter, but as a foundation for what comes next.

The Early Years

Modern Moonlight

The Early Years' new album, ‘Modern Moonlight’. It’s their first in a decade and just their third in 20 years, following their eponymous debut for Beggars Banquet in 2006 and ‘II’, which was released on Sonic Cathedral in 2016 and recently named as one of Uncut’s Greatest Albums of the 2010s.

It was worth the wait. It’s a stunning mix of Davids Bowie and Byrne, John Cage, Conny Plank, Brian Eno, Radiohead. “All the usual stuff,” says nominal frontman Dave Malkinson. “Loved ones and Italian red wine played a part, too, Oblique Strategies…”

There is nothing particularly oblique about the ten tracks here, though. ‘A New Way Of Living’ is a nod to not only Berlin-era Bowie, but also their own single ‘Like A Suicide’, the band’s first release for Sonic Cathedral back in 2008. The febrile funk of ‘Get Up Get Out’ is like The Stooges recoding the DNA of ‘Here Come The Warm Jets’. ‘The River’ – which snuck out as a single late last year – aims for an Eno / Moroder cross, but ends up sounding like James Holden. ‘Heaven Over There’ is huge and heartbreaking, a ballad for our times, up there with The Verve or even Elbow at their most anthemic and vulnerable. ‘Tired Eyes’, meanwhile, recalls ‘Fading Frontier’-era Deerhunter.

The start of the second half ups the tempo. ‘Shimmering Stone’ mixes LCD Soundsystem with what sounds like Gregorian chants. ‘The Gift’ sounds like a party in a studio, which it was, recorded at Monnow Valley in South Wales. ‘Three Quarters’ is a Beta Band meets A Certain Ratio-style groove based around a simple Steve Reich-esque loop with timbales. The title track is inspired by the more acoustic Verve tracks on ‘No Come Down’ and closer ‘Silver Lips (Champagne Eyes)’ sparkles and fizzes across its two halves, with vocals by Lorena Quintanilla from labelmates Lorelle Meets The Obsolete.

“I wanted the album to be called ‘III’, but the others vetoed that,” says guitarist Roger Mackin. “‘Modern Moonlight’ came about at 2am when we were writing the song.”

“Heroes don’t stand in sunlight anymore, they stand in the bluish glare of a phone at 2am wondering if anyone else is listening or even awake,” expands drummer Phil Raines. “Moonlight is not a thing, it’s a condition, light that has already touched something else. It’s borrowed. Reflected. Slightly late. It is the expectation of the present arriving after we’ve moved.

“So, this is not about our moon. It’s about how we’re all responding to the world we’ve found ourselves living in, hoping for utopia, but realising we’re all late to the party.”

In the case of ‘Modern Moonlight’, it’s better late than never.

X-Ray Spex

Obsessed With You (The Early Years) - 2026 Reissue

'Obsessed With You (The Early Years)' is an official release of the early X-Ray Spex demo recordings which would evolve into the celebrated pioneering 'Germ Free Adolescents' album. Also includes early versions of classic Punk pioneering debut single tracks 'Oh Bondage, Up Yours!' and 'I Am A Cliché’.

Recorded in 1977, the majority of these recordings feature original saxophonist Lora Logic and capture the raw instinctive power of the band who seemed to arrive fully formed despite their youth. The iconic vocal stylings of Poly Styrene immortalised here are even more visceral than what was recorded for the final product and further indicate just how much inspiration they lent Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna and the Riot Grrrls that followed. Elsewhere, an early take on 'Germ Free Adolescence' has subtle electronic influences that hint at a potential future the band didn't hang around long enough to fulfil.

The Pale Fountains

The Complete Virgin Years - 2026 Repress

• The Pale Fountains were an English band formed in Liverpool in 1980, and composed of Mick Head, Chris McCaffery, Thomas Whelan, Andy Diagram and Ken Moss.

• Inspired by 1960s music such as Love, Burt Bacharach and The Beatles, the group released their debut single ‘(There's Always) Something on My Mind’ in October 1982. Although the Pale Fountains failed to make much commercial headway, the band would earn critical praise for the two albums released on Virgin, ‘Pacific Street’ (1984) and ‘...From Across the Kitchen Table’ (1985).

This 4-CD box set brings together both albums as well as all the B-Sides, mixes, and some previously unreleased material from the Virgin vaults all housed in a sturdy box with extensive sleeve notes by Classic Pop’s John Earls.

Mick Head – Vocals, Guitar (1981–1987)
Chris McCaffery – Bass Guitar (1981–1987)
Thomas Whelan – Drums (1981–1987)
Andy Diagram – Trumpet (1982–1984)
John Head – Guitar (1984–1987)

Twenty Years Deep

Founded in 2006 by broadcaster, DJ, and cultural tastemaker Gilles Peterson, Brownswood has spent the last 20 years championing forward-thinking artists who sit just left of centre: rooted in Afro-diasporic music, but never confined by genre. Twenty Years Deep is a snapshot of that journey: a carefully curated collection spanning the label’s early breakthroughs, cult classics, and defining moments.

'Twenty Years Deep' brings together tracks that reflect Brownswood’s long-standing commitment to artistic freedom, musical lineage, and future-facing sounds. From deep jazz explorations and dancefloor mutations to global collaborations and genre-defying hybrids, the compilation captures the connective thread that has defined the label since day one: trust in artists and belief in music that lasts.

Rather than a greatest-hits exercise, Twenty Years Deep functions as an archive and a statement documenting how Brownswood has maintained its own point of view. By following a highly instinctive approach to A&R the label has shaped music culture, introduced new voices, and built a catalogue that continues to resonate well beyond release cycles.

Manchester Scene Stories Book 1: The Dance Years

A raw, intimate journey through Manchester’s dance music history — told by the people who lived it.

From breakdancers on lino floors to the birth of Acid House, from the Haçienda’s hedonistic nights to the underground parties that defined a generation, Manchester Scene Stories: The Dance Years captures the heartbeat of a city in motion.

Documentary storyteller Paul Banks has interviewed more than 100 DJs, dancers, ravers, promoters, and unsung legends. This book brings 30 of their most powerful stories together — unfiltered, emotional, funny, and full of the spirit that shaped Manchester’s nightlife.

Featuring first-hand accounts from the Haçienda, Paradise Factory, The Boardwalk, warehouse raves, breakdance crews, Canal Street pioneers and more — these are the memories that built a scene, changed lives, and still echo through the city today.

Paul Banks

Manchester Scene Stories Book 2: The Indie Years

This book is a collection of conversations about Manchester — told by the people who lived it.

Following on from Manchester Scene Stories: The Dance Years, this volume leans towards indie, but doesn’t stick to neat categories or timelines. Instead, it moves through the 1960s, 70s, 80s and beyond, guided by memory, chance meetings, and the way scenes actually form in real life.

The chapters are built around relaxed conversations rather than formal interviews. Some were recorded for my YouTube channel, others specifically for this book. They took place in pubs, living rooms, studios, and over Zoom. People talk openly — about music, clubs, bands, friendships, venues, and the strange routes that led them where they ended up.

The book begins with Johnny Roadhouse, a shop that quietly shaped generations of Manchester musicians, and ends in the present day with a new generation still finding its voice. Along the way, it captures moments that rarely make it into official histories — the small rooms, early gigs, chance encounters, and personal turning points that define a scene long before it becomes a headline.

This isn’t a definitive history of Manchester indie music.

It’s something closer to how it actually felt at the time.

Short, honest chapters you can dip into — built from memory, conversation, and lived experience.

Paul Rees

Raised On Radio : Power Ballads, Cocaine And Payola: The AOR Glory Years 1976-1986

There is no form of American-made music that has been as critically derided, or shunned, as AOR. The blues, punk, hip-hop, alt-rock, country-rock, R&B, jazz, rock 'n' roll and soul. All are canonised.

Trad country and disco have long since been re-appraised. Even hair metal has its champions. Yet there has hardly been a positive critical word published about AOR.

But this speaks far more to the prejudices and blind spots of music critics than it does about the actual music. The plain fact is, AOR artists were responsible for some of the hugest selling and timeless records of the era. Five bands stand tall as AOR's leading lights: Journey, Boston, Foreigner, Toto and REO Speedwagon.

Between them, they have to date sold over 335 million records worldwide. Aside from these five bands, there is then a second tier of multi-platinum AOR acts and including the likes of Styx, Survivor, Pat Benatar, Heart, Kansas, Bryan Adams, Loverboy, Night Ranger, Billy Squier and more. During the period covering 1976-1986, AOR was inarguably the music of the American heartland.

AOR stood out by its luxurious productions, its sumptuous harmonies, and its lovelorn ballads. Then again, by its lyrical pre-occupations - essentially, the heartbreak of unrequited love, and/or pumped-up anthems to American positivity. Typically, AOR songs are set on long, hot summer nights, or else to a backdrop of glittering city lights.

They evoke vivid technicolour images of gleaming cityscapes and roaring down sun-scorched freeways in an open-top convertible. Like disco, but not punk, AOR was inclusive, uplifting, and appealed equally to both sexes. Its sheer romanticism, its cinematic sense of possibility, resonated as much with a huge audience of women as it did with men.

It was positive, never nihilistic. Music to be sung along with, not to break stuff to. Its songs were made to soundtrack the best of times, or at least to soothe the bad.

It's time for a definitive music history of AOR, told through some of the genre's finest contributors.

15 Years Of Leng Records (2010-2025)

When Leng Records founders Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy and Simon Purnell marked the imprint’s 10th birthday, they did so via a celebratory compilation that mixed classic catalogue cuts, remixes and exclusives. Five years on, and with the label’s 15th birthday upon us, they’ve decided to look to the future via a compilation made up entirely of fresh productions from Leng’s roster of current and new artists.

Presented on limited-edition gatefold double vinyl with a bonus 10” single, the collection offers an updated showcase of Leng’s much-loved trademark sound, a distinctive fusion of mid-tempo sleazy-disco, Balearica and chugging house interspersed with elements of electronic psychedelia and synth-powered space disco.

Fittingly for a compilation that wholeheartedly looks to the future, you’ll find first contributions from a handful of label newcomers. Fast-rising duo Flying Mojito Bros give their spin on ‘Smoke Signals’ by label debutants Joe Harvey-Whyte and Bobby Lee, turning in a heady and inspired revision that sits somewhere between dusk-ready cosmic disco and flash-fried desert blues. There’s also an appearance from Swedish producer Bo Wosticz with the dreamy and ultra-deep nu-jazz of ‘Bs As’.

Naturally, you’ll also find plenty of heat from those who have already proved their mettle through prior releases on Leng. Danish duo Liminal, who made their debut earlier this year with the much-played ‘Keep Coming Back To Me’, open proceedings with the tactile, slow-disco flex of ‘Tzatziki Bay’ where sweet synth melodies and a heady electric piano riff ride a warming groove.

Roberto Intrallazzi and Dario Piana from Italy’s original Afro-cosmic movement return with ‘Plutos’, a typically deep dubbed-out cosmic chugger. Then there’s Rose Robinson AKA Tigerbalm, whose ‘Mexicana’ featuring singer Joi N’Juno is presented across the package in two different forms. Pete Herbert, who contributed to some of the earliest Leng releases, drops a driving dub disco take on the main compilation, while Robinson’s original mix – a more organic, percussive and horn-heavy affair blessed with plenty of hallucinatory intent – opens the bonus 10”.

There’s a welcome return to Leng for the brilliant Payfone, whose ‘Dime Algo’ is a typically classy, analogue-rich affair in which attractive Rhodes riffs, atmospheric female vocals and pitched-down house pianos rise above shuffling drum machine beats and a slow-motion bassline. Long-serving label contributor Lex (Athens) delivers the loose-limbed nu-disco breeze of ‘Stolen Dance’, while the imprint’s San Francisco connection ¬– the ever-brilliant 40 Thieves collective – drop the dubbed-out Bay Area brilliance of ‘Such A Great Trip’.

Then there are the contributions of the label’s most storied artist, Andrew Meecham AKA Emperor Machine with ‘Eumig’, a deliciously slow, synth-rich chugger full of colourful chords, bubbly electronic melodies and jaunty electronic bass. Then, to round off the bonus 10” single, Meecham joins forces with Paul Murphy (as Mudd) on ‘Road To Nikko’, an extended, Japanese musical culture-influenced slab of pitched-down alien-funk packed to the rafters with squelchy synth sounds, effects-laden percussion, chiming melodies and rubbery bass guitar.

Tangerine Dream

50 Years Of Phaedra : At The Barbican

What began as an experimental session at Richard Branson's Manor Studios in Oxfordshire became a seismic event in modern sound. Using the Moog sequencer for the first time, Tangerine Dream - then comprised of Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke & Peter Baumann - crafted 'Phaedra', an album that shimmered with innovation, mystery & a palpable sense of discovery.

Half a century later, Tangerine Dream returned to London's Barbican to honour that landmark work - reimagining it for a new era. Across its three vinyl LPs, '50 Years Of Phaedra: At The Barbican' captures this transcendent live performance, in which the current line- up - Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Yamane & Paul Frick - revisit the spirit of 'Phaedra' with the very tools that Froese & his collaborators helped pioneer.

15 Years Of Butter Sessions - Disc One

A new chapter in Butter Sessions' ongoing Japanese exchange sees Sapporo sound sculptor Kuniyukire-opening a 2015 tour collaboration with label heads Sleep D- a deep, spatial beatdown powered by dub pressure and percussive hypnosis. Shadow-lurking prodigy Mosam Howiesondrops in with his trademark scatterbrain techno, while Hasvat Informantlocks into joint-consciousness big-room radioactivity.

We're adrift until Sunju Hargunlights the beacon with スカイサーファ(Sky Surfer), Thailand's emissary of ritualistic minimal trance.

On the flip, Boorloo's Guy Contact rolls out Dance In The Grey, a shadowy prog churn pitched between new-romantic vocal sheen and EBM muscle, with Kate Miller completely rewiring the script on Sub Series E - a masterfully minimal, double-time meditation. suki presents his Sniper1 alias to close with a demonic body-jacking groove loaded for the system.

Disco Pogo

Bugged Out - It's Just A Big Disco (30 Years Of The Seminal Club)

To celebrate Bugged Out’s 30th anniversary, Disco Pogo has produced a book dedicated to the legendary club night - one of the UK’s most formative and enduring.

Edited by Bugged Out promoter Johnno Burgess, the book features new interviews with regular guest DJs including The Chemical Brothers, Erol Alkan, Tiga, Miss Kittin, Hot Chip, and 2manydjs. It also comprises oral histories written by journalists including Jim Butler, Ralph Moore, Luke Bainbridge, and Johnno himself, charting the club’s pivotal periods: Manchester’s Sankeys Soap in the 1990s, Liverpool’s Nation in the ‘90s and ‘00s, The End in London during the 2000s, and their much-loved five-year run of Weekenders at Butlin’s in the 2010s.

The book is not only a history of Bugged Out but also a chronicle of UK club culture from the mid-1990s to the present day. Told era by era, it reflects shifting fashions - from the utilitarian workwear of the ’90s, to the flamboyant electroclash era, to the neon excess of new rave - as well as the growing dominance of photography, evolving from a handful of disposable 'fun camera' shots to today’s flood of professional images in the Instagram age.

It is equally a story of the highs and lows of running a club night: from the exhilaration of seeing an idea grow from a 600 capacity club in Manchester in 1994 into a sold-out 12,000-capacity 30th-birthday party in London last year, to the painful, financial losses that came from significant failures.

The narrative is punctuated with idiosyncratic anecdotes: the time Daft Punk may or may not have played in Ibiza; Miss Kittin tearing up the rule book one night in Heaven; or Erol Alkan making his first unforgettable appearance in what he called “a proper club”.
'It’s Just A Big Disco' - named after one of the club’s iconic slogans - features hundreds of flyers and lineups, alongside photography by acclaimed event photographers including Luke Dyson, Mark McNulty, Tom Horton and Alistair Allan, plus candid snaps from friends and clubbers and a portrait of Miss Kittin by Wolfgang Tillmans.

Young Fathers

28 Years Later (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

From BRIT-nominated and Mercury-Prize winning Young Fathers comes their critically acclaimed score for 28 Years Later, the latest instalment of the cult franchise – now available for the first time on vinyl.

The Scottish progressive hip hop group bring an electrifying blend of original vocal tracks and instrumental score to the album, released in full across two translucent, blood red vinyl. Featured are fan-favourite tracks ‘Promised Land’, ‘Causeway’ and ‘Boots’ – the latter incorporating the words of Rudyard Kipling’s wartime poem, used to terrifying effect. The double-vinyl also includes a printed gatefold, disc labels and sleeves with haunting imagery from the film.

Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, 28 Years Later stars Aaron Taylor Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Alfie Williams, and follows a group of survivors decades after the first 28 film, now navigating a vastly different post-apocalyptic world of secrets and horrors.

The Boomtown Rats

The First 50 Years: Songs Of Boomtown Glory

The Boomtown Rats were one of the most successful bands of the 1970s in the UK. Their grown-up new wave and real time stories captured the imagination of a mass audience. As the leader of The Rats, Bob Geldof led his band of Dublin post-punkers right to the very top of the UK charts with UK No.1s 'Rat Trap' and 'I Don’t Like Monday’s'.

In its gatefold sleeve with brand new artwork and commentary, all tracks have been selected by the band themselves. Released to coincide with their 50th anniversary tour, this is the very best of the Boomtown Rats and a one-stop shop of their words and melodies.

10 years ago in 2015, The Golden Lion in Todmorden opened its doors under the guidance of Gig & Waka, Cloudwater brewed their first ever beers, the dance floors of Manchester got introduced to the world of Supernature Disco and from his spare room at home in Bolton Chris Massey started Sprechen.

What followed over the next decade has been a wild ride of amazing people, memorable (though fuzzy!) parties, creativity, art, expression, performance and at the centre of it all of course, the music.
Sprechen has never been one style or sound. A reflection of varied musical tastes without any limitations of style or genres, just a passion to share good music.
Over the last decade, Sprechen has been lucky enough to both work with and meet many like-minded cosmic creatives that share this mindset and that have all played a major role in the story.

Ein Null is a collection of original tracks from some of Sprechen's nearest & dearest who, for the last 10 years, have helped shaped the label via releases, remixes or performing at events.
It's wonky & weird, banging & beautiful, cosmic & consciousness-expanding and it continues to connect the invisible dots of club music and more abstract listening experiences.

From basements & beyond to sunsets & psychedelic socials...we are pleased to present this electronically charged selection of soundscapes courtesy of like-minded musical humans including; The Utopia Strong, A Certain Ratio, Lena C., Gina Breeze, Low Pulse, Psychederek, Lindstrøm, Supernature Disco, PBR Streetgang and of course Chris Massey.

Limited to a run of 300 vinyl with double-sided screen-printed sleeve.

Cold Cave

Cherish The Light Years - 2025 Reissue

Released in 2010 on Matador Records, 'Cherish The Light Years' is Cold Cave’s bold leap into dark stadium pop — an album where post-punk intensity collides with melodic noise, industrial beats, Italo dance euphoria, and moments of pure pop bliss.

Recorded at Electric Lady and DFA’s Plantain Studios in NYC, Cherish channels the drama of Siouxsie and the Banshees, the pulse of early Depeche Mode, and the emotional gravity of love, regret, triumph, and failure. With tracks like 'Confetti', 'The Great Pan Is Dead', 'Underworld USA', and 'Villains of the Moon', Cold Cave emerged in a moment with no obvious scene, forging a sound and space entirely their own.

The Early Years - 2025 Reissue

Ireland’s favourite Avant-punk quartet has re-issued 'The Early Years' EP, a collection of out of print 7” singles and covers originally released on Any Other City Records and The Quarter Inch Collective and then on Rough Trade in 2015. 'The Cha Cha Cha' has now been remastered alongside the rest of the tracks and is ready for the dancefloor once again.

Fan fave (and live setlist staple) featured on the collection is an eight-minute cover of post-dubstep mastermind Blawan’s absurdist banger and demented earworm 'Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage' that, simply put, is unlike anything you’ve ever heard before or since

A Thousand Years In Another Way

“Evil is very real and having its way, and love is also real and hasn’t lost yet.”

That’s how Activity’s Travis Johnson described their third album, 'A Thousand Years In Another Way'. A friend had asked why these songs seemed to capture the strange, heavy feeling of being alive right now better than anything else—and that was his answer. The album doesn’t try to explain this time we’re living in; it simply feels like it. It’s a mix of violence, alienation, and tenderness—reflecting the surreal, dreamlike (or nightmarish) rhythm of daily life.

Across ten songs, Activity blends experimental rock, electronics, and found sounds with a sense of paranoia, flickers of hope, and a warped reality. Working with producer Jeff Berner (of Psychic TV), the band manipulated sounds and played with room acoustics to create a feeling that’s disorienting—like the air is thick and the walls are listening.

Coming out of a period of uncertainty, the Brooklyn-based quartet—Travis Johnson, Jess Rees, Bri DiGioia, and Steven Levine—pieced the album together from fragments: clipped samples, looping guitar lines, ghostly melodies. Rees, DiGioia, and Johnson share vocal and writing duties, shaping a record that feels both deeply personal and strangely alien. There’s a constant sense that things could shift or fall apart at any second—nothing stays one thing for long.

'A Thousand Years In Another Way' might not offer answers, but it captures the feeling of right now better than most. And maybe, it sounds a bit like your world too.

Xmal Deutschland

Gift (The 4AD Years)

The extraordinary impact Xmal Deutschland had upon British audiences in the early Eighties is difficult to convey forty years on. A spell was cast by the staccato rhythms, unmediated channels and mysterious (to us) language of their music, and by the vision and strength of the women involved. Their breakthrough support slot with Cocteau Twins and first two albums with 4AD dazzled and dug deep, speaking in tones and temperatures unlike any band before or since. “And at some point, it seemed to people we just...disappeared”, muses singer Anja Huwe. “So this myth of Xmal Deutschland just got bigger and bigger over the years…”

'Gift', which will fascinate newcomers just as it feeds the faithful, is brimming with presence. And if the word “gift” in German slyly relates to a kind of poison, nobody said this music was all sweetness and light. Even if its radiance resonates, four decades later. Xmal Deutschland’s 4AD years were a bold and bewitching boomerang. The magic’s back.

We're not doing this for self-indulgent reasons. This book and record package was conceived as an opportunity to praise, shine a light on and above all else show gratitude to all the artists we've worked so closely with over the last 10 years. But not just the artists - all of the amazing people who form part of the wider Be With family.

Without question, this package represents the most exciting, daunting and rewarding thing that the label has ever put together. Some time in 2023, we had the idea that 2024 should feature some special releases, events and, well, "things". The "thing" is the very book and record you're reading about. Thanks to the brother Jim - writer and editor of the very thing - for suggesting we do a book. (I thought he was joking). Anyway, how could Be With do a book, shaped like a record sleeve and sized the same, without including a record inside to complete a very special package of "Be Withness"?

THE RECORD: JOYRIDE
10 tracks for 10 Years of Be With from 10 of our favourite artists we've ever worked with over the past decade. As a happily "all over the place" label, the music, accordingly, had to be varied in vibe and style.

We start with a gorgeous acoustic folk track from Thomas Almqvist. I first heard this when our dear friend Andre Allday - who first suggested and then facilitated the Nyanser reissue - played it during our release party for the record at the amazing Hosoi in Stockholm. As something to grab your attention from the off, it's a pretty good opener, I reckon - it'll stop you in your tracks.

We move into an almost totally "lost" Lewis Taylor track, known to and beloved by only his hardest of hardcore fans. Before now, it has only ever seen the light of day on some obscure late 90s CD of "lullabies" compiled by Joan Armatrading. Us neither!

Mic Murphy from Sass/The Mighty Soulmates/The System (!!!) allowed us to use an unreleased track from his mysterious late 90s period. He sent over 7 stunning tracks and, over breakfast one winter morning with my two sons, Rocco and Bruno, the 3 of us selected the track that made us bounce the most while chomping on our cereal.

In deep fall of 2023, myself and Steven (The Funky Paramedic™) had the great pleasure of visiting Tony Henry, leader of the legendary Manchester 80s soul-funk act 52nd Street (those who "put the dance into Factory") to speak some more about a forthcoming retrospective that's been in the works for 5 years now. Fear not - it's coming! Anyway, we went into Tony's amazing studio and he played us the track you hear, here. A demo originally meant for Phyllis Hyman (I mean, come on!), he's very kindly let us use it for this record. A thousand thank yous. It's sensational.

Side A closes out with an elegant exclusive from our favourite Japanese duo, Coastlines, a tropical jazz-funk-fusion track that only they can so effortlessly craft. Sublime.

Side B opens with another total exclusive, and the title track of this compilation. "Joyride" is like some kind of swinging, G-Funk library from the Californian master of modern cinematic soul - Maston. We love everything about this dude. Speaking of California, next up is possibly the coolest ex-pat Manc in all of the Golden State.

Kenny Dickenson's instant classic "Stupid Rain" knocked me out the first time I heard it. The way it starts as a beautifully ornate ambient piece before introducing the barest of pulses to then segue into a full slo-mo cosmic chugger just gets me every time. Man's a genius.

Our great friends from Wilco, Pat and John, comprise The Autumn Defense. Two of the nicest humans in the game and "Bluebirds Fall" is chiming folk-rock at its finest. What they do best and, beyond a tiny-run CD EP decades ago, this is the only way to own this majestic stunner.

Stimulator Jones is a Stones Throw artist who we've loved ever since the epochal "Soon Never Comes" graced our ears. We're putting out his archive beats and when I asked if he had anything fresh that hadn't yet found a home, he sent over a modern / spiritual jazz movement that just blew me away. It's here.

We round out the compilation with a staccato funk-rock track from a Prince alumnus, the one and only Andre Cymone. If this track isn't blasting from radio stations from Dublab to Gilles to NTS then there's no justice in the world.

Of course, as is our way, none of these tracks have ever appeared on vinyl before. This is the only way to own them on wax. Pretty cool. As ever, all we ever want to hear is music with soul and personality. And that's what's contained here. We think we've nailed it. We think you'll like it too.

THE BOOK: LABOUR OF LOVE
Created in conjunction with the editor and design team behind Disco Pogo, Labour Of Love is our first ever book and serves as a brilliantly rich and varied document of Be With's first 10 years. It surveys our entire catalogue with the artwork for every single release faithfully reproduced in full colour accompanied by Rob's inimitable reviews.

The book contains fresh, exclusive interviews with Ned Doheny, Leon Ware, Lewis Taylor, Tommy Guerrero, Wally Badarou, Steve Moore, Pete Fowler, Kimiko Kasai, Tony Henry (52nd Street), The Autumn Defense, Coastlines and The Mighty Soulmates.

There's also fantastic contributions from a whole host of well regarded fans of the label. We have Gilles Peterson on Ned, Trevor Jackson on Nucleus, Efficient Space on Steve Hiett and the joy of collaboration in a competitive industry, Bill Brewster on Marti Caine, Balearic Mike on Kylie and Lou Hayter on her beloved Air.

We explore the development of the Be With logo and also take an insider's look at the journey of a typical Be With record; from the mastering stage with Simon Francis, cutting it up with Cicely Balston, the artwork ordeals with Chris Stevenson, pressing matters with Record Industry, slinging product with ace distributors Word And Sound, stocking product with our favourite London record shop When Spaceships Appear and even packing records for direct orders with our very own Funky Paramedic.

There's also an irreverent look at the legendary Reissue Request Line over on Facebook, with many hints at things to come.

Leeroy Thornhill

Wildfire : My Ten Years Getting High In The Prodigy

Wildfire tells the story of the first decade of The Prodigy from the perspective of original member Leeroy Thornhill, fully illustrated with entirely unseen photography from the earliest raves, to Japan and the United States in the late '90s, by which point the band were one of the biggest on the planet. Rave pioneers whose sound also encompassed hip hop, punk and rock, The Prodigy arguably had as much influence on contemporary pop culture as the Sex Pistols and these extraordinary images from Leeroy's personal archives capture the wild energy, ecstasy and abandon from the moment they dropped their first hit 'Charly' through the three albums which became the ubiquitous soundtrack to the decade: Experience, Music for the Jilted Generation and Fat of the Land. Beautifully designed in five colours with archival ephemera, and contextualised by Leeroy himself with candid and often hilarious stories describing the band's wild adventures and eccentric encounters as their fame and popularity spread 'like wildfire', this is the ultimate visual journey into the world of the original 'electronic punks'.

The Men They Couldn't Hang

The Magnificent 40: 40 Years In 40 Songs

TMTCH stumbled into existence onstage at the Alternative Country Festival, Electric Ballroom, Camden on Easter Sunday in 1984; after a long afternoon busking and drinking in a Hammersmith subway. They knew three chords and a hundred songs all of which sounded a bit the same, a frenzied skiffle that was exciting to jump around and drink snakebite to. If they thought about longevity at all, a lifespan of 40 days seemed most likely. It’s forty years later and they are still running. Since those early days, and without much of a game plan other than always stepping onward, TMTCH have released around 20 albums plus many side projects, bootlegs, curios and an unknown number of T shirts. They’ve toured constantly, whether in dingy pub backrooms or Grand Ballrooms and Festival Stages. From Cairo to Reykjavik and all points in between, the TMTCH roadshow has shambled and thrilled through the decades, always passionate, always literate, occasionally dishevelled.

Forty years of recording has spawned a vast back catalogue, well represented here by songs from each album, style and era; a tapestry of human stories and vibrant characters. So there are the fast sprints like early folk hoedown ‘Ironmasters’, the frantic shanty ‘Raising Hell’ and the amphetamine punk blues of ‘Going Back to Coventry’. Then there are the waltzing folk ballads, from their impassioned version of the anti war standard ‘Green Fields Of France’ to the bitter regret of ‘The Bells’ and the righteous testimony of ‘Our Day’. Elsewhere there are anthems galore; ‘The Crest’ a swirling gaelic chant, ‘Rosettes’, a fast marching assault of drums, fiddles and mandolins; historical epics such as ‘Ghosts Of Cable Street’, ‘Shirt of Blue’ and ‘The Colours’; romantic ballads like the wistful ‘Parted From You’ and ‘Island in The Rain’.

All the eras are here; from the wiry lo fi of the first album, through the eighties into full blown MTV ready multi trackers with vast charging drums; the initial simplicity of their recipe deepening and darkening. And then on through the nineties, noughties and tens; always the double pronged vocals drifting between harmony and unison, always the celtic, folk and country tones vying for attention, the emotive fiddle, the top end mandolin above the thundering rhythm section. On through bouffant hair, spiky hair, dyed hair, thin hair and hats; on through Grunge, Baggy, Madchester, Rave, Britpop. On through the Miner’s Strike, Poll Tax, New Labour, Iraq and Brexit. On through marriage, children, loss and revival. Forty years at the working end of rock and roll is a feat achieved by very few bands. It requires tremendous chemistry, a deep catalogue; both panoramic and miniature, a vital and irrepressible energy, all of which is on resplendent display in this sprawling 3 disc compilation. But most of all it requires an intense resilience, something that TMTCH possess in spades. Forty years on the run; was ever a band so aptly named?

Madala Kunene

1990: The Hidden Years Recording

Madala Kunene (better known to his friends as Bafo) blends Zulu folk with township blues to produce a unique hybrid and contemporary music he calls "Madala-line"

Apart from his own colourful life- experiences Madala often uses traditional songs, nursery rhymes and lullabies as the basis for his material. His highly spiritual music is guided by the mood, moment and the experience he brings to his playing. Most compositions are inspired by dreams and messages from the ancestral realm as well as the teachings of Zulu culture and folklore.

Madala's music has been researched and taught by musicologists as a course material in music studies. In May 2023 Madala was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree by the University of KwaZulu- Natal for his contribution to the development of indigenous music and his contribution to the music of Africa and that of the world. Madala Kunene was born in 1951 in Cato Manor, a vibrant mixed community in the harbor city of Durban, South Africa.

The son of a carpenter, Kunene was raised by his grandmother - a staunch academic who wanted him to be something of a bookworm. He started busking on Durban's beachfront at the age of 7 making his first guitar out of a cooking oil tin and fish gut for the strings. It was friends such as the late guitarist Sandile Shange who encouraged him to take guitar playing much more seriously. At the age of eight, in the year 1959, Kunene and some members of his extended family were trucked off by the Apartheid government to go live in the then relatively new township of KwaMashu. In very little time he had become the hottest guitar player and was discovered by the late Sakhile leader and bassist Sipho Gumede. Madala started to share the stage with such luminaries as Doc Mthalane, Mankunku Ngozi and Busi Mhlongo.

Madala Kunene's debut album was produced in 1990 by Sipho Gumede for David Marks label 3rd Ear Music and released on Vinyl and Cassettes. 30 years later the album was re-released digitally and now you are holding the first Vinyl re-release in your hands.

Lee Hazlewood

The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes, & Backsides (1968-71) - Repress

With his handlebar mustache and booming baritone, Lee Hazlewood was one of the defining stars of the late ‘60s. Though he’s perhaps best known for his work with Nancy Sinatra (including writing mega-hit “These Boots Are Made For Walking”), Hazlewood did stunning work away from that particular glamour queen and found latter-day champions in Beck, Sonic Youth, and Jarvis Cocker. Now, for Record Store Day 2012, we are kicking off our excavation of the Lee Hazlewood archives with this anthology, Singles, Nudes & Backsides, collecting the best of Lee’s solo songs and duets from his LHI (Lee Hazlewood Industries) imprint.

As a true legend of the great American songbook and a rebellious pioneer who left behind a lengthy trail of echo-laden pop masterpieces, Lee’s influence continues to reverberate today. Between 1968-71, Hazlewood not only released his finest solo work but produced numerous artists on LHI. From acid-folk and country-rock to pop-psych and soul, LHI issued dozens of long-forgotten 45s and LPs. This series will include material from LHI (re-mastered for the first time from the original analog tapes), along with Lee’s output for other labels, rarities, and unreleased gems.

See the sleeve: surrounded by nude girls, each wearing a fake mustache, Hazlewood wears a suit, ever-so-slightly awkwardly playing the role of the ‘60s playboy. Just like the picture, the songs present a man conflicted; he’s the tender-hearted romantic, the broken-hearted loser and the rugged cowboy, all in one. It’s there in the western swing of “Califia (Stone Rider)”, the loneliness of ”The Bed” and the bleak beauty of ”If It’s Monday Morning.” Hazlewood’s tremulous voice was made for duets (indeed, he wrote ”Some Velvet Morning”, one of the greatest of all time); here, Suzi Jane Hokom, Ann-Margret and Nina Lizell play counterpart to his manly tones.

In the wonderful liner notes, written by British journalist Wyndham Wallace, the writer describes his friend Hazlewood as “a curmudgeonly, unpredictable sort at the best of times, as impatient with his own talent as he is with other people.” The Hazlewood Wallace knew was puzzled by the growing interest in him in the last two decades of his life, which was ended by cancer at age 78. That late flurry of interest saw him perform at the Royal Festival Hall in 1999, his first-ever solo performance in the UK.

A natural wanderer, Lee lived a big life, fighting in the Korean War, working as a radio DJ in Phoenix, Arizona, setting up Viv Records in the ‘50s, working as a big-shot LA producer in the ‘60s, signing Phil Spector to his Trey Records label and prematurely announcing retirement in the wake of the mid-‘60s British invasion. He didn’t: Nancy Sinatra came along, the hits started flowing and he continued producing characterful solo albums into the ‘70s, which saw his move to Sweden. By 2007, Hazlewood was living in Vegas, and begrudgingly enjoying that flurry of latter-day interest in his work. This landmark compilation promises to create many more converts.

Tom Waits

Franks Wild Years - 2023 Reissue

Originally released in 1987 on Island Records, Franks Wild Years is Tom Waits’ 10th studio album. Titled for a play of the same name and authored by Waits and his wife, Kathleen Brennan, Franks Wild Years was performed by Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 1986. Franks Wild Years is an iteration of the track “Frank’s Wild Years” from Waits’ 1983 album Swordfishtrombones. The album divides the story neatly into two acts and although titled “un operachi romantic”, there is no opera in Franks. There is a hilarious touch of operatic styling by Waits himself in the song “Temptation.” His vocal character varies wildly throughout the work’s 17 songs, and is no more impressive than when the gruff, growly singer turns to impeccable Sinatra-esque phrasing on the Vegas number, “Straight To The Top.” While Franks featured a 14-member cast on stage, the album is all-Waits—yet suggests a multitude of characters by virtue of his chameleon vocals. The album is a startling group of lost dreams, bad dreams, dreams that might not even be dreams. The music is nightmarish, ethereal, beautiful. Think broken calliopes played by genius children, horns played at dawn in a graveyard, banjos leaking through practice room walls. Titles evoke Frank’s dime-store Odyssey: “Straight To The Top,” “Blow Wind Blow,” “Temptation,” “I’ll Be Gone.” NME ranked the work the number five album of 1987.

Newly remastered for the first time ever from the original ½” flat master tape and personally overseen by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan. Mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering under the guidance of Waits’ longtime audio engineer, Karl Derfler. The album packaging has also been restored. Franks Wild Years includes tracks such as “Cold Cold Ground,” “Way Down In The Hole” – versions of which were used as the theme music of HBO’s series The Wire – and “Temptation.”

Yebo! Rare Mzansi Party Beats From Apartheid's Dying Years Compiled By John Armstrong

The apartheid boycott In the 80s, the world – rightly - stepped up its boycott against South Africa’s apartheid government. But this had unexpected and sometimes adverse consequences for South Africa’s music professionals and consumers. Musicians still needed to work live shows both at home and abroad, and to make and sell records. The youth still aspired to clubbing and partying at the weekend after hard, poorly paid jobs under the thumb of an oppressive government. Music was their sanctuary: specifically, African- American inspired soul, jazz, boogie, disco and funk.

Unique diversity producing musical excellence was nothing new for South Africa, even in the 80s: both traditional and jazz music of various genres had been performed, showcased and recorded for decades with the assistance of some of the most skilled and ingenious sound-engineers and producers in the world, the jazz players rivalling their American peers in many cases. But what makes Mzansi 80s popular music unique is that it had to – and for the most part, did- appeal to a multi-ethnic, multilingual population almost like no other in the world, for its geographical size. There may have been many tribal and political differences between Zulu, Sotho, Xhosa, Tsonga and others day-to-day, but when it came to the weekend, those differences often melted away for a while on the dancefloor. Paul Ndlovu had kwaZulu fans as well as Shangaan followers; Black Moses and the Soul Brothers had followers and fans with everyone..and so on. And everyone- detractors and lovers alike- were content to settle on the monicker ‘Bubblegum’ as a general description. Mzansi took disco- and slowed it down a bit.. ..exactly as 90s and early 2000s South African DJs and mixers took House- and slowed it down a bit to develop Kwaito, Gqom and – later – Amapiano. The Roland TR-707 sampler came along in 1985- at just the right time for the flowering of Mzansi disco and boogie. And in the artful hands of arrangers, engineers and producers such as Peter “Hitman’ Moticoe, whose work figures on several of the tracks here, it became something unique to South Africa.

Barbara Charone

Access All Areas : A Backstage Pass Through 50 Years Of Music And Culture

First as a journalist and then a publicist at Warner Brothers Records for nearly twenty years, Barbara Charone has experienced, first-hand, the changes in the cultural landscape. Access All Areas is a personal, insightful and humorous memoir packed with stories of being on the cultural frontline, from first writing press releases on a typewriter driven by Tip Ex, then as a press officer for heavy metal bands taking the bus up to Donnington Festival with coffee, croissants and the much more popular sulfate. To taking on Madonna, an unknown girl from Detroit, and telling Smash Hits 'you don't have to run the piece if the single doesn't chart', and becoming a true pioneer in music, Charone continues to work with the biggest names in music, including Depeche Mode, Robert Plant, Foo Fighters and Mark Ronson at her agency MBCPR.

The story of how a music-loving, budding journalist from a Chicago suburb became the defining music publicist of her generation, Access All Areas is a time capsule of the last fifty years, told through the lens of music.

Nina Simone

The Montreux Years

Nina Simone’s story from the late sixties to the nineties can be told through her legendary performances in Montreux. Taking to the Montreux stage for the first time on 16 June 1968 for the festival’s second edition, Simone built a lasting relationship with Montreux Jazz Festival and its Creator and Founder Claude Nobs, which uniqueness, trust and electricity can be clearly felt on the recordings. Simone’s multi-faceted and radical story is laid bare on ‘Nina Simone: The Montreux Years’. From Nina’s glorious and emotional 1968 performance to her fiery and unpredictable concert in 1976, one of the festival’s most remarkable performances ever witnessed, the collection includes recordings from all of her five legendary Montreux concerts – 1968, 1976, 1981, 1987 and 1990.

Featuring rare and previously unreleased material from Claude Nobs’ private collection, Nina Simone devotees worldwide will be thrilled by the inclusion of the powerful I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free, poignant and fearless Four Women and Simone’s hauntingly beautiful performance of Ne Me Quitte Pas. A spine-tingling version of Janis Ian’s searing and potent Stars, which Simone covered for the very first time during her 1976 Montreux performance, sits alongside her bold and electrifying re-imagine of Bob Marley’s ballad No Women No Cry in 1990. The collection closes with the encore of Nina Simone’s final Montreux Jazz Festival concert and one of Simone’s most-loved and best-known recordings, the exuberant My Baby Just Cares For Me, showcasing the deep and multidimensional facets of Simone’s life and music.

Matt Berry

Gather Up (Ten Years On Acid Jazz)

Following the huge acclaim earlier this year for Matt Berry’s eighth studio album The Blue Elephant, Acid Jazz Records release Gather Up, a compilation album encompassing the singular musical adventures this extraordinary musician has taken over the past decade, offering a revelatory and fascinating insight into the working process of a genuine musical maverick and sonic explorer.

Over 10 years with Acid Jazz Records Berry has released nine incredibly diverse albums (including one live album). From the tangled-folk rock thickets of Witchazel and Kill The Wolf (which features the song from which this box gets its name), to the out-there explorations of Music For Insomniacs or TV Themes’ retro-kitsch delights, through the soul power in Matt Berry & The Maypoles Live or the twilight grooves of The Small Hours to the classic pedal-steel songwriting of Phantom Birds and the smorgasbord of psychedelic sounds on The Blue Elephant, Berry’s journey has produced a feast for the ears that twists and turns down more unexpected avenues than most artists could manage over several careers.

Gather Up pulls together an excellent 21-track career spanning collection expertly compiled by Berry, available as a separate, standalone release on 2LP or single CD, including non-album tracks such as ‘Snuff Box Theme’. No easy achievement considering the sheer breadth, diversity and volume of his exceptional musical output.

Bills & Aches & Blues (40 Years Of 4AD)

In 2020, 4AD turned 40. Never one to be on time for a party, the label is commemorating that landmark this year with the release of Bills & Aches & Blues.

The compilation features 18 of its current artists covering a song of their choosing from 4AD’s past: a creative experiment rooted in the spirit of collaboration and a snapshot of 4AD, 41 years after its inception.

Bills & Aches & Blues will be released on double LP and double CD on 23rd July. The first 12 months’ profits from Bills & Aches & Blues will be donated to The Harmony Project, a Los Angeles-based after-school programme for children from communities and schools that lack equitable access to studying the arts or music.

Bills & Aches & Blues’ 18 recordings contain fascinating connections between artist and track. The earliest song chosen (by U.S. Girls) is The Birthday Party’s ‘Junkyard’, from 1981; the most recent are the two Grimes covers (‘Genesis’ and ‘Oblivion’, respectively by Spencer. and Dry Cleaning) from 2012. Suitably, for the one band that bridges 4AD past and present, The Breeders are all over Bills And Aches And Blues. They’re covered three times – ‘Cannonball’ by Tune-Yards, ‘Mountain Battles’ by Bradford Cox of Deerhunter and ‘Off You’ by Big Thief, whilst The Breeders cover ‘The Dirt Eaters’ by their ‘90s contemporaries His Name Is Alive.

Landmark songs such as ‘Cannonball’, ‘Song To The Siren’ and Pixies’ ‘Where is My Mind?’, will feel comfortable to casual fans, however by contrast, much joy can be found in the album’s surprise choices, such as Air Miami’s ‘Seabird’ and the Lush B-side ‘Sunbathing’, covered respectively by new signings Maria Somerville and Jenny Hval.

Bills & Aches & Blues is named, arguably (as Elizabeth Fraser never published the lyrics) after the opening line of Cocteau Twins ‘Cherry-Coloured Funk’. Perhaps too unique and uncoverable in their own right, their legendary take on Tim Buckley’s ‘Song To The Siren’, under the name This Mortal Coil (along with Buckley’s pre-Starsailor acoustic version) informs SOHN’s cover.

Some tracks unearth hitherto hidden shared DNA, such as Future Islands’ and Colourbox’s ‘The Moon Is Blue’; other tracks are more akin to reinvention. Aldous Harding distils the melodic essence of Deerhunter’s ‘Revival’ and recasts it in her own uncanny image. U.S. Girls’ future-disco ‘Junkyard’ and Bing & Ruth’s neo-classical instrumental ‘Gigantic’ are even more radical interpretations. Leading off the album, Tkay Maidza brings both her Art Rap and R&B game, but also an unexpected ‘80s synth pop template, to Pixies’ ‘Where Is My Mind?’, a perfect title for these chaotic times.

Grauzone

Grauzone - 40 Years Anniversary Edition

WRWTFWW Records reissues Swiss cult band Grauzone’s self-titled album in an expanded 40 Years Anniversary Edition packed with the original 1981 album plus 9 extra songs, as well as extensive liner notes by Swiss music historian Lurker Grand. The 19-track album is available as a double LP vinyl in heavy 350gsm sleeve and a digipack CD, both sourced from the original reels and put together under the supervision of band member and all around legend Stephan Eicher.

The pioneering band from Bern (Switzerland) had a short-lived but highly-regarded career which birthed a cult discography that still fascinates and resonates today. Consisting of core members Martin Eicher, Stephan Eicher, and Marco Repetto, and on-and-off participants Christian GT Trüssel, Claudine Chirac, and Ingrid Berney, the elusive group broke new grounds in the early 80s, experimenting with punk and industrial music, early techno sounds, minimalism, new wave, pop, and various electronics. With an innovative and polished approach to design, visuals, performance, and all around style and philosophy on top of their superb music, the constantly transforming unit developed a whole experience - the Grauzone experience: wild and unpredictable, yet sophisticated and cohesive, or as Swiss music historian Lurker Grand would call it, "an Art band with a Punk attitude".

Completely rejecting the music industry rules and refusing to play the game of promotion, touring, release schedules, and TV appearances even though they had a multi-platinum international hit with the song "Eisbär", the band quickly disintegrated in full convention-defying glory, leaving behind an inspiring music legacy for the world to discover and discover again, one generation after the other.

This extended version of their debut (and only) album beautifully crystallizes the Grauzone miracle/accident - where pop and youthful experimentation meet at (new/cold/no) wave and industrial crossroads, and where classic hits ("Eisbär", "FILM 2", "Raum", "Träume Mit Mir", "Der Weg Zu Zweit"…) flawlessly mesh with unconventional deep cuts ("In Der Nacht", "Film 1", "Maikäfer Flieg"…). Very simply put: GOOD timeless music with an edge.

Stephan Eicher went on to be, arguably, the most successful Swiss musician ever, with an international career extending from pop chanson to experimental escapades and collaborations with Moondog, artists Sophie Calle and Sylvie Fleury, and author Martin Suter among many other luminaries. Marco Repetto flourished as a techno and ambient producer, releasing multiple projects including releases on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label.

Deafheaven

10 Years Gone

It was recorded during COVID, so no live audience. For the past ten years, San Francisco rock / post-metal luminaries Deafheaven have built one of the most compelling discographies in metal, one that has challenged both the modus operandi and perceptions of the genre. Each critically acclaimed release widened the scope of their particular views of what rock and metal can be, capped by their most innovative album to date in 2018's Ordinary Corrupt Human Love. It all began though, with the 2010, four-song Demo released to Bandcamp by the bands founding members George Clarke and Kerry McCoy. Set to embark on a world tour earlier this year to celebrate their 10th anniversary as a band and the five albums released in that span, Deafheaven had to switch gears when COVID canceled all gatherings across the world, instead teaming with longtime producer Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden studios to bring the show they planned to perform in a studio sessions format. 10 Years Gone includes the first song they ever wrote in "Daedalus" from the first album Demo, which also serves as the first single released from this album, along with fan favorites like “Dream House” and “Vertigo” that have an added power in this setting. Deafheaven named ‘Artist of the Decade’ by Vice, along with albums featured in ‘Best of 2010s’ lists on Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Metacritic, AV Club and many more.

“Fourteen Years” is the first of three 10”s comprising Charlotte Courbe’s third album. It marks her return to Honest Jon’s after two decades. Recently, Charlotte joined Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, singing and playing scissors. Her recording “Born To Lie” featured prominently in the TV series Killing Eve. Spotify has just voted her track “Rusty” amongst the best of the last decade. After a cancer diagnosis last year, Charlotte felt the urge to produce and release new music. ‘It became like a vital thing.’ “MRI Song” and “Planet Ping Pong” were recorded during chemotherapy. “Mind Contorted” is a duet with Terry Hall, also featuring Terry’s son Theodore, and Noel Gallagher on guitars, in a cover of Daniel Johnston. The song “Fourteen Years” is the oldest inclusion. Meant for LVC’s second album “I Wish Dee Dee Ramone Was Here With Me” it announces a fresh, freer direction. The sleeve exclusively presents new work by the celebrated English artist John Stezaker, in the first of a triptych. This EP is laced with surprise and subversiveness. Its refreshing candour sets it apart. It’s a unique, compelling listen.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Sometimes it's just the first chord of a tune you need to hear to have all the endorphins come flooding back and for me, Ash's 'Girl On Mars' is about as close as you can get to a time capsule. Add that to 'Oh Yeah' and 'Goldfinger', and you have an absolutely essential collection for fans and a great best of for those uninitiated.

Goosebumps – 25 Years Of Marina Records

Congratulations! Yippie-Aye-Yay-Yay! Bang! Marina Records celebrates its 25th anniversary with the release of Goosebumps, a deluxe compilation featuring 40 stunning tracks on two groovy compact discs and 3LP.

Goosebumps, living up to its title, includes many unreleased cuts and exclusive contributions, as well as selected nuggets from the label catalogue. Includes tracks from SHACK, JAMES KIRK, THE PALE FOUNTAINS, MALCOLM ROSS, PAUL HAIG, THE PALE FISHERS, ALEX CHILTON and many more..

The splendid booklet features more than 100 photographs from the Marina archive. The strictly limited 3-LP edition comes with beautifully designed innersleeves and individually coloured wax. Orange - Yellow – Red.

Marina Records, founded by Stefan Kassel and Frank Lähnemann in Hamburg 25 years ago, is not only known for its distinctive sleeve design which has been praised in several cover art books, but also for its eclectic, unique artist roster and its devotion to classic pop songwriting. Their fabulous The In-Kraut compilation series even turned out to define a genre of its own.

Kickstarting with Brent Cash’s pop smash Digging The Fault Line, Goosebumps features artists as diverse as exceptional Glasgow funk sextet Gazelle and Chris Thomson’s beloved chamber pop outfit The Bathers from the early days of the label - to the lushly orchestrated Morricone-like soundscapes of Starless and jazz trumpeter Colin Steele, two recent signings. Steele gave the wonderful songs of The Pearlfishers the royal jazz treatment with exciting new arrangements. The Pearlfishers themselves recorded seven albums for Marina so far. Their songwriting has been compared to Paul McCartney, Jimmy Webb and Brian Wilson. They contribute the previously unreleased The Time Is Right. They also recorded a fantastic cover version of The Pale Fountains’ Southbound Excursion - under the nom de plume The Pale Fishers. Another exclusive on this compilation.

The Pale Fountains themselves are featured with The Norfolk Broads – a track from their Marina anthology Longshot For Your Love. Pale Fountains songwriter Michael Head makes a second appearance with Dragonfly from the Shack album Waterpistol. Released by Marina in 1995 - and rated by many critics as one of the best British albums of the 90s. In 2001 Marina effectively initiated the reformation of sunshine pop legends The Free Design. McCarran Airport hails from their comeback album Cosmic Peekaboo. Only With You by Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub and I Wanna Pick You Up by Alex Chilton originate from Marina’s bestselling album Caroline Now! The Songs Of Brian Wilson & The Beach Boys (“Album of the month” in UNCUT).

Eccentric Orange Juice founding member James Kirk recorded his pop-tastic solo album You Can Make It If You Boogie for Marina in 2003. He joins Scottish super-group Port Sulphur on the groovy Orient Express. Felicity, one of his classic Orange Juice songs, is featured in a special, as yet unreleased “Party Mix“. Boogie! Two other Scottish music legends - both of Josef K fame - are featured on Goosebumps: Malcolm Ross and Paul Haig.

Goosebumps - 25 years of pure pop heaven.

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers

Years

When Sidelong, Sarah Shook & the Disarmers' debut album, was released in early 2017, it quickly earned kudos for its blast of fresh, fierce honesty and sly wit. It was a welcome new voice in a genre too often mired in the staid and conventional. Years solidifies the point: Sarah Shook & the Disarmers have moved from getting people's attention to commanding it. Inspired by artists such as the Sex Pistols, Elliott Smith and Hank Williams, Sarah sings with confidence, control, and a hint of menace. The Disarmers match her on every track.

Pere Ubu

20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo

Fronted as ever by David Thomas, Pere Ubu unveil their new album, 20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo, which opens the doors of the avant-garage to reveal the hardworking mechanics hammering away at the fundamentals of blue-collar rock.

A three-guitar revision sees Keith Moliné, Gary Siperko and Kristof Hahn (The Swans) expand the established orchestra of analog and digital synths (Wheeler, Gagarin), clarinet (Boon), drums (Mehlman) and Thomas’ unique vocals.
20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo follows their 2015 release Carnival of Souls, which was widely praised by the media and used by cult series 'American Horror Story' in Season 4.

David Thomas: “The new album is The James Gang teaming up with Tangerine Dream. The Chinese Whispers methodology we worked on the last two albums has been replaced by the Dark Room. Put musicians in a lightless room and by feeling one small section of an unknown object have them figure what it must be.”

The album was recorded and mixed at Suma, Painesville Ohio. Engineer Paul Hamann, and his father before him, have been part of almost every Pere Ubu album since 1976.

Cymbals Eat Guitars

Pretty Years

Pretty Years, the wildly ambitious fourth LP for Cymbals Eat Guitars, is easily the band’s most sonically enigmatic and most rewarding album yet. Their trademark cacophonic guitar rock and innate propulsion are still abundant, but they’re buttressed by raucous synth and keyboard lines, and an extemporaneous saxophone performance, which enrich when they could easily clutter these songs. The band also worked more quickly and efficiently than they had in the past, facilitated by years on the road in which they’ve played close to a thousand shows, which rendered them a tight, fully-oiled machine in the studio. Opener “Finally” shimmers with complex beauty, leading into the sweet rush of “Have a Heart,” which finds lead singer and guitarist Joseph D’Agostino singing, “I’m so out of sync / And you’re out of sync with me,” which could well be a mantra for the visceral appeal of this superb record. The entire album is rife with electrified, flashbulb moments—“4th of July, Philadelphia (SANDY)” conveys the madness of life on the road, exhibiting D’Agostino’s uncanny ability to transform minutiae into profundity. This skill is evident in spades on the record’s centerpiece and opus, the disarmingly vulnerable “Dancing Days.” The song also exhibits the contributions of Whipple, and slyly invokes the album’s title in its magisterial chorus, as D’Agostino contritely croons, “Goodbye to my pretty years.” And indeed, Pretty Years is a roller coaster ride, both lyrically and sonically, that encompasses what it’s like to be alive and in the moment. But ultimately, this is an album that keenly captures the magic and loss attendant to living life wide-eyed, and hints that these “pretty years” may portend even prettier ones to come. “On the lead single from this year’s Pretty Years, these young Americans have gone full ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze Out,’ embracing ’70s rock in all its brassy pomp and soulful stomp. When these guys said they wanted to make a more energetic album, they must have meant one you could dance to.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Think hazy summer montage : diving off a rope swing into one of the great lakes, people laughing at outdoor parties, throwing frisbees or spraying their mates with a hose whilst washing their car. This is effervescent and upbeat indie-rock, filmic and feel-good. Jangly guitars and open-closed-open snare hits, topped with demi-punk vocals (slightly snarling, filled with youthful growl and vim). Things take a punkier turn on songs like 'Beam', where 'Close' is a slightly more meditative minor-key affair. Closer 'Shrine' is a natural culmination on this increasing emotive arc, encompassing elements of all of the previous tonal shifts, whilst retaining the sound that really makes them "them". A fulfilling and thrilling ride, and one i'd be happy to take again.

Brendan Canning is the co-founder of the Toronto supergroup Broken Social Scene that includes members of Metric, Do Make Say Think, Stars and the Grammy-nominated Feist. One of the most enduring and influential alternative bands of the 00s, Broken Social Scene’s ‘You Forgot It In People’ defined the ‘indie rock’ era and paved the way for Canadian acts like Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade. Canning’s third solo album, ‘The Home Wrecking Years’, is his first release with a full band since Broken Social Scene’s 2010 release ‘Forgiveness Rock Record’. The album is released on Arts & Crafts and marks Canning’s first solo album release since 2013’s ‘You Gots 2 Chill’. While that record had been crafted solo in his living room, ‘Home Wrecking Years’ features a few other musicians helping fill out the sound. This includes fellow Broken Social Scene members Sam Goldberg and Justin Peroff, as well as former Stills keyboardist Liam O’Neil.

“These were carefree times. We were young enough to put our bodies to the test every night on the seven-by-seven-mile patch of the Bay. The endless wars seemed less at home. Songs were hanging off the branches heavy, plump and threatening to rot on the vine if they weren’t polished and put to tape.

The band was on their third live drummer but the lineup in The Fresh & Onlys’ recording tower was a consistent group of pop soldiers writing, working and whiling away the hours. A beeramid of cheap cans, endless dope smokery and a pretty strong vibe of dudes who would play together into oblivion. 388 rolling, tape spilling over itself, drum kit covered in mufflers, a chest of shitty percussion toys, lots of ideas and multiple secret weapons at their disposal.

“Shayde Sartin: the beast from out east, the thud of a heavy slow bomb… the best bass player in the Bay. Unaccredited infinite times on records that were made better by his finely crafted skills. I can pick him out on records instantly.

“Wymond ‘The Count’: you can almost smell his hair on his hooks. If there was a stage monitor in your living room his fence-climber boot would be on it. Wymond always has the riff that made the jets of the song take off. Listen and you’ll see what I mean.

“Tim Cohen: the man behind the beard. Some would say the leader. In the game as long as Bette Midler. Cohen writes great songs in his sleep, I think. Once referred to by a buddy as ‘like three weirdos in one.’

“Think of these as basement tapes, a companion to the first Fresh & Onlys Castle Face release (which itself deserves another listen). I remember watching some of these tunes get banged out live in a sweat pit in Oakland. The sound guy so gacked out that there was no sound guy, basically.” - John Dwyer, February 16th, 2015.

'For Years', the debut album from Airhead aka Rob McAndrews marks the four year transition from student producer to international touring musician, playing to vast audiences across the world as guitarist for his childhood friend James Blake, writing and jamming in the studio with James and Brian Eno, and DJing on the finest club soundsystems modern technology has to offer.

It spans from tracks like 'Azure Race', 'Milkola Bottle' and 'Knives' (featuring James) - the kind of intensely introspective and sometimes “forlorn and sad” atmospheres you'd expect from a young man fiercely dedicated to his craft above all else - through to more recent tracks like 'Callow' and the sun-dappled 'Fault Line' with their gentle female vocals and playful rhythms.

Enter into 'For Years' and it's like a strange and beautiful building that you'll want to explore differently each time. Even after many listens you'll find spaces opening up you'd never come across before, sometimes with the finest detail revealing something new that will leave you breathless and speechless... in a good way.

The label prizes itself on the motto of 'real music for real people' and this has been borne out by the fact that there are now over 160 compilations and artist albums released, a dazzling variety of sounds and styles from funk and soul to disco and Latin as well as house and hip hop and beyond. Compilers, producers and musicians from around the globe have been brought in to add their expertise to the mix and in turn the label has profited from an extremely rich amalgam of diverse artists and a plethora of musical genres.

Mixed by recent addition to the BBE roster Chris Read, ‘BBE15’ is a master class in bringing this music together in one seamless mix, your very own memory lane of BBE’s endless highs. From the 'Beat Generation' series which featured hip hop legends Pete Rock, Jay Dee, Marley Marl and DJ Jazzy Jeff to (now) household name Will.i.am to the eclecticism of DJ Spinna, King Britt, Madlib and for best measure MFSB string arranger Larry Gold to unreleased gems from jazz-funk pioneer Roy Ayers. Moreover Aaron Jerome who first cut his teeth with BBE with his debut album 'Time To Re-Arrange' released in 2006 - and has recently been outed as UK bass talent SBTRKT.

The Silent Years

The Globe

The Silent Years acclaimed new album "The Globe" gets its UK release in September 2009 through Gift Music. Recorded by the band, mixed with Chris Coady (of TV On The Radio, Blonde Redhead, Grizzly Bear and !!! fame) and picking at the darkened Americana heartstrings of fellow travellers like Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, The Shins and Arcade Fire, the Detroit based band have built upon their Spin Magazine 'Underground Artist Of The Year' accolade to deliver an album of harmony and wonder. Described as thoughtful, edgy, orchestral and luxuriant, these songs reach gloriously upward - simultaneously immediate and timeless: a 'panoramic scene... endlessly open arms and room enough to breathe big and deep' (Daytrotter). "The Globe" title is itself a metaphor at play, a symbol of scale in each direction, as the songs shift naturally from the microscopic to the universal.

The Capitol Years

You Can Stay There

Philadelphia's The Capitol Years return with this new single on new label SOE. "You Can Stay There" is wonderful sunkissed pop that has similar shimmering pop dynamics to The Shins: Melodic, intricate guitars, vocal harmonies, and dreamy vocals. Over on the flip, "1000 Guns" employs the same melodic guitar work, over a lolloping drum beat again topped with gorgeous dreamy vocals. Reminiscent of Piccadilly favourites Ambulance LTD. Lovely stuff!

Super Furry Animals

Dark Days / Light Years

The Welsh psychedelic pop legends return with "Dark Days/Light Years", their ninth studio album, a glorious technicolour journey into the mind of Super Furry Animals, jam packed into 59 minutes of acidic pop genius. Where previous albums have seen the band experiment with extra instrumentation, this release is full of songs based on grooves rather than ensemble composition. The band's impish sense of humour remains, though, with track titles such as "The Very Best Of Neil Diamond" and "Moped Eyes" standing out. Also notable is Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy's guest appearance on the Kraftwerk-inspired "Inaugural Trams", performing a German-language rap. In keeping with more recent albums, the band also share lead vocal duties between several members.

The Capitol Years

Revolutions

Not content with just one 'Revolution', Philadelphia's shape-shifting pop auteurs, The Capitol Years, implore you to embrace their new single (along with the worldwide change afoot) if only by spinning the new track over and over again! Leading up to the release of the full length, "Dance Away The Terror", "Revolutions" is just one instance of ethereal pop on an album that ranges from art noise freakouts to whimsical pop-craft, often in the course of the same song. The Capitol Years began as a bedroom pop experiment, morphed into a bombastic live band of Philadelphian song-obsessed noisemakers, and today continues as one of the city's most beloved groups.

Stax Dempsey

Monet Sky

First two songs from next year's LP produced in conjunction with Mo Wax producers Parsley Sound. Stax Dempsey's "Monet Sky" is full of simple, beatific melody and gently plucked guitar BJ Cole adds his unique pedal steel guitar sound to "Endless Summer", but what you really have here are two simple, classic songs that come from a tradition that stretches from Leadbelly to Lambchop, from an American outsider with a guitar and a headful of dreams, and not much else that matters..

Josh Rouse

The Best Of The Rykodisc Years

First-ever compilation from this acclaimed singer-songwriter, spanning seven years and featuring 32 songs on two CDs - favourites, rarities and unreleased gems. Nebraska-born Josh Rouse started out on Rykodisc where he released five albums and two EPs of literate and engaging guitar pop, which garnered him both critical raves and a devoted following. Now, a decade after his debut, "The Best Of The Rykodisc Years" collects together highlights from those Rykodisc albums as well as treasures from Josh's own personal vaults, including seven previously unreleased tracks, to produce over two hours of sublime music spanning 1998-2005. "The Best Of The Rykodisc Years" distils the essence of what Rouse calls his 'first stage'. Years and musical styles may separate these songs, but ultimately they are linked through the warmth of Rouse's voice, the conversational ease of his singing and his unfailing melodic gift. From the folk-rock of "Late Night Conversation" to the knowing country of "It's The Nighttime", from the smart pop of "Feeling No Pain" to the rhythmically sly white-boy soul of "Comeback (Light Therapy)" - each bears Rouse's unmistakable musical fingerprint.

The Sleeping Years

We're Becoming Islands One By One

The Sleeping Years is the new project from Dale Grundle, formerly of the Catchers. Now signed to innovative indie-label Rocket Girl, the debut album "We're becoming Islands One By One", is a gorgeous exploration of melody and melancholy. A gifted lyricist, Dale's exquisitely crafted songs tell of people trying to stay connected in a world seemingly designed to keep them apart. He is heavily influenced by the language and culture of his home in Ireland, providing a distinct character to this highly personal collection of songs.
