USA underground legend Strategy (Peak Oil, Idle Hands, Further, 100% Silk) returns with his 20th album that repurposes the chill-out subgenre to withstand the heat of armageddon.

On "The Wet Room", Cascadian experimental music fixture Strategy set out repurpose chill-out for improved resilience under the strains of record-breaking heatwaves. Syrupy bass workouts, generative freeform bubblers, captured freak transmissions, uneasy soundbites, buried secret messages, dubbed-out mixing board sessions coalesce into a purposeful, yet liquid, choreography.

Fans of the West Mineral / Huerco / 3XL universe and some of the recent trip-hop inspired releases from last year should defo check!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Under the radar downbeat / dub engineer Strategy returns with another unfathomably deep exercise in echo chamber science and precision bass workouts. If you liked his "Dub Mind Paradigm", you're gonna love this.

E. Live

Wet Summer / Night Raid

E. Live is back again at Star Creature HQ with another boogie blast off of the jazz-funk variety. The Bay Area boogie king leans in on the jazzier side of disco while still maintaining the usual dancefloor vibes we know and love about the label. A perfect mix of accessible, crowd friendly sophisticated sounds - if you like Roy Ayers, Patrice Rushen, Khruangbin, FKJ, Toro Y Moi, this will be a welcome addition to record box. As usual, copies are limited.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: How Star Creature manage to be so prolific yet rarely release a duff track with such a modest number of musicians on their roster is really quite astonishing. E. Live drops one of his hottest double headers yet for his team.

TRACK LISTING

Is It Balearic make a big signing here as Dr Bronzer appears on the label with a first-ever release. It's a 12" awash with warm California sun as A-side tune 'Sandee Bottoms' hats back to a golden 90s Balearic era with its loose-limbed drums and warm synth smears. Coyote offers up a sleazy dub and 'Wet Dreams' then appears on the flip. It's a more intense and busy tune with cowbells, broken house beats, steamy vocals and muted acid next to strummed acoustic riffs. Max Essa then shows his skills on a fine remix and lastly, Projection go deep and smoochy on their remix.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Channel the original spirit of the white isle with a distinctly baggy and hedonistic set of swayers that'll have you dreaming of sandy shores and late balmy nights.

Wet Tuna

Party In The House

Continuing this super productive year for the Feral Child label, the label releases an absolute peach here. Four totally whacked out, deep cuts that defy any hopes of genre pigeonholing; a deliciously dazzling moulding of ambitious grooves and ideas from the wonderful WET TUNA.

Never short on dizzying ambition, we described it as a ‘Space Dub Psych Disco collision’ on an Instagram post and that kinda holds true a few days on here. Fabulously bonkers and groovy in equal measure, this one comes hugely recommended. WET TUNA feature Matt (MV) Valentine & Erika (EE) Elder alongside Jim Bliss, Woods’ Jeremy Earl and on this record, Myriam Gendron.

We’ve left it to Matt to offer up the introductory words: “Wet Tuna specializes in homegrown, dubwise psychedelia. Exploration is paramount. You have a third ear? Probably if you are that kind, that’s spectrasound. They never do it the same way twice. “Party in the House” features Myriam Gendron and has poetry penned by Benoit Chaput of L’oie de Cravan. Samara Lubelski rips some electric violin, Jeremy Earl from Woods/Woodsist rides some golden tones singing harmony. Wet Tuna also has minor outlying islands, handmade things. Imported records, cassettes, cds. Sonic archepalegos. There are also deep cuts on their Bandcamp. If you really DIG you will find big fun on the mv & ee cottage run private press label child of microtones which they’ve been operating since 1999. You like big DISCO(2000) graphies & dead space? wet channels & foggy notion “jam band” environments, genreless free folk? You are here”.

A fabulously expansive set of jams; totally out there, groovy and beautifully psychedelic.

Fresh off the back of a Number 1 album Wet Leg, are pleased to reveal a new remix of “Too Late Now” by the legendary Soulwax. The Belgian duo have crafted a certified banger for late-night dancefloors looping Rhian Teasdale’s original vocals through distorted synths and pounding bass cranking up the BPM as they go.

Limited 12” vinyl release featuring an exclusive instrumental mix on the b-side.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Following on in their series which has touched up, thus far, Fontaines DC and Sylvester; Soulwax apply their electronic, stadium-tickling magic to recent upshots Wet Leg. It's a clanging, shuddering lesson in rhythm and discord that'll go down a hoot at both your local indie disco and the mainroom of the superclub.

    Wet Satin

    Wet Satin

Californian duo Wet Satin (comprised of former Lumerians members Jason Miller and Marc Melzer) will release their self-titled debut album on August 12th via Fuzz Club. Taking a step away from the brain-frying space-rock/psych wig-outs harnessed in their 15 years playing together in Lumerians, Wet Satin deals in what the duo call "Kosmische Tropicale" – an expression of reverence and enthusiasm growing from a long-time shared obsession with lost Cosmic Disco, Cumbia, Afrofunk and Library Music records. “We wanted to make something fun. Not too serious, but not frivolous either. Something that paid respect to its influences by adding a square to the quilt rather than trying to make a replica."

Wet Satin is a new project that got underway when the pair disbanded Lumerians in 2020 and then proceeded to suddenly have a lot of unplanned downtime for some reason. Borne out of a desire to offer up a more uplifting and hedonistic respite from our reigning hellscape, Miller says of Wet Satin’s intentions: “We started writing this album during a pretty bleak and heavy time, which I guess sort of sounds like ‘we started writing this album on a Wednesday’ now, but that's sort of the point too. There's an endless buffet of suffering you have a lifetime pass to gorge yourself on whenever you want it, but there's also a lesser-known dance club attached where you can work off some of those doom calories. Music has the ability to alter your environment and take you somewhere else. We genuinely had a lot of fun writing and recording this. The process fell somewhere in between over-indulgence and necessary catharsis, but it achieved a kind of balance in the end. It's a travel brochure for a very specifically peculiar psychological terrain. We think you'll have fun there. Try the hot springs.”

Pink Room is Wet’s upcoming EP as part of Secretly Canadian’s Friends Of campaign, guided by the New York three-piece’s magnetic singersongwriter Kelly Zutrau. This follows Zutrau’s third LP, Letter Blue, which was Wet’s most collaborative release, with co-writing and co-production from Toro y Moi’s Chaz Bear, as well as Frank Ocean’s go-to keyboardist Buddy Ross. Notably, founding guitarist Marty Sulkow has rejoined the group, alongside their nimble producer Joe Valle. Altogether, they’ve helped to create Wet’s most naturalfeeling and playful songs to date.

Wet released their self-titled debut EP in 2014, for the taste-making pop label Neon Gold, before moving to Columbia Records for two understated, celebrated albums, Don’t You (2016) and Still Run (2018). “Wet has what it takes to make everyone care about an indie band,” Fader announced in a glowing magazine profile before the band went on to play Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and sell out Webster Hall. They’ve toured with The 1975, Florence + the Machine, and Toro y Moi, who also featured Wet on 2019’s Outer Peace.

“I’m always interested in multiple feelings at once,” Zutrau says. “Not just a happy song, but happy and sad and guilty — those can all be true.” This is as much a sonic statement as it is one about life: “We see these messages in music and media that are very black and white, but our lives don’t really live up to those expectations. Instead, we’re somewhere in the middle of all these states that are much easier to explain.”

      Wet Leg

      Wet Leg

Debut LP from college buddies Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers who’s rapid ascent has seen them go from playing a handful of gigs pre-lockdown, to being name checked by Iggy Pop and ranked No. 2 in the BBC’s Sound Of 2022.

Surely everyone has heard their debut single Chaise Longue by now? It catapulted this Isle Of Wight duo into our consciousness during lock down and was followed by a handful of smart, hook filled pop songs that have made this LP one of the most anticipated debuts of the year. And it doesn’t disappoint!

Their half sung half spoken vocals deliver witty, brazen takes on navigating the ups and downs of modern life. There’s a definite nod to the 90s their sound: Angelica’s dead pan vocals and meandering bass bring to mind Elastica while Being In Love recalls the bitter sweet, dreamy pop of Lush and there’s a smattering of The Breeders in their more up beat songs. Combining this love of 90s indie-pop with a playful, anything goes attitude, they’ve created one of the most exciting debuts of the year.

Wet Silk was a rare digression into house music by the legendary star-crossed duo of Lamar Thomas and Judy Taylor. For this sonic liaison, Thomas brought along his high school friend, disco impresario Patrick Adams to co-produce, and the resulting “Let Me Do You Baby” is a slow and seductive sunset soirée with champagne and caviare. The track is skillfully arranged with slippery 808 programming, serpentine guitar, and silky pads, all sliding around Thomas and Lamar’s playfully suggestive vocals. For the first 12” release of this hypnotic track, Mixed Signals have paired it with two other delicious Thom/Tay productions, the rare and dubby house mix of Shelly Pearse’s “If You Want My Love”, and the instrumental end-of-the-nighter “I’ll Be Waiting”.

        Jones

        Hoops - Inc. Wet Remix

37 Adventures are proud to present ‘Hoops’, the new single from Jones.

Raised in East London, at an early age Jones began to turn her most private diary entries into songs. Since then she’s been gradually letting others into the world she’s created; namely XL’s resident producer Rodaidh McDonald and multifaceted Ninja Tune artist Raffertie, plus alt-pop mastermind (and brother of Jai) A K Paul.

‘Hoops’ has been co-produced by rising talents XO and Josh Record. It’s a gutsy, introspective, innovative track about heartbreak wrapped up in an intrically layered production that references grime and electronica in its R&B / pop styling.

With one of the most anticipated debut albums of the year, the Jimmy Fallon-approved Brooklyn trio Wet bring their minimalist, beat driven R&B production to ‘Hoops’ on this intimate remix that strips the original back to a skittering ballad.

‘Hoops’ is pressed on a hand-stamped 12” vinyl and is backed with the original version of the Jones track.

        Wet Blankets

        Rise Of Wet Blankets

Wet Blankets are from Australia. Rise Of Wet Blankets is the first 12” from these Geelong whackers, packin’ 11 bangers into 18 minutes.

Wet Blankets don’t write long songs, don’t get played on JJJ (UK residents, read, XFM), don’t have a permanent guitarist on this LP, in fact, Wet Blankets don’t even have a front cover on this LP (hand stamped cardboard to protect the record!). Wet Blankets write songs about real world problems like homeless people, stealing from Coles (UK residents, read Tescos) and being late for school.

The band came together round August of 2013, when 14-year-old Zane Gardner started slammin’ chords and rippin’ solos on his brother’s guitar. By the years end, a two track 7” was recorded in the bedroom and released in February ’14 on Italian label Goodbye Boozy. A couple of months later, Rise Of Wet Blankets was born.

The record was recorded on the industrial side of West Geelong with top bloke Mark Doman on his reel-to-reel 8 track one Saturday last year, spitting out influences like the Reatards, Swell Maps, Ramones and Dead Kennedy’s to name a few. Guitarists Zak & Jake (of Hierophants fame) take turns shredding over the top of each track to give it some extra life, but what it really sounds like is a fifteen-year-old kid yellin’ his guts out about bogans stealing carrots, crummy school teachers and eating overcooked steak for breakfast.

Wet Play Tapecast #1 - Kickin' Pigeon's Galactic Bounce

Wet Play is a clubnight based here in Manchester. Loosely described as a 'utopic lifestyle upgrade where good friends meet', their hedonistic parties adopt an open-vibe policy and take adventurers through many sonic realms. They put on Maria Minnerva, Ital, Beautiful Swimmers, Seahawks and Chicago Damn before anyone had even heard of them. This is the first in a series of tapecasts produced by the team; DJ mixes from the crew that highlight some of the sounds of the party. Resident DJ and promotor, Kickin' Pigeon aka Matt Ward (the orange bespeckled house and techno buyer / advisor from this very shop!) debuts the series here. Purveying his 'interstella house' sound, "Kickin' Pigeon's Galactic Bounce" was recorded straight to tape, directly from vinyl records through a fat analogue mixer and is an intergalactic journey through house and techno featuring records from Todd Terry, Rob Hood, Instant House and new cosmic techno cuts happened upon through his time working here at Piccadilly Records. Obviously we're gonna be biased but we think this mix ROCKS. The tape sounds super hot too, but don't worry if you don't have a tape player cos this comes with a fully downloadable version too (supplied via a code on some bespoke, very artistic inlay). If you want a taste of one of the hottest parties in Manchester at the moment, plus an insight into what makes our man here in the shop tick; or if you simply crave a rough-as-a-bears-arse vinyl only house and techno mix with some heavy eq'ing and mixing (think someone who's grown up listening to Derrick May / Jeff Mills / Theo Parrish) then you need this in your life!

          Wet Hair

          Radiant Lines

Amazing new pair of single sides by this ever-evolving Iowa City kraut-pop duo-turned-trio comes in a stunning full-colour 22-page pro-printed art book of brand new works by WET HAIR main-men Shawn Reed and Ryan Garbes.

          Limited to 500 copies.

The Show Is The Rainbow is the one-man electrical storm of one Darren Keen from Lincoln, Nebraska. The Show Is The Rainbow is all about glitch beats, twangy guitars, super funk ass bass lines and one rather twisted perspective on the world. Nebraska is of course Saddle Creek territory and Darren is intrinsically entwined in the Saddle Creek world, also serving as bassist for Beep Beep and touring frequently this past year with pals The Faint. "Wet Fist" is the second full-length album from TSITR and the first for Retard Disco. Mixed by Joel Pererson (The Faint).

          Wet Paint

Hug It Out / Hug It Out (Matt Tong - Bloc Party Remix)

Wet Paint make music governed by a simple premise - whatever you do, make sure that it's LOUD! Their surging guitars, irreverent lyrics and deceptively simple melodies are all driven by the same slacker-passion that emanates from the likes of Pavement, Dinosaur Jr and Pixies. Melodrama, anger, thrill and unbridled emotion are all in store, with this tale of one-way romance that will sound familiar to most of us (excluding, of course, the under-16s and devout Christians). What you're sure to get is lots of delicious feedback and an energy in song-writing that will be familiar to those who've already listened to "Save The Whale" (released earlier this year on Trial & Error). On the B-side comes an amazing remix by friends and colleagues Bloc Party, for all bedroom ballerinas who wish to dance to "Hug it Out" in their underwear. Highly recommended!

            Save The Whale

Wet Paint make music governed by a simple premise - whatever you do, make sure that it's LOUD! Their surging guitars, irreverent lyrics and deceptively simple melodies are all driven by the same slacker-passion that spurts from the likes of Pavement, Dinosaur Jr and Pixies. Wet Paint are ready to rock your socks off! It all began when three fifths of the band Absentee decided to be more productive between 6:30 and 11pm on Monday evenings. Side-stepping their familiar roles, Babak took up the mic and found his scream, Laurie hung up his bass and picked up a squealing axe, whilst Melinda discarded her melodica for a pair of thunderous drum sticks. After a few evenings of noise-making it became clear that throbbing bass lines would complete this raucous sound. In stepped James, of the exceptional Economy Wolf, and the Wet Paint line-up was complete. "Save The Whale" is a rather wonderful slacker-indie anthem that's further augmented by a beautiful lo-fi rendition of the song by Lightspeed Champion on the B-side. Tremendous!!!!!

              Diesel Boy

Rode Hard And Put Away Wet

Fourth full length album from one of Honest Don's best bands:they really know what they're doing. The band have developed a sort of niche for themselves as pop culture watchdogs and they hit the target again with the song "Emo Boy".
