WAAJEED

Waajeed’s 2022 long player, "Memoirs of Hi-Tech Jazz", was an aural love letter to his hometown of Detroit; an amalgam of the city’s history, coalescing the personal, political and, of course, musical past.

From the Motown soul assembly line to J Dilla’s musically dense hip-hop to The Stooges’ proto-punk to the birth of techno, the music of the Motor City has spread across the globe inspiring countless artists who in turn went on to create their own forms and genres.

Emulating this movement and transmutation, the "Memoirs of Hi-Tech Jazz Remixes "12” sees artists from three continents repurpose elements from across the LP, transforming them into productions stamped with their own trademark styles whilst retaining the spirit of each original:

The UK’s Mark Broom loops sections of "Right Now" while speeding up the BPM for a classic UK-style techno remix. Ghana-born Yazzus takes on "The Ballad of Robert O’Bryant" adding a surprising number of twists and turns for a five-and-a-half-minute piece. Australians Jensen Interceptor and Assembler Code close the 12” out with their take on the album’s title and opening track neatly closing the loop, bringing us full circle to the start of the LP.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Techno heads got plenty of get excited about here as three producers get to grips with tracks off Waajeed's seminal LP. Hard to pick a favourite but the uplifting glow and tribal energy of that Yazzus remix certainly has me bum shuffling in my seat this afternoon.

Dames Brown continue to build upon their Defected success with this three-track vinyl package, featuring remixes from two highly respected house selectors. ‘Glory’, featuring Dirt Tech Reck label founder Waajeed, has been spotlighted by BBC Radio 6’s Craig Charles, capturing the effervescence of the Dames on his flagship show. It's a rollicking, foot stomping, high energy exercise in spiritual funk; with the Dames in full effect with call-response, gospel-tinged vocals.

Chicago pioneer Kelly G.’s ‘Dancing Dub Club Mix’ takes the track to the clubs, with a tasteful 4x4 workout which retains all that vocal and organ magic, but segues them nicely into a barn stomping house groove.

On the B-side Detroit techno father-daughter duo Floorplan take the track to the church of dance music with a gospel-techno hybrid that's synonymous with this highly acclaimed act. Another winner from the Dames!

Jazzanova

Creative Musicians (Originals & Waajeed & Henrik Schwarz Remixes)

12” release of The Lyman Woodard Organisation-penned 'Creative Musicians', reimagined by Jazzanova and featuring remixes by Waajeed and Henrik Schwarz. Originally released as a digital EP from the album 'Strata Records – The Sound of Detroit – Reimagined by Jazzanova', 'Creative Musicians' and its remixes now come to you on deep grooved vinyl. The vocalist for these sessions is Sean Haefeli, who originally hails from Indianapolis, and brings a relaxed urgency to his contributions, sounding like a young Gil Scott-Heron. Leveraging his 20 plus year friendship with legendary Detroit DJ/Producer extraordinaire, Waajeed, Amir enlists him for a special four-to-the-floor mix that not only keeps that organic vibe but also adds a unique contemporary Detroit flavour! Henrik Schwarz needs little introduction to fans of eclectic electronic sounds. For over thirty years, his amazing body of work has packed dancefloors worldwide. Henrik takes ‘Creative Musicians’ in a slightly different direction, retaining many of Jazzanova’s original elements while adding his signature sound to the mix, providing another dance floor scorcher! And just to give you proper context, we have included the cult-classic, much-loved original version of ‘Creative Musicians’ by the Lyman Woodard Organization. ‘Strata Records - The Sound of Detroit - Reimagined by Jazzanova’ is no ‘covers’ album, rather a brand-new celebration of the iconic imprint, as Jazzanova’s take on Lyman Woodard Organization’s musical manifesto ‘Creative Musicians’ makes clear from its Afrobeat-inspired horn arrangements, drum track, and syncopated tempo.
