WU-KI

An amazing collection of beats from an ultra mysterious producer...

Next to nothing is known about WU-KI except for a cult instagram account with a small following - but what a following; a who's who of tastemakers, beatmakers and Pro Wasters are already hooked in to the WU-KI sound, accompanied by whacked-out VHS-x-infinity video clips.

Top Pro Waster RUF DUG was one of the loyal followers and then, about a year ago, the fates aligned and against all odds both Ruffy and WU-KI ended up in the same Taco joint. The deal was done before the third bite and this lovely 12 is the first time that WU-KI's music has been available anywhere IRL.

Jams for ur car, ur dance floor, ur bedroom and ur ears.

WU-KI remains a mysterious entity but their music is now ready to GET OUT THERE. Expect MORE

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: New one from taste defining label Ruf Kutz who enlist a mysterious producer for a red-lit & moody collection of instrumentals that hum, fizz and splurt in all the right directions. Top stuff.

Learning To Swim On Empty

‘Learning To Swim On Empty’ is the new EP from South Londoner Wu-Lu, his first material since 2022 breakthrough debut album, ‘LOGGERHEAD’. Released digitally back in May 2024, the vinyl edition includes two previously unreleased tracks, ‘Last Night With You (Instrumental)’ and ‘Crow’s Nest (Instrumental)’. The EP finds the vocalist and musician diving deeper than ever before, surfacing with
some of his most heartfelt, intimate songs yet, and broadening his sonic palette in the process. The record plays like a series of diary entries, inspired by growing up in Brixton, death and grief, rebirth, and the sink-or-swim feeling that comes with being thrown in at the deep end.

    LYF011 - Archives 1998-2012

A Celebration of the glimpses of gold that characterised WU LYF’s short reign-Featuring New Essays, Original Art, Photography & Lyrics.

Whilst preparing the 10th Anniversary Re-issue of the Singular WU LYF LP- "Go Tell Fire to the Mountain" a long forgotten hard drive was unearthed that held a pristine archive of the golden years of the LYF's creative output.
On it we found many snapshots of early Live Performances, Scans of all the Collaged Art works and Paintings, numerous Beautiful Photos captured by Friends and Lovers.

For those directly involved browsing over it provoked some giddy nostalgia for a well spent youth - a glorification of what was and some starry eyed speculation as to what could have been…

The conversation then arose that it would be a real shame to leave the work of WU LYF entirely overlooked in cultural history, lost to the sands of time, left as mere digital ash decaying in discarded digital urns.

So why not share it all?

Featuring text by and interviews by our very own Liam with Joe, Tom, Ellery and Evans. Plus additional text by Warren (War God) Bramley, JD Beauvalet, Matt Wilkinson, Beatrice Miniconi, Mino Tristovskij & Sean Wood.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Liam says: In 2021, I had the privilege of being able to contribute to the LYF ARCHIVES 1998-2012 by interviewing members Ellery, Joe and Tom. Fast forward to July of this year, LYF ARCHIVES saw life. Documenting the short but spirited life of this seminal band, this is a must for anyone who followed the WU in any capacity during their brief existence.

      LOGGERHEAD

South Londoner Wu-Lu’s stunning new album contains post-genre war dubs that speak directly to these richly troubled times.

The twelve simmering tracks from the producer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist are made of depth-charged post-punk, thrashed-up skate-park screamo, and the gauzy hip hop that Knwxledge might make if he’d got lost round the back of The Windmill on Brixton Hill.

It’s laced with revvy, ethereal guitars that warp and loom like electric pylons, concrete walls of bass that power out of drill-influenced, triplet-laced drums and piano melodies that pull you through. It teleports between Factory Records in the darkest 1980s and classic albums from DJ Shadow or early ‘90s Slipknot. LOGGERHEAD pulls from the past and reshapes it for now.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Loggerhead is a gigantic, sprawling suite of fiery anthems and fragmented instrumental heft, its hip-hop influence is strong but lurches between dark instrumental weirdness and avant rock a-la Anticon Records, it's a wonderfully dynamic and wildly inventive behemoth.

        Wu-Tang Clan

Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) - Coloured Vinyl Reissue

The classic debut from the Shaolin gang circa 1993 is one of the most important rap albums of all time, wrestling the initiative back from the West Coast gangsta crews and G-funk sound and taking hip hop to rawer, dirtier place altogether. The RZA's mix of kung fu movie samples and twisted soul loops gives a unique backing to the en masse duelling of Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Genius, Masta Killa et al. "Bring Back Da Ruckus" sets their stall out and things continue at a neck-breaking pace through the graceful "Can It All Be So Simple", the complexity of "Da Mystery Of Chessboxin'", threatening "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing Ta F' Wit", the scarily prescient "CREAM", Meth's evil signature theme, all the way through to "Protect Ya Neck" and "Tearz". Sheer brilliance.

          Wu-Tang Clan

          Legends Of The Wu-Tang Clan

Legend of the Wu-Tang is a compilation album by the Wu-Tang Clan, released in 2004. It is notable for including the rare unedited version of "Protect Ya Neck", a remix of the song "Method Man" with alternate verses, as well as "Shaolin Worldwide", "Sucker M.C.'s" (a Run D.M.C. cover) and "Diesel", three tracks the Wu-Tang produced for soundtracks and compilations. The inside booklet can be unfolded to form a mini-poster of the group. Of course, it features Wu-Tang staples like "Shame On A Nigga", "It's Yourz", "Proect Ya Neck (The Jump Off)" and "Sucker M.C's". Wu-Tang's legacy continues to live on, often cited as one of the most influential hip-hop acts of all time. Pressed and presented beautifully, this is a wonderful chance to own clean copies of Wu-Tang's best joints, but also makes a perfect introduction to the newcomers who may be overwhelmed by their excessive catalogue. Cop a load of this and learn the code of the streets...

              WU LYF

Go Tell Fire To The Mountain

Having shunned the advances of the hottest record labels and media over the last year, WU LYF – one of the most talked about bands from the UK in the last decade - release their debut album ‘Go Tell Fire To The Mountain’ on their own label L Y F Recordings.

The album was recorded live in a disused church in Manchester and mastered in Glasgow by Paul Savage (Mogwai), the result of which is 10 tracks of huge uncompromising Heavy Pop.

This groundbreaking project is trail-blazing the collaboration between dubstep and hip-hop, with stomach-pounding, bass-thumping guttural beats, and gully, gritty and grimy lyrics that break into the next decade in the chapters of each respective genre’s history. With Scuba, Parson, Trillbass, Dakimh, DZ, Rogue Star, Stenchman, Datsik & many more producing not remixes, but complex reinterpollations that include a veritable goldmine of Wu-Tang verses from the vaults that feature Raekwon, Ghostface Killa, RZA, GZA, Method Man, U-God & Masta Killa, Wu affiliates Killah Priest, Bronze Nazareth, Prodigal Sunn, Solomon Childs, Son One & more, and guest spots from Busta Rhymes, MF Doom, Pimp C, Three 6 Mafia, Ras Kass, Vast Aire, Canibus, Lord Jamar & many more, this one of a kind compilation is at the forefront of an emerging cultural and musical blend that is taking place on the margins of the mainstream, but will be talked about for years to come….
