Il Bosco Presents: New Wave Bangers From The Italo Discotheque

This is a super limited double vinyl only press.

Twelve Il Bosco edits of new wave bangers tried and tested down in the Manctalo Disko at The White Hotel and beyond...

'No digital will be sold. Again as we said plenty of times before the reason we don't sell the digital tracks is out of respect for the original artists. We make no money on pressing vinyl.

It's expensive. time consuming and nobody fukin buys it anymore.
We do it because we love this shit and the chance to share our discoveries with ya'll.
We hope our compilations serve as an advert for the original artists.
You fall in love with a track, find out who it is and then go and discover more about them.

Shouts here to Hysteric (Mothball Records) for track 3 and Kelvin Andrews & Balearic Mike (Down To The Sea And Back) for putting me onto Car Crash Set leading me to discover track 1.'

15 Years Of Butter Sessions - Disc One

A new chapter in Butter Sessions' ongoing Japanese exchange sees Sapporo sound sculptor Kuniyukire-opening a 2015 tour collaboration with label heads Sleep D- a deep, spatial beatdown powered by dub pressure and percussive hypnosis. Shadow-lurking prodigy Mosam Howiesondrops in with his trademark scatterbrain techno, while Hasvat Informantlocks into joint-consciousness big-room radioactivity.

Opening the B-side, Fader Capfuses Balearic psy-ence with Mike Dunn-esque utilitarian jack, hovering somewhere between '80s memory and future vision. Tokyo's Mayurashkafollows with Survival Guide, big beat colliding with drug chug, before Albrecht La'Brooyreunite for a divine chill-out tent slowdown, magnifying sample detail with exacting flow. We're adrift until Sunju Hargunlights the beacon with スカイサーファ(Sky Surfer), Thailand's emissary of ritualistic minimal trance.

Whether taken alone or folded into the three-disc triptych, each instalment stands as a bag-ready constant, charged with Butter Sessions' curatorial finesse.

Disc Two lifts off with recurring contributor Rory McPike's first label outing as Rings Around Saturn, a blissed-out cosmic floater skimming the periphery. Booked in the early days of the label's formative Mania residency, Japanese don Gonno twists freestyle, techno and breaks into pure ecstasy, before the unerringly bold Jennifer Loveless spikes the punch with a hallucinatory mix of drums, disembodied voice and jazz club keys.

On the flip, Boorloo's Guy Contact rolls out Dance In The Grey, a shadowy prog churn pitched between new-romantic vocal sheen and EBM muscle, with Kate Miller completely rewiring the script on Sub Series E - a masterfully minimal, double-time meditation. suki presents his Sniper1 alias to close with a demonic body-jacking groove loaded for the system.

Nagoyaka Na Kaze / 和やかな風 (quiet Wind)

'nagoyaka na kaze / 和やかな風 (quiet wind)': a collection of forward-thinking electronic experiments sourced from central Japan - co-curated by Nagoya artist abentis for Facta & K-LONE’s Wisdom Teeth imprint.

The project profiles a close-knit community of music makers operating in and around the Japanese city of Nagoya: one of the country’s most populous and industrial cities, but one all too often overlooked in terms of its cultural significance.

Curated in close collaboration with local scene organiser Yuya Abe - aka abentis - the record seeks to capture the creative energy of a community of artists making hard-to-define, future-facing electronic music away from the clamour of the bigger cities. “In Nagoya, there’s a strong culture of supporting artists. Even if you pursue music in your own way, as long as it’s good, you’re encouraged to keep doing what you want”, explains abentis. “Within that environment, my generation has been able to freely bring in elements we like from all kinds of genres, combine them in our own way, and express ourselves individually. If you go to Tokyo or Osaka, that kind of freedom isn’t something you can take for granted.”

Spiritually, Nagoya fits the mould of cultural hotbeds like Bristol, Detroit or Melbourne, showing that some of the most innovative creative communities form away from the glare of the capital cities. Like Detroit, Nagoya is principally known for being a major auto manufacturing hub, famous for being the home of Toyota Motors - but behind the scenes, it is quietly harbouring one of Japan’s most vibrant and forward-thinking electronic music scenes. “In a good way, Nagoya is a bit removed from the cutting edge, so you find people making all kinds of music”, explains Karnage. “If you’re making music, you feel like part of the crew, and people of different ages mix together without much hierarchy.”

The city’s music scene is characterised by a freedom to mix genres and an open-door approach to creatives of all disciplines. The artists featured come from a diverse set of backgrounds, ranging from hip-hop to noise music, but have found a common collective identity in their omnivorous approach to genre. As such, the record moves fluidly between shimmering ambient and new age (Am Shhara, DHYAN, daiki hayakawa), psychedelic minimal house (Methodd, abentis), abstract, low-slung downtempo (baptisma, Nasty Soupman) and spaceage steppas (Karnage). “I’d say the way ambient, new age and that kind of sound design are blending nicely with dance music feels somewhat new”, says baptisma, the crew’s eldest member and de-facto scene leader. Responsible for bringing artists like Basic Channel, Mala and Jan Jelinek to the city, baptisma has been crucial in establishing underground electronic music in Nagoya since the 90s, and now helps cultivate the next generation of local talent. “Artists and DJs are seamlessly mixing ambient and new age with techno, house and bass music. I think that’s a really interesting development.”

'nagoyaka na kaze' has its roots in a one-off event held in October 2024 as part of the 10 Years of Wisdom Teeth Japan tour. Curated by abentis in collaboration with Facta & K-LONE, the showcase featured live sets from eight artists based in and around Nagoya at one of the city’s key dance music hubs, Club JB’s. Each of the artists features again here, on record, presenting an original commission produced especially for the project.

The record’s art direction was led by Yudai Osawa - in-house designer for Kankyō Records, the much-loved Tokyo record shop run by H. Takahashi - and features original photos by Hayato Watanabe.

Naive Melodies

Naive Melodies is a bold and visionary tribute to the music of Talking Heads, reinterpreted through the lens of Black musical innovation. Curated by Drew McFadden — the creative mind behind BBE’s acclaimed Modern Love (David Bowie tribute album) — this new collection dives deep into the Afro-diasporic rhythms and experimental soul roots that helped shape Talking Heads’ unmistakable New Wave sound. Inspired by artists like Fela Kuti, Parliament, and Al Green — whose influences loomed large in the band’s rhythmic DNA — Naive Melodies shines a light on the Black music traditions that underpinned their artistry. Far from a conventional tribute, Naive Melodies reframes the band’s catalog through the voices and visions of a new generation of genre-defying artists. These interpretations illuminate the foundational grooves and sonic textures that fueled Talking Heads’ rhythm-forward aesthetic, bringing them full circle with authenticity. “With Naive Melodies, I wanted to spotlight the deep and often overlooked influence of Black music on the sound of Talking Heads, drawing from the rhythmic foundations of Afro-diasporic traditions, soul, gospel, Latin, and spiritual jazz. This project is a chance to reimagine Talking Heads’ legacy through the lens of the very innovations that helped shape it, bringing those influences to the forefront through the voices of today’s most forward-thinking artists.” — Drew McFadden The album features a globally minded lineup, including Liv.e, Bilal, Rogê, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Aja Monet, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Theo Croker, Kenny Dope, Rosie Lowe, Pachyman, W.I.T.C.H., and more — spanning Afrobeat, jazz, soul, funk, gospel, dub, electronica, orchestral, and Latin styles. It reflects not only the boundary-pushing ethos of Talking Heads, but also the influence of Black music as a cultural force that helped shape it. This is not just a tribute album — it’s a recontextualization. A cultural conversation. A rhythmic reawakening.

Highway Of Diamonds - Black America Sings Bob Dylan

Ace’s small but ever-evolving “Black America Sings…” series has been quiet of late, but it springs back into action this month with the 2-LP and CD releases of “Highway Of Diamonds” – a second dip onto the catalogue of Bob Dylan, as reimagined by some of the foremost African-American artists of the 20th century.

From almost the start of his songwriting career, Dylan’s words and music have impacted on black American music, with ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’, speaking to an America that was still mostly segregated and becoming an anthem for all colours and creeds. As Dylan’s own career progressed, so did the number of covers he received, with a significant amount coming from what might be termed ‘non-traditional’ sources such as those heard here.

The 20 songs on “Highway Of Diamonds” continue the story that was told in part on the earlier “How Many Roads” compilation, with an almost entirely different selection of artists lending their voices to some of the best songwriting of the 20th century, and an almost entirely different selection of songs (with the exception of ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’ itself, which provides a common thread linking the story told across the two sets).

Big names from the worlds of soul, gospel and jazz, timeless songs and, for many, new ways of appreciating ever-durable material make “Highway Of Diamonds” as essential a purchase as its predecessor.

As ever, the great audio is complemented by a handsomely illustrated package on both CD and double vinyl, with a plethora of illustrations and in depth song-by-song-and-track-by-track annotation by Ace legend Tony Rounce.

In 2023 Ace Records released the album “28 Little Bangers From Richard Hawley’s Jukebox” where the acclaimed Sheffield musician, singer and songwriter compiled together some of his favourite records. These were instrumentals and vocals records that he had collected over the years and found musically addictive. The album received fantastic reviews and allowed his extensive fanbase to discover and enjoy tracks like Ronny Kae’s ‘Swinging Drums’ and King Curtis’ ‘Hot-Rod’ that were on the juke box in his home.

One again, this second version of “Little Bangers” is full of cracking records such as Chet Atkins ‘Boo Boo Stick Beat’, Frank Minion’s ‘Watermelon’, Johnny Todd’s ‘Pink Cadillac’, Sunshine Theatre’s ‘Mountain’, Jet Harris’ ‘Man From Nowhere’, Tracy Rogers ‘Baby’ and the Ventures ‘Fuzzy And Wild’.

A with the first album there are 28 tracks spread across two albums or shoehorned onto one CD. The extensive liner notes see Richard discussing each and every track and what the record or artist meant to him. Don't Let Him Hurt You! Girl Group Sounds USA 1962-1968

From Ace Records’ early days, there’s always been a place in our hearts for music’s feminine side. A year having flown by since the release of our last compilation spotlighting the US girl group sound of the 60s – think castanets, anguished teen sirens, Svengali-esque producers and mini-sonatas about dreaming, dancing and moody boyfriends (sometimes deceased) – means the time has come for a new vinyl-only volume.

As 1968 drew to a close, the golden age of girl groups had seemingly been and gone: the Shangri-Las, Ronettes and Chiffons, for example, hadn’t had a hit record of note since 1966. Then along came ‘Condition Red’, a cleverly produced psychodrama performed by the Goodees, who grace the front cover and open the top side of this new comp in dramatic style. Over on the generally more soulful second side, Les Chansonettes are first up with ‘Don’t Let Him Hurt You’, a big production stomper written with Martha & the Vandellas in mind.

Elsewhere, Beverly Williams performs the very Lesley Gore-like ‘One Way Street’; ‘Go Away’ by the Murmaids (of ’66) is a lavishly produced number with a chamber pop vibe; ‘What Did You Do Last Night’ by the Drake Sisters was recorded in Phase-O-Phonic Sound; the lyrics of Denita James’ ‘Wild Side’ call to mind genre classics such as ‘He’s A Rebel’, ‘Out In The Streets’ and ‘Chico’s Girl’; and the Sweathearts close the show with a gorgeous harmony-filled update of the mid-50s oldie ‘Eddie My Love’. As usual in this series, the inner sleeve features a picture-packed 4,000-word track commentary by long-serving compiler Mick Patrick.

Tempa shine a spotlight on their current roster with a double vinyl bumper pack of soundsystem wreckers and serious sub woofer stimulation. Alongside Deep Medi, Tempa have been pivotal at presenting the best of UK bass, dubstep and garage. Firmly rooted in the dance and designed for big rigs, all artists featured here more than deliver the goods. Whether its the bass pressure cooker of Slikback's "Sea" or the skitty garage momentum of D1, via the riotous UKF-inspired melee of "Fantasy Dub" by INVT; its a brilliantly low frequency focus on riddims and bass by some of the finest to do it. Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History Of Gary Young & Pavement (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

A journey through the musical life of Gary Young, the subject of the SXSW-winning documentary 'Louder Than You Think' and the wild polymath best known as the original drummer for indie royalty Pavement.

Original music created by Noah Georgeson and Edward W. Dahl is presented alongside ultra-rare Pavement live tracks and something quite special: a Gary Young-penned oddity that Gary's old friend Scott 'Spiral Stairs' Kannberg turned into a suitably trippy musical track (spiced with some Stephen Malkmus feedback yowls), recorded for the movie shortly before Gary's passing in August 2023.

Proudly resistant to genres and conventions, the 'Louder Than You Think' soundtrack is as complex, fun, puzzling and ultimately lovable as the alcohol-fuelled hippie who helped define the sound of all things lo-fi, indie rock and slacker in between headstands

CBGB: A New York City Soundtrack 1975-1986

“CBGB was a place for the dirty people.” - Jimmy Destri of Blondie

“Afterwards, I took off and went crosstown to CBGB’s, the stronghold of the unknown, to be with my own people.” - Patti Smith

In December 1973 Hilly Kristal changed the name of his roots music bar from Hilly’s on the Bowery to CBGB and altered his musical policy to hire mostly rock bands. He was indifferent to many of them (“No one is going to like you guys, but I’ll have you back,” he told Joey Ramone), blissfully unaware of how important his scruffy little club would soon become.

In the span of only 15 months, the five groups that comprise the CBGB’s pantheon all debuted: Television in March 1974, followed by Ramones in August and Blondie in October, then Patti Smith in February 1975 and Talking Heads four months later.

Those five groups all quickly got record deals and became popular enough to outgrow CBGB’s. By the fall of 1977, Smith was the only one who was still playing there. What succeeded the Big Five was an array of new and retro styles, all of which feature here: No Wave (Sonic Youth, Mars, DNA, Bush Tetras), post-punk (Ritual Tension, Unknown Gender, Khmer Rouge), mutant funk and R&B (James Chance & The Contortions, Mink DeVille), art-rock bands (R.L. Crutchfield’s Dark Day, The Revelons, Erasers, Jeff and Jane Hudson) hardcore punk (Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Vatican Commandos, Beastie Boys), and lots of power pop (Sorrows, The dBs, The Rudies, The Miamis, The Paley Brothers) .

The club’s best-known bands are present on this compilation but we’ve also revived interest in dozens of unfairly forgotten acts that, for a moment in time, made an album, EP, 45, or even a demo that crackled with innovation, wit, and joy.

CBGB no longer exists, at least not in the physical plane, but what happened between those soot-filled, beer-stinking walls continues to reverberate around the world.

Cumbia Cumbia Cumbia!!! Vol. 4

The historical origins of cumbia are nebulous and imprecise. The mythology surrounding it suggests an ancient past when Amerindian, African and European musical sounds were mixed together.

After digging deep into the overwhelming archives of Discos Fuentes, Codiscos and Discos MAG in their previous volumes, this fourth instalment in the series 'Cumbia Cumbia Cumbia!!!' comprises 28 Colombian cumbia bangers for the dance floor from the deep vaults of Discos Tropical, all of them originally released between 1960 and 1984.

Discos Tropical was a Barranquilla-based label founded in the mid-1940s by Luis Emilio Fortou Pereira, a visionary who helped define Colombian dancing habits and tastes from the previous century. Until the late '50s, most cumbias were orchestral-based. However, even though formats and styles diversified from the following decade onward, these highly popular big bands spectacularly defined the sound of Discos Tropical and livened up the most cosmopolitan dances in the major coastal cities. After the mid-'60s, the big bands gradually fell into decline, but the popular demand for tropical music did not. Facing this situation, the major record companies created smaller-format groups with one particular feature: they mixed accordion music with brass bands.

This new volume of 'Cumbia Cumbia Cumbia!!!' combines well-known classics and rarities that are difficult to find in their original formats. An invitation to enjoy and be amazed, above and beyond ethnographic and academic concerns.

DJ-Kicks: Moodymann

In 2016, a year after the 50th entry in the long-running series, none other but the iconic Detroit artist, DJ and producer Moodymann stepped up to helm the next landmark edition of DJ-Kicks, his first ever multi-artist DJ mix compilation. Following !K7's 40 th anniversary, this classic DJ-Kicks mix is now being repressed on coke bottle clear vinyl.

Born Kenny Dixon Jr., Moodymann is a one-of-a-kind electronic music icon, hailing from, and wholly synonymous with the Motor City. He is an outspoken, impossibly charismatic artist who has been putting a distinctive and soulful stamp on house and techno since the early 90s. Melting together jazz, funk, soul, blues and rock in captivating ways, he is responsible for some of electronic music’s most definitive tracks, EPs and LPs on labels like Planet E, Peacefrog and his own KDJ and Mahogani Music imprints. As able to serve up the sweetest and most sensual sounds as he is the darkest and most depraved grooves, his own unique voice and stream of conscious musings infuse expertly sought-out samples for music that is decisively alive and authentic.

Across 75 minutes and 30 tracks, Moodymann does not disappoint: despite being a notorious vinyl fetishist, Dixon’s aim is to present music of quality, not to one-up fellow collectors. Rather than serving up ridiculously rare or hard- to-find records, he instead focuses on creating a libidinous, blues-drenched mood that takes in heart-breaking soul, gorgeous hip-hop and love-fuelled house.

In addition to cuts from his own creative circle, the mix features 11 exclusive Moodymann edits. Like everything Kenny Dixon Jr. touches, his DJ-Kicks showcases the taste, skill, and soul of a dance music original.

Musik Music Musique 1979

We present the fourth volume in this critically acclaimed series - this time a prequel, exploring the transitional year 1979, a period which saw electronic pop move from curio, fad and novelty status into the credible post-punk pop landscape. A story of experimental and eccentric artists, outsider aesthetics and the fusion of the spirit of punk with a pop sensibility.

Featuring an array of artists who would become household names and dominate the pop scene during the first half of the 1980s, alongside lesser-known scenesters, independent innovators and one-off scene hoppers, ‘Musik Music Musique 1979’ provides a perfect backdrop to our previous three volumes. Call it a prequel, call it back story - packed with great pop music, a twist of the weird and wonderful and plenty of floor-fillers, this is a snapshot of a vital year in the wake punk rock, when a new path suggested throughout the 1970s was finally cut, paved and explored.

Eclectic, endlessly innovative and, most importantly, enduringly listenable, ‘Music Musik Musique 1979’ is an international adventure, throwing the spotlight on those brave enough to take the first steps into the rainbow of electronic music that would come to define the 1980s.

Soul Jazz Records’ new ‘Junglist!’ is a heavyweight new selection of classic and rare original jungle and features Krome & Time, Cutty Ranks, M-Beat, Bizzy B, Lemon D, Top Cat and more.

‘Junglist!’ tells the story of how jungle and reggae came together to produce some of the heaviest tunes ever made.

This album follows on from earlier jungle and hardcore releases on Soul Jazz Records, including ‘Rumble in the Jungle’, Ragga Twins ‘Step Off’ and ‘Black Riot - Early Jungle, Rave and Hardcore’.

Maledetta Discoteca's journey through “Música Para Boliche” literally “music for the club” from Argentina’s underground scene doesn’t stop. They dug even deeper, right into the ’90s presenting five tracks, all visionary even at the time of their release. Once again, you can feel the magical touch of the Italian and Argentine DJs who worked on it.

Jack Bulgaro did his part, bringing home an instrumental unreleased version of "Podés Seguir Sin Arriesgarte", taken from the album "Undermalabia", produced by El Signo, pioneers of electronic music in Latin America.

Limited edition and vinyl only, "Música Para Boliche Vol. II" takes your right to the heart of the Agentina's proto-house scene.

Pop Ambient 2026

For the 26th time, the most consistent of all ambient compilations, in a constant flux of static change, is released on Kompakt. Joining good friends from the early days and reliable confidants are some new additions to the non-hierarchical charts of contemplative rapture culture.

Leading the way is Micå, a Japanese electronic musician whose finely chiseled, graceful musical style has made it onto the new collection with two pieces. Also making his debut is Richard Ojijo, a seasoned sound engineer known, among other things, for his long-standing collaboration with the artist Marcel Odenbach and the Cologne-based label Magazine. Oskø aka Max Hytrek, a multi-talented newcomer to Kompakt and the music scene, debuts with his rapturously ecstatic piece "Ar Vag." He's followed by Sebastian Mullaert, appearing for the second time—this time teamed up with Sebastian Lilja aka Hush Forever. After his surprise return last year after a 20 year hiatus, we are delighted that Tetsuo Sakae aka Pass Into Silence is back again this year with one of his distinctive sound gems. As are Dirk Leyers (Closer Musik) and Mikkel Metal. 18 tracks are featured on this CD. "Erlösung" (Redemption) is the title of Segensklang's closing track. A kind of ambient bolero into infinity. Or at least until next year...

And what would Pop Ambient be without the iconic, artistic cover design of Veronika Unland, who once again, in her unmistakable way, says through the digital flower: The eye always listens...

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: You just can't beat Kompakt for spine-tingling melodic Berlinny synth music. Snapping, delayed arpeggios and snappy LPG's. It's not all pretty though, there are moments of heft and unease, brittle shards of melody and swelling walls of tension. As always, a masterclass in atmospheric synth and tension / release dynamics from one of the best labels in the land.

Piccadilly Records Compilation 2025

We’re super excited to unveil our annual Piccadilly Records Compilation, a deep dive into the sounds that defined our year. And for the first time ever the vinyl has been joined by a CD edition including nine bonus tracks.

But let’s begin with the vinyl compilation.
Featuring twelve tracks from artists in our EOY Top 20, here’s a brief track-by-track synopsis.

A1 Rude Films “Death Hex”
From the album ‘Rude Films’ - No.2 in the Piccadilly Top 100
Kicking off this year’s vinyl compilation, Rude Films strike hard and heavy with “Death Hex”; a devastating, monolithic opener that fuses Mogwai’s loud/quiet dynamics with soaring vocal harmonies.

A2 Geese “Taxes”
From the album ‘Getting Killed’ - No.4 in the Piccadilly Top 100
Currently creating a seismic stir with their new album, “Taxes” embarks on an epic odyssey through shifting moods and styles - perfectly encapsulating the album’s essence.

A3 Momma “I Want You (Fever)’
From the album ‘Welcome To My Blue Sky’ - No.6 in the Piccadilly Top 100
Brooklyn’s Momma keep the tempo high with a breezy indie-pop anthem - packed with driving guitar hooks and soaring melodic vocals that The Breeders would’ve nailed in their prime.

A4 Big Thief “Los Angeles”
From the album ‘Double Infinity’ - No.3 in the Piccadilly Top 100
Taking the tempo down a notch, Big Thief's understated brilliance comes to the fore with “Los Angeles”. A warm folky sound that wraps itself around Adrianne Lenker’s unmistakable vocals. Intimate, classy and timeless!

A5 Emma-Jean Thackray “Staring At the Wall”
From the album ‘Weirdo’ - No.10 in the Piccadilly Top 100
The jazz infused “Staring At The Wall” combines minimal keys and sparse synthesized beats with raw and emotional vocals. A deeply personal track born from a period of loss and introspection.

A6 Pulp “Spike Island”
From the album ‘More’ - No.5 in the Piccadilly Top 100
Big hitters Pulp close out Side A in euphoric style. “Spike Island” is Pulp at their best; an anthemic and evocative track recalling the near mythical Stone Roses gig in 1990.

B1 Lael Neale “Wild Waters”
From the album ‘Altogether Stranger’ - No.7 in the Piccadilly Top 100
Lael Neale’s sparkling “Wild Waters” heads up Side B with its synthetic handclaps, motorik pulse, and sugar-sweet vocals. Echoes of Spacemen 3 and VU drift through her minimalist drone-pop landscape.

B2 Nightbus “Ascension”
From the album ‘Passenger’ - No.8 in the Piccadilly Top 100
Flowing on with an electro-pop pulse Nightbus’ “Ascension” simply glides and glistens in a weightless blissed out space, moving along like prime time New Order, detached but beautiful.

B3 Andy Bell “I’m In Love…”
From the album ‘Pinball Wanderer’ - No.14 in the Piccadilly Top 100
Andy Bell sustains the shimmering dream-pop soundscape on his cover of “I’m In Love With A German Film Star”; an epic, ethereal kosmische collaboration with Dot Allison and Neu!’s Michael Rother.

B4 Sydney Minsky Sargeant “I Don't Wanna” ***
From the album ‘Lunga’ - No.11 in the Piccadilly Top 100
Sidestepping his Working Men’s Club project, Sydney delivers an LP of languid alt-folk. With its gentle acoustic guitars and subtle flowing synths, “I Don’t Wanna” offers a perfect snapshot of the album.

B5 Kokoroko “Never Lost”
From the album ‘Tuff Times Never Last’ - No.20 in the Piccadilly Top 100
The mood remains mellow with Kokoroko’s sublime “Never Lost”, a beautifully lilting piece of soulful jazz. Vibrant harmonies shimmer throughout, radiating like golden sunshine for the ears.

B6 Antony Szmierek “The Great Pyramid Of Stockport”
From the album ‘Service Station At The End Of The Universe’ - No.1 in the Piccadilly Top 100
The compilation closes on a high with the bombastic ode to “The Great Pyramid Of Stockport”. Our Album of the Year hero delivers his poetic lyrical flow over a backdrop of thumping dance beats, swirling synths, and intricate guitar licks.

*** A vinyl only track.

The CD edition of Piccadilly Records Compilation 2025 features nine bonus tracks hand-picked from our Collections, Singles, and Genre charts; though it loses the vinyl only Sydney Minsky Sargeant track. With 20 tracks in total and a reworked sequence the CD runs to a glorious 80 minutes in total.

Here’s a brief review of the bonus tracks:
Mancunian outfit Westside Cowboy have been making serious waves across the country with their off-kilter slacker indie-rock, and “I’ve Never Met Anyone…” is a killer cut from their debut EP, definitely ones to watch in 2026!

Having earned early support from Andrew Weatherall and, more recently, Richard Fearless, Andrew Innes and David Holmes, Belfast’s Deeply Armed affirm their credentials with “The Healing”, a propulsive kosmische psyche-dance mantra charged with hypnotic energy.

Ghost Assembly turn up the intensity with thumping synth stabs on the glorious acid chugger “Resist!”, whilst Alex Kassian follows up last year’s epic “A Reference To E2-E4…” with another monumental rework in the form of Spooky’s "Orange Coloured Liquid”.

Blurring the boundaries between Balearic, kosmische, disco and psych; Psychederek woo us again with the blissed-out 80s Ibiza vibe of “Thinkin' Bout U”. Whilst Piccadilly staffer Barry, under his Apta guise, provides a beautifully warm slice of electronica with “The Depths” before we drift into the deep, meditative jazz of “Love Theme From Your Life” courtesy of LA’s Phi-Psonics.

Ellen Beth Abdi lays down the majestically soulful “Sad Chord” and finally Christian (The Earlies) Madden & The Enemy Chorus’ gloriously funky “Twice As Thick” is the standout pick from Two Piers ‘Soul Psychédélique (The Sounds Of Psychedelic Soul & Funk 1967-2024)’, our Collection of the Year!

Mambo Calypso

Zombie Club presents a reedition of 'Mambo Calypso' another volume of sonic Caribbean Cruise. Following the approach of the first volume and understanding the Caribbean as a region is not limited to a strictly geographical demarcation but rather a demographic and cultural space where countries, islands and coastal areas may fall into a common Mare Nostrum even arrives in New Orleans. The influence of African drum and the "Cuban clave" makes different music beyond its specific components be they Latinos, Anglos or Frenchie’s - look at themselves and recognize a certain family.

This is not a coincidence, since the slave trade brought African music from the port of Havana to Cartagena de Indias, Nassau, Port-au-Prince, Salvador de Bahía and the southern United States. The same Blackness, the same rhythm, the same festive mood, spirit of resistance and struggle. And so, Arsenio Rodriguez can be heard without jumps next to a Calypso of Blind Blake, or a tasty Pacho Galán’s coastal Cumbia crossover with Dave Bartholomew’s Mambo or a Latin Swing of Lalo Guerrero, where the Dominican Merengue sounds Joseíto Mateo in line with that of its Haitian neighbor Nemour Jean Baptiste. A very spicy musical "melting pot," a gumbo of percussion and languages, to enjoy and dance.

Re-board the Zombie Club Cruise, will not be disappointed.

No-One's Listening Anyway - UK DIY Post Punk & Dubs 1978-1984 (Volume 2) - Compiled By Jason Boardman

Now, following great acclaim for Volume 1, CTR is proud to unveil another equally eclectic Post-Punk Era Selection Compiled by Jason Boardman ( Before I Die Records) Celebrated Manchester club-night curator & record Label Owner , DJ & digger - supreme.

A second compilation of late 1970s / early 1980s Post-Punk era bedroom & small studio innovations & DIY Inspirations - Featuring more rarely & never heard cuts from that period. Including tracks from the enigmatic Prana, Blank Students, Janet Armstrong & The Native Hipsters ..A rich vein

"It was a delightful shock that No Ones Listening Anyway Volume One was so well received - thanks to everyone one who bought & enjoyed it. This led to John asking me to collate Volume Two, so here it is.

This time all the material was recorded & released in the UK between 1978 & 1984.

I was conscious that there was minimal female energy on Volume One so have tried to rectify that here on Volume Two. I have also tried to make it as varied as possible with none hit wonders, oddities, collectables, under the radar B-sides & a couple of previously unreleased on vinyl selections."
(Jason Boardman June 2025)

Nicola Conte Presents Viagio

"This is a journey through a largely forgotten world," explains Conte. "While major jazz recording opportunities were scarce, an incredible network of small labels owned by publishing companies - often created by the composers themselves - began to flourish. This created an open space where musicians could express more experimental and free thinking sounds."

At the heart of Viaggio stands Amedeo Tommasi, the sophisticated jazz pianist who emerged in 1960 backing international stars like Chet Baker, Bobby Jaspar, and Jacques Pelzer. Tommasi was among Italy's earliest artists to introduce Black US modal jazz influences, and traditional recording opportunities dwindled, he pivoted to soundtrack and library music, helping define a distinctly Italian sound that bridged experimental jazz with the emerging possibilities afforded by developments in synthesizer and recording technologies.

The compilation features rare gems from small label outputs, namely the Cenacolo and Rotary label catalogs. Tommasi's contemporaries include the great Alessandro Alessandroni and his vocalist wife Giulia De Mutiis (Kema), Stefano Torrosi (under the Farlocco - meaning fake/phony), and Belgian composer Joel Vandroogenbroeck. The recordings capture the technological evolution of the era as beguiling synthesis often combines with global influences spanning Brazilian rhythms, jazz- funk explorations, and Middle Eastern scales.

"You can hear both the haunting melodies and sun-kissed atmospheres so typical of Italian culture from that era," Conte observes. "Some of these albums could have been proper artist releases, while others were specifically designed for accompanying images on screen, yet all were crafted with exploratory creativity that still resonates powerfully today."

"Endless" is a journey through cosmic soundscapes, where jazz-funk, early electronics, and ambient experimentation meet. Carefully curated by Charles Maurice from his personal collection, this compilation brings together 10 rare recordings from 1969 to 1985, revealing an era of fearless creativity and sonic exploration.

Marking 10 years since Charles Maurice’s first compilation in 2015, "Endless" also celebrates a milestone - his 13th release in a decade of unearthing rare and beautiful music from forgotten archives.

From Beaver & Krause and their pioneering Moog experiments to the lush electronic symphonies of Jean-Claude Petit, the dreamy synth work of Ector Davis, and the cinematic beauty of Bernard Larquet, each track opens a window into a different musical galaxy.

Highlights include Patrick Marcel’s privately pressed 1985 recording “Bagnols”, an atmospheric fusion of ambient textures and ECM-inspired jazz, and Wlodek Gulgowski’s Scandinavian jazz-funk masterpiece that bridges groove and cosmic elegance.

Unearthed from obscurity, "Endless - Universal Cosmic Sounds" celebrates a timeless vision of music without boundaries - a rediscovery of the rare, the beautiful, and the endlessly imaginative.

The saga of squelch continues. After the first round proved that the acid line might be the most durable cliché in dance music (and still the best one), part two turns the resonance knob a little further.

Steve Bug & Stefan Braatz, Deetron, Todd Osborn, and Mathew Jonson with The Mole join forces for another ode to the silver box - less museum piece, more perpetual motion machine. Proof that you can't retire a sound that never had a desk job.

Once again, Gasius supplies the visual psychedelia, while the tracks handle the auditory side of the trip. Dial 303, accept the charges, and remember: the only thing more reliable than acid is its ability to surprise you.

A Giant Has Nowhere To Go: Tongue Master Records Presents Selections From Comes With A Smile (2000-2006)

'A Giant Has Nowhere To Go: Tongue Master Records Presents Selections From Comes With A Smile (2000-2006)' is a celebratory vinyl-only release drawn from the magazine's sixteen cover-mounted compilation CDs. Across some 300 tracks, the magazine presented previously unheard tracks from its eclectic array of interviewees drawn from the worlds of the Singer Songwriter, Americana, Post-Rock, Electronica, and all things Indie.

Comes With A Smile's designer/editor Matt Dornan’s association with Tongue Master Records began with the first TM 7" and has continued to the present day. In some ways the association has come full circle with this curated release. The selections on this album represent the place where the worlds of Tongue Master and Cwas converge. Most remain exclusive to the magazine, and all appear on vinyl for the first time.

Side one features artists who appear in the Tongue Master discography - from established masters Mark Eitzel, Mark Mulcahy and Howe Gelb to the equally idiosyncratic stylings of New York’s The Scene Is Now, Athens’ Sigmatropic (featuring Edith Frost) and London’s cinematic The Real Tuesday Weld. The latter revisits a CWAS favourite, featuring a newly recorded vocal by Sephine Llo, exclusive to this release. Other contributions include intimate demos from Eitzel and Gelb (better known in embellished form by American Music Club and Giant Sand respectively), to standalone gems like Mulcahy’s 'Elephantine' (which gives this collection its title) and the bruised avant-garde blues of The Scene Is Now’s 'The Word'.

The tracks on side two and the accompanying 7” are a diverse selection drawn from the sixteen CDs CWAS issued between 2000 and 2006 that reflect and complement the oeuvre of Tongue Master Records. Here you will find the dense literature-infused art-folk of Lullaby For The Working Class, the sparse acoustic balladry of Nina Nastasia and the curious Matmos-enhanced stylings of veteran polymath and fellow New Yorker David Grubbs. In their wake comes an epic jazz-tinged duel between Douglas McCombs’s Brokeback and sometime labelmates Chicago Underground Duo, and the raw gothic Americana of Blanche. The LP concludes with a haunting lo-fi lament by the sorely missed Jason Molina in his Songs: Ohia guise. The 7" presents two further gems: a concise edit of the lengthy title track from a 2005 12” tour EP from CWAS regulars The American Analog Set, and an acoustic rendition of a track from the album ‘The Great Destroyer’ by shapeshifting veterans Low from the same year.

Together the fourteen tracks hint at the breadth of the CWAS archive, a treasure trove from a not-too-distant musical past. With full lyrics, a special four page insert tracing the history of the magazine, and an Alex Wharton Abbey Road cut, this quality release is a testament to the legacy of Comes With A Smile.

All The Young Droids: Junkshop Synth Pop 1978-1985

'All The Young Droids: Junkshop Synth Pop 1978-1985' is a new compilation that charts the underbelly of the epoch-defining sound of the synthesiser in 80s popular music. Compiled by Philip King (previously seen compiling All The Young Droogs, Glitterbest and Boobs - The Junkshop Glam Discotheque), the music here connects the dots between DIY synth enthusiasts grappling with new, cheap synthesisers at the tail-end of punk and wannabe, jobbing songwriters enthral to the new music pioneered by Gary Numan, Depeche Mode and Daniel Miller’s Mute Records. Featuring rare tracks of auto-didactic progressive pop music, proto-techno punk, shoot-for-the-stars-land-in-the-gutter chart flops and heralded, underground synth classics, School Daze paints a picture of beautiful failure.

Complete with extensive sleeve notes written by King and never before seen imagery, all 24 tracks were remastered by RPM in-house engineer Simon Murphy, many from vinyl copies due to lost master tapes. The story told on All The Young Droids is one of the dawning opportunity presented by both the emergence to the market of cheaper analog synthesisers and the distribution networks plus indie labels that exploded with the advent of punk music in 1976. While the music that sprouted out all over the globe in the wake of these factors was decried as fake, plastic, a refutation of punk’s guitar-led revolution, it’s telling that much of the music on All The Young Droids.. was created in bedrooms, ramshackle studios and home-made set ups with often borrowed equipment. In the era of record labels jumping to capitalise on the success of The Sex Pistols, The Clash (both on major labels, of course) these artists struggled to stand out from a new gold-rush with next to no budget or PR team. With radio and labels desperate for the new Yazoo, what resulted was a testament to necessity being the mother of invention.

At the time, the synthesiser was the music of the future, a shiny new machine that could paint like an orchestra with a single finger and a 4-track. In the hands of Manchester avant-pranksters Gerry & The Holograms it’s a pulsing, sardonic weapon.. the only instrument on the Messthetics classic lampooning of New Wave fashion. In Hamburg, a 16 year old Andreas Dorau used it to write and record (with his female classmates on vocals) a global smash in Fred Vom Jupiter (later licensed to Mute Records). The hard-to-find English version (Fred From Jupiter, natch) is included here. Many artists with already-storied careers caught the bug and recorded synthesiser-fuelled peons to space, computers, the future and, of course, love-interests. Harry Kakoulli, late of Squeeze, recorded a solo album in 1979 that included the incredible power-synth-pop smash-that-never-smashed I’m On A Rocket. Similarly, Ian North of Neo and American Power Pop stalwarts Milk ’n’ Cookies bought a Korg MS20 and used a tape machine to record We’re Not Lonely, an absolute lost-classic of minimal synth pop. We’re Not Lonely also features on the Junkshop Synth Pop sampler 7” twinned with John Howard unreleased track You Will See, released April 12th 2025.

There are plenty of compilation debuts in evidence. Sole Sister were a mysterious trio who were featured on the Scaling Triangles compilation of female-fronted, queer-adjacent post-punk / underground music that also featured The Petticoats. Selwin Image were from San Francisco and featured members of the recently defunct power pop/punk group The Pushups. Their stupidly catchy The Unknown fizzes with New Wave energy - think XTC to Sparks but remains unreleased until now. Dream Unit’s A Drop In The Ocean is an early synth wave cut, positively teaming with Joy Division instrumentation, previously only released on a long-forgotten and super rare, self-released EP. Incandescent Luminaire’s Famous Names belies an archetypal struggle of a small-town trying to make it in a cruel industry but is a thrilling New Romantic-Synth Wave cross over with a OMD gloominess that’s a joy to hear. Feminist Minimal Wave track I Am A Time Bomb by performance artist Peta Lilly and Michael Chance is a revelation destined for new found cult status. It was released on 7” and lost until now.

The flipside to the subterranean, never-made-it synth pop mentioned above are the ambitious, even fruity attempts at success that have a perennial elegance to their confidence. New Jersey-ite Billy London (real name Ed Barth) tried to cash in on the synth boom with Woman, released by a major label, a lurching new wave track built on the Louie Louie rhythm and a wonderfully camp Lou Reed-style sleazy vocal before exploding in the synthesised chorus. The song bombed but with a chorus like this, you have to wonder why? Ex-Glitter Band member John Springate’s My Life is truly epic, with doomed chord progressions and massive sounding drums turning into at least 3 different songs in the course of the track. Before you wonder what’s going on the song resolves with a glorious return to the main refrain.

The dry-ice-dressed dance floor is well catered for too. Design’s Premonition and Vision’s Lucifer’s Friend are stone-cold minimal synth bangers, well loved but given a new lease of life here. The Warlord’s The Ultimate Warlord was released in 1978, a homespun proto Hi NRG banger that was later re-recorded by The Immortals in Canada who had a club hit with it. One-man- band Disco Volante’s No Motion was re-issued by Synth wave label Medical in 2012 but makes its first vinyl compilation appearance here. Close your eyes and you can imagine what Lawrence of Felt would have sounded like with some cheap Korgs a little earlier in his career. Gibraltar-based trio The Microbes imagined a computer programming people to dance - how prescient - and ended up with a propulsive, robo-funk track with splendid rubbery bass playing over a tectonic drum machine. Previously picked up by Belgian label Stroom TV, Dee Jay Bert & Eagle’s heavily Euro-accented I Am Your Master demands the listener to “come to paradise!” In a frankly terrifying manner. All The Young Droids is the first compilation to peel away from the narrative that dour, Minimal Synth and Cold Wave were the only musical children of the first rush of synth pop. Philip King and School Daze Records describe a much more complicated world: along with the austere, Brutalist children of Daniel Miller (who produced Alan Burnham’s Bowie-Low-influenced Science Fiction here) was a plethora of desperate cash-ins, accidental mainstream hits, ambitious pop dramas and major label punts that went nowhere. Crucially, the compilation blurs the line between junk and treasure. What if the two things are interchangeable. What if it’s all science fiction?

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A wonderfully off-piste collection of angular synth ditties and stumbling grooves, wrought through self-made oscillators and cobbled-together drum machines and resulting in some of the most divinely uncomplicated melodies in music history. A hugely varied selection of superb songwriting at the pinnacle of innovation.

Metal Machine Music: Power To Consume, Vol. 1 - Black Friday 2025 Edition

THIS IS A BLACK FRIDAY 2025 EXCLUSIVE.

Inspired by Lou Reed’s groundbreaking 1975 noise opus 'Metal Machine Music', this collection assembles a formidable lineup of sonic provocateurs—Aaron Dilloway, Drew McDowall, Thurston Moore, Pharmakon, The Rita, and Mark Solotroff—to explore the outer edges of distortion, feedback, and raw electronic texture.

Each artist channels the spirit of Reed’s original manifesto of anti-music, pushing their own boundaries through modular synthesis, tape manipulation, harsh noise, and industrial decay. The result is a visceral, immersive experience that celebrates chaos, confronts structure, and redefines what music can be.

Viva Marina

Viva Marina celebrates the 100th release of Marina Records. The label was founded in Hamburg in 1993 by Stefan Kassel and Frank Lähnemann. Over the years the label released many outstanding albums by artists like The Pearlfishers, Shack, Brent Cash, The Bathers, James Kirk, The Free Design, Malcolm Ross, Ashby, Paul Quinn & The Independent Group, Der Plan, and many many more - incl. the best-selling Beach Boys/ Brian Wilson tribute album Caroline Now!. Plus anthologies by The Pale Fountains (Longshot For Your Love), Josef K (Endless Soul), Jazzateers (I Shot The President) and by soundtrack maestro Peter Thomas (Moonflowers & Mini-Skirts).

..And three volumes of the legendary compilation series The In-Kraut featuring German Beat, Soul, Soundtrack & Groove nuggets from the 60s & 70s. Henry Rollins is a huge fan of the series, apparently. The brand The In-Kraut - often stolen and copied - was originated & copyrighted by Marina. The label has also been hailed for its distinctive packaging & look - designed (and often photographed) by the label’s Stefan Kassel.

The label’s main musical influences are definitely the three BIG Bs - Burt Bacharach, The Beach Boys and The Beatles. Plus growing up listening to John Peel’s radio show - and its eclectic, always colourful and exciting musical universe.

Viva Marina is the 4th of the label’s acclaimed compilations - following in the footsteps of In Bed With Marina, Ave Marina and Goosebumps. These compilations have all been elaborate classy affairs with lots of attention to detail (packaging / design / liner notes / photography / mastering). Artefacts of beautifully curated Pop Art. The new compilation - catalogue number MA100 - continues in that tradition. It features 21 tracks from the Marina roster and kindred spirits like Van Dyke Parks, The Kingfishers, Frank Schmiechen and Michel van Dyke. Featuring many exclusive and previously unissued contributions.

The album opens with the appropriately titled Listen by The Free Design and their heavenly vocal harmonies. Marina single-handedly initiated The Free Design’s reunion and their comeback album Cosmic Peekaboo (2001). The track is followed by Evelyn Pope (from Ashby) with her stunning new track Surround Yourself In Sound - sounding like NEU! meets Stereolab. Motorik meets Melody.

The compilation features a great and unique array of cover versions: David Scott of The Pearlfishers surprises with a truly marvelous version of Taylor Swift’s rather unknown nugget The Last Great American Dynasty. Eclectic pop duo Ashby from Boston put their magic touch to George McCrae’s 1974 Miami Disco Soul classic You Can Have It All. Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) & David Scott combine their perfect vocal harmony blend for a take on The Roches’ Hammond Song. All exclusives to this compilation.
Fascinator, a Glasgow supergroup of sorts - James Kirk (Orange Juice), Grahame Skinner (Hipsway / Jazzateers/ Cowboy Mouth) and Andy Alston (Del Amitri) - hit a classic Al Green-like Memphis Soul groove with their prev. unissued track Mississippi Mud. James Kirk also contributes a brand new song to the comp - in cahoots with his new partner Warren McInytre: the fabulous Iron Star (‘...getting down with Billy Ocean, filled with Sheila B. Devotion... Earth, Wind & Fire and The Emotions, we’re gonna do it again...’). A full album of the duo will follow in 2026. The Pearlfishers sparkle with a superb, piano-led new song called Limelight - recalling the soulful grace & beauty of Laura Nyro & Labelle.

Shack are presented with the wonderful, string-laden Carousel - in a prev unreleased, uncut ‘full version’. Marina released Shack’s classic album Waterpistol in 1995. The vinyl edition became a much sought-after and collectible - fetching prices of 400+ Euros these days.

Brent Cash from Athens is featured with the super-catchy killer pop of Good Morning Sunshine. He released three stunning albums on Marina of elaborately arranged and performed 60s style sunshine pop - reminiscent of Roger Nichols, Harpers Bizarre and The Association. The Bathers from Glasgow released three classic albums of beautiful chamber pop on Marina (‘The Marina trilogy’). Their No Risk No Glory makes its vinyl debut on Viva Marina. The Kingfishers - who have the distinction of appearing on all four Marina compilations - provide Byrds-like jingle-jangle Rickenbacker heaven with Long Lost Friend. Michel van Dyke seduces with a What’s Going On-like groove a la Marvin Gaye with his prev. unreleased Ich Find Dich Gut.
The legendary Dislocation Dance from Manchester enchant with the breezy jazz pop of It’s A Long Way Down - feat. the outstanding trumpet of Andy Diagram (The Pale Fountains/ James). More stunning trumpet action comes from Edinburgh’s Colin Steele Quartet who recorded three beautiful jazz albums for Marina - their most current one celebrating the music of The Blue Nile.

The compilation comes to a close with the haunting piano ballad Heartbroken All Over Again by Malcolm Ross (Josef K/Orange Juice/Aztec Camera) who recorded two fabulous solo albums for Marina. The track was produced by Dominic Murcott of The High Llamas. Master Van Dyke Parks provides the perfect coda to the compilation with his beautiful, cinematic, widescreen instrumental Chateau Marmont.

Enjoy 21 tracks / 75 minutes of pure aural pop pleasure. Viva Marina! ***

Something In The Water

The Bristol based record label - run by Ishmael Ensemble - have announced they will be collaborating with The Gallimaufry to release an end of year compilation featuring some of the up-and-coming artists regularly performing at the venue.

The ‘Galli’ has been a longtime supporter of grassroots music in the Bristol community with many acts such as Waldos Gift, Grove, Snazzback, TLK, George Ezra and more finding their feet and musical identity on the venue’s intimate stage over the years. The new compilation ‘Something In The Water’ (pencilled for release in late 2025) focuses on the current wave of young musicians regularly appearing at The Galli, and the album aims to showcase the wealth of talent emerging from the city, and respective artists’ journeys from stage to studio.

Under And Above The Clouds - Yacht Rock Grooves From Germany & Austria 1979-1991

When people think of Yacht Rock—those smooth, sun-drenched sounds that once drifted from Californian radio stations in the late '70s and early '80s—they rarely imagine it echoing through rehearsal rooms in Hamburg or Linz. Yet even far from the Pacific coastline, the appeal of shimmering chords, laid-back grooves, and polished production found fertile ground.

This compilation gathers rare and overlooked tracks from Germany and Austria. These artists embraced West Coast aesthetics with sincerity and subtle twists, resulting in music that feels both familiar and refreshingly new—smooth sounds for cloudy skies. So drop anchor, pour something cool, and enjoy this unexpected cruise through the lesser-charted waters of Euro Yacht Rock.

Our journey begins in Austria, where Reflection's Because (1981) set the tone with blue-eyed soul and analogue warmth—a sunlit blend of Doobie Brothers polish and local charm. Its creator, Dieter Heyduk, reappears with Austrian Sky, a heartfelt nod to his homeland that fuses mountain calm with oceanic longing.

From the North Sea island of Föhr, Ara Pacis dreamed of California on their 1979 self-release To the Westcoast. Inspired by Steely Dan and Lake, they turned German rock precision into breezy, melodic sophistication. Meanwhile, in Düsseldorf, Mainpoint fused funk and jazz-rock on Frisbee, their 1980 single bursting with rhythmic drive and optimism before the tide of the Neue Deutsche Welle swept such grooves aside.

Bremerhaven's Nuages offered the compilation's only instrumental gem, Strange Weekend (1985)—a gentle blend of jazz-funk and rock and largely lost to time. Its cool restraint captures the European interpretation of Californian ease.

Around the same period, British traveler Gavin James recorded River of Laughter in southern Germany, backed by the blues-rock band Black Cat Bone. His acoustic reflections on water and flow mirrored the soft, meditative pulse at Yacht Rock's core.

Berlin's Top Spin kept things playful with Bikin (1985), a funk-fusion snapshot of urban joy that showcased the city's finest session players. From the Ruhr area, the Jan Pack Band is up next. While not a typical Yacht Rock track, Cable Dance is driven by an effortless, groovy '80s vibe.

Peter Seiler's Goldfinger project reimagined Walkin' in the Sand as a relaxed reggae-tinged track, while Munich's Major Seven closed the voyage with Silverboat, a wistful soft rock ballad gliding between melancholy and light.

Across these hidden harbors of German and Austrian pop, the West Coast dream took on new forms—reflected in rivers, skies, and studio lights half a world away from L.A. Under and Above the Clouds celebrates that spirit: the enduring pull of smooth music, wherever it's made.

We'll Never Stop Living This Way: A Ghostly International Catalogue

Ghostly International has celebrated over 25 years as both a record label and art company, culminating in a unique marriage of sound and image. What does Ghostly sound like? “Genre-less” was a term thrown around in the early days, and that idea still holds true. Ghostly’s music — as with all of its artistic pursuits — straddles stylistic divisions, carving out space where sounds and ideas can cavort without inhibition or category.

This ethos comes to life in the first book dedicated to Ghostly, created with Hat & Beard Press. The immense volume delves into the label’s archives and history, featuring essays by critics Michaelangelo Matos and Philip Sherburne, alongside original interviews and oral histories with both musical and visual artists from across the roster.

Batu's Timedance imprint celebrates 10 years with a massive 3×12” compilation, stacked with heavyweight cuts from Skee Mask, Batu, Verraco, Pearson Sound & more.

Heralding 10 years of relentless club futurism, Timedance strikes forward once more with TD10. Batu's label has nurtured experimentation between techno propulsion, soundsystem pressure and innovative sound design since the beginning, rarely resting in one space and always reaching for new ideas. Across 23 forward-facing cuts, this compilation continues that tradition with a strong cast of scene-leading heavyweights and crucial emergent talent.

The wide-ranging styles across "TD10" are bound together by a shared affinity for bassweight presence and vibrant, three-dimensional production. Fractured, artful deconstruction from Daisy Moon, Marco Shuttle and Verraco sits alongside the snarling half-step pressure of re:ni and Lurka and the jagged drum intensity of Lechuga Zafiro, 33EMYBW, Ayesha, and Jabes. There's space for big room anti-anthems from Pearson Sound, Bambounou and Batu himself, wildcard swerves from Minor Science and Skee Mask and more emotive melodic sensibilities from Polygonia, El irreal Veintiuno and BADSISTA. At every turn, the ideas are fresh, toying with the idea of an all-encompassing sound for the label and throwing open the possibilities for what it might represent in the future.

Timedance has thrived in an era where technology has eroded the boundaries between the generic formulae of dance music's past, helping set the pace for innovation and presenting compelling, immediate music across the tempo range. TD10 responds to that legacy with its gaze fixed firmly forwards, ushering in the label's next chapter in proudly unpredictable style.

No Life 'Til Leather - A Tributes To Metallica's Kill 'Em All

Silver Lining Music is proud to present 'No Life ’Til Leather – A Tribute to Metallica’s Kill ’Em All': the most propulsive debut album in heavy metal history, re-imagined by the legends who inspired it and the generations that came in its wake!

Organised by diehard Metalli-fans, this track-by-track covers project proves how far the influence of San Francisco’s finest still runs. The veteran likes of Motörhead, Saxon and Diamond Head (three of Metallica’s favourite bands) are joined by such rising stars as Soen and Tailgunner to create a who’s-who of heavy music, with each performer lending their unique sound to one classic track.

'No Life ’Til Leather' represents a labour of love which kicked off when Diamond Head tracked their version of 'No Remorse' for a 2020 re-recording of their landmark debut, 'Lightning to the Nations'. With Motörhead’s Grammy Award-winning take on 'Whiplash' also in their vault, Silver Lining Music selected an array of metal talent to round out the tracklisting on a tribute effort for the ages. Contributions from thrash giants Testament, ex-Megadeth bassist David Ellefson and New Wave of British Heavy Metal linchpins Tygers of Pan Tang show the label looking beyond their own artists to amass the greatest lineup possible.

After Tailgunner’s 'Hit the Lights' opens and demonstrates how kick-ass the song remains in 2025, hard rockers The Almighty dish out a particularly confrontational 'The Four Horsemen': their first recorded work with their founding lineup since 1991. The galloping 'Motorbreath' has Soen shed their prog metal skin, whereas bass solo '(Anaesthesia) Pulling Teeth' is every bit as technical and emotional in Ellefson’s hands.

The album wraps with some of Metallica’s closest peers and greatest champions: Diamond Head have been both idols and a support act for the megastars, Testament (who intensify 'Seek & Destroy' even further) joined them in the trenches of the California metal scene, and Raven (closing with their thundering take on the anthemic 'Metal Militia') were part of their first-ever tour.

'No Life ’Til Leather' is an ambitious achievement worthy of Metallica’s game-changing legacy. By the fans and for the fans, it reaffirms the Four Horsemen’s ironclad legacy – and its stacked roster continues the band’s mission to shove metal up your ass.

DJ-Kicks: Eris Drew

The next instalment in the classic DJ-Kicks series is a selection of rapturous house, blissed-out breaks, and transcendent rave from the high priestess of the motherbeat herself, Chicago’s Eris Drew.

DJ, producer, musician, long-time resident at Chicago’s Smartbar, and co-creator of the T4T LUV NRG party and label, Eris Drew has been DJing since the early 90s, and has since taken her ecstatic house and high-energy, uncompromising mixing style to clubs, raves, and festivals worldwide.

Eris’ DJ-Kicks mix is 79 minutes of, as she puts it “the funky, emotional, ecstatic house-and-breaks backbone that defines my sound”, and includes tracks, remixes, and exclusives by Moby, Calisto, DJ Garth, Onionz, DJ Who, Kair, Hoof, and Toka Project, as well as from Eris herself and partner Octo Octa.

The result of countless hours of digging, her selection delves into the rattling breaks, rave stabs, and haunting strings of classic and lost ‘90s hybrid house-and-breaks jams, and matches them with more recent digs, the mix moving back and forth between emotive, bittersweet, and evocative, to raw, tough, and twisted with consummate ease.

Put together on two turntables and a mixer in her New Hampshire cabin studio, this is more than just a collection of hype tunes: “I recorded it in my cabin with the violent world rolling around me. Being in my refuge in the forest was important; the mix needed to carry the feeling of that place and the inspiration I draw from it. ”This is a mix that nails the Eris Drew sound and approach, where her perfectly pitched selections, seamless transitions, and high-energy cuts, scratches, and spinbacks are all employed in the service of a single aim: “I wanted the mix to feel like climbing a mountain - to produce an ecstatic sensation of overcoming.”

Eris first began mixing records together when she was 18 and hasn’t really stopped since, honing the skills that went into this mix for over three decades. As she says: “I’m an all-vinyl DJ with 30-plus years of mixing behind me, and I feel the mix reflects that.” Many of these records have been with Eris for years and have travelled the world with her. Some of them, you can hear their age, because she specifically asked the mastering engineer to preserve this in the reproduction. Raw and real: this is the sound of Eris Drew.

Chicago's premier boogie purveyors STAR CREATURE dig deep with 4 extremely rare cuts, 3 of them being white whale level impossible to find & the 4th commanding big bucks online! Includes songs by TIGER JACK, SOUL INVADERS, MOTHERFOX, and PYRAMID PLUS. Heavyweight vinyl and heavyweight reverse board jacket.

The A Side starts with an extremely rare, like 0 'Haves' on discogs.com rare from Tiger Jack. “Let’s Bounce” was originally issued on Ajana as one of their only 2 releases, the first being earlier from Central Power System on Numero Group’s "The Chicago Party" compilation. Tiger Jack remained elusive, both Jack and a copy of his record until SC stumbled upon a contact and were able to get in touch and stitch together the fully extended mix of this punk-funk boogie-bopper. Speaking of Numero Group, The 2nd track of Side 1 comes from an assist from the reissue gods themselves as they blessed us with this never-sold-on-discogs soulful side of boogie slap issued on one-and-done label Magikal. When asked about the track, songwriter CA Williams said they recorded it for a restaurant jingle. Probably the best one we’ve ever heard.

Side 2 starts off with an absolute modern soul monster with Motherfox’s hot shot. John Harris came by Star Creature’s Chicago HQ to chop it up and share some stories on Motherfox and his other passion project most deep funkers would known as Carver High. This record has reached insane demand the past few years as it’s a certified floor filler for all scenes - peak big budget sound packed into a small DIY package. Track 2 delivers the full version of the ever mysterious Pyramid Plus providing the titular tune “Comin’ At Ya’” as vocoded, talkboxed, low slung, spaced out boogie banger.

Limited copies, cop now or cry later! Star Creature reign supreme!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Star Creature's "Chicago Boogie" series continues to mine the rarest and most sought after boogie cuts. From private press specials to promo-only rarities; the series has dug deep through four volumes of absolutely essential excavations. Rivalled only by the infamous "Full Beam" compilations on Red Laser. Ch-ch-check!!

Minyo Groove 1963-1979 - Japan Meets Latin, Rock, Rare Groove & Funky Vibes (Selected By DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite)

Active as a professional DJ in Japan since the late eighties, DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite is also a renowned remixer, compiler and producer. An avid record collector and an expert of Wamono music, Yoshizawa has published in 2015 the now-classic Wamono A to Z records guide book, which instantly sold-out. The book unveiled a myriad of beautiful and rare records from a highly prolific, but still then unknown, Japanese groove scene. He has also selected a large part of the music in our highly acclaimed Wamono compilations.

For this brand new chapter in the series, Yoshizawa explores King Records' legendary catalog and unearths exceptional, rare and unknown musical gems. King Records has been releasing music since 1931 and is one of the most prestigious labels in Japan. Traditional Japanese music, known as "Minyo", are ancient songs once sung by fishermen, coal miners and sumo wrestlers. They are reimagined here with vibrant afro latin, rock, rare groove and funky arrangements in this killer selection of music released on King between 1963 and 1979. Also worth mentioning is the track Ohara Bushi by The Peanuts, which was released only on tape in 1970 and is now available for the first time ever on vinyl format.

Put the needle on the record, turn up the volume and dig right now into the Wamono sound - the cream of the Japanese funk, soul, rare groove and disco music developed throughout the years since the end of the fifties in Japan!

Safe In My Garden: American Pop In The Shadows 1967-1972

Peace and love in late 60s America did not come without parallel feelings of fear and confusion about the social situation – specifically about Vietnam. “Safe In My Garden” is the latest Ace compilation in an acclaimed series compiled by Bob Stanley – it’s a companion piece to the much-praised “State Of The Union (The American Dream In Crisis 1967 – 1973)”

The music on “Safe In My Garden” is harmony-laden, beautifully produced soft rock. Sunshine pop, even - a melodic, innovative style of American music that grew in the mid-60s out of the folk and surf scenes, exemplified by the Beach Boys and the Mamas and Papas. You will hear orchestral arrangements, and soft boy-girl vocals. But it wasn’t made in isolation from what was going on in the outside world. There are clouds and minor chords, plenty of melancholy in those harmonies.

“Safe In My Garden” includes songs of escape (Mark Eric’s ‘Move With The Dawn’, the Groop’s ‘A Famous Myth’), loss (the Eighth Day’s ‘How Can I Stop Loving You’, the New Colony Six’s ‘Prairie Grey’), dreamscapes (Tommy James and the Shondells’ ‘She’, Nancy Priddy’s ‘Christina’s World’), rebirth (Smokey and his Sister’s ‘Creators Of Rain’), a simpler world (the Free Design’s ‘My Brother Woody’) and a philosophically sounder future (Chad & Jeremy’s ‘The Ark’, Best of Friends’ ‘Summer Sound’).

It contains some surprisingly dark messages paired with beautiful melodies, as well as songs of hope. Thousands of young musicians in cities, suburbs and small towns across the States from the mid to late 60s spent their mornings hiding from the mailman, dreading the draft. This is the Sound of Young America in the late 60s, keeping its fingers crossed.

The third and final volume of Classic’s 30th Anniversary vinyl series brings the party full circle - blending deep catalogue cuts, future-forward house, and tracks from the label’s tight-knit family of collaborators.

Like the volumes before it, this 2x12” release arrives in a raw reverse board outer sleeve, a nod to the aesthetic of Classic’s earliest releases. Inside, bold yellow and red GMUND card stock inner sleeves with embossed detailing reflect the label’s long-standing commitment to design, artistry, and collectability.

Record One kicks off with a certified Classic family affair. Home & Garden’s ‘Sexuality...He's 2 Young’ features the unmistakable voice of DJ Colette, a staple of Classic’s early era. Included here is JT Donaldson’s Porno Beat Down Remix—a stripped, low-slung rework with an irresistibly funky bass line and pure dance floor chemistry.

Brett Johnson’s ‘Jiffy Pop’, from his legendary Bounce! EP, follows up with a jittery, swaggering groove that epitomises Brett’s playful, funk-laced production style. Infectious, weird, and entirely unforgettable.

On the flip, Tiefschwarz’s ‘Acid Soul’ delivers a moody, muscular roller. Originally released during their prolific run on Classic in the early 2000s, it fuses baritone sax stabs, a Berlin-borne bass line, and a sultry vocal into a deeply spiritual house cut.

Roy Davis Jr. closes Side B with the propulsive ‘About Love’ (Solid Groove Remix)—a tough and driving interpretation by Dave Taylor that’s long been a DJ favourite in the Classic vaults.

Record Two showcases Classic’s more recent sonic evolutions. JT Donaldson’s return to the label in 2019 came with ‘Stay Inside’, a rich and breezy groove featuring the soulful voice of Liv.e. It’s an elegant and understated slice of modern house with timeless appeal.

Then comes Dam Swindle’s funk-charged ‘Hey Mister’. A punchy, bass-driven jam built around a 70s reggae-disco vocal sample. Raw and infectious, it’s been lighting up dance floors worldwide since its release.

Luke Solomon’s catalogue on Classic is vast, but ‘Come on Over’, his collaboration with Amp Fiddler, earns its place here. Seeing vinyl release for the first time, this cut overflows with musicality. Amp’s passionate vocal, free-time breakdowns, and deep funk grooves deliver pure emotional punch.

And to close, a modern masterpiece: Honey Dijon’s ‘Work’ (Extended Mix), taken from her ‘Black Girl Magic’ LP. Featuring Dave Giles II, Cor.Ece, and Mike Dunn, this powerhouse track brings together fierce vocal performances, live instrumentation, and top-tier production. It embodies everything Classic stands for: collaboration and innovation on the dance floor.

Let Me Down Easy: Echoes From Cheri Records

This is the story of how a tiny label from New Jersey changed the course of music history not once but twice.

Cheri Records was established in 1974 in New Jersey and run by one Boo Frazier. Cheri's output was limited, producing a catalogue of just eleven releases between the years 1974 and 1982. On the face of it, this appears to be insubstantial output. However, if you dig a little deeper, the quality released on Cheri Records reveals an exceptional legacy of groundbreaking music.

A dark horse in the world of record labels, a true unsung legend that would go on to alter the course of musical history and intersect with a remarkable array of talented artists, bands and DJs. From Rare Pleasure; Sandy Barber; Julius Brockington; Boo Frazier; Patrick Adams; Tom Moulton; Larry Levan and MF Doom: Cheri Records has directly impacted their artistry in significant ways. Cheri's influence even extends into the present, with DJ icons like David Morales, Dave Lee, Danny Krivit, and Colin Curtis continuing to champion its contributions.

This compilation brings together the most compelling tracks from the Cheri Records catalogue, shedding light on the label's extraordinary story and underscoring the idea that music, no matter how unassuming its origins, can transcend boundaries and reshape, influence and inform music to come for future generations.

This collection also represents the start of a new series here on Miles Away, a series that will delve into the labels and studios that were responsible for leaving a lasting imprint on the musical world. We've named this seriesEchoes From, and this compilation will be the first of many.

The vinyl package comes in a gatefold sleeve with in-depth liner notes and features interviews with Colin Curtis and David Morales. Also available on CD and digitally.

Imaginational Anthem Vol. XIV : Ireland

Ireland has had its fair share of international breakout successes recently, including Tompkins Square’s own discovery, Muireann Bradley. Perhaps less known is that Ireland is a wellspring of amazing solo acoustic guitar talent. Guitarist Cian Nugent recruited some of the leading lights of Irish guitar to create 'Imaginational Anthem vol. XIV : Ireland'. The release coincides with Tompkins Square's 20th Anniversary. The label launched October 25th, 2005 with the release of the first volume of its acclaimed guitar compilation series, 'Imaginational Anthem.’ The first four volumes of the guitar series featured early recordings by crucial figures such as James Blackshaw, Daniel Bachman, Nathan Salsburg and Jack Rose while re-discovering earlier masters like Suni McGrath, Michael Chapman, Max Ochs, Fred Gerlach, Steve Mann, and many more. Subsequent volumes were handed over for curation : Sam Moss Vol. 5 ; Chris King Vol. 6 ; Hayden Pedigo Vol. 7 ; Michael Klausman & Brooks Rice Vol. 8 ; Ryley Walker Vol. 9, Marcus Fruit Vol. 10 ; Luke Schneider Vol. 11 ; Henry Parker Vol. 12, James Toth Vol. 13, and Cian Nugent Vol. 14. In a full circle moment, a teenage Cian Nugent appeared on the cover of ‘Imaginational Anthem vol. 3’, and contributed one of his first solo compositions on that album. His liner notes for IAXIV illuminate the new project, highlighting each artist, and (rather humorously) framing the acoustic guitar in Irish music history.

“There’s a scene in Steve Coogan’s 1997 sitcom I’m Alan Partridge where the central character Alan starts talking to some Irish TV producers about Ireland and its varied poor representations (badly tarmacked driveways, people with eyebrows on their cheeks, and horses running through council estates) and suggests that perhaps a tagline for a new Irish era should be ‘There’s more to Ireland than this’. And while I didn’t quite have the facetious gall to call this album just that, the temptation did make me chuckle. Perhaps the intention of putting this collection together was to show a different side of Irish guitar. The guitar has often played a questionable role in Irish music. Its tendency towards bashing and harmonising has many times raised eyebrows at traditional sessions, and the good lord knows the dread that befalls faces when a guitar is produced unprovoked at a party. Passing a Dublin tourist trap pub, the sound of a plastic piezo strum can elicit horror in the passerby. But the guitar can also be a tool for dreaming and mystery. It can soothe a sleepless night or transport us in memory. This compilation includes guitar that does just these things by some of Ireland’s most imaginative guitarists. Some brief introductions: David Murphy is a pedal steel player from Cork who has recently been arranging Irish tunes for the steel in a way that is perfectly familiar yet unusual. The March of The King Of Laois is an old pipers’ tune from the 16th century, which David has worked his magic on arranging for the steel. Brendan Jenkinson is a guitarist and producer from Meath who I’ve known for a long time. I’ve often urged him to record some of his solo music, and he has finally given in and done just that, resenting his original Paris Blues. I am excited to see what comes next. Junior Brother AKA Ronan Kealy is a guitarist and songwriter from Kerry known for his powerful lyricism and singing, whose playing I’ve admired since I first heard it many years ago. He takes on the traditional tune The Lark In The Morning in a way I’ve never heard before, infusing it with joy. Caoimhe Hopkinson is a Irish-Okinawan guitarist from Mayo who grew up playing traditional music. She has become an in demand guitarist and bassist and her solo guitar playing has a unique and lyrical way of approaching traditional tunes fingerstyle such as Jamieson’s Favourite. Damian O’Neill is a guitarist from Derry who is probably best known for playing with the bands The Undertones and That Petrol Emotion. More recently he has been crafting reflective delicate instrumentals, which draw on traditional music and blend it with a contemporary sensibility, such as his original Inside Out. My own selection is a traditional Irish tune called I Am Asleep And Don’t Waken Me that I learned from the harp arrangement, which I’ve seen credited to both Turlough O’Carolan and Edward Bunting. Those who know me may notice the title’s aptness to my own wont to slumber. It seemed remiss to compile a record of Irish guitar music without mention of Arty McGlynn, the Tyrone guitarist who reimagined what was possible for the guitar in Irish music, exploring the instrument as a melodic vehicle rather than simply an accompaniment. Tyrone musicians Jerome McGlynn (son of Arty) and Mark McKowski (known as half of The Lost Brothers) render a beautiful take on Arty’s arrangement of the traditional tune The Blackbird. NC Lawlor is a guitarist originally from the north of England who has called Dublin home for a long time, and is known for providing beautiful live soundtracks to the city’s streets for many years. I’ve long been a fan of his playing and was excited to include his original Laurie Rose. Aonghus McEvoy is a guitarist and improviser from Dublin who I’ve known since we were teenagers. He grew up playing in punk bands and in more recent years has taken to exploring solo acoustic playing. His arrangement of Jimmy Guiffre’s Cry, Want is processed into a drastically different context, giving space for him to roam the melody and ruminate over the form. Sean Carpio is an Irish Peruvian musician from Dublin who is usually known as a jazz drummer but never ceases to confound and surprise people by the many strings to his bow. He has a solo guitar practice that he has been developing almost in secret for many years and I was pleased to bully him into recording some of it for this record. His piece Labour of Love is an original written while watching the James Graham play of the same title on television. In Sean’s own words, “although not connected directly to the meaning of the play, it was still about the dedication it takes to make a change, even often beyond your lifetime”. So hopefully beyond the rising rents, tourist traps and badly tarmacked driveways this collection shows there is more to Ireland than this.” Cian Nugent Dublin, 2025

System Olympia - Love Language: A Collection Of Erotica Electronica

System Olympia presents a bold, cinematic compilation that redefines the sound of sensuality. Love Language is an 18-track double-vinyl release pressed on both heavyweight velvet red and white linen colour vinyl, also a deluxe heavyweight black vinyl. The CD and full-length digital package expand the experience to 20 tracks, that comes mixed & unmixed. It’s accompanied by a provocative, limited-edition 24-page fanzine, exclusive to 18+ audiences.

This is not just a compilation, Love Language is a manifesto. A carefully curated sonic journey through eroticism, artistic rebellion, and liberation, it spans nearly five decades of music and features exclusive edits and rare gems that illuminate System Olympia’s radical aesthetic vision.

Various Artists – curated by System Olympia "Love Language"
Since her emergence on the electronic underground, System Olympia has carved out a distinct, sensual sonic universe, equal parts vulnerable and defiant. With Love Language, she presents her most audacious project to date: a compilation rooted in what she calls The Aesthetics of Sexual Desire in Sound.

It’s a daring declaration that desire is more than a feeling - it’s a language. Across 20 tracks, including her own sultry opener “The Heat Of The Night (feat. REINEN)” and a rare System Olympia edit of Working Men’s Club’s “Ploys”, this compilation speaks in rhythms and textures that evoke longing, intimacy, and ecstatic release.

This is not a traditional compilation. System Olympia’s sequencing is cinematic and deliberate. Every track a scene in a film that exists only in the listener’s imagination. From the retro-futurist seduction of Flavia Fortunato’s Italo gem “Se Tu Vuoi” to the deep, extended tension of Musclecars’ “Running Out of Time,” each piece plays its part in an arc of anticipation, climax, and reflection.

Uniting artists as diverse as Daniele Baldelli, Piero Umiliani, and DJ Rocca, Love Language refuses boundaries of genre, era, or expectation. It dances between vintage Italo-disco, dreamy electronica, sweaty club tracks, and avant-garde jazz, forming a rich tapestry of sound and sensation.

System Olympia explains, “This is music for lovers, outsiders, and dreamers. It's a rebellion made of velvet and basslines.”

The accompanying 24-page fanzine insert, restricted to adults, further deepens the narrative, with erotic visual fragments and poetic texts that amplify the compilation’s raw, sensual energy. A tangible extension of the music’s spirit, the zine invites listeners to step into Olympia’s world and engage their senses fully.

As much a provocation as it is a celebration, Love Language is a deeply personal curation and a radical act of creative freedom. It champions eroticism as art, desire as dialogue, and music as a liberatory force.

Techno Kayō Volume One - Japanese Techno Pop 1981 - 1989 (Compiled By Dubby & Antal)

Compiled by Dubby & Antal, "Techno Kayō Volume One" is a dancefloor-friendly selection focusing on Japanese proto-techno, electro-pop, and synthpop from the 1980s. Pressed at 45RPM. Comes with OBI and insert with liner notes.

Note: This release is only available on physical format (vinyl & CD) / no downloads will be available.

In late-1970s Japan, a new and unique genre called techno kayō emerged, blending catchy pop melodies with the futuristic sounds of synthesizers and drum machines. Rooted in the older kayōkyoku style, it was influenced by European electronic acts like Kraftwerk, but had a distinctly Japanese flair. Artists such as Yellow Magic Orchestra pioneered this retro-futuristic sound, creating music that felt both nostalgic and ahead of its time.

Dubby, owner of the legendary record shop Ondas in Tokyo, was one of the first to make Japanese music available to the outside world. He has teamed up with Antal, co-founder of the Amsterdam-based, Rush Hour Records, to release the first in a series of compilations.

fabric, the iconic hub of electronic music culture, proudly announces its latest addition to the fabric mix series: "FABRICLIVE. presents Pola & Bryson". This mix will be a dynamic exploration of contemporary drum & bass, fluid in genre, rich in emotion, and sharp in sound design. It navigates the space between soulful reflection and controlled chaos, painting a vivid picture of contrast and transformation. Showcasing a unique blend of melancholy, emotion, and euphoria that elegantly yet purposefully harnesses the immense power of electronic music, UK-based duo Pola & Bryson have solidified themselves as one of the most talented production duos flying the flag for the genre today. Throughout the mix, you’ll hear liquid textures layered with depth and warmth, tracks that breathe with shimmering pads, smooth rolling drums and emotionally resonant melodies. These moments evoke late night introspection and spacious clarity, tapping into the more human, melodic side of drum & bass. But the mix doesn’t stay in one mood for long. It periodically plunges into darker, more technical territory, where the basslines twist, the rhythms fracture and tighten and the atmosphere becomes tense and futuristic. Here, the emotional gives way to the mechanical, driving energy through razor-sharp precision and relentless force. Experimental soundscapes weave throughout, blurring genre lines and adding moments of unpredictability. At times ambient and abstract, other times intensely rhythmic, the mix balances structure with freedom, always pushing forward without losing emotional weight. For 25 years, fabric has stood as a cornerstone of the UK’s drum and bass movement, a place where the genre has not only thrived but evolved. More than just a club, fabric has been a vital incubator for underground sounds, consistently championing drum and bass alongside a wide spectrum of electronic music. From early pioneers to cutting-edge innovators, its legendary room two has become hallowed ground for DJs and ravers alike. As a bastion of innovation and inclusion, fabric has shaped the soundscape of UK nightlife, influencing global trends while staying fiercely true to its roots. In addition to the mix album, fabric and Pola & Bryson unveil the brand new original single "Worlds Apart" an emotional vocal lead anthem featuring the incredible vocals of Emily Makis. The track balances Emily’s heartfelt lyricism with Pola & Bryson’s signature crisp liquid drums and deep and intoxicating basslines. The 2 acts first combined on the track "Complete" alongside Monrroe and followed it up with the certified hit, "Phoneline", dubbed by Radio 1 as the D&B Anthem of 2023. With a history of making pure magic happen when they join together in the studio, "Worlds Apart" certainly delivers on those high expectations.

El Bailador De La Esquina

During the golden age of vinyl—from the 1960s through the 1980s—Colombia produced an astonishing number of 45 rpm records—many of them not tied to full albums, that continue to surprise collectors and music lovers today.

This abundance can be attributed to many factors: affordability, jukebox demand, radio promotion, or simply the joy of sharing a small musical token with a loved one. Whatever the reason, these little records traveled far and wide, sometimes ending up in distant countries —especially Mexico—, carried by DJs, collectors, or pirate radio waves. They became cultural passports, spreading salsa, cumbia, son montuno, and more.

This curated collection highlights hard-to-find salsa 45s from the Discos Fuentes vaults—deep cuts that have long flown under the radar but still light up dance floors today. These tracks, once pressed in small numbers, feature top tier musicianship, fiery brass, unforgettable grooves, and lyrical gems that reflect the rich diversity of Colombia’s musical landscape.

Among the featured artists are: Super Combo “Los Famosos” with their irresistible barrio anthem ‘El Bailador de la esquina’, capturing the spirit of Cali’s street life, Sexteto Manaure, delivering a poignant son that blends regional pride with poetic nostalgia, La Protesta de Colombia, a revolutionary Barranquilla outfit that gave a young Joe Arroyo his early spotlight and channeled the rebellious pulse of the times.

This compilation also includes a range of studio experiments and covers—where artists like Piper Pimienta, Galileo y Su Banda, and La Integración reimagined beloved hits, from boleros to vallenatos, through a distinctly Colombian salsa lens.

Every track tells a story—of artistic ambition, social change, regional identity, or simple joy. Some were attempts at hits, others personal expressions or studio curiosities. What they share is an authenticity that continues to resonate.

These obscure gems, long scattered across dusty crates and forgotten jukeboxes, now find new life. They speak not just to the past, but to a timeless rhythm that still moves dancers and dreamers alike.

Tough Love 20: Don’t Do Anything Important With Anybody Else

After so long it becomes harder to say new things about older things you now just do. Some things you’ve become. Some things you simply (never simply) are. The thing becomes a slippery notion. The self slides along with it. After this long, the story is whatever are the songs.

Here are 11 new ones, from the current constellation, and a future still to come. The cement is still wet on that one.

From the forest near where I now live you can hear a chorus of different birds in voice at once, competing but each defined, in defence of a territory or to attract a mate. There’s an app that tells you so. I wonder, too, what that app doesn’t reveal, if their nature need not share those same purposes. This is simply (never simply) how it exists. If we can’t speak to the mysteries of these strategies, they at least persist, regardless of who picks up the frequency. Singing to itself, and there will always be these kinds of songs.

Self-portrait at two decades.

Soul Jazz Records Presents 'Soul Jamaica'

Soul Jazz Records’ new ‘SOUL JAMAICA’ brings together a wicked selection of reggae funk and soul tracks from the legendary Studio One stable, featuring a stellar line-up of artists including Jackie Mittoo, The Heptones, The Gladiators, Sim Smith, Peter Tosh and The Wailers, Cedric ‘Im’ Brooks and many more.

For a short period of time at the end of the 1960s and early 1970s, nestled between the end of rocksteady and the arrival of roots reggae, Studio One released a small stream of superb soul and funk reggae tunes - covering everyone from Sly and The Family Stone, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Nina Simone, Gene Chandler, Tyrone Davis and more.

Most of the tracks featured on ‘SOUL JAMAICA’ were only ever released on Studio One’s UK subsidiary label Bamboo in small-run pressings and are now consequently extremely hard to find.

The cover photograph features images of Air Jamaica, the new airline created by the Jamaican government at the end of the 1960s, showing how, in the years following independence, the country assumed its place on the world stage, with reggae music playing a key role in creating the island’s new cultural identity.

IF Music Presents You Need This!: 'World Jazz Grooves Volume 2' Compiled By Jean-Claude & Victor Kiswell

The collaboration between BBE Music and If Music continues with another excellent compilation in the ongoing If Music Presents series with this 2nd volume in the World Jazz Grooves chapter. Alongside the A Journey Into Deep Jazz albums in the catalogue, World Jazz Grooves Volume 2 explores the global diversity of Jazz in its many forms, as interpreted throughout the globe, with tracks from Denmark, France, Brazil, Canada, the USA and Jamaica. The tracklist includes Rosa Mae from Mary Lou Williams, one of the artists in the legendary A Great Day in Harlem photograph and Dakar, a 16 minute opus of a track by Dadje. With the music sought, sorted and selected by legendary diggers and selectors Jean-Claude and Victor Kiswell World Jazz Volume 2 is also the opportunity to own music that has been painstakingly searched for in flea markets, second hand shops and private collections and would not be available otherwise. Jean-Claude’s excellent track record of creating and curating compilation albums and rediscovering rare gems and private presses for re-issue follows a philosophy of cross- genre music appreciation. He has been a mainstay of London’s Black Music scene for some four decades with his record shop, his shows on NTS and Soho Radio, his excellent ‘In Conversation with...’ series of chat shows, his Djing and curation of event stages at We Out Here and Cross the Tracks and, of course, his excellent compilations. Paris based Victor Kiswell is also a somewhat of a savant in the world of vinyl hunting and discernment with parallel careers as a journalist writing for vinyl bazaar, art director for Radioooo.com, DJ and broadcaster on various stations throughout Europe. Victor's travels around the world, on his vinyl quests, are well documented in his articles in Vinyl Bazaar and he describes himself as an 'adventurer', an 'archaeologist' and someone who enjoys the element of his vinyl hunting where he finds himself going where chance takes him. Yes, with these two music heads and vinyl hunting experts unearthing the seven absolute gems on this double vinyl offering, If Music presents: World Jazz Grooves Volume 2 really is something you need in your life and in your vinyl rack.

You're No Big Deal - Grunge, The US Underground And Beyond 1984-1994

4CD SET EXPLORING GRUNGE AND THE AMERICAN ALTERNATIVE UNDERGROUND 1984-1994.

• COMPILED WITH MUDHONEY’S MARK ARM.

During the late 1980s, whilst pop, rap and glam metal dominated the American airwaves, underground musicians sought an antidote. During the middle of the decade, from Seattle in the west to New York in the east, bands immersed in a less highly polished, raw and more powerful sound began to emerge, fusing punky garage band attitude with meaningful, often disenchanted lyrics and lashings of distortion to create something new. The “grunge” tag quickly took hold, absorbing bands from all over the States and becoming a social phenomenon, drawing countless other underground and college circuit bands into its orbit in the process. Overnight, macho rock was dead.

Featuring an embarrassment of key bands and classic tracks, alongside lesser-known nuggets and a hand-picked selection of Australasian artists who were inadvertently feeding into the scene, ‘You’re No Big Deal’ explores a vital period in post-punk American musical history, the rebirth of rock music and its new place among the underground elite. With sleevenotes from Mudhoney’s Mark Arm, whose previous band Green River were the first to be given the “grunge” tag, this is an on-the-ground, broad reaching dive into a time and place that saw the unlikeliest of anti-rock stars recalibrate what American guitar-based music could be, reconnecting it with ordinary suburban kids and reigniting punk rock’s spirit.

Packed with over 80 tracks spanning a decade, and presented in roughly chronological order, ‘You’re No Big Deal’ tells a story that spread far beyond the ambitions of its key players.

Jon Savage's 1986-1990 Rollin' Under The Melody

As we’ve come to expect from Ace’s much-admired series of Jon Savage-curated two-CD collections, this new – and sadly final – volume is a multi-genre delight, taking the listener from house to baggy via post-punk, proto-grunge, minimalist avant-garde, the advent of sampling and more.

Among the many highlights are ‘Mystery Of Love’ by Mr Fingers, a track that turned Savage’s head during a trip to New York in early 1986; Hüsker Dü’s ‘Could You Be The One?’ from 1987, a perfect example of their melodic abilities; the action-packed ‘It Takes Two’ by Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, which could be heard blasting out of boomboxes all over New York in spring 1988; Paul Oakenfold’s 1989 remix of Happy Mondays’ ‘Wrote For Luck’ into the early baggy classic ‘W.F.L.’; and the Holographic Goatee Mix of ‘What Is Love?’, the overlooked flip of Dee-Lite’s international hit ‘Groove Is In The Heart’ of 1990.

The compilation – and the series – ends with a contrast: David Morales’ seven-minute hardcore trance reconstruction of the Pet Shop Boys’ ‘So Hard’ followed by the reflective, sinuous guitar chime of the High’s ‘Take My Time’. They represent the twin poles of Jon Savage’s musical choices at a time when dance culture was still expanding exponentially and rock music had rediscovered its swagger and joie-de-vivre. Ten years in the making, the series began with a set devoted to 1965 and ends with 1990, two great periods for music.

Jazz Dispensary Presents: Dream A Dream With Studio G: Cratedigger's Archive (1970-2009)

Since the 1940s, Library Music has lurked in the shadows, peripherally touching our lives through TV and film. Among the stalwarts of the industry was UK's Studio G, with cues heard on Doctor Who, and sampled by the likes of The Chemical Brothers, and Tyler, the Creator. Jazz Dispensary's Dream a Dream with Studio G: Cratedigger's Archive (1970–2009) culls some of their most sought-after cuts, with liner note commentary from Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley, and illustrations by Ivan Minsloff.

Detroit musical institution Submerge is set to release a new musical compilation entitled, "Submerge Sessions Vol. 1," on their established self-titled label.

"Submerge Sessions Vol. 1" is inspired by the music production studio’s periodic listening sessions- a brain child of UR member Cornelius Harris aka Atlantis. These listening sessions attract talent from all over the map, emulating Motown’s cut-throat talent sessions.

Submerge has been many things, but it has always been the grounds that hold an epicenter of record distribution, production studios, memories, people, and possibility. Wherever Submerge is physically, the concept applies.

Submerge is unmatched in its success ratio for presenting the future of electronic music via this unique fallout called Detroit. While other Detroit labels travel the world to seek new talent elsewhere, Submerge looks to the urban reality of the city for inspiration, and the odd travelers that land here.

This project is dedicated not only to presenting new talent, but also maintaining the spirit that the people of Submerge are nurtured within.

About Submerge:
Submerge is a world-renowned musical institution based in Detroit, Michigan, founded by “Mad” Mike Banks in 1992. Specializing in all forms of Black music, but especially techno, Submerge has been the home to Exhibit 3000, The Somewhere In Detroit (S.I.D.) Record Store, Underground Resistance, and several other notable collectives, businesses, projects, and experiments in Detroit’s Techno history and present.

As a wholesale distributor and administrative hub Submerge has shipped musical products throughout the globe including the Americas, Europe, The Far East, Africa, Asia, Australia and Antarctica; The current line up of Submerge labels includes: SWEAT, Red Planet, Dirt Tech, Yaxteq, Underground Resistance and many others.

As a cultural hub, Submerge continues to invest in the futurity of techno and its offshoots with music production studios, mentorship programs, music listening sessions, collaborative community events, archival resources, and more.

Soul Jazz Records Presents 'Latin Fire!"

Soul Jazz Records delve into the vast vaults of Discos Fuentes, one of the oldest and largest record companies in Latin America, known as ‘the Motown of Colombia’. Discos Fuentes played a major role in spreading Afro-Latin sounds both to Colombia and around the world and this album explores that legacy.

‘LATIN FIRE! Cumbia–Salsa–Afro-Funk: Tropical Dance Music from Discos Fuentes, Colombia 1956-83’ features legendary Colombian artists such as Fruko, The Latin Brothers, Michi Sarmiento, Afrosound, Pedro Laza, Wganda Kenya and more, and showcases the wide-ranging variety of styles that Discos Fuentes made unique to their sound.

The album features music from the golden era of Fuentes; from late 1950s and 1960s Cumbia through to the emergence of heavyweight and hardcore salsa and Afro-funk in the 1970s and up to the early 1980s.

Discos Fuentes pioneered the sound of ‘Tropical’ music - Afro-Colombian dance music that originated in the north coast of Colombia bringing it to a new worldwide audience. This album shows how Colombian music was also influenced by New York barrio-style hard Latin and salsa and Caribbean styles such as soka and zouk, to create a truly unique dance music sound.

Back in stock Cover of Ein Null - 10 Years Of Sprechen by Various Artists.
10 years ago in 2015, The Golden Lion in Todmorden opened its doors under the guidance of Gig & Waka, Cloudwater brewed their first ever beers, the dance floors of Manchester got introduced to the world of Supernature Disco and from his spare room at home in Bolton Chris Massey started Sprechen.

What followed over the next decade has been a wild ride of amazing people, memorable (though fuzzy!) parties, creativity, art, expression, performance and at the centre of it all of course, the music.
Sprechen has never been one style or sound. A reflection of varied musical tastes without any limitations of style or genres, just a passion to share good music.
Over the last decade, Sprechen has been lucky enough to both work with and meet many like-minded cosmic creatives that share this mindset and that have all played a major role in the story.

Ein Null is a collection of original tracks from some of Sprechen's nearest & dearest who, for the last 10 years, have helped shaped the label via releases, remixes or performing at events.
It's wonky & weird, banging & beautiful, cosmic & consciousness-expanding and it continues to connect the invisible dots of club music and more abstract listening experiences.

From basements & beyond to sunsets & psychedelic socials...we are pleased to present this electronically charged selection of soundscapes courtesy of like-minded musical humans including; The Utopia Strong, A Certain Ratio, Lena C., Gina Breeze, Low Pulse, Psychederek, Lindstrøm, Supernature Disco, PBR Streetgang and of course Chris Massey.

Limited to a run of 300 vinyl with double-sided screen-printed sleeve.

The term "private" is used quite liberally in the promotion of rare groove compilations these days. The team at Tramp Records tends to be rather defensive when it comes to such terms. Although, and this should not be misunderstood as arrogance, label boss Tobias Kirmayer & his crew have been doing nothing else for 22 years, strictly speaking. Every compilation series from the Upper Bavarian label, be it the "Movements," "Feeling Nice," "Praise Poems," or "Can You Feel It" series, specializes in independently produced music from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s released on small private labels. This means extremely time-consuming work to track down the musicians, write down their stories, and, last but not least, invest a high four-digit amount to release such compilation projects as deluxe (double) LPs and CDs.

The industrious creators of the label have already released seven volumes in the Peace Chant series. Parts 1 to 6 were single LPs with predominantly American tracks. Part 7 was the first to be dedicated to purely German productions. Furthermore, the decision was made to release a double LP with a gatefold cover, not least to accommodate the extremely comprehensive accompanying text and images.

The 8th edition once again focuses on German productions. It includes rare (Fences), unreleased (Music Community), but also the odd €10 record. The mere fact that a record is rare/expensive doesn't make it interesting for Tobias Kirmayer and his team. They are primarily interested in the music. And if a song convinces them, it makes it onto the shortlist. In fact, many established reissue labels too often ignore records or individual songs and don't re-release them simply because they are not sought after by collectors. Kirmayer and his fellow campaigners have made it their mission to combat this injustice. A good example of this would be Sabanone, a title by Büdi Siebert's formation with the wonderful name HerrGottSax. The original LP costs around €15.
