So Soft So Sweet

Philly based Universal Cave flip a pair of arcane tunes into party time dancefloor anthems. Starting off with the uptempo stomper "So Soft So Sweet", the big sing-along hook, searing synth solo, and reinforced drums make this a perfect secret weapon for your next disco set. On the flip, "Mishugina Mambo" offers up a heavy duty Latin rhythm workout. Inspired by the classic Sofrito Specials series, the hypnotic guitar and roaring horns soar over driving percussion and pulsing drums that dare everyone in the room to remain still. Universal Cave are known for their namesake record label and have also released edits and remixes on Emotional Rescue, Pleasure Of Love, and now Studs. Tasty 7" that comes highly recommended by us all here at Picc HQ.

King Sporty is something of a chameleonic artists, not that many people know. He started out int he 70s making reggae and soul 7"s, then moved into disco, boogie, hip-hop and electro 12"s during the 80s, and then when house music hit in the 90s he evolved once more. This new drop from Emotional Rescue takes a tune from that late era. 'Computer Music' is four to the floor with electro influences and a lazy break that pull you in deep. Far-sighted chords bring a serene sense of cosmic majesty while a filtered vocal adds space age vibes. A dub is included as well as the Universal Cave Discomix by the Philadelphia DJ and production crew. A retro-future EP indeed

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: King Sporty did an amazing job of traversing disco, hip-hop, house, electro and cosmic camps. "Computer Age" definitely lands in the electro category, but retains all the soul and human touches that would become familiar with this pivotal producer.

"Invisible Starlight" is a ripping tune by an unknown midwestern funk outfit with a driving backbeat and soaring horns. It sounds like Ohio to us, but we can't be sure. What is certain however, is that these gents rocked the local bowling alleys, social clubs and loungespots wherever they went. Label bosses Universal Cave touch down on the A-side with their primo 45 edit, hitting us with a relentless groove of fat bass, bright horns and irrepressible rhythm guitar - so damned phonky y'all. Meanwhile on the flip, The Beat Broker rounds out the original with his signature style and an impeccable ear. The Kind Dub's sun drenched delay and reinforced drums ensure that Invisible Starlight will shine over any dancefloor!

STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Here we have a hot 7" of the rawest, roughest disco funk, expertly retweeked for modern jocks. There's looped licks on the A-side from the UC crew, while Beat Broker gets dubby-in-the-disco over on the flip...
