    The Style Council

Long Hot Summers: The Story Of The Style Council

When Paul Weller announced The Style Council’s arrival in March 1983, he’d come a very long way.

In fact, at the age of just 24, he was already a musical veteran with six albums and nine Top 10 singles under his belt with The Jam. As their leader he had become a deity-like figure and for his fans, The Jam’s split was unimaginable. But creatively restless and of inquisitive mind, Paul jettisoned them at their height to form a collective with an eventual core line-up of Paul with Mick Talbot, Dee C Lee and Steve White. In a quest for new sounds, the group travelled to realms previously unchartered for a pop group incorporating musical influences as wide ranging as Blue Note jazz and Chicago soul, Claude Debussy and Erik Satie, Chicago House and Jacques Brel.At the same time, as battle lines were drawn in a decade under Margaret Thatcher culminating in the miner’s strike of 1984-85, Paul’s lyrics spoke with the language of the activist and his state of the nation addresses were both fierce and eloquent. Over four albums and 17 singles, The Style Council made a stand and became the standard bearers of progressive soulful pop and social comment.

The Style Council was emblematic of its creator. Paul Weller, smart, fearless, audacious, with a social conscience and totally unafraid to push the possibilities of pop.

      This is their story…

        Elliott Smith

Elliott Smith - Expanded 25th Anniversary Edition

The impact of Elliott Smith ’s music holds no bounds. He has been championed, covered, and sampled by artists from Billie Eilish to Pearl Jam to Frank Ocean and his distinct, solemn sound reverberates in the work of the National, Phoebe Bridgers and Bon Iver. To commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Elliott Smith’s self-titled second solo album, Kill Rock Stars/UMGI is set to release the Elliott Smith: Expanded 25th Anniversary Edition on the 28th August, 2020.

The package includes a revelatory new remastering of the original Elliott Smith record and a bonus disc of the earliest known recording of Smith performing as a solo act, from September 17, 1994 at Portland’s café and “art salon” Umbra Penumbra. The albums come encased within a 52-page coffee table book with handwritten lyrics, reminiscences from Smith’s friends and colleagues about his life at the time he was writing and recording this album, and two dozen previously unseen photographs from the era by JJ Gonson, who shot the image on the album’s cover (the original photo that became the cover is also seen here for the first time).

When Elliott Smith was released in July 1995, it was so dramatically out-of-step with the later stages of grunge—and with the indie rock and Riot Grrl sounds associated with the Kill Rock Stars label—that it was completely ignored by the press but championed by artists from the Beastie Boys to Fugazi. “I’ve always felt like this record is underappreciated,” says Kill Rock Stars founder Slim Moon. “A lot of people overlook Elliott’s first two records—they think of them as a prelude to the bigger albums that followed—but when you go back, you discover they’re really great. This is Elliott’s most fragile and delicate music, and we wanted to honor that with a special and beautiful package.”

For this release, producer/engineer Larry Crane, the official archivist for the Smith family, dug through files, reels, cassettes, and DAT tapes to find the closest sources to the original Elliott Smith first-generation mix downs and spent days to carefully transfer and clean up the audio from the Umbra Penumbra high-quality cassette provided by Casey Crynes. “There are fan-traded MP3s out there of this show, but when people hear what I was able to extract from this original tape, they’ll be shocked,” says Crane.

The Umbra Penumbra show gives a sense of the contrast between Smith’s live and studio approaches. “He was goofier on stage, making jokes and messing with his own words,” says Gonson. “He worked the words very carefully—he was very admiring of Joni Mitchell and how she wrote. So it was fun, you’d hear a song and then it would change.” What emerged from this challenging creative evolution was a set of songs with the intimacy and intensity of an acoustic-based singer-songwriter and the gut-punch power of a rocker.

Smith’s joy and connection to the creative community in Portland, his home at the time, is beautifully documented by the photos and reminiscences in this new package. A few years after Elliott Smith was released, the singer himself looked back on the album that in many ways laid the groundwork for his image and his triumphant, ultimately tragic career. “I think that record gave me a reputation for being a really dark, depressed person,” he said, “but I think I’m just about as happy as all the other people I know. Which is occasionally.

                Paul McCartney

Flaming Pie - Half-Speed Master Edition

Flaming Pie is the tenth solo studio album by Paul McCartney, first released in 1997.

Having been heavily involved in The Beatles’ Anthology project, Paul had time to reflect on the standards he and his bandmates had set during their career, and applied these to what would become his first album in four years. Made in a much more spontaneous style, with songs recorded here and there, mostly on holiday, it’s an album that luxuriates in its own sense of fun.

Featuring producers George Martin and Jeff Lynne, as well as musicians including Steve Miller, Ringo Starr and his own son, James McCartney, Flaming Pie would go on to become one of Paul’s most acclaimed albums. Sales were brisk, with the album only kept from the Number 1 slot on both sides of the Atlantic by the cultural phenomenon that was the Spice Girls’ Spice album.

While also loving drugs and hating taxes. So here we get those 60's soul gems, "What's Going On" masterpieces and more funky moments. A great place to start for the casual fan.

                        808s & Heartbreak - Reissue

808s & Heartbreak is the fourth studio album by Kanye West. It was released on 24th November 2008 through Def Jam Recordings and Roc-A-Fella Records, re-issued in 2016 for the US, and is now being made available ex-US. Conceived in the wake of several distressing personal events, 808s & Heartbreak marked a major musical departure from West’s previous rap records, instead featuring a sparse, electronic sound and West singing through an Auto-Tune vocal processor. His lyrics explore themes of loss, alienated fame, and heartache, while the album’s production abandons conventional hip hop sounds in favor of a minimalist sonic palette, which includes prominent use of the titular Roland TR-808 drum machine.

Despite varying responses from listeners, the album received positive reviews from most music critics, who generally commented on West’s experimentation, and was named one of 2008’s best records in several year-end lists. Four singles were released in promotion, including the hit singles “Love Lockdown” and “Heartless”. 808s & Heartbreak has since been cited as a prominent influence on subsequent hip hop, pop, and R&B music. This was due to a new wave of rappers, singers, and producers coming to adopt aspects of its style and thematic content.

                          The Sound Of The Suburbs

'Exclusively on vinyl, come 17 hugely influential artists and tracks that exploded from the punk phenomenon of the late 1970’s. Essential punk classics from Siouxsie & The Banshees, Iggy Pop, The Ruts and The Members (whose anthem gives this compilation its title) are here alongside legendary new-wave tracks from The Buzzcocks, Blondie, The Skids and The Only Ones as well as the #1 ‘Rat Trap’ from The Boomtown Rats. This period produced many amazing songwriters and interpreters which are included, namely Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Squeeze and Patti Smith’s performance of the Bruce Springsteen penned ‘Because The Night’. As the ‘70s ended, The Jam and The Clash produced some of their most seminal work and the next wave of new wave artists emerged with both Adam & The Ants and The Cure completing this journey through a selection of bone-fide essential tracks that every vinyl collection should contain.

'Picture London, thirty years ago, as Neneh Cherry gears up to release her debut album Raw Like Sushi - a thrumming, restless, vibrant city that in 1989, much like today, pulsed defiantly against a backdrop of increasing political doom, rocking to the joyful noise of culture leaping across boundaries, radically reordering itself. Rents are low. Soho hums to the chatter of poets, vagabonds and petty sex tourists drinking in the same elixir of possibility. The divisions between the queens of Old Compton and mods and punks of Carnaby Streets look huge but feel slight. A spirit of multiracial unity permeates the air. New York hip hop and Chicago house continue their euphoric colonisation of nightclub culture. Amid this maelstrom, Neneh Cherry emerges, capturing the entire, giddy rumble of this rolling community street culture in one record, Raw Like Sushi. With no interest in genre, Raw Like Sushi upsets and inverts everything you thought you knew about how pop can work, at its brightest and most effective. One of the greatest debut albums of all time, born halfway between Never Mind The Bollocks and Boy In Da Corner, Raw Like Sushi was ready to escort you right to the centre of its dancefloor, dripping hot sweat under a mirrorball at 3am - and its particular magic remains just as potent today.

Since the release of Raw Like Sushi 30 years ago, Neneh Cherry has continued to define and redefine culture, style and music releasing five studio albums, including 2018’s Broken Politics, produced by Four Tet, which was met with critical acclaim by the likes of The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The Times, Q and Pitchfork. Neneh went on to tour the album throughout 2019 including her largest ever headline show at London’s Roundhouse, and festival performances at Glastonbury, Latitude, Primavera, Pitchfork and more proving her music and message more relevant than ever.

                                    The Band

                                    The Band (50th Anniversary Edition)

Released on the 22nd September, 1969, the eponymous second studio effort by The Band is a concept album, with the songs focusing on people, places and traditions associated with an older version of Americana. It was recorded in the pool house of a home rented by the group in the Hollywood Hills which was once owned by Judy Garland, Wally Cox and, at the time the group worked there, Sammy Davis, Jr. According to Robbie Robertson, the location was chosen to give the songs a Basement Tapes–like feel in what was termed “a clubhouse concept.”

The album includes many of The Band’s best-known and critically acclaimed songs, including “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” which Rolling Stone named the 249th greatest song of all time. The magazine also ranked the album number 45 in their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Time magazine included it in their unranked 2006 list of the 100 greatest albums.

Robert Christgau, who spent 37 years as the chief music critic and senior editor for The Village Voice, declared it better than Abbey Road, which had been released four days following, writing that The Band’s LP is an “A-plus record if I’ve ever rated one.”

The album is preserved in the National Recording Registry and is also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Unreleased at the time, they were recently unearthed when archive work began on the expanded 2019 20th anniversary box set editions. Of the five "Secret Psychedelic Mixes" on the new set the aptly titled" Out Of Control (21 Minutes Of Madness)" takes the "Surrender" classic and transports it to all kinds of interesting places. Matt says: Crowning glory of one of their best LP's extended and tweaked for maximum dancefloor enjoyment. Sounding as crucial and killer as it did twenty years ago.

I Feel Love (Patrick Cowley Mega Mix) / Boogie Wonderland

In 1982, Donna Summer’s I Feel Love - which had re-defined dance music on its original release in 1977 - was remixed by Patrick Cowley and became a huge dance floor anthem once again. The extended “Mega Mix” version, running to over 15 mins, has long been celebrated as one of the most essential dance music cuts of all time and now, for the first time since its original release, we are proud to reissue this amazing track as a 12” single. And to make this the best 12” single you could ever own, we have coupled I Feel Love with another towering classic of the genre.

From 1979 we present the full 8-minute plus version of the breath-taking Boogie Wonderland by Earth, Wind and Fire with The Emotions. One of the best loved disco tracks of all time - and in its extended version here - not only is it a huge floor filler but it’s also a truly euphoric celebration in music.

I Feel Love the Patrick Cowley Mega Mix, and the extended version of ‘Boogie Wonderland’ together for the first time on one 12” single. Two essential anthems for every music collection

                                      Peaky Blinders OST Series 1-5

Peaky Blinders is a British crime drama television series primarily set in Birmingham, England following aftermath of World War I. Starring Cillian Murphy as ‘Tommy Shelby’ – the gang’s leader, the show follows the exploits of the Shelby crime family. The fictional gang is loosely based on the Peaky Blinders, a real urban youth gang who were active in the city from the 1890’s and early twentieth century. The show is known for its dark and dramatic soundtrack. The soundtrack is a window into the mind of Tommy – a tortured ex-soldier with a sensitive side who appears to be suffering from PTSD after fighting in the trenches during World War One.

This 3LP set will feature music and key clips of dialogue from all 5 series the show, the 5th series aired late 2019 to critical acclaim. The album will feature Nick Cave’s title opening track Red Right Hand and PJ Harvey’s cover recorded exclusively for the show. Other artist’s music featured on the show and set to appear on this release are The White Stripes, Laura Marling, Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood, Radiohead, The Last Shadow Puppets, Queens of the Stone Age, David Bowie, Foals, Black Sabbath, Idles, Joy Division and Richard Hawley who has covered Bob Dylan’s “Ballad Of A Thin Man”.

Mine says: A soundtrack that features not one but three Nick Cave songs can only be a winner if you ask me. This sometimes pensive but often raucous collection of songs perfectly soundtracked the many dramatic scenes in Peaky Blinders, or, as Cillian Murphy better describes it: 'The sound has this “peakiness” to it.'

Their sophomore disc, it saw the band advance their sound, moving easily between acoustic folk and electric progressive rock on both complicated, psychedelic medleys and accessible ‘pop’ songs such as the title track which gained significant radio airplay and resulted in a guest appearance on BBC TV’s Top of the Pops. Active since the late 1960s, Caravan signed to the Decca/Deram label during the early 1970s and this album is considered a high-point of the band’s career.

This is their third studio album released in 1971 when they were signed to the Decca/Deram label and is considered a high-point of the band’s career. Rolling Stone listed the album as No. 34 on their list of “50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time” saying it evoked “a Middle Earth sunset, with the music wavering between medieval folk melodies and jazz-savvy musos”. According to AllMusic, the album is “one of the most beloved, and eccentric prog albums of them all” and “probably Caravan’s finest hour”.

The progressive rock and folk elements are still prevalent though and work well with the jazz on tracks such as The Love in Your Eye suite. Active since the late 1960s, Caravan signed to the Decca/Deram label during the early 1970s and this album is considered a high-point of the band’s career.

                                                'Til The Band Comes In

Following on from a quartet of critically acclaimed solo LPs, ‘Scott’, ‘Scott 2’, Scott 3’ and ‘Scott 4’, and the compilation LP, ‘Scott Walker Sings Songs from His TV Series’, ‘ Til The Band Comes In’ was his sixth studio album. Originally released in 1970, the LP is a loose concept album about the inhabitants of a tenement building. Produced by Johnny Franz, it features the singles “Jean The Machine” and ‘Til The Band Comes In”. “Long About Now’ features the Israeli born singer Esther Ofarim of “Cinderella Rockefella” fame.

                                                  Climate Of Hunter

‘Climate of Hunter’ was considered by many as Scott’s ‘comeback’ solo album due to a self-imposed 10 year hiatus following the release of his 7th studio album, ‘We Had It All’ in 1974. Originally released in March 1984, it contains the single “Track Three”, which was accompanied by a stunning promo video which was first aired on the Old Grey Whistle Test. The album features a stellar cast including Billy Ocean, Mark Isham, Evan Parker and Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits playing guitar on a cover of the Tennessee Williams classic, “Blanket Roll Blues”. Among the album’s many fans was Bono of U2 who is on record as saying: “Scott Walker’s Climate of Hunter was a great influence on The Joshua Tree – just listen to “With Or Without You” – March 1987.

                                                    Tilt

Scott Walker’s twelfth studio album from 1995 is now presented over 2LPs for an improved audio experience. Originally released in May of 1995 the album was Scott’s first album in 11 years and remarkably reached Number 27 in the UK Albums chart. No singles were released from ‘Tilt’. Scott explained his 11 year hiatus to journalist Richard Cook saying that he had become “the Orson Welles of the record industry……People take me to lunch, but nobody wants to finance the picture”. Tim Finn from Crowded House is a huge fan of ‘Tilt’: “I was very impressed with ‘Tilt’, good on car journeys through unfamiliar landscapes. It’s very brave, very bold, very unconcerned with trends: Scott’s out there on his own path, albeit a very twisted one”.

                                                      Pulp

His 'N' Hers - Vinyl Reissue

'His ‘n’ Hers is the fourth studio album by Pulp and was the first to be released on a major label. It was originally released in 1994 and together with its follow-up Different Class, it is one of the highlights of 90’s ‘Britpop’.
Its influences emanate from old glam and post-punk records, with the hooks and immediacy of perfect pop — it was sensual yet intellectual, cheap yet sophisticated, retro yet modern — with each seeming paradox giving the music weight instead of weighing it down: with Jarvis Cocker’s wry comments on life in Sheffield, where desperation, sex, and crime are always on the surface, creating evocative images with an appropriate amount of drama and a surplus of flair! The album contains their first top 40 hit in the UK – Do You Remember the First Time? and Lipgloss.

This deluxe 25th anniversary reissue edition is pressed on 180-gram heavyweight 2-disc set for extra audio quality! Includes enhanced packaging – housed in sumptuous gatefold sleeve with printed inner bags and was remastered at Abbey Road – supervised by Steve Mackey (Pulp bass player and producer). Steve later went on to produce for MIA, Florence + The Machine, Arcade Fire etc.

                                                        Marvin Gaye

                                                        What's Going On Live

Designated “Marvin Gaye Day,” it began with Gaye giving a speech to students at Cardozo High, the school he’d attended, before he and his parents were ushered by motorcade to other points around the city. They visited the office of D.C.’s mayor, Walter Washington, who presented Gaye with a key to the city.

A VIP reception followed at the U.S. House of Representatives’ Rayburn House Office Building, before the evening’s hotly anticipated main event at the Kennedy Center: Marvin Gaye’s first live performance in four years. After opening acts and onstage testimonials by others, Gaye finally took the stage at around 11pm. The legendary concert – Marvin Gaye’s only live performance of his iconic 1971 What’s Going On album in full – was recorded. After being shelved for decades, the recording was eventually released on CD in 2001 within Motown/UMe’s expanded deluxe edition for Gaye’s What’s Going On album.

Never before issued on vinyl or as a standalone CD, What’s Going On Live is newly mixed by John Morales at M+M Mix Studios and mastered by Alex Abrash at AA Mastering for its October 18 release by Motown/UMC. The album is making its vinyl debut in black 2LP with deluxe gatefold packaging, in addition to CD. The vinyl and CD packages include rare photos from Gaye’s performance and new liner notes by Marvin Gaye biographer David Ritz. What’s Going On Live includes the only known live recordings of Gaye performing four songs: “That's The Way Love Is” and “You,” which he opened the D.C. concert with as part of a meditative 13-minute medley; “Right On;” and “Wholy Holy.” Due to an unfortunate lag in switching the first reel-to-reel tape to a second one during the concert, Gaye’s performance of “Mercy Mercy Me” from the What’s Going On album was not successfully recorded.

                                                          Moseley Shoals

Following a successful reissue for Record Store Day, on red vinyl, we present the black vinyl edition of this classic album. Originally released in 1996, at the height of ‘Britpop’, the album reached no. 2 in the UK, and amassed 92 weeks on the charts and sold a million copies world-wide!

‘Moseley’ takes its name from an area in Birmingham, ‘Moseley Shoals’ is a tribute to Muscle Shoals, the legendary soul recording studios in Alabama. A low-key start to their career was boosted by two things – the endorsement of two of Britain’s biggest pop stars – Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher, and the exposure given to the first single, The Riverboat Song, by Chris Evans on his hit TV show ‘TFI Friday’.

The album was produced by Weller’s producer at the time – Brendan Lynch, giving it a strong, organic R&B feel (influenced by the Small Faces and Weller’s solo recordings) with a pronounced 60s flourish, mixing in traces of Beatles and Stones, as well as elements of prog-rock and psychedelia, adding an even more eclectic flavour to their sound.

Contains three other top-10 singles – The Day We Caught the Train (no. 4), You’ve Got It Bad (no. 7) and The Circle (no. 6).

Abbey Road - 50th Anniversary Edition

London – August 8, 2019 – It was 50 years ago today, on August 8, 1969, that the world’s most famous band stepped out from London’s EMI Recording Studios to stride, single-file, across the black and white stripes of Abbey Road’s nearby zebra crossing. With photographer Iain Macmillan balanced on a stepladder and one policeman stopping the street’s light traffic, The Beatles crossed back and forth three times, led by John Lennon, followed by Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison. Just six photos were taken, with the fifth selected as the cover shot for The Beatles’ penultimate studio album, Abbey Road, named after the tree-lined street in which the studios are located. Released September 26, 1969, Abbey Road was not The Beatles’ final album, as Let It Be followed in 1970, but it was the last one John, Paul, George, and Ringo recorded together as a band. The Beatles will celebrate Abbey Road’s anniversary with a suite of beautifully presented packages to be released worldwide on September 27 by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe.

This is the first time Abbey Road has been remixed and presented with additional session recordings and demos. The album’s sweeping new edition follows the universally acclaimed remixed and expanded anniversary editions of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and The BEATLES (‘White Album’) released in 2017 and 2018, respectively. To create Abbey Road’s new stereo, 5.1 surround, and Dolby Atmos mixes, Martin and Okell worked with an expert team of engineers and audio restoration specialists at Abbey Road Studios. All the new Abbey Road releases feature the new stereo album mix, sourced directly from the original eight-track session tapes. To produce the mix, Giles was guided by the album’s original stereo mix supervised by his father, George Martin.

“The magic comes from the hands playing the instruments, the blend of The Beatles’ voices, the beauty of the arrangements,” Giles Martin explains in his written introduction for the new edition. “Our quest is simply to ensure everything sounds as fresh and hits you as hard as it would have on the day it was recorded.”

Andy says: Their final album, and it's a beauty! This is a gorgeous, opulent, warm rock record that set the tone for FM seventies music. And for its 50th Anniversary, ‘Abbey Road’ gets remixed and presented with additional session recordings and demos across six different formats.

During an all too short four-year run that spanned 1968 to 1972, Creedence Clearwater Revival crafted some of the most popular, influential and enduring music that the world has ever known. Californian-based John Fogerty, Tom Fogerty, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook fused the raw, organic honesty of country music with the fire and urgency of rock ‘n’ roll to create a catalogue that even five decades later still sounds fresh and vibrant. This collection brings together some of Creedence’s biggest and best recordings and also features two live tracks to showcase what a formidable live act the group were.

                                                                LP includes MP3 Download Code.

                                                                Scott Walker

Scott 4 - 50th Anniversary Half Speed Master Edition

Despite its initial lukewarm reaction, the album failed to chart on release (possibly due to the album being released under his birth name of Noel Scott Engel!), today ‘Scott 4’ is considered one of his greatest achievements and has been recognised as a major influence on countless artists – David Bowie, Jarvis Cocker, Marc Almond amongst others. His song-writing reached new peaks on this record (it was the first Scott Walker album to feature entirely original material) and is incisive, articulate and acerbic.

Here are some of his finest compositions – The Seventh Seal (inspired by the classic Ingmar Bergman film), features a haunting Ennio Morricone-style arrangement, The Old Man’s Back Again also displays cinematic qualities and a penetrating theme (“dedicated to the neo-Stalinist regime,” the “old man” of this song was supposedly Josef Stalin), Duchess and Boy Child are achingly beautiful, timeless classics. The eclectic mix of folk, country, and soul influences contained, make this an intriguing and innovative body of work.

This special 50th anniversary edition has been mastered and cut to vinyl using the unique ‘half-speed’ process, at Abbey Road Studios, London, for ultimate sound quality.

                                                                  Orchestral Favorites - 40th Anniversary

When Frank Zappa’s Orchestral Favorites was eventually released in 1979 as part of fulfilling his contract with his contentious former label, the album was dumped into the world along with several other titles without the legendary musician’s permission or quality control. It did not include liner notes or credits and the artwork and audio wasn’t approved by Zappa who publicly criticized it as not being up to his standards. As a result of not receiving any promotion, it was quickly relegated to the bargain bin shortly after its release.

Four decades later, in celebration of the long-beleaguered album’s 40th anniversary, the Zappa Family Trust is righting this wrong and presenting Orchestral Favorites with the audiophile detail and respect it deserves to commemorate the historical event that took place at UCLA’s Royce Hall in September 1975 where the compositions were recorded.

Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks - Extended Edition

A whole disc of new music, plus Eno’s seminal original album re-mastered.

"Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks" was written, produced and performed by Brian Eno together with his brother Roger and Daniel Lanois. The music was originally recorded in 1983 for the landmark feature-length documentary ‘For All Mankind’, which was directed by American journalist, film director and screenwriter Al Reinert. The film features 35mm footage of the Apollo 11 moon landing with real-time commentary, as well as the Apollo astronauts sharing their recollections of the momentous events surrounding it. An extended edition of the album will be released on July 19th in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. This very special anniversary release features the original album remastered by Abbey Road's Miles Showell, as well as an accompanying album of 11 new instrumental compositions that reimagine the soundtrack to ‘For All Mankind’.

The music from the original album is highly recognizable, and tracks from it have been streamed in excess of 300 million times. Since its release, many of the songs from "Apollo" have found a life of their own, featuring in any number of films, television shows and commercials – most notably ‘Trainspotting’, ‘Traffic’, ‘28 Days Later, ‘Drive’ and ‘Love’. ‘An Ending (Ascent)’ was also used in the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. The 11 new tracks on "Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks" find Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois and Roger Eno working collectively for the first time since the original album in 1983. Lanois contributed 3 compositions; "Capsule", "Last Step From The Surface" and "Fine-grained", while Roger Eno’s are "Waking Up", "Under The Moon" and "Strange Quiet".

Barry says: There aren't many things in this world that can compete with me for “The Best Things To Have Come Out On The 30th Of June 1983”, but 'Apollo...' is one of them. In classic Eno fashion, this is a well balanced juxtaposition of plaintive piano, expertly crafted walls of tectonic synth (both monolithic and near-weightless) and Eno's legendary skill at balancing the two. This extended edition is without a doubt, an essential item for fans or ambient explorers alike. Stunning.

Released on July 13, 2004 on Geffen Records, it is named after Malcolm Gladwell’s book of the same name (2000), Featuring rough-and-ready joints like "Duck Down!" and the single "Don't Say Nuthin'", warmer soul-induced songs like "Guns Are Drawn" and "Somebody's Gotta Do It" (with Jean Grae) plus a mad cover of George Kranz's bonkers disco cut "Din Da Da"! Plus, there's a secret, uncredited cover of the Booker T breakbeat fave "Melting Pot", which is a real bonus. "The Tipping Point" has been noted by music writers for exhibiting and emphasizing soul, jazz, and funk influences as well.

"Queen had long been one of the biggest bands in the world by 1980's The Game, but this album was the first time they made a glossy, unabashed pop album, one that was designed to sound exactly like its time. They might be posed in leather jackets on the cover, but they hardly sound tough or menacing -- they rarely rock, at least not in the gonzo fashion that's long been their trademark. Gone are the bombastic orchestras of guitars and with them the charging, relentless rhythms that kept Queen grounded even at their grandest moments. Now, when they rock, they'll haul out a clever rockabilly pastiche, as they do on the tremendous "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," a sly revival of old-time rock & roll that never sounds moldy, thanks in large part to Freddie Mercury's panache. But even that is an exception to the rule on The Game. Usually, when they want to rock here, they wind up sounding like Boston, as they do on John Deacon's "Need Your Loving Tonight," or they sound a bit like a new wave-conscious rocker like Billy Squier, as they do on the propulsive "Coming Soon." But even those are exceptions to the overall rule on The Game, since most of the album is devoted to disco-rock blends -- best heard on the globe-conquering "Another One Bites the Dust," but also present in the unintentionally kitschy positivity anthem "Don't Try Suicide" -- and the majestic power ballads that became their calling card in the '80s, as they reworked the surging "Save Me" and the elegant "Play the Game" numerous times, often with lesser results. So, The Game winds up as a mixed bag, as many Queen albums often do, but again the striking difference with this album is that it finds Queen turning decidedly, decisively pop, and it's a grand, state-of-the-art circa 1980 pop album that still stands as one of the band's most enjoyable records. But the very fact that it does showcase a band that's turned away from rock and toward pop means that for some Queen fans, it marks the end of the road, and despite the album's charms, it's easy to see why." - Allmusic.

                                                                            Queen

                                                                            A Day At The Races

"In every sense, A Day at the Races is an unapologetic sequel to A Night at the Opera, the 1975 breakthrough that established Queen as rock & roll royalty. The band never attempts to hide that the record is a sequel -- the two albums boast the same variation on the same cover art, the titles are both taken from old Marx Brothers films and serve as counterpoints to each other. But even though the two albums look the same, they don't quite sound the same, A Day at the Races is a bit tighter than its predecessor, yet tighter doesn't necessarily mean better for a band as extravagant as Queen. One of the great things about A Night at the Opera is that the lingering elements of early Queen -- the pastoral folk of "39," the metallic menace of "Death on Two Legs" -- dovetailed with an indulgence of camp and a truly, well, operatic scale. Here, the eccentricities are trimmed back somewhat -- they still bubble up on "The Millionaire Waltz," an example of the music hall pop that dominated Night, the pro-Native American saga "White Man" is undercut somewhat by the cowboys 'n' indians rhythms -- in favor of a driving, purposeful hard rock that still could have some slyly hidden perversities (or in the case of the opening "Tie Your Mother Down," some not-so-hidden perversity) but this is exquisitely detailed hard rock, dense with minutiae but never lush or fussy. In a sense, it could even function as the bridge between Sheer Heart Attack and Night at the Opera -- it's every bit as hard as the former and nearly as florid as the latter -- but its sleek, streamlined finish is the biggest indication that Queen has entered a new phase, where they're globe-conquering titans instead of underdogs on the make." - Allmusic.

                                                                                A Night At The Opera

"Queen were straining at the boundaries of hard rock and heavy metal on Sheer Heart Attack, but they broke down all the barricades on A Night at the Opera, a self-consciously ridiculous and overblown hard rock masterpiece. Using the multi-layered guitars of its predecessor as a foundation, A Night at the Opera encompasses metal ("Death on Two Legs," "Sweet Lady"), pop (the lovely, shimmering "You're My Best Friend"), campy British music hall ("Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon," "Seaside Rendezvous"), and mystical prog rock ("'39," "The Prophet's Song"), eventually bringing it all together on the pseudo-operatic "Bohemian Rhapsody." In short, it's a lot like Queen's own version of Led Zeppelin IV, but where Zep find dark menace in bombast, Queen celebrate their own pomposity. No one in the band takes anything too seriously, otherwise the arrangements wouldn't be as ludicrously exaggerated as they are. But the appeal -- and the influence -- of A Night at the Opera is in its detailed, meticulous productions. It's prog rock with a sense of humor as well as dynamics, and Queen never bettered their approach anywhere else." Allmusic.

The hardest working man in showbiz, godfather of soul, funk and possibly fuck, James Mu'Fuckin' Brown dropped this masterpiece back in 1972 and it's slapped suckers silly ever since. Now we get a f-f-f-fresh double vinyl reissue of "Get On The Good Foot" with new and improved sound quality for 2019. The album's title track was issued as a two part single on its release and predictably topped the Billboard's R&B chart at the time. Elsewhere "The Whole World Needs Liberation" takes a conscious direction while "Cold Sweat" just gets down and dirty for the dancers.

Released in February 1973, Black Caesar is a gangster drama set in Harlem, written and directed by Larry Cohen and starring Fred Williamson, Gloria Hendry, D’Urville Martin, and Julius Harris. Pieces of Brown’s soundtrack, which also features the J.B.’s and Lyn Collins, have since been notably sampled in tracks by top rap artists, including “The Boss,” sampled by Ice-T in “You Played Yourself,” by Trick Daddy in “Take It To Da House,” and by Nas in “Get Down,” among others. Black Caesar’s soundtrack also features the Bodie Chandler and Barry De Vorzon-written single arranged by J.B.’s band director Fred Wesley, “Down And Out In New York City,” which peaked at No. 13 on Billboard’s R&B chart and at No. 50 on the Pop chart.

'You’re The Man" is the first-ever planned “lost” Tamla/Motown album from Marvin Gaye. Fifteen of the album’s 17 tracks are on vinyl for the first time and three tracks are newly mixed by Salaam Remi.
The album also includes the rare long LP version of Marvin Gaye’s cancelled Christmas single from ’72, as well as an unreleased vault mix of its instrumental B-side, and new essay by Marvin’s biographer, David Ritz. The release concides with the 60th anniversary of Motown as a label and also Marvin Gaye’s 80th Birthday (April 2).
While the tracks have been issued on various collections and deluxe editions, this is the first time they have been placed in their proper context. In addition to context, "You’re The Man" was the album that was proposed to follow-up the monumental "What’s Going On", and it contains all of Marvin’s solo and non-soundtrack recordings from 1972 (his next two albums in quick succession: "Trouble Man" and "Let’s Get It On").

                                                                                      Scott Walker

                                                                                              The Crack

40th anniversary reissue to tie in with the band’s ‘40 Years of The Crack’ tour – 2019.

The band’s debut album, released in 1979, The Crack contains the UK hit singles: Babylon’s Burning and Something That I Said.

Very much fitting the era’s protest atmosphere – the white-reggae of Jah War, which was written in the aftermath of the Southall unrest and the over-use of force by the Metropolitan Police’s Special Patrol Group in the ‘70s, was also released as a single. Hard-hitting song S.U.S also deals with similar issues – a withering comment on the notorious stop and search laws.

The album is both anthemic, with simmering roots reggae and dub, but seared by classic rock guitar leads, totally redefining the genre and combining to create an ominous atmosphere of paranoia and dread reflective of the times in which it was made.

Re-mastered by Tim Turan at Turan Audio.
Cut to vinyl at Abbey Road Studios.

The Specials, one of the most electrifying, influential and important bands of all time, release “Encore”, their first new music for 37 years.

2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the formation of The Specials and the legendary Two-Tone label in Coventry in 1979, and also marks 10 years since the band reformed to play some of the most vital and joyous live shows in recent memory.

The 10-song “Encore” was produced by Specials founding members Terry Hall, Lynval Golding and Horace Panter alongside Danish musician/producer Torp Larsen and indeed is the first time Hall, Golding & Panter have recorded new material together since the band’s 1981 No.1 single Ghost Town.

Debut 1998 album from UNKLE, back then a production duo of Mo' Wax head honcho James Lavelle and beat builder extraordinaire DJ Shadow. The soundscape of sampled breaks and ominous soundscapes is pretty similar to "Endtroducing", but with one big difference; "Psyence Fiction" has a line-up of guest vocalists. These included Badly Drawn Boy, Richard Ashcroft and Thom Yorke for the indie kids and Kool G Rap, Latyrx and Beastie's Mike D for the hip hop heads, all adding their own unique edge to the tracks they appear on. Dark, moody and brooding, the album is a 90s essential. After the recent Man From Mo'Wax generated a pre-Bros buzz, this one's been on everyone's wantlist.

Remastered from the original ¼” tapes and cut at half speed at Abbey Road studios, London. Both artwork and audio have personally been overseen and orchestrated by Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin.

The 11th and final studio album from Siouxsie and the Banshees – The Rapture was also as fresh and innovative as the first. How the Banshees are able to remain vital and celebrated after almost two decades is down to their ever evolving and metamorphic spirit. Only ever released on gatefold 2xLP vinyl outside of the UK, The Rapture’s artwork has been reimagined and designed to rightly reflect this final Banshees offering.

                                                                                                    Siouxsie And The Banshees

UMC are proud to announce the final batch of Siouxsie and the Banshees vinyl reissues. Remastered from the original ¼” tapes and cut at half speed at Abbey Road studios, London. Both artwork and audio have personally been overseen and orchestrated by Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin.

The Banshees’ third studio album landed in summer 1980 and introduced two new members ‘Budgie’ on drums and ‘McGeoch’ on guitar. Kaleidoscope would give the group their first hit album peaking at No’5 in the charts. Hits such as ‘Happy House’ and ‘Christine’ are atmospheric and dripping with sarcasm, the album swirls with synths and programmed drum loops for the first time.

‘Undun’ is the 10th studio album from legendary hip-hop band The Roots originally released on 2nd December, 2011. The Grammy® nominated album (best rap album) incorporates neo soul and indie music elements. It is an existential concept album about the short, tragic life of fictional character Redford Stevens, set in urban poverty, and is told through a reverse-chronological narrative. Undun received widespread acclaim from critics, who praised its existential subject matter, production quality, and the band’s musicianship. It was included on several critics’ year-end lists of best albums. Previously released as a 2LP set, this version has now been converted to 1LP.

                                                                                                      Brian Eno

UMC / Virgin EMI present vinyl editions of the seminal Brian Eno albums ‘Discreet Music, ‘Music For Films, ‘Music For Airports’ and ‘On Land’.

Although originally released interspersed with other albums and thus not fully sequential, these landmark records chart 4 key points in a fascinating journey that saw Eno explore generative music, found-sound ‘non instruments’, studio experimentation, ‘figurative music’ and–most notably–building upon Erik Satie’s concept of ‘furniture music’, eventually coining the now vernacular-standard term ‘ambient’.

                                                                                                        FORMAT INFORMATION

In November 1968, millions of double LPs were shipped to record stores worldwide ahead of that tumultuous year’s most anticipated music event: the November 22nd release of The BEATLES (soon to be better known as ‘The White Album’). With their ninth studio album, The Beatles took the world on a whole new trip, side one blasting off with the exhilarating rush of a screaming jet escorting Paul McCartney’s punchy, exuberant vocals on “Back In The U.S.S.R.” “Dear Prudence” came next, John Lennon warmly beckoning his friend and all of us to “look around.” George Harrison imparted timeless wisdom in “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” singing, “With every mistake we must surely be learning.” Ringo Starr’s “Don’t Pass Me By” marked his first solo songwriting credit on a Beatles album. For 50 years, ‘The White Album’ has invited its listeners to venture forth and explore the breadth and ambition of its music, delighting and inspiring each new generation in turn.

For it’s 50th anniversary, The Beatles release a suite of lavishly presented ‘White Album’ packages. The album’s 30 tracks are newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and mix engineer Sam Okell in stereo and 5.1 surround audio, joined by 27 early acoustic demos and 50 session takes, most of which are previously unreleased in any form.

“We had left Sgt. Pepper’s band to play in his sunny Elysian Fields and were now striding out in new directions without a map,” says Paul McCartney in his written introduction for the new ‘White Album’ releases.

This is the first time The BEATLES (‘White Album’) has been remixed and presented with additional demos and session recordings. The album’s sweeping new edition follows 2017’s universally acclaimed Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Anniversary Edition releases. To create the new stereo and 5.1 surround audio mixes for ‘The White Album,’ Martin and Okell worked with an expert team of engineers and audio restoration specialists at Abbey Road Studios in London. All the new ‘White Album’ releases include Martin’s new stereo album mix, sourced directly from the original four-track and eight-track session tapes. Martin’s new mix is guided by the album’s original stereo mix produced by his father, George Martin.

“In remixing ‘The White Album,’ we’ve tried to bring you as close as possible to The Beatles in the studio,” explains Giles Martin in his written introduction for the new edition. “We’ve peeled back the layers of the ‘Glass Onion’ with the hope of immersing old and new listeners into one of the most diverse and inspiring albums ever made.”

The minimalist artwork for ‘The White Album’ was created by artist Richard Hamilton, one of Britain’s leading figures in the creation and rise of pop art. The top-loading gatefold sleeve’s stark white exterior had ‘The BEATLES’ embossed on the front and printed on the spine with the album’s catalogue number. Early copies of ‘The White Album’ were also individually numbered on the front, which has also been done for the new edition’s Super Deluxe package. The set’s six CDs and Blu-ray disc are housed in a slipsleeved 164-page hardbound book, with pull-out reproductions of the original album’s four glossy color portrait photographs of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, as well as the album’s large fold-out poster with a photo collage on one side and lyrics on the other. The beautiful book is illustrated with rare photographs, reproductions of handwritten and notated lyrics, previously unpublished photos of recording sheets and tape boxes, and reproduced original ‘White Album’ print ads. The book’s comprehensive written pieces include new introductions by Paul McCartney and Giles Martin, and in-depth chapters covering track-by-track details and session notes reflecting The Beatles’ year between the release of ‘Sgt. Pepper’ and recording sessions for ‘The White Album,’ the band’s July 28 1968 “Mad Day Out” photo shoot in locations around London, the album artwork, the lead-up and execution of the album’s blockbuster release, and its far-ranging influence, written by Beatles historian, author and radio producer Kevin Howlett; journalist and author John Harris; and Tate Britain’s Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Andrew Wilson.

The Deluxe 3CD is presented in an embossed digipak with the fold-out poster and portrait photos, plus a 24-page booklet abridged from the Super Deluxe book. Presented in a lift-top box with a four-page booklet, the limited edition Deluxe 4LP vinyl set presents the 2LP album in a faithful, embossed reproduction of its original gatefold sleeve with the fold-out poster and portrait photos, paired with the 2LP Esher Demos in an embossed gatefold sleeve.

Much of the initial songwriting for ‘The White Album’ was done in Rishikesh, India between February and April 1968, when John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr joined a course at the Maharishi’s Academy of Transcendental Meditation. In a postcard to Ringo, who had returned to England before the others, John wrote, “we’ve got about two L.P.s worth of songs now so get your drums out.”

During the last week of May, The Beatles gathered at George’s house in Esher, Surrey, where they recorded acoustic demos for 27 songs. Known as the Esher Demos, all 27 recordings are included in the new edition’s Deluxe and Super Deluxe packages, sourced from the original four-track tapes. Twenty-one of the demoed songs were recorded during the subsequent studio sessions, and 19 were ultimately finished and included on ‘The White Album.’

The Beatles’ studio sessions for The BEATLES (‘White Album’) began on May 30, 1968 at Abbey Road Studios. In the 20 weeks that followed, The Beatles devoted most of their time to sessions there for the new album, with some recording also done at Trident Studios. The final session for the album took place at Abbey Road on October 16, a 24-hour marathon with producer George Martin to sequence the double album’s four sides and to complete edits and cross-fades between its songs. The Beatles’ approach to recording for ‘The White Album’ was quite different from what they had done for ‘Sgt. Pepper.’ Rather than layering individually overdubbed parts on a multi-track tape, many of the ‘White Album’ session takes were recorded to four-track and eight-track tape as group performances with a live lead vocal. The Beatles often recorded take after take for a song, as evidenced by the Super Deluxe set’s Take 102 for “Not Guilty,” a song that was not included on the album. This live-take recording style resulted in a less intricately structured, more unbridled album that would shift the course of rock music and cut a path for punk and indie rock.

The Beatles’ newly adopted method of recording all through the night was time consuming and exhausting for their producer, George Martin. Martin had other duties, including his management of AIR (Associated Independent Recording), and he had also composed the orchestral score for The Beatles’ animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, released in July 1968. After the first three months of ‘White Album’ sessions, Martin took a three-week holiday from the studio, entrusting the control room to his young assistant Chris Thomas and balance engineer Ken Scott. Scott had taken the place of engineer Geoff Emerick, who left the sessions in mid-July. On August 22, Ringo Starr also left the sessions, returning 11 days later to find his drum kit adorned with flowers from his bandmates. While the sessions’ four and a half months of long hours and many takes did spark occasional friction in the studio, the session recordings reveal the closeness, camaraderie, and collaborative strengths within the band, as well as with George Martin.

The BEATLES (‘White Album’) was the first Beatles album to be released on the group’s own Apple Records label. Issued in both stereo and mono for the U.K. and in stereo for the U.S., the double album was an immediate bestseller, entering the British chart at number one and remaining there for eight of the 22 weeks it was listed. ‘The White Album’ also debuted at number one on the U.S. chart, holding the top spot for nine weeks of its initial 65-week chart run. In his glowing ‘White Album’ review for Rolling Stone, the magazine’s co-founder Jann Wenner declared: “It is the best album they have ever released, and only The Beatles are capable of making a better one.” In the U.S., ‘The White Album’ is 19-times platinum-certified by the RIAA and in 2000, it was inducted into the Recording Academy’s GRAMMY® Hall of Fame, recognizing “recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance.”

Containing everything you'd want from a DJ Shadow LP, the fifteen track LP zips through crazy B-boy breaks, audacious cut ups, sublime hip hop instrumentals, oddball samples, quirky downbeat and leftfield rock weirdness. It was released on June 4, 2002, by MCA Records to widespread acclaim from critics. This double LP reissue has been printed on 180gm heavyweight vinyl, in a triple gatefold package. It also comes complete with a download code.

It was also the final full studio effort from the group, and what a way to bow out -- there was practically no resemblance to the trash glam flailers on Adolescent Sex anymore. Rather than repeat the sheer restraint on Gentlemen Take Polaroids, Tin Drum is an album of energy, Sylvian's singing still the decadently joyful thing it is, but the arrangements and performances tight, full, and active. The fusion of exquisite funk courtesy of Karn and Jansen's joined-at-the-hip rhythm section and a range of Asian music influences, from instrumentation to subject matter, combined with an even wider use of technological approaches to create the dramatic, sly songs on offer. Only the Talking Heads showed the same attempt at reach and variety at the time, at least in the Western rock world, but Japan arguably outstripped the New York band with its sheer sense of theatrical style. To top it all off, the band was more popular than ever, with "Ghosts," an appropriately haunting ballad notable for its utterly minimal arrangement, almost entirely eschewing beats for Barbieri's textures and Jansen's work on marimba, becoming a Top Ten hit in the U.K. The wound-up dancefloor art grooves of "The Art of Parties" and especially "Visions of China," the latter featuring what has to be Karnand Jansen's eternal highlight performance (check out Jansen's jaw-dropping drum break) were also notable efforts. Meanwhile, the evocation of Chinese culture in general continued with such songs as "Canton," a slightly martial, stately march with clear inspiration from the country's classical music tradition, and the concluding "Cantonese Boy." - Allmusic.

Mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road studios. Features the singles "The Art Of Parties" and "Ghosts". This record was cut using a specialist technique known as half-speed mastering. This artisan process results in cuts that have superior high frequency response (treble) and solid and stable stereo images. In short, a very high quality master that helps to create a very high quality record. In addition to this, we will release this album as a double 45 RPM half-speed mastered edition. This is the ultimate for high quality reproduction as the faster the replay speed of the record, the higher the potential quality. Also, the shorter side times allow the level recorded to the master lacquer discs to be increased thereby improving the signal to noise ratio.

First in the series is the NYC duo's game-changing debut "Paid In Full", a perfect example of Eric B's break-fuelled, lo-fi beats and scratch prowess and Rakim's revolutionary flow. Though the mighty and mega title track may be the stand out track here (crossover classics don't come much better), the boombox fire of "I Ain't No Joke", slow and sludgy "My Melody" and neck-snapping groove of "I Know You Got Soul" would be standouts on any other record.

The major label massive come through with something for the heads here, hooking us up with f-f-f-fresh reissues of Eric B & Rakim's four iconic studio albums. A year after the Long Island duo made their debut with the iconoclastic "Paid In Full", they returned with another full length "Follow The Leader". Eric B's beats are tougher, tighter and more developed, still break driven but bearing the same aggressive sample style as contemporaries Public Enemy. Rather than a study in biting, Eric makes the style his own, and throws down the gauntlet to any beatmakers with the diverse and dope instrumental cuts on offer. Fearless on the mic, Rakim put down a major marker for his future GOAT credentials with a frankly flawless lyric sheet. Dark and heavy shit from the heart of NYC!

Their 1992 swansong "Don't Sweat The Technique" came out to diminished fanfare back in the day, overshadowed by the creative differences which would quickly put pay to any further collaborations. The beautiful gift of hindsight has righted that wrong though, and "Don't Sweat The Technique" is now widely regarded by the hip hop heads as the duo's finest. Hard hitting and jazzy, the beats are more refined, defined and developed while Rakim's lyricism is off the fucking hook. I could wax lyrical about his hot lyricism all day, but just check out "The Punisher", "Casualties Of War" or "Know The Ledge" and have you lid flipped. A total masterpiece.

Double LP gold here, The Beastie Boys finest fifteen tracks throughout their incredible career. This record features some of the best tunes such as ‘Fight For Your Right’ and ‘An Open Letter to NYC’ but is filled to the brim with all the best of beasties. The Beasties consistent 'triple trouble' MC style is the thread that runs through each track here, creating cohesion to this whole LP, which presents us with a great overview of their career so far.

The tales of good love, bad love, uppers and downers are all there, yet there's an energy to them which surely comes from the man and his band being back from the brink, enjoying what they do best."

Even from the very first 'wikka', anyone on the planet can spot the classic theme from Shaft. Creative juices in full flow, the mighty Isaac Hayes penned a Blaxploitation theme so funky, fresh and orchestrally superior that it seized control of the collective pop consciousness with a vice-like grip. But if you look and listen beyond the ubiquitous title, Hayes delivers four sides of melodic and conscious mood music, only rivaled by Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" for the genre's top spot. The contemplative groove of "Bumpy's Lament" found favour with Mobb Deep and Dr Dre, "Ellie's Love Theme" did the trick for Biggie Smalls while "Do Your Thing" prompted Big Daddy Kane to get super smooth. Each and every track is worth a mention, especially the breezy soul jazz sway of "Cafe Regio's", but rather than hear me wax lyrical, you should just cop a load of this wax - Black Moses in full effect!

Remastered re-issue of the 1994 double album by experimental electronica group The Future Sound of London. Although slightly lost in the hyped-up murk of the mid 90s, with time, it has become their best-known album and is considered to be an important and influential classic of avant-garde electronic music. It sounds timeless, and could well have been released this week. Using unique and enthralling keyboard sounds, pad presets or ambient washes FSOL create an exotic and otherworldly collage; existing somewhere between the stars and a deserted tropical island. Sprawling, languid, and unhurried, I'm sure this made a brilliant companion to the permo-comedown from all those high end gary's available at the time.

"Hot Sauce Committee Part Two" is the eighth and final studio album by the the one and only Beastie Boys, originally released on April 27, 2011. Where 2004's "To The 5 Boroughs" utilised stripped back production and powerful lyricism in a post 9/11 love letter to NYC, Hot Sauce Committee mixes live instrumentation and samples into the kind of soupy production first unleashed on the world with "Pass the Mic" and furthered with songs like "So What'cha Want" and "Sure Shot". These songs are dense with sound effects and heavy on the bottom end, and the vocals are processed with a mixture of distortion and EQ that obscures the details of their rapping and the content of their lyrics but also gives the music a bit of snarl. The release was supported by four singles – "Lee Majors Come Again", "Too Many Rappers" featuring Nas, "Make Some Noise", and "Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win" featuring Santigold.

Six years after "Hello Nasty", an older, wiser and entirely essential Beastie Boys re-emerged with "To The 5 Boroughs", a passionate love letter to NYC written in the wake of 9/11. As usual they deliver their irrepressible tag team rhymes, mixing up celebrations of their home city with witty put downs of George W and his policies, and of course their usual stoopid bragging, but this time dropping them over stripped down backing tracks, that give a nod to the past (check "Triple Trouble" with its Sugarhill Gang samples), while obviously being influenced by hip hop and R'n'B's more recent electronic styles.  Four singles were released from the album, "Ch-Check It Out", "Triple Trouble", "An Open Letter to NYC", and "Right Right Now Now", but it's very difficult to choose a favourite on this career highpoint.

American bands have never gotten in the habit of their British counterparts, who tend to release lots of extended singles filled out with not-meant-for-prime-time experimentations. If the Beasties had gotten into that habit, this would be their B-side compendium. Originally released through the Beastie Boys' French fan club, The In Sound From Way Out! is a collection of the group's funky instrumentals from Check Your Head and Ill Communication, with a couple of new tracks thrown in. The Beasties have a flair for loose, gritty funk and soul-jazz, and the stuttering, greasy keyboards of Money Mark give the music an extra edge - he helps make the music sound as authentic as anything from the early '70s.

One of the most enigmatic figures in pop music history Scott Walker (nee Scott Engel) first saw massive success in England with his band The Walker Brothers in 1965. Not really brothers, nor were they British, the trio left Hollywood seeking fame in England, and they found it here for a time with their particular brand of orchestrated pop.

Following the groups demise in 1967 Walker set our to pursue solo stardom in perhaps the most peculiar way possible, with over-the-top baroque pop songs owing more to his idol Jacques Brel, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra than they did to the Beatles or the Stones.

This is his first solo LP from 1967 and features three of his own compositions along with covers of songs by Brel, Tim Hardin, and the Brill Building team of Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. A true original.
