DJ Lucky Teklife

Triple 7

Following up his magical singles Rupees, Las-Vegas by way of Chicago underdog DJ LUCKY brings us his debut album Triple 7. Featuring fellow colleagues such as DJ Manny, Taso, and Weezy, this LP compiles work from a rather undocumented member of the Teklife family. These 10 tracks are pure modern footwork tailor-made for the dancers, but with tons of rave-friendly sonics in-between.

Opening things up with the ethereal DJ Manny collaboration War, Lucky sets the tone for the rest of the album with its thick, moody atmosphere. At times the vibe here is soulful, other times it’s eerie, often it’s all of the above. There’s rolling jungle breaks with a hip-hop lean on tracks like G.B.G.W., and there’s lots of sinister battle dramatics like those on Hit Da Flo. The synth work is masterfully crafted throughout the album, with lots of trance-inducing arpeggios like those on GAWD, and of course the drums are relentless, with huge swooshing snares bombarding your ears on Lost Without U. It’s a perfect soup pot of the emotions that make footwork great: dark and intimidating, yet full of passion. Triple 7 is a great introduction to a member of the footwork community that some fans might have slept on. Lucky grew up in the culture both making music and dancing, and this album proves how crucial his sound is to the art form. It’s uncut floor burning music sure enough to cause lots of trouble in the circle and beyond.

LImited copies.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: A true rarity from the hardcore continuum. Visioning the transition that would later meld hardcore and techno - these up-all-nite warehouse rockets would quite literally twist peoples melons inside out when dancers first heard their indignant clatter. They still say a big F*CK OFF to the establishment and their infamous criminal justice bill.

    Christine And The Queens

PARANOiA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE - TRIPLE DISC EDITION

Christine and the Queens return with new album PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE, released on 9 June via Because Music.

The record’s first single, ‘To be honest’ is an ethereal, synth-driven first glimpse into the French phenomenon’s most personal and ambitious album to date. PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE is written, performed and produced by Christine and the Queens, with co-production by Mike Dean (Lana Del Rey, Beyonce) and guest appearances from 070 Shake and Madonna.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: The wonderful Christine And The Queens make a very welcome return for the spellbinding new LP, 'PARANOiA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE'. With hefty synths, gorgeous cinematic intensity and a flawless ear for melody, Chris has continues the legacy he laid out so perfectly in the previous slices of emotional synth-pop genius. It's rich, deep and infinitely rewarding.

      Aesop Rock & Homeboy Sandman

      Triple Fat Lice

Both Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman are regarded as top tier lyricists known for pushing the envelope of creativity in their writing, while covering a wide range of topics and moods. However, sometimes things are inherently simple. Take for example, the origin of their collaboration, born from a mutual appreciation for each other as artists which became fully realized when Aesop Rock invited Homeboy Sandman to join him on tour in 2015. Traveling the country together, they built a connection beyond the music, resulting in a friendship that led to recording a few songs together, and before they knew it, the “Lice” project had been conceived – a three record series concluding with this, “Triple Fat Lice”.

Initially released in 2017 as a free direct download, followed by an extremely limited vinyl pressing sold exclusively on tour, Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman's “Triple Fat Lice” is finally available to fans everywhere. The third in a series of EP releases, “Triple Fat Lice” features production from Cohen Beats, Oh No, Ben Boogz (of 2 Hungry Brothers), Quelle Chris and M Slago. The original cover art was designed by renowned illustrator Jeremy Fish.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Concluding the tryptic on a lyrical high, Homeboy and Aesop collude on subject matter such as parent's disappoint, food, pandemic woes and a whole host of other quick-witting, sharp observations. Two of the most unique voices in the rap game; the production is deliciously old skool - with whiffs of boom-bap mixed in with experimental sample usage and skeletal instrumentals. A masterpiece!

      Butcher Brown

Butcher Brown Presents Triple Trey Featuring Tennishu And R4ND4ZZO BIGB4ND

Butcher Brown Presents Triple Trey Featuring Tennishu and R4ND4ZZO BIGB4ND, deconstructs big band jazz and reshapes it in the band’s eclectic image. The album sounds nothing like your grandparents’ 45s. Randazzo adapted Tennishu’s rap beats for Butcher Brown and 10 other Richmond musicians, turning them into bold suites. Tennishu finds new pockets of rhyme amidst party-starting originals, while the ensemble delivers a blend of contemporary genre-smashing injected into the past.

        The Membranes

Everyone's Going Triple Bad Acid, Yeah!: The Complete Recordings 1980-1993

Seminal Blackpool post-punk band’s entire early discography in one box set. The Membranes came to embody a style of abrasive, off-kilter post-punk music which might best be described by the motto “Death To Trad Rock” (later the title of a book and compilation CD by head Membrane John Robb). They have influenced a vast range of bands across the world, attracting heavy fans such as Big Black (Steve Albini), Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore and Butthole Surfers. The Membranes are the first band that Steve Albini worked with outside Big Black. Includes their five albums recorded for various labels across the 1980s (on Criminal Damage, Creation, Constrictor, In Tape, etc.) as well as all their singles, B-sides, EPs and extra tracks. Boasts a mere 99 tracks, most of which appear on CD for the first time, from their contribution to the Blackpool Rox EP in 1980 right through to their final recordings for the band’s original incarnation in the early 1990s. 26 page booklet includes sleeve-notes written by John Robb (now an established author and journalist, behind the Louder Than War magazine), alongside a wealth of visual material. After an extended hiatus began in the early 90s, the band reformed in 2012 and released their first new album in 20 years, “Dark Matter/Dark Energy” on Cherry Red in 2015 (CDBRED661).A brand new Membranes album is due out on Cherry Red in autumn 2017

It’s morning in Detroit: Organic cafes are sprouting up where liquor stores once dominated the landscape, cycle lanes now line even the most impassable roadways, and an army of aimless (white) youth, the shock troops of gentrification, are living out their wild west fantasies in maximum comfort and self-satisfaction. The names of their wifi networks tell the story: “homesteader,” “eastside settler,” “landgrabba.” They come for a reason: a cheap practice space in other people’s misery.

True to their contrarian instincts, Tyvek won’t give any quarter to the well heeled (and no doubt well intentioned) drum circle that has invaded their hometown, but they also can’t help but feel a certain optimism. Their third album, On Triple Beams, picks up where the blistering proto-hardcore of the Nothing Fits record leaves off, but doesn’t tarry long in familiar zones. The melodies open up into a much more spacious musical headspace, channeling unexpected positivity on tracks like “Wayne County Roads,” “Say Yeah” and “Returns.” Produced by Fred Thomas, On Triple Beams is hard and direct but it doesn’t pummel. Likewise, the lyrics ain’t pedantic. Searing punk rock is still the order of the day, and the tunes are just bangin’. And in case there’s any doubt: these are tunes in a major way—the songwriting chops are on this album are completely out of place in the 2012 bumper crop of plastic platters.

Welcome to the strange path that Tyvek has trod for the past eight years: for every step forward, they take two steps to the side for good measure. This trip won’t be spoiled by the crass opportunism of the Nu-Detroiters: they have to keep it real. Sometimes the new jacks just gotta get put in check, and obviously Mommy and Daddy weren’t ever going to do it. In the midst of so much change, Tyvek is energized by the chaos of a city in flux, the crucial moments that make up everyday life, and the unfiltered reality of sensory experiences. Hear the sound and jump all around.

          Opossom

Electric Hawaii - Limited Triple 7" Edition

Triple deluxe 7” pack on 3 different coloured vinyl.

After eight years fronting New Zealand's acclaimed "trouble gum art punks" The Mint Chicks, Kody Nielson unveils a new project Opossom with the captivating album Electric Hawaii. Following a June release in Australia and New Zealand on Create/Control, the album will be released in the rest of the world via Fire Records in August.

The Mint Chicks chapter in Kody's career closed with the band splitting time between their American base in Portland OR and hometown Auckland. Brother Ruban formed a new band, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Kody began producing diverse projects including Bic Runga's recent album and Auckland punk up-and-comers, The DHDFD's.

Electric Hawaii presented a new challenge, an album written and performed with just a little help from others - Bic Runga lending a vocal while Kody's father Chris Nielson (a regular Mint Chicks collaborator) plays trumpet. The rest comes directly from the brain, hands and heart of Kody. Home-written, recorded and mixed by himself with just the final mastering courtesy of Howie Weinberg, Electric Hawaii is a unique beast - it is not the singer-songwriter solo album of a former punk rock band singer. It's a further exploration of Kody's musical journey into a lively, engaging world of carefully layered sonic layers of light and dark. It's an album about love, DIY, drugs and freedom. And why end up Opossom? The mental escape from daily life during the creation of "Electric Hawaii" produced Kody's nocturnal instinctive animal... feisty, vicious and enigmatically cute.

The new direction and new sounds incorporate what Kody terms as an overt attempt to add some of his personal Polynesian background to his blend of beatnik psychedelica made from out of context genres, surf rock to the Velvet Underground, modern and ancient electronica and jazz.

            Northstar

            Pollyanna

Brand New labelmates Northstar's follow up to "Is This Thing Loaded" is a considerable improvement on it's already pretty decent predecessor. Blazing and intricate punk / pop / emo rock crowned by Nick Torres' subtle, passionate vocal style and eloquent, pointed lyrics.

              Death Threat

              For God & Government

Death Threat are well pissed off with 'the System' and they're pretty angry with everyone else too. This is brutal hardcore that has that new American Nightmare, Buried Alive heaviness. Formed by former members of Hatebreed and His Hero Is Gone.

                Where Fear And Weapons Meet

                Unstoppable

This band have previously released a full length on Revelation and appeared on many hardcore compilations. This cheapish mini album is aimed at raising their profile and has some strong songs that might do just that.
