    Arooj Aftab

    Night Train

Grammy®-winning Arooj Aftab is set to release Night Reign, the follow up to her critically-acclaimed album Vulture Prince, on 31 May on Verve Records. Aftab makes the night the focus of this nine-song collection. Entirely in her own voice and through her own story, she delves into the multifaceted, bold and fascinating realm that comes to life after dark. Some nights are for falling in love, some are for solitude and introspection, some are to be annoyed at a forced social gathering–and so go the stories of Night Reign. The album features new friends like Cautious Clay shredding on flute, Moor Mother echoing Aftab’s sentiment of how cruel the world is, and Chocolate Genius aka Marc Anthony Thompson lending his tender sensibilities to a song about being grounded. Longtime collaborators Petros Klampanis and Maeve Gilchrist also continue their musical partnership as core members of Arooj’s musical family. The resulting new music again showcases Aftab’s striking ability to build a thing of beauty from distinct elements. Night Reign is a clear departure from tradition or the reinvention of ancestral music. It’s a reflection of Aftab’s 15 years living in New York City and her unapologetic commitment to stay true to herself. With open-heartedness, candour and wit, Aftab lets us get even closer to her.

      Ray Martell

She Caught The Train / Cora

This is the first re-release on 7 inch vinyl single of the early Reggae classic “She Caught The Train” by Ray Martell released in 1970 on the Trojan sublabel Joe in the UK and later covered by UB40 in 1983. This original song, a huge hit, has featured on many compilations but has never been repressed as a single, until now… It was initially released with the track “Tea House From Emperor Roscoe” by Dice The Boss on the B side. On this release, Harlem Shuffle chose to showcase a super rare Ray Martell song, the gorgeous “Cora” initially released on Attack in 1970.

Jackie Mittoo And The Soul Brothers

Last Train To Skaville - 2023 Edition

“Jackie Mittoo was one of the great names in Jamaican music, manning the keyboards for the Skatalites, the Soul Vendors, and Sound Dimension - three of the greatest house bands of the 60s (and I mean anywhere, not just in Jamaica).” - Pitchfork

New one-off press transparent green double vinyl edition of Soul Jazz Records’ classic Jackie Mittoo and The Soul Brothers ‘Last Train To Skaville’, featuring classic tracks recorded at Studio One.

Jackie Mittoo is one of the most important artists in the history of Jamaican music. As founding member of the legendary Skatalites, as in-house arranger / producer at Studio One and as a solo artist in his own right, leading groups such as The Soul Brothers, Sound Dimension and Soul Vendors.

These classic and rare recordings were made in the mid-1960s at Studio One. The Soul Brothers bridged the gap between Ska and the arrival of Rocksteady mixing it all up with Funk, Jazz and Latin styles.

The Soul Brothers recorded at Studio One between 1965-1967, the transitionary period between Ska and Rocksteady where the music was a mixture of Funk, Latin and Jazz sometimes with a reminder of Ska and the hint of Rocksteady.

The Soul Brothers were born in 1965 out of the ashes of the great Skatalites. The new group featured ex-Skatalites members Jackie Mittoo, Roland Alphonso, Johnny Moore and Lloyd Brevitt. By the end of the year the group were up and running, releasing countless addictively catchy singles and two albums, as well as becoming the new house band at Studio One, following the demise of The Skatalites.

            Afflecks Palace

The Only Light In This Tunnel Is The Oncoming Train

Manchester band Afflecks Palace return with their sophomore LP.

Produced by J. Fender, Afflecks Palace vocalist and Spirit Of Spike Island label boss said “This album is an ode to escapism from the modern day obsession with superficial status, wealth and success - propelled by social media F.O.M.O (fear of missing out)”.

If you're not from round here, the band are named after the legendary shopping emporium which is just down the road from us. Afflecks Palace was, and still is, a mecca for all things "alternative"( a word from back in the day!) and rose to fame during the heady days of Madchester. It was also  home to the Identity clothing shop which became famous for it's legendary "On  The Sixth Day God  Created Manchester" t-shirts.

Afflecks Palace are real music magpies, in the best possible sense. They've taken the energy and attitude of '89 and created super melodic guitar gems that tip their (bucket) hat to The Stone Roses, Inspirals and the like, as well as plundering classic pop from the 60s via Britpop and right  through to the present day. In doing so they've managed to create their own euphoric, hook filled sound.

The new soundtrack to dancing til the sun comes up and weekends mooching around the Northern Quarter, thers's just a vibe and spirit around this band that's gonna be difficult to resist.

              STAFF COMMENTS

Andy says: Like a greatest hits of Manchester music, all rolled up into one jangling, baggy, indie-pop nugget, this band are gonna go far.

              Jorja Chalmers

              Midnight Train

Jorja Chalmers enjoys a quiet life. The Australian born mother of two lives in Margate, the Kent coastal town that is turning into something of a cultural hub. Yet there’s another, shadow version of Jorja Chalmers, one that resides in a liminal realm; a saxophonist & composer, a brooding, vampiric, twilight soul who yearns for some sense of aesthetic transformation.

New album ‘Midnight Train’ comes close to severing the two. Constructed during the long winter lockdown, Jorja would put her kids to bed before closing the door in the spare room, building lengthy, undulating passages of cinematic terror, patching together European art-pop glamour with outsider electronics. It’s composed, intense, & challenging – but it’s also utterly exhilarating.

“I feel incredibly proud of this album,” she says. “It feels like a life’s work squeezed into one space. It feels like I’m saying something.”

                John Coltrane

Blue Train - The Complete Masters

To mark the 65th anniversary of the album’s recording, Blue Train will be released in two special editions on September 16 as part of Blue Note’s acclaimed Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series.

A 1-LP mono pressing of the original album will be presented in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket, while the 2-LP stereo collection Blue Train: The Complete Masters will include a second disc featuring seven alternate and incomplete takes, none of which have been released previously on vinyl, and four of which have never been released before on any format. The Complete Masters comes with a booklet featuring never-before-seen session photos by Francis Wolff and an essay by Coltrane expert Ashley Kahn. Both Tone Poet Vinyl Editions were produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI.

Blue Train: The Complete Masters will also be released as a 2-CD set and digital collection.

“Few studio experiences I’ve had can compare with the thrill of listening to the original master tapes—mono, stereo and alternate takes—of Blue Train,” says Harley. “I consider these two new versions the definitive editions of this masterpiece performance by John Coltrane.”

Cindy & The Playmates / Paul Kelly

Don't Stop This Train / The Upset

Cindy & The Playmates, led by Cindy Redd (later of The Voices) and backed by Wanda Cunningham and Manesbia Pierce, deliver an upbeat funky floor filler. Copies go for between £300-400 pounds for this storming and evocative fist-clenching gem which builds dramatically with strings and an emotive lead vocal. Cut with Paul Kelly’s ‘The Upset’, which was the B side of his second single for Lloyd Records, the vehicle for Willie Clark’s Florida-based productions. A monster sound with a grinding funky backdrop providing the perfect foil for Kelly’s aching vocal; the chorus break is a guaranteed spine-tingling moment. Copies currently go for around £250 if you can find one.

                    STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Catchy and bright, funky floor fillers from yesterday, earnestly repressed by your good friends at Deptford Northern Soul Club who should be awarded a medal for their services to soul.

                    Warren Ellis

This Train I Ride: Original Soundtrack

Invada Records release Warren Ellis’ score to ‘This Train I Ride’.

The Australian musician (Dirty Three, Bad Seeds, Grinderman) has scored a number of high-profile films (‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’, ‘Hell or High Water’, ‘The Road’) and his latest score is for ‘This Train I Ride’, a documentary film directed by Arno Bitschy.

The score is pressed on black vinyl and comes in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with the record itself housed in a double sided printed inner sleeve featuring liner notes by Warren Ellis and Brian Eno. Digital download card included.

“My idea was to record, collate and produce the music on trains, in the spirit of the women in this documentary. Brian was so encouraging with this approach and told me about a train journey he had taken in the 80’s with no fixed destination. Over the next month I sat with my computer, loops, iPhone, Reface DX synthesiser and forgotten ideas and composed the music on the Metro and Eurostar and in various hotels while working on Ghosteen. I would send the pieces to Arno from the train, or wherever I was located, and he edited them into the film.” - Warren Ellis

The film tells the story of women hopping freight trains around America. The film follows the life-journeys of these women living on the fringe in a rapidly changing country, in their quest for identity, freedom and finding their place in the world.

                      Manuela Iwansson

Strangers On A Train / Blank Surface

Manuela Iwansson is a force of nature. Beginning as vocalist in now-defunct Swedish punk group Terrible Feelings, Iwansson's solo music harnesses the doomed romance of early 80s post-punk with a leather-bound flourish of late-70s hard-as-nails rock music. No one really believes in Rock 'n' Roll any more, not in these times of eroded faith and disillusionment but we still believe in the redeeming power of the night. Manuela Iwansson's music soundtracks the drama of the nocturne; grimy bars that breathe acrid smoke like veils over lovers parting, the paranoia of the illicit, the thrill of darkness, the transformative power of holding hands against the storm, doomed and righteous. Strangers on a Train surges forward on a taut post-punk beat and aching Cult-like guitar riff, Iwansson's narrator lamenting an ending, stations whirring past her field of vision. The chorus feels like a stadium of fists held aloft in unison, belying the cloying tale, perhaps, of an awkward break up. It's an unabashed anthem caught between leather and lace.

On the flip, Blank Surface is a bona fide AA track. Tight drums and an elastic bassline make the song feel like a lost 80's goth pop single, Iwansson's lyrics feel like the self dissolving into a thrilling melancholy, the narrator's very selfhood evaporating with the dry ice. Much of Blank Surface reminds the listener of The Cure mixed with a kind of DIY stadium rock rendered with the perfect charm by Iwansson's vocal performance, a tool which manages to sing of vulnerability with an enviable confidence. Rock n Roll is dead, good riddance; we're creatures of the night.

This 1962 recording represents Oscar Peterson at his most commercially accommodating, yet his trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen never fails to swing. The program includes such familiar melodies as the title track (which began life as Duke Ellington's "Happy Go Lucky Local"), "Georgia on My Mind," and "The Honeydripper." With the notable exception of the gospel-like original "Hymn to Freedom," most of the tracks clock in at around three minutes.

                            John Coltrane

Blue Train - Remastered Vinyl Edition

"Blue Train" is John Coltrane's only collection of sides as a principal artist for Blue Note. The album is packed with sonic evidence of Coltrane's innate leadership abilities. He not only addresses the tunes at hand, but also simultaneously reinvents himself as a multifaceted interpreter of both hard bop as well as sensitive balladry - touching upon all forms in between. The personnel on "Blue Train" is arguably as impressive as what they're playing. Joining Coltrane (tenor sax) are Lee Morgan (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Kenny Drew (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). The triple horn arrangements incorporate an additional sonic density that remains a trademark unique to both this band and album. Of particular note is Fuller's even-toned trombone, which bops throughout the title track as well as the frenetic "Moments Notice". Other solos include Paul Chambers' subtly understated riffs on "Blue Train" as well as the high energy and impact from contributions by Lee Morgan and Kenny Drew during "Locomotion". The track likewise features some brief but vital contributions from Philly Joe Jones - whose efforts throughout the record stand among his personal best. Of the five pieces that comprise the original "Blue Train", the Jerome Kern / Johnny Mercer ballad "I'm Old Fashioned" is the only standard; in terms of unadulterated sentiment, this version is arguably untouchable. Fuller's rich tones and Drew's tastefully executed solos cleanly wrap around Jones' steadily languid rhythms. Without reservation, "Blue Train" can easily be considered in and among the most important and influential entries not only of John Coltrane's career, but of the entire genre of jazz music as well.

Blue Note President Don Was says, “Two years ago, we began remastering the jewels of the Blue Note catalogue in hi-def resolutions of 96k and 192k. In order to develop a guiding artistic philosophy for this delicate endeavor, we donned our lab coats, ran dozens of sonic experiments and carefully referenced every generation of our reissues. Ultimately, we decided that our goal would be to protect the original intentions of the artists, producers and engineers who made these records and that, in the case of pre-digital-era albums, these intentions were best represented by the sound and feel of their first-edition vinyl releases. Working with a team of dedicated and groovy engineers, we found a sound that both captured the feel of the original records while maintaining the depth and transparency of the master tapes... the new remasters are really cool!

While these new versions will become available in digital hi-def, CD and Mastered for iTunes formats, the allure of vinyl records is WAY too potent to ignore. This year, Blue Note - along with our friends at Universal Music Enterprises - is launching a major 75th Anniversary vinyl Initiative that is dedicated to the proposition that our catalogue should be readily available, featuring high quality pressings and authentic reproductions of Blue Note's iconic packaging. Although this program begins in celebration of Blue Note's 75th Anniversary, our catalog runs so deep that we will faithfully be reissuing five albums a month for many years to come!”

                              The Ethiopians

                              Freedom Train

The Ethiopians are one of the great vocal groups to come out of Jamaica. Singing songs of life and times as they found them, themes that resonated with the people of the Island that made them such a treasured group. Lenard Dillon, the founding member of the Ethiopians, began his singing career at Clement ‘Coxonne’ Dodd’s Studio One. Initially he recorded under the name of Jack Sparrow, and backed by the Wailers, cutting ‘Ice Water’ and ‘Suffering In The Land’. Under The Wailers encouragement, he went on to form his own vocal group. Recruiting singers Stephan Taylor and Aston 'Charlie’ Morris to become The Ethiopians. They cut ‘Live Good’, ‘Why You Gonna Leave Me Now’ and ‘Owe Me No Pay Me’. Although receiving favourable response, Aston Morris decided to leave the band and the remaining pair carried on and cut ‘I’m A Free Man’ and ‘Don Dead Already’ and ‘For You’. On meeting contract builder Leebert Robertson who had recently returned to live in Jamaica,  he said he wanted to get into the music business, a session was booked for Treasure Isle Studios. The session produced their seminal ‘Train To Skaville’ track, which became an immediate hit in Jamaica and in the UK, when in 1967 it reached number 40 in the charts. They also cut ‘Engine 54’, which became the title of their debut album.

Its follow up ‘I Need You / Do It Sweet’, did not fare so well and the band moved over to Sonia Pottinger’s stable, where they cut ‘The Whip / Cool It Amigo’ which revived their fortunes and proved another big hit for the band. Two more hits followed ‘Stay Loose Mama’ and ‘The World Goes Ska’, after which the band decided to return to a trio, adding Melvin ‘Mellow’ Reid to the line up. The band now hit another run of successes with producer JJ Johnson ‘Everything Crash, ’Gun Man’, ‘Hong Kong Flu’ and ‘The Selah’. Many hits followed leading the band to work with a variety of Jamaican producers. Such tracks as ‘I Want To Be a Better Man, ‘ Conquering Lion’, ’Fire A Mus Mus’ Tail’, and the timeless ‘Reggae Hit The Town’ to name a few. Two albums ‘Reggae Power’ (1969) and ’Woman Capture Man’ (1970), pulled a lot of these tunes together. Sadly Taylor was killed in 1975 after been struck by a van in a road accident. Dillon returned to Port Antonio till 1977, when he was persuaded to return to Treasure Isle studios with producer Niney The Observer and cut the Rasta based album ‘Slave Call’. Additional members who joined for this album were Bro Fatty, Bro Ewing, Bro T, Mello and Hychi Dread. An album that showed all the Ethiopians magic had not been lost.

For this release Kingston Sounds have included the full ‘Slave Call’ set, alongside some of the band's early hits including the original version of ‘Train To Skaville’, ‘Engine 54’, the great and poignant ‘Everything Crash’, ‘Reggae Hit The Town’ and ‘The Selah’. An interesting set to remind us what a great group the Ethiopians really were.

                                Chris Smither

                                Train Home

Chris Smither is a fine singer, a superb finger-picker with an enviably clean sound who manages to make a sound that is remarkably like a slide guitar, he's hard to pigeohole a mix of blues, alt.country and latter day troubadour. "Train Home" presents seven new Smither originals ranging from the delicate melodies of "Outside In" and "Confirmation" to the bluesy stomp of "Call Time". The four cover songs are wonderfully eclectic: highly original remakes of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" and Richie Furay's "Kind Woman" along with two long-time crowd-pleasers from his live shows, Mississippi John Hurt's "Candy Man" and Dave Carter's "Crocodile Man".

                                  The Movielife

Forty Hour Train Back To Penn

Total stormer of an album from New York's The Movielife who are fast becoming one of the best bands on the heavier side of the emocore scene. Another impeccable Drive-Thru band too, the endless touring has paid dividens because this is tight as a gnat's ass and really rocks.

                                    Train

                                    Drops Of Jupiter

This San Francisco band with a penchant for the sort of sound popularised by the Black Crowes. The title track is the album's heart with swelling strings and chorded piano melody. Radio-friendly rock bands these days tend to be virtually the same as each other, but Train breaks out from the crowd and are worthy of your consideration.
