The Selecter

Too Much Pressure (40th Anniversary Edition) - 2024 Repress

The Selecter were one of the key bands of the ska revival in the late 70’s and one of the few racially and sexually integrated bands on the scene. Vocalist Pauline Black wrote about sexism, racism, and social issues. Their debut release was the AA side of The Specials single ‘Gangsters’ in the summer of 1979, which only consisted of Neol Davies and John Bradbury (of The Specials) before quickly forming a full band by the end of the year. Releasing their follow up single ‘On My Radio’ which reached No. 6 in the UK charts. Their debut album ‘Too Much Pressure’ was released in February 1980 and reached No. 5 in the UK charts. The album also included two further hit singles ‘Three Minute Hero’ and ‘Missing Words’.

2 dubs from the outstanding Arkology's Blueprint album - mixed by Aba-Shanti-I and first released on Positive Beat Records in 1994.

The two heavy steppers impress with great energy, bizarre chanting sounds and a deep vocal snippet by Ras T on "In the Valley Dub". The cutting snare drums
and crisp percussions of the "Reparation Dub" are virtually driving you forward, carried by bassline and melodies in a mid 90s Philip 'Fatis' Burrell style!"

This is the 2nd release from Arkology on Ace Tone records.

Too Much Too Young: The 2 Tone Records Story Rude Boys, Racism And The Soundtrack Of A Generation - RECORD SHOP EXCLUSIVE SIGNED EDITION

In 1979, 2 Tone exploded into the national conscience as records by The Specials, The Selecter, Madness, The Beat, and The Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born.

2 Tone was black and white: a multi-racial force of British and Caribbean island musicians singing about social issues, racism, class and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and took fight against right wing extremism.

The music of 2 Tone was exuberant: white youth learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae; and crossed with a punk attitude to create an original hybrid. The idea of 2 Tone was born in Coventry, masterminded by a middle-class art student raised in the church. Jerry Dammers had a vision of an English Motown. Borrowing £700, the label's first record featured 'Gangsters' by The Specials' backed by an instrumental track by the, as yet, unformed, Selecter. Within two months the single was at number six in the national charts. Dammers signed Madness, The Beat and The Bodysnatchers as a glut of successive hits propelled 2 Tone onto Top of the Pops and into the hearts and minds of a generation. However, soon infighting amongst the bands and the pressures of running a label caused 2 Tone to bow to an inevitable weight of expectation and recrimination.

Still under the auspices of Jerry Dammers, 2 Tone entered in a new phase. Perhaps not as commercially successful as its 1979-1981 incarnation the label nevertheless continued to thrive for a further four years releasing a string of fresh signings and a stunning endpiece finale in '(Free) Nelson Mandela'.

Told in three parts, Too Much Too Young is the definitive story of a label that for a brief, bright burning moment, shaped British culture.

Far over on the West Coast of the USA we find a room full of drum machines, samplers and keyboards. Hard at work is Israel 'Iz' Gravning aka Tone Scientist, who's been using this Seattle studio to produce genre-defying future music for more than 25 years.

Landing somewhere between Luke Vibert's Wagon Christ moniker, Pat Thomas' recently reissued "New Jazz Jungle" LP, Objekt's high-tek bass hybrids and a soundsystem friendly smattering of breaks and bass; Tone Scientist has conjured up something decidedly fresh but totally following the lineage of modern nightclub developments so as to sound natural and logical. An impressive double EP that skirts through numerous tempos and flavours, all with the dub woofers and a heavy sense of rhythm in mind. Recommended!

          STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: A more breaksy offering from Basic Moves and Tone Scientist who observes the early days hardcore, jungle and broken beat and re-packages the vibe for modern dancefloors. Plenty of bass across a jam packed double 12" pressed super heavy and nice for the DJs sticking two fingers up at the controller brigade.

          Kenny Burrell

Kenny Burrell - Tone Poet Series Edition

The first thing that strikes you about Kenny Burrell’s second Blue Note album, Kenny Burrell, is the cover, which features an illustration by Andy Warhol. The second is the striking music, which is drawn from four different sessions recorded in 1956 with the guitarist featured in a variety of settings.

            Jama Rico

Legendary Jamaican trombonist Rico Rodriquez was a key member of the 2Tone family, being a member of The Specials live line up as well as performing on many of their records including, of course, "A Message To You Rudy" along with releasing 2 LP's for the label in his own right.

It's testament to his musicianship that for this LP he gathered together an absolute who's who of Jamaican musicians from the time, including: Sly & Robbie, Ansell Collins, Tommy McCook, Cedric Brookes, Deadly Headley Bennet and Winston Wright.

                Bennie Maupin & Adam Rudolph

Symphonic Tone Poem For Brother Yusef

Strut present an exclusive collaboration between two jazz greats, Bennie Maupin and Adam Rudolph, on ‘Symphonic Tone Poem For Brother Yusef’, originally commissioned by the Angel City Jazz festival in Claremont, to mark the late, great Yusef Lateef’s 100th birthday on 9th October, 2020.

The album weaves a magical, meditative path across five movements, combining electronics, saxophone, voices and Rudolph’s wide palette of percussion from hand drums to thumb pianos and gongs. “I learned so much from Yusef about intervals,” explains Rudolph. “Greats like Yusef, Ornette Coleman and Coltrane stopped using traditional harmonic forms and introduced systems of working with intervals. So, there was an intellectual process with this album, but mostly it was just intuitive. What I love about intuition is that it erases its own tracks behind it. On the 5th Movement of this album, I was working around a major seventh but 90% of what happened was instinctive. It is a unique moment; you can’t go back and recreate it.”

Both artists bring unparalleled experience to the project. Detroit’s Bennie Maupin is best known for his work with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew, Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters and Eddie Henderson. Chicago percussionist Adam Rudolph was Yusef Lateef’s percussionist for 20 years and has worked with many other jazz luminaries including Pharoah Sanders, Wadada Leo Smith and Don Cherry. His work with Mandingo Griot Society during the ‘70s and ‘80s and, more recently, leading Hu Vibrational and Go Organic Orchestra constantly break new ground in the use and context of percussion.
“Brother Yusef was a luminous being who continues to be an inspiration to so many of us,” continues Rudolph. “He was a great teacher, not only of music, but also of how to live as an artist and as a human being.”

‘Symphonic Tone Poem For Brother Yusef’ is released on LP, CD and digital. The album is mastered by Technology Works and cover art is by Nancy Jackson, based on a Lateef saying, "Have you noticed the leaves waving to you? It's okay to wave back.”

                  The Horrors

                  Against The Blade

New EP2 from The Horrors, off the back of EP1 'Lout'.

                    Faris Quote:
The Against the Blade EP is a further descent into chaos - about the freedom that comes with abandoning all hope, giving up control, and accepting that you will always be at odds with the world around you. There’s something about our recent writing that has felt really free and liberated, like being let off a leash - slightly ironic given the fact that lockdown forced us into certain ways of working. This almost feels like a new band now - a new beginning right in time for the apocalypse.

                    Rhys Quote:
Against the Blade is a visceral attack of the senses. A heavy, riff rocking beast. Once the ball started rolling with writing Lout I liked the idea of challenging the band to push all the song’s in as extreme a direction as possible. Against The Blade and Twisted Skin were both written in Southend on sea over lockdown, it’s the most DIY music we’ve ever made. The first demos were written in my bedroom and work continued in Joe’s little shipping container studio which overlooks the estuary. The only element recorded in an actual studio were the vocals as we even recorded.

Ghost Town - 40th Anniversary Half Speed Master

THE SPECIALS are one of the defining bands of the late 70’s/early 80’s along with Jerry Dammers iconic label Two Tone Records. They combined Jamaican ska and Rocksteady mixed with the energy of punk and launched a whole Ska Revival which paved the way for fellow likeminded bands Madness, The Beat and The Selecter to release their first singles.

Having had seven top 10 singles and two Gold albums over the course of two years, the band released Jerry Dammers’ Ghost Town in June 1981, backed by Lynval Goldings’ Why? and the Terry Hall penned Friday Night Saturday Morning. The beginnings of the song were written around the closure of the Larcano dancehall in Coventry, but also reflecting what was happening in other towns and cities with urban decay, unemployment and ongoing racial tensions of the period. Themes which are still relevant today.

The single, which was recently voted the second greatest UK single of all time by Alexis Petridis in the Guardian, reached Number One in the UK singles charts and stayed there for a further 3 weeks, becoming one of the biggest selling singles of 1981 and has remained one of the classic UK singles of all.

This 40th Anniversary Edition has been mastered and cut at half-speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios using the original production tapes for optimum audio quality.

                      The Specials

                      The Specials

The Specials were formed in Coventry in 1977.

True innovators, the band began the British ska revival craze, combining the highly danceable ska and rocksteadybeat with punk’s energy and attitude.
The Specials had seven consecutive UK Top 10 singles between 1979 and 1981, including the number 1 hits ‘Too Much Too Young’ and ‘Ghost Town’
The Specials’ landmark, 14-track-strong debut album ‘Specials’ (UK No.4, 1979), produced by Elvis Costello, declared their intentions loud and clear with a rare blend of furious energy and no-nonsense, hard-hitting lyrics.
This album has been digitally remastered from the original analogue stereo masters and the new vinyl cuts have been made using those new masters. Careful comparison was made to the first pressed copies of the original albums throughout the process to maintain the sound as the band had originally envisaged.

In essence a studio recording of their live set, the album comprises mostly originals with a few covers of ska classics thrown in for good measure, including their fabulous take on Dandy Livingstone's ‘A Message to You Rudy’, an equally stellar version of the Maytals' ‘Monkey Man’, and a sizzling take on Prince Buster's ‘Too Hot’.

Features: the vicious ‘Nite Klub’, with its unforgettable line, “All the girls are slags and the beer tastes just like piss”; ‘Blank Expression’, which extended the misery into unwelcoming pubs‘; ‘Concrete Jungle’, capturing the fear and violence that stalked the inner cities; the personal ‘It's Up To You’, a message to those who disliked the group and its stance, and a rallying cry for supporters; ‘Too Much Too Young’, showing the Specials' disdain for teen pregnancy and marriage; ‘It Doesn't Make It Alright’, delivering a heartfelt plea against racism, and the rocksteady-esque yearning of ‘You're Wondering Now’.

                        Old Apparatus

                        Compendium

The music of Old Apparatus carves its own niche, leading you by the hand into unknown territory, exotic and mysterious, but shot through with a sense of magic and wonder that always pulls it out of the horror it hints at. A low key audio-visual group, they’ve deliberately worked out of the limelight, and consequently released some of the most ambitious and beautiful electronic music of the last few years. Old Apparatus started life on Mala’s Deep Medi record label 2 or so years ago, releasing two highly praised singles that were some of the best sellers on the label, however they were an unconventional choice, sitting uncomfortably with the dancefloor aimed dubstep that the label was known for, as their beautifully crafted mix of drones, sculptured soundscapes and dub moved far beyond the rulebook, and their audio-visual live shows became renowned for their quality. In 2012, Old Apparatus launched a bid for independence with their own ‘Sullen Tone’ imprint to release their own projects and others. The first of these releases on the label were EPs that spanned the second half of the year, opening with the Derren EP before releasing a series of EPs from three separate members of the group. Compendium draws together the highlights of those EPs into a sequenced mix that draws the sheer drama out of the music, like contrasting scenes in a film, enabling the listener to pick out details in music and get lost in its generous sound world. Starting with Zimmer’s rising strings and watery hiss, rolling seamlessly into the far away shoegaze of Mernom and then the warm, woodblock and acoustic guitar 2-step of Derren. The mood switches up to the jungle atmosphere of Dourado, with hypnotising drums and a feeling of panic, before the chopped and screwed march of Lingle drops the mood down, the club-footed hip hop and ritualistic astral atmosphere of cauliroot, creates a mysterious ambience, before the album hones down into the bell-like melodies and sliding drums of boxcat. Chicago opens next with a bare piano and heartbeat thud, working out of the rainy atmospheres, the shimmering drones Octofish lead into the vast waves of Realise, ending the album on a powerful note.

                        El Rego

                        El Rego

El Rego is a true legend of African Soul Music. Here for the first time on album are 12 of his greatest recordings from the late 60s and early 70s hand-picked by Daptone Records.

Afro-soul collector / DJ Frank Gossner had spent years combing West Africa tracking down 45s by Theophile Do Rego (aka El Rego) before finally meeting him face to face in his home in Benin. From that relationship came this album. The music of El Rego varies astoundingly in style and rhythm: traditional rhythms of Benin played with modern instruments, John Lee Hooker-esque blues, Fela Kuti inspired afro-beat, afro-cuban claves, and straight-up James Brown style funk. However, there is a common musical thread that runs throughout. The music has a raw soulfulness and a unique flavor that can be attributed beyond the sound of Benin, to the sound of El Rego himself. There is a timelessness to the recordings that ties all of the traditions that inspire them directly to the grooves that were dominating the radios and jukeboxes of the early 70s. The record is teeming with breaking drums and twanging guitars, twisting basslines and undulating percussion. But most importantly. the rhythms are all crafted by a man that not only performed, but also owned nightclubs and had an intimate understanding of the importance of dancing.

                          Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

                          Soul Time!

"Soul Time!" is an exploration of  the full range of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings' dynamic sound through twelve songs handpicked by the Daptone Records gang, each one a precious exclusive.

The needle drops on "Genuine Pts. 1 & 2", a supercharged funk arrangement that evokes the late Godfather not only with the spirited syncopation of the Dap-Kings rhythms, but also with the raw power of Jones’ voice. "Longer And Stronger", written for Jones' 50th birthday, is a deep mid-tempo soul celebration of the strength and determination with which Sharon Jones has earned her long overdue success. The theme of empowerment pushes on through “He Said I Can”, an energetic stomper belted over an arrangement reminiscent of the Isley Brothers early-70s heyday, and “I’m Not Gonna Cry” brings us back to the raw funk intensity of "Genuine" with a squealing tenor solo and a fiery vocal. .

“What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?” kicks the second side off with a bang. This mid-tempo groove is accentuated by the conga work of the legendary Johnny Griggs of JB’s fame. And who says Christmas can’t be soulful? Jones et al. make it so over their sought after holiday exclusive, “Ain’t No Chimneys in the Projects”. Next is an energetic romp into Motown intensity with “New Shoes”, a walking-out-the door belter that picks up where "These Boots Were Made For Walking" left off. The record winds up with a deep laid back cover of Shuggie Otis’ psychedelic soul jam “Inspiration Information”.

From the first note to the last, "Soul Time!" confirms this band’s place at the head of the table as the world’s greatest funk and soul showband. 50 Shades Of Peng / Serato Control Tone

When Maddslinky released his debut album "Make Your Peace" in 2003, it radically influenced the fledgling musical mind of a then teenaged Oliver Jones, aka Skream. Fast forward a few years, and when Skream and Maddslinky crossed paths they knew they had to make a track together. No surprise then that there are big basslines involved and the tune blows up on the dancefloor. "50 Shades Of Peng" is taken from the upcoming "Make A Change" album. The track has already been getting constant spins by the likes of Benji B on BBC 1xtra and Mr Scruff on dubplate and now Tru Thoughts do the honorable thing and release the track on one side of 12" vinyl (cut at 45rpm of course).

The flipside features one of those handy Serato Control Tone things for you more computerised DJs out there.

                              Tone

                              Solidarity

Tone was formed in Washington DC in 1991, with the goal of creating dynamic instrumental music using a layered multiple electric guitar format. Three albums down the line, Tone return with "Solidarity", their most brooding and fierce document to date, an instrumental rock album with more vision than the career of most bands.
