The Year Of The Leopard - 2023 Reissue

"The Year Of the Leopard" confounds categories. If there's a traditional side to it, it's following the tradition of individual singer-songwriter albums which conjure and inhabit a genre which lasts just as long as the needle's in the groove. Produced by former Talk Talk member Paul Webb, Yorkston approached him after hearing his understated but enthralling work on "Out Of Season", Webb's Rustin' Man album with Beth Gibbons (Portishead). And what they've come up with is another warm, mellow, gentle folk album which could snuggle up nicely next to "Moving Up Country" and knocks his last LP into a cocked hat! Lovely.

    Tom Rapp

A Journal Of The Plague Year - 2023 Reissue

What a privilege to start a new record label with an album of such quality. As we're sure most of you will know, Tom was the front man of the legendary US psychedelic/folk band PEARLS BEFORE SWINE. Recording for the ESP label in the 60s, then moving to Reprise, PBS left us a legacy of strange, beautiful music. In the early 70s Tom went solo, recording more albums for Reprise and Blue Thumb. As a schoolkid he came third in a talent show in which fellow schoolboy, Bobby Zimmerman (yes, that Bobby Zimmerman), came fifth! He played gigs with Pink Floyd, Crazy Horse, Patti Smith and many more before calling time in 1976, and becoming a Civil Rights lawyer. Renewed interest in Tom and PBS in the late 90s led to him making some staggeringly good live appearances. Then in 1999 he released his first album for over 25 years. The prophetically titled 'A Journal Of The Plague Year'. Featuring appearances from Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang (of Galaxie 500 fame) and Masakai Batoh of Japanese band Ghost, came out on the British label Woronzow to great acclaim. This is the first ever reissue of 'Plague Year' and it comes with the original artwork and lyric insert, as a limited vinyl edition of 400 and a CD version of just 200. Tragically, Tom died in 2018 aged 70. It was a joy to count him as a friend. Blue Matter would like to thank Lynn Madison-Rapp & Ade Shaw for their help with making this reissue a reality.

Philadelphia-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Body Meat, aka Christopher Taylor, presents his new EP, ‘Year of the Orc’. These songs are a celebration of himself and other outsiders breaking the mould.

“The EP title is about having acceptance in myself,” Taylor explains. “I’m an orc, I’ve never been very popular, I don’t have a specific aesthetic or genre or anything. I’m cool with laying low and creating and I surround myself with people who believe the same thing. It’s me and my orcs taking over!”

Written and recorded in his apartment in Philadelphia, ‘Year of the Orc’ will, for many, be an introduction to an artist who stretches, re-configures and defies genre in a way that plays with atypical rhythmic structure with a breathless fluidity.

Taylor cites everything from “getting back into Boyz II Men” to the dense, glottal production of Jlin as touchstones while writing, and that deft balance of thick percussive undergrowth with hyperpop smarts is immediately apparent.

“Sifting through the wreckage of genre touchstones, Body Meat uses the musical language of right now to point toward possible futures.” - Pitchfork

“No two pummelling blips of Christopher Taylor’s sound alike” - The FADER

              Year Of The Spider

Year Of The Spider was written and recorded in Nashville with GRAMMY® Award winning Producer of the Year, Dan Auerbach, at his legendary Easy Eye Sound studio this past year, fronted by Shannon Shaw and Cody Blanchard on lead vocals. It is an endlessly vivacious, ebullient, and clever album from the kings and queen of the Bay Area garage punk scene. Fresh off of their supporting tours with the likes of The Black Keys and Greta Van Fleet, they returned to the studio with their unique vintage sound that incorporates wonderfully strange elements of doo-wop, classic R&B, garage psych and surf rock to produce this timeless gem from these perennial favourites.

Lucio Fulci directed this dystopian sci-fi epic in 1984. In 2072 the world is ruled by TV networks. Two of these networks are locked in a bitter rating battle and in finding more ways to outdo each other one of them decides to host a Roman centurion style battle to the death featuring convicted murderers fighting each other on motorcycles (wait is this a documentary?) As you would expect from Fulci it’s outrageous, silly, super entertaining and full of over the top violence. The score was composed by Maestro Riz Ortolani and here he delivers one of his most bombastic, striking (and fun) scores. Loaded with killer synth lines, chunky riffs and pounding synthetic drums.

BC35: The 35 Year Anniversary Of BC Studio

With members of Sonic Youth, Swans, White Hills, JG Thirlwell, Cop Shoot Cop, Live Skull reunion, Pop 1280, The Dresden Dolls, Alice Donut, Lubricated Goat, Sxip Shirley, Parlor Walls and many more!

BC35 refers to the weekend of performances and resulting album marking the 35 year anniversary of BC Studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Musicians were invited to participate by Martin Bisi, and were assembled by Genevieve Fernworthy into improv ensembles. There were also some long-awaited reunions. Recorded with a live audience comprised of sound pioneers, social deviants, and studio fans, these tracks were mixed and edited with care over several months by Martin Bisi and by veterans of the studio throughout the decades.

With a voice like daybreak, Nat Johnson sings with heartfelt lucidity about her descent into and out of a dark time. A northern chanteuse of strong vulnerability, ‘Neighbour of the Year’ is Johnson’s first solo endeavour, and earnestly speaks of woes and personal experiences which rapture in an emotionally tangible record. A “songstress, maverick, and fighter,” Johnson compels herself and her audience to aspire with honesty in melody. Her profound capabilities, both technically and in decorum, are why Johnson’s work is revered and admirable. A songwriter with clever articulation, no element is amiss in her artistry. The “circular” nature in which the songs physically manifest communicates how these seven tracks span in delicacy, and have helped Johnson pinpoint, examine and heal to find the silver lining. An annotation of self-discovery, Johnson doesn’t shy away from articulating difficulty or pain. ‘Neighbour of the Year’ is a record of exposure and solace, and is an exceptional solo debut for Johnson, who is a songstress of integrity, talent and insight.
