THE VISION

Random Factor's 'On The Air' EP is a hugely sought-after classic by those who know. It came on Ralph Lawson's ever-reliable 20/20 Vision and now, as it turns 25 years old, he has decided it is the right time to get it remastered and reissued. 'On The Air' is first up on this fine EP from Carl Finlow and it has serene synths that bring to mind Detroit techno soul over pulsing bass and slick drums. 'Lockdown' has a raw vocoder vocal over punchy drums and twitchy synth stabs and 'Undercurrent' is another weapon that has more than withstood the test of time as it bumps along on funky drums and is overlaid with more playful synth patterns. 'Disconnect' is a crunchy and 8-bit closer with pixelated synths and screwy acid lines. Superb.

Originally released in 2019, ‘Heaven’ served as a benchmark for what modern house music is. The essential record from Ben Westbeech and KON’s The Vision project dominated stages around the world, receiving support from a plethora of top house artists; Gerd Janson, Horse Meat Disco, The Blessed Madonna, Groove Armada and Eli Escobar to name just a few. Now Defected release a special 12” package featuring the most recently released remix from Groove Assassin, where he masterfully combined it with Supernova’s Jackin Mix of Kerri Chandler’s iconic ‘Hallelujah’ for a killer house cut. Also featured on the package is the original in all its glory, as well as Danny Krivit’s heralded edit and an edit from The Vision’s own KON.

The Vision

Far Away: 6 Songs Of Reggae & Dub Music

Emotional Rescue looks to the newly rebuilt but still very much culturally separate East and West Germany of the 1980s with this new EP. It's dub reggae through a post-punk and alternative lens by Hanover artists Felix Holter aka Dubvisionist. All these cuts have a very live, improvised feel because father way he worked from rhythms first and jammed endlessly before adding the vocals. They are taken from their 1987 release 10 Tracks Of Reggae & Dub Music which was inspired by the great Adrian Sherwood label On-U Sound label, and you can hear that clearly.

Cult American ambient label Past Inside The Present looks to New York City-based composer Christina Giannone for her new full length "Glazed Vision", which is pressed to nice heavy 160 gram transparent clear vinyl. This is her third full length following 2020's "The Faint" and a collaborative work also last year, and it is another development of her dark, heavy, drone fulled ambient landscapes. These are lo-fi, foggy tracks that hang in mid air and make you feel like you're doing the same as only the most subtle of shapeshifting chords brings a sense of motion. It is bleak yet beautiful and never less than hugely absorbing.

After Vox Populi!'s "Half Dead Ganja Music" and Frank Dommert's "Kiefermusik", we have a hand picked compilation by the Hamburg artist Maat. Maat is a solo project by Dorte Marth, who created two secretly powerful and underappreciated records in 1993. They were released on two labels (Dragnet, Dom Elchklang) run by Achim P. Li Khan, the co-founder of the Greatest Band On Eearth, H.N.A.S. Maat's musical pallette is at once, strikingly, a more dark and brooding occult version of Anima and Limpe Fuchs. One can hear classical music references much like Coil's Unnatural History, but played further, blurring the shadowy lines between sampling and virtuoso playing.

Maat's dark and glisteningly illustrated use of electronic drums, Pan-Asian arrangements, and classical styles, invent a private world where she uncovers and projects forth, a new and ancient female energy. Its almost as if she is orchestrating her pallette and shooting it through star-clusters beneath the world. Probably Typhonian Highlife's and 4th World Magazines greatest influence.

With such a wealth of releases behind him, it’s hardly surprising that Joker’s music escapes easy characterisation. Keen to avoid generic formalism, he has even publically distanced himself from being labelled  as just dubstep. It’s understandable, since his music runs deep with R&B, funk and soul influences combining with his trademark pounding bass wobbles and ascending crystalline synths. Also apparent is an affection for computer games; no more evident than on the Sega throwdown album track ‘Level 6 (Interlude)’.

Old fans will be pleased to know that trademark instrumentals are there in abundance, from the Vangelis inspired album opener (‘Intro’) to established classics ‘Tron’ and ‘My Trance Girl’, which showcase the muscular synths and sharp drum snaps for which he has become renowned to the warmth of the heady height of summer album closer, ‘The Magic Causeway’, performed with Ginz. These are complimented by a number of startling vocal collaborations that also show just how far his sound has come; with inspired contributions from fellow rising stars like Jessie Ware on the Radio 1 playlisted ‘The Vision (Let Me Breathe)’, Jay Wilcox on ‘Electric Sea’ and Silas from Turboweekend and William Cartwright on forthcoming singles, ‘Here Come The Lights’ and ‘On My Mind’. He also found the time to round up Buggsy, Shadz, Scarz and Double (KHK-SP) to record ‘Back In The Days’, the definitive Bristol track he’s been promising to make.

Fear Before The March Of Flames

    Art Damage

Formed in July 2002, Fear Before The March Of Flames have developed a distinctive sound, a head on collision of intricate song structures, shifting time signatures and an overall filthy temper to produce an intense and inventive blend of metal, post hardcore and crunching indie rock. Easy listening this is not. Takes up where At the Drive In, The Blood Brothers and Dillinger Escape Plan leave off and trashes them in the process.

      Time In Malta

      Alone With The Alone

The follow up to "A Second Engine", Time In Malta's excellent debut, sees them adopt a more aggressive and refined approach, with more brutal breakdowns, complex song structures and extended acoustic intros making for a singular hardcore sound. Todd Gullion's distinctive vocals are lower in the mix and are more effective for that, flowing effortlessly into the music. A very impressive, powerful release.

        Twenty Twenty Vision

        The Wonderfully Titled EP

This is great! Five tracks (the fifth is a bonus track only available on the first 100 copies), of understated indie-pop, with clever songs, pretty melodies and a hint of Elliott Smith style melancholy. Twenty Twenty Vision is Stockport singer songwriter Adrian Lomas, and if this release is anything to go by, he's set for big things.

          Give Up The Ghost

          Background Music

This debut full length from one of the most important bands in the contemporary hardcore scene. "Background Music"? It's anything but, in fact it's the sort of music that comes right up to you and pokes you in the eye, rips your arm off and clubs you with the bloodied stump. The band changed its name to Give Up The Ghost after the original American Nightmare, a band based outside of Philadelphia, objected to the use of their name and trademark. Wes Eisold has a voice from the primordial slime and Tim Cossar and Brian Masek use their guitars like lethal weapons. Oh boy they're nasty. It's fast-paced, heavy music with throaty vocals and intense, angry lyrics. A blend of traditional hardcore, punk and metal that takes no prisoners and expects no mercy.

            The Hope Conspiracy

            Endnote

The Hope Conspiracy's mix of explosive power, controlled chaos and unbridled aggression equals one hell of a din and their second album could seriously damage your health. Will appeal to fans of bands like American Nightmare, Boysetsfire and Converge.

              Converge

              Petitioning The Empty Sky

1995 and the storm clouds of doom start to Converge on the unsupecting boys in the pit.
