Poetry Of The Deed - 2024 Reissue

'Poetry of the Deed' is the third studio album by London-based singer-songwriter Frank Turner. Unlike Turner's previous solo albums, 'Poetry of the Deed' was rehearsed, arranged and recorded with his full band. This marked a significant change in the singer songwriters musical output, spawning the singles ‘Poetry Of The Deed’, ‘Try This At Home’ and ‘The Road’. The video for ‘The Road’ saw Frank play 24 shows in 24 hours.. The successes of the third album included further Radio 1 daytime playlists, sessions with Zane Lowe and headlining a sold out show at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire and a few months later, The Roundhouse, London, setting him firmly on the course we see him on today, as a headline act the world over. Dan The Drum, Ronnie Turner, Emma Noble

    JazzCazz

Social media blew up recently with footage showing Emma Noble debuting ‘JazzCazz’ with her 10 piece band at London’s ‘OMeara’, causing Ramrock’s switchboard to go into meltdown. But here is where the story begins….‘Jazzcazz’ is the musical lovechild of Jazz Funk, House and Rave DJ/promoter, Dan ‘The Drum’ Spalding, dance music DJ/producer Ronnie Turner and DJ/chanteuse, Emma Noble. The inspiration for this 100bpm Jazzer was triggered by Dan and Emma’s love for Coffee’s 1980 iconic disco cover of the original 1967 version of ‘Casanova’, sung by Ruby Andrews and penned by the mighty Jo Armstead, The ensuing trip down to Ronnie Turner’s studio brought the demo to life thanks to Ronnie’s masterful production and
Dan’s deft arrangement. Their genius decision to add Emma Noble’s exquisite vocal delivery was the absolute icing on the musical cake and with all the essential ingredients in place, ‘JazzCazz’ was born. The result is a track that could easily have been released on Blue Note in the 60’s and discovered by crate diggers in 2024. The trio’s cool, jazzy retro spin on Ruby and Coffee’s versions exudes timeless dance floor love - it's definitely ‘not all over, Casanova’.

From East End barrow boy to club nights on the Costas, Dan “The Drum” Spalding has deejayed alongside the likes of Norman Jay MBE, Dave Lee, Craig Charles, Brandon Block, Ashley Beedle and Huey Morgan to name but a few. Having spent his early years quite literally banging the drum for his beloved Spurs, the name stuck and so did his love for all things with a beat. Immersing himself since the age of 14 in Funk & Soul, Reggae, Ska, House, Rare Groove and Hip Hop, Dan went on to co-found ‘The Lockdown Legacy’ DJ events raising thousands for local and national charities, DJ’d at FAITH as well as broadcasting on East London’s Totally Wired Radio, owned by Acid Jazz record label boss, Eddie Piller. In 2023, Dan delved into the production side of music fuelled by his thirst for learning and love of music – ‘JazzCazz’ is the first of many more productions to come.

Ronnie Turner needs no introduction to dance music connoisseurs with a career that started in the early ’80s and continues unabated. He has DJ’d alongside the likes of Sean French, Robbie Vincent, Jeff Young, Greg Edwards, Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia and Tony Humphries to name but a few. Ronnie’s remix credits include Odyssey, Tortured Soul, Noel Mckoy, Bodyrox, Tom Jones, Richard Seaborne and The JBs with releases on Masterworks Music, Atjazz Records and Yam Who's Midnight Riot. He turned festival promotor in 2020 with Faith’s Stuart Patterson and there is a Goa Festival 2024 waiting to happen! Debuting as a solo artist in 2020, Emma Noble’s sound is rooted in her deep love for rare soul, funk disco and Gospel. Her releases have been embraced by the most respected tastemakers on the scene, receiving radio support from Lauren Lavern, Don Letts, Deb Grant, Tony Blackburn, Gary Crowley, Norman Jay MBE and Eddie Piller, with Craig Charles describing her arrival on the scene as ‘one of the highlights of 2020’. Emma’s 2022 collaboration with Matt Berry resulted in the Psych-Soul cover of Doris’s ’67 release, ‘Beatmaker’, featured on the BAFTA Award winning ‘Toast of Tinseltown’. Emma is also one half of ‘Noble & Heath’, the double decking, dynamic, vinyl only DJ duo, DJ'ing all over the UK & Europe in places such as The Royal Albert Hall, Ronnie Scotts, XOYO, KOKO, Jazz Cafe, 100 Club and festivals including Glastonbury. Her full band line up shows always sell out along with her self-promoted event 'Soul at The Hall' at the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room.

      Simon Fisher Turner

      Instability Of The Signal

Renowned composer Simon Fisher Turner presents his brand new album Instability of the Signal, released via Mute.

Recorded by Simon Fisher Turner and Music Producers Guild Awards winner Francine Perry, this 13-track album is an intricate exploration of sound, inspired by the creative minds of Breda Beban, Hrvoje Horvatic, and poet Harold Pinter, whose verses, 'Democracy' and 'The Special Relationship’, feature on the record. It pulls together four strands of Fisher Turner's sonic experimentation, which he identifies as Slivers, Sounds, Strings, and Singing. The 'slivers' are tiny snippets of audio he used as source material for the tracks, all originally created by Salford Electronics (aka David Padbury), and reworked by Fisher Turner into foundations for entire tracks. The record also includes beautiful string arrangements by the Elysian Collective, who have toured with Pulp and feature on the latest releases from The Last Dinner Party and Pet Shop Boys.

Like Fisher Turner's long and varied career, Instability of The Signal is an accumulation of experience, effervescent memories, sounds and textures. It contains hidden learnings. It is about how restorative singing of ourselves and to ourselves can be but is also a document of times and places delivered in beautifully impressionistic palettes of sounds and voices. It is also another document of Fisher Turner's remarkable life and unshakeable curiosity about sound.

Mud Ride : A Messy Trip Through The Grunge Explosion

A down-and-dirty chronicle of the birth and evolution of the Seattle grunge scene-from amateur skate parks and underground hardcore clubs to worldwide phenomenon-as told by one of its founding fathers and lead guitarist of legendary alternative rock band, Mudhoney. In the late 80s and early 90s, Steve Turner and his friends-Seattle skate punks, hardcore kids, and assorted misfits-started forming bands in each other's basements and accidentally created a unique sound that spread far beyond their once-sleepy city. Mud Ride offers an inside look at the tight-knit grunge scene, the musical influences and experiments that shaped the grunge sound, and the story of Turner's bands, Green River and Mudhoney, which went from underground flophouse shows to selling out stadiums with Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Including stories about the key moments, musicians, and albums from grunge's beginnings to its come-down from the highs of global success and stardom, this is the first account of the musical phenomenon that took over the world from someone who was there for it all. Written by Steve Turner, lead guitarist of Mudhoney, a foundational grunge band that inspired musical icons from Kurt Cobain to Sonic Youth, Mud Ride features a foreword by Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard and never-before-seen photographs and grunge memorabilia throughout. Take a seat and ride through the messy and muddy grunge scene that grew from the basements of the Northwest and went on to circle the globe.

Believe In Magic - Heavenly Recordings: The First 30 Years - Working Men's Club Exclusive Edition

We're super excited to be able to get our hands on some of these limited edition version of this fantastic book.

This edition features an exclusive 7" single
                 - Angel (part 1) b/w Angel (part 2) - from Piccadilly favourites Working Men’s Club. They blew us away with their live shows last year and we can't wait for their debut album.

You may have heard Angel in all its 12 minute glory in WMC’s legendary live sets. Here’s the studio version, produced by Ross Orton, split over both sides of a 7”.

Heavenly was already a state of mind. Seemed like the right time to make it something really special. We were all deeply immersed in music that we loved. None of us could believe our fucking luck, really. (Jeff Barrett)

It was thirty years ago today - or thereabouts - that Heavenly came to be. In celebration of this big ol’ birthday comes Believe in Magic - a chronicle not only of Foxbase Alpha, Working Men’s Club and 28 of the releases in between that got the label to where it is today, but also of the haircuts, nights down the pub, pencil-eraser-carvings, cheese toasties, acid houses, Sunday Socials and lost Weekenders - Yorkshire and otherwise - that are as much a part of its story.

As Jeff Barrett puts it at the beginning of the book, if there’s a continuous theme that runs through all of this, I think it’s that everything comes down to conversations with people about music. It might seem like it all starts with someone on one side of the counter who is selling you something, or someone writing excitedly in a magazine telling you about a band you need to hear, but I don’t think I’ve ever really seen things as one-way transactions. It’s more an ongoing dialogue, one that never really stops and helps to build up this growing soundtrack to our lives, something that’s passed from one person to another. That’s really the ever-present thread. That’s why we still believe in magic.

Though we are three decades distant from The World According to Sly and Lovechild, lineup changes, ups, downs, and a good few office cleanups under the label’s belt, the Heavenly firm continue not to believe their fucking luck; at still being here, keepin’ on keepin’ on doing what they love, and at being able to pass all of this - then, now, and next week - on to you.

Believe in Magic is a fully illustrated history of one of the most colourful and exciting independent British record labels; a label responsible for creating satellite communities of fans around the country and at all the major festivals.
After several years working at Factory and Creation, Heavenly Recordings was set up by Jeff Barrett in 1990 as the acid house revolution was in full swing; early releases set the tone and tempo for the mood of the decade to come - their first release was by perhaps the most revered acid house DJ of them all, Andrew Weatherall; and this was quickly followed by singles from St Etienne and Manic Street Preachers.

Heavenly was always different to other labels; more of a 'club' with a defiant spirit of inclusiveness, and in 1994 they set up The Heavenly Social, which alongside the Hacienda, became perhaps the most famous club in recent British history, where the Chemical Brothers made their name.

Over nearly 200 releases in thirty years Heavenly have consistently produced some of the most exciting music across all genres - dance, acid house, singer-songwriter, psych-garage - and this book collects rare photographs, ephemera, artwork into a celebration of a label that is, alongside Rough Trade and Factory, one of the most beloved institutions on the independent landscape. Running though the book are thirty stories, mostly told in the form of oral history by artists like James Dean Bradfield, Flowered Up, Beth Orton, Doves and Don Letts, which capture the presiding personality of the label, its bands and the people associated with its success.
