Return To Splendour

Following up from his successful self released Red Tape album, Harlech based producer Gavin Brick, aka The Metamorph, has outdone himself with 'Return To Splendour', his first release for Werra Foxma Records, and the label's first ever pressed vinyl release. 'The title felt like it had the right amount of grandeur without being grandiose - rather like the music' explains Gavin, who creates his amazing soundscapes in his spectacular Neon Nebula Studio, with all parts played by hand with no computer sequencing. Originally recorded as a session for the highly influential Magic Window radio show, hosted by Steven Anderson (Letters From Mouse), the decision was made to make it a full release on WFR. From the icy isolation of Opening Titles, to the warm piano tumbles and old world vocal samples of The Visible World, to the soaring, major key majesty of Slumber Submerged, Return To Splendour reaches the places that few beatless, ambient releases reach.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: The Metamorph returns for some more of his wonderful, classic synth inspired sound. From the twinkling keys of 'The Visible World' or the widescreen majesty of closer 'Slumber Submerged', this is a confident and beautiful release on a wonderful new label. For fans of Vangelis, Eno or Tangerine Dream, Gavin is a talented composer and a lovely chap to boot. Superb stuff.

    Felt

The Splendour Of Fear - 2022 Reissue

Lawrence escapes the contours of a bland city and retreats into his mind. Felt had risen from the underworld searching for a new horizon but only managed to slip into a desolate obscurity! Dark black slabs of creosote guitar – vast swathes of epic interplay – casting futuristic shadows – an idiosyncratic and unobtrusively brilliant band, the music Felt made on this album is unlike anything attempted before. This really is a template for an age yet to come.

During the ‘80s Felt made ten albums and ten singles for the Cherry Red and Creation labels. This beautifully produced series examines the work of one of the greatest underground groups of modern times.

Before the Stone Roses and after Be-Bop Deluxe and Plastic Ono Band, John Leckie worked with Felt. Booked into a metal/reggae studio in Birmingham’s industrial wasteland he sculpted a Michelangelo slice of new rock – exquisite and beautiful guitar odysseys – quite unlike anything the city had experienced before. Merging pop with a classical nuance Felt stood alone as the forerunners of a brand new style.

      The Splendour

The Best Way To Make Money

The Brighton boys who were fresh meat for Zane Lowe have now released their debut album care of Kasabian's producer Dan Swift. They achieve an edgy psychotic sound chock full of angular guitars that contrast with the languid vocals.

        The Splendour

        Audio

The Splendour is the most recent incarnation of a band that has been brewing for 4 years. Front man Justin Gourlay met Sam Beer-Pearce (drums) when Sam was still playing keyboards with The Pipettes alongside Joe Beaumont (Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong) He left The Pipettes pretty much immediately and they soon started as a three piece with Jordan Duggie, John Crick joining in 2006 making it four and Greg Houghton replacing Anthony Keegan on bass late 2007. Since then forty or so songs have been cut down to thirteen for their forthcoming album "Best Way To Make Money". This single is the first taster of their sound.
