Charlie Megira & The Modern Dance Club

Love Police - 2023 Reissue

Provocative post-punk from Israel’s undercover goth prince. Megira’s lone album with the Modern Dance Club showcased a grimier, more driving vision of his brand of trashy no wave. Spread across 31 tracks and two LPs, Love Police schizophrenically mixes industrial soundscapes, surf ditties, hardcore, swamp pop, bubble grunge, screaming, ecstasy, and enough fuzz to warrant a needle check.

Joan As Police Woman & Tony Allen & Dave Okumu

      The Solution Is Restless

Of the album Joan Wasser says :
Damon Albarn introduced me to Afrobeat legend, Tony Allen, at the March 2019 Africa Express event “The Circus” and we hit it off. Tony and I played a version of Nina Simone's "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" and decided to record together. I asked my old friend and fierce musician, Dave Okumu, to join from London and that November, in a Parisian studio, we improvised all night. When the world shut down, I used those recordings to write a record entitled “The Solution Is Restless”. This first single, “Take Me To Your Leader”, is the most incendiary on the new record. I wrote it watching Jacinda Ardern, PM of New Zealand, navigate 2020. In my dreamworld, the US asks to meet her in order to learn how to better run the country. “Take me to your leader/ ‘cause I’m ready to play/ can’t hold my breath any longer/ word on the street is she’s a healer/ I’m know I’m down to obey/ and don’t we need a break in the chaos”

Tony Allen was the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti’s band Africa '70 from 1968 to 1979, and was one of the primary co-founders of the genre of Afrobeat. Fela once stated that, "without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat” and he was described by Brian Eno as "perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived". Besides many other musical milestones and collaborations, in recent years Tony teamed up with Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon and Simon Tong to form The Good, the Bad & the Queen.

Dave Okumu is best known for fronting the Mercury Music Prize band The Invisible and more recently announcing the release of a solo album ‘Knopperz’ due for release in September.

        Juliana Hatfield

        Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police

“With “Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police’ I am continuing the project that I started last year with my “Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John” album. I hope to continue to go deep into covering artists that were important to me in my formative years. The songs I’ve chosen seem to resonate in the present moment. “Rehumanize Yourself”, “Landlord”, and “Murder By Numbers” explore ugly kinds of nationalism, abuses of power, and the mendacity of large swaths of the ruling class. And then there are the timeless, relatable psychodramas: “Every Breath You Take”, “Can’t Stand Losing You”, “Canary In A Coalmine”. In the Police, each player’s style was so distinctive, accomplished and unique that I didn’t even attempt to match any of it; for anyone to try and play drums like Stewart Copeland would be a thankless, pointless task that is bound to fail. Instead, I simplified and deconstructed, playing a lot of the drums myself, in my rudimentary, caveman style. Chris Anzalone (Roomful Of Blues) played the rest of the drums. Ed Valauskas (the Gravel Pit) and I each played about half of the bass parts, while I did all the guitars and keyboards. I listened to a lot of the Police when I was preparing and making this album, and their recordings are as refreshing and exciting as ever. I hope that my interpretations of these songs can inspire people to keep loving the Police like I did, and still do.” -Juliana Hatfield

                Joan As Police Woman

                The Classic

Fourth original album from New York’s dazzlingly original Joan Wasser aka Joan As Police Woman, the follow up to 2011’s critically acclaimed ‘The Deep Field’.

Features fellow New Yorkers Reggie Watts and Joseph Arthur, most notably on the album’s joyful doo-wop accapella title track.

Watts can also be heard scatting at the end of ‘The Classic’s lead single ‘Holy City’, a Motown influenced number inspired by new love and a trip to Jerusalem.

Elsewhere on the album other ‘classic’ influences are audible, such as the Barry White-esque sensuality of ‘Good Together’ and the gentle reggae of album closer ‘Ask Me’.

                  The Others

King Pin / Splinter In My Soul

Following on from the huge success of the recent Subscape release on Dub Police, The Others are back with a bang with ultra-wobble big-hitter "King Pin". This sees their signature sound developing and morphing into an even bigger relentless weapon. In the same way that the Subscape release was arranged, the flip of this release sees The Others on a much lighter tip incorporating old school drum & bass vibes and possibly highlighting a softer sensitive side to the boys we all assumed were premier league hit-men.

                  Unitz

                  The Drop / Mornin' Subs

The precocious London-based Unitz started DJing from the age of eight and producing from the age of 13! Now a little older he brings us this double header for the Dub Police label. "The Drop" is totally off the hinges! A bit of a teasing atmospheric bell tinkling intro makes way for the mother of all electroid dubstep drops that's had crowds up and down the land shouting for the rewind. Having received massive amounts of airplay both on Rinse FM and Kiss FM as well as the live circuit this is sure to fly off the shelves. "Mornin Blues" offers something a bit more deep and a bit more subtle to mess with your head. Rinsed by Caspa, Rusko, DJ Orien, The Others, Mary Anne Hobbes, Subscape, Oris Jay and N-Type.
