The Chap

Well Done Europe

The Chap, a pan-European modern pop group based in London and Berlin, began life at the beginning of the last decade. In their quest to create music which “sounds wrong”, they pre- empted the current flavour for lo-fi prog-pop by several years and spawned a legion of fans who couldn’t believe how a band that revelled in the multilayered detachment and precision of their recordings could dive headlong into the realms of hard rock n roll immediacy, gaining themselves a reputation as one of the most exciting, challenging, and engaging live acts around. After two seminal bedroom-produced albums, “The Horse” and “Ham” - the latter in particular gathering considerable acclaim from the likes of Errol Alkan, Kissy Sellout and The Wire Magazine - The Chap delivered a third album, the masterpiece that is “Mega Breakfast”. This album featured corporate motivational style anthems about “proper music” and wanting to clone oneself.

Despite being lauded by Pitchfork and many others, commercial success and world domination continued to evade The Chap, so they finally decided to “sell out” by recording a collection of pop classics that constitute their fourth album “Well Done Europe”. Needless to say, it’s another masterpiece featuring hit after hit, quite a few of which mention love and death and stuff like that. It sounds like the coolest new wave pop album ever recorded by a group of teachers (almost nobody in The Chap is a teacher).

Omo is a new band comprising occasional Chap keyboardist Berit Immig and visual artist David Muth. Together they make pop that delights and surprises, eminently hummable and chewable, it's post pop pop for the now generation. A little like Laurie Anderson jamming with the Tom Tom Club but only a little. This is a sure-fire chart hit in a parallel universe where all TV programmes are made by David Lynch and every household owns a hover car. On the flip we have the kings of school teacher dada pop that never fails to entertain, The Chap. "Well Done You" is as smooth as baby food, spiky as a sea urchin and as fruity as Leslie Nielsen. Their tribute to achievement is a top notch slice of noughties pop that will have you grinning all the way to the Bill Gates motivational speech.

This latest Kotchy EP features an eye-wideningly expansive five tracks of new and remixed material from the multi-faceted genius songwriter-producer. Harnessing the more sinister side of "Superstar", Hrdvsion's jacking techno monster morphs Kotchy's sleazy vocals and killer drum breaks into a dark twisted club stinger. "Holla" is Kotchy's call to arms; a track for the everyman, its heavy beats, synth stabs and screamed vocals add up to a raw and experimental strain of wonky hip hop, with a lyrical mixture of struggle, pressure, humour ridicule and revolt. London and Berlin outfit The Chap turn their dial to smooth on their mix of "Check Out My Keychain", delivering a version that's clean and crisp and as strange and enchanting as it is stunning. Parisian wonky-hop master Debruit gets his KeeClac alter ego out on another take on the same track for more of a fidget house sounding party version. Rounding off the EP, "Party Your Blues Away" features Philly rapper Benni E, with her slick flows backed by Kotchy's hushed vocals. This cut is a lyrical drugstore built on spooky Mo' Wax-esque skewed dope downbeats, awash with strings and horns.
