Sarah Vaughan

And Her Trio - Swingin' Easy - 2024 Reissue

Swingin' Easy finds the great Sarah Vaughan backed only by a rhythm section of piano, bass & drums, a format in which she only recorded a few times during this initial period of her career.

This is one of Sarah Vaughan's lesser- known albums for Emarcy, combining two separate trio sessions from 1954 and 1957. The earlier date includes pianist John Malachi, bassist Joe Benjamin and drummer Roy Haynes. The second trio includes the same drummer, plus pianist Jimmy Jones and bassist Richard Davis. The CD is rounded off with four live performance recorded Mister Kelly's in Chicago during August 1957.

    Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday Sings - 2024 Reissue

After an impasse recording with tightly arranged groups and big bands with strings, Billie Holiday signed her last long-term contract with Norman Granz. He had showcased her as a star with his Jazz at the Philharmonic tours in the mid and late forties, and when he signed her as a recording artist in 1952, he endeavoured to repeat the small group magic of her early years. On Billie Holiday Sings , she is backed by an all- star sextet including Charlie Shavers on trumpet, Flip Phillips on tenor sax, Oscar Peterson on piano, and Barney Kessel on guitar, among others.

      Ella Fitzgerald

      Ella Sings Ellington

Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald's paths had surely crossed many times during the Thirties, Forties, and early Fifties. However, no recorded trace of the two legendary musicians collaborating exists until 1957, when Norman Granz produced a series of big band and small group sessions. This album presents Ella singing Ellington tunes backed by a small group featuring tenor saxophonist Ben Webster and legendary violinist Stuff Smith, plus Ella's regular accompanist Paul Smith and the great Oscar Peterson sharing the piano, and Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis taking turns on guitar. "Webster and Smith solo in their highly singular manner with Ben's take- off on 'Rocks' the climax of the song. Stuff is angular, probing and strong in his solo on 'I Let a Song'. The slow- walking 'Squeeze Me' is individualized by a unison blend among Ella, Stuff and Ben. These are history-making sessions. An absolute must in any library." - ***** John A. Tynan, DownBeat

        Billie Holiday

Songs For Distingue Lovers - 2023 Reissue

The first popular jazz singer to move audiences with the intense, personal feeling of classic blues, Billie Holiday (1915-1959) changed the art of American pop vocals forever. Songs for Distingue Loversis one of the best albums from her late period and finds her surrounded by important instrumentalists, such as Ben Webster and Harry "Sweets" Edison.

The album received a four-star rating in Down Beat upon its release: "This is one of those loose, utterly relaxed sessions where the rhythm section is settled in a happy groove behind the singer and the horn players are left free to say their piece without the restriction of short takes. Miss Holiday remainsthe unique stylist, still incomparable."- John A. Tynan
