AQUA X: Super Coracle / Tarzana Split

Introducing a super charged split LP featuring the talents of Cameron Stallones aka Sun Araw and Spencer Clark’s duo with Jan Andersen, Tarzana.

What originally started as an Aquapelago inspired residency in the summer of 2021 quickly developed into its own thing. Truth be told, both artists always surfed their own personal waves of musical freedom, so Aquapelagos Vol.2 album became AQUA X, a split offshoot work featuring rehashed Tarzana compositions on one side and a live presentation form Cameron’s residency in the island of Tenerife around Keroxen festival's 13th Edition. With two artists very dear to us this split LP picks up perfectly on the aquapelagic concept and twists inside out into worlds high and below creadng a further testament to both's artists oeuvres. Here’s an extract of Professor Haywards original liner notes regarding the music: ‘’The tracks on this album reflect the geo-cultural position of Californian-based musicians, Cameron Stallones, (who records here under the Sun Araw moniker), and Spencer Clark and Jan Andersen’s (performing as Tarzana) with oceanic atmospheres and structures of feeling.

Sun Araw’s dedication to producing subtle, flowing, psychotropic compositions can be read as an a`unement to the oceanic sublime. Recorded within the disused Keroxen tank in Santa Cruz harbour in Tenerife, The Canary Suite is an extended piece that features a mix of electronic pulses, short synthesizer fragments and distorted guitar bursts. The textures are relatively sparse throughout, with a linear emotional contour sustained by an ongoing melodic play within a defined band of possibilities before settling into a calmer, soothing and floating mood, like an aural floatation tank.

Tarzana’s tracks artfully blend simple synthesizer tones, vocal exhortations, and an assortment of treated instrument sounds to create a pulsing, wandering and restless music. Short rhythmic ostinato fragments push and pull against bold blown pipes and horns while subtle darker colours and shades intermittently move through the soundscape to intensify the mood. This is busy and dense music but with an orderly flow and internal sense of motion that sweeps up the listener in its wake, like a sailing ship propelled through tropical seas.’’

    Maarja Nuut & Sun Araw

    Fantasias For Violin & Guitar

Estonian violinist & singer Maarja Nuut & LA's original cactus muncher Sun Araw hand in gentle, unpolished improvisations on their collaborative album “Fantasias for Violin & Guitar”, recorded live on location by Jackson Bailey aka Tapes.

Brought together by Tallinn’s IDA Radio under the umbrella of a 10-day sound residency in magnificent Narva Art Residency on the border of Estonia & Russia, Maarja Nuut & Sun Araw set up their gear to jump head first into unknown territory of live-improvisation.

Don’t let the title fool you though, as the intro “White Comb” unveils, there’s more here than the old violin & guitar: Buchla magic, entertaining tries to MIDI, a violin, gentle glockenspiel fills & ringing bells, occasional bursts of electronica zooming in from unknown sources & Cameron Stallone’s guitar swings all over the place glued together by Maarja’s stellar voice.

    Sun Araw

    Rock Sutra

‘Rock Sutra’ is the new space rock album from Sun Araw. ‘Roomboe’, the first track, illustrates this process. Experience is elastic. Humans alive right now tend to think there is some sort of ‘baseline’ experience of a thing, a room, a person, a feeling, some version we all agree on. This isn't true at all: experience is completely dependent on the quality of attention of the experiencer. There is a granularity to experience that, when tuned up, reveals deeper and deeper space inside of things. When you zoom in (by pure observation: by not-articulating, not-thinking), you create ‘room’, you make space. Just like that. For instance, ‘Roomboe’ has an extremely limited tonal framework; about 9 notes for the main guitar melody. As the guitar pushes against these melodic limitations with continually renewed attention and energy, it begins to create space around itself. And all of the sudden (at about 4:57), out of this constriction, space balloons up from everywhere simultaneously. ‘Roomboe’ is a clue about how to open a portal outwards into free space.

‘78 Sutra’ is about orbital motion. ‘Catalina’ is about taking a walk. ‘Arrambe’ is about a peculiar feeling you can get when you zoom in far enough. The music is offered in a spirit of generosity and adventure; it doesn’t stay put and it keeps zooming in to reveal more and more. The album was recorded live-to-midi with the band and this is the first Sun Araw album recorded like that. That band is Jon Leland on drums and percussion and Marc Riordan on synthesizers and Cameron Stallones on synthesizers and guitar and vocals.

Guarda In Alto - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Cameron Stallones aka Sun Araw is the quintessential contemporary cosmic courier. Emerging from the fumes of an ancient Egyptian civilization and now settled in one of the meccas of the American lysergic experience, Austin, Texas, our hero boasts an endless discography and collaborations with luminaries of the caliber of Laraaji (a solo new age traveler discovered by Brian Eno) and the legendary Rastafarian group, Congos.

For the soundtrack of the feature film 'Guarda In Alto', directed by Fulvio Risuleo (the daring story of a baker who has access to a parallel universe on the roofs of the city) Sun Araw looks towards the possible horizons. Bypassing psych and electronic glitch, Sun Araw jets through a double album that seems to refer to the golden age of computer music as well as to the inventions of the Lovely house (the legendary New York label specializing in minimalism and 20th century avant-garde) and to a certain immeasurably psychotic dub aesthetic.

A disk composed of many micro-cells, which marries the adventure to the 'edge of heaven' of the protagonist, reiterating that dreamy feeling that the protagonist has accustomed us to for several years now.

      Sun Araw

      The Saddle Of The Increate

This newest outing from cosmic nutcase Sun Araw is a psychedelic and avante-garde stroll through Americana, plucked strings and sudden turns of bold FM synthesis. Cosmic rhythms and field recording mix into a heady concoction of rhythms and drone on 'Lassie' while 'Orthrus' brings strangely blooming nu-jazz phrases into the same sonic space as jagged afrobeat percussives and skittering samples. A truly fascinating and strangely evocative set of Cowboy-themed (really) pieces, pay attention.

        S. Araw "Trio" XI

        Gazebo Effect

‘S. Araw “Trio” XI’ is a new configuration of the Sun Araw Band, the live action collaborative branch of Sun Araw. Over the course of several studio dates in Hollywood, California, “Trio” players Cameron Stallones, Alex Gray and Mitchell Brown (with no prior intentions of doing any such thing) successfully planted a garden of ‘non-dimensional’ objects, not only spontaneously generating these objects but also mastering their nurture and cultivation.

‘Gazebo Effect’ is a double vinyl nocturnal stroll into the depths of the garden, its upper lawns and outbuildings. The listener is advised that as the objects have been ‘set growing’ their location at any given time is difficult to predict. The garden cannot be exited by the path it is entered, the angles involved being extremely precise. These factors (and others) clearly illustrate the value for oneself (and others) in the building of an observational structure: The Gazebo. However, it must be understood that the presence of this structure has a transformative effect on the garden Itself. In other words, the ‘Gazebo Effect’ is a music production system that allows a performance to be obstructed and (thus) interpreted while it is being played.

          S. Araw “Trio” XI are C Stallones (Midi-Guitar, Ensoniq Mirage), A Gray (Computer Synthesis, Bamboo Saxophone) and M Brown (1/4” Magnetic Tape, Yamaha CP35, Roland System 100 Synthesizer).

          Laraaji

Remixes - Inc. Bee Mask / Sun Araw Remixes

As the new wave of New Age begins to gain momentum, All Saints present a new series of 12" featuring modern reinterpretations of forgotten classics from original ambient masters. The first part of this project sees a quartet of modern practitioners of electronic healing sounds reimagining four pieces from the back catalogue of New York's experimental visionary Laraaji. Beginning his career improvising trance inducing jams on a modified autoharp, Laraaji was discovered by Eno, studied with Satchidananda and invented laughter meditation while releasing a prolific discography of new age sounds. Within the recent recontextualisation of that oft maligned genre Laraaji has found a new audience among some Piccadilly shop favourites including Jonathan Wilson and Sun Araw, both of whom invited him to join them on tour. It's the latter who features on this 12", combining his trademark stoned skew with the celestial vibrations of "Tilturn" for a strung out trip into the realm of experimental dub. Elsewhere, Spectrum Spools' Bee Mask injects a dose of bass weight into the cystaline chime of "Cave", Ela Orleans creates the first psyche/breaks hybrid with a driving take on the melodic pulse of "Kalimba" and Motion Sickness Of Time Travel cleanses us with the purifying drone of "Space".

              STAFF COMMENTS

Darryl says: After his universally loved collaboration with the Congos, Cameron Stallones aka Sun Araw hits us with his sixth LP. 'The Inner Treaty' sees Stallones take us on an improvised and deeply cosmic trip to the outer limits of his mind, step inside if you dare!!
