Sugar Snap EP

Demi Riquísimo has collaborated with close friend and fellow producer Manami on his sub-label A Lifetime On The Hips. The release see’s Demi Riquísimo and Tokyo born Manami link up on two new originals, accompanied by stand-out remixes from Subwax owner Baldo and prolific Italian DJ and producer Matisa.

The fourth release on the sub-label it opens up with the EP’s namesake 'Sugar Snap’ a dreamlike record that effortlessly blends ambient textures and celestial melodies, yet remains primed for the dance floor. Following suit, the A2, 'Interstellar,' aptly lives up to its name, enhanced by cosmic soundscapes that transcend traditional boundaries.

Barcelona based DJ, producer and label owner Baldo takes the reins for a remix of the A1, delivering a spacey rework infused with breakbeat elements that breathes alternative life into the original. Meanwhile, Italian producer Matisa works her magic on 'Interstellar,' transforming it into a lively organ-driven roller with a more playful bounce to it.

    Hand Habits

    Sugar The Bruise

Hand Habits, the project of Los Angeles-based musician Meg Duffy (they/them),presents a new collection of songs titled Sugar The Bruise.

Inspired by month-long songwriting class Duffy taught in the summer of 2021, they re-discovered, with newfound clarity, the generative capacity of embracing the unknown, and how essential collaboration and improvisation are for accessing the indescribable.

Working with Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic, Art Feynman) and Philip Weinrobe (Adrienne Lenker, Cass McCombs), Duffy surrendered to the present moment, trusting that whatever sounds and words emerged were meant to emerge. With additional production, engineering and arranging from Jeremy Harris, Duffy created something which, in their words, “turned out nothing like I’d imagined it would.”

THIS IS A RECORD STORE DAY 2023 EXCLUSIVE, LIMITED TO ONE PER PERSON.

Senza Sapere Niente di Lei (1969, Luigi Comencini) is one of the first scores composed by Ennio Morricone for a Giallo film, just ahead of the great season of the cult Italian thrilling genre forged by Dario Argento. 12" yellow 1LP, gatefold Morricone's score has never been issued on vinyl. It is one of his most ethereal scores, with a sweet and delicate theme unfolding in a lullaby to the rhythm of a valzer. Think lounge-jazz to experimental music. The final result is a sensual and suave sound that matches the quintessential morbid style of Giallo cinema

A stone-cold classic conscious Lovers Rock tune from the seminal British reggae group Brown Sugar. ‘I’m In Love With A Dreadlocks’ was originally released in 1977, and is now pressed loud for the first ever time on this new one-off press edition 12” on Soul Jazz Records.

              Hudson Mohawke

              Cry Sugar

Hudson Mohawke’s third album, ‘Cry Sugar’, deepens his practice of producing motivational music for club goers - uplifting the debauchery and inspiring many through his own brand of anthemic maximalism.

Trading in his lineage in dark UK back alleys filled with Glaswegian antipathy for studio sessions with blazed Pavarotti-inspired tenors and drunk string quartets, Mohawke has dialled in an ongoing fascination with melding high and low culture. Afterall, he is indeed the architect for the high peaks of high-definition trap production that became embellished in the 2010s - a style that has been appropriated in everything from beer can-littered college parties to Arby’s commercials.

American decadence, then, becomes a stage forhis music to thrive - where the DJ booth becomes a composer’s podium for him to conduct the tense drama between debauchery and apocalypse, the ‘mise-en-scene’ of club culture in 2022.

                STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Technicoloured, wide-screen bass and synth luminary Hudson Mohawke returns with more of his 5D, extra-fidelity sonic explosions. Taking cues off everything from opera to trap, there's few that push the envelope in such grandiose ways.

                  Karen Dalton

                  Shuckin' Sugar

In 1962, Karen summoned Richard Tucker to join her in Colorado, extolling the healthier lifestyle, and plentiful gigs at Boulder folk club The Attic. Upon his arrival, the pair solidified their personal and professional relationship, riding horses in the mountains, and performing as a duo at parties and venues throughout Denver and Boulder. Stories of the spell they conjured – and rumours of tapes! – have circulated among friends and musicians who witnessed them, but until now, no recorded evidence had turned up. Shuckin’ Sugar is the glorious result of three reel to reel tapes that miraculously found their way to us in November, 2018; which featured two complete shows from The Attic in January ‘63, and a benefit concert for The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) recorded the following February. Their gigs would often include brief solo sets from Karen and Richard, in addition to the duets, and all seven solo songs of Karen’s found on the three reels are included here, as well as five duets, sequenced as close to how it all went down as humanly possible. To describe the record would take a poet, but all I can say is that unveiling a missing chapter in the Karen Dalton story – with six songs we’ve never heard her sing before – is cause for celebration in Delmore’s world.

“From her opening, jaw-dropping lift-off with early blues standard “Trouble In Mind,” the unique otherworld Karen conjured springs into vivid life. Playing to audiences inevitably bound to the era’s formalities and traditions, Karen instinctively pushed the envelope, straying into uncharted territory beyond the established borders. She must have bewildered many who came to see her in those winsome Peter, Paul and Mary times." From the liner notes by Kris Needs

Cult label Acido returns with more of that spiritual electronic vibration. Written and produced by drummer and curator Andres Lõo from Tallin, Estonia...it could be quite easily be from Detroit particularly seems to reference James Stinton's The Other People Place alias.

Side A's "Synaptic Sugar" is bright and with a bassline so rubbery it practically bounces off the wax! Neat, crisp percussion keeps the rest of the elements on track; but you can sense the restrain and this one should get you bubbling in no time!

Meanwhile "Gentle Hell" is a dark n wavy dive into the mainframe; muffled sonar clicks and low tones guiding us through a murky electrostatic haze with no defined trajectory.

As always, fiercely experimental yet deliciously listenable grooves from the Acido camp - big up's Andres Lõo!

                      Sunflower Bean

                      Headful Of Sugar

New York trio Sunflower Bean - vocalist and bassist Julia Cumming (she/her), guitarist and vocalist Nick Kivlen (he/him), and drummer Olive Faber (she/they) – announce that their long-awaited third album Headful of Sugar will be released on May 6 via Lucky Number.

A psychedelic headrush, fuelled by the agony and ecstasy of contemporary American life, Headful of Sugar is about outsiders disillusioned with the modern world who, despite their alienation, refuse to be subdued; buoyed by the relief found in interpersonal relationships that counteract the daily barrage of cheap entertainment and convenience.

If their acclaimed second album Twentytwo in Blue, released in 2018, was a self-described “ode to the fleeting innocence of youth,” then Headful of Sugar shoves the listener into a new, dangerous world, one that is less safe but also less suffocating. “Tomorrow is not promised, no tour is promised, no popularity is promised, no health or money is promised,” bassist/vocalist Julia Cumming says. “Why not make what you want to make on your own terms? Why not make a record that makes you want to dance? Why not make a record that makes you want to scream?”

Headful of Sugar was produced and mixed by UMO’s Jacob Portrait, co-engineered by Olive Faber and Portrait, and recorded between Electric Lady and Sunflower Bean Studios.

                        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Without a doubt the most vibrant Sunflower Bean outing yet. Though their moody NY-indebted garage-rock sound is still present, there's a latent melodicism and experimental feedom that seeps out of these tracks. It's bold, and it's a little different to the sound they've established thus far but i'm absolutely for it.

La Dama Rossa Uccide Sette Volte (The Red Queen Kills Seven Times) (RSD22 EDITION)

THIS IS A RECORD STORE DAY 2022 EXCLUSIVE, LIMITED TO ONE PER PERSON.

'The Red Queen Kills Seven Times' blurs the line between thriller and horror. The cult success it enjoys can be attributed to its aesthetics that encapsulate the essence of the Italian thriller. Bruno Nicolai's score for The Red Queen Kills Seven Times flawlessly brings together the pop and underground music sensitivity of the 1970s with the gothic nuances of the plot thanks to a clever use of harpsichords. The result is a pivotal score, not just because of the importance of the film itself, but for the whole golden age of the soundtrack genre. Exquisite, sweet and sensual lounge tracks are counterbalanced by tense, deranged and suspense-filled dodecaphonic highlights and by obstinate bass lines that become the perfect soundtrack for the Red Queen's murders or the victims' desperate getaways.

The album is part of CAM Sugarís PAURA, a series of standalone soundtrack releases that follow the same-titled compilation which explores rare and unreleased horror gems from the label archive. This new limited 50th anniversary blood-red vinyl edition of this cult, sought-after soundtrack - a masterpiece of Italian Giallo cinemaóis fully remastered from original tapes, includes two bonus tracks and is destined to become a staple for the collectors of the genre and for the fans of the golden age of Italian and horror cinema, making it an essential release of Record Store Day 2022.

Marika's first 2 EPs pressed on vinyl for the first time

Leaving border control slackjawed and slanted, the latest release from Association Fatale finds its way from Paris to Piccadilly and I am in full buzz. Raised on US hardcore and recently active in the noise scene, Falcon cancelled his Wire subscription, got the gear in and flipped his mode into the lunatic fringe of the dance music world. This circuitous route to the 1210s provides the Frenchman with a particularly peculiar POV, fully represented in the Balearic industrial and concrete dancehall hits on this mini-LP.

Opener "You Make Me Feel So Good" splinters synth vox atop a tropical rhythm box, delivering a deranged but sunny sound a little like a lost Art Of Noise cover by SKRS, lifted to the next level by the slap bass of the second half. The rolling rhythm and moody synth tones of "Sit On My Face" follow, submerging Miami bass in Belgium's new beat gloom, all the while boasting an irresistible beat in a shamanic breaks style. "Love Blow Dem 40" brings back the slap bass amid a frenzy of insectile sequences, juddering bass wonks and a ketty treated vocal, softening up the cerebellum ahead of the machine voodoo of "Psy Rance", a majestic wonkbomb on the A4.

After an unsettling intro of background noise and barely audible voices, the B-side bursts into life via the potion shop aesthetics of "1Tension", a fusion of queasy wave generation, needlepoint synths and 64bit psychedelia which should work wonders in the witching hour. Falcon raises the tempo for the freakish dancehall of "You Make Me Feel So Good II", (essential listening for the Ruf Dug fans), before slipping the mooring with paradisiacal closer "Would You Like To Be A Gearstluz Too?", a gloriously retro bit of sample-a-delic Balearic house which could easily have graced an Ibiza tourist board promo circa 1993.

Though undeniably unusual and not without complexity, this record is oddly accessible - no mean feat for something utterly unlike all the other records on our shelves. Approach with open ears and an open mind.

Patrick says: My kind of madness this! The wonderfully named DJ F16 Falcon fires up with hardware and hooks us up with a long EP / mini LP of Balearic industrial bliss. Hints of dancehall lend a tropical flavour to proceedings, as the Frenchman lets loose on the samplers, drum machines and DX7. This is the new sound!

                            House Of Sugar

(Sandy) Alex G, aka singer, songwriter and musician Alex Giannascoli, announces new album ‘House of Sugar’. The album is the Philadelphian’s ninth overall and third for Domino.

Giannascoli worked closely with Jacob Portrait, who mixed both ‘Rocket’ and 2015’s ‘Beach Music’ and helped to balance each of ‘House of Sugar’s dense, multi-faceted tracks. As the product of extended focus and planning, ‘House of Sugar’ emerges as Giannascoli’s most meticulous, cohesive album yet: a statement of artistic purpose, showing off his ear for both persistent earworms and shifting textures and the out-there sonic adventurism that’s made previous (Sandy) Alex G records so singular.

Barry says: From twisted, Beck-y ballads to euphoric synth-led stormers, Alex G has always had an uncanny knack for writing a tune and these richly orchestrated, beautifully constructed off-piste tunes show more and more ability in every passing album. This stuff is properly gorgeous ; heartfelt, soaring and emotive works of genius. Spellbinding from the outset.

10" Vinyl - (500) copies Limited Edition cut at 33rpm. This double A-side is the result of a series of sessions that took place throughout 2017, when Gary collaborated with producer Mike Bennett.

Cocoa Sugar, announced in November 2017 that Young Fathers had a brand new album and it has been highly anticipated since. The trio – Alloysious Massaquoi, Graham ‘G’ Hastings and Kayus Bankole – marked the news by previewing a brand-new song, ‘Lord’ and a subsequent accompanying video. Just like their previous standalone 2017 single ‘Only God Knows’ (written for the Trainspotting T2 film and described by director Danny Boyle as “the heartbeat of the film”), ‘Lord’ provided an enticing glimpse of what to expect from Young Fathers’ third full album; something typically unique and exhilarating, but leaner, more muscular and self-assured than ever before. Cocoa Sugar sees Young Fathers operating with a newfound clarity and direction, and is without doubt their most confident and complete statement to date.

Millie says: Long awaited but is now finally here, Cocoa Sugar is refreshingly original as their new sound is bold and irresistibly good.

Fake Sugar’ is the debut album from the critically acclaimed vocalist Beth Ditto. The former lead singer of Indie Rock mainstay’s the ‘Gossip’, Ditto’s first solo album encompasses 12 tracks of driving blues, malt-shop pop, swooning rock and countrified soul, including the single ‘Fire’. In addition to releasing six acclaimed albums with the Gossip, Ditto has recorded with such artists as Blondie, disco legend Cerrone and drumstep DJ Netsky, collaborated with Jean Paul Gaultier on her eponymous plus-sized luxury clothing line, modeled for Marc Jacobs and appeared in Tom Ford's Oscar-nominated film, Nocturnal Animals. She’s also a newlywed, which has given her a fresh perspective on romance that informs several songs on Fake Sugar. "This is adulthood, baby," she quips. "You fought for marriage equality, now you gotta live in it."

                                Dubkasm Encounters Talisman

She Look Like Reggae (dubkasm Remix)

Bristol's Talisman here remixed by dub legends Dubkasm and taken from the killer new album "Don't Play With Fyah" (also available!). Coming correct with a sound system friendly version, Dubkasm push the dancehall flavour and propel the track through a hard steppers riddim. Sections of vocals are dubbed out and delayed while the mystic melodies circle overhead. Come with a powerful dub cut on side B, with militant snares and xxtra bass pressure. Top stuff.

                                  Talisman

                                  Don't Play With Fyah

The brand new album by Talisman features the studio expertise of legendary musician, producer, engineer and all round British reggae genius Dennis Bovell (Matumbi, Steel Pulse, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Aswad, Madness, Orange Juice, The Slits) who has taken the songs to the next level and given us the strongest British reggae album in years. Most bands with a history that stretches back four decades are content to go through the motions, their creative peak somewhere in the past; not Talisman. Their new album includes some of the strongest material they've ever recorded, with seven brand new songs and the corresponding dub counter parts; this is their finest album to date.

Cristobal and the Sea are a proper European union of a band, if ever there was one. The quartet hail from four corners of our diverse continent. They are: Alejandro Romero from Spain (bass/vox), João Seixas from Portugal (guitar/vox), Leïla Seguin from Corsica/France (flute/vox) and Josh Oldershaw from old Blighty (drums).

After signing to City Slang (Sinkane, Caribou, Junip, Lambchop) and releasing their debut EP ‘Peach Bells’ last year, the band spent the duration of February locked in Namouche studios in Lisbon (Portugal) working on their forthcoming debut album with producer Rusty Santos (Animal Collective, Owen Pallett, DJ Rashad, Ariel Pink). Entitled ‘Sugar Now’, the record is set for release later this year, with this new single ‘Sunset Of Our Troubles’ displaying the band’s mystical, dreamy & enticing sounds wonderfully, offering a little glimpse of what to expect from the forthcoming debut.

Young, enormously gifted, very charismatic and incredibly laid back, Cristobal And The Sea are devouring life as only the young and carefree know how.

Brown Sugar - Back To Black Edition

D'Angelo's debut album breathed new life into the mid-90s soul / R&B scene, taking inspiration from 70s soul classics, but reinvigorating the sound with hip hop swagger. Recorded using vintage instruments the album ushered in the more organic neo-soul sound, moving away from the crisp electronics of the late 80s / early 90s new jack swing era. Includes the smash hit "Brown Sugar" (has there been a better love song to Mary J?), a cover of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'", or the bluesy "Shit, Damn, Motherfucker". A perfect after hours soul seduction album.

This is the first time 'Brown Sugar' has been reissued since 2006!

                                    Pawws

                                    Sugar

Given the tendency of popstrels to emerge fully formed from the ether, the development of North-Londoner Pawws (aka singer-songwriter Lucy Taylor) has undoubtedly been a much-needed breath of fresh air. Describing her sound as “upsetting disco”, her work details trials of love lost and won.

Lucy started her career as a live session musician for Kele Okereke and also performed with the likes of MGMT. Her experiences with them led her to write her own tracks, recording them at home and posting them online under her adopted nom de plume. Her first releases gained her a huge amount of attention, heralding praise from the likes of NME and Billboard. Not long after releasing her debut single Time To Say Goodbye / Slow Love she signed a deal with Three Six Zero, a management company partnered with Roc Nation.

Sugar, her debut EP, is coloured by a subtlety of emotion and lingering nostalgia that encapsulates the maturity of her sound, all the while exploring the tempestuousness of relationships. “I guess the main theme of this EP is the what happens when you continue loving someone, even when you know it is bad for you,” she explains. “Although the EP is generally about the pitfalls of love I still think it has an element of hope to it, because you only take risks and end up in those situations when you’re open with your heart.”

Amazingly, but not unsurprisingly, these records still blow the roof off, reissues of the first two White Stripes singles, originally released in another millennium: This is a reissue of their second 7" release, two tracks, the B-side is 'Sugar Never Tasted So Good', an essential 45!!

                                        Neil Young

                                        Sugar Mountain

Recorded over two nights in November 1968 at The Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the "Sugar Mountain" album documents the launch of Neil Young's career as a solo artist following his departure from Buffalo Springfield just six months earlier. Captured on a TEAC two track tape recorder, the album offers a glimpse into the development of a legendary artist. The album includes songs that were written during his Buffalo Springfield tenure as well as newly written material that would appear on future solo albums. Included in the performance are several moments of witty, engaging banter that are highlighted in this album release. The Canterbury House shows were considered an experiment to see how Neil Young's solo performances would be received by an audience who knew him as part of the Buffalo Springfield band dynamic. The experience erased all doubts and set the stage from which his solo career was launched.

                                        Bossanova

                                        Hey, Sugar

From Vancouver Canada comes the debut full-length from amazing new band, Bossanova. Kurt Dahle from the New Pornographers and Josh Wells from Black Mountain join singer, guitarist, genius Chris Storrow. Echoes of Ian Curtis and New Order, with the psyche-delicism of Velvet Underground or even Donna Summer(!)

                                          The Cuban Heels

                                          Mr Brannam

Bristol five piece The Cuban Heels release their excellent second single. "Mr Brannam" is a musical hybrid of ELO's "Mister Blue Sky" and Razorlight's "Golden Touch" which may sound a bit dodgy, but it's actually a rather good pop song! Expect big things from these fellas!

                                            John Cowan

                                            Always Take Me Back

John Cowan was in the legendary group New Grass Revival, joining in 1974. Along with Sam Bush, Pat Flynn and Bela Fleck, New Grass Revival took the acoustic music world by storm over the next few years. Now as a solo artist he's still producing top quality rock roots for the Sugar Hill label and this is his brand new album.

                                              Aloha

                                              Sugar

Aloha's second album takes post-rock a la Tortoise and Trans Am and adds emo stylings like the Promise Ring but then injects it with the prog time changes of a Midwest King Crimson. There's some sublime vibraphone and guitar interplay and the instrumental invention never fails to produce some of the most beautiful sounds and ensemble playing.

With big name acts like the Gourds, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell and Townes Van Zandt on their roster "From Hell To Breakfast - A Taste of Sugar Hill's Texas Singer-Songwriters" was going to be good - and it is.

                                                  The Houston Kid

Self-produced by Rodney Crowell, "The Houston Kid" is a labour of love. He's poured so much of himself into the songs, most of which have a genuine autobiographical feel about them. Full of heartfelt moments and superb vocal performances. Destined to become one of the Americana albums of the year.

                                                    Chris Thile

Not All Who Wander Are Lost

Something of a child prodigy (he released his first album at 13) Chris Thile has blossomed into a master musician. With another solo record and the phenomenal success of his band Nickel Creek, Chris is now a highly regarded mandolin virtuoso. Along with guest artists Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Byron House and others, Thile has produced a wonderful contemporary instrumental album with playing and musicianship of the highest quality.
