Kristin Hersh

Sugar On Blackstone

A darker yet delicately rendered work from Kristin Hersh, 'Sugar On Blackstone' explores life and death, enrichment and poverty, and the small but defining moments of childhood that continue to echo through adult life. Deeply personal and emotionally expansive, the album reflects on the lasting bonds between musicians, family and friends, and the way certain sounds, places and memories can suddenly bring someone vividly back into focus.

Recorded at Stable Sound Studios earlier this year, Hersh is joined by longtime collaborators Rob Ahlers (50FOOTWAVE) on drums and cellist Pete Harvey (Throwing Muses). The result is a stark yet warm collection of songs that balances fragility with force, intimacy with tension.

Rooted in Providence, Rhode Island, 'Sugar On Blackstone' draws heavily from Hersh’s reflections on home, displacement and memory. Revisiting the streets and parks of her childhood, the record traces the emotional weight of returning to familiar places shaped by grief, survival and resilience. The album’s title references Blackstone Boulevard and Hope Street in Providence, locations that become symbolic throughout the record of both loss and endurance.

Written in the aftermath of personal tragedy and against the backdrop of constant travel, wildfires and restless movement across America, the album carries an unsettled atmosphere throughout. Yet within that darkness, Hersh finds moments of tenderness and connection.

A poignant and expansive record that radiates strength in vulnerability, 'Sugar On Blackstone' stands as another essential entry in Kristin Hersh’s acclaimed and ever-evolving body of work.

Your favourite (probably) edits crew, Local Sugar Diggers, aka the trio of sonic sculptors that are Scruscru, Tony Lavrutz and Los Protos all come together here on a new 7" offshoot label from the Soul Service. The a-side cut 'Rave w Polsce' is a full-fat funker with deep cut grooves that roll on rubbery bass and soar with rasping wind leads. Plenty is going on wherever you listen and it all serves to get you moving. 'Otra Ritmo' is an immediate portal to a communal get down somewhere sun-baked and lush with green in South America. The horns, the freewheeling percussion and the loosely assembled rhythm are all irresistible invitations to cut loose.

Sugar Minott

I'm Still Here B/w I'm Still Here (Version)

The dream team of Sugar Minott and Victor Axelrod returns with a deep rub-a-dub reggae take on The Notation’s low rider classic, 'I’m Still Here'. Shortly after falling in love with the song via a 45 mix from Gabe Roth, Axelrod received a serendipitous message from the late great Minott saying he was in town and ready to work.

Sugar's effortlessly soulful vocals coupled with Axelrod and Co's sweet and spacious groove, transform the Notation's track into a slow , sticky revelation of love that's actually stable. The perfect soundtrack for discerning soirees and those moments where you have one foot out the door but need a moment of reflection.

Soul Sugar Meets Dub Shepherds Feat. Jolly Joseph

Superfreak

After the success of their first collaborative album 'Blue House Rockin’', Soul Sugar and Dub Shepherds reunited at the Blue House Studio for a new analog-heavy recording session.

'Super Freak' is the first single from these sessions: a fiery 70s-style reggae reinterpretation of Rick James’ classic. Led by Jolly Joseph’s signature falsetto, it rides a heavyweight bass line, playful reggae groove, and warm layers of organ, piano, guitar, and Mini Moog, all recorded live on vintage gear.

The journey continues at Bat Records Studio, where Dub Shepherds apply their trademark “hard mix” on 24-track tape, bending sound, space, and rhythm into a deep dub sorcery.

This 7-inch 45 rpm single features both vocal and dub versions and paves the way for the forthcoming album 'Blue House Rockin’ Vol. 2'.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: One of those records you didn't think you needed until you heard it. Could have gone so much worse, but Soul Sugar and Dub Shepherd manage to maintain credibility (as well as x10 echo chamber points for the dub) as they cover the Rick James classic with surprisingly devastating results.

Sugar

House Of Dead Memories / Long Live Love

Formed in 1992 by Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü) alongside bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis, Sugar quickly made their mark with the acclaimed debut 'Copper Blue' — hailed as one of the defining albums of the ’90s for its fusion of sharp melodic hooks and raw guitar power. Follow-up releases 'Beaster' and 'File Under: Easy Listening' cemented the band’s reputation before they disbanded in 1995.

Now, thirty years on, Sugar have reformed, announcing new live dates including three nights at New York’s Webster Hall and two at London’s O₂ Kentish Town Forum. To mark the occasion, they’ve unveiled two brand-new songs — 'House of Dead Memories' and 'Long Live Love' — now available for the first time on black 7” vinyl.

File Under Easy Listening - The Singles (RSD26 EDITION)

THIS IS A RECORD STORE DAY 2026 EXCLUSIVE, LIMITED TO ONE PER PERSON.

Following the classic Copper Blue and the dynamic Beaster, it’s fair to say that Sugar’s File Under: Easy Listening was somewhat underappreciated upon its release. In hindsight, though, that judgment was premature. What stands today is a gem of ‘90s alternative rock—a compelling evolution of the band’s sound, rich with the melodic power and emotional depth that defined Sugar at their best.

Arriving as the band reunites for live shows three decades on, this new 3LP box set celebrates those singles in full—complete with faithfully restored artwork and tracklistings on 12" vinyl. It stands as the perfect companion to the recently released Copper Blue – The Singles Collection, together charting the enduring legacy of one of the most influential bands of the 1990s.

Emily Breeze

Rats In Paradise

Bristol's acid-tongued empress of the tart one-liner Emily Breeze releases her new album 'Rats In Paradise' - a joy-ridden masterpiece of, danceable, laugh-out-loud synth-pop pathos, sparkling with brittle witticisms. Emily Breeze is one of the UK's leading underground/cult artists. Known for her distinct brand of pop noir which combines a punk attitude, powerful performance and a dark sense of humor.

Lead single 'Fun' sets the tone magnificently. Over a stonking sweaty groove our nihilistic heroine mocks her own tendency to always put pleasure before business. 'Dating A Model' marries a gorgeous melody with a savagely funny pen-portrait of an idealised partner, served with a side of weapons-grade sass and supporting cast of jealous lovers and cocaine communists. "Vulgar as leopard print / cheap as confetti"' is just one stand-out line among dozens on 'Forever Money', a wistful slow-burner referencing everything from Sinatra to cheap corner-shop wine and Only Fools And Horses. "I had also wanted to shoehorn Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses' immortal line 'This time next year, we'll be millionaires' into a song for a while, so that made it into the chorus," explains Emily. "I was thinking about FairyTale of New York, with those characters who have that sort of tragic delusional hope that I find so romantic and relatable."

As ever, Emily Breeze is at her brilliant best balancing the prosaic life of a party girl with high-minded allusions to the great cosmic dance. "The ideal listening situation for Rats in Paradise could be when you have just bet and lost your house and car and kids on a horse and you are lighting up a Hamlet Cigar thinking ahhhhhh fuck it, never mind.”

A world in which deadbeats, dreamers and beautiful losers are dancing through the night to a soundtrack of prom night synth pop, obnoxious rock and gothic disco. Whip-smart, vituperative pop from the 'poet laureate of glamorous wastrels'

Soul Sugar Meets Dub Shepherds Feat. Jolly Joseph

Give Me Your Love (Love Song)

Soul Sugar meets Dub Shepherds featuring Jolly Joseph “Give Me Your Love (Love Song)”

Curtis Mayfield is every soul music fan favorite, the beauty of his songs, his falsetto voice poetry and social engagement made him one of the most particular voices of the 70’s, it’s not surprising that many of his songs have been covered by the sweetest voices of Jamaica. It’s been told that his group The Impressions were a notable influence on Bob Marley and The Wailers, who modelled their singing/harmony style on them and in part borrowed their look …

Guillaume Metenier aka Soul Sugar loves doing reggae version of soul songs and has previously released quite a few gems in the genre featuring Jamaican rising star Leo Carmichael on vocals, with songs like Timmy Thomas “Why Can’t We Live Together”, Marvin Gaye “I Want You”, Luther Vandross classic “Never Too Much”, and already a magnificent cover of Curtis “The Makings Of You”…

Fast forward to 2024 this time around Guillaume and his vintage keyboards armoury teams up with the Dub Shepherds crew composed of singer and multi instrumentalist Jolly Joseph, Dr Charty on bass and Jahno on drums to deliver a full album of orignal songs and covers captured live in studio on analog gear. The reggae version of Curtis Mayfield classic “Give Me Your Love” is the first single from the forthcoming album “Soul Sugar meets Dub Shepherds - Blue House Rockin’ ” due for release in September. This 7" pressing, with a heavy dub mix on the B side, gives us a real flavour of the project. Lilting guitars, languid b-line, sunshine chords - a perfectly executed reggae cover version of one of the best soul tunes ever made. Simply unmissable!

The recordings were mixed by the Dub Shepherds at Bat Records studio on 24 tracks analog tape machine.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Festival season means reggae-soul mash-ups a plenty. It's not just Taggy Matcher and Mato who are the dons at this business, here Soul Sugar meets Dub Shepherds for an exquisite take on the Curtis Mayfield classic.

Iraina Mancini

Undo The Blue (Beyond The Wizards Sleeve Re-Animation) / Sugar High (Saint Etienne Remix)

Needle Mythology, the label founded by music writer, author and broadcaster Pete Paphides, is thrilled to announce the signing of the eagerly anticipated debut album by London singer-songwriter and renowned DJ Iraina Mancini. Iraina’s singular pop vision will be known to regular listeners of 6 Music, where her singles ‘Undo The Blue’, ‘Deep End’, ‘Shotgun’ and ‘Do It (You Stole The Rhythm)’ have all been enthusiastically embraced. Iraina's obsession with music stretches back into her early childhood, much of which was spent absorbing her parents’ collection of old 45s, in particular her dad’s Northern Soul records – an alternative education which meant that, by her early 20s, she was a familiar presence in the DJ booth at many discerning London club nights. Her love of French ye-ye, British freakbeat, Brazilian bossa nova, soul, and Turkish psych will be well-known to regular listeners of her Soho Radio show.

Having always sung from a young age, Iraina embarked on a string of collaborators such as Jagz Kooner (Sabres Of Paradise), Sunglasses For Jaws (Miles Kane) and Simon Dine (Paul Weller, Noonday Underground) which truly saw her find her metier as a songwriter, conjuring melodies that stand shoulder to shoulder alongside her impeccable influences. Iraina describes her first single for Needle Mythology ‘Cannonball’ as “a celebration of that moment when you meet someone you really fall for and it knocks you for six. It can be a bit scary, but you’ve just got to go with what your intuition is telling you.”

Written with Simon Dine, the vertiginous heart-in-mouth abandon of the song perfectly mirrors the circumstances that brought it into being. Iraina cites Jacqueline Taïeb’s 1967 single 7h du Matin as an early inspiration for the song: “There’s such a great energy about that song. Her vocal is amazing and all those stops and starts that grab your attention.”

“This is an artist I absolutely love, one of our rising stars at 6Music.“ Lauren Laverne BBC 6Music.

“Iraina seizes on the best aspects of the past, blurring those impeccable 60s and 70s influences with a touch of modernity.” Clash.

“Full of femme fatale poise and swooning chanteuse flourishes.” The Times.

Hand Habits

Sugar The Bruise

Hand Habits, the project of Los Angeles-based musician Meg Duffy (they/them),presents a new collection of songs titled Sugar The Bruise.

Inspired by month-long songwriting class Duffy taught in the summer of 2021, they re-discovered, with newfound clarity, the generative capacity of embracing the unknown, and how essential collaboration and improvisation are for accessing the indescribable.

Working with Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic, Art Feynman) and Philip Weinrobe (Adrienne Lenker, Cass McCombs), Duffy surrendered to the present moment, trusting that whatever sounds and words emerged were meant to emerge. With additional production, engineering and arranging from Jeremy Harris, Duffy created something which, in their words, “turned out nothing like I’d imagined it would.”

Ennio Morricone

Senza Sapere Niente Di Lei (Segreto #5) (RSD23 EDITION)

THIS IS A RECORD STORE DAY 2023 EXCLUSIVE, LIMITED TO ONE PER PERSON.

Senza Sapere Niente di Lei (1969, Luigi Comencini) is one of the first scores composed by Ennio Morricone for a Giallo film, just ahead of the great season of the cult Italian thrilling genre forged by Dario Argento. 12" yellow 1LP, gatefold Morricone's score has never been issued on vinyl. It is one of his most ethereal scores, with a sweet and delicate theme unfolding in a lullaby to the rhythm of a valzer. Think lounge-jazz to experimental music. The final result is a sensual and suave sound that matches the quintessential morbid style of Giallo cinema

Hudson Mohawke

Cry Sugar

Hudson Mohawke’s third album, ‘Cry Sugar’, deepens his practice of producing motivational music for club goers - uplifting the debauchery and inspiring many through his own brand of anthemic maximalism.

Trading in his lineage in dark UK back alleys filled with Glaswegian antipathy for studio sessions with blazed Pavarotti-inspired tenors and drunk string quartets, Mohawke has dialled in an ongoing fascination with melding high and low culture. Afterall, he is indeed the architect for the high peaks of high-definition trap production that became embellished in the 2010s - a style that has been appropriated in everything from beer can-littered college parties to Arby’s commercials.

American decadence, then, becomes a stage forhis music to thrive - where the DJ booth becomes a composer’s podium for him to conduct the tense drama between debauchery and apocalypse, the ‘mise-en-scene’ of club culture in 2022.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Technicoloured, wide-screen bass and synth luminary Hudson Mohawke returns with more of his 5D, extra-fidelity sonic explosions. Taking cues off everything from opera to trap, there's few that push the envelope in such grandiose ways.

Brown Sugar

Black Pride

‘Black Pride’ is the seminal Lovers Rock tune from Brown Sugar, pressed loud for the first ever time on this new one-off press edition 12” on Soul Jazz Records.

Brown Sugar formed in London in 1976, made up of teenagers Pauline Catlin, Caron Wheeler and Carol Simms. After Brown Sugar, Caron Wheeler became known worldwide as the vocalist in Soul II Soul, and Carol Simms launched a successful solo career under the name Kofi.

‘Black Pride’ was originally released on the Lovers Rock label, a fledgling reggae label formed by musicians Dennis Bovell and John Kpiaye and producer Dennis Harris. Brown Sugar were unique - not only were they one of the most important of the first wave of lovers rock groups, they were also the only group who managed to successfully blend together a reggae roots consciousness with a lovers rock sensibility. Benedict Benjamin is Ben Rubinstein, formerly of The Mariner’s Children and Peggy Sue. After writing and recording his debut, Ben turned to a more full band sound for his second album "Truant", which was written just before and after becoming a father and is about the panic and pragmatism of expecting and then becoming a parent. The early sixties influence of The Everly Brothers is still present in the melodies, but now there is an urgency and grit to the instrumentation that sits somewhere between The Velvet Underground and Tom Petty, or more recent forbears such as Kevin Morby and Angel Olsen. Both "Night Songs" and "Truant" were produced by Dan Blackett (Landshapes, Bella Union.

Cocoa Sugar, announced in November 2017 that Young Fathers had a brand new album and it has been highly anticipated since. The trio – Alloysious Massaquoi, Graham ‘G’ Hastings and Kayus Bankole – marked the news by previewing a brand-new song, ‘Lord’ and a subsequent accompanying video. Just like their previous standalone 2017 single ‘Only God Knows’ (written for the Trainspotting T2 film and described by director Danny Boyle as “the heartbeat of the film”), ‘Lord’ provided an enticing glimpse of what to expect from Young Fathers’ third full album; something typically unique and exhilarating, but leaner, more muscular and self-assured than ever before. Cocoa Sugar sees Young Fathers operating with a newfound clarity and direction, and is without doubt their most confident and complete statement to date.

Fake Sugar’ is the debut album from the critically acclaimed vocalist Beth Ditto. The former lead singer of Indie Rock mainstay’s the ‘Gossip’, Ditto’s first solo album encompasses 12 tracks of driving blues, malt-shop pop, swooning rock and countrified soul, including the single ‘Fire’. In addition to releasing six acclaimed albums with the Gossip, Ditto has recorded with such artists as Blondie, disco legend Cerrone and drumstep DJ Netsky, collaborated with Jean Paul Gaultier on her eponymous plus-sized luxury clothing line, modeled for Marc Jacobs and appeared in Tom Ford's Oscar-nominated film, Nocturnal Animals. They are: Alejandro Romero from Spain (bass/vox), João Seixas from Portugal (guitar/vox), Leïla Seguin from Corsica/France (flute/vox) and Josh Oldershaw from old Blighty (drums).

After signing to City Slang (Sinkane, Caribou, Junip, Lambchop) and releasing their debut EP ‘Peach Bells’ last year, the band spent the duration of February locked in Namouche studios in Lisbon (Portugal) working on their forthcoming debut album with producer Rusty Santos (Animal Collective, Owen Pallett, DJ Rashad, Ariel Pink). Entitled ‘Sugar Now’, the record is set for release later this year, with this new single ‘Sunset Of Our Troubles’ displaying the band’s mystical, dreamy & enticing sounds wonderfully, offering a little glimpse of what to expect from the forthcoming debut.

Young, enormously gifted, very charismatic and incredibly laid back, Cristobal And The Sea are devouring life as only the young and carefree know how.

D'Angelo

Brown Sugar - Back To Black Edition

D'Angelo's debut album breathed new life into the mid-90s soul / R&B scene, taking inspiration from 70s soul classics, but reinvigorating the sound with hip hop swagger. Recorded using vintage instruments the album ushered in the more organic neo-soul sound, moving away from the crisp electronics of the late 80s / early 90s new jack swing era. Includes the smash hit "Brown Sugar" (has there been a better love song to Mary J?), a cover of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'", or the bluesy "Shit, Damn, Motherfucker". A perfect after hours soul seduction album.

This is the first time 'Brown Sugar' has been reissued since 2006!

Pawws

Sugar

Given the tendency of popstrels to emerge fully formed from the ether, the development of North-Londoner Pawws (aka singer-songwriter Lucy Taylor) has undoubtedly been a much-needed breath of fresh air. Describing her sound as “upsetting disco”, her work details trials of love lost and won.

Lucy started her career as a live session musician for Kele Okereke and also performed with the likes of MGMT. Her experiences with them led her to write her own tracks, recording them at home and posting them online under her adopted nom de plume. Her first releases gained her a huge amount of attention, heralding praise from the likes of NME and Billboard. Not long after releasing her debut single Time To Say Goodbye / Slow Love she signed a deal with Three Six Zero, a management company partnered with Roc Nation.

Sugar, her debut EP, is coloured by a subtlety of emotion and lingering nostalgia that encapsulates the maturity of her sound, all the while exploring the tempestuousness of relationships. “I guess the main theme of this EP is the what happens when you continue loving someone, even when you know it is bad for you,” she explains. “Although the EP is generally about the pitfalls of love I still think it has an element of hope to it, because you only take risks and end up in those situations when you’re open with your heart.”

The Sugarman Three

What The World Needs Now

You know that little something you’ve been missing but can’t quite wrap your noodle around what in the world it could be? This is something of an epidemic here in sunny Bushwick Brooklyn, and if the fan mail and phone calls don’t deceive, which they never do - this is happening worldwide folks. But don’t waste another second pondering this proverbial hole in your soul, because Daptone has the solution.

After years of research, 10 to be exact, it came to our attention that everyone’s favorite funky instrumentalists, The Sugarman 3 hadn’t released a new LP in some time. Well, of course!!! How could we have been so neglectful to our fans? Within hours of this epiphany Daptone Brass had the boys back in the studio. With only 8 tape tracks, a handful of peanuts, and a bottle of high proof Dutch Schnapps these gentlemen flexed their musical maturity - writing and tracking the entire album in four days.

There were tears shed, and blood spilled over those four fateful sessions, but we’re happy to report that what went down is some of the finest instrumental tunes ever laid to tape. Dig the masterful renditions of favorites such as: The Bacharach penned opus, and title track of the album “What the World Needs Now Is Love” - quite a fitting title considering this record is practically saving the world from incomplete-itis. As well as JJ Jackson’s soul classic “It’s Alright” - and for all you Bean Town enthusiasts, “Dirty Water” by the Standells (take it easy Mr. + Mrs. Know-it-alls, we know they’re from LA). And if that ain’t enough to make you wanna Boogaloo down Troutman St, surely their newly crafted originals will have your tail feathers shakin’ all over.

Neil Young

Sugar Mountain

Recorded over two nights in November 1968 at The Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the "Sugar Mountain" album documents the launch of Neil Young's career as a solo artist following his departure from Buffalo Springfield just six months earlier. Captured on a TEAC two track tape recorder, the album offers a glimpse into the development of a legendary artist. The album includes songs that were written during his Buffalo Springfield tenure as well as newly written material that would appear on future solo albums. Included in the performance are several moments of witty, engaging banter that are highlighted in this album release. The Canterbury House shows were considered an experiment to see how Neil Young's solo performances would be received by an audience who knew him as part of the Buffalo Springfield band dynamic. The experience erased all doubts and set the stage from which his solo career was launched.

Bossanova

Hey, Sugar

From Vancouver Canada comes the debut full-length from amazing new band, Bossanova. Kurt Dahle from the New Pornographers and Josh Wells from Black Mountain join singer, guitarist, genius Chris Storrow. Echoes of Ian Curtis and New Order, with the psyche-delicism of Velvet Underground or even Donna Summer(!)

The Cuban Heels

Mr Brannam

Bristol five piece The Cuban Heels release their excellent second single. "Mr Brannam" is a musical hybrid of ELO's "Mister Blue Sky" and Razorlight's "Golden Touch" which may sound a bit dodgy, but it's actually a rather good pop song! Expect big things from these fellas!

Sugarcult

Start Static

Sugarcult may look like the Jam but they sound like typical Californi-yay surf punks. Named after seven lesbians who lived across the hall from singer-guitarist Tim Pagnotta, the band have their own brand of clever wretchedness, constantly veering between hardcore and pop punk. The band subscribes to the don't-bore-us-get-to-the-chorus approach to power pop, fused with the spirit of 70s punk.

John Cowan

Always Take Me Back

John Cowan was in the legendary group New Grass Revival, joining in 1974. Along with Sam Bush, Pat Flynn and Bela Fleck, New Grass Revival took the acoustic music world by storm over the next few years. Now as a solo artist he's still producing top quality rock roots for the Sugar Hill label and this is his brand new album.

Aloha

Sugar

Aloha's second album takes post-rock a la Tortoise and Trans Am and adds emo stylings like the Promise Ring but then injects it with the prog time changes of a Midwest King Crimson. There's some sublime vibraphone and guitar interplay and the instrumental invention never fails to produce some of the most beautiful sounds and ensemble playing.

Various Artists

From Hell To Breakfast - A Taste Of Sugar Hill's Texas Singer-Songwriters

With big name acts like the Gourds, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell and Townes Van Zandt on their roster "From Hell To Breakfast - A Taste of Sugar Hill's Texas Singer-Songwriters" was going to be good - and it is.

Rodney Crowell

The Houston Kid

Self-produced by Rodney Crowell, "The Houston Kid" is a labour of love. He's poured so much of himself into the songs, most of which have a genuine autobiographical feel about them. Full of heartfelt moments and superb vocal performances. Destined to become one of the Americana albums of the year.

Chris Thile

Not All Who Wander Are Lost

Something of a child prodigy (he released his first album at 13) Chris Thile has blossomed into a master musician. With another solo record and the phenomenal success of his band Nickel Creek, Chris is now a highly regarded mandolin virtuoso. Along with guest artists Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Byron House and others, Thile has produced a wonderful contemporary instrumental album with playing and musicianship of the highest quality.
