Soul Jazz Records Presents Studio One Funk - 2026 Reissue

Soul Jazz Records celebrate 25 years of working in partnership with Studio One with brand new editions of five of their best-selling classic Studio One collections, released as special edition one-off pressing coloured double vinyl editions.

‘STUDIO ONE FUNK’ is made up of rare and unreleased reggae funk from the vaults of Studio One. Ever since the birth of funk in America, the sound has been an ever-present ingredient in the melting pot of Studio One’s musical output.

The music here is a combination of originals and USA soul and funk covers. Jackie Mittoo shows his appreciation for Booker T and The MGs, the studio group at Memphis’s famous Stax Records, with a previously unreleased version of ‘Hang ‘Em High’. Booker T’s superfunky ‘Melting Pot’ is also covered by the little-known Underground Vegetables.

Other covers include Isaac Hayes’ classic ‘Shaft’ by Cedric Brooks - another unreleased gem, straight from the master tapes. Motown gets a look in with Alton’s stripped-down version of the Spinners classic ‘It’s A Shame’, written by Stevie Wonder and Syreeta. James Brown is checked with the J.B.’s-inspired rare groove of Lee Arab’s ‘Now’. Lloyd Williams similarly does a fine Kingston-style version of the hardest working man in showbusiness on ‘Reggae Feet’.

Version-wise, we have ‘Idleberg’, Cedric Brooks’ tough instrumental cut to Horace Andy’s seminal ‘Skylarking’. Pablove Black’s cut of Sidewalk Doctor (aka Poco Tempo) is one of a handful of Studio One releases featuring Augustus Pablo’s trademark instrument, the melodica, played by Black himself.

Add to these original cuts from Studio One’s heavyweight session players, including Leroy Sibbles, Jackie Mittoo, Leroy Sibbles, Eric Frater, Richard Ace, Vin Gordon and more and you have one of the finest selections of reggae and funk you will ever hear.

This reissue marks the creation of Silver Apples Foundation, which is both a non profit organisation and new imprint whose mission is to honour the legacy wishes of Simeon Coxe to preserve the memory of Silver Apples by promoting electronic music and the setting up of an electronic music scholarship fund. This release will be followed later in the year with the long awaited Silver Apples biography, ‘Electronic Evocations', by music journalist and writer Kris Needs. This version of 'Oscillations' was the last ever recording by Simeon at his ChickenCoop studio in Fairhope Alabama in 2019 and captures how he liked to play it live. Studio Kosmische

Electronic Meditation For Inner Space Travel

Studio Kosmische’s music is rooted deeply in the ethos of the 1970s krautrock movement. Blending psychedelic instrumentation with a healthy disregard for conventional song form, this is music intended to encourage altered states. Primarily the solo project of musician and producer Dom Keen, usually working in collaboration with fellow musician and label mate Jonathan Parkes. Through Keen’s influences and ongoing collaborations, SK has carved out a niche within modern kosmische and psychedelic music, creating immersive journeys that blur the boundaries between inner and outer space.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: BOOM! Dom Keen's superb Studio Kosmische project returns for another selection of deeply evocative Harmonia-flavoured krautrock, wonderfully rich and almost dubby in parts, showing the true range of emotion that Keen and Parkes manage to eke out of their instruments. This time sees a much more loose, improvisational spirit, but results in something that feels a lot more organic while retaining the core spirit. Brilliant.

TRACK LISTING

2. In Search Of Magick
3. Golden Dunes
4. Esoteric Modulation

Pressed on DJ-friendly 12'' vinyl, complete with a printed love letter from Stockholm underground hero, Nasty Nate.

Fatboi Sharif & Child Actor

Crayola Circles

Backwoodz Studioz release 'Crayola Circles', a collaboration between rapper Fatboi Sharif and producer Child Actor. While both artists have long standing connections to Backwoodz, this album marks their first collaboration of any kind and breaks new artistic ground for all parties.

Sharif’s previous album, 'Decay', released on Backwoodz in 2023, was a haunting experimental rap masterpiece, an acid trip in a mental hospital. On 'Crayola Circles' Sharif trades menacing psychedelia for a simmering stew of blacklight expressionism, his verses slipping effortlessly through the swells and tides of Child Actor’s masterful production. No matter how uneasy the waves grow, Sharif is at ease, a truth teller whispering anti-riddles in your ear. This album feels like a new chamber for Child Actor, as well. The producer has been on an impressive run since dropping 'CINE'- a collaboration with rapper Cavalier- on Backwoodz in late 2024. Child Actor has shown up in the liner notes of everyone from Navy Blue ('The Sword & The Soaring') to Earl Sweatshirt ('Live, Laugh, Love') to ELUCID ('Revelator') to Open Mike Eagle ('Neighborhood Gods Unlimited'), to Ghais Guevara ('A Quest to Self-Mythologize'), amongst others. On 'Crayola Circles' Child Actor’s production is dynamic, shifting and sliding into new phases and movements in an instant. The beats are full and knotty, leaning into jazz and folk, while remaining tethered to the tender minimalism that is his signature. It’s a difficult balance for any producer, and here it is executed perfectly, placing us in a world of wood and brass, cowhide and undersea piano. On any other record, this soundscape would steal the show — and it very nearly does — but Sharif’s command never wavers, ever in control; a lucid dreamer in an induced coma.
There are no guests, no skits, and no interludes. There might not even be songs, instead 'Crayola Circles' seems akin to a great river; singular, traversing forest and jungle, mountain and valley, running from mouth to endless sea.

E L U C I D & Sebb Bash

I Guess U Had To Be There

Two turntables and a microphone. There is a truth in the clarity of that simple coda, a truth that also belies the breadth of what is possible within its confines. Sometimes you gotta get reminded. 'I Guess U Had To Be There', the new album from NYC rapper ELUCID and veteran producer Sebb Bash, is one of those ones. So fresh it sounds like it was made tomorrow, but bet money you could put this on in ’89 and get heads bopping.

There are moments in music when masters of their craft cross paths at the height of their respective powers—records like Madvillainy, Liquid Swords, Dr. Octagonecologyst, and Hell Hath No Fury—where the result is more than the sum of its parts. ELUCID and Sebb Bash find themselves in this heady, seemingly effortless ephemera on 'I Guess U Had To Be There'. Everything is both familiar and groundbreaking. The beats shift and flip under ELUCID’s feet but he tightropes it all, delivery nimble as a mountain goat, producer and rapper moving in perfect synchronization. Some shining stars make memorable appearances: billy woods, Breezly Brewin, Estee Nack, Shabaka Hutchings. But this is a two-man show, and the duo keep the spotlight where it belongs. 'I Guess U Had To Be There' is a captivating, convention-defying listen and a high-water mark for two of the best artists in the genre.

Studio Kosmische

'Crème Caramel B/w Salted Caramel

Next Feral Child off the blocks sees a monster of a double a side from long term label favourites, Studio Kosmische.

2 superb covers of the classic Cluster tune 'Caramel' from the legendary 1974 LP 'Zuckerzeit'. Recorded in January, both versions (entitled 'Crème Caramel' and 'Salted Caramel') are absolute beauties.

For a little background, over to SK mainman Dom Keen: SK is an experimental electronic project, rooted deeply, as the name suggests, in the ethos of German 1970s kosmische music. Blending drones, psychedelic instrumentation and sound design into immersive, otherworldly deep listening—this is music intended to encourage and accompany an altered state.

Primarily the solo project of British musician and producer Dom Keen, it also reflects collaborations with key contributors. Keen is also known for his work with The Hologram People and as a touring musician with Quantic and Death in Vegas. A close collaborator is Jonathan Parkes, founder of Dreamlord Recordings. Drawing on a background in sonic experimentation, Studio Kosmische channels the ethos of 1970s cosmic music—expansive synth textures, open structures, and a disregard for conventional song form.

This release serves as a tribute to two of kosmische’s founding figures, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius, of Cluster, the track “Caramel” originally appeared on the 1974 album Zuckerzeit”

Never Eclipsed: Dancehall From Philip Smart's HC&F Studio 1985-1996 LP

Following the well received "Prince Philip Presents..." 2xLP compilation from last year, here's a lovely overview of the second phase of Philip's career, as engineer & producer at his own studio, HC&F. These ten tracks comprise our favorites from his production catalog, spanning the mid '80s when the studio really got going, right up until 1996 and his last set of proper productions. The album holds a mix of well known classics like the Garnett Silk, lesser known album only cuts like the Frankie Paul, NY dancehall 12" staples like the Scion Success or Shelene, as well as some lesser known gems. We'd be remiss in not mentioning that this album also contains two previously unreleased cuts - a wicked mid '80s Tony Tuff, and the wild vocoder laden 1985 theme song for Philip's "Get Smart" radio show, which ran for many many years on New York University's WNYU radio station.

Anthony Naples returns with his seventh full length album, "In Studio Magic," comprised of ten new songs. A departure from the serene, dubbed out house off his last excursion; "In Studio Magic", moves in a more non-linear fashion, merging electro-acoustic elements and a dubwise sensibility into something resembling modern electro-avant-jazz! Still executed with the delicate finesse we've come to expect from this NYC legend; it's a seriously intriguing listening, allowing us access to a side of the producer's persona we haven't really been privy to before. Well worth a listen!

Recorded at The Black Ark in the mid-’70s with Lee “Scratch” Perry. These are unmissable recordings from the glory days of the genre.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: One of four utterly compelling and completely essential 10"s released from the golden era of The Black Ark. Just when you thought you'd heard all the Lee Perry mixes there was to hear, Studio 16 hit us with this salvo of roots and dub. The pressing and fidelity is ultra high, leaving us, as usual, scratching our heads as to how the Upsetter achieved such sonic majesty with such limited resources.

Axel Boman & Trensum Tribe

LUZ / Quest For Fire - In Dub!

Axel Boman’s critically acclaimed double album "LUZ/Quest For Fire from 2022 gets a remix & dub treatment from one of Scandinavia's finest reggae-and-beyond soundsystems, Trensum Tribe.

'Great, now they sound better that the originals' said Axel when he heard the remixed versions for the first time, excitedly starting to collect the best ones for an album. Having been heavily inspired by Mad Professor’s work for Massive Attack since a young age (listen to "No Protection" for example), a project like this had been a dream of Axel Boman's for decades. There is a certain freedom that comes with remixing, where you can step outside yourself as a producer and take risks and chances you might not in your own work, and Trensum Tribe really took an adventurous new path when they approached this music. On this homage to soundsystem and rave culture, jungle, dub, disco and house all become best friends in front of a huge stack of homemade speakers, standing tall on fresh dew in a Swedish forest on a cold summer night.

Spider Taylor

Surge Studio Music (Soundtrack)

The vinyl edition of Surge Studio Music gives punk and glam rock pioneer Spider Taylor's archival pornographic soundtracks the physical presence they deserve. Sourced from his 1985-86 work for Al Parker and Steve Scott's iconic Surge Studios, these tracks, which were crafted with drum machines, analogue synths and Steve Conrad's engineering, unfold with tactile depth. The reverb-soaked ambience of 'Rainforest,' the nocturnal pulse of 'Tech' and the sleazy, cinematic grooves take on a new dimension and highlight Taylor's adventurous blend of post-punk, synthwave and erotic atmosphere. Wrapped in Gwenael Rattke's striking artwork and with detailed liner notes, it's a definitive document of a lost queer musical world.

T. Rex

The Studio Albums 1970-1977

Having recorded as Tyrannosaurus Rex since the mid-1960s, frontman, lyricist, poet and guitarist Marc Bolan entered the new decade with a new sound, a new band and a new, foreshortened name – ‘T. Rex’. In the process, he became Britain’s first new superstar of the seventies, embarking upon a breathtaking run of hit singles and studio albums that demonstrated his restless muse and showcased constant genre-defying creativity.

1970’s ‘T. Rex’ came in the wake of the chart success of ‘Ride A White Swan’ and formed a sonic bridge between the Tyrannosaurus Rex sound and a new electric glam that would bring him superstardom. The follow up, 1971’s all-time classic ‘Electric Warrior’ followed, a classics-packed collection of songs that included ‘Life’s A Gas’, ‘Jeepster’, ‘Get It On’ and ‘Cosmic Dancer’.

1972’s ‘The Slider’ was released at the peak of T. Rex mania (“T.Rexstasy”!) and delivered two UK No. 1 singles in the form of ‘Telegram Sam’ and ‘Metal Guru’, while 1973’s ‘Tanx’ pushed all the glam faders into the red on one of the most exciting rock albums of the decade.

1974’s ‘Zinc Alloy’ saw Bolan’s interest on the move, into a frenetic, more electric-soul glam sound with the introduction of R&B influences including funky keyboards and the gospel-sounding ‘Cosmic Choir’. Moving on again, 1975’s ‘Bolan’s Zip Gun’ caught the prevailing zeitgeist, channelling Bolan’s sound at times with a proto=Punk back-to-basics approach.

1976’s gorgeous ‘Futuristic Dragon’ was a late T. Rex classic, a mature and confident collection of timeless hooks and effortless melodies (including the hit single ‘New York City’). Finally, on further chart singles like ‘I Love To Boogie’ and ‘Light Of Love’ the last studio album before Bolan’s untimely death, 1977’s ‘Dandy In The Underworld’ still stands as a reminder of a huge talent the music world lost way too soon.

"Stiletti City Tape Archives" is the fourth Stiletti-Ana album, showing off the Finnish mastermind’s talent for making electronic music that’s immediately inviting while generously rewarding the focused listener. Following stand-out work for labels like Public Possession and Höga Nord – not to mention all sorts of odd jobs within the Sex Tags multiverse – Stiletti-Ana presents his latest offering: eight irresistible jams cooked up in the hallowed halls of Helsinki’s Haista II studio.

Here, vintage and modern synths join forces with live drums and the occasional robot-voiced interjection, resulting in a body of work that’s dazzlingly off-kilter, rich in detail and instantly addictive. The artist himself states: “I think the music has a sense of urgency which relates to city life. Still,
Stiletti City is a small and cozy place, a bit freaky and not gentrified.” Stockholm label Studio Barnhus is delighted to invite fellow travelers into this secret town – welcoming, full of auditory surprises and gleefully hallucinatory.

Armand Hammer & The Alchemist

Haram - 2025 Repress

Looking back more than four years later at 'Haram', it is easier to see the forest for the trees. At the time, much of the attention fell on how this outsider duo would fare under the bright lights- which was fair, Armand Hammer had never done a single producer record before- and here they were working with a living legend. Now, with a little distance, it’s easier to see how Alchemist stepped out of his comfort zone to meet them where they were, and how all three artists then absconded for parts unknown. The flashbulb energy of 'Bring The Stars Out', asymmetric drone of 'Chicharrones', fugue-bounce of 'God’s Feet', and good luck finding analogues for 'Peppertree' or 'Stonefruit'. 'Haram' doesn’t sound like anything else in the ALC discography, nor in Armand Hammer’s, for that matter. Haram was a one-shot kill that somehow contained some of the most accessible work ELUCID and billy woods had ever done, as well as some of their most experimental, and it all sounded cohesive.

Needless to say, they didn’t do this alone; KAYANA’s golden voice upps the wattage on 'Black Sunlight', while Fielded’s sultry alto gets chopped and screwed on 'Aubergine'. Earl Sweatshirt’s cameo on the sun-soaked 'Falling Out the Sky' is already a classic. Curly Castro, Amani, and Quelle Chris all turn up the heat when called upon.

But since we are talking about retrospect here, the thing about 'Haram' isn’t that it still sounds as good as it did when it came out. The amazing thing is that it actually sounds even better than it did then. You don’t have to take our word for it either, run it up one time, with the lights low and something on ice, see if it doesn’t take you somewhere new, again.

Mercy

Armand Hammer and The Alchemist build worlds. Their first was 'Haram' and it remains locked in orbit, equal parts lush and foreboding. Their new one is called 'Mercy' and it’s made out of blood and empire, children’s laughter, unpaid parking tickets, and things that haven’t happened yet.

Rappers ELUCID and billy woods are joined on the mic by Earl Sweatshirt, Quelle Chris, Cleo Reed, Pink Siifu, Kapwani, and Silka. The Alchemist did everything else.

Marvin Gaye & Studio Rio

Sexual Healing

Following Mr Bongo's reissue of Studio Rio's exquisite Brazilian-infused take on Bill Withers' 'Lovely Day', which was one of the standout hits from last summer, we shine a light on another of their superb remakes

Masterminded and produced by the German, Grammy award- winning Berman Brothers, and using the same all-star cast behind the Bill Withers' reinterpretation, they put a joyous Brazilian twist on the Marvin Gaye classic 'Sexual Healing'. Rich in positivity and a pure end-of-the-night classic, this is another surefire winner to light up any occasion.

A project born out of Christian & Frank Berman's, aka the Berman Brothers, passion for Brazilian music, they had wondered what some of the all-time classic US soul songs would sound like if they had been recorded in Rio de Janeiro with the best Brazilian musicians. "The idea took root in the vibrant streets of Rio de Janeiro. Beyond the city's main carnival, countless neighbourhood block parties pulse with live samba drumming, colourful costumes, and a joyful mix of freedom, music, and cultural expression. The goal was to capture this spirit and channel it into Gaye's timeless hit," explain the Berman Brothers.

Heading to Rio in 2013, the brothers assembled a select team of top- level Brazilian musicians including many sidemen to one of Brazil's most influential composers, Tom Jobim. They brought in Torcuato Mariano, renowned for his work with Djavan and Gilberto Gil, to arrange the songs, drawing inspiration from classic '60s / '70s Brazilian samba recordings for this new remake. Another addition was Pretinho da Serrinha, one of Brazil's most acclaimed samba musicians, who worked with Seu Jorge, Caetano Veloso, and Lulu Santos. His masterful percussion and cavaquinho playing gave the track its irresistible summer energy.

Having spoken to Sony about their idea, they were given access to the multitrack tapes, meaning they could present Marvin's original vocal take with this reimagined Brazilian flavour. "Our goal was to create an authentic samba recording to accompany Marvin Gaye's vocal performance. We wanted to honour the original while creating something fresh - hoping people would feel as if the song had been recorded this way from the very beginning".

Remoulding Gaye's iconic lovers' anthem from 1982, the brothers flipped 'Sexual Healing' into a joy-filled, smouldering samba-driven beauty. It's a breezy, light-hearted remake, with Marvin's sublime soul delivery sitting perfectly amidst the shuffling cavaquinho and cuica groove. Uplifting horn stabs, building melodies, and heartfelt harmonies elevate the song to an ecstatic climax.

Now pressed to 45 for the first time, with the instrumental on the B-side, this single is the perfect cut to ignite the party or as that feel-good closer that will send everyone home on a high.

Preservation & Gabe 'Nandez

Sortilège

Sortilège is the new album from esteemed producer and DJ Preservation and ascendant talent Gabe ‘’Nandez. The two artists first linked on Aethiopes, Preservation’s 2022 collaboration with billy woods, where Nandez was featured alongside Boldy James on one of the album’s standout tracks. “Sauvage” became the catalyst for Sortilège, as the New Orleans-based producer and New York-based rapper gradually began exchanging ideas—first long distance, then in February 2024, when Nandez flew to New Orleans for two weeks, ready to work.

“It was smooth, very synergetic,” ‘Nandez explains. “We listened to mad music—Boot Camp Clik, Scaramanga, Cuban Linx—and I was asking questions about all types of shit, trying to soak up game and history, which I did.”

The two also bonded over their shared francophone ancestry: Preservation is half French and ‘Nandez is half Malian. These connections made their way into the music as well, via both aesthetics and sample sources, and that sort of exchange courses through Sortilège, bridging the generational, geographical, and cultural gaps between the two artists with a record that feels a world unto itself. Esoteric, yet blunt and uncomplicated as a fistfight, Sortilège erases the line between urbane and urban. It’s a movie in a lucid dream, A Clockwork Négritude projected against the wall of a construction site. Mixed-use residential.

Tracing this arc, fellow travelers Armand Hammer, Koncept Jack$on, Ze Nkoma Mpaga Ni Ngoko, and billy woods all make appearances. Oh, and there are drums everywhere: drums that will rattle a hooptie and drums that whisper threats. Somehow, over the course of 14 tracks, Preservation seems to find his way to every instrument imaginable—yet each beat has room to breathe. Amidst this breakbeat symphony, ‘Nandez’s unmistakable baritone glides purposefully, ever forward, a bristling warship in troubled waters. Every time the bass thumps, ‘Nandez counterpunches. This is a record for heavyweight speakers and clunky headphones.

Studio Electrophonique

Studio Electrophonique

Studio Electrophonique, the solo project of singer-songwriter James Leesley, is one of the most original musical outfits to emerge from Sheffield's current independent scene. Taking the name 'Studio Electrophonique' from an old analogue recording studio in Sheffield, Leesley has already released two celebrated EPs under this moniker. He will release later this year his eponymous debut album on Paris-based label Valley of Eyes Records. It is produced by Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good, The Bad and The Queen and The Magnetic North).

James Leesley grew up in Handsworth, Sheffield where week-day evenings were spent kicking a football around grassy urban edgelands. At the weekends, the social clubs with their glitter balls, comedians, cockle sellers and sequin-suited cabaret singers brought a touch of glamour to this hilltop suburb on the fringe of an industrial northern city. The stage was not some far-off place. Dreams could be made and broken under bright lights and by the brusk tones of a bingo caller.

The classic songs, slap back echo and house organ sounds of the social club scene are in Leesley’s blood. His work draws inspiration from the heartfelt melodies of songsmiths like Carole King and Burt Bacharach with the smokey tenderness of vocalists such as Dusty Springfield and Elvis. Add to that his enthusiasm for American literature and the surrealism of 60s French cinema.

After stumbling across an old 4-track tape machine at a local Bring and Buy, Leesley used it to distill these influences into something that is spare in its sound but full in its intention and emotion. In 2019 he released Buxton Palace Hotel on Violette Records, an EP of six odes to the mystery of modern romance, followed in 2022 by the Happier Things EP. Leesley found a fan in Richard Hawley who he joined on a tour of the UK and Ireland and, under the Studio Electrophonique name, he played at the prestigious End of the Road and Green Man Festivals. He was also invited by French superstar Etienne Daho to support him at the legendary Olympia in Paris. Leesley received airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music (Steve Lamacq, Gideon Coe, Mark Radcliffe, Stuart Maconie & Tom Robinson), BBC Radio 3 (Unclassified) and Soho Radio (Pete Paphides).

After a chance meeting with Simon Tong, the pair bonded over a love of The Velvet Underground, The Byrds, Barry Hines’ books, Jake Thackray, Blackpool's North Pier, and late night attic-darts. At Tong’s home studio in South London they added an assortment of vintage guitars and Casio keyboards (Pipe Organ mode) to fragments of lyrics Leesley had scribbled on the back of betting slips and bus tickets.

The result is an 11-track album that finds big feelings in small details. Loneliness, beauty, longing and loss all linger in the everyday occurrences: the moments of miscommunication over tea and eggs, the neatly folded pyjamas left by a long-gone lover, the raindrops on the top deck window of a No. 52 bus, the rain-sodden faded glamour of a cheap seaside getaway. Captured on a Tascam reel to reel, Leesley’s mesmerising debut promises to whisk any listener away to a warm, intimate and day-dreamy place.

Blending analog warmth with organic textures, raw cuts that moves from broken beats and hypnotic melodic house downtempo, tribal rhythms and ambient soundscapes. The project crafts field recordings from Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, for a rich and immersive listening experience, balancing club instincts with introspective detail.

London-based label Studio Batsumi returns with its second release, Ya Hu Ra, a four-track EP. Blending analog warmth with organic textures, the record includes four raw cuts that moves from broken beats and hypnotic melodic house on the A-side to downtempo, tribal rhythms and ambient soundscapes on the B-side.

Written and recorded between London and Paris from 2020 to 2025 by Federico Bigonzetti and Maxime Obadia, the project also features Cameron Cullen and DJ Himitsu (Enharmonics) on Kirtan (A2). The EP blends field recordings from Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, crafting a sound that feels both intimate and vast.

The concept behind Ya Hu Ra was developed by label cofounder Marta Paccagnella, a study in sound archetypes where each track represents a different symbolic state: initiation, movement, trance, return. Whether on the dancefloor or in a living room, this release offers a rich and immersive listening experience, balancing club instincts with introspective detail.

It's pretty wild to think this is in fact Carli’s debut solo album, considering the Swedish producer’s long and illustrious career, defined by eclectic hits ranging from underground grime scorchers to straight-up Eurovision goodness, not to mention him being a cornerstone of acclaimed outfits like Off The Meds, Savage Skulls, and Marcus Price & Carli.
On Sea Of Love, the Stockholm-born former breakdancer takes listeners on a journey through a vast ocean of musical influences, effortlessly blending rave nostalgia, bass-heavy experimentation, and contemporary club sounds. Carli skilfully navigates from raw UK hardcore bonkerisms to the crisp rhythmic pulses of modern-day dancehall, always upholding a vibe that's at once futuristic and reverent of club music’s storied past.
Filled with intricate production techniques and an irresistible sense of joy, Sea Of Love showcases Carli’s unique ability to merge styles without losing coherence or authenticity. This is club music crafted by someone who’s not only seen it all from the booth, but also been on the dancefloor himself, resulting in tracks that feel deeply personal yet universally appealing.
With Sea Of Love, Carli firmly establishes himself as a visionary solo artist, proving that after decades of shaping the sound of Stockholm’s underground, his best is still ahead.

RuMac

The Bloody Box

ULLAPOOL, Scotland – RuMac (Ruairidh Maclean), the “weird guy” making “weird music” who insists his fans “have fun or feck off”, is proud to announce the release of his debut album 'The Bloody Box'. This uproarious new record showcases RuMac’s one-of-a-kind comedy persona and high-octane folk-punk sound, blending music and humor in a way that has already made his live shows legendary. Fresh off a viral TV performance that even left Simon Cowell declaring “I’ve never heard anything like this… it was fantastically mad”, RuMac is unleashing that same anarchic energy on 'The Bloody Box' for listeners everywhere.

On 'The Bloody Box', RuMac’s comedy and musical mayhem go hand-in-hand. Fans can expect “twisted folk-punk versions of classic hits” delivered with tongue-in-cheek flair. RuMac turns well-known anthems upside-down – from an accordion-driven take on AC/DC’s 'Thunderstruck' to a raucous cover of Dr. Hook’s satirical gem 'Everybody’s Makin’ It Big But Me' – each track packed with sonic surprises and punchlines. Known for his “off-kilter, abrasive and energetic” performances, RuMac brings that same wild stage spirit into the studio. He wields his accordion as both instrument and comedic prop, “armed only with his accordion and ancient Highland fury” as he mashes up bagpipe sounds, punk rock attitude, and cheeky theatrics. The result is a listening experience that’s equal parts concert, comedy show, and ceilidh gone awry.

Even the album’s title reflects RuMac’s devilishly witty style. 'The Bloody Box' is a nod to RuMac’s own tongue-in-cheek mythology: “The devil doesn’t play the fiddle… the devil plays the bloody box,” he likes to joke. It’s a playful twist on an old saying, asserting that the accordion – affectionately known as “the box” – is the true instrument of chaos. That mischievous theme runs throughout the album. From start to finish, 'The Bloody Box' embraces RuMac’s love of the absurd. Thunderous drum beats and even banjo riffs burst forth from his electrified accordion (according to RuMac’s infamous “origin story,” he once rigged his accordion with a mysterious device to unleash “sounds from hell” in a conservative music academy). The album captures that fictional mayhem in musical form, inviting listeners to laugh, mosh, and maybe raise a glass to the devil’s own jester of the Highlands.

Holy Wave

Studio 22 Singles And B-sides

In the winter of 2022, Holy Wave had a week off after a short tour that ended with a show in Los Angeles. The band found particular glee in playing those shows at that time, as they weren't sure they'd ever be doing that again just a few months prior—this batch of songs results from hanging out with some very good friends at Studio 22.

"The band have fashioned themselves into mainstays in the world of gauzy psychedelia, infusing dream pop soundscapes with colourful instrumentation, lush melodies, and weighty pathos." - Under the Radar Magazine.

"…narcotic neo-psych with synthed-out bedroom-pop undertones." - Shindig Magazine. "…lush-yet-tempered instrumentation that's undeniably pleasant, if not downright attractive." - Flood Magazine.

"The sound of Austin's Holy Wave has been getting progressively dreamier with each successive release, their music lush and immaculately arranged." - Post-Trash.

"Wonderful aural tones, meandering genteelly." - Narc Magazine.

Studio Electrophonique : The Sheffield Space Age, From The Human League To Pulp

The amazing story of the home studio that helped launch some of Britain’s most beloved bands. The Sheffield space age began in 1961, when local mechanic Ken Patten won a tape-recording competition by recreating the sound of a rocket launch using a pencil and a bicycle pump. In the decades that followed, the makeshift home studio he constructed became the launch pad for a group of young musicians who would shape the futuristic sound of 1980s pop.

The Human League, Heaven 17, Pulp, ABC and others made their early recordings with Ken, whose DIY ethic was the perfect fit for a city facing industrial decline but teeming with ideas. Studio Electrophonique tells the story of a generation seeking new frontiers in music, using everything they could lay their hands on – from science fiction novels to glam rock, Dada art and cheap electronics – to get there. Drawing on original interviews with Jarvis Cocker, Martyn Ware, Mark White and others, it brings to light a world of humour, charm, creativity and unfounded yet undaunted self-belief.

Studio

West Coast - 2025 Reissue

Some called Studio, the project of Swedish musicians Dan Lissvik and Rasmus Hägg, “the missing link between The Cure and Lindstrøm,” Pitchfork heard Durutti Column and Can, as the duo’s story became swept up in a loosely developing scene — adjacent first to the label Service (Jens Lekman, The Whitest Boy Alive) and later Sincerely Yours (The Tough Alliance, jj) — and a precursor to the 2010s boom at the axis of electronic and psychedelic music guided by indie greats like Caribou, Four Tet, and Darkside.

'West Coast', their seminal 2006 debut, captured a faraway romanticism of Balearic brushed up against Krautrock, disco, dub, and afrobeat, with pop lyricism lifted from new wave, all made modern by two art school grads in Gothenburg. First pressed in a small vinyl-only run via their own Information label, the album has been notably absent from most streaming services, and the internet’s record of its initial impact is all but fossilized from a bygone blog era, while its sound is simply untraceable to any one moment in music.

Outside of three 7” releases, they’d keep the music to themselves for several more years. In 2005, Hägg remembers, “We got our degrees and were kicked out of our studio spaces so all these recordings were just piled up. A year later we dusted them off and started to deconstruct and assemble them in a more drawn-out fashion.” In the same breadth, they cite DJ Screw, J Dilla, and Joy Division, along with early ‘80s European live DJ sets from the likes of Beppe Loda, Dj Mozart, and Baldelli as reference points. “The anything-goes mentality was very encouraging and was a big cornerstone to the Studio sound,” says Hägg. “But there’s so much more to the picture, we were not that young then and had lots of musical baggage in our suitcases, the new thing was that we finally let it all come through, not bound by any borders that was often the case with music identity in Sweden during the 90s.”

In the afterglow of the record’s 2007 reception, Studio receded from view, clouded behind a mountain of remix requests (including one for Kylie Minogue that saw release) and label bureaucracy. “It’s easy to wish we would have done some proper recordings of our own instead,” Hägg reflects. But both artists, now well into respective careers beyond Studio, have come to peace with West Coast as their most enduring effort together. Lissvik adds, “It serves as a good reminder for me to keep to that decision and promise and to continue exploring and growing.

‘Studio Natives, Vol.1’ is filled with improvisation, the most natural form of Jazz. Jackson Mathod is a trumpet player with intangible skill for the instrument, having played alongside Stormzy for his Glastonbury set he’s making waves with his third album. Speaking on the track ‘Mandible’ Mathod expands on his development into creating the album, ‘I think in some of my previous recorded music I was more focused on creating well-crafted music with great melodies and harmony. Whereas here there's a bit more focus on playing as a group and being more explorative in improvisation. We also didn't have a melody for this track until a week before the recording! Sometimes it just takes a while to find that melody or it might just pop into your head one day.’

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Modern trumpet player, Guildhall jazz alumni and session musician for Stormzy and Jordan Rakaei, Jackson Mathod drops his third album. A bright, fragrant and free jazz affair that's sure to give Halsall a run for his money. Lovely stuff.

The Special AKA

In The Studio - 40th Anniversary Edition (Half-Speed Master)

This release has been liaised and approved by the band's founder and main songwriter Jerry Dammers.

Formed in Coventry in the mid-1970s, The Specials was the idea of musician Jerry Dammers, who brought together an eclectic array of individuals to fulfill his vision of a multi-racial band, fusing the energy of punk with the legendary but, at the time, often overlooked, sound of Jamaican ska. The band rose to prominence along with the 2Tone movement, which included two No. 1 singles, Too Much too Young and 1981's Ghost Town, which theme still resonates today before Terry Hall, Lynval Golding and Neville Staple left to form the Fun Boy Three and Roddy Byers left to tour with his band the Tearjerkers.

The remaining members, Dammers, Bradbury and Panter, recruited guitarist John Shipley from The Swinging Cats, ex-Bodysnatcher Rhoda Dakar and lead vocalist Stan Campbell, reverting the original band name of The Special AKA and set to work on a new album. Released in 1984, 'In the Studio' was a brave mix of bold and challenging music, with a strong political, social and moral conscience. The album made it into the Top 40, and while it might not have been a huge commercial success, it was, and still is, an astonishingly unique work: a haunting, claustrophobic mix of lounge, soul, reggae, jazz and Arabic rhythms, with uncompromising subject matter. It featured two classic singles: the joyous, yet serious rallying anthem for the then imprisoned South African ANC leader, 'Free Nelson Mandela', and 'What I Like Most About You Is Your Girlfriend'. As time has gone by, the status of 'In The Studio'has grown, and today it is rightly viewed as a genuine lost classic.

Like the previous two Specials 40th Anniversary vinyl editions, this has been newly remastered and cut at half-speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, London.

Soul Jazz Records Presents: STUDIO ONE POWER MIX!

Brand new collection of Studio One killer tunes, focussing on the late 70s, 80s and beyond.

Since the early 1960s Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd had established Studio One as the unparalleled leader in reggae music in the world. In the years that followed he established the careers of countless reggae legends – Bob Marley & The Wailers, Marcia Griffiths, The Skatalites, Horace Andy, Dennis Brown, Burning Spear and many more.

From its inception Studio One had been at the forefront of every major development in reggae music – ska, rocksteady, roots, DJ, dub and, starting in the second half of the 1970s, dancehall.

Having attained such great success, by the late 1970s Clement Dodd was free to enjoy Studio One’s now firmly established supremacy in reggae music. He released a series of stunning new albums at the end of the decade by Sugar Minott, Johnny Osbourne, Freddie McGregor, and others that rode the wave of dancehall and set the path of Studio One’s output for the following 25 years.

During this period, long-established artists such as Alton Ellis, Jackie Mittoo and others returned to the label, recording some of their most creatively satisfying albums with new music that both celebrated the classic sound of Studio One while continuing to experiment, push boundaries and look forward to the future.

This release celebrates this sometimes-overlooked golden era at Studio One in the 1970s,1980s and beyond.

Jimi Hendrix

Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision

On September 13, Experience Hendrix L.L.C., in partnership with Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, is releasing Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision, a deluxe box set offering 39 tracks (38 previously unreleased) that were recorded by the new-look Jimi Hendrix Experience (Billy Cox on bass, Mitch Mitchell on drums) at Electric Lady Studios between June and August of 1970, just before the legendary musician’s untimely death the following month.

In celebration of the forthcoming release, on August 8, the City of New York will be temporarily renaming the portion of West 8th Street between 6th Street and MacDougal Street JIMI HENDRIX WAY. This is the block on which Electric Lady Studios was built and still stands. There will also be a media screening event inside the studio that night.

The project also includes 20 newly created 5.1 surround sound mixes of the entire First Rays Of The New Rising Sun album plus three bonus tracks [“Valleys Of Neptune,” “Pali Gap,” and “Lover Man”]. The Blu-ray includes the critically acclaimed, full-length documentary Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision. The film chronicles the creation of the studio, rising from the rubble of a bankrupt Manhattan nightclub to becoming a state-of-the-art recording facility inspired by Hendrix’s desire for a permanent studio. Directed by John McDermott and produced by Janie Hendrix, George Scott and McDermott, the film features exclusive interviews with Steve Winwood (who joined Hendrix on the first night of recording at the new studio), Experience bassist Billy Cox and original Electric Lady staff members who helped Hendrix realize his dream. The documentary includes never-before-seen footage and photos as well as track breakdowns of Hendrix classics such as “Freedom,” Angel” and “Dolly Dagger” by recording engineer Eddie Kramer. The package includes an extensive booklet filled with unpublished photos, Hendrix’s handwritten song drafts, and comprehensive liner notes. The new release comes on the heels of another feature-length documentary that was created by the same team; Music, Money, Madness… Jimi Hendrix Live In Maui, which was nominated for a GRAMMY in the Best Music Film category in 2022.

Leading the project is a previously unreleased version of “Angel [Take 7].” This newly mixed, stripped down version includes the original performances recorded by Hendrix, Mitchell and Cox on July 23, 1970. It does not include any of the drums and additional percussion elements Mitchell opted to add to this master take after Jimi had died.

Contained on the five vinyl LPs or three CDs in the Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision box set are 39 tracks recorded by Jimi and his band—consisting of bassist Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell—at the studio within the last four months of the guitarist’s life. Hendrix was hard at work creating First Rays Of The New Rising Sun, the ambitious double album that would follow his 1968 masterwork Electric Ladyland. Inspired by the possibilities of the new studio, the Experience built classic fare such as “Night Bird Flying,” “Freedom,” and “Dolly Dagger” from the ground up. The set offers a comprehensive look at the work Hendrix undertook during that fruitful summer of 1970. The music ranges from four-track demo recordings of “Valleys Of Neptune” and “Heaven Has No Sorrow,” alternate arrangements of promising new songs such as “Come Down Hard On Me” and “Belly Button Window,” extraordinary, live in the studio takes of “Tune X/In From The Storm,” “Astro Man” and “The Long Medley,” a stirring, 26 minute spontaneous exploration of “Beginnings,” “Hey Baby (New Rising Sun),” “Keep On Groovin’” and “Freedom.” Additionally, the box set present many of the mixes the guitarist completed with engineer Eddie Kramer before leaving to begin a European tour on August 30 at the Isle Of Wight festival in England. Hendrix would never again return to Electric Lady Studios.

The newly mixed 5.1 audio tracks contained on the Blu-ray of Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision include all 17 tracks from the posthumously released First Rays of the New Rising Sun (1997, recorded 1968-70), as well as “Pali Gap” from Rainbow Bridge (1971, recorded 1970), “Lover Man” from The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set, (2000, recorded 1970) and “Valleys of Neptune” from Valleys of Neptune (2010, recorded 1969-70).
The documentary explains in depth that while Jimi Hendrix’s death robbed the public of so much potential music, the continued success of his recording studio provides a lasting legacy beyond his own music. John Lennon, The Clash, AC/DC, Chic, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder and hundreds more made records at Electric Lady Studios, which speaks to one of Jimi’s lasting achievements in an industry that has radically changed over the course of the last half century.

“My brother had a musical vision,” Janie Hendrix reflects. “With this project, it felt appropriate to shed light not only on his own music, but also on his lasting contribution of Electric Lady Studios. He was driven internally to build a home base where he could record everything he felt. While his life was cut short, so many other talented artists continue to express themselves within those magical walls on 52 West 8th Street.”

In August of 2023, while on tour in Europe, Elder was invited to record a live session at the legendary BBC Maida Vale Studios for the Radio 1 Rock Show with Dan Carter. The resulting session is a snapshot of the band's powerful live performance and setlist from that tour.

The session was recorded in a single afternoon in a few takes under the guidance of longstanding BBC engineers Guy Worth and Clive Painter, and mastered and cut for vinyl by Carl Saff.

Soul Jazz Records Presents 'Studio One Soul 2' - 2024 Reissue

New 18th anniversary edition of the long out of print ‘Studio One Soul 2’, the long-awaited second volume of one of the largest selling Soul Jazz Records Studio One collections.

‘Studio One Soul 2’ takes us deep into Jamaica’s long-standing fascination with American soul and funk music.

Featuring a host of seminal Reggae artists who all first established their careers at Studio One before finding worldwide success. Featured artists include Horace Andy, The Heptones, Cornell Campbell, Ken Boothe, Jackie Mittoo, Jacob Miller and many more Studio One legends interpreting both classic and little-known American soul and funk tunes by the likes of Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, The Five Stairsteps, Marvin Gaye, The Stylistics, Lee Dorsey, Al Green, Syl Johnson and more.

Curtis Mayfield is without a doubt the main soul influence for many reggae groups in the 1960s and 1970s. Cornell Campbell’s ‘Ten to One’ is a stunning recut of the original Studio One single by The Mad Lads, who first covered this Curtis-penned hit for the Impressions. Another great Curtis Mayfield production, The Five Stairsteps and Cubie’s ‘Don’t Change’ is interpreted by Studio One soul man Winston Francis. Similarly, Devon Russell’s superb ‘Make Me Believe in You’ is, if anything, superior to Curtis Mayfield’s ground-breaking original.

While American soul and funk remain a constant source of inspiration on this album, classic DJs such as Prince Jazzbo and Little Joe also used these rhythms to ride vocal toasts over to serious effect.

This selection features a mixture of classics, rare and unreleased tracks from Studio One, all lovingly digitally re-mastered for this release.

Cloud Canyons / Studio Kosmische

Under Neon Stars

Feral Child’s 50th release is an absolute gem; housed in a beautiful 70s styled disco bag- it sees a 12” collaboration between longterm label favourites, Studio Kosmische from the UK and Cloud Canyons from Italy.

A killer double A side featuring a reworking by SK of “Under Neon Stars” (from Cloud Canyons’ great 2023 debut album “Dreaming Of Horses Running In Circles”) which adds to the original versions’ relentless motorik pulse, by adding a few parts and alchemically blending the original elements of the song; the slowbuilding ethereal female vocals, the multilayers of monophonic analogue synths- moulding a shrouding and lilting veil on the 9 minute long original.

Side B features a brand new track, “Black Fruit”, which also sprung from the creative dialogue between the two bands and also clocks in at around 9 minutes, side-long. Born as an instrumental piece by Studio Kosmische, “Black Fruit” developed into a full song thanks to the vocal additions by Michelle Cristofori, Laura Storchi and Stella Baraldi (Cloud Canyons’ singers) and a rich yet minimalistic array of instrumental parts by Studio Kosmische’s Dom Keen, who ingeniously shaped the keys harmonies and rhythmic textures around the vocal lines.

Accomplished by some subtle electronic treatment by Cloud Canyons’ Nicola Caleffi, “Black Fruit” ideally complements “Under Neon Stars” as a two-sided creature, hanging somewhere between krautrock and electronica.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Lysergic, cosmic wooze from the brilliant Studio Kosmische (Dom Keen) & Cloud Canyons. Both sides are longform pieces that are rich in the cosmic tradition but employ various levels of momentum. While 'Under Neon Stars' glows with psychedelic imagery and motorik prog atmospheres, 'Black Fruit' effortlessly brings in a beautiful haunted female vocal for a sparkling disco-adjacent swing. Another banging outing for the ever-reliable Feral Child.

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong

Ella & Louis - Complete Small Group Studio Recordings

Although both Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong had met and performed together previously, they wouldn't be heard on record together until January 18, 1946, when they waxed a single 78-rpm disc ("You Won't Be Satisfied) for Decca. They went on to record a few more singles together until in 1956 when producer Norman Granz paired the two together between 1956 and 1957 on three albums that were both critically acclaimed and commercial successes - appealing to audiences in and beyond the confines of jazz per se: Ella & Louis, its sequel Ella & Louis Again, and the selection of songs from George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess.

While Porgy & Bess was recorded with a big band, the first two albums (featured in this release) were made in small group formats with the great Oscar Peterson Trio plus drummers Buddy Rich or Louie Bellson, resulting in some of the most fascinating jazz and popular music ever produced.

Soul Jazz Records Presents: Studio One DJ's - 2024 Repress

For this Studio One release we return to the roots of Reggae music-The Soundsystem. Throughout the late 1950s and 1960s Soundsystems played throughout the city of Kingston, Jamaica. As well as Sir Coxsone's Downbeat Soundsystem other famous Soundsystem operators included Duke Reid (the Trojan), Prince Buster, Tom the Great and King Edwards.

These Soundystems were the birthplace of much of Jamaica's musical culture Soundclashes, Dancehall and the idea of the Toaster who sang over records- theDJ. As ever Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd led the field and so for this release the focus is on DJ's at Studio One and features legendary toasters such as Denis Alcapone, Dillinger and Prince Far I as well as a host of rare material by lesser known artists. Also included is Count Machuki the original DJ- the first man ever to speak over the mic-at Sir Coxsone¹s Downbeat Sound System- from where it all began.

As Steve Barrow (author of The Rough Guide to Reggae/Blood and Fire Records) writes in the sleevenotes, Jamaican deejay music is the source for all Rap music: From Count Machuki talking over records on Sir Coxsone's legendary Downbeat Sound System this style would eventually travel to America when the Jamaican-born Kool Herc began playing at Block parties (a version of the Kingston Soundsystem parties) in the Bronx. Cutting up rare-groove classics for the first B-Boys to rap over, Hip-Hop was born and theDJ music that had started on the early Soundsystems of Kingston would go on to conquer the world!

Studio One Records is the original Jamaican record label. Studio One Records started the career of hundreds of Jamaican artists from Bob Marley to The Skatalites, from Horace Andy to The Heptones. Studio One DJs (compiled by Mark Ainley) is the next in the series of releases where Soul Jazz Records are showcasing the music of Studio One, the label that literally defines Reggae.

The Who

Live At Shea Stadium 1982

The Who’s 1982 tour, which was all in North America apart from two warm-up dates at the Birmingham NEC in England, was their last to feature Kenney Jones on drums and they wouldn’t tour again until 1989. The tour promoted the recent “It’s Hard” album, which had been released in June 1982, and the set list included a number of tracks from that album, some of which the band would only play live on this tour. This release features the show from the second of their two nights at New York’s Shea Stadium and was recorded on October 13th 1982. Loco Live At Hope Mills Studios

A Certain Ratio present their recording of the ‘Loco Live at Hope Mill Studios’ session, originally a live stream of the band’s sensational 2020 album ‘ACR Loco’.

After a 12-year hiatus releasing albums, ‘ACR Loco’ was created by a confident and revitalised ACR. The band had jumped back into the studio after their most successful tour in over 20 years to record ‘ACR Loco’, and in the lead up to the release, they filmed and recorded this live session at the heart of the Manchester music scene - Hope Mill Studios. The session featured Maria Uzor of Sink Ya Teeth on vocals and the recorded vocals of the much-missed Denise Johnson.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to ‘ACR:Loco’, a forward-looking genre-defying slice of musical majesty.” - Narc

“On their first new album in over a decade, Manchester’s funkiest post-punk band offer an imperfect distillation of their 40-year legacy, updating their classic sound with nods to contemporary beat-driven music and political strife.” - Pop Matters

Soul Jazz Records Presents - Jackie Mittoo - The Keyboard King At Studio One - 2023 Reissue

Soul Jazz Records’ seminal double LP release, Jackie Mittoo - The Keyboard King at Studio On’, now available on black vinyl.

From forming The Skatalites at age 15, alongside Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook and others, to his work as writer, arranger, producer at Studio One records during the Sixties, writing and playing for artists such as Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths and The Heptones (to name a few), to his career as a solo artist as well as leader of bands such as The Soul Brothers, Soul Vendors and The Sound Dimension, Jackie Mittoo is at the heart of reggae music. He was one of the instigators of Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae. In the Seventies, DJ music and Dancehall were based upon classic rhythms of the sixties, many using the instrumental tracks that Jackie Mittoo created at Studio One at this time.

This compilation features the work of Jackie Mittoo at Studio One. It features music recorded as a solo artist (as opposed to the numerous singers that he accompanied). Most of these are taken from his recordings in the mid- Sixties where he was recording on an almost daily basis at Studio One’s Brentford Road studios, developing the funky reggae sound that was his trademark.

Jackie Mittoo is as much an icon of Reggae as he is to fans of Funk music. He is without doubt the funkiest keyboard player ever to come out of Jamaica.

With a foreword by Paul McCartney'It's semi-devotional -- a really special place' Florence Welch'There are certain things that are mythical. Abbey Road is mythical' Nile RodgersMany people will recognise the famous zebra crossing. Some visitors may have graffitied their name on its hallowed outer walls.

Others might even have managed to penetrate the iron gates. But what draws in these thousands of fans here, year after year? What is it that really happens behind the doors of the most celebrated recording studio in the world? It may have begun life as an affluent suburban house, but it soon became a creative hub renowned around the world as a place where great music, ground-breaking sounds and unforgettable tunes were forged - nothing less than a witness to, and a key participant in, the history of popular music itself. What has been going on there for over ninety years has called for skills that are musical, creative, technical, mechanical, interpersonal, logistical, managerial, chemical and, romantics might be tempted add, close to magic.

Soul Jazz Records Presents Studio One Funk - 2023 Reissue

18 years on from its original release, ‘Studio One Funk’ remains one of Soul Jazz Records’ most in demand Studio One titles.

‘Studio One Funk’ is made up of rare and unreleased reggae funk from the vaults of Studio One. Ever since the birth of funk in America, the sound has been an ever-present ingredient in the melting pot of Studio One’s musical output.

The music on this release is a combination of originals, US covers and versions of existing Studio One cuts. Jackie Mittoo shows his appreciation for Booker T and The MGs, the studio group at Memphis’ famous Stax Records, with ‘Hang ‘Em High’, itself a cover of a film soundtrack by Dominic Frontiere. Incredibly this version has never before been released. Booker T’s super funky ‘Melting Pot’ is also covered by the little-known Underground Vegetables.

Other versions include Isaac Hayes’ classic Blaxploitation soundtrack ‘Shaft’, again by Cedric Im Brooks, another unreleased gem, straight from the tape master. Motown gets a look in with Alton’s stripped-down version of the Spinners classic, ‘It’s A Shame’, written by Stevie Wonder and Syreeta.

James Brown is apparent in spirit with the JBs-inspired groove on the super rare cut, ‘Now’, by Lee Arab. Lloyd Williams similarly does a fine Kingston-style version of the hardest-working man in showbusiness on ‘Reggae Feet’.

Version-wise, we have ‘Idleberg’, Cedric Im Brooks’ tough instrumental cut on Horace Andy’s seminal ‘Skylarking’. The little-known Prince Moonie gives us a rare DJ cut of another Horace Andy classic, ‘See A Man’s Face’.

Pablove Black’s cut of Sidewalk Doctor (aka Poco Tempo) is one of a handful of Studio One releases featuring Augustus Pablo’s trademark instrument, the melodica, played by Black himself.

Add to these original cuts from Studio One’s heavyweight session players, including Leroy Sibbles, Jackie Mittoo, Leroy Sibbles, Eric Frater, Leroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace, Richard Ace, Vin Gordon and more, and you have one of the finest selections of reggae and funk you will ever hear.

“An absolute treasure trove for the collector as well as being great for the ears and feet. Jackie Mittoo's 'Hang Em High' is worth the price of the album on its own.” - Echoes

“A superb collection that shows how much many Jamaican musicians were influenced by the heavy funk belting out of American studios from the early seventies onwards.” - Touch

“The most satisfying listening experience so far in the Studio One series.” - The Wire

Soul Jazz Records Presents Studio One Music Lab

This new Studio collection on Soul Jazz Records delves deep into a melting pot world of reggae and funk and dub created at the music laboratory of 13 Brentford Road, Kingston in the 1970s - an intense collaboration of crack musicians, singers, DJs and engineers under the guidance of producer Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd.

Here you will find some of the deepest and rawest cuts to emanate out the Studio One factory - truly hypnotic rhythms, powerful funk guitar and bass, soaring horns and more interspersed with occasional vocals and toasting as musicians reach for the highest heights and deepest roots of reggae music.

Some of these tunes here are rare and classic versions to seminal Studio One vocal cuts from the likes of Horace Andy and Hortense Ellis. There is also a wealth of cuts from simply the greatest musicians ever to come out of Jamaica (let alone Studio One). These include Jackie Mittoo, Roland Alphonso, Cedric Brooks, Ernest Ranglin and the Brentford All-Stars. You’ll find straight up funk bombs such as Lennie Hibbert’s mindblowing ‘Go For Yourself’ (sounding like The Meters meets James Brown), the Brentford All-Stars covering War’s classic ‘The World is a Ghetto’, and Jackie Mittoo showing how to make Cream’s ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ into a reggae funk bomb.

All of these sit beside super-deep roots and dub cuts that exemplify together how Studio One was unique in Clement Dodd’s pioneering vision of reggae, the music created functioning with a continuous level of experimentation that blurred the lines between genres and pushed the outer limits of reggae music at all times. This album is deep.

The album comes with extensive sleeve notes by Steve Barker

Soul Jazz Records Presents - Fire Over Babylon: Dread, Peace And Conscious Sounds At Studio One

Soul Jazz Records’ new Studio One collection ‘Fire Over Babylon: Dread, Peace and Conscious Sounds at Studio One’ features a stellar selection of 70s roots music - classic and rare tracks recorded at Clement Dodd’s musical empire at 13 Brentford Road in the 1970s.

Rastafarian-inspired Roots music was an ever-important aspect of Studio One’s output from the start of the 1970s onwards and this album features many of the groundbreaking groups and artists that established the sound of Jamaica during this decade and beyond.

Featured here are seminal artists such as Freddie McGregor, The Wailing Souls, The Gladiators, Horace Andy, Devon Russell, Cedric Brooks, Count Ossie and Judah Eskender Tafari alongside a host of lesser-known rare cuts made at Studio One from artists such as The Prospectors, Viceroys and Pablove Black.

Studio One and founder Clement Dodd’s connection with Rastafarianism dates back to the early 1960s, with Dodd accompanying members of the Skatalites up to the hills of Kingston to listen to the music of the Rastafarian Count Ossie and his drummers. The album sleevenotes discuss how Clement Dodd’s musical links, as well as his role in heading the most important record label in Reggae, are in many ways linked to the beliefs of Rastafarianism.

November sees the release of MERRIE LAND, the second album from The Good, The Bad & The Queen, a band comprising of Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon, Tony Allen and Simon Tong. The Good, The Bad & The Queen began life as the acclaimed 2007 album of the same name, a heartfelt tribute to London described by The Observer in a 5 star review as –“One of the most surprising and magical records for which Damon Albarn has ever been responsible”.

The record traced a journey from the English music hall tradition to West Africa and Afrobeat, zigzagging through the West Indies and its reggae and dub, back to England and London's punk scene, all the while taking in a strand of British beat music from the '50s right through to Britpop. The result was a record specific to a place and mood but with a background that was geographically wide-ranging.

Now the four musical storytellers are back with a new studio album titled ‘Merrie Land’.

Produced by Tony Visconti and The Good, The Bad & The Queen was completed in London and Wales this year, during the current ongoing period in which the UK is preparing to leave the European Union, ‘Merrie Land ’is a questioning good-bye letter, a series of observations and reflections on Britishness in 2018. Even though it has been over 10 years since the band last released a record, the timing could not be more apt – there could not be a more perfect band to untangle the optimism, disorientation and confusion in the atmosphere today.

With ‘Merrie Land’, the band taps into a creative symbiosis of past and future, drawing inspiration from their shared glittering musical histories and wrapping the hybrid results in a brilliantly postmodern yet thoroughly British package.

The album sees the band’s focus move beyond London with a beautiful and hopeful paean to the Britain of today - an inclusive Britain - and the possibilities of the future. In the band’s own words, Merrie Land is a ten song lament of Anglo-Saxosentialism marking the reluctant end of a relationship, and about picking up the pieces and seeing what can be salvaged. The band set a beautifully muted palette and lustrous finish to bring out a mood that is bruised yet unapologetically defiant and optimistic, and carries the underlying message: we will survive.

In times of metaphysical trauma, the people need to forge ahead and wear armour. Here it is, set to the mood music of a nation about to be broken yet undefeated.

The Darkside

The Complete Studio Masters 5 CD Box Set

Legendary indie space rockers Sterling Roswell and Pete Bassman of Spacemen 3 return as The Darkside after a 23 year hiatus with a 5CD 'Complete Studio Masters' box set of remasters, remixes and demos. One of the projects to emerge from the groundbreaking efforts of the drone-rock pioneers, The Darkside led by Pete Bain (a.k.a. Pete Bassman), who on leaving Spacemen 3 prior returned to his hometown of Rugby, would be joined by fellow alumni and multi instrumentalist Sterling Roswell. Signed soon after to Beggars Banquet due to the strength of their demo’s and live shows, The Darkside went on to unleash psychedelic gems including; “Waiting For The Angels”, “Guitar Voodoo”, “Mystic Morning”, “All That Noise” and many more.

Now, nearly 25 years on, Rosco and Pete have worked front line for both the re-mastering and artwork of this special release. Rosco aka Sterling Roswell explains: “Contained are just some of the seeds that Pete and I planted in the spring time of our youth that are now bearing fruit with the help everyone at Beggars Banquet and Cargo Records, thanks and praises... This 5 CD box set contains the complete studio masters, 55 tracks recorded between the years 1989 and 1993 and contains 4 hidden bonus unreleased tracks recorded Live on Campus Radio at Surrey University celebrating the work we did together and continue to do so...”. Jonathan Levitt of Blurt Magazine, discusses the bands first release “All That Noise”: “I can clearly remember back to 1990 when All That Noise was released and the first time I spun it on my Doctor Goth radio show.

While simultaneously listening to the sinister opening bass notes of “Guitar Voodoo” and staring at the cryptic album cover I was transfixed by a band that was thankfully outside of any contrived musical movement being pushed at the time, Madchester anyone? The album is propelled along a very clear trajectory giving a heavy nod to 60’s psych along the way. Now some 27 years on, the album remains as it did upon my first listen, a psychedelic gem existing in its own space and time, filled with a sinister, brooding and beguiling set of tracks that continue to astonish.” Track Info : Discs 1 and 2 contain the critically acclaimed debut album ‘All That Noise’ remastered plus alternate versions, mixes, instrumentals, demos, bonus unreleased live tracks and an interview recorded in 1990. Disc 3 contains the follow up to second critically acclaimed album Mellomania, remastered in full. Disc 4 contains dub remixes and remastered Mayhem To Meditate EP. Disc 5 contains the Bomp Records Lunar Surf EP, remastered Jukebox At Munster’s single, the previously unreleased lost 3rd album and demos.

‘Black Man’s Pride’ is the striking new Studio One collection of deep righteous reggae, featuring Horace Andy, Alton Ellis, The Gladiators, Sugar Minott, The Heptones, Freddie McGregor, Cedric Brooks & more.

While the righteousness of blackness is at the heart of the Rastafarian faith, this collection illustrates how black pride remained a central theme, if not the defining essence, at the very core of all the music created at Studio One Records under the direction of Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd.

In order to understand the centrality of black identity in the music created at Studio One, we need look no further than Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd who created the first black-owned record company in Jamaica.

In similar fashion Alton Ellis’s defining ‘Black Man’s Pride’ brings up emotions that are at the heart of many of these uplifting songs. Alton Ellis’ birthplace was the Trench Town ghetto of Kingston, also the birthplace of The Wailers, Ken Boothe and many other Studio One luminaries.

Clement Dodd established a musical empire firmly rooted by the core musicians working at Studio One, many of whom came out of the Alpha School for Wayward Boys, essentially an orphanage run by Roman Catholic nuns, whose luminaries include Don Drummond, Johnny Moore, Leroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace, Cedric Brooks, Vin Gordon, Tommy McCook & more.

Many of the songs featured here come from the transitory phase in reggae at the start of the 1970s, after the exhilaration of Ska and following the cooling down of Rocksteady.

While reggae awaited the arrival of roots, Studio One’s vocalists were already producing some of the moodiest music imaginable.

Here are 18 heavyweight tunes, both classic cuts and super-rare tunes.

Featured here is a new collection spanning Studio One’s dancehall period - singers and deejays on classic Studio One rhythms, studio and electronic wizardry from the Brentford Road headquarters, lots of rare 12” singles, all effortlessly brought together to nice up the dance.

When Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd first ruled the dancehalls of Kingston in the 1950s, fighting off the soundsystem competition of Duke Reid, King Edwards and others, few could imagine how far the reign of Studio One would last. However, the emergence of dancehall as a distinct style of reggae at the end of the 1970s, as upstart competing producers began recording vocalists and deejays performing over replayed classic Studio One rhythms, in many ways made the influence of Clement Dodd’s vision more omnipotent than ever before (and lasting to this day).

Not surprisingly, Clement Dodd’s creativity and business acumen made him quick to respond to this musical phenomenon - he soon began voicing the new stable of Studio One singers and deejays, such as Sugar Minott and Lone Ranger, over original classic Studio One rhythms recorded in the late 1960s - by producing some of the most innovative, time-bending and creative music of his career.

This album comes as CD with slipcase, super-loud, super-heavy triple vinyl with free download code.

Joy Division

In The Studio With Martin Hannett

One of the most important Joy Division discoveries ever - with the approval of Martin Hannett's family - Martin Hannett's own mix tapes of the 1978 and 1979 Cargo Studios, Rochdale sessions plus Hannett's other mixes of songs and sound effects probably from Strawberry and Britannia Row. Martin Hannett had a habit of running quarter inch tape machines throughout all Joy Division recording sessions and had an agreement with the band and Rob Gretton and Tony Wilson to create his own versions of the recording sessions and would often go into the various studios without the band and continually remix what he had recorded on those tapes and experiment feeding what he had recorded through his AMS delays and play around with synthesisers. It is Martin's use of these weird and wonderful sound effects and synth sounds on Joy Division recordings that made Joy Division studio recordings stand out above any other punk or post punk band from that time and this CD gives an insight into the sounds Martin Hannett had in his head and what he fed into the Joy Division sound. Tracks included many with multiple versions are: "Digital", "Glass", "Atmosphere", "Dead Souls", "Ice Age", "N4" ("Decades") and "Eternal". Also features interviews and many of the original sound samples.
