STARLIGHT

New Metroplex! Featuring Basic Channel demigod Moritz Von Oswald on remix duties.

"Starlight" is an adequate title for this swung piece of Detroit minimalism / futurism. Using slowly evolving synth parameters, a reverb-laden hi-hat rhythm and supporting bass weight, the track rocks on a dub-echoed pendulum; cavernous, pitch black, and gazing into the endless wonder of the galaxy.

Grounding the track into more submerged terra firma, Moritz accentuates the swung rhythms, minimizing the space and making the track hit more directly - especially around the low mids. It's an expert refix which retains all the qualities of the original whilst giving it a whole new sonic environment.

Specialist tackle from two stalwarts of the game - these are gonna fly out so buy now or cry later!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Hotly anticipcated new music from techno overlords Juan Atkins and Moritz. It doesn't disappoint!

South African production duo of Emil Zoghby and John Galanakis were responsible for a string of high-quality disco singles in the early 80s, typically cover versions of international hits - Klein & MBO’s ‘The Big Apple’, Sly & the Family Stone’s ‘Family Affair’ & David Joseph’s ‘You Can’t Hide (Your Love From Me)’ - backed with their own compositions. When Starlight hit the market with an album in 1983, it featured only one cover, the local hit ‘Picnic’, along with five of the duo’s original compositions, including their similarly styled response, ‘Picnicing’, which replaces the original’s sax with spaced-out synth stabs. Then there’s ‘Jah Jah Love’, an ecstatic disco sermon of dancefloor dynamite weighing in at over eight and a half minutes. Other tracks on this landmark album - ‘Let’s Go Dancing (Boogie Boogie)’, ‘Keep On Moving’ and an eponymous instrumental - offer a similar fusion of classic disco with newer Italo and proto-house influences: machine music with a human touch! Remastered from the original master tapes and reissued for the first time. Killer!

Although they haven’t been together long, The Starlight Magic Hour have attracted a great deal of attention for their genre-defying depictions of ne’er-do-well wastrels. And while their penchant for NSFW lyrics makes them fitting signees to London label ‘Permanent Creeps’, there is a perverse pleasure to be found in the Starlight Magic Hour’s music. Not least because the 7-piece certainly have an ear for a tune.

On their debut EP ‘The End of The Party’, The Starlight Magic Hour deliver strong choruses throughout which serves to anchor an EP that has little fidelity to a consistent sound. Even within songs, the band veers into unexpected territory with varying degrees of success; the pavement-lite of ‘Song to Jonny’ fits like a glove while the super-funky coda to ‘The Child of Rage (I want to feel love)’ is more like a borrowed identity. The main thrust of their music does however bring certain indie touchstones to mind. To give you some idea, imagine a more folksy Fat White Family or if Lou Reed was lead singer of The Fall.

"Invisible Starlight" is a ripping tune by an unknown midwestern funk outfit with a driving backbeat and soaring horns. It sounds like Ohio to us, but we can't be sure. What is certain however, is that these gents rocked the local bowling alleys, social clubs and loungespots wherever they went. Label bosses Universal Cave touch down on the A-side with their primo 45 edit, hitting us with a relentless groove of fat bass, bright horns and irrepressible rhythm guitar - so damned phonky y'all. Meanwhile on the flip, The Beat Broker rounds out the original with his signature style and an impeccable ear. The Kind Dub's sun drenched delay and reinforced drums ensure that Invisible Starlight will shine over any dancefloor!

    STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Here we have a hot 7" of the rawest, roughest disco funk, expertly retweeked for modern jocks. There's looped licks on the A-side from the UC crew, while Beat Broker gets dubby-in-the-disco over on the flip...
