The new album from Italian duo Dressel Amorosi, comprising Federico Amorosi and Valerio Lombardozzi, is a fervent homage to the realm of Italian soundtracks and library music from the late '70s and early '80s. Navigating effortlessly through a spectrum of scenarios and atmospheres, it conjures up vivid images of action-packed sequences, wistful retro vibes, chic party scenes, and hair-raising horror chills.

With a refined, contemporary flair, Spectrum celebrates early '80s cinema and its unmistakable aesthetics, steering clear of any trace of nostalgia. It weaves together elements of synth-pop, jazz-prog, electric fusion, and chill-funk across its seven compelling tracks, reimagining the past through a contemporary lens.

Compared to their previous, strictly horror-themed album, here Dressel Amorosi broaden their musical and cinematic palette, adding ingredients from the giallo, sexy thriller, comedy, and crime genres.

Their sonic exploration, too, strikes a delicate balance between the past and present. Federico Amorosi's basslines resonate with the distinctive timbre of a Rickenbacker 4003, its effects ranging from time-honored classics like the Mutron pedal to more modern marvels like the Darkglass, with a sprinkle of 'secret sauce' to ensure a signature sound. In addition, Valerio Lombardozzi's 'arsenal of machines' boasts iconic synthesizers such as the Roland Juno 106, the Korg MS 20, and the Farfisa Syntorchestra, which was a game-changer for an entire generation of Krautrock bands, including the early Tangerine Dream.

Merging an array of moods and hues into a mesmerizing chromatic tapestry, Spectrum summons the essence of late '70s and early '80s Italian cinema, reminding us of the astonishing diversity, enduring iconography, and sonic identity that defined that era. The album's packaging, artwork and graphic layout intentionally channel the spirit of a classic library music LP from that period, or rather its deluxe version. The 650g hardcover sleeve, designed by specialist Eric Adrien Lee, is complemented on the back by descriptions of the atmospheres of each track, which back in the day were meant to guide music consultants and TV programmers in their selections.

Pete Kember (Sonic Boom/Spacemen 3) and Simeon Coxe of legendary '60s electronic innovators Silver Apples came together to create this brilliant EP in 1998. It was released the following year on Space Age recordings. The numerous electronic instruments and oscillators used by Pete and Simeon invoke a timelessly purist electronic aesthetic, occasionally augmented by the presence of additional musicians Will Carruthers, Iain Worrall and Alf Hardy, who add bass, drums and yet more layers of electronics to the mix Now, to mark 25 years after its inception, this highly lauded and sought after recording is being repressed in 180g heavyweight silver vinyl.

      Richard Formby / Spectrum

Sweet Running Water / The Drunk Suite

A first time release for 2 untitled demos from Spectrum’s 1992 classic “Soul Kiss (Glide Divine)” LP.

Listed here as “untitled”, the pair of tunes here were penned by Richard Formby initially and were developed into the classics “Sweet Running Water” and “The Drunk Suite” for the LP which represented Sonic Boom’s first project as a band post Spacemen 3.

Lovely stripped down minimal pieces which represent a fascinating insight into how the tracks were first laid down and presented to Sonic and Mike Stout in the band.

Definitely one for all Spacemen (and post S3 bands) afficionados and released as a one time pressing of 500 45s dressed up nice in PY’s BBC ‘70s library ‘tip of the hat’ sleeves and additional backing card.

        Floating Spectrum

        A Point Between

Floating Spectrum is the moniker for Taiwan-born, Berlin-based composer and audio technologist, Mei-Fang Liau. Her debut album as Floating Spectrum, A Point Between - crafted from a combination of synthesizers, everyday household objects, and unique software synthesizers made by Liau herself - is truly a sound and vision unlike any other. To complete the album, Liau relied heavily on a self-made, fractal-inspired software synthesizer called Polyphylla, which simulates the way in which nature creates very complex and organic forms just by repeating slight variations of a simple form.

It allowed Liau to create slowly evolving textures and sounds with complex dynamics, and thus the driving influence for the whole of A Point Between. The lone outlier is "Eruption," for which Liau built a generative sound system that turns visual data into sound. In this hybrid system, sensitively fluctuating analog signals, fine-tuned data analysis, and human intuition perform together as one coherent living being. The technological marvels of Floating Spectrum are, of course, uniquely impressive. But the more astonishing and intangible triumph of A Point Between is its singular ability to collect and shape such abstract sonic organisms into richly textured, immersive works of art. It's that profound resonance that makes A Point Between such an uncanny work of emotional and structural depth
