Sketches Of Spain - 2024 Repress

Sketches of Spain was Miles Davis and Gil Evans' third conceptual album, the first being "Miles Ahead" in 1957, followed by their adaptation of George Gershwin's music for "Porgy and Bess"in 1958. On Sketches of Spain, Miles stated in his autobiography that the whole concept came out of listening to Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez".

Soul Jazz Records’ Gipsy Rhumba is the first album ever outside of Spain to focus on one of the most exciting musical culture clashes ever that first took place in the early 1960s.

Primarily known as the creators of Flamenco, Gypsies from the Catalan region of Spain came up with a fascinating hybrid style – Gipsy Rhumba – which blended together Latin and Rhumba music of Cuba and the Caribbean together with their own Flamenco, as well as the emerging Rock and Roll from America.

The extensive booklet contains definitive sleevenotes by the musicologist Jose Manuel Gómez, record designs and stunning photography from the celebrated photographer Jacques Leonard.

“A capsule of supercharged clapping and joyous vocals’” - The Guardian

“Must-have’ ‘You all know Gipsy Kings’ blend of flamenco and Latin rhythms … but where did this convergence of Latin music styles occur? This compilation demonstrates how mid-1960’s Barcelona hot-housed gypsy musicians who employed the rumba rhythm… Gipsy Rhumba unearths a forgotten corner of Europop” - The Sunday Times

“Musicologists aren’t the only ones who will enjoy pulling at the threads that bind this particular sound clash … Messing with the traditional form is daring at any time, but the result was something quite fantastic, potent and intriguing, full of marvellous grooves and compelling rhythms” - Irish Times

      The Chameleons

Elevated Living - Live In Manchester, London And Spain

        • Live extravaganza from post-punk “sonic cathedrals” (©The Independent), The Chameleons featuring live sets recorded in the ‘80s across two CDs and one DVD

        • Featuring two live shows at The Hacienda and Camden Palace that have never been previously released on CD and an earlier set at the Gallery Club

        • Plus a DVD featuring all three shows and an episode of Catalan TV programme Arsenal devoted to the band

Formed in Greater Manchester in 1981, The Chameleons pioneered post punk, combining Reg Smithies’ and Dave Fielding’s layered, shimmering guitars, drummer John Lever’s tribal rhythms and Mark Burgess’ driving bass and impassioned vocals with lyrics often reflecting the anxiety and alienation of the Thatcher era.

“All tribal percussion and jagged guitar shards straining to frame vast vistas with one hand while clutching their alienated urban roots with the other.” NME

The Chameleons are an acknowledged influence on future generations of indie and alternative rock bands including Stone Roses, Oasis, The Charlatans, Smashing Pumpkins, The Flaming Lips, The Killers, The Horrors, The National and Interpol.

‘Elevated Living’ includes their two celebrated hometown Manchester shows, ‘Live At The Gallery Club’ (1982) and ‘Live At The Hacienda’ (1983) and their superb show filmed for the ITV, ‘Live At The Camden Palace’ (1984) on both CD and DVD. The latter two shows are presented on CD for the first time.

The DVD also includes an episode of Catalan TV programme Arsenal devoted entirely to the band. Broadcast in January 1986, it mixes four tracks taken from a live show at the Discoteca 666 in Barcelona from 1985 (also on CD) plus studio performances and interviews with singer/bassist Mark Burgess and drummer John Lever.

The Gallery show includes rarities ‘Nathan’s Phase’ and ‘Things I Wished I’d Said’, while The Hacienda includes early versions of ‘A Person Isn’t Safe Anywhere These Days’ under the working title of ‘Men Of Steel’ and ‘Thursday’s Child’ as ‘Years Ago’.

        Spain

        The Soul Of Spain

"Of all the melancholy slowcore bands of the mid-'90s, Spain were one of the more imaginative: a debonair, blues-tinged group from LA led by Josh Haden (son of jazz bassist Charlie Haden) that frequently sounded like Spiritualized crossed with a cool jazz quartet. Haden's calm dissection of his own doubt and guilt is unnerving, like eavesdropping on an intimate conversation.... a woefully underappreciated band." UNCUT

Spain are a Los Angeles-based alternative rock band founded in 1993 by Josh Haden (son of jazz bass legend Charlie Haden). Their debut 1995 album, 'The Blue Moods Of Spain', garnered the band a devoted cult following, In 1999, they released their sophomore CD 'She Haunts My Dreams' and they followed this with 'I Believe' A Spain best of compilation, 'Spirituals: The Best Of Spain', was released in 2003. Haden reformed Spain in 2007 with all-new members and began playing gigs again in their native L.A. Since then they've shared the stage with Tindersticks and the Clientele.

Ten years of waiting for new Spain songs and it feels like almost nothing has changed. 'The Soul Of Spain' contains the same gorgeous, dreamy, lounge-tinged pop that made their first album The Blue Moods of Spain a critical and cult favorite. The songs feature Josh Haden's smoky vocals, the trademark moody arrangements and the very special Spain-vibe. But… "There are 2 songs on this new release are very up-tempo and even, God forbid, kinda Rock n Roll. A friend of mine told me not to mess up the Spain formula, to which I said "the songs may be faster, but they're still in the Spain idiom with song structure, they're Spain". (Josh Haden)
