After getting used to eclectic sounds but always rooted in disco music, boogie with some proto-house drift, at the stroke of a dozen reissues, Omaggio delights us with a two tracks new-wave masterpiece, released in the mid-'80s on Color Record, seminal Flemish label, first and only recording of the Sound On Sound project. The original tracks "Macho" and "Depression" have been fully restored and come courtesy of Peter Gillis. Mr. Gillis is a highly regarded artist, sound engineer, composer and producer who has worked for some of the most important Belgian studios as well as an absolute pioneer of the Euro House scene, and a signatory of some of the greatest hits in this genre.

Intensified Sounds: The Beverley's Rock Steady Singles 1967 - 1968 is the 4th part of the exclusive compilation series, which celebrates the best works from the legendary reggae label Trojan Records. It was compiled by Laurence Cane-Honeysett who also wrote the liner notes. Following on from this year’s critically acclaimed ‘The Collapse Of Everything’, Adrian Sherwood teams up with Speakers Corner Quartet and African Head Charge for new four-track EP ‘Barbican Heights’, a project which traverses the musical worlds of dub, jazz, electronic, Afrobeat and beyond.

Recorded during a singular day of creative spontaneity at Wicker Studios, the three acts, alongside Alex White of Primal Scream and Fat White Family, combined for semi-improvised reworkings of classic African Head Charge composition ‘Wicked Kingdom Of This Earth’ and Speakers Corner Quartet’s own ‘Topanga’, as well as two new tracks constructed from scratch during the session.

Produced by Adrian Sherwood, mastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery Studios and released as a 12” vinyl EP with printed outer sleeve and labels.

BILLY has been releasing records since 1979, HOLLY has been releasing records since 1990, in 1999 they got together for a collaborative effort which originally came out in the USA on Wabana records. 'IN BLOOD' is a great album, pretty much ignored in Europe the first time around, it’s subtitled ‘ONE CHORD! ONE SONG! ONE SOUND!’ But it’s so much more than that, tracks like ‘Demolition Girl’ & ‘Step Out’ roar out of your stereo, really great dirty one chord (with many notes) blues songs with vocal trading, clanging guitars and backed by the Medway Delta Review, which features, Bruce and Johnny of Thee Headcoats as well as Johnny Gibb of the Wildebeests. While simplicity, repetition and sheer rock & roll minimalism are at the heart of the album, 'In Blood' never ceases to hold interest. It's just plain addictive!

You don’t have to be a cinephile to know Michael Winner’s 1974 cult vigilante movie Death Wish. Starring the ever-stoic, quintessential action hero Charles Bronson, it was this film that defined the further careers of both Winner and Bronson. Right before this, they collaborated on The Stone Killer, in which Bronson plays a gritty detective from New York sent to L.A. to solve a case involving an old Sicilian Mafia family feud. The soundtrack is composed by jazz pianist and composer Roy Budd, who was also responsible for the much-praised soundtrack of the 1971 classic Get Carter starring Michael Caine.

It begins with a gentle tender melody but it’s a trick, as there is a 70-piece orchestra waiting to pounce. Suddenly the big picture is revealed, and the listener enters a full-on Budd theme with a cool jazz accompaniment. The score perfectly demonstrates Budd's ability to blend jazz with orchestral arrangements in ways unparalleled by very few composers. In typical 1970s fashion, this soundtrack will surely satisfy fans of the jazz-funk and library music found on labels such as KPM and Music De Wolfe.

This very special project tells the story of one man’s struggle and resilience, expressed through raw, heartfelt music- recorded and filmed within the walls of a California State penitentiary. Mr. Chuck Bynum, whose career once placed him alongside legends such as the late Marvin Gaye and Miss Natalie Cole, went on to record with the 1970s funk unit, T.U.M.E. (The Ultimate Music Experience). Just as he was poised to rise further, securing his own solo record deal, Chuck’s life took a dramatic turn when he was charged with a non-violent drug offense and handed a life sentence. While incarcerated, Chuck was noted as a model prisoner and found a way to keep creating, channelling his experience into music. Through the prison arts program, Chuck documented a rare piece of his transformational journey- turning pain into expression and music into celebration.

Now, for the first time ever, this unreleased work is being shared with the world- an authentic glimpse into the power of music as both hope and redemption.

After previewing new solo music with June’s four track EP The Grand Designer, Adrian Sherwood delivers a brand new full-length work, The Collapse Of Everything, his first solo album since 2012. A meticulously constructed album from the master producer and mixologist, Sherwood pushes his ever adventurous sound into new frontiers. Although underpinned by a natural dub sensibility, the music presented on The Collapse of Everything fluidly crosses genre borders and seamlessly fuses a wide range of influences from a lifetime of listening and producing.

Probably the best known Dub Syndicate album, this 1991 set was recorded between Jamaica and London, with the rock solid rhythms of band leader Style Scott augmented by a number of additional players, including guitar from Skip McDonald, vocals by Lee “Scratch” Perry and Akabu, samples of the late, great Prince Far I, and keyboards from Keith Levene

It also marks a period in which the label was embraced as much by acid house afficianados as hardcore dub heads, with this album becoming a staple of the post-rave ‘comedown’ session. A follow-up to the 'Ambience In Dub' set that anthologised the early Dub Syndicate albums, 'Out Here On The Perimeter 1989-1996' picks up the story in the late 1980s with Style Scott coming more to the forefront of the project as bandleader and co-producer, and the group emerging as a live entity, mirroring the trajectory of Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah of labelmates African Head Charge.

This was also the period of their greatest popularity, with a classic series of albums that combined the best of Jamaican musicianship and the wild studio experimentation of UK production maverick Adrian Sherwood, resulting in music that appealed to ravers and dreads alike. Sherwood has also concocted a special bonus album of brand new version excursions on rhythms from the period.

This box set includes four albums from that period, plus 'Obscured By Version' - an album of new productions based on classic Dub Syndicate Rhythms.

Vin Gordon, also known as Don Drummond Jr, is a celebrated trombonist from Jamaica who now drops a second 12" on Finnish Dub & Sound International with the Dubsetters. It carries on the good work of their first outing with rootsy and organic reggae rhythms topped with the signature smooth sounds of Gordon's melodies up top. After the original version of 'Get On The Groove', the B-side keeps things sweet with a Groove Dub that is as deep as they come and stacked with echo and reverb for that lovely authentic sound and then closing it out is 'Groove 78 Style' which is more percussive, splashy and cavernous with some deft studio effects added in.

American filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1963, is considered "the single most influential director of his generation," having won two Academy Awards, two BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globe Awards and one Palm d'Or. Among his most celebrated films are Pulp Fiction (1994), Jackie Brown (1997), both volumes of Kill Bill (2003-2004), Death Proof (2007), Inglourious Basterds (2009), Django Unchained (2012), The Hateful Eight(2015), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). A rare early album by Creation Rebel back in print for the first time since 1979. Rebel Vibrations was originally issued by the pre-On-U Sound label Hitrun. The rhythms stem from one of the first recording sessions organised by maverick producer Adrian Sherwood, taking advantage of ace Jamaican drummer Lincoln “Style” Scott, sticksman for the Roots Radics, visiting the UK for the first time.

A true dub classic from 1980 – backwards tapes drenched in interplanetary sound effects, ghostly voices from beyond the stars and ringing percussion – one of the most out-there attempts to push the limits of dub reggae beyond the final frontier ever recorded. Featuring members of the Roots Radics, Misty In Roots and Prince Far I’s Arabs.

Originally the sole release on pre-On-U Sound label 4D Rhythms, a young Adrian Sherwood remixed and re-recorded a tape of older reggae rhythms, overdubbing a ton of new percussion and FX, flipping the tape over, and generally abusing the reel-to-reel in any way possible. The result is something utterly deranged and unique in the already pretty out-there annals of dub. It was also rumoured to be the planned soundtrack of a Don Letts-directed film about ‘alien dreads from beyond the stars’!

With the vinyl now commanding high prices on the secondhand market (having not been pressed since 1982), On-U Sound is proud to present this extra special reissue, pressed on limited edition black vinyl, with a fold-out poster insert telling the fascinating story of this classic album in full, alongside rare photos. First time available on vinyl since 1982. Psychotic Jonkanoo was the sixth Creation Rebel album in three years, originally licensed to the post-punk oriented Glaswegian label Statik. Another solid set of killer dub, albeit less instrumentally inclined than their previous efforts and more focussed on militant-style conscious chants. Bandleader Crucial Tony was aided on the vocal front by harmonies from other group members, in a style reminiscent of Black Uhuru, plus the occasional guest such as John Lydon of the Sex Pistols and Public Image Limited providing backing harmony (!) on “Mother Don’t Cry”, and the legendary Deadly Headley Bennett adding saxophone to the opening track.

Exact reproduction of this excellent two-sider (double B-side) ‘The Only Sound’ / ‘New Musical Express’, the debut punk single by Dansette Damage from Birmingham, originally released on the tiny Shoestring Records in early 1978.

The tracks were produced incognito by Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin. “Robert put all needles in the red which is why it sounds so raw! Also, we couldn’t sing and you can hear Robert’s high falsetto at the top end, trying to keep us lot in tune!” said the band.

Original copies of this record sell for over £100, so here is a chance to see and hear what all the fuss is about.

The album features contributions from the likes of Martin Duffy (Primal Scream/Felt) and Ivan “Celloman” Hussey, fresh from his work on the massively acclaimed duo of Horace Andy albums, Midnight Rocker and Midnight Scorchers, both of which featured songwriting contributions from Jeb Loy.

Jeb Loy comments: "The United States Of The Broken Hearted has been forty years in the making. I’ve known Adrian, and considered him one of my closest friends, for that long. During that time we’ve spent more hours listening, and talking about, music than anything else. Reggae, Country, Folk, Jazz, Soul; it’s been the backdrop to our friendship. Adrian introduced me to some of my favourite music; Count Ossie, Culture, Harry Beckett, Mulatu Astatke. Through the years we’ve listened to Sun Ra, Lee Perry, Ornette Coleman, Johnny Cash, Woody Guthrie. A couple years ago, on a visit to Adrian, I mentioned Gram Parsons’s concept of ‘American Cosmic Music’, the melting mix of musical genres that constitutes a uniquely American sound. We talked about recording a record that incorporated all the influences I’d gathered, from Bluegrass to Jazz to Reggae to Soul. The United States Of The Broken Hearted is that record. We wanted to include Folk (Deportees), Country (Satisfied Mind), protest songs (I Hate The Capitalist System), and songs of my own that bore the marks of those that had gone before. I sang the songs and played guitar; Adrian brought in friends and fellow travellers to finish them. It’s all there, Soul, Jazz, Country, Folk; and underlying everything, Adrian’s Reggae infused production.”

Adrian Sherwood adds: “This is Jeb’s ‘Great American Songbook’, he’s become such a great singer and songwriter over the years. This is a beautiful piece of work reminiscent of our mutual love for the Miracle album I made with Bim Sherman. I’m really proud of this record and it’s a fitting follow-up to Long Time Traveller.”

Soul Jazz Records’ new Studio One collection ‘Fire Over Babylon: Dread, Peace and Conscious Sounds at Studio One’ features a stellar selection of 70s roots music - classic and rare tracks recorded at Clement Dodd’s musical empire at 13 Brentford Road in the 1970s.

Rastafarian-inspired Roots music was an ever-important aspect of Studio One’s output from the start of the 1970s onwards and this album features many of the groundbreaking groups and artists that established the sound of Jamaica during this decade and beyond.

Featured here are seminal artists such as Freddie McGregor, The Wailing Souls, The Gladiators, Horace Andy, Devon Russell, Cedric Brooks, Count Ossie and Judah Eskender Tafari alongside a host of lesser-known rare cuts made at Studio One from artists such as The Prospectors, Viceroys and Pablove Black.

Studio One and founder Clement Dodd’s connection with Rastafarianism dates back to the early 1960s, with Dodd accompanying members of the Skatalites up to the hills of Kingston to listen to the music of the Rastafarian Count Ossie and his drummers. The album sleevenotes discuss how Clement Dodd’s musical links, as well as his role in heading the most important record label in Reggae, are in many ways linked to the beliefs of Rastafarianism.

The landmark first album on the On-U Sound label, this self-titled debut announced a gathering of the tribes: producer Adrian Sherwood bringing together members of the Slits, the Pop Group, the Flying Lizards and the Raincoats and getting them to collaborate with the likes of the Roots Radics’ Style Scott, Creation Rebel’s Crucial Tony, and Aswad’s George Oban to form a potent post-punk/dub fusion.

The albums two highest peaks are brilliantly realised interpretations of Jamaican classics - Junior Byles’ “Fade Away” and Bim Sherman’s “Love Forever”, Ari Up’s vocal transporting the dread warning and lovers rock vibes to the icy hallways of early-80s London squatland. Elsewhere Mark Stewart marshalls an early version of his “Crazy Dreams and High Ideals” (later re-versioned with the Maffia), music journalist Vivien Goldman voices caustic album closer “Private Armies” (originally a b-side to her Launderette single), and all sorts of strange noises and rhythmic murk bridge the gaps, the instrumentals falling somewhere between a late night studio session at Channel One and the kinds of experimental soundscapes being explored at the time by Industrial Records.

The quickfire follow-up to the New Age Stepper’s self-titled debut, this set was also issued in 1981. A perhaps more melodic and accessible record than its predecessor, the bulk of the album is versions of tunes sourced from reggae imports of the period, featuring radical interpretations of songs by Bim Sherman, Horace Andy and B.B. Seaton.

Ari Up of the Slits takes more of a frontwoman role here, singing lead on most tracks, and bringing a lot of her own indomitable personality to bear on the material, even breaking briefly into German for her take on “Problems”! It also features the vocal debut of a very young Neneh Cherry on “My Love”. The rhythms are rock solid, laid down by the crack team of Eskimo Fox, Crucial Tony and George Oban, having honed their skills on sides by Creation Rebel and Aswad, with everything expertly dubbed through the mixing desk of Adrian Sherwood.

‘The Pounding System’: The debut Dub Syndicate set from 1982, pre-dating the involvement of mainstay Style Scott. This features various members of Creation Rebel and African Head Charge turning out a wild dub set, with hard-hitting rhythms and FX-mutated melodies phasing in and out of the mix. Recorded quickly with track titles cheekily poking fun at the contemporary series by The Scientist which pitted him against various b-movie foes. The tunes themselves however are deadly serious, with version excursions on some classic On-U vocal cuts such as ‘Bedward The Flying Preacher’ and ‘Across The Red Sea’ and a continuing commitment by producer Adrian Sherwood to take his love of reggae and filter it through his exploratory and uniquely English approach. 'Late Night Endless' is the first album by (Adrian) Sherwood (On-U Sound label boss) and Pinch (Tectonic head honcho) and the culmination of two years in the studio developing, re-dubbing and deconstructing tracks. It finds the highest common factor between the two's techniques, making it impossible to see where one musical personality ends and the other starts. It touches on the urban swing of UK garage on ‘Music Killer (Dub)' and 'Gimme Some More (Tight Like That)', on interstellar 90s ambient dub on 'Wild Birds Sing', on the mystical minimalism of Pinch's first releases on 'Africa 138' - but none of these stylistic diversions are out of place; they all seem completely of a piece with the heavyweight, ancient-futurist dub pulse that runs under everything.

It's an intergenerational meeting of minds, a fusing of two stories, a collision of the (pun intended) tectonic plates of international soundsystem culture. The currents that link post-punk, jungle, dubstep, almighty reggae, techno, Jamaica, Ramsgate and Bristol all come together in a single small DJ booth in London then explode outwards again through truck-sized speakers, through long weeks of studio experimentation, through days and nights without sleep in Tokyo, and are finally condensed on a record that reverberates with the apocalyptic echoes of all that came before and the rumbling threat of a dark future.

The connection was already there. Adrian Sherwood built up a vast catalogue of music through the 1980s as producer to the vast and sprawling dub-industrial-electro collective that was On-U Sound, taking in Dub Syndicate, Tackhead, New Age Steppers and many many more. As a young boy, Rob ‘Pinch’ Ellis grew up on it. “My older brother had loads of On-U albums,” he says, “and taped them all for me. Listening to all that was definitely my introduction to dub – we didn't have a lot of reggae around where I grew up in Newport [South Wales] – and it meant that when I heard jungle, drum'n'bass, trip hop and stuff later on, it made complete sense to me.”

This is an exciting record because it's full of hints of how much more there is to come from this meeting of minds. It's exciting because of the history that pounds and pulses through it. More than that, though, it's exciting because of what it does to you as a listener right here and now in the present; as the sample of Andy Fairley's vocal from the early days of On-U says in 'Precinct of Sound' says: “your head will become a crazy bulbous punch bag of sound”... and what more could you ask?

For more than three decades, Adrian Sherwood has been one of the World’s finest and most consistently groundbreaking producers, artists and remixers. He has wrought his magic upon such artists as Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Blur, Primal Scream and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, as well as coining new sounds with legendary acts such as Tackhead and Mark Stewart. As label boss and producer for the legendary On-U Sound label, he has brought music to the world from New Age Steppers, African Head Charge, Gary Clail and Dub Syndicate.

Now comes Adrian’s third solo album, ‘Survival & Resistance’. Dark atmospherics, creeping electronics and an almost orchestral approach to arrangement are married to brilliant melodic sense.

Drawing on the upheaval of the all-too-recent London riots and staring down the current international economic crisis, the album is an earnest critique of current injustices, and like all great dub music is also potently enjoyable. Echoes of the UK’s hyperactive electronic underground can be heard through the album, and Sherwood’s recent time spent with such young luminaries as Kode 9, Pinch, Digital Mystikz and The Bug have no doubt played an energizing role. However, even stronger is the post-punk lineage of the On-U aesthetic and the mythical mixing approach he has evolved over the years. A swirling maelstrom of skull-shaking, heavy electronic tones and masterful deployment of breathing space and alien echo, ‘Survival & Resistance’ is the sound of avantgarde dub music in 2012.

Simon Somatic is a London based lo-fi producer who has been churning out abrasive, home-made mashups of Industrial, Punk, Thrash and Alternative for going on 10 years. His lyrics stole primarily from Zappa, Morrissey & Mark E Smith, and were delivered via sarcastic talk-singing, or with the rage of a Tom Araya struck down by self-awareness.

His 12th record, Pope On a Rope brings this tinpot M.O. to some kind of a close, stripping away the distortion to reveal the cheap noises beneath, in a self-set challenge to try and leaven these sounds with organic material and render them soulful. Influences this time include Syd Barrett, Squarepusher, & Ivor Cutler.

“Silent Diane are in possession of a much sharper, clearer sound than many immersed in the revolving worlds of chillwave and w*itchhouse which they border. ‘Capella’ could almost be an outtake from a Zola Jesus recording session, if it didn’t have the optimistic flourish of aerial chords to close. Sweet song. ‘Lights On’ is equally melodramatic, but with a
more nuanced arrangement oscillating between twirling swoon and tribal synth-pop rapture. Check!” Boomkat

A killer single from Austin’s Silent Diane. Silent Diane is a project founded by Christine Aprile & Malcolm Elijah in 2009 in an effort to, in their own words, “dedicate themselves to genuine emotion”. Aprile and Elijah are seen around Austin playing with a few other bands, notably Sleep Over, but none of their projects sounds quite as colorfully bombastic, composed ambitious as this one.

Aprile’s voice towers over the a-side “Capella”, it swells over and denies the mountains of washed out reverb one might expect. No one is hiding on either of these tracks, Silent Diane’s scope and arrangement is really direct and strong here, influenced by vintage soundscapes, but still somehow totally contemporary. No doubt, it’s powered by a synthetic pulse and futuristic keys but there is something undeniably human and intimate about this music and we’re proud to get to share it with you!

Again in Silent Diane’s words ”the music becomes a collaborative venture to join the pleasing and the unusual together. It is a product of living with yourself.” YES INDEED
