SLIM PAPI

London lyricist Slim Papi returns for the 3rd and final release in his ‘Châteauneuf-du-Papi’ series with this 4-track EP.

Following collaborations with the likes of Crimeapple, Sonnyjim & Jam Baxter, this time London’s Slim Papi teams up with the Madlib-cosigned Chris Crack, who makes a rare appearance singing his way through the Max-B reminiscent hook as well as handling a 16 bar verse. Crack appearing fresh off the back of his latest ‘Free Sex’ LP and fellow wine-afficinado Griselda/Alchemist affiliate, Willie The Kid.

Continuing the trend set through his ‘Chateauneuf-du-Papi' EP series, the EP once again sees artwork courtesy of Dublin’s Johnny Brennan and includes tracks named after cult a movie directors, iconic restaurants and highly coveted bottles of plonk. The Jon Phonics produced lead single ‘Wim Wenders’ also features Luke Mills-Pettigrew of psychedelic-jazz experimentalists, Lunch Money Life, on bass guitar. Making the 4 track opus a truly all star cast.

Continuing the self proclaimed ’travel rappers’ world hopping theme (his last ‘I’ve Long & Prosper’ project written & recorded during a stint in Brazil) the EP was written during a short stint working the harvest at a friends vineyard in Portugal’s Douro valley, working 16 hour shifts, breaking only to cook twice a day. A vibe summarised in Papi’s effortless lyrics - “Precipitation, maceration, elevation, information highway generation, microphone mathematics, fry the amoratics” - and a work ethic translated to the music we hear. With his trademark themes of vintage vehicles, water sports and the finer things in life, the guest verses from Willie The Kid & Chris Crack match this energy with a little more bravado to spare.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: 3rd instalment from one of my favourite UK wordsmiths at the moment. Deliberately under-the-radar and apart from the Rap Soap Opera (man's got wine to make!), he's a breath of fresh air amongst all the fake gangsters and aggro rappers.

TRACK LISTING

A1. Wim Wenders Ft. Chris Crack
A2. Barolo Serralunga
AA1: River Cafe Ft. Willie The Kid
AA2: Mysteria

Nomadic, London-born MC Slim Papi follow up to his ‘Châteauneuf-du-Papi Vol. 1’ EP - which saw support from Clash, COLORSXSTUDIOS, BBC6 Music, Iggy Pop, Huey Morgan, Jyoty (Rinse FM), Shy One (NTS Radio) BBC Introducing, Amazon ++ - with Vol. 2 in his ‘Châteauneuf-du-Papi’ EP series.

This time he once again brings along Westside Gunn/Madlib collaborator Sonnyjim along for the ride, as well as his New Jersey rap twin Crimeapple (fresh off the back of appearance on Rosnerberg's 'Real Late' comp alongside Ghostface Killah & Jim Jones) and Lunch Money Life/Touching Bass’ Poison Zcora, for a 4-track travel-rap opus.

Slim Papi (Noonian Soong) levels up his bars celebrating lifes wins and luxuries. Rolls out some of his most high grade references of cuisine ("Steamed bream with creamed beans in a limousine, I'm eating langoustines and tangerine's in Aberdeen"), travel ("I back flip off a catamaran in Kazakhstan, the man with the plan is stuck in Milan in a traffic jam) and cultural touchstones ("iridocycltis”) over largely self produced cuts. The result is a confident, mature and unique offering for rap music from British shores, bridging the worlds of funk, electornica and rap and packaged as some of the best London music has to offer.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Second, BUY ON SIGHT 7" from my favourite up-and-coming UK wordsmith Slim Papi. Seriously, big T I P on this - still proper unknown. These 7"s are gonna be well collectable when he breaks big. Really strong video game and personality to boot; this anti-gansta who prefers the finer things in life to slinging mediocre street drugs and knife fights is destined to become a household name.

TRACK LISTING

A1: David Lynch Ft. Crimeapple
A2: Rod Serling (produced By Poison Zcora)
AA1: Harry Dean Stanton (produced By Sonnyjim)
AA2: Steve Buscemi

London's Slim Papi follows up his critically acclaimed 'Excellent Adventure' EP with the first drop from his forthcoming 'Châteauneuf-du-Papi' project. Described as 'somewhere between Anthony Bourdain and Action Bronson...’

The 4-track project sees the orator trade lyrics, recipes and wine recommendations alongside Westside Gunn collaborator Sonnyjim and Blah! Records stand out Jam Baxter over production from Goya Gumbani collaborator, Kiina & Tru Thoughts producer Forest DLG.

Ridiculously limited copies – think there’s about 40 for Europe, 100 in total! Move quick!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Seriously, seriously good. With all the flamboyant swagger of Action Bronson, the wordsmithery of Your Old Droog and the playful experimentation of Ratking. Remember Jesse From SE – similar London centric flow on this cat. You might not know Slim Papi yet, but it's certainly this UK-based rapper's time.

TRACK LISTING

A1. Emidio Pepe Ft. Sonnyjim
A2. Le Corbusier Ft. Kiina
AA: Cosmo Kramer Ft. Jam Baxter
